THE CULTURE OF THE GREY
THE SUPERNATURAL & THE OCCULT
You look into the Grey. You expect to see a spectrum of morality, white to black, good to evil. Yet, what faces you is a multitude of grays. You balk at this. No one is truly good or evil? Yet, is that true in your day-to-day? Even in the mundane world there aren't truly benevolent and malevolent beings. The same could be said for the Grey. There are those that mean well, but they are a pale fraction above those that are vicious and cruel. The supernatural community doesn't breed species capable of inhabiting far ends of the spectrum. No, they exist within the same realm as humans do.
You think one race might be better than the other given what they tell you, well you would be wrong. They view themselves as better, while other races view that differently. This can be said throughout the entire gamete of society. No one is truly better than the other. They all exist in the same soup, some just do a smidge better than others. For instance, the Occult wishes humans well. Yet, they will not sacrifice their own being for the sake of them. The Criminals wish their own design created, but won't totally destroy the fabric of the Grey to do so. And the Sherriff's office, well they mean well, but they are not everyone and everywhere. There are things that will slid gladdening-ly under the cracks.
The pure darkness of the Grey comes from those that want to destroy it. Most of the maleficent members can be viewed as nere-do-wells at worst. They mean well, but do the worst. Yet, the true villains exist within those that want to destroy the in-between. They want to make themselves real and known to the humans. They want to destroy the precious fabric that keeps the sanity of the world intact. They're the adversary of the Sherriff's office, and the Occult. Maybe even some Crime Syndicates want to take them down. They try to disrupt the equality of everything.
Classism is the foundation of the Grey. There are high races and low races. Each belong in their place and have existed in their place since… well… their existence. Such thoughts were created by their ancestors and held onto like an old debutant clutching pearls. These classes are so rigid that no one can casually ascend or descend through them. No. You were born into one and you will stay into one until you die. And if you care to move either direction—you will die. The only exception lies in the Sheriff's office, as Sheriff Blacklaw is a low-class over a series of other supernatural that range from low to high class. Most disregard this as accident. "He means well," they say, "and he gets the job done. But we'll never invite him to our dinner parties."
The worst among the classes are the vampires. Immortal, bloodsucking, beautiful assholes. They've risen above the rest of the supernatural as an unbeatable and irrefutable in beauty. They know their place, and yet they exploit it whenever they can. Literally every other species hates them due to this. It doesn't matter if you're also a species based on beauty, i.e. elves. Or power, i.e. demons. The vampires have both of that in spades and love to wade in front of you like some majestic beast. They truly are the worst.

THE SUPERNATURAL & THE OCCULT
♡ THE WATCHERS - The human men and women who have been kissed by death and miraculously survived the ordeal. Normal people, who shortly after their experience, begin to see abnormalities in the world around them. The hooded person in the subway's eyes glow, the gorgeous dancer at the bar's canines are inhumanly sharp. The first three days of an awakened Watcher are mentally taxing, stressful and many think they are going insane until they approached by agents of the Occult.
♡ THE OCCULT - The Occult is the title given to the groups of Supernaturals who serve as the closest thing their secret society has to a government. Headed by the richest and oldest witches, warlocks and vampires, they aim to keep the Grey intact and do what's best for supernatural beings as a whole.
That is not to say they are without corruption however, many members of the Occult's leadership live frivolously and use their money and power to bypass the very laws they look to enforce. The Occult's sense of being a well-meaning group in truth, comes from its Sheriff and his deputies, who are perhaps the only individuals aiming to do some good in a world that's entirely bad. They are the ones who investigate heinous crimes committed by their non-human kin and they are the ones who approach the 'Watchers' and educate them on the morally bankrupt world they now live in.
♡ THE SUPERNATURAL - Entails all the races and monsters that Watchers begin to see. These including things like vampires, werewolves, witches and warlocks, etc. Every race has their own set of culture, tradition, and of course - prejudices . Human like Supernaturals also tend to be more successful and well-off, the more prominent beings working as figures in businesses and crime/mob bosses. The more beastly races, while appearing as gruffer and larger humans to the Unawakened, usually function as laborers and criminals. There is a clear divide between the social classes and it directly affects how the races interact with one another.
With that said not all Supernatural beings live within those archetypes, as most are free to do whatever they want with their lives. They can be strippers, butchers, whatever job that humans can do in NYC, so can the Supernaturals. It is extremely difficult however to transcend the social class your race is in. Very few are involved with human politics and/or law enforcement however.

WITCHCRAFT AND MAGIC
♡ HOW MAGIC IS CAST - Magic will manifest through various incantations, rituals and the combination of odd ingredients. Direct evocation is uncommon and is considered dangerous as magical power without restriction is capable of mass destruction. There are hundreds of spellbooks to be studied but the more capable Witches and Warlocks have a set of spells they've memorized by heart and use often. The older magic user, the more spells they know and the stronger they become.
♡ WHO ARE CAPABLE OF MAGIC - Witches and Warlocks are the strongest of magical users. Their inhuman age and abilities all come from one direct descendant, though the specifics of this magical being have been lost to time. Naturally magical beings such as Faeries are capable of spells as well though their powers are more or less limited to nature and its restrictions.
♡ HOW MAGIC IS APPLIED - Each Witch/Warlock has their own separate set of spells they've memorized by heart and so the application of magic is something that is incredibly versatile. Some magic users might be more inclined to enchanting items with special properties while another might be well versed in creating illusions. An example of a Witch who uses her particular magical skillset effectively is Victoria Rider -- a deputy of Sheriff Blacklaw. The spells she's chosen to master revolve around transportation and tracking so she uses them to aid the Sheriff in capturing criminals.

PEOPLE, GROUPS AND FAMILIES OF IMPORTANCE
♡ THE OCCULT COUNCIL - The eldest, richest and supposedly wisest Supernaturals in the community -- they formed the faction ''The Occult" and brought a sense of law and order in their hidden society of monsters. Their ultimate goal is to maintain the Grey and let humanity live on without knowing better. While they may act like they are on the moral high ground, there are plenty of rumors that the group (mainly composed of vampires, witches and warlocks) bypass their own laws and take part in the very human-involved vices they aim to extinguish.
♡ THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE - The law enforcement force created by the Occult. The members of the Sheriff's Office are directly responsible for protecting those who cannot protect themselves and dealing with anyone who might oppose the Occult's agenda for balance in the supernatural society. They are some of the more genuine and wholesome Supernaturals, though they are far from perfect. The previous Sheriff passed on his position to a werewolf and it was a complete and utter scandal. The current Sheriff still has to deal with plenty of Supernaturals who assume they are now above the law since they are above it's enforcer in class.
♡ THE ROSEWELL FAMILY - A clan of vampires who on the outside simply appear to be an immensely successful business family. Those who know better are aware that the Rosewell fortune comes from their ties to NYC's underground crime scene. Their elegant, chic and ultimately extravagant lifestyle is funded by the mundane and non-human prostitution rings they run. Morally bankrupt, they are cutthroat political masterminds and the arch-nemesis of the Ambrose Clan.
♡ THE AMBROSE FAMILY - Another extremely well off family of vampires, the Ambrose's are inclusive and focus on their family above all else. They own various small businesses across the city as well as plenty of popular casinos. Like the Rosewells, their money mostly comes from illegal sources -- mainly extortion. Fiercely loyal to one another, they have conflicted with the Rosewell family for centuries.
♡ THE CARTEL - Unlike the two aforementioned crime syndicates, the Cartel is not family based. Lead and mainly composed of demons, the Cartel holds complete monopoly on the underground's drug scene. They manufacture, distribute, and profit off of selling drugs to the mundane and non-human alike. Their most recent creation and the latest rage in the underground, is a drug made from demon blood that is brought into the system through a syringe. They are the current targets of the Sheriff's office because of this drug.

LOCATIONS
NEW HAVEN - A decently sized neighborhood where most of the population consists of supernaturals who do not wish harm to humans. This is where the Occult resides along with every supernatural who has willingly subjected to their laws. The neighborhood is divided by social classes just like their society is. The higher class non-humans live closer to the center in decent brownstones/homes while the lower class are scattered around the outskirts in run down apartment complexes/group homes.
In the actual center of the neighborhood is New Haven Apartments where the Watchers are made to live alongside the more peaceful non-human races in New Haven. The top floor of New Haven is where the Occult Council holds their meetings. Across from these apartments is the Sheriff's Office and where Abraham and his deputies work day and night to protect their citizens.
REDLIGHT - Redlight is the aptly named nightlife district where a decent amount of the population consists of supernatural beings. This is where most of the supernaturals who hold disdain for humanity remain. It is far from a hospitable area however, with graffiti and grime coating this area of New York City and is the main problem area of the Occult's Sheriff Office.
Strip clubs, bars, casinos and every other vice indulgent businesses are found here. The Ambroses and The Rosewell families' supernatural enforcers discreetly fight over influence in the shadows of Redlight. Crimes of all degrees are rampant and humans and non-humans alike are caught in the current.
Most Supernaturals here live in poverish conditions while the two major vampire bloodlines waging war live in private mansions far from turbulent and morally bankrupt district. While the neighborhood is a violent area humanity remains relatively oblivious to the majority of the horrors that are committed in Redlight. Rumor has it that local law enforcement/government has been paid by the families to turn the other way and that's why it has become the cesspool that it is.
