The Island Virus

Blair gasped with shock. "Good lord," she said quietly. "Yeah we do... But what if he's totally crazy and stuff?" she asked softly, "That always happens in movies."

"Good thing this isn't a movie," Luke muttered. He watched the man drive closer and closer, until he was within possible ear-shot. Then Luke shoved the door open (shooting a zombie who looked his way), and waved his arms: flagging the man down.

"Hey! Over here! Help!" Luke shouted. Once he shouted, more zombies looked his way, and he unloaded the gun into them.

"Exactly," she said lightly, "If he's a wack-job, we protagonists are screwed." Blair stepped back as he started shouting, watching as zombies turned to them. Luckily Luke knew how to handle that gun. She hid behind him as the man started driving closer, putting a hand on his shoulder gently.

"HEY! OTHERS!" the man shouted. At this he swerved over to them, flattening more and more of the undead. He pulled up next to them, shouted: "Get in!", then pulled out a shotgun and began to hold off the horde, giving them time to actually get in.

Luke didn't need to be told twice. He jumped into the vehicle, pulling Blair with him. He patted the man's shoulder to tell him they were in the transport, then held himself down as the man (without a word) hit the gas without steering or putting the gun away. 5 feet later he did the responsible thing and turned his attention back to the road.

As she was pulled in, she gripped Luke's sleeve tightly. She glanced at the other man, then hid her face in Luke's shoulder. She didn't want to be so trusting of a stranger, but... He was their only hope at the moment.

"So! Where ya from!?" the man asked, as he plowed the way to an as-yet unknown location. "You sure don't look like you're from this island!"

"You're right were not!" Luke had to shout to be heard over the roar of the engine. "We were caught in a storm off the coast on the way to our summer vacation spot! It killed everyone else, and trashed the ship! We've fought and hid our way here! Thank God you showed up! Didn't know how we'd make it to the port if you hadn't!"

"The port!? What you think you'd find a ship or somethin'!?"

Luke nodded furiously.

"Yes! We had hoped there would be one!"

"Well, you're out of luck there! The last one left 5 days ago! We're waiting for them to come back and get the rest of us!"

Luke tilted his head, showing confusion.

"The rest of you!?"

"Five days ago?" she repeated, leaning forward to look at the man. "How far is mainland from here?" she asked him. Blair was relieved that there were more people on this island than she had thought there'd be. She'd thought it would be just an abandoned island with that single building in the middle. So maybe one of these people knew what was going on?

"Yeah, 5 days! What, didn't you hear me?! And yeah, boy, the rest of us! We got an encampment about 5 clicks from here with about 10 of us still there! Me not included!" After another couple of minutes, the engine died down to a dull growl and they rolled into a small fenced inclosure. As they finished rolling, the gate in front of them swung open to invite them in. As Luke watched, the tree-tops inside the compound exploded with light.

"I heard you," she muttered lightly, sinking lower in the seat. "But you didn't answer my other question, how far is mainland from here? Is five days a long time?" she asked as they rolled into the enclosure. It was a little iffy, but it was their best chance of survival. Plus, she could probably snoop around and maybe find someone that knew something about what had happened.

"New ones?"

"New people on the Island?"

"How did they get here?"

"Poor dears..."

There was a multitude of voices as the other survivers crowded around them. There was one old lady and it looked like there was 2 other teenagers, but other than that there were only middle aged people.
