Once, it was heaven.

Now it's hell.

Artemisia, the Jewel of the Pacific, the place where anyone could be anything they wanted to be. Run efficiently by computer systems and large megacorporations,it was meant to be a place where dreams came true. A utopia where everyone was catered to.

Then, tragedy struck. A few weeks after the release of the Pandora System, the central system for the Pandora System corrupted. Something went wrong in the server, and sent out a signal to everyone with an implant. Within seconds, people with the Pandora System implanted became animalistic, violent. They started attacking those who didn't implant the device, and everything fell apart. The city government lost control, and the city fell into darkness.

It's been 3 days since then. The survivors are scrambling to live in what's left of the city. Evacuation calls have been made out to the rest of the world, but no one is coming. We're stranded, we're alone, we're crying for help.

We are dying.

I do want division of labor with these. These are just meant to make character Division of Labor easier and to give some basic starting equipment and skills to characters.

Everyone carries some device with maps of the city, your identification, and health information. It's usually worn around the left forearm, though, some are carried like phones. Jobs will also have specialized apps or devices to assist them in their work.

Jobs

In Artemisia, jobs are given according to ability. People are assigned to which job they work best in. Some of these have subdivisions

Administration
Those under Administration work as a bureaucrat for the city or one of the corporations. You maintain day to day operations for the city and its citizens.

Supplies
Administrators get:

Skills
Bureaucrat Admins get Public Identification. Your time spent filing reports and staring at computer spreadsheets has honed your skills in identification. You can easily identify if someone has taken The Pandora System if it is not clear.

Technicians can use System Maintenance. Your time spent working on the computer systems and servers that keep Pandora running has rubbed off on you. You can quickly repair a broken computer system, or hack into locked ones, however that takes a bit of time.

Medical
Those under medical work as doctors, nurses, or EMTs. They provide 24 hour medical care for those in the city.

Medical Staff get:

3x MediGel (able to close wounds quickly and with minimal pain)

Skill

Medical Staff can Stabilize injured persons, healing their wounds quicker with available medical technology.

Security
Those under security work as police and bodyguards within Artemisia.

Skill
Security Officers get Nonlethal Takedown. You train in martial arts to be able to take down a single target nonlethally and quickly with your hands and arms and minimal damage to you or the target.

Engineering
Those under engineering maintain critical systems in Artemisia to keep the city running efficiently. This branch also covers fire crews who respond to emergencies.

Supplies
Engineers get:
1x toolkit
1x PDA for interfacing with systems around the city
1x Engineering Keycard
1x Medkit

Firemen replace the Toolkit with a Fire Axe​

Skill
Maintenance Engineers get Technical Repair allowing them to fix a broken device. The device then may be used normally. .

Firemen get Breaking and Entering, allowing them to override a door code for an ID card that they do not have up to three times per 24 hours. Unused codes do not stack.

Celebrity
Those that excel at a certain skill or were recruited by an Artemisia Talent Member. These celebrities frequently appear in corporate propaganda advertising and are often well known socialites. They have connections to the higherups within Artemisia and people know them well.

Groups of of teens and young adults known as Escapists have recently started filming themselves performing dangerous stunts such as using parkour across buildings, sliding into vents, and leaping on and off Maglev trains.

Skills:

Celebrities, being socialites and active community members, have either a Calming Presence which allows them to take control in a chaotic situation when around other people. They also might have Friends in High Places, people that have access to places they might not be able to go and access to resources they might not normally be able to use without these friends.

Escapists get Parkour, which allows them to perform feats of agility inaccessible to most. They're trained by themselves or others, and are usually small and light enough to also climb into vents and places where others can't reach.​

The languages of the city are Chinese, Japanese, and English, just due to its location in the Pacific and prominent backers being from China, Japan, and the United States​

All districts each have a main street with various other side streets, arranged like the spokes of a wheel.

When she was 18 and Escapists had recently become more popular in the media and young adult culture, Kali began to publicize her abilities, wearing dark clothes, a hood, and a modified ski mask. This attire earned her the title of 'Bandit', which she wears with pride, often using it in place of her real name even when her identity was revealed.

Dr Howard is rude, short-tempered, and altogether rough around the edges. What he lacks in bedside manner he more than makes up for with his sharp wit and vast intelligence. He will never sugar-coat bad news, but while some see this is a fault, he believes his honesty to be reflective of the harsh realities of the world, and time spent protecting ones feelings could be better spent finding a solution. Despite all of this, he actually cares deeply for those in need and possesses a strong moral compass which rarely allows him to stray from doing what is right, much to his own chagrin. When it comes to dealing with the demons of his own past, he prefers a certain alcoholic self-medication.



Familial Background:


Born and raised in rural Kentucky, Henry knew he had two options- Earn a scholarship to a prestigious university, or rot in the fields with the last 4 generations of Howards. He chose the former, burying himself in books from dusk to dawn, but it wasn't enough. The scholarships weren't enough, and his parents weren't interested in finding another solution. When Henry learned of a 3rd option, medical school via the US Army, he jumped at the opportunity.

It seemed like everything would work out for him- he graduated easily, married a girl he had fallen in love with, and all he had to do was serve four years as a surgeon on a military base. His plans went awry when a "military conflict" began, and Dr. Howard was shipped overseas, leaving his wife and newborn child behind. Years passed before he could return, and when he did he found his wife with another man. Released from active duty, that's when Dr. Howard made his way to Artemisia- as far away from his past life as he could go.

Rather than pursuing the traditional avenues of higher education and taking up some manner of well-paid research post or career she chose to drop out in the final year of her PhD to travel and explore, to experience life on her own terms rather than through the lens of familial expectations. Her mother has never fully forgiven her, yet though her father remains a little disappointed he was still able to pull some strings to land her a position within Artemisia's engineering team.

Observed Strengths:
  • Calm Under Fire: Years of travel, including a stint with a charity constructing refugee defences and shelters within a warzone, have hardened Jian somewhat to the dangers of life. She's able to focus and get her job done, even when the shit's hitting the fan.
  • True Scientist: Jian grew up around the knowledge and wisdom of one of the fastest developing nations of the world, and had access to one of the finest academies of science on the planet. She's an extremely well-educated engineer, and her academic knowledge has been honed by her own personal travels and experiences along the way.
  • World-wise: The naive young engineering student who abandoned the Chinese Academy of Sciences is long gone. The modern Jian is a woman who knows how to survive and get by, even if it means picking a few locks or breaking a few rules here and there. It's for the greater good, at the end of the day.

Observed Weaknesses:
  • Insensitive: Whilst not deliberately mean, Jian is a practical woman who has a hard time understanding those of a more sensitive disposition. She quickly loses patience with such people and this, combined with her rather barbed sense of humour, can often make her come across as harsh.
  • Stubborn: Jian knows how to solve the problem. Your proposal is dumb. Do you (almost) have a PhD in Engineering and Nanotechnology? No? Then shut up.
  • Catastrophe Thinking: When panic takes hold, Jian is prone to doom-saying and thinking up every possible avenue in which a plan may go wrong. Then vocalising said possibilities. Loudly.

Psychological Profile/Background: Thrill-seeker, adrenaline junky, thief, art collector, hobbyist, monkey, all things one might call Max. Max prefers most call him Rooster. Don't call him Max, and certainly not Maxwell. He earned the nickname Rooster out of a job he did for a street rat named Mouse, he might share that story if you ask nicely. Rooster's dad is rich, busy, buys him whatever he wants, and pretty much leaves him alone. A dream most would call it, absolute freedom and money. So why did Rooster turn to a life of petty crime at the age of 13? Boredom. He didn't get into too much trouble, sticking mostly to trafficking in his younger years.

As Rooster grew older and filled out his frame it was soon obvious he wouldn't be getting much bigger than he was. Instead, he put on lean muscle and his hand-eye coordination improved. Rooster's newfound strength and dexterity aided him in getting into hard to reach places that most could not. It seemed Rooster was destined to be a cat burglar, something that hadn't shocked him much as he'd been skimming off the top of his packages when he could for years.

Oddly enough Rooster found that he enjoyed stealing things, almost like a challenge. The trickier the quandary the more of a rush it was for him. It was almost like a drug to Rooster when he'd make off with something most would call 'priceless'. Rooster didn't much care for the objects themselves, although he slowly grew a few choice collections of things he found interesting or pretty.

On Roosters 17th birthday he had a bit of a falling out with his father after Adams was forced to bail his son out of jail for the third time in a row. Intent on putting a stop to it he vowed to lock his son away until he was 18. So Rooster disappeared without any trace. It wasn't until Rooster got wind of a bit of information referencing Artemisia and the revelation that his father had some slight (read: negligible) hand in it coming about and would be guaranteed a spot. Little Maxwell returned home with smiles and regret as he reconciled with his father. The rest is history.

Familial Background: Adams Iverson, top-level business exec. May have bailed his son out of trouble in the past, otherwise unimportant. Adoptive father, biological parents are unknown/irrelevant.

Observed Strengths:
Parkour - Allows Rooster to perform feats of agility inaccessible to most.
Disguise - In the chase, something as simple as a blue hat or a red scarf can be an important factor in keeping sight of your query. Swap out a few items at the right moment and one could easily become an entirely different person out for a Sunday stroll, merely minding their own business.
Squirrely - Rooster is extremely flexible and reactive, twisting and squirming out of the clutches of all but the most determined foes.
Sprinter - Parkour isn't Rooster's only field of expertise, don't let him find an open ground or you're just as likely to come up spitting dust.
Excellent with a baton - The extra reach allows Rooster's reflexes to be at their most effective, creating an almost impenetrable defense against an untrained opponent.

Observed Weaknesses:
Weak CQC (excluding baton) - Without a baton giving him a bit of extra reach Rooster tends to fail in combat and will generally choose to flee.
Squirrely - Loyalty isn't exactly Rooster's strong suit. He won't backstab anyone out of malice, but if he thinks it's time to cut his losses and run you won't realize he's gone until he's long gone.
Cowardly - Rooster isn't spineless but he'll always try to talk his way out of a situation or keep his head down until he can find a way to escape. Conflict and direct confrontation aren't his forte.
Reckless/Impulsive - Rooster isn't one to think through the consequences of his actions, preferring to act first and question later. It's not infrequent for him to find himself in a heap of trouble related to some foolish stunt he pulled.
Kleptomaniac - Rooster can't keep his hands to himself, shiny trinkets and objects of value both sentimental and monetary. Nothing is safe in Rooster's presence.

In the end, her mother's death allowed her influence to win out, and Sintra left to see the world. She leveraged her exposure to the various sights and cultures into the written word, and became, much to her father's concern, a poet.

Observed Strengths:
  • Un-Person: Years of playing the wallflower have made Sintra adept at making herself small. She is as talented as an untrained person can be at traversing between the shadows of others, with light step and inscrutable visage.
  • Gift of the Gab: Sintra is not multi-lingual, but can get by almost conversationally by reading tone, deciphering body language and picking up patterns. Even near-broken by high-pressure, Sintra is unerringly precise in her diction.
  • Low-Maintenance: Hell is not unkind to weak stomachs, or empty stomachs. Thankfully, the latter is (at least for a time) not Sintra's biggest issue. She has a plant's mental fortitude, and is able to suppress the effects of hunger, thirst and exhaustion on her psyche better than others.

Observed Weaknesses:
  • Hero Complex: All things, even altruism, are harmful in excess. Sintra is prone to overcommitting in her support of other people or causes. Her sense of self-preservation is compromised by the perpetual guilt of not having done "enough".
  • Fuck You Say?: Sintra takes challenges and criticisms in a group setting personally, and is prideful enough to die on unworthy hills. She has enough self-awareness of this fact -- and yet not enough resolve to face it -- that she often chooses to refrain from inputting at all.
  • Less Than Handy: Sintra is good with a pen, but not so much with anything else. She struggles with rudimentary practical tasks, and endeavors such as lockpicking or anything resembling modern-age technoliteracy are beyond her.
