The Knights of the Forest (And Then There Was One)

At the edge of the forest Johann got off his horse, being strapped to it would be problematic in an ambush. He grabbed his broadsword and walked into the forest. He noticed he was the only knight who chose not to ride into the forest on his horse. Johann had a terrible feeling about this whole situation since meeting the shapeshifter. Where had she gone? Then his page said "sir, I uhh, found the cat"

Johann walked over to the page on the horse, noticing the small cat curled up on the horse. Hmm, she was going to the village too apparently. He reached out and touched the cat's soft fur and whispered to the page making sure no-one else could hear "keep her safe, she's important."

Johann walked ahead of the page's horse when he suddenly heard a loud screeching. Instantly swords were pulled and ready, pikemen were organized and spears were leveled. "Form up! Backs to the horses!" Johann shouted. The soldiers instantly followed his orders, facing out into the thick forest. Johann stepped back and whispered "we could really use your help, eh?" Much to the confusion of his page.

Shade gave a small mew as the knight touched her. Her head tilted slightly at the mention of her being important. Now why would he think that she thought, sighing softly and setting her head back down on top of her paws.

Shade looked back over to the knight as he walked back over to them. A dark shape rushed by and she hissed, fur raising, before leaping off the horse and running to the forest, shifting as she went. She caught the scent of the creature and finally knew what it was. She finished shifting and shook herself, wings unfurling. The dark shadow swooped down and snatched up two men in its claws, consuming them immediately after

Shade leapt up off the ground, now a pure black griffin, and tackled the other griffin to the ground only a few feet away from the group. The two fought for a few minutes, at one point Shade being pinned down, but she soon ended it. She stood up and shook herself, spraying drops of blood every where. She turned and started back towards the bushes.

Johann watched as a griffin swooped down and quickly ate two men. He stood in shock. Griffins in the wild? There hadn't been a fully grown griffin seen in well over fifty years. He didn't know if he should be excited or terrified. Then suddenly another griffin appeared, and this one was different. It was pure black, matching...the griffin of his family crest? Johann knew instantly who the second griffin was. "Well, I guess that's the help I asked for" he said to himself. "Although, that's a little suspicious.

This shapeshifter had plans for the men in the forest, Johann wasn't sure what they were, or whether he would like them or not, but they had no choice anymore. If griffins were right at the entrance to the forest, then bigger meaner things awaited them further in to the forest.

Johann continued to watch the two griffins fight until finally the pure black one, the one he wanted to win, made the killing strike. The griffin stood and shook the blood off, and then ran off into the bushes. Several men wanted to give chase, but Johann yelled at them to stop. "gather the meat of the dead griffin. It makes good eating if prepared properly." After several of the men collected a few pounds of meat from the griffin they continued their march. From then on Johann kept his sword sheathed, but slightly pushed out, so he could draw it easier. "Hopefully, a griffin will be the worst thing we see" he said, wondering where their shape shifting friend had gone.
