The following questions are posed in order to help determine the upper and lower bounds of what might be considered a holiday within the confines of this contest.
- Does the holiday have to be time-bound, either to a calendar, seasons, or astrological phenomena?
- Alternatives could include traditions built around patterned or non-patterned but rare occurrences and/or accomplishments. (reincarnation of Dalai Lama, herd migrations, pilgrimages)
- Does the holiday have to be celebrated simultaneously by the whole of society?
- Alternatives could include traditions held by the society as a whole, but performed at different times of year by different family units, or only by certain age-groups. (birthdays, coming-of-age ceremonies, Mother's Day)
- Does the holiday have to be cultural?
- Alternatives could include traditions built around government-imposed, recurring events. (
Hunger Games, the Purge, an example that isn't a movie)
- Does the holiday have to be infrequent?
- Alternatives could include traditions built upon weekly days of rest. (Sunday Mass)

Note that "depends how you go about it" or giving some other non-answer is a legitimate response that I will accept with dignity.
