Throw them bones!

As they walked, she took in the scenery, trying to distract herself from the hours of walking they were doing. Fyfe was silent until he spoke again, upon which she instinctively moved closer to him, noticing the way the landscape changed. As he commented on the weather near the town, she looked to him and asked, "What does it mean, do you know?

"The air here smells stagnant. Those clouds have been there for a long time... Something doesn't like sunlight very much." said Davin, examining his surroundings. "The grass is also dry and dead and weeds have grown everywhere. It probably hasnt rained here in years. In short, it could be either vampires or water devils... And I really do not like either of those." he said, showing Fyfe a few artist sketches of vampires and water devils from his Book of journeys. "There's only one way to find out which is which..." he said, pressing onward.

Fyfe's eyebrows pressed together with worry as Davin explained the situation to her, her muscles tensing a little as he said that it might be because of vampires or water devils. She had heard stories of the latter, and fought personally with the former. However, she nodded when he said that the only way to find out was to keep going. Keeping her step with his, she made sure she stayed close to him.

When they reached the edge of the town, it was in ruins. Houses lay crumbling and desolate before them like the bones of long dead wooden animals. There was no sign of any permanent residence. Then, something caught his eye. It was a corpse. It was also terrifyingly familiar... It was the bandit he had scared off. The body had no signs of claw marks or large bites. That ruled out water devils. He leant down to examine the body further. Two shrivelled pinpoints lay in the side of his neck. He pulled down the collar. It revealed a whole other set of pinpoint bites. "Gods... His body has been drained and not just by one vampire... We are dealing with a whole nest of them..." he said getting to his feet. He went pale. "Now, you've fought these things before, right?" he asked. "So what do we do?"

"It...it was only one of them," Fyfe explained, looking down at the corpse, "not...not many of them...I just used my swords...after a while he just fell over and died..." She trailed off, worried creases crossing her face. When she had fought the vampire, it had been luck that had gotten her through, and even still she had nearly died multiple times. The paleness of his skin scared her, more so than the thought of fighting a vampire again. If he was that scared, she felt she had plenty reason to be as well.

Davin flicked through the pages in his Book of Journeys to see if he could find anything that might work. Steak through the heart? No. Silver? Not even close. Light? Only from the sun, and something had already made sure that was covered. Allergy to garlic? Not in your wildest dreams. Then he found something. Nightshade leaves. It wouldn't kill them, but it would slow them down. "I've got something. Not to kill, just to make them a bit drowsy..." he said worriedly. "Nightshade. And it's growing everywhere around here... It might just give us the edge we need if we rub the leaves on a sword or knife." he said as he read from the Book.

He continued to read. It was true that they coudn't cross running water, so all he had to do was destroy the little stone bridge that lead into the centre of town and their escape, if the need arose, would be assured. He read a little further. 'But this has yet to be proven...' Wonderful. Looks like they would have to slow them down with the nightshade and just keep whacking... "No point in stalling... Let's go..." he said, swallowing hard.

Fyfe looked over his shoulder as he read, wanting to know what he learned when he learned it so that she wouldn't have to ask. When he commented that they might be able to win a fight against vampires if they rubbed nightshade leaves on weapons, she nodded, her eyes filling with certainty as he said that they should leave. However, she couldn't help but say, "D-Davin...I'm scared..." a bit of her young mental age coming to the surface. Her time with the god hadn't let her develop mentally, and a part of her was still the girl she was when she went over the falls. Even now, she would turn tail at the sight of a spider, and hated the idea of being up in a high place.

Swallowing her fear, but still having a fearful look upon her face, she said, "L-let's go..."

"If you weren't scared right now I would think you were insane... Let's get this done." he said swallowing hard. They ventured on through the town, passing the skeletons of burnt out and dessicated buildings. Several corpses dotted the villiage, all far older and far more decomposed than the bandit which now lay dead and drained. One particular corpse rocked Davin to his core. It was a small child, no older than seven years of age, his insides on the outside, flies gathering about his fallen form. Davin made the sign of blessing as he passed it. They continued deeper into the town and found that one particular building was still standing. "This must be it..." said Davin. "Do we want to go down there or fight them up here in the open should they attack?" he asked Fyfe. She was after all much more skilled at swordplay than Davin. He might just get in the way down there in the narrow confides of a basement.

Fyfe followed Davin closely, her heart pounding in her chest, as she attempted to not step on any corpses. She nearly stopped when she saw the child, but when she saw Davin still walking, she pushed on as well. As they reached the last remaining building, and he asked her if she wanted to fight them out in the open or inside the building, she said, "I...I want to get this over with..." If she would be forced to wait, she didn't know how much resolve she would have.

"Be brave." he said, taking a few leaves from a nearby nightshade plant and handing them to Fyfe. "There is no cowardice in retreat, only wisdom. We have to cleanse this town of this night-filth and lay the dead here to rest... What these vampires have done here is disgusting and they deserve to be judged in death for their crimes!" he said, he voice full rage and hate. "That boy... That boy will haunt my thoughts for the rest of my life if nothing is done here today." He looked to Fyfe. "We are avenging him and his kin..." he said, having calmed down a bit. He drew his sword and made a cut across his hand. He squeezed his fist tightly as his blood colored the dead earth beside him. "Get ready..." he said sheathing his sword. The sound of growls and hustling feet began from within the bowls of the delapidated building before them and was rushing faster and faster toward them. He stretched his hand out before him. "Forbidden Sigil... Strength..." he said as the door burst open.

Fyfe listened to Davin's words, her face tight with worry, as he spoke, his voice quickly becoming angry. Taking the offered leaves, she unsheathed her swords one at a time and rubbed the leaves along the blades of each, letting the liquid in the leaves run down its length. Wincing as he cut the cross into his palm, she was able to hear the sounds of the creatures that dwelled within the building. Holding her swords at the ready, she felt herself tensing with fear, even though she was constantly reassuring herself that they would survive.

As Davin's muscular structure began to shift, several robed figures charged out from the hollows of the building and rushed the pair. Davin took the first one as his transformation became complete. It leapt at him, fangs and claws bared. Davin caught it by the throat and flung it like a sick rag doll into the ground. Another on jumped at him, it's fangs burrowing into the skin of his shoulder. He bushed a massive fist down his arm, breaking the teeth off and sending the vampire sprawling and gurgling in agony as it clutched it's face. He turned his attention back to his previous attacker which was feverishly clawing at his arm. He brought a fist down into it's chest, crushing a large portion of it's rib structure. "Kill Them All!" he shouted to Fyfe as more came at him, hungering for his blood.

Fyfe was also quite caught up in battle, using her twin blades like scythes, spinning along the tips of her feet around in a circular motion, occasionally leaping forwards to attack a vampire who had gotten too close. When she had the moments to spare, she would look to Davin, checking to see that he was okay, and praying to the gods that his magic didn't run out in the middle of the fighting. Screaming as she felt one of the vampires biting her, she swung her elbow back, catching it between the eyes and forcing it off of her. She only had a second to feel the wound, it wasn't too bad, she figured, jumping back into the fight. Hearing Davin's shout, she only increased in her fighting, sweeping the legs out from beneath one and turning to another.

Davin roared as he felt another pair of fangs clamp sharply into the back of his neck. He grabbed and swiped at the pain, grabbing hold of a handful of hair that was not his own and flinging it forward over his head the vampire shrieked as it hit the ground and was silenced as Davin slammed a heel down into it's throat. He began to feel weak. He couldn't hold the magic for much longer. He had to push on. Another cloaked form came sprinting at him, landing an elbow in his chest. Davin reeled and made his counterattack. He grabbed the hilt of his sword and swung it. The blade bit through the vampire's flesh and bone, cleft the arm from the body and ceased it's deadly path burrowed in the ribs of the vampire that continued to claw and howl. Claws scraped Davin's face, letting small trickled of blood run down his face. He gripped the hilt with both hands and forced it through the torso of his assailant. As the vampire fell in half, choking and gasping, Davin cried out and his form returned to normal. He panted hard as another rushed him taking advantage of his weakness. It knocked him to the ground. As it leapt upon him, he thrust his sword deep into it's belly. It seemed to ignore the grevious wound and clawed and bit at the air in utter desperation to claim Davin's blood.

Fyfe kept pressing on, but it seemed like they were infinite numbers of vampires coming from the building. That, or those she landed a cut on only went down for a few seconds before attacking her again. Seeing Davin fighting the vampires, she wanted to go to his side and try to protect him, but was pulled into a fight just as she was about to go to him. She could feel herself tiring now, her movements and reactions becoming slower, even as she tried to keep up with the fight. It wasn't that noticeable at the moment, but soon it would get to be where she wouldn't be able to protect herself. Her want to be next to Davin increased when he returned to his normal size, fear coursing through her for a second. That distraction almost cost her her life, but she noticed a vampire coming from her side just in time to dance backwards.

Seeing him knocked to the ground, she quickly cut a way through to him, terrified that she would lose him. Finding the vampire on top of him, she used the flat end of her sword to knock the vampire off of him. Momentarily forgetting about the vampires around her, she takes his wrist and pulls him to his feet, tears in her eyes. "Are you okay?" she asks, her voice only barely loud enough to be heard above the sounds of the vampires.

Davin was pulled to his feet. His nose and ears were bleeding from the pressure the transformation had on his body. "Keep them off me for just a few seconds!" he said slashing at one that he had previously beaten the teeth out of it's mouth. He took a few steps back, thowing his sword to the gg he blade sticking into the earth. He placed his hands together and then drew them apart quickly. "Forbidden Sigil! Gale force!" he said as a tiny spherical gale seemed to rage between his hands. With a shout he aimed it upward and it shot off toward the sky with a deafening crack.

With a shout of, "I'll try!" Fyfe whirled around, her blades catching a vampire across the chest. So close to Davin, she couldn't go all out, but she knew, at least hoped, that he had something up his sleeve. Thankfully, he did, his shout reaching her ears, even above the noise of the fight. "What did that do?" she shouted over at him, seeing how he had aimed it to the sky. She was terrified that it would hinder them, or that it wouldn't work, but she was even more afraid of dying, which kept her fighting.

"Just wait and see!" he said, his ears ringing. Another vampire came charging at him, it's claws and hatred bared. "Push!" shouted Davin, thrusting his hand toward it's chest. The air rippled along the length of his arm and struck the vampire in the chest, sending it hurtleing into the structure before them. It slammed into the edge of a window and a few bricks gave way as it's spine did the same. All of a sudden a dull thud was heard. The gale ball had reached it's peak and burst. A small gust of wind buffeted both sides of the conflict and a hole was torn in the layer of clouds above them. The vampires ceased and just stared upwards as the light of the sun bathed them in flame, turning them into withered husks and ash. Davin sighed. "Good work..." he said with a chuckle. He began to teeter and fell face down into the blood-soaked dirt, unconscious.

The effect the sun had on the vampires was both beautiful and terrifying. Beautiful in the contrast the bright reds and oranges against the deadness of the landscape, terrifying in that it had been Davin who had caused it. Relieved that the fight had been cut short, didn't have much time to celebrate, as Davin collapsed. Kneeling by his side, she tried to see if he was breathing. Letting out a sigh of relief as she found that he was, she tried to pull him out of the dirt and the blood. When she was about ten yards from the scene, she quickly got out her bedroll, spreading it out and rolling him onto it. It had taken longer than it should have, as some of the wounds on her body caused her to stop in pain. "Please be okay," she whispered, beginning to take off his robes so that she could see the extent of his injuries. Ignoring the initial embarrassment in undressing him, she tore strips of her clothes to make bandages, trying to stop his bleeding as quickly as possible.
