The Twin Blades

Hori Midori growled as she walked, rubbing the red mark on her face. She’d run into Akimoto Yuki, an old classmate, earlier and the encounter left Midori mad and frustrated. For some reason unknown to her, Akimoto had always taunted her whenever she could. It drove Midori absolutely nuts trying to figure out why the other girl enjoyed picking on her, but for whatever reason Yuki did.

Like a few times before, Midori had retaliated with biting words and sarcastic comments of her own, but unlike the other times Midori had crossed an unknown invisible line, which had resulted in a pissed off Akimoto slapping her in the face.

She sighed and glared at the sidewalk. ‘What would Ichiro-kun say, I wonder?’ she thought, running a hand through her hair. ‘Probably that I deserved it and that my mouth will get me into horrible trouble one day.’

"You deserved it and your mouth will get you into horrid trouble one day Mi-chan."
Ichiro had materialised at her side in an instant.
"Bet you were thinking that's what I would say? Well it is kind of true, but Yuki has a tendency to be harsh when you don't deserve it. And I bet you're now thinking of the best way to get her back. Am I right?"

Ichiro looked up at the pale blue sky and sighed.
"You have quite the agressive tendency. If you calmed down a bit and just laughed those bullies off, then they'd give up and all your problems would go away."
He knew this was sound advice as he had used this against some bullies a year ago, and they hadn't bothered him since. Despite this, he knew his words would be lost on his best friend.
"And now you're going to come back at me with a sarcastic comment of course."
Ichiro was now pondering the fact he knew Midori a little too well...

Midori rolled her eyes. It was only years of practice that stopped her from jumping out of her skin when Ichiro suddenly appeared. He'd been doing it so often that she was completely used to it by now.

The girl tapped her chin, "You're right, I am. Do you think I could figure out a way to dye her hair green without her knowing it was me?"

Midori sighed, rolling her eyes again and tugged on one of her pigtails. "Well it's all fine and dandy that laughing them off worked for you Ichi-kun, but I tried that remember and it didn't work. And could you stop doing that? It's like you're inside my head."

"Well that's what being best friends with someone for God only knows how many years will do to you. I AM inside your head. And it's a pretty empty place" he laughed, knowing he'd probably get a punch as a result, but he didn't mind. When it came to the pair of them, any jokes like that were only ever in good fun.

"And the answer to your question is no. I'm about 97% sure there's no way you could dye her hair green without her knowing. Pretty sure it can be done, but you're on your own with that one, Mi-chan. And for the record, the only reason it didn't work was because you laughed AT them, not laughed them off. I should know, I was there."

Midori punched him on the arm. She would aim for his shoulder but he was taller then she was and she couldn't reach "Oh shut up," she said, but she was grinning

"Awe you're not going to help me Ichi-kun?" She pouted, " Fine ruin my fun, I'll convince one of my brothers then. Oh bite me, they deserved it. Besides I found their comments funny, how could I not laugh at them? Anyway what's the difference? They probably wouldn't have stopped. I think I have an invisible sign on me somewhere that says 'Pick On Me'."

She glanced around, they hadn't really payed attention to where they were, or at least she hadn't, but they were close to one of their usual spots. A meadow that they hung out in a lot

He hated when she pouted. She was just so damn adorable it was hard not to agree to help her.
"Oh God help us all if you get your whole family involved in your desire for petty revenge..."
Ichiro looked around, then ahead at the meadow.

"We come to this spot way to much. I love it here though, just me and you, no one else around! We can do whatever the heck we like."
He stopped dead in his tracks, realising what he'd said.
"I uh...um...race you!"
He darted off towards the meadow, hoping the race would make Midori forget he'd even said anything at all.

The girl smirked. Her family, her brothers in particular, were very protective of her and if she told them that Yuki had slapped her it didn't matter that Yuki was a girl, they'd help her get her revenge and probably get some of their own too. Probably dye her skin orange or something.

She blinked, "Wait what?" But he was running before the words were completely out of her mouth.

"Ichi-kun wait up!" she laughed. What the hell had he meant? "Ichiro!" She caught up to him and grabbed his hand, doing her best to pull him to a stop. "Ichiro... What did you mean by that?"

Ichiro felt his friend grab his hand, but strangely didn't break away once she had.
"I don't know what I meant. I just meant what I meant."
He knew that made no sense whatsoever, but strangely enough that was the point. If he could confuse her enough, he hoped she would just drop it. The fact he had a crush on her was not something he was ready to talk about, and losing his best friend just wasn't worth the risk unless he knew she felt exactly the same way.

He started pulling her towards the far end of the meadow. They had never fully explored this place, but today would be different.
"Come on Mido-chan, let's see just how far this meadow stretches!"
He mentally facepalmed. He had called her Mido. Just like he only ever called her Midori when he was angry or needed to be deadpan serious with her, he only ever called her Mido when he was really nervous, and he knew she knew that...

Midori raised an eyebrow at his words but let him pull her towards the end of the meadow without comment. She'd figure out wha he meant sooner or later, she always did. For now she let herself enjoy the fact that he was holding her hand.

"Mido-chan?" He was nervous. Why, she didn't know. "Ichi-kun, what's wrong? You know you can tell me anything. I won't get mad. Not with you, never with you, and I won't stop being your friend no matter what," she didn't mention she wanted to be more then friends however, "so please Ichiro-kun tell me what's bothering you."

Ichiro sighed. As much as he was in her head, it was inevitable she was inside his head too.
"Really Mi-chan, there's nothing to worry about. Let's just explore the meadow like we-"
He cut himself off mid-sentence. He had looked around and saw something he had never seen before. A small opening between two close trees, and an almost haunting light coming from between them. Even more so, he felt some kind of weird pull. Like he had to go and investigate, no matter what.
"Let's go that way Mi-chan." he continued, still holding her hand.
He pulled her towards the gap in the trees, his mind now entirely focused on what was behind them.

"Alright Ichi-kun. But I'm not dropping it. I know something is bugging you and I want to know what it is."

She glanced toward the trees when Ichiro had trailed off, feeling an odd pull as well. Following him, she gripped his hand tighter. She was a little worried about what was behind the pull, but she knew they had to go see what was causing it. They had to or they'd go mad. Slipping in between the too trees, the two of them were now standing in another clearing.

Two swords were in the ground in the middle of the meadow. Midori had no idea how she knew, but it was those two swords causing the pull.

Ichiro said nothing. He felt Midor clutch his hand tighter and couldn't help but feel reassured by it. He stared at the blades for some time, being more pulled by the one on the left. He felt something dark coming from the other one. He turned and looked at Midori after what felt like ages
"Mi-chan...this is going to sound so messed up, even for me...but that blade on the left. I think...I think it's calling me somehow."
It was beautifully crafted for sure, as was the other. Why someone would just leave two such elegant blades lying around, he had no idea. He slowly reached out his free hand, inching moment by moment towards the handle, not knowing what would happen when he touched it.

[[Hmmm, I know Ichiro and Midori are probably gonna end up in some kind of long-term fight with each other, but should we introduce a 'bad guy' of sorts that might force them to come back together in the end? After all, true love conquers all! =P]]

Midori gasped and looked at the blades. They were both beatiful. She wasn't as much of a fighter, at least not physically. She liked using her words to hurt people, but she did know how to sword fight.

"It doesn't seem so weird Ichi-kun," she said softly, pulling her eyes away from the one on the right That one was calling to her. The one on the left, it didn't feel right to her, but she knew it'd be right for Ichiro. "I think the one on the right is for me," she said Unwillingly pulling her hand out of her friend's she walked toward the other blade, hesitating as she reached for it.

'It'll be alright' a voice in her head told her comfortingly 'Just take it, it's for you after all.' Midori nodded and grabbed the blade.

[[I was just thinking that. It would add an extra dimension to the story and in everything I've written and watched there is always an overreaching villain... It could be like Chaos in Sailor Moon... or something. I like that idea]]

Ichiro responded in kind, placing his hands on the hilt of the left blade. With one swift motion, he drew it from the ground. The very tip of the blade gleamed in the sharp, crisp sunlight. He swiftly brought it down, and it seemed to cut through the air itself as he did. He had been trained in the ways of the sword, and this blade just felt so...perfect! Not heavy, but not so light it would just fly out of his hand. Everything he could ever have dreamed of, except of course for impressing and wooing Midori with his skills. Forcing that thought from his mind, for it was making him blush, he turned to his best friend, a massive grin etched across his face.

[[Even better, although the blades bring out their natural differences, I reckon it's this villain who amplifies that and actually turns them on each other? Something from just these few posts it seems obvious they might never do otherwise]]

Midori laughed as she swung the sword in a circle. None of the swords she'd ever used had felt so great before. It was the perfect weight for her, and it was balanced perfectly. It was like it was made for here and just waiting here for her to pick it up and use it. She turned to Ichiro, a matching grin to his on her own face "Ichi-kun... this is awesome" she breathed.

[[That makes perfect sense. I've been trying to figure out how to get Midori to turn against Ichiro in a natural way and she doesn't seem to want too]]

"I know, Mi-chan! I have no idea what kind of person would just leave these here, but this blade is just so...me!"
He spun it around and did a little showing off. Without either of them probably having even noticed, two sheathes had appeared beside where the blades had resided only moments ago. Ichiro leaned down and picked his up. He fastened it to his belt and sheathed the blade.
"How do I look?" he asked, his gaze fixed solidly on Midori.

[[True, true. How do you want to play this villain out?]]

The girl giggled at how excited her old friend was. It was a good look on him. She grabbed her own sheathe and sheathed her sword. She wasn't wearing a belt like Ichiro was, so she would carry it for now, but she'd start wearing belts in the future.

"Very nice," she giggled, "very handsome." She stopped for a moment, her face heating up as her words caught up with her. "I mean, I meant to say... I meant... Ah just forget I said that." Her face was very red now and she felt like she wanted to disappear.

[[I think the villain should remain ambiguous and shadowy for a while and then come out into the open]]

Ichiro's face went as red as hers, but he chose not to acknowledge it.
"Why thanks Mi-chan, you look pretty suave yourself. You should come round to mine when you've got a little time. Sensei can teach you some things about sword play far better than I ever could. Heck, I bet with a little training you'd surpass me in no time!"

He started back towards the gap in the trees. He grabbed Midori by her free arm and started walking with her.
"We could totally duel and everything! I'd have to let you win of course because if I didn't you'd literally kick me up the backside..."

Midori smiled, thankful that Ichiro did not bring attention to her words, she was still bright red though. They'd talk about it later she was sure, about what she had said and why he'd been so nervous earlier, but for now it didn't matter.

"I don't know about that Ichi-kun, you're pretty good with swords."

She laughed and nudged him playfully. "I would too and you know it. You might not even have to let me win either. We both know I'm stubborn enough, but you letting me win is nice too."

"True. In fact, your stubbornness is a pretty useful trait I'd say. After all, stubborn people never know when to quit. Which can be pretty handy at times I'd say."
He smiled at the thought of not having to let her win. Somehow he thought she would be as natural with a sword as he was. At the very least, a natural with her new sword.
"Come on, let's go to mine and practice! We can slice some bamboo to shreds and work out all your pent up aggression. It's really soothing after a long, hard day. You can even pretend it's Yuki...as long as you don't go around actually cutting her up!" he added quickly.
He started pulling her in the direction of his house.
