"Have a nice nap."
Varanense ‘Vara’ Malx

Age: 17
Gender: Male
Appearance: Varanense’s hair is blond, kept out of his dark green eyes by a white bandana. His skin is sunbaked in a way that isn’t particularly attractive, resembling dirt more than delicious chocolate. While his body frame is slight, mainly due to the fact that he never did any proper strength training, his fingers are scarred and callused from endless hours of archery training. Often, he wears his father’s old clothes for combat situations. It’s a soft blue long coat that’s probably too flashy for a marksman like himself, but he likes it. It’s comfortable, after all. Like most men of the Malx family, Varanense is on the tall side of things, standing at 5’9.

Personality: Varanense is a collected, reserved young man who rarely shouts or screams or whatever else other kids his age do. He can be irritated, amused, or disappointed, but his emotions are always kept in check by a poker face that’s nigh impenetrable. In fact, he wears his calm façade so often that most think that something is wrong when he removes that facial mask. Unlike many others in the Guardians, Varanese does his job out of obligation and responsibility, not personal interest or ideals. A professional, he keeps his thoughts rational and avoids conflict whenever possible, relying on his negotiation skills rather than his crossbow. As a matter of fact, Varanense does his best to avoid killing altogether, instead developing his own style to drain and weaken his opponents until they sorta just…fall over, exhausted.

Short Biography: The Malx family was a lineage of ranged champions that had served under the Guardian faction for many generations, and Varanense wasn’t an exception to this. He was trained to hold a bow, to fire where he predicts the target would be, and, most importantly, how to harness the powers of the Arcane in tandem with his archery. It could almost be said that his parents trained him harder than any past generation, because, after seven generations of being the most prominent family of ranged champions, there was finally a rival. The filthy Assans, who serve underneath the banner of Aesil, utilizing their fancy cursed archery and getting all the recognition, while casting a shadow over the proud name of Malx.

Varanense, personally, didn’t have much beef with the Assans, but he didn’t dislike the hard training as well. There wasn’t anything particularly important that happened in his life after that, until the Sentence happened. He was still a trainee in the Guardians then, and when the skys split, taking away all of his family, the boy felt very sad. He felt grief not only for the loss of his parents, but for the loss of everyone else’s loved ones as well. It was then that he began to research another way of using his magic, one that didn’t involve hurting other people.

He holds that feeling of loss in his heart, and doesn’t want others to have that same feeling. Thus, the young man researched arrows of the arcane manner, turning ‘weapons’ into ‘carriers’ for a variety of spells meant to weaken targets until they are brought to the point of collapse. He trained regularly with the Arcane regiments of the Guardians, sharpening his exhaustion spells until they could be used on the battlefield. When the Overworld Alliance removed Goetia from power and turned it into an institution of magical knowledge, Varanense was one of the first to enroll there, picking up illusionary spells that he couldn’t ever have mastered within the Guardians. By the end of his six months in Goetia, Varanense could finally deem himself strong enough in this new method of fighting to go back into active duty.

Then again, other than the constant vampire threat, it looked like there wasn’t exactly anything to be scared of anymore. Aesil and Palace were getting along, while Goetia’s dark side had up and disappeared. It was looking to be an era of peace…

And then, the Eudasti Empire came.

Abilities
Mortal Coils – As a magic marksman, Varanense can imbue his crossbow bolts with ‘weight’, causing both the mind and the body of others to feel heavier and under more stress than normal, with this effect stacking with every successful hit. While the arrow themselves are basically a non-factor against anyone wearing armour, that’s fine with Varanense. It is the Mortal Coil’s ability to increase the fatigue of the target that truly matters.

Ceasefire – If Mortal Coil was the arrow that exhausted and slowly robbed someone's ability to move their minds and their limbs, Ceasefire is the arrow that seals their access to their supernatural or superhuman abilities, from their ability to cast certain spells to their ability to use certain physical techniques. Operating on the same concept as Mortal Coil, the only difference is that Ceasefire is blue, while Mortal Coil is red.

Illusive Marksman – After six months in Goetia, Varanense, while he hasn’t exactly become a master mage, has specialized to the extent that he can create an illusion of himself that covers three senses. It’ll smell like him, look like him, sound like him, and, if it wasn’t for the fact that strong physical impacts would cause the illusion to explode, it’d probably taste and feel like him as well. This illusion can effectively operate at a range of 500 meters away from him, and Varanense is also capable of commanding the illusion to do things such as dance, speak, or whatever else.

Though it’ll take more effort on his part, he can change that illusion’s appearance to someone else. It’d still sound and smell like him, however.

Equipment
A Knife, more for cutting ropes or other things than for combat.
A Crossbow with twenty bolts. The Crossbow is damn big, but the pulley system makes it easy enough to draw back the string. Most of the propulsion power comes from magic anyways.
Binoculars, for when his eyes aren’t good enough.

@ERode

Varanense mechanics!

Varanense Malx
Mortal Coils - Scales with Arcane
Separate from normal damaging rolls, Varanense's shots can inflict an exhausting debuff on the target (Arcane vs. Fortitude). For every two shots that succeed in debuffing the target, the target gets a stack of Exhaustion, which raises the Health points required to experience exhaustive effects by 1 (for example, a target with 6 total health and 1 stack of Exhaustion will get -1 to all stats at 4 health rather than 3). Exhaustion stacks do trigger successive exhaustive effects.
Ceasfire - Scales with Arcane
Varanense can fire an arrow that silences the use of one activated ability for 2 turns (does not stack, and cannot be used to silence multiple abilities at the same time).
Illusive Marksman - Scales with Arcane
Generates a virtual copy of Varanense than can be controlled as a free action the turn after activation. Illusion cannot interact with the world and can be dispelled as a free action by opponents within range. Can Extra Effort to generate the image of someone else.
