The War for Wonderland

"No doubt, but it might be even more of an advantage," he observed. For a second, he thought about the dream he had last night, something from the start of the war that had broken his heart. His face changed to a look of sorrow and sadness before he banished it away and chnged the subject. "The Hatter is in the next town over. It might be a two day walk."

The Hatter wasn't someone Alice thought would be an asset in the war but the Ace seemed to believe so and since he would probably be the one to lead their eventual attack on the Queen of Hearts and her army, Alice was more than willing to let him lead the way. Taking a slice of bread, she took a tentative bite. She didn't seem to grow any bigger so she smiled before continuing to eat the slice.

She had seen the look of sadness but it was gone quick and given their tentative relationship, Alice knew better to ask. She finished up her breakfast before standing up, strapping her weapons onto herself once more. "Well, if it's a two day walk then we really need to start moving."

Michael stood, and packed the rest of the bread away. He still ate his apple as he led her out of the town, into a gently rolling green grassland that seemed to stretch for miles. He walked at a steady but fast pace. 'In other times, this would all be farmed, and we would be walking through fields of wheat," he said sadly as they walked across patchy grass, weeds, and dirt.

Back in her own reality, her father had owned part of a barley and wheat property. Alice had cherished the rare times when he had taken her with him, racing his young daughter through the golden fields, laughing at their dirty, bare feet. She smiled nostalgically.

"When the war is over, it'll be a golden world once more." Alice told him encouragingly.
