Being Nelone's sole Grimm-scout left Koa with several responsibilities: warning the group of a horde, or a particularly dangerous Ursa; mapping the surrounding area and taking note of any changes; occasionally walking up and down the raised highway structure Nelone was settled on to check for structural concerns. Babysitting, however, was not meant to be one of Koa's responsibilities. Somehow, despite this, she was always the one designated to hunt down Hya when dinner was ready—a meal tradition she hardly ever took part in herself, given the awkwardness between her and Hya's family. She had her concerns that his family might be worried for Hya's safety outside Nelone when he accompanied her on scouting endeavors, though it wasn't a discussion she ever held with them. She just had her suspicions. She felt like she was always walking on fractured glass around those two...

Nevertheless, they still had the gall to send her out to Hya's tinker-shack to remind him, for the millionth time, that dinner was going to get cold. It probably already was cold... For August, Mantle was viciously cold. She could feel the snow in the clouds, smell it through her frozen nostrils; it was waiting to blanket Nelone and make their lives a frozen hell for the twentieth time. Hya claimed he could make it easier on them this year, but she had her doubts. After all, he said that last year too. Oh, she wasn't doubting his abilities—she saw his scrawled notepad describing how his proposed contraption would function. He probably had the know-how and the materials to put it all together before the first snowfall, but that's the only part she doubted: that he'd do it. She sighed in frustration as she wrapped her thin arms tightly around her stomach to contain her body heat. She was within view of Hya's shack now, but she couldn't hear the tell-tale sound of metal-on-metal or a sizzling flame. At least that meant she wouldn't be interrupting anything.

Koa knocked—no, pounded—on Hya's door, shacking the make-shift shack in its entirety. Nothing. After waiting a few moments she knocked again, this time a little gentler. Again, nothing. Odd. Rather than waste her time in the cold with another knock, she pulled the door open an inch and peeked inside without a sound. His chair was empty, his desk clean. He must not have been in there all day... But she didn't remember seeing him around Nelone either.

In a slight panic, Koa opened the door and stepped inside, letting it slam behind her—a result of harsh Autumn winds. She opened his desk drawer slowly, finding both Hya's black vest and green hazard gloves tucked away and folded neatly. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw his beloved shotgun propped up against the wall in the same exact position she'd saw him leave it last night.

She was out the door in an instant, sprinting back to Nelone without so much as a thought to the blistering cold she felt on her face and hands. She hopped over a sizable crack in the highway platform, landing clumsily due to her panicked speed. She knew Hya had woken up early this morning, she'd heard so much from his family, but they'd all assumed he went to his shack as-per-usual. It appeared that wasn't the case.

Koa flew through the front door to the Lyall house—the second largest building in Nelone behind the community hall, and also the only heated building aside from the community hall. Luckily, the dining room was directly through the front door.

"When was the last time you two saw Hya?" She frantically asked, before taking a seat and stuffing a spoonful of some kind of soup into her mouth (undoubtedly meant for Hya), "His shack is empty, untouched. Did he mention anything this morning? Did you see him at all, or hear him?"

Hya shouted a curse and pounded his forehead into his latest contraption, releasing an array of sparks. He hated electronics with an infinite passion. He woke up bright and early to prepare a surprise for his family, and Nelone as a whole, but it was taking longer than expected. A lot longer. Nearly twelve hours longer.

He was situated at the base of the highway's nearest support to Nelone, inside a small industrial crawlspace with wiring galore. What should've have been his dream-come-true had become his worst nightmare. A store of power directly under their feet, connected to lighting and heating suitable for all of Nelone? Amazing! Perfect! If only he hadn't been the victim of an Ursa attack the first time he stopped to wonder just what was inside that crawlspace. The Ursa nearly knocked the whole support pillar down, giving Nelone a good shake about fifty feet above. This happened two weeks ago, and he'd only returned last night to survey the damage. That was when he found this God-sent gift. A miracle.

A miracle that had him pulling his hair out.

He could hardly contain his excitement last night when he got home, so he ruined the surprise for his sister, Scilla, because, if nothing else, he knew she was capable of keeping a secret. Especially when he made her pinky-promise to keep it a secret until his surprise was ready.

At the very least, he was nearly finished... One circuit was causing issues, but he had a spare that would function well enough back in his shack. Reluctantly, he pushed himself free of the crawlspace and began the very anxiety-inducing, very cold fifty-foot climb to the top of the highway they called home.

SCILLA LYALL
//Nelone, 4:48 PM, 27 Aug 0020

She'd done it again, she thought as she peeled her face off of the stack of papers lying over her thighs. Well, not again. Scilla often fell asleep on her book's copy-in-progress during the day, after spending a late night working on it. But this time, Scilla had been rewriting the ending. She'd never tried it before - it felt like she may as well be ripping up the last ten pages and burning them. But A Lass from Menagerie shouldn't have concluded with Lynnen Usama bowing to the humans' will. It should've ended in her severing from the integrated Huntsmen union, and striking out on her own. But as she'd found, that was more of a beginning.

She heard a familiar voice and huffed, shaking the sleep out of her eyes. So loud... Scilla plodded up the rickety basement stairs. She locked the library behind her, hid the key in a quickly-opened rift, and peered out from behind the corner. Koa. Hya's follower. "Wha..." After a bleary head shake, the words came together in her mind. "I've been in the library all day. Copying a technical manual," she said. The first half was true. "Why? I thought he was with you." She pursed her lips, feeling the freeze in the air at the thought of her brother being MIA. "Should we look for him?" Scilla started to pull on her coat, a puffy blue thing surprisingly devoid of rips. "That little nerd..."

CASPIAN LYALL
//Nelone, 4:50 PM, 27 Aug 0020

"He's not in the shack?" Caspian asked at the same time as his daughter. He pushed his hair out of his gold eyes with his fingers. "Gods, this is my fault." He'd been questioning his method of parenting with increasing frequency ever since Rowanne had walked out. Ro had known Hya and Scilla for so little time, and yet... she'd never let them out of her sight.

Caspian? Caspian knew that this world wasn't like the Golden Age. That he needed to teach his children how to function on their own, with as much love as he could. But every time Scilla locked herself in the library pit, or Hya disappeared into his shack, Caspian questioned himself.

And he questioned, with cold catching in his throat every time, fourteen years after the fact: how could someone who spent so much time with her children just walk away from them?

"Scilla, pack Hya's soup. We're not sitting down until we know where he is."

Ochre eyes narrowed and twitched. "He's probably just scavenging somewhere. We'll find him before the stew gets cold." But Scilla drew her burnt hand in a line through the air, opening the rift again. Her other hand plucked the bowl off the table and stored it near the front of the pocket dimension. He knew she was prepared for anything, she was sure.

Koa didn't have to wait long for a response. First, she received a rather groggy welcome from Scilla, then an actual answer to her question. The library, of course... Scilla's equivalent of Hya's shack. The two were two peas sometimes, even if they'd rather not admit it. Thinking about it made her feel a little upset, though... Both of Caspian's kids, both of whom he clearly held close to his heart, hardly spent time around their home. And what a home it was, too... A fireplace in nearly every room, each with individual chimneys, and real architectural structure? Nobody had it this nice in Nelone. It was all designed by Caspian's long-gone lover, and built by the two by hand. They even had a basement! Oh, how long had it taken Caspian to dig that sucker out? Scilla sure seemed to appreciate it, though, given that she spent nearly all of her time down there. When compared to the shacks that had been popping up ever since Rowanne's eye for architecture and design had left them? It could've been Heaven on Remnant.

"I haven't seen him all day, Scilla..." She interjected, before Caspian made his appearance.

She let the two talk for a moment or two, each muttering a short phrase after the news settled in. Koa's face stiffened a bit when Scilla removed Hya's soup from in front of her, but she knew it was for the best. There wouldn't be any left for Hya if she had her way; she was starving.

"Okay! Let's go find us a nerd." Koa agreed with Scilla's off-handed statement, although she was sure it would apply to the female sibling just as well.

"You two check the shack, see if I missed anything. I'll go ask around town." Koa determined she'd be the best to decide their course of action—she probably knew Hya best, after all. She pushed her chair back and walked between the two present Lyalls, and right out the door. Back into the cold. After just two or three short minutes of heat, her body was just starting to adjust away from the frigid temperatures... Wasted energy, apparently.

Her first stop would be the community center, another of Rowanne's masterful creations. The only two-story building in Nelone, with one giant central courtyard harboring one big fire and one big chimney. The entire town would settle there on cold days like these... It was the best place to find information quickly.

"Oh, my... We need a new way to get up here." Hya determined, for the millionth time, after climbing for what felt like forever. They had zipline-type contraptions, designed by himself, to get down in a rush, but getting up was such a hassle. They had two options: north ladder, south ladder. What diversity. And, worst of all, he'd forgotten his gloves in his shack! The metal rungs left his hands unbelievably raw—liike the one time Dad tried cooking meat that didn't come from a can they salvaged. That poor chicken, and their poor stomachs... To this day he'd retch at the smell of chicken, he was sure of it.

After collapsing and resting on the group near the ladder for a minute to rest his muscles, Hya took to his feet and stretched. His first time up on the highway since this morning, and he had to admit he missed it. The soft glow of the fire seeping through his home's windows in the distance really felt homely this time of day. Too bad he didn't have time to go sit by the fire... He had work to do.

Hya turned in the other direction of Nelone and walked to his shack, swinging the door open and letting it slam shut behind him. He grabbed his gloves, shoving them in his pocket, and pulled out several boxes labeled 'electronics' and one labeled 'tools' before pouring their contents out on his desk. With a long sigh, he began rummaging.

SCILLA LYALL
//Nelone, 5:02 PM, 27 Aug 0020

Scilla didn't object to Koa calling the shots. That was what Koa tended to do - talk, and then act as fast as she could. When she was younger, Scilla had hated being told what to do. But she knew Koa could be counted on in situations like this. "See you soon," she said after the door had swung shut. Her dad, who possessed a similar mind, was already bundled up and ready to go.

They power-walked through the cold to the shack, which would take the better part of a half hour. There wasn't much conversation on the way - her dad's eyes scanned for his son or his footprints, and Scilla herself scouted ahead for any sign of Grimm. She felt safer being in that position; her dad often had a bad case of mental tunnel vision. Scilla wasn't as strong, but she was certainly reliable, she thought as she gingerly hopped over the cracks in the highway platform. She opened her rift, however, as soon as she saw some ominously clawed tracks in the barren earth. "Dad, is that... ?"

Caspian's eyes narrowed. "Yes. They go on to the east, so the Grimm shouldn't be close by. But," he said, loading an ice dust crystal into the meteor hammer wrapped around his waist, "keep a weapon out."

Scilla nodded and took out a small but reliable pistol, sleek and silver. She dropped it in her skirt pocket.

They made it to the shack without incident, though Scilla's teeth were still set on edge from the sight of the Grimm tracks. She had no issue fighting - when the time came. If there was any time leading up to it, she always wished Koa and Hya were with her, or anyone, really.

"Made it!" Caspian knocked on the shack's door. "Hya, are you in there? I bet you're working on something grand--" he meant it, Hya's tinkering always impressed him-- "and you'll have even more energy for it after dinner. C'mon, we brought you some soup." He gestured to his daughter, who pulled the bowl from her pocket dimension. The place was room temperature, so the soup still steamed somewhat. "Hya?" Caspian wanted to open the door, but Scilla seemed to be listening for a reply.

COMMUNITY CENTER
//Nelone, 5:14 PM, 27 Aug 0020

The courtyard held a rainbow of warmly-dressed people - a line of motorbikes and other transport towards the fence, food vendors near the fire, small tents for vendors. A familiar hand waved to Koa, distinguished by its chipped and thin green polish. "Koa! Long time no talk," said a tall, lanky woman with a folding spear on her back. This was Llinos, a Huntress who occasionally backed Koa up. "You look like you're in a rush."
