    It's only been a few months since Marlene was killed while trying to find a cure to the infection. The immune child, Ellie, escaped with her protector, leaving a massacre in their wake. Most personnel, including the some of the top scientists left in the country, were killed or left in dire conditions. Our facilities in Salt Lake City are unguarded and at risk, with much of the equipment damaged. Most importantly though is the loss of this potential vaccine, and the setback of all of our work. We lost of all of this, simply due to the actions of one man.

    This cannot be allowed to happen again.

    While we're given up hopes of retrieving the girl, we do have a glimmering ray of hope on our horizon. We've made contact with the other side, and this offers us a great deal of promise, if we can only manage to get there. As a group and family we have to work towards this goal most fervently. We are the last light for humanity.



    This is a closed group roleplay, invitation only. We do have an interest check up and there's one spot left (we are only accepting five players, at least for now). You can head over there to message me if you're interested, but please keep in mind:

    * This is a long term, casual roleplay. Posting won't be rapidfire and the group is kept small so that nobody will be left behind.
    * I expect at least two well written paragraphs per post. I'd prefer more, but don't push yourself. Quality over quantity.
    * I also expect dynamic characters. You might need to play side characters. I am only the GM in organizational purposes; I won't play all the characters and make all the story.

    Other than that, there are no particular rules. Just work as a group and have fun :)


    These will be pretty basic but feel free to add whatever information you'd like. You can also withhold information that isn't astericked. Your most basic skeleton has 5 fields in it.

    Keep in mind that everyone so far is a Firefly member. You can give your character rank (the leader is spoken for, but scientist, soldier, etc. are options. Will include some stuff about this in lore) and they don't have to love being a Firefly, but everyone is one. You can make a character outside of the Fireflies after things get going, but this is to help keep everyone together.

    Outside of being in the Fireflies, your character can be whoever you want. Parent, teenager, older person, scientist, ex-military, ex-FEDRA, spy for FEDRA, whichever. You can also have multiple characters.

    This is actually pretty straightforward. Just list some things your character has on them (a knife, a water bottle, dogtags, anything you think is notable). This is a survival roleplay, so keeping track of who has what is important (but not vital. Don't worry about it). I don't think many of us will start with a ton of guns and armor without reason, though, so try to keep things reasonable. Once we get out of the Firefly fort, we'll have all the loot to ourselves.​


    Some super simple background information for those new to the series. You can find all of this on the Wiki.


    The infected are those infected by the Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis a fungus that will consume the hosts brain and take control (seen only previously in ants). The host will then go through four different stages of infection: Runner, Stalker, Clicker, and Bloater; each stage is more dangerous than the last. The infection is also spread directly through contact with an Infected or via their corpse - that is, the infectious spores created by the Cordyceps and released from the host's body upon death. Spore development is the last stage in the life cycle of the Infected. This lifeless carcass serves as a breeding ground for the fungus to spread throughout the environment. When an Infected feels it is close to death, it will find dark, moist corners to die in. While this may be the end of the line for the host, the fungus will live on.

    In order for the fungus to infect a host body, the host must first be alive. Dead victims who come into contact with the infection do not undergo transformation.

    The infected are vulnerable to fire.
    A few days after infection.

    Runners are the first and weakest stage of the Infected who have just recently entered their transformation. Since the eyes are first targeted by the fungus, Runners have poor eyesight, but maintain many human instincts. For example, their moans are still human, just like their overall appearance. A way to tell them apart from normal survivors is their glowing red eyes. Their body language is sluggish while they are passive, suggesting they are resisting the fungus's influence. Sometimes they do not attack at all, even when non-infected individuals are right in front of them. These non-aggressive runners will only attack if attacked first or when an object is thrown at or near them, thus losing control. Much like sneezing, the urge to attack after such interactions happens involuntarily and unwillingly by the host. Runners are confirmed to be able to attack in packs flailing their arms trying to trample the survivor.

    A week or two after infection.

    Stalkers have the vision and speed of Runners, with the ferocity of Clickers. The most notable physical traits that define the Stalkers are the distinct croaking noises they make, the beginning of fungal growths on the head and face with only one eye left, the development of pseudo echolocation, and their discretion upon spotting a victim at distance. They will strafe and take cover, eventually closing in on the victim, hence the name "Stalker". Up close, Stalkers are very aggressive and will charge directly at the victim. They have the strength of a fit human.


    Clickers are the third and most distinctly recognized stage of the Infected. They have had prolonged exposure to the fungus, and now possess strength that significantly surpasses the average human. This makes them deadlier, but at the price of being completely blind due to fungal infection overtaking their face. However, Clickers are able to maneuver through areas by utilizing echolocation, which produces noticeable clicking/screeching noises to locate sources of sound.

    Clickers appear less human than Runners and Stalkers, with faces that are completely skewed and scarred by fungus developed from their infected brains. The fungal plates have apparently adapted to keep the host/pathogen alive and able to spread, as a direct shot to the face with a powerful weapon such as a revolver will more often than not just break off a chunk of the mold, leaving the Clicker's brain unharmed but exposing the victim's face and rendering them able to see once again. Clickers are dangerous and much more aggressive than Runners, and like Stalkers; they no longer resist the fungus because their humanity has been completely eliminated.

    They are stronger and more intelligent than the others, and will actually examine their surroundings quite thoroughly for survivors after they are provoked.

    When provoked, a Clicker will immediately enter into a "berserk mode," aggressively flailing its arms and 'roaring'. At this point, if a survivor has been "spotted" by a Clicker, the Clicker will attack head-on and will not flinch when shot, unless the survivor is using high-powered rounds.
    Bloaters are the fourth, final, and most dangerous stage of infection. Bloaters take the longest to develop, making them the rarest of the infected. They are covered in thick fungus that effectively doubles as armor plate. Due to this protective covering, they can withstand multiple hits from weapons such as the Shotgun and Hunting Rifle, and even hatchets and machetes making them extremely tough to eliminate. Bloaters are extremely aggressive, but are rather slow-moving causing them to be more predictable than other infected. Like Clickers, Bloaters 'see' using echolocation to locate and trap a survivor. Because the fungus has completely deformed their face and blinded them, their echolocation is a lot less refined than the Clickers.

    They are extremely strong and can kill with a single hit, so it is best to simply avoid them or stay very far away. Be careful, though, because they also throw sacks of Mycotoxin, a poisonous fungus.


    Even after an infected individual has died, the fungus will continue to grow. It grows in to big fungal plants around the body so much as only a few inches but can cover large areas. By this point, the corpse becomes skeletal and brittle, and the fungus sticks the body to whatever surface it is on. The fungus will begin to emit spores from the body which will infect anyone that breathes them. To combat this, most survivors carry gas masks, although if the person is immune to the infection they have no need for one.
    They are commonly found in places that are underground or wet such as sewers and basements.

    The Fireflies are a revolutionary militia group. Their goal is the return of all branches of US government in the wake of military oppression, although they are also the only known group actively working towards a cure. After the death of Marlene, their leader, the group is suffering heavy losses in their battles against FEDRA, though are hanging on by the barest of slivers.

    The group was founded after the infection broke out and the country went into martial law and set up various quarantine zones. They have stages attacks in several of those zones and have 'liberated' some, although the aftermath never usually went well; the civilians are often just as scared of the Fireflies as they are of FEDRA.

    The group is well trained and armed, though they often in attempts to keep a low profile dress light.
    The Federal Disaster Response Agency (FE.D.R.A.) is one of the last remnants of the pre-outbreak United States government, alongside the Department of Defense and possibly the Center for Disease Control. They took control of the armed forces and declared martial law after the outbreak.
    The Hunters are hostile survivors, sometimes the remnants of quarantine zones (Pittsburgh is one such zone), sometimes groups who have either left zones or have never been in a zone. They tend to shoot and kill any 'trespassers' or visitors to their self proclaimed territory in order to steal gear and food. In some cases, these hunter groups can be cannibals. The groups can be very large or quite small, and can contain women and children.

    I have grouped hunters, bandits, and cannibals from the game into one category for ease of use.


    Zones: There is a zone is just about every major city, though some have been disbanded/destroyed (some by the influence of the Fireflies). Many are militaristic, requiring the youth to enter into training and giving out strict rations. Here you can find a list of known zones (but feel free to make some up).

    Tech: The tech hasn't gotten any better since 2013, although a detector has been made to determine if a person, with a simple scan, has been infected or not. Those who are immune and have been bitten/infected will be detected as being infected.

    Time: It's been 21.5 years since the outbreak.

    Personality: An outspoken, active character, Cait has a presence and demands to be heard, getting involved and taking incentive wherever she can. She is quite the proud individual and has few regrets. Her heart is her leader (second only to her head); while she is quite compassionate and passionate both, she is still rooted in logic like her brother, levelheaded (usually) and controlled.

    Background: Caitlyn and her brother grew up in Dallas, Texas before the outbreak. There, they lived with their mother, father, and grandmother in a two story family home. Their reaction to the outbreak was delayed; by the time they noticed something was wrong, it was already at their doorstep. Infected swarmed the home, which caught fire--80 year old grandma died in the flames on the second floor. The rest of the family managed to escape, making their way to the Houston Quarantine Zone in one piece. There they lived in the quiet with other survivors, and her little sister was conceived and born despite the odds.

    Caitlyn and her brother grew up being trained to be soldiers, though the former was restless and despised the world around her. It was she who convinced her brother to flee with her to the Fireflies after a staged attack on their Zone. The pair brought their youngest sister (their parents had died from illness some time ago) and fled to Corpus Christi where they joined the rebel group. Cait is quite close to the current replacement 'leader' of the Fireflies, even though the two have a love-hate relationship.

    Personality: Erik has a fairly straightforward view on life: it's a dog eat dog world. He's sometimes brash and quick to act and assume, though he does it in defense of his siblings and company. Naturally he is a rather untrusting individual. He feels comfortable in a fight and in the wilderness, planning his next course of action. Deep down, though, he's a friendly dude, good for a couple of beers and a laugh--if you can catch him in the right place at the right time, anyway.

When Caitlyn asked him to join the Fireflies with her--and threatened to go on her own if he refused to come--he succumbed and followed her out of the Zone through his favorite smuggling route at night one day with both his sisters.

    Personality: Scott Baker is cautiously optimistic, having seen enough of the world as it is to want change. Months of wandering around the disheveled, abandoned country have not yet cut into his social skills or faith in humanity. This has gotten him into hot water more than it has spared him the trouble, but he's had enough "exceptions to the rule" to keep his faith solid.

    Background: When the world began to turn, Scott was a newly made used car salesman working the family business outside of Atlanta, Georgia after his grandfather passed away. Once things went south, in the panic that followed the initial outbreaks, Scott's family was killed or lost. For a while after order returned under the government, Scott lived contentedly with his undeclared 'wife' for some time. They had a daughter together, Jane, but the mother died in childbirth. Years later, with his daughter barely past sixteen years old, he has found himself on the road, looking for a "better life", whatever that may mean.

    Personality: Jane is a reserved girl, always has been. Though she's been given a 'normal' life, as close as 'normal' can be, she never took to really opening up around other people. Life on the road, having clearly taken a toll on the girl, has begun to chip away at her remaining sociability and joy. All she hears is her father's promises of a "better life", but all she can see is the one they left behind.

    Personality: Jon tends to overthink things, constantly. He lives by the phrases 'measure twice (or thrice), cut once' and 'if you want something done right, do it yourself'. He's definitely a perfectionist and rather cynical, as he's grown up seeing how awful humanity can be, and has no compunction about killing fellow humans. He can be rather gruff with people, preferring shorter, to-the-point conversation rather than mindless smalltalk, but when he does get chatting about a subject he deems important or interesting he can be pretty talkative. What he wants more than anything is a sense of belonging with a group of like-minded individuals: a replacement family for the one he's lost. It's the reason he joined the Fireflies.

    • Athletic: He has been working out strenuously since he was a teenager, doing strength training whenever possible, body weight or assisted, plus plenty of cardio. He can run for quite some time without getting tired and can handle a weighty pack and heavy gear.
    • Rugged: He has been cut, punched, and shot before, and survived. He embraces pain as a means of tempering his resolve and centering his focus, seeing discomfort as the catalyst to become even harder, tougher, stronger.
    • No Mercy: He generally views people as potential assets or liabilities with little regard to emotional considerations. This leaves him very well-suited to circumstances requiring the application of lethal force without hesitation.
    • Strong Immune System: Even when in tight living quarters with a lot of other people in less than sanitary conditions, Jon rarely gets sick and when he does he gets over it very quickly. Even cuts and infections aren't that big a deal as he quickly gets over them.
    • Hyper-vigilant: Between his own naturally heightened awareness of his surroundings and the tactical training he's undergone as first a City Watch member and then as a Firefly, Cross is rarely caught off guard, keeping tabs on her environment and actors in it at all times.

    • Directionally Challenged: While there are many things he is good at, navigating a city or rural environment is not one of them. If it weren't for his compass and roughly drawn maps and little markers to indicate his passage, he would be prone to getting completely lost even if only wandering a couple blocks from an area he's familiar with.
    • Claustrophobia: Healthy Respect for the Danger of Getting Trapped in Tight Places: After getting stuck several times in tight places as a child, Jon practically hyperventilates at the thought of crawling through tiny tunnels or ducts or anything like that.
    • Acrophobia: Appreciation of Avoiding the Risk of Injury from Falling: Jon grew up in a flat building in a flat city and never dealt with heights at all as a child, not even having to climb a ladder until he was already a teen. As a result, being any higher than 10 feet up (near a ledge of course) can cause nearly crippling paralysis.
    • Alcoholic: One would think that the apocalypse would really limit availability of alcohol but humans are tenacious, and Jon craves the way moonshine makes him feel- so disconnected from the problems of the world. He finds it hard not to drink when alcohol is available and often drinks too much, even to the point of black-out drunk.
    • Prosopagnosia: Jon is considered "face blind" and cannot recognize or differentiate people based on their facial features. He can remember names (but can never 'put a face with a name'), clothes (unless changed, of course), voices (after enough time listening to someone speak), distinguishing features such as scars or disfigurements, even scents, but not faces.


    Jon was born in Corpus Christi originally, in 2001- a month before the Twin Towers fell. Nine years later his parents moved to Oklahoma City for his dad's job and he and his brother went with them, spending the next three years being miserable, finding it hard to make friends in a new city. And then all those mundane problems simply stopped mattering, as modern life broke apart with the outbreak of a horrendous new affliction. Jon's mother had been out shopping when crazed infected individuals stampeded through the town and she'd fallen victim to their bites immediately. His father took him and his brother to the safety of what later became known as the Greater Oklahoma City Quarantine Zone and they had the hard task of assisting the National Guard unit with securing a sector of the city, scouring the buildings and clearing the streets of infected while barricades were erected. It was then that Jon put his two years of shooting practice to use, wielding one of his dad's pistols and although terrified he accompanied his father and two other men, shooting his first raging fungus victim in a strip mall as it leaped over a counter to attack his dad.

    Those were good times. Tough... very difficult times of course with plenty of manual labor required to eek out a new life in the urban wasteland of Oklahoma City. They had to learn how to garden in the limited amount of space they had, growing vegetables on fire escapes and balconies and rooftops, collecting water from gutters and straining it out, boiling it for drinking water. It was almost like starting from scratch, but Jon actually came to enjoy it as he got to spend a lot of time with his dad and brother growing up, and though he missed his mother fiercely he made a few new friends who snuck out of the Zone with him to scavenge in the city outside. That stopped when- at 18- he was considered old enough to join the City Watch and so signed up for the duty. The increase in rations allotment was nice as was the excitement in guard duty, which was not as dull as one might think, but he never got to use the heavy weaponry that the military had, nor the protection- just a pistol and a club he'd fashioned, against increasingly weird and dangerous infected creatures.

    Things seemed to change quickly, and yet the years went by slowly at the same time. He dated a couple girls but those brief relationships didn't go well. He worked with his brother to repair a car they found in a collapsed garage, converting it into a stripped-down racing buggy. They even began setting up a race track through the streets but they never finished it. In 2030, the Quarantine Zone fell. It wasn't victim to a raid from the outside, but rather was sabotaged from within. From what Jon could figure out after the fact, FEDRA agents were getting increasingly frustrated with how independent the citizens of the GOC Zone were, and the devised a false flag attack to scare the people into a state of increased complacency. Only, it went horribly wrong. What was supposed to be a frightening but quickly contained outbreak of CBI blamed on smugglers and used to justify harsher policies, became a full-blown pandemic- and then a catastrophe. The Quarantine Zone became a mass grave, subject to a sort of violence they hadn't seen in years. Jon's dad and brother died, and he only just managed to escape after several days trying to take back the Zone.

    Skipping forward four years, Jon had made it back to Corpus Christi, his hometown. He'd lead a group of other GOC Zone survivors there after discussing their options. They'd had a couple run-ins with the military, an overzealous platoon that had fired on them simply for being civilians in their AO, and although they lost several people they managed to steal a pair of humvees to make the 600 mile journey a bit easier. In the process they learned the truth of their Zone's downfall, and in their outrage they almost unanimously came to the decision to join a group of revolutionary fighters known to oppose the FEDRA and their feudal, militaristic control system. Jon joined up to serve as a scout, sentry, sniper, smuggler, whatever role needed filling.

    This would be a good time to start working through potential relationships. This can be as slight as "so and so knows so and so", or you can go as far as you'd like with it. But the Fireflies being a closed rebel group, people would know each other.

  11. Hmm, I've actually never had to come up with pre-existing character relationships but there's always a first time for everything! So with that in mind... uh... how does that work?

    Rainjay, I imagine Jon and the Wright siblings would all be familiar with each other. I'm not sure how well he'd get along with Caitlyn as he tends to find loud, brash individuals more trouble than their worth, but seems he'd have a healthy respect for Erik that would likely develop into a friendship of sorts over time and cooperation.

    Kraken, are your characters with the Fireflies already? Their backgrounds seem to imply that they're still traveling and will be encountered later.

    There does need to be some kind of background though, at least from the point of joining the Fireflies, right?
  12. I would rather there be some note on how the character joined the 'flies, yes, but its not totally necessary.

    You're on the right track! It's just a matter of finding which characters you think yours would have hit it off with and working with the player to imagine how far that relationship goes.

    I agree; Cait and Erik would likely know Jon, particularly since Cait is the type of know everybody (and make it her business to know everybody!) and Erik I imagine would have likely worked with Jon before. "healthy respect for Erik that would likely develop into a friendship of sorts over time and cooperation" pretty much sums up how I view them.

    Also wasn't 100% sure about that myself.

    • A knife strapped to her right leg hidden in her boots, as well as another knife attached to the back of her belt, also hidden by her coat.
    • A gas mask for when traversing through areas with spores.
    • Her journal with a log of all her travels.

    • Realistic - "Hope? Are you serious? Hope is a joke. There's only the here and now - get your head out of the clouds and get with the program."
    • Vivacious - "Oh come on! This is fun, right?! Right?! You only know you're alive when you're getting shot at by hunters, so just go with the flow!"
    • Aggressive - "No - we made a deal. 100 up front, 200 when we make it. Either pay up or I swear no one will ever find your body."
    • Loyal - "Y'know, that's a very tempting offer, I can't lie. But, sadly, someone else has already paid for my services, and I'm not the type to go back on my word, no matter how much money you offer me."
    • Blunt - "Well, you got shot in the stomach. You're bleeding out and a few pieces of you are... Err... Kind of on display, so I'm pretty sure you're going to be dying soon. OH! You didn't want me to tell you that? Sorry, man."
    • Erratic - "Yes, I know you paid me to keep you safe. Yes, I know I kicked you out of a window. I understand you're angry, but if you don't shut up I'll break your jaw."
    • Hedonistic - "What do you mean, why am I charging so much? I'm sorry, but alcohol isn't cheap and some good, dirty fun sure as hell isn't either."
    • Melancholic - "I remember I wanted to be a doctor, like my aunt... Now look at me. Just killed someone again... Hah."
    • Resourceful: Being the daughter of a former soldier, Alysson knows how to survive on her own. From first aid to hunting, she knows how to keep herself, and others, alive.
    • Eagle Eye'd: There are few things Alysson won't notice. She knows how to read people and their mannerisms - from the slight twitch of an eye that signals aggravation to the slight posture shifting of discomfort. This also extends to the land - from tracking animals and people to locating and identifying landmarks.
    • Hand-To-Hand Combat Training: The lessons she learned from her father also extends to fighting. While decent with a gun, she's always found it easier to address her problems with her hands. While not ideal when dealing with the infected, let her get close enough to a hunter and she'll ruin their day.
    • Overconfident: She doesn't always put much thought into the things she does. She's cautious, yes, but if she thinks she can grab something and outrun a group of clickers, she's stupid enough to do so. In her mind, you either do or you die.
    • Gullible: She's not someone that's easily trusting, but she's the type to believe anything you tell her. Did you say you killed five clickers with your bare hands? She may be a bit weary of the validity of the statement, but give her a few more details and she'll believe you.
    • Mediocre Aim: Unlike her combat skills, her aim is, according to her, "all kinds of fucked up". If her target isn't within 8~ feet of her, it's unlikely she'll make the shot. And when it comes to rifles and shotguns, the ensuing recoil ruins her already terrible aim.

    • "My name is Alysson Zaynesworth. I was born into a fucking shitshow. I remember, when I as five, my brother told me I was born in a sewer. A fucking sewer. Apparently the group my family was with had someone who was hiding their infection and everything went to shit, so my parents hid in a sewer. Where I was born. Fuck my life, y'know? Anyway, we survived... Moving from shithole to shithole, doing our best to stay alive. It worked. Eventually we found ourselves in Louisiana, where my mother was born. It was a small town, Lake Charles. Apparently it wasn't always small, but shit happens, y'know? Anyway, we found a place there - safe zone. But... I had grown up moving. It was hard for me to just... Stay there. I couldn't do it. Didn't help I learned about the Fireflies. After 2 whole days of arguing I decided that I was gonna leave. Find the Fireflies. Do something to try and change the world. And now, here I am, adding another journal entry. I just made it to Corpus Christie... Here's hoping I can find them."

  16. A few quick notes.

    The outbreak was just about 21 years ago; if Alysson is 23, then she would have been born before the outbreak, not after.

    Red eyes I'll allow--the Infected being kind of science fiction themselves. But tattoos would probably be hard to come by in the apocalypse. Equipment would be hard to come by and hard to sterilize. I imagine it would be pricey and risky. So long as you account for that--what she would have had to pay for the work to be done, and the fact that she's probably gotten an infection at least once if she's had that much ink done.

  19. You can keep them if you want, just so long as you remember she's probably encountered infection from the tattoos.

    How interested are you? We've had two others claim interest but never reply/finish CS. Jageroux actually took the final spot but if you're dedicated and the other members agree to let you in, then its okay by me. The problem is that having a big group for traveling is difficult, plus this roleplay is slow-casual.
