Here is the OOC thread where you can post your Detective and Doctor characters respectively. I am looking forward to RPing with both of you.

My role as GM is mainly to facilitate the story, provide information specific to each player character, and control the NPC characters in an unbiased and believable manner. As such I will not have a main character that I control and the NPC characters should only react to your characters based on what they can reasonably know.

For example if the detective decides to shoot a patient in the back randomly they will not somehow know it is coming and dodge the bullet Neo from The Matrix style. Also with very rare exceptions every character in this RP can be killed if you so choose to do so, no plot armor for anyone including your two characters. I shouldn't have to tell you that killing someone or violence in general will not make others trust your character very much and comes with consequences like real life

Is there any particular form of CS you would like to see or do we just wing it and see if it works?

Honestly I don't want to be too strict on that matter. The only thing I ask is that the character you create be stylized towards the time period and that they are reasonable. No Mary-Sue or Gary-Stu characters, no superpowers, body enhancements, etc. What should make your character unique and enjoyable to others is their backstory, personality, and their actions in the story.

Alrighty-oh let's give it a go.

Name: Anna Voigt
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Personality: Anna represents the perfect embodiment of controlled chaos. Her notes, books, files and general organizational skills are barely present and yet somehow she always knows where to find the exact thing she needs. She is a lax and patient sort of woman always inquisitive and always chasing new knowledge. The joy of discovery has not been lost on her and in her field of work she knows that it will surely help others making all her hard work all the more worth the trouble. Should would go to no ends to help her patients and indeed had done so in the past; tracking down a lost relative in hopes of slowing down the effects of dementia on an old woman's mind. More than anything she values ethics in her work often outright rejecting any invasive suggestions or filing them under last resort mark.

History
: It was around the age of 3 that Anna's father was hospitalized for 'circular insanity' or 'manic depressive psychosis'. He was offered an experimental surgery to hopefully help his condition which failed dramatically leaving him a mild barely cognitive mess of a human being. Anna can barely remember him from before; And as her mother often said "All the better that she don't.". Despite that, seeing someone supposedly important to her in such a sorry state sparked a fire of curiosity in her that grew until the year she was finally able to attend the University of Vienna and learn in truth about psychology, psychotherapy and all the modern treatments. She had stepped into a newfound branch of science and medicine and perhaps because she was a woman patients had an easier time with therapy. During her studies and few years afterwards she was mentored by one Sigmund Freud, but by the time she branched off from his school of though she regularly exchanged correspondence with other psychologists all over the world. She had even reached out to more controversial figures at the Miskatonic University in hopes of expanding her knowledge even further.

When she was invited to Germany where she could employ exactly what she had been learning all this time she wasted no time taking that opportunity. For the most part her expertise no matter how valid was often disregarded either because she was young and female or because the institution was biased towards experimental treatments, medication and other more invasive methods. She was more than happy to say goodbye to that sort of day to day frustration; Naturally the substantial monetary compensation was equally important in her decision to jump ship.

I understand it may be a bit bare-bones but from what I've understood these are the most important aspects of the character.

P.S. I hate CSS.

I understand and actually that CS is perfect for this. In my opinion characters should be developed in the story rather than completely laid out in a neatly organized form. This little history and a brief interlude of the character's personality is a great entry point for getting to know the basics about the character. I like it :thumbsup2:

Also nice formatting. Got me jealous over here

Haha, thanks for the compliment but I will fully admit to it taking way more time than it rightly should have.

And I agree that most of the character development should happen through the story and plot where they interact with PCs and NPCs rather than in a controlled environment of one's own mind.

Name: Raymond "Ray" Price

Age: 34

Gender: Male

Personality: Raymond, despite what people may think, goes against your stereotypical detective you would read in books or see in movies. He's much like a gentle giant, with a kind heart always seeing the good in people and willing to give them another chance... or three. Many would refer to him as a pushover, though that isn't quite right. While Raymond has a lot of patience and listens to what his heart tells him, he doesn't let people push him around. In fact, Raymond has a quick tongue and the wits to match it, so more often than not, he'll put you in your place real quick with a few words that fall like acid off his tongue. When it comes to things in relation to his work, Raymond is an observant man and once somethings sparks his curiosity, he'll go out of his way to get an answer. Such things fire his passion for detective work and solving all sorts of oddities. He works hard to get the job done and is always willing to take on a new challenge.

History: When Raymond was just a young lad, around the age of 8, his father went missing in the line of work. He was an agent for the FBI and a damn good one at that. Raymond was very close to this father, and new of details concerning his most recent case which put him on edge when everyone claimed his father to be dead. Knowing said details, Raymond refused to believe it and took up the responsibility as his own to find his father. With this in mind, Raymond studied anything he could get his hands on that had to do with the FBI, his dad, the mission he was on, etc. This obsession stayed with him his whole life, making him pursue being a detective for the FBI, as his father was. Raymond was 25 when he joined the workforce, and 28 when he was fired. Unsure what to do then and with no other defining skills, he became a private investigator.

Upon receiving the letter from whomever, Raymond decided to head out to Germany and see what was going out, seeing as there was no record of the facility or any of its workers other then they were dead. With the help of a friend, he found the location and headed out with his curiosity fueling his interest.

>>> IC Thread <<<

@Snowflake I realized after posting that in my haste to get the IC thread up and the first post done I had committed a cardinal sin. I did not collaborate with you on whether or not your character would be so readily willing to be escorted to Faille Hall by the driver in the post. If you feel that it is something that needs to change I will of course redo the entire post and work with you on editing the post to make it more agreeable to you... If I do something like that again just let me know and we can fix it

@iiSaralaxyii Stand-by for now as I would like the doctor to do their post before we get to your character's arrival. Which we should talk about here as well. I think logically he wouldn't have an official escort as he isnt actually allowed supposed to be allowed in Faille Hall, so he should be driving himself there with the directions he got from his government contact right? I'm open to whatever ideas you can come up with btw

We can talk out posting turns here if need be, however I think with some occasional exceptions it should be logically apparent who needs to post next in a sequence of events.

@Aethelred That would make the most sense, yes. The issue that arises from that is how he would get in and maneuver around the place. Either he could have false identification, such as being an assistant or nurse that allows him access inside, or he would need to sneak in and keep away from all staff if he can. Both are doable, though the first option may be more... beneficial to moving things along.

Yeah, a false ID is not something that is out of the question. He could pose as a government elected inspection agent to gain access to almost everything, until Director Hans can disprove his identity. Something which would require him to take a road trip meaning his absence from the institute...

Sneaking in would be a unique take on the matter and certainly a logical one until Raymond realizes that he cant hide forever if he intends to thoroughly search the place. He is going to have to be able to talk to staff, patients, and gather physical clues as well.

There is also the act of sheer name dropping the man who gave Raymond the directions to get there in the first place though that comes with its own ups and downs.

Theoretically we could also have some trouble with the vehicle that Dr Anna is in leading to the two characters meeting and she could help him get in via taking him on as her own personal assistant. The issue with that is if it would be something that both characters would be likely to do and that you and Snowflake can agree on in OOC

We definitely have some options to go with, though the last one requires talking with @Snowflake first unless you think Raymond just wouldnt go along with a plan like that

OOC I would probably go with that idea in a second, it makes some story writing sense to plant those relationship seeds early on.
Just the thing is, IC it is a very odd situation.

Afaik, Anna only knows that the institute is far away from the city, that she is someone's replacement and that she is being paid a considerable sum. She doesn't necessarily have any reason to suspect everyone she is yet to meet over some American guy that wants in. I guess if she had reason to suspect that something wrong had happened to the past doc then she would consider it for sure. Think of it this way, on one side a branch of government that specifically asked for Anna to be there contrasted against a foreigner that may as well be a conspiracy theory nut.

Idk if she would have any strong reasons to suspect them to that extent that she throws away both hers and her patients safety and brings in a stranger. Like if they happened to talk on the way there and he said he came to investigate she would probably ask the staff to let him in so long as he doesn't disturb any patients. But not go so far as to lie from the first moment.

Yes i suppose Anna would have more reason to be suspicious of a stranger from America than the people who hired her to try non-invasive treatment on psychotic patients. That route doesnt make much logical sense given the circumstances so perhaps @iiSaralaxyii should go with the idea that they posted initially. The fake ID

Alright so I will take the next post and within it I will be including the driver's reaction to Dr Anna, their arrival at the gates of Faille Hall, and introducing Raymond in his journey along the same road Anna just came from. Before I do so however I just wanted to set the stage first.

With Raymond I was thinking that he would arrive after Anna has already been greeted at the gate and welcomed in. So my post will probably be similar to the first one in terms of content related to the detective. Basically scene setting for the drive Raymond is making. So, kinda slow paced right now I know but things will pick up. Wont be replying until much later though

I think the Fake ID also makes sense from the interaction standpoint because the duo would interact that way first and then as Detective Price begins to trust Anna he would probably share his true goal knowing full well that when the Director shows up again he would be thrown out. It makes sense that he would ask someone relatively new for help, someone that's technically as much of an outsider as he is and it also pushes that revelation forward a bit since he knows he is on the clock with his fake ID.

Otherwise it might seem forced as to why they end up working together, especially if he ends up skulking around like a thief or a killer.

I'm glad we came to a decision so quickly. I think the fake ID is a great idea and makes a lot more sense then immediately asking Anna for help. Raymond is trusting and all, but he's always sure to be careful with that trust when it comes to his investigations.

Since Raymond isn't quite in the same area as Dr Anna just yet I dont think it matters which one of you replies next, however I plan to wait until both of you respond to the IC thread before I do another post

As always If you disagree with what I posted or have any suggestions feel free to write that out here in the OOC thread

I've started to include details that are exclusively obtained by your specific characters. Should they remain written out in posts like this or should I PM you with those kinds of details to make it truly unknown to the other character? It would be more inconvenient that way as it would mean you two would be reading my posts and a PM, however it would ensure no one can break character and react to the information that their character shouldn't have

Despite everyone's best efforts there are times when a player wonders if their decision is based on meta-knowledge or not and lines get blurry as to what is influenced by it and what isn't. Even if you're consciously sure that you aren't meta-gaming it there may still be something subconscious driving you.

On the flipside, when it comes to purely cooperative efforts these things are not too problematic because that knowledge is meant to be shared and acted upon even if a certain character is only doing it on 'instinct'. You could akin this to a player figuring out the twist in the video-game story before the character does and then player preparing for it by raising stats accordingly or buying more potions.

It depends on the mood, if the idea is that there are two people working closely together then there's no reason to PM it, but if the mood you are going for is that of incredible tension where it is unclear as to whom you can trust then PM-ing it is the best way to go.
tl;dr: Do you want players to doubt each other as much as the characters or do you want players collaborating on the story by knowing all of its elements.

Also it's Voigt not Volgt. :P

Damn, will edit. Sorry

The keys are uh... yeah they are close on a keyboard... That's my excuse
