Although I do tend to agree with arguments that "X-men's themes are often weaker when there are other celebrated powered individuals", it doesn't have to be the case. I like the way this RP sounds so far. I'm character-and-theme focused to a fault yet I also love writing stylized action set pieces more than people like that tend to. Kingsman? I can do that.

My two concepts so far are:
  • Instructor or older student with empathy-based power copying, i.e. she can copy abilities but only when on a similar emotional wavelength to her target, thus limiting her access to special abilities. A personality like the stereotypical laid back, fresh-out-of-college substitute teacher with a hidden strength.
  • Not a mutant but a plucky, low-level sorceror from Kamar Taj dispatched to monitor the threat potential of mutants. Basically intended to report back to the Sorceror Supreme if things get too dangerous but maybe a bit too prideful and/or fond of his assignments to actually do it most of the time. Nowhere near Strange's level in terms of power or abilities. Think of any of the background extras or--at best--Mordo for ability.
Could there be problems with either?
I'll PM you!!

We'll probably plan an arc around this as well in the future, not directly helping Avengers but dealing with the effects of Thanos' invasion. Far future.

If I may... do we have any sort of idea for an ETA to start?

I don't know. Watching this awesome trailer. The music, Thanos' appeareance, and the Avengers. The latter is hopeless against him, and the damn music in the background is making sure of it. Damn. The trailer is better than the Justice League movie, lol.

I'm excited. Playing a mute character is going to be fantastic.

Uh I don't have one of those, I would just prefer the OOC for talks related to said RP. Using Skype and outside sources for what's provided here hasn't proved to be the best experiences for me.

Background info: The Original X-Men in this iteration were as follows: Charles Xavier (X), Erik Lensherr (Magneto), Raven Darkholme (Mystique), Henry McCoy (Beast), and James L. Howlett (Wolvyyy).

They were a covert team of gifted individuals in the 1980's that fought to protect the peace. For reasons unknown, they disbanded. Professor X is probably the only one that needs to be adapted for this arc, as Mystique and Magneto could possibly show up for what I have in mind. Wolvy and Beast aren't that important for this arc but if people come along and claim them then we can work them in.

Name:
Scott Summers

Nickname: Cyclops, Cyke, Scotty, Slim, Stick-in-the-Mud (if not worse), Boyscout
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 195 Ibs
Occupancy:
Student taking College level classes, Certified Pilot

Personality Goods:
  • Strong-willed
  • Self-Disciplined
  • Fearlessly Loyal

Personality Bads:
He is plagued both physically and emotionally by a lack of control. In a purely physical sense he is at the mercy of his powers, which he cannot turn off. If he is unable to control these powers, the people around him get hurt. Having already lost so many of his loved ones, he is very cautious about protecting what family he has left. This leaves him vulnerable to punishing himself for his failures and being overprotective at times. But beyond the physical aspects of control, the emotional control is often just as serious. Growing up he was already influenced by the military to restrain and discipline emotions, but seeing his parents die in a plane crash pushed those emotions to limits his young mind couldn't handle. So growing up he has to deal with chaotic emotions that he doesn't always understand and has difficulty expressing. So normal acts like showing affection to someone he cares about and seeking intimate relationships are much more difficult.

Hobbies and Skills:

  • Studying- Scott has an innate talent for Mathematics(especially Geometry) as well as Tactical Analysis, having committed various famous war manuals (such as Sun Tzu's "The Art Of War" and Karl von Clausewitz's "On War") to memory in just a couple of years.
  • Martial Arts- Having made it his goal to turn himself into a formidable combatant, he asked fellow student and ex-military James Proudstar to teach him hand-to-hand combat, and to this day he remains as his most constant sparring partner. Jean has also helped him with gaining better command of his powers through meaditation and breathing techniques.
  • Piloting- Despite his traumatic accident, Scott is a natural in the cockpit, and even managed to get a Pilots licence before his eighteenth birthday.

Visor: The mask Scott wears to prevent random discharge is lined with powdered ruby quartz crystal. It incorporates two longitudinally mounted flat lenses which can lever inward providing a constantly variable exit slot of 0 inches to .79 inches in height and a constant width of 5.7 inches. The inverted clam-shell mechanism is operated by a twin system of miniature electrical motors. As a safety factor their is a constant positive closing pressure provided by springs. The mask itself is made of high-impact plastic. There is an overriding finger-operated control mechanism on either side of the mask, and normal operation is through a flat micro-switch installed in the thumb of either glove.

Optic Energy Blasts: Cyclops possesses the mutant ability to project a beam of concussive, ruby-colored force from his eyes. Cyclops's eyes are no longer the complex organic jelly that utilizes the visible spectrum of light to see the world around it. Instead, they are inter-dimensional apertures between this universe and another, non-Einsteinium universe, where physical laws as we know them do not pertain. This non-Einsteinium universe is filled with particles that resemble photons, yet they interact with this universe's particles by transferring kinetic energy in the form of gravitons (the particle of gravitation). These particles generate great, directional concussive force when they interact with the objects of this universe.

Cyclops's mind has a particular psionic field that is attuned to the forces that maintain the apertures that have taken the place of his eyes. Because his mind's psionic field envelops his body, it automatically shunts the other-dimensional particles back into their point of origin when they collide with his body. Thus, his body is protected from the effects of the particles, and even the thin membrane of his eyelids is sufficient to block the emission of energy. The synthetic ruby quartz crystal used to fashion the lenses of Cyclops's eyeglasses and visor is resonant to his minds' psionic field and is similarly protected.

The width of Cyclops's eye-blast seems to be focused by his mind's psionic field with the same autonomic function that regulated his oriinal eyes' ability to focus. As Cyclops focuses, the size of the aperture changes and thus act as a valve to control the flow of particles and beam's relative power. The height of Cyclops's eye-blast is controlled by his visor's adjustable slit. His narrowest beam, about the diameter of a pencil at a distance of 4 feet has a force of about 2 pounds per square inch. His broadest beam, about 90 feet across at a distance of 50 feet, has a force of about 10 pounds per square inch. His most powerful eye-blast is a beam 4 feet across which, at a distance of 50 feet, has a force of 500 pounds per square inch. The maximum angular measurement of Cyclops's eye-blast is equivalent to a wide-angle 35mm camera lens field of view (90 degree measured diagonally, or the angle subtended by holding this magazine's pages spread open, upright at 9.5 inches from your eyes). The minimum angular measurement is equivalent to the angle that the thickness of a pencil would subtend at 4 feet (3.5 degree, about a quarter of an inch viewed at 4 feet). The beam's effective range is about 2,000 feet, at which point a 1-inch beam has spread out to 10 feet square, and then has a pressure of .38 pounds per square inch. Cyclops's maximum force is sufficient to tip over a filled 5,000 gallon tank at a distance of 20 feet, or puncture a 1-inch carbon-steel plate at a distance of 2 feet.

The extra dimensional supply of energy for Cyclops's eye-blast is practically infinite. Thus, so long as Cyclops's psionic field is active (which is constantly), there is the potential to emit energy. The only limit to the eye-blast is the mental fatigue of focusing constantly. After about 15 minute of constant usage, the psionic field subsides and allows only a slight leakage of energy to pass through the aperture. Cyclops's metabolism will recover sufficiently for him to continue in about an additional 15 minutes.

Background:
When Scott was just a little boy, his world was turned upside down. On what was meant to be a routine flight alongside her air-force parents and little sib' Alex, a bright flash heralded the snuffing out of the normal future this family thought it had in store. With the airplane's controls failing, a crying mother lashed her two children together in the only available parachute and sent them out into the stormy night. When Scott Summers woke up, it was in a hospital, weeks later, and he had gone from a blissful child to an amnesiac orphan in short order.

Heavily traumatized, the boy was unable to accept that his parents and brother were gone, that he had no memory of losing them, that he could barely remember their faces, their names. The Doctor overseeing his case, Essex, took a curious amount of interest in him, and kept watch over Scott. After a few weeks, a dream hit him. He and Alex, falling away from flames, and his eyes lit up, shooting fire and force, slowing his descent. When he came to, all he knew was fire and smoke - the same optic blasts, now rendered uncontrollable by the damage he'd suffered in his fall, had torn the upper floor of the hospital apart. Again his world and his mind fell into darkness.

When he awoke, it was a year later, and he'd gone from the west coast to the midwest, placed in a Foundling's Home in Nebraska. Here, Scott was overseen by the reclusive Dr. Millbury, who put his charges through test after test in an effort to gauge 'special development'. During his time here, he was constantly bullied by the boy with whom he shared a bunk, and was constantly getting into fights. As time wore on, she began to have headaches, and Millbury called in a specialist, who diagnosed him with a rare form of macular degeneration and prescribed the use of a specialized set of lenses constructed from a rare ruby quartz matrix.

During a group outing, a fight with one of the other orphans lead to Scotts powers triggering, a lash of red energy blasting from his eyes and knocking out the support struts on a nearby crane. As the debris cascaded down towards a crowd of terrified bystanders, he let her powers lose again, obliterating the rest of the falling crane and saving everyone. Convinced he'd attacked them all, the crowd began to froth into a mob, and Scott escaped on foot, finding escape on a freight train heading east.

On his own, Scott fell in with a group of thieves running a racket in Pennsylvania. It was here he fell under the sway of Jack "the Diamond" Winters, a local bookie, who raised the teenager from then on, instilling in him a sense of bullying street 'code' and using him as a tool of extortion and intimidation, all the while hammering compliance into him with gaslighting and emotional abuse. Eventualy, Jack made a misstep, and was encroached upon by the FBI. Caught red-handed in a sting, Jack and Scott were separated, and Scott was brought in by the FBI, but instead of incarceration, he was visited by a very interesting person; the geneticist Charles Xavier.

Xavier took Scott and set about teaching him that he had more value than he attributed to himself - something he is to this day working on - and teaching him about the coming storm that faced all of humanity. He saw the isolated instances of violence like the one he'd experienced and knew they'd only increase as people like the two of them became increasingly common and visible. Though it took some finishing, he eventually won over his confidence and got him to listen to his way of thinking. He followed Xavier around as this new father figure began to assemble other youth in revolt and training them, both mentally and physically, to protect humanity. "The time will come," he would say, "when those with extraordinary power and without responsibility will use their gifts for the worst possible ends. We must combat this, and show the world that people like us will always be more a force for good than ever for evil."

Extra: His garandparents own an Air Delivery Company at his home in Anchorage, Alsaka. He visits them during the holidays and works part-time as a Bush Pilot.

"Seven years ago the called him the Harlem Terror....and now the hail him as Incredible. It's in our hands to prove that we ain't the monsters they wish to label us as."

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 190lbs.

Occupancy: Unemployed.

Personality Goods:
  • Patient
  • Relaxed
  • Perseverent
  • Observant
  • Cautious
  • Smart
  • Adaptable
Personality Bads:
  • Judgmental
  • Reserved
  • Cunning
  • Manipulative
  • Untrusting
Hobbies and Skills:
[spacer]He is very good at making floral arrangements. He knows how to juggle. He has very fine motor function and a steady hand. He can lie fluently. He knows how to pick locks and get around security systems. And naturally, he learned how to fist fight from his three older brothers.

Powers & Abilities:
Night Vision -
[spacer]He has very strong nighttime vision. He can see things in complete darkness like someone could see them in the middle of the day. His eyes are very sensitive to light, and he has to wear prescription sunglasses during the daytime.

Shadow Manipulation -
[spacer]He can reach his senses out into the shadows around him with a range of fifteen yards. He can condense these shadows into solid form and manipulate them as he sees fit.

Shadow Blasts -
[spacer]Falling into the same branch as Shadow Manipulation, he can further condense shadows into small balls. He tends to practice juggling with them rather than using them for any sort of combat purpose, but he's discovered that they have a tendency to explode like little black firecrackers when dropped. After an incident of drunken stupidity during which he thought of making them bigger than tennis ball sized, he discovered that the small blast was enough to ensure that he didn't get the deposit back on his apartment. He doesn't especially want to see what happens if they get past soccer ball size.

Darkness -
He can release condensed darkness that can temporarily blind his targets.

Backstory:
[spacer]Leone grew up in a big house with a big family. He's the youngest of five, with three older brothers and an older sister. His mother homeschooled all of them, presumably because his sister started to show that she wasn't normal. Then his brother started not being normal as well. At least his mother was familiar with the issues they all faced with their blooming powers, so when he started showing his, his mother hardly batted an eye at it.

[spacer]His father, being an average person who loved his wife despite her own oddities, accepted all of them without too much difficulty. Of course, he did tend to get mad when Naiya got frustrated with her math work and caused the house to be filled with fog. And let's not forget when Kyle started a downpour in the workshop after busting his knuckles working on his truck.

[spacer]He liked doing landscaping as he started to grow up, but instead studied floral design because he couldn't handle being out in the sun for extended periods of time. He was working at a floral arrangements shop during the New York invasion, and had to use his abilities to fight off some of the aliens that tried to get in. Of course, he did have some help by way of some lunatic with a bow and arrows who was out and about at the time. The guy came back to visit a few times to buy flowers for some lady.

[spacer]About a month after the invasion, Leone was laid off. He's still not entirely sure why, but he suspects that it was because someone had seen or heard about his powers and his boss didn't like it.[/spacer]
