[ Sorry that this is so long, it has excerpts from the story that I was writing previously xD Genevieve is my main character, Lacy is a side character who I may use now and then. I will probably add some characters here and there, a male most likely since I don't have any at the moment. I won't use all of them at the same time, obviously, since I don't want to clutter things up. You can bring in as many characters as you wish :3 ]

The putrid stench of rotting flesh billowed out of the half decomposed corpse just a few feet ahead of Genevieve. She held her breath, resisting the urge to gag. Years later and the smell was familiar, but just as repulsive as it had been the first time around. In the July heat, it was even worse - amplified. And it was everywhere. There wasn't one place on the blue and green planet where the odor of the ghouls hasn't reached and stained, leaving those who were still alive a constant reminder that they would soon have their souls stolen too.

No one could escape the ghouls. Everyone fell one day, but until then, there was nothing to do but keep fighting. She had to hold out just a little longer. And when it finally comes to be her turn, she'd make sure she left long before she was turned. There was no way she would let her body become a puppet of the virus, to end up used and broken like the others have.

Genevieve wouldn't because she knew she was smarter. Because others believed – they hoped – that even after they're bitten, they'd have a chance. The truth was, there was no chance and hope was a waste. After the virus entered your blood system, you were already dead. It was stupid to imagine that some miracle will come along. You're no one special; life won't go out of its way to save you. All you'll manage to do is cause trouble for someone else because later you're the one praying on their child, their mother, father, brother, sister - anyone you can get your filthy, decaying hands on.

And because later, you'll stumble upon your former companions, those who once knew you as a friend, someone to trust, and they'll be forced to look you in the eye – assuming you have eyes – and tear you apart, while you brainlessly and helplessly claw and bite, moaning for a taste of their flesh.

Staring ahead, she could see the indent in the field of tall grass where the body laid. She hit him. Of course she did, she always did. But there was no way to be sure she hit him in the head, she had to be cautious either way. If she happened to miss his head, he could still be move and snap at her if she got too close. One bite and you were gone, even if it wasn't deep, even if he only tore a bit of your skin off, infection was still possible.

Genevieve headed in the direction of the body, swatting away flies that now heavily infested the area. Even they seemed disappointed when they reached the corpse. But what could someone expect? He was rotted down to the bone, which could be seen sticking out of the blue-ish skin in some spots, jagged and yellow, reminding her of old tree branches.

"Be careful." Someone whispered behind her, voice almost carried away by the faint puffs of wind. The girl had always had such a soft voice. Genevieve had almost forgotten that she had been behind her the entire time. It was no surprise though. Stealth was what she was known for.

"I know." Genevieve replied. Her own voice came out clear, nowhere near as delicate and wispy as hers. Cautiously, she made her way through the tall, golden grass. Above her, the sun shined down with the same intensity as it had before this entire mess started, before Earth had become infested with the virus. The sun doesn't care, She thought as she hovered over the still body. Why would something as great as the sun have any concern for their measly planet?

Keeping a good distance between the monster's corpse and her own body, she noticed that her machete had hit him in the neck and was poking through the other side, the blade keeping his head slightly elevated off of the ground. She knew enough to realize that it has severed the connection between his brain and body. Even if he were still 'alive', he would be paralyzed almost completely. This thought relaxed her as she reached for her weapon, holding her foot against his back so that she could pull it out. She ignored the sound it made as it slid out of the skin. The dark and smooth blade was covered in a dark, gooey blood - stale blood - and tiny pieces of old bone fragments. She bit her tongue in disgust and attempted to wipe some of it off on the grass around her.

"What are we going to do with him?"

She jumped at the sound, heart lodging itself in her throat and thumping loudly. However, she floated down to Earth just as quickly as she had gone up when she recognized the voice. For a moment, she was annoyed by the simple fact that she was the only one able to sneak up on her this way. "Lacy," She said, clearing her throat and looking over at the small girl. She was thin and not very tall, with hazel eyes and dark, curly hair that stopped just short of the mid-point of her neck. "Do you have matches on you?" She asked.

Lacy stared at her for a moment, pondering whether to tell her the truth or not. She wondered if it was safe to light a fire in a field of dry grass. Genevieve held her hand out, palm up, as a way of saying that she knew she had them and wouldn't take no for an answer. She sighed, dug into the back of her pocket, and released the small box into my hand.

She slid on of the matches from the box and swished it across the side of the box, not having to look down to know it caught fire. Holding her machete at her side, she flicked the match forward and watched as it landed on the backside of the ghoul. Slowly, the tiny flame became bigger, greater, as it breathed in the July air and spread over the body, engulfing it in shades of red and orange. The smoke filled the air, swirling up toward the azure sky in big ribbons of grey. She wondered how it would feel to be able to float away too, up toward the sun and away from this place, away from the greedy hands that never stopped grabbing and healthy ones that never stopped fidgeting.

Suddenly though, a noise startled her and she glanced back at Lacy, wondering if it had been her. However, the girl seemed shocked herself. Quickly, Genevieve reached for her dirty weapon and moved forward, standing next to the burning body. The sound was footsteps, whether they were human or not it was hard to tell in the midst of the field. She stayed quiet, awaiting for them to show themselves.
