Interested in the World of Darkness/modern paranormal stories? Then welcome!

The central concept of this world is the eponymous Veil, a barrier that keeps the eyes of mortals from seeing the truth that they share the world with the supernatural; Fae, Angels, Demons, Mages and others, all hidden away next to and inside normal human society.

The general theme of play will be "street level", characters being small fish in the big pond of magical New York City, fighting to maintain what they have.

RP Expectations:
While these rules are not hard and fast (because we understand real life is more important than RP) we are seeking players who can post 2 times a week at a length of 2 or 3 paragraphs. Conversations sometimes can be shorter and if you want to collaborate and post a conversation that is more than welcome.

This will be a dark, at times scary setting (think World of Darkness for a similar tone), but it will not be a 18+ RP, anything along those lines needs to be taken to private messages. Additionally, as we are going for a more close to ground tone, please keep character pictures of human forms fairly realistic.

If you're unable to post, but are still interested in the RP please let us (Sarnai or Esper) know so we can keep the RP moving.

How does magic work exactly in its effects and usage? Is it similar to Awakened magic in World of Darkness?
 
Mage: The Ascension was absolutely a major influence on how we thought about magic in the setting, combined with a bit of Changeling with it's Arts and Bunks if you have looked into that.

As outlined, all magic is based in the triangle of Power (magical energy), Belief (your subconscious belief that the magic will work), and Will (conscious, focused belief that the magic will work), where you need a minimum amount of all three, but can substitute some of one with another. A place of immense magical potential can let you do a lot even if you don't believe and can't focus, an expansive worldview can cover up other problems, or an intense, powerful focus and willpower can let you push through.

The output of those three things comes in two flavors:
- What could be termed "free-form magic", which is primarily what Human Mages and Celestials use, which is when you just channel raw magical energy into a concept or idea and then let it loose. It is dangerous and unpredictable, and requires intense focus, but also extremely powerful due to being extremely flexible.

- Then what you could call "ritualized magic", which is what the Fey and some Shifters/Vampires use; pre-determined, practiced spells with known required rituals/actions and effects. This means it is unlikely to blow up in your face unless you do something very very wrong, but you also give up a lot of potential flexibility in doing so, and may require instruments or ingredients to use.

As my Co-GM said. That isn't to say either side cannot do the both kinds. It is a general rule for the races what their inherent ability is, but nothing is stopping one race from learning from another's magic or style (Wild or Ritual respectively).

It could in fact be one of their strengths to understand restrained and wild magic! Don't be afraid to ask us questions, either in a PM or here.

Hi! I'm very interested in joining up in this, the concept sounds awesome! :bsmile:

I saw that in your other post that making our own races of monsters are allowed, so do you mind if i share an idea for my character's species with you before any other questions ?
 
If there is a monster/creature from like the mythos of a culture that would be allowed. An example would be Yokai or specific demons from others cultures. Big cities are often melting pots of cultures, so a paranormal creature from elsewhere could well blend in to such a place.

That would not mean the making of new races. It would more be a creative interpretation of one that exists if not on the nose. Apologies if the phrasing caused confusion.

I just googled WoD and see that it is based on a game that has like classic western monster movie concepts right?

Just wondering if this concept is acceptable? So my charrie concept for shifter is that my girl got cursed/bitten by a spider-like demon master from a plane of hell/underworld and gained supernatural powers. Now in exchange for the power she will ultimately become a mother demon spider and lay eggs in people so the demon master can be worshipped again as a goddess. The demon master is actually: Neith the Egyptian Spider goddess of Destiny and Warfare. The goddess has been transfomred and trapped in the underworld ever since her following of mortals no longer have faith in her and she was since defeated centuries ago.

Like this is all backstory and flavour so like Neith will be a backdrop and not impact the RP. My girlie won't ever reach her final monster/queen spider demon form.
 
So there's two ways to look at it given the world.

They'd likely be a Mage, not a shifter as shifters are tied to specific elements or things in nature.

Angels/Demons (Divine beings) can give power to mortal servants if they desire to. Usually that is in exchange for something, such as services or as a reward.

The second way is that your character knows magic based on that Goddess. Magic requires a source, belief and willpower. So if your character found a book/teacher/scroll/etc and manifested spider magic based on that it would work as well.

Now if you were looking to be more a spider shifter who also knows magic that could also be a thing. They'd be a spider shifter first, then also have at some point picked up learning magic to a degree.

Can my girlie be this? And like her mom would be the Arachnid spider-lineage. Like I don't know about all those level gift powers but some might be applicable? Lunacy (Rage?) doesn't work on the werespiders but Amnesia, Need to drink blood/no solid foods, and adheres to the Laws of Ananasa could be weaknesses.

They would. Depends on the idea of course, but pitch the idea and we'll work with the idea if it's a non-vampire.
 
Well, it's a bit hard to explain, but i was thinking of either a promethean the created type of undead or something where some inhuman entity is badsically puppeting a corpse

Personally, i prefer the latter idea, but whichever you think will fit in the story better will work fine with me
 
Yeah~yeah so like Boo gots one charrie on the go tryna figure out a Spider-Shifter lore and backstory with the boss.

If that don't vibe then I got a Force or Spirit Mage backup or possibly a Vamp. All will have some criminal backstory elements lol
 
Looks like it's gonna be an interesting group! I have a Forces/Matter-based Mage in the works myself.

~Physical Description:

Body Type: Toned and curvy.
Piercings: Nose, tongue, hood and ears.
Scars: Tummy, arms, left leg and ribs and back shoulder on left side.
Style: Thomasine usually wears dark eye makeup and neutral to earthy lipliner. Other than that, she keeps to her normal light tan complexion. Her skin darkens to a nice bronze once she is out under the moon a lot; freckles do appear to. Her hair is usually trimmed at chin length, but does grow it out to shoulder length during fall/winter. Right now she sports a bit of a bob cut look with a side part with bangs. She has a thing about sporting gems or trinkets at her forehead and putting on rather heavy mascara of late.

Thomasine does have quite the youthful face. There is a sweetness about her face that allows her to pass off for a school girl of 16-18 years old... that is until she lowers her chin and gives you 'the stare.' Her style is not that of a typical teen however. She wears more mature-styled clothing, but tends to err on the side of 80s-90s sensibilities... although she does have a weakness for all things with pandas on them. She does train and work out a lot and you may often find her swimming and riding bikes-- both motor and pedal-powered. And so she does tend to wear brands, shoes and gear reflecting her activities. But if she can go bare-foot she will do so.

~Background Story:

Not exactly a black sheep of the family but then again, not really the most praised either, Thomasine was one of the more entertaining vampires to watch over the years. The vampire was a welcome fresh breath of air. This female is an insane wolf in killer sheep's clothes; a friend of the night-wandering street people and an enemy to those that cheated justice. Any who escaped the Law, or those who were getting away with crimes she would kill. She used a straight razor to murder her victims, dumped their body into water to hide the fact that she fed off the bloodflow; this technique hid the fact that a vampire killed them.

Working as a night time bike courier and delivery person freed up her schedule to find and stalk 'bad people.' Yes, this is how she intends to feed, but it is also an outlet of her twisted 'saviour complex.' Even if you have already served your time, if she found out you were 'Wicked' she would 'cure you.' The cure is find you, kill you in secret, feed on your blood and then wash you in an open body of water and have you float away with the current. Your naked body would be adorned with shells, feathers, stones, flowers; anything that would symbolize tokens to allow passage to final rest. News media folks had nicknamed the unknown serial killer: 'L'ombre de L'eau' in French-speaking Canada. It means The Water Shadow. And in English-speaking Canada it was: 'Dead Ariel.' The name is a twist on a famous animated mermaid.

Right now she believes she is a hero that cures the world of its 'Wicked Disease.' It is only a matter of time before she deems humans as the scourge of life on earth unless she finds help. Normally she just hires out or dates junkie/prostitute Lessthans from whom she would feed without turning them. It is twisted but she feels sorry for them and will pay them for services.

But prior to all that she was a trained 'Rescinder' for her family and thus she was bloodline loyal. She held a very important position working for the LaFées; her group's main focus was to 'find loose ends and cut them off. Completely.' And so, Thomasine was commanded to stop her ways before things got out of control. Her Old Lineage family in Canada sent her here to New York to lay low and get lost into the crowd. Her murder streak could cause too much strife if found out. At first it was entertaining, but now too risky for their taste and even though she got away with it; enough was enough. She's been told to calm down and get some therapeutic help before she can go home. But those thoughts of 'curing the world' kept surfacing but Maman LaFée paid for the best occult/vampire psychologist so they have no doubt that the psyche ward team will remedy her daughter's 'curing steak.'

~Personality:

+ | Strong Work Ethic - Whatever she does, she gives it her all and will do the job well and get it done. She does not care for lazy people, but will try to get others to get off their asses and do something too. She has been training all her life to take on the role of 'Rescinder' for her family. Thomasine also makes it a point of being on time and communicating at all times too.
+ | Calm and Thoughtful - . The world could burn around her and she wouldn't so much as bat an eyelash. The girl is not the most spontaneous person, but she is, however, one of the most prepared. Actions have consequences and she always is considering them.
+ | Loyal and Protective - . A friend in need is a friend indeed. Well, it doesn't matter to this girl. If you have her back, you better believe she has yours. She tends to form strong bonds with people she cares for and that being the case, she defends them even if it means she will get violent to protect them.

- | Twisted Saviour Complex - . A hero. She truly believes she is a hero. Thomasine killed murderers, rapists, child abusers, hate criminals and fed off of them. She thinks she is making the world a better place each time she kills; she is giving the world a 'cure.'
- | Aggressive and Murderous - . If there is a fight to be had, she will step up and fight. All her actions have the consequences considered and as such, she has become somewhat arrogant; she is 'Rescinder' blooded afterall. And over the formative years, that subtle arrogance has turned her rather aggressive. And now if she can get away with it, Thomasine will even enter killing or even cold blooded murder into the equation. She is very dangerous; a ticking bomb set to explode in bloody red violence.
- | Soft Heart but Bloodine Bound- . As murderous and aggressive as she is, she does have too much sympathy for Lessthans. Of all people, it is they who have been targeted the most from all the hate and bigotry by children of the Veil. If she can spare money or time, she will aid those in need. She is very tender and compassionate to those whom she loves, but she must-- and will-- follow without question orders given to her by her family. Especially from reigning Matriarch, Premiere Maman Seraphine LaFée .

Telepathy: The power to read/sense another person’s thoughts, communicate with them mentally and/or control/manipulate their minds/thoughts.
Clairvoyance: The power to visually perceive events that are taking place elsewhere or sense places that are not in view. Clairvoyance gives her a 'danger sense' and allows her to react quicker in situations that call for quick reflexes or reactions. Night vision also works with this power.

+ | Powerful bloodliine - Even though she is a sleight girl, she is exceptionally strong, durable, fast and everlasting. She has years of combat training badassery and can swim like a dolphin and see in the dark. Not to mention she grows fangs and claws on command.
+ | Rescinder - As Sirène, she is a specialty operatives for the House LaFée that gives her certain privileges in certain vamp circles. Also bankrolled by the House as well so never has to worry about expenses.
+ | Psychic Resistance - With her psionic abilities, she has also built up defenses against others who would seek to dominate, mind-read or attack her mentally

- | Bloodline bound - She cannot live a life that is not dictated by the House of which she is blooded. She lives, fights and must die for the Matriarch Seraphine and the House LaFée. Any order given to her foregoes any contract or relationship she has created.
- | Sunlight Sensitive - Sunlight burns or otherwise hurts her. She has scars to prove it. But under the moonlight, she may actually get tanned. Any sunburn she takes, doubles her need for blood consumption.
- | Temporary Madness - Telepathy used to mind control others gives her temporary madness. The thoughts of others she tried to control will haunt her and she may believe that they are her own thoughts telling her to save them. Thus begins the cycle when she begins to desire to 'cure the world.' Diving in dark waters helps her calm and alleviate the madness.

Spirit Concept: Abyss


Physical Description: Host body is of average build, about five foot in height. Brown skin, though slightly blotchy and paled. Black hair that is in a short cropped cut. Eyes hazel, though dulled and hazy.
Currently wears only a pair of cut pants and a plain, white shirt. They prefer to go barefoot most of the time, their feet covered in cuts


Several injuries from host's death remain intact on the body, though to no lasting harm. These Injuries include bruising along the back, shoulders and hands. On the chest is a y shaped stitching from where the torso was put back together. The left eye socket seems to droop ever so slightly if unfocused.

Tattooed on their tongue is a odd symbol, which translates to 'bind' to anyone who knows how to read it.


True Form Description: Initially, they appear as a swirling mass of monochrome and color. Occasionally, a more comprehensible attachment, like a limb or eye for example, can appear.
The only consistent thing about their appearance is their mouth. Said maw is filled with an unearthly glow, and filled with thousands of teeth that seem to trail down their throat. Looking at said light too long causes nausea and migraines

Nyx's time in their host has greatly affected the appearance of their spiritual body a slightly more comprehensible shape. Though, this yet to be seen. Not even Nyx themselves is aware of this change yet




Background Story:
Far off in a plane beyond ours, a celestial wandered. For the longest time,Ny'xhaph, simply went about their purpose. It was like this for many centuries, as with any celestial.

But, far away, a woman named Shauna Tanners had met an unfortunate end. But that wasn't where things ended, because her body would be used in a ritual in attempts to bring her soul back

The magics of the ritual did not however manage to find Leah's soul, for it had long passed on. Instead, it had snagged the celestial, in a way that they couldn't break free, like tendrils sinking deep within them.

They were pulled from their plane, forced within Shauna's empty body. The entire process was painful and exhausting. And thanks to a arcane symbol tattooed under Shauna's tongue, they couldn't unpossess the mutilated corpse they found themselves entrapped in

The confused, pained and disoriented spirit remembers not much after that. All of it a haze as they were forced within the mortal plain, in a body they were so unfamiliar with. All they could do was escape in the confusion

Bound by the sigil and unable to escape the corpse they found themselves locked in, fled into the night, confused and in pain. Those that performed the ritual have been searching for them ever since, trying to get the original Shauna back, assuming that they had done something to Her's soul

Due to how recent their host's death was, they were was able to slip into her life for the time being quite easily. They took up a new name and decided to lay low. Though all they really want is to find a way to leave Shauna's body and flee this plane


Personality:
They often act spaced out or confused. Many might mistake them as a tourist with how often they seem unsure of their surroundings.
The more one sees of them, however, shows they possess some almost enlightened aspect to their personality

They often come off as cold towards others, although this is due to lack of lack of human understanding then actual cruelty towards others.
Other than that, they seem almost passive in their interactions with other, or even when not currently engaged with someone

They seem to be prone to mood swings, in a way that almost makes it seem like their unfamiliar with their very emotions



Skills, Proficiencies, Knowledges and Paranormal Abilities:
-'feeds' on magics or elements related to their concept, which empowers them with levels depending on the strength or ammount
-can sense other spirits in a close area
-Knowledgeable about spirits, celestials and a choice few other supernaturals
-Slightly stronger than the average person


Strengths:
-Doesn't become frightened easily
-Has a resistance against physical harm and disease
-Has a slightly higher pain tolerance than others
-Can be plenty intimidating if they wish.

Weaknesses:
-
Has a lack of understanding for own anatomy, so speech and movement are often impaired and unnatural at times
-Has a vulnerability towards certains certain kinds of magic, especially ones that are opposite to their concept
-If they exhaust themselves too greatly, they have to go into a resting period for a certain period of time
-They're not good at hiding their unnatural nature, leading to suspicions if noticed by the wrong people
