the Wilborough Helpers Association [Potterverse RP interest check]

So I've been re-reading The Goblet of Fire; it got me thinking about opening up a Potterverse RP, most likely set during the main plot whilst having minimal focus on the Boy Who Lived and his associates. At the moment I have a very vague idea and I'm all for setting it out with a group of interested players whilst hurling my own content and input at you all.

So the idea is that the world of Harry Potter is, undoubtedly, a dangerous place to live in. Not only have you got dangerous creatures, but you've also got dangerous spells, dangerous people, and the threat of discovery looms over us all. And let's be honest; not every witch and wizard out there would know how to deal with...a doxy infestation, or perhaps a nasty boggart in their cupboard. Maybe things get more serious with a banshee in the graveyard or a giant getting dangerously close to a ski resort.

With the hunt for Sirius Black, then the Quidditch world cup, and the infiltration of the Death Eaters, the public find themselves unable to turn to the Ministry of Magic for aid like they used to. Small towns and hamlets with magical issuess are unable to receive the help they require and the demand for assistance with magical problems ceaselessly grows, giving rise to various private companies. This is where we come in.

The Wilborough Helpers Association originally started after Dorothy Wilborough retired from being a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in Hogwarts. She's an immensely sweet, run-of-the-mill elderly woman with a love for knitting, gardening, baking and kicking ass. She created a small group of people, either those she knew directly or people she had hired, who address the concerns of the common folk and try to mitigate some of the stress from the Ministry so their attention is focused on quelling the uprising of the Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort. The RP will follow The Helpers as they work their way through increasingly difficult tasks, and just like any other wizard, Lord Voldemort's influence will eventually affect their clients and their goals.

---

So whilst the RP is set more-or-less around the time of the Order of the Phoenix when things started going grim and the Ministry tried to quell the fearmongering, the actual progression and universe itself is open to some...stretching, I'll call it stretching. The main characters exist and are doing their thing, but I might add in new creatures, maybe change Centaurs/Merpeople to be more hostile and fall under beast category, add in a couple of new spells and possibly compress the timeline a bit so everything moves along smoothly from 'ok' to 'big trouble'. Any and all changes will have to be run through with me beforehand just so we keep that happy balance of lore-abiding and our own stage to play on.

I'm hoping for a light-hearted, jaunty adventure with some colourful and interesting characters facing a myriad of missions ranging from 'silly' to 'grimdark'. Things will get serious, as they tend to do when an evil all-powerful wizard takes over the country and oppresses the muggle population, but I'm going to try and avoid plunging the RP into an all-out edgefest.

Activity requirements will be high and I'm not afraid of pestering people, so be warned.

47 Lilystone Road (The Hub)
Originally Dorothy's private home, now repurposed to house members of the Wilborough Helpers Association. Every member is given their own room upon joining, usually an average size but the typical wizard inventory tends to take up enough space to make it amicably cozy. Members are expected to tidy their rooms every week (with inspections on Sundays) and generally help out with the chores and the housework in return for free bed and board.

The house is a fairly large cottage with an even larger garden, which is also looked after by the Helpers. There is a small kitchen, a communal dining room and three bathrooms - one hidden away in Dorothy's en-suite room, then one for women and another for men - purely to keep hygiene products and potions separate. The main part of the house is its comfy living room, where most members of the association hang out, drinking tea and looking over possible requests for help. A garden shed doubles up as an owl shelter for any owl mail that comes in or out of the house.

The house acts as a hub. All members apparate in and out in front of the garden gate, as rather heavy enchantments on the cottage itself prevent apparating and shield it from dark magic, intruders and curious muggles. Despite it's unassuming appearance, 47 Lilystone Road is a safehouse of incredible proportions and can only truly be found under certain conditions. A sense of mystery hangs over the house and its precise location - one must travel to Cornwall in order to seek it out, but an invitation is always required to find it. Once Lilystone Road is located, the invitation will reveal a small cobbled path to number 47. As an unspoken rule guests usually enter through the front and regulars leave through the back - if someone was to leave the Wilborough Helpers Association permanently, it is traditional for them to leave through the front door.

Positions and Requirements (IC)
There's lots to do in the Wilborough Helpers Association - provided you can make up a suitable excuse for your character being a member. A well-rounded cast is essential for these missions however, so if you see a gap in the defences that needs filling, please consider changing your concept to fit it! Here is a vague list of roles that should be filled.

- Healer (It's bound to happen, we need someone to help out.)
- Curse-breaker (Ancient artifacts, relics, cursed objects that need un-cursing.)
- Fighter (When the going gets tough, the tough get going.)
- Magical Creatures Expert (Please don't let us get eaten alive!)
- Potion Brewer (Help in a bottle.)

No role is definite but you must only specialise in one aspect. You can be capable of other things but don't steal the limelight - if our healer is trying to fix a spliced arm, don't leap in and offer a cure-all unless they ask for help. I want everyone to have their time to shine!

In order to join the Wilborough Helpers Association you have to have passed all of your OWLs and NEWTs and have a clean criminal record. Applications are sent in via Owl and reviewed with care and precision. If accepted, an invitation would be sent back - if declined a letter of apology is sent instead. Newcomers join during late spring. You can play as either a Newcomer or a Regular, but I have a requirement of At least 3 Regulars before we start the RP.

Positions and Requirements (OOC)
I focus on character quality and equality of skill level in my RPs. I judge your RP skills through your character sheet only, so all of the areas would have to be filled completely. I don't mind keeping things secret but they MUST be sent to me via PM.

I'm aiming for a small cast but high activity, so a few posts per week would be the general idea. If you're not willing to keep up, I would prefer for you to politely notify me so I can work with you to find a happy medium instead of slipping into silence. Be brave, I don't bite often!. Character development is always on the top spot for priorities so any situations or events you would like to see should always be sent to me via PM so I can work it into the plot.

A personal request to take into account when making your character is ensuring they are compatible with other people. They have to be able to work well in a group at the very least, since Dorothy can and will deliver a smackdown if someone misbehaves in her goddamn house. Bickering and in-fighting, whilst deliciously profitable for character development, cannot logically be allowed to continue until it gets out of proportion because the group has to be fully functional on their more dangerous missions.

I'm looking at around 5 players at the moment, and only 1 character per player so all of your efforts are focused on developing and interacting with each other instead of amongst your own group of characters.

Missions
Missions can be short or long depending on the complexity of the task at hand. We start with small one-time tasks and build our way up into longer missions that involve camping, travelling and exploration. Suggestions for missions can always be thrown into the OOC or into a PM, but I'll always have the final say on what goes and what doesn't. As the plot progresses, the Wilborough Helpers Association will start to feel the sting of the Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort. You'll see the missions increase in severity and eventually the whole concept of 'mission' will be turned on its head as a new goal is set for the Association. But we'll find that out as we go along!

I will also pepper some off-time between missions, and there will be some time-skipping as several years and the encroaching dark forces will start to take their toll without us having to RP every single moment of the character's lives. The RP will be split into chapters, and each new chapter will be announced as the current one nears an end. Almost every chapter will involve a timeskip. The first chapter is called Turning Over a New Leaf.

Character Sheet Template

Thank you very much for expressing interest in Wilborough Helpers Association. Before we can let you know if you have been accepted, we would very much like a letter of application. Be as honest as possible dearie, the Helpers are a close-knit family and what you put down in your letter will not be made public without your permission.
Kind Regards,
Dorothy Wilborough
Name: (Full name.)

Gender: (Dorothy does not discriminate, she simply needs to know to give your character a room closest to the correct gender-assigned bathroom.)

Age: (Real age, in years.)

Specialty: (Put in what you're best at, please!)

Appearance: (A small description is required, but attach a photographic image or a gif if you want!)

Personality: (Remember: Dorothy's reading this and she's judging you if you lie.)

Biography: (Again, if you lie there's going to be one very angry old woman after you when you arrive. She does background checks! She will find out!)

Skills: (Up to 5 skills. NOTE: NOT EVERYTHING IS COMBAT ORIENTATED. NOT EVERYTHING IS COMBAT ORIENTATED. We still need cooks and cleaners and people who are nice to animals, or maybe you're great at sewing, perhaps you play the piano, literally anything. I can and will find a way to create missions based on your skills!)

Weaknesses: (At least 5 weaknesses. They don't have to balance out your skills, but it'd be nice if they did.)

Equipment: (What would your character always carry in their bag of choice?)

Other: (Put literally anything else in here that you feel Dorothy would need to be warned about or have to know for when you arrive. Allergies or medical conditions? Maybe your character has dietary requirements, or perhaps they're a light sleeper or have a weak bladder? Or maybe you just want to be a sweetie and tell Dorothy how much you want to join? Go wild!)

Your character sheet should be written like a letter of application. Put it in your character's voice, feel free to be informal in it, and remember Dorothy will have these letters in the actual RP and she can refer to them whenever she wants!

Whew, okay, that's all I've got for now. I'm going to leave that to sit and brew whilst you all fire questions or add in your own content.

This really looks like an interesting concept, and I'd be happy to join, hadn't it been for two small details: I know practically nothing of the HP series, in that I've read the first book and seen the first two movies. I also will be gone all summer, so I won't be able to do anything until after that, and even then my online time is somewhat unreliable. Thanks for the offer, however.

So, I take it you two are on board? Nice to have you both!

EDIT: I know how difficult it is to limit on RPs, so it's all good blue. I'm still going to be active in Lost Hope because - let's be honest - Hildred's a bloody fun character to RP as. Foo's busy at the moment and soon we'll be working on our collab but since I suddenly had an influx of free time, I thought I might try my hand at GMing. Do tell me about your dream job though, it sounds very exciting!

On topic - after I get my lunch I'll put in EVEN MORE information. Fun times ahead!

@Mippu and I have been looking for an HP roleplay since forever. We've got HP OC that we haven't managed to place somewhere, so you are a dream come true Ythania. Thank you for sharing this with us!

If you tell me about them, I'll bend the RP to suit the characters. Just a heads-up though; I'm not having any characters who are...I don't know, cousins of Bellatrix or the long lost son of Hagrid - they have to be pure OC, no blood ties with anyone canon! The best I'm doing at the moment is Dorothy knowing the Hogwarts staff from her year in the school and even then it'd be a passing mention in the RP. This story will very much focus on the universe without interfering with the canon.

Oh don't worry, our OC's are TOTS no relation. The most I did was a spin off of my OC with Draco, but that's not really necessary.

Where to begin this discussion of OC, I need @Mippu . We actually made three OC, three set of friends, but let me tell you about mine. In our HP world, Magical Prussia still exists and did annex itself after the WW since they had no part of it though they were ostracised about supporting Grindenwald. My character comes from one of the pureblood lines but is a bastard AND a half breed. She's half veela since her father is a rare male veela. Due to her mother being pregnant out of wedlock, she took the chance to become an ambassador of Prussia to Britain and moved there. Eventually marrying a long time paramour and had a son.

That's basically the gist of my character, we actually made her part of Harry's batch, sometimes older (like the Weasley Twins batch) but if we're working at the ministry. I think we can easily age them up. If we can get something concrete down, we can chara build together. :D

It looks good so far - when the OOC is up I'll nitpick your characters until we settle on a properly fitted version. I need to nip out for a bit, whilst I'm gone could any of you help think of a name for this motley band of wannabe gilderoy Lockharts? At the moment it's just "the helpers" but I'm looking for a name that fits the cute rural old lady vibe. Perhaps something humourously embarrassing which sharply contrasts with the efficiency and danger of their job.

It'll be even harder if I get my 'dream job' this fall.
Hey good luck, Blue! ^_^

No worries, our OC had nearly nothing to do with the cannon cast. Mine came from Mahou Gakuen for instance. Is that still acceptable?

Hey, "The Helpers" sure fits the old lady vibe to me.
The Clean-Uppers?

LOL, clean uppers.

League of Amicable Independent Desperate Citizens aka L.A.I.D. Citizens? I dunno. hahaha

Eh, the clean-uppers sounds like a magical maid service. And the other one is too long to say - I think I might call them the Willborough Helpers.

You're always allowed in Jess, don't you worry.

Lordy lordy, I've added a LOT of new info into that interest check. Read away and ask questions, I'd love to develop this even further with your help!

I'd be interested. My only concern had been if I could keep up with activity, but I think I can do a few posts per week

The best way to go about it is to join, see if you can keep up, and if you can't then I'll be willing to work with you to find a middle ground. Maybe make a character who has an easy excuse to leave or stay out of the group so if things become a little too hectic you can say "I need a break!" and have your character disappear for a bit. I'm not wanting a post every single day - that would be way too much.
