Being Nelone's sole Grimm-scout left Koa with several responsibilities: warning the group of a horde, or a particularly dangerous Ursa; mapping the surrounding area and taking note of any changes; occasionally walking up and down the raised highway structure Nelone was settled on to check for structural concerns. Babysitting, however, was not meant to be one of Koa's responsibilities. Somehow, despite this, she was always the one designated to hunt down Hya when dinner was ready—a meal tradition she hardly ever took part in herself, given the awkwardness between her and Hya's family. She had her concerns that his family might be worried for Hya's safety outside Nelone when he accompanied her on scouting endeavors, though it wasn't a discussion she ever held with them. She just had her suspicions. She felt like she was always walking on fractured glass around those two...
Nevertheless, they still had the gall to send her out to Hya's tinker-shack to remind him, for the millionth time, that dinner was going to get cold. It probably already was cold... For August, Mantle was viciously cold. She could feel the snow in the clouds, smell it through her frozen nostrils; it was waiting to blanket Nelone and make their lives a frozen hell for the twentieth time. Hya claimed he could make it easier on them this year, but she had her doubts. After all, he said that last year too. Oh, she wasn't doubting his abilities—she saw his scrawled notepad describing how his proposed contraption would function. He probably had the know-how and the materials to put it all together before the first snowfall, but that's the only part she doubted: that he'd do it. She sighed in frustration as she wrapped her thin arms tightly around her stomach to contain her body heat. She was within view of Hya's shack now, but she couldn't hear the tell-tale sound of metal-on-metal or a sizzling flame. At least that meant she wouldn't be interrupting anything.
Koa knocked—no, pounded—on Hya's door, shacking the make-shift shack in its entirety. Nothing. After waiting a few moments she knocked again, this time a little gentler. Again, nothing. Odd. Rather than waste her time in the cold with another knock, she pulled the door open an inch and peeked inside without a sound. His chair was empty, his desk clean. He must not have been in there all day... But she didn't remember seeing him around Nelone either.
In a slight panic, Koa opened the door and stepped inside, letting it slam behind her—a result of harsh Autumn winds. She opened his desk drawer slowly, finding both Hya's black vest and green hazard gloves tucked away and folded neatly. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw his beloved shotgun propped up against the wall in the same exact position she'd saw him leave it last night.
She was out the door in an instant, sprinting back to Nelone without so much as a thought to the blistering cold she felt on her face and hands. She hopped over a sizable crack in the highway platform, landing clumsily due to her panicked speed. She knew Hya had woken up early this morning, she'd heard so much from his family, but they'd all assumed he went to his shack as-per-usual. It appeared that wasn't the case.
Koa flew through the front door to the Lyall house—the second largest building in Nelone behind the community hall, and also the only heated building aside from the community hall. Luckily, the dining room was directly through the front door.
"When was the last time you two saw Hya?" She frantically asked, before taking a seat and stuffing a spoonful of some kind of soup into her mouth (undoubtedly meant for Hya), "His shack is empty, untouched. Did he mention anything this morning? Did you see him at all, or hear him?"

Hya shouted a curse and pounded his forehead into his latest contraption, releasing an array of sparks. He hated electronics with an infinite passion. He woke up bright and early to prepare a surprise for his family, and Nelone as a whole, but it was taking longer than expected. A lot longer. Nearly twelve hours longer.
He was situated at the base of the highway's nearest support to Nelone, inside a small industrial crawlspace with wiring galore. What should've have been his dream-come-true had become his worst nightmare. A store of power directly under their feet, connected to lighting and heating suitable for all of Nelone? Amazing! Perfect! If only he hadn't been the victim of an Ursa attack the first time he stopped to wonder just what was inside that crawlspace. The Ursa nearly knocked the whole support pillar down, giving Nelone a good shake about fifty feet above. This happened two weeks ago, and he'd only returned last night to survey the damage. That was when he found this God-sent gift. A miracle.
A miracle that had him pulling his hair out.
He could hardly contain his excitement last night when he got home, so he ruined the surprise for his sister, Scilla, because, if nothing else, he knew she was capable of keeping a secret. Especially when he made her pinky-promise to keep it a secret until his surprise was ready.
At the very least, he was nearly finished... One circuit was causing issues, but he had a spare that would function well enough back in his shack. Reluctantly, he pushed himself free of the crawlspace and began the very anxiety-inducing, very cold fifty-foot climb to the top of the highway they called home.
