The Guardian

Ireland? Liam wasn't from Ireland. He'd never even heard of Ireland, but he knew he wasn't Aleya's cousin either so he assumed she was using this as a cover. What did people from Ireland act like? What language did they speak? He would need to make sure to do research on the place as soon as possible if he wanted to look believable. He had only ever met one other person from another country, but he remembered that they spoke slightly differently than others. His master had called it an "accent" and said it was because the man's country spoke a different language. Should he have one as well? For now he would just have to pretend that he spoke very good English.

"Nice to meet you, Liam." said Daniel as he held out his hand for a handshake.

Liam accepted the handshake. "Pleasure to meet you, Dan." he said politely, sounding and acting a bit to formally as he did.

Daniel raised an eyebrow and looked in Aleya's direction, not seeming to fully believe her lies, though he had no way to disprove them. He looked down at his watch then. It was nearly time for class to start.

"Eh, nice meeting you then, but I'm heading over to class. Cya later." said Daniel as he waved and walked off to class.

After Daniel left Liam looked back at Aleya "What do we do now?" he asked her telepathically.

Aleya forced a nervous laugh when Daniel raised an eyebrow her way. He didn't seem to believe her one hundred percent. "He only lived there about a year as an exchange student." She explained as convincing as possible, but Dan still knew her well enough to know something was up.
The first bell of the day rang to summon students to their classes, Daniel disappeared into the crowd after dismissing Aleya and Liam. A breath released from Aleya's lungs. This was going to be harder than she thought.

A voice crept in Aleya's mind that made her jump and catch her heart. Making sure no one was around to hear her, she retaliated with a grunt,"I understand why you use that as communication, but could ya please give me a warning before you do that in public?" She breathed in and out to calm her nerves before speaking again. "We go to the reception desk and register you." She began to walk towards the doors when she remembered he has no way to identify who he is or that he even exists! Her chin fell as defeat set in, and then looked up at him. "You wouldn't happen to be able to... I dunno... create some ID for yourself?"

Liam was surprised when Aleya jumped when he spoke to her with telepathy. He then held his head low when she scolded him for using the ability in public, his large amber eyes looking sadly at her, a few girls peered at him strangely while he did. It appeared that he would have to be more careful when he used that ability. He quickly regained his composure though, a smile put back on his face to please his mistress, and followed her as they walked towards the office.

Aleya suddenly came to a stop in front of him. She turned around, looking quite defeated, and told him then that he needed something called "ID". Liam had no idea what "ID" was supposed to mean. It sounded like it was the initials for something, but what for he did not know, and apparently she needed him to create it. As long as ID was not too large then it would be possible. He was able to summon a crystal sword and shield, as long as the ID's mass was no more than theirs he would be able to alter it into the right shape.

"Do you have ID?" he asked Aleya "If I know what it looks like then I may be able to create some."

How stupid of me. Realizing Aleya asked him for ID without an example was pretty absent minded of her. From her pocket she slipped out a small, laminated card that held information from when she was born to her appearance, and handed it to Liam. "Can you – "There were a couple girls late getting inside the school and thought it best to use the other means of communication for measures of privacy. Can you create something like this?
Without an ID card there was no way he'd be able to register to become a student, and be by Aleya's side.

She took his hand and forced him to walk with her while she searched the side of the school for more privacy. He couldn't very well just snap his magical fingers out in the open like that. She went to the same place where her life changed – forever. The side of the school where there were lots of trees to hide them.
Well, can you?

Liam looked over the small card that Aleya had handed to him. It was made of a strange material, similar to the other objects he had seen in this world. On the card he saw various pieces of information about Aleya, from her birth, to where she lived. He looked over the card and felt its weight as Aleya led him outside the school with her. She took him to the side of the school where trees hid them from the eyes of others.

Liam nodded when Aleya asked him if he could replicate the card. Handing her back the card, he closed his eyes, and focused. A soft glow radiated from his hands as clear crystals started to form. The crystals soon became flatter and smoother and their colours started to change. Gradually the glow began to fade away from his hands. In place of the glow was now a plain ID card. On the card was a serious picture of Liam, his location, and his date of birth, which he had put the same as Aleya's since he did not want to put an age that wasn't believable by accident. Everything else that was supposed to be on the card was also there. To make sure that nobody would suspect it of being fake he also cast a simple spell on the card that would cause people to not want to question any of its information. He held the card up for Aleya to look.

"Will this work?" he asked her, his amber eyes staring at her intently "Is there any other information I should know that I might be asked?"

As Liam formed the ID card, Aleya looked around for watchful eyes. Good, nobody around. So far this was easy and it helped that other kids were in their classes. She watched the rest of the formation; she felt the energy from him as if it were her own. What a strange feeling and yet a comforting sensation. It was like her blood came alive, warming her. Once the card was finished, Aleya felt Liam's magic fade to almost nothing. She figured the reason for the faint pulse of his magic running through her was because he was near her. A sincere smile crossed her face in knowing that calming fact.

Liam held the card for Aleya to see. His stark expression made her giggle, even that's how everyone looks in their pictures, his reminded her of how he's always like that. Then she looked over where he lived, with her since he moved from Ireland according to Aleya, and then she came across her own birth date except on his card. This could be a bit concerning since it shows that he already lives with her and on top of that has the same birthday as her. Already she could imagine the questions and comments people will have.
"You're going to have to move your birth date to a different month. It will raise too many questions when people ask you when your birthday is, and trust me, you will be asked by a lot girls..." She trailed off imagining girls climbing all over him wanting to be with him. The thought was forced out of her mind when the late bell rang.

A different month? Liam thought back to the calendar he had seen in Aleya's kitchen. If he didn't use her month of birth, which one would he use? He remembered the picture that was on October; it was of a colourful autumn forest. The orange and yellow leaves reminded him of the jewels that he wore on his body. Liam changed the month to October, left the year the same, then changed the day of birth to the third; he wasn't sure why he chose that number.

Just after Liam had finished changing the dates on the card the late bell rang. He held up the card again for Aleya's approval before they headed back towards the office. Hopefully this would do. He didn't want to make Aleya any later for school. Back in his own world he remembered one of his master's sons coming back with red marks on their hands for being late. Although, even if someone did try to hurt Aleya he wouldn't let them.

Liam thought of the size of the school and how many students it contained as they walked back towards the office. With this many people in one place there was bound to be some conflict. Feeling out with his energy he did sense a few hostile energies in the school, though none of them were directed at Aleya at the moment. The people that he had detected were simply the delinquents of the school, not much of a threat. What he didn't realize though was how much things would change when he was actually enrolled in the school.

The energy Aleya felt before when Liam made the card came back, but only a small amount, just enough to change the date for his own birthday. She couldn't help but think him cute while he concentrated. Straight face, but his eyes changed from before. When he was in his true form his eyes were quite intimidating, and now they seemed... almost emotional. Aleya smiled. There was hope for him yet.
Liam's card held in front of her broke her thoughts. The late bell rang, so she quickly checked over it again before approving the October, 3rd date, the year was left the same obviously. She nodded and raced for the doors with Liam in tow.

Inside, the school looked very up to date and yet the outside still held stony Victorian walls. Aleya never noticed this before until the day she shifted worlds. It was like the doors itself were a portal. A shiver crawled up her spine from the thought. She hoped Shadowkins didn't have the same magic potential as the Sunkin. She couldn't deal with that, and more afraid that her dad would kill her.

Aleya found herself walking alone, she turned around and found Liam wandering and seemed to be lost in thought. She wondered what he was thinking and if this place might hold some memories of his world. Did he have memories? Another time and place for that, right now they had to get to the reception desk. "Do I need to hold your hand everywhere?" She tugged on his arm, hand in hand and forced him to follow her.

"Mr. Everett, no?" A creeky old voice of an aged woman spoke. Anytime she spoke she seemed to love the word "no" at the end of every sentence.
Liam looked at Aleya confounded at the old lady's question. Aleya nodded for him to answer "yes".

Liam was jerked from his thoughts when Aleya grabbed him by the arm, urging him to hurry. He hadn't realized how much he had slowed when he was trying to detect the energies of the students in the school. The jewel hidden in his forehead throbbed slightly, telling him to be less incompetent. As her Guardian he needed to be more alert and aware of the world, which reminded him, he really needed to learn more about this world. Aleya had been needing to help him much more than he liked lately.

A old frail woman greeted them when they finally arrived at the reception desk .

"Mr. Everett, no?" she asked him.

Liam was confused as to how to answer her, but then saw Aleya nod, signalling for him to say yes.

"Yes." he answered her, his voice clear and smooth. His enrollment into the school had finally began. The lady then had him fill out a series of papers and asked him a few questions. He asked Aleya telepathically about some of the more confusing ones. Since he was new to the school and city, they were able to get him into all of the same classes as Aleya so that she could help him get used the place. With everything finished, they could finally go to class.

"Thank you." Liam said politely to the lady as he gave a small bow, making her gasp and her wrinkled face crinkle into a small smile. It was considered polite to bow to people who had helped you in the world that Liam was from. His old master had made sure that he bowed to his guests and business partners whenever they visited. The habit was practically encoded into him.

Standing up straight again, Liam turned to face Aleya, his face wearing a small sweet smile, and his large amber eyes seeming to radiate warmth and energy. He was glad to have finally have finished enrolling and that Aleya could finally get on with her day. Hindering her progress always made him feel horrible, sometimes like he was in pain. Guardians were only supposed to help their masters, not cause them trouble.

As the gentle old lady handed Liam papers and asked a series of questions, he asked Aleya telepathically about what he should answer with, she answered back patiently. Patience was something to be treasured. Often she found if one were calm the time it would take a task would go by quicker than worrying and trying to get it done. This was one of those cases.

After the registration was finished the kind lady handed Liam back his ID card, but not before giving it another look. Her pale eyes gleamed under the light's reflection and quickly grinned. Her face brightened up again before Aleya or Liam could notice. "Such a handsome one," Pale eyes shifted to Aleya. "you're a lucky girl, sweetheart. Best keep him close."

Heat rushed to colour Aleya's cheeks. She didn't know how to respond to that, so she nodded, completely embarrassed which made the old woman chuckle.
Liam bowed to the woman. Aleya started thinking she should have said he came from Japan instead. Her palm rested on her face, as if she could be anymore mortified. Her eyes shifted from the white tiled floor to Liam. His eyes seemed to twinkle and wore a sincere smile. His face seemed so peaceful that it made Aleya forget why she was embarrassed at all. Unnecessary thoughts filled her mind about what it would be like being with him – but no. No time for that, ever. Not since the Shadowkin could be lurking around her world....

With Liam's enrollment complete, it was time to finally go to class. The office had already informed their homeroom teacher about him becoming part of the class. They were slightly irritated though that they had joined at such an odd time. Liam poked his head into the classroom. All eyes were on him. He felt slightly uneasy being surrounded by so many people, but detected no violent energy so he quickly relaxed.

"Liam, I presume." said the teacher as Liam entered the room.

"Yes." Liam responded, his voice was smooth and calming. His appearance made him stand out greatly from anyone else in the classroom with his perfectly maintained light blond hair, spotless skin, and warm amber eyes. Even with his altered appearance to look more human, he still looked like someone from another world; he looked more like an angel or a god than a human. The teacher briefly introduced Liam to the class, told him what the lesson they were working on was, and then directed him to his seat. Unfortunately, it was not beside Aleya. This made Liam slightly uncomfortable, but he had been lucky to have even been able to get into the same class as Aleya, for every other seat in the room was taken. Liam's seat was at the back of the room while Aleya's was near the middle. On either side of Liam sat two girls, both looking very interested in him.

Liam walked past his classmates to his seat in the back, everyone staring at him as he did. The two girl's seated next to him immediately introduced themselves and started to bombard him with questions, but they were quickly silenced by the teacher who glared back at them and ordered them to be quiet and pay attention to the lesson. He was grateful for the teacher interrupting them for he had no idea how to answer the questions the girls asked him.

Aleya turned her head slightly to see where Liam would sit for the remainder of the year. Between two squawking girls, of course. She felt sorry for Liam and gave out a sigh for him as if he couldn't the produce air to do it himself. That warm sensation came back like a little hum through her body. She looked at her hand as it started to glow, faintly. She quickly hid her hand in her sleeve and looked around cautiously making sure nobody saw. Her head jerked to face the front of the class as the teacher silenced the two annoying girly-girls with his booming voice. Kind of gave her a start for how thin the teacher looked. Relieved, she let out a breath to calm her nerves.
Relax and be yourself.

Aleya thought about it for a second. Bad idea. She didn't need him to be her Guardian while nothing was happening. For a moment she thought more carefuly.
You are relieved of Guardian duty while there are no threats. Your task is to learn about the students, but don't expect to understand them. Just...be yourself.

Aleya couldn't think of putting it any other way along with a command. She felt a little relieved and yet something inside her was... unnerving. Maybe she should be the one to relax. Realizing it must just be her, she decided to act like nothing new has happened and brushed all thoughts aside, buckled down and listened to the lesson given and got down to work.

Be yourself? But Liam was always himself... How could he not be himself? He didn't quite understand Aleya's words, but he would try to obey them. His task was to now observe and learn, and that was what he would do. When the teacher taught the lesson, Liam stared at him looking very focused. His eyes were opened wide and his face looked very serious and in deep concentration. The teacher was somewhat surprised, and didn't know if he should be happy, or scared by his powerful stare. Nonetheless, he continued on with the lesson. Soon, the teacher finished the lesson and handed out the homework, then was called down to the office for a message.

Liam was lucky. Mathematics was taught almost the same way in his world, and he also had perfectly memorized the day's lesson. The boy behind Liam and the two girl's that sat beside him stared in disbelief as he quickly finished the assigned homework. It had only taken him three minutes to finish everything.

"Wow! You're so smart!" exclaimed one of the girls "Could you help us with our homework?"

Liam looked up at the girls, not sure what to say back to them. Why should he help them? They were not his master. But, Liam then remembered that he was supposed to be learning more about these students. Perhaps he could learn more by helping these girls.

"That would be possible." said Liam "What is troubling you?"

The two girls leaned in towards Liam and put their homework questions on his desk. Liam then proceeded to explain the problems to them, but they didn't appear to be listening at all. Both the girls sat very close to Liam and simply gazed at his beauty. They nodded once in a while to pretend they were actually listening and giggled a few times to each other at how oblivious he was. Once they even touched a few strands of his perfect hair and smiled mischievously together, but he didn't react to it at all. Liam couldn't feel embarrassment or self-consciousness, which was why the girls were able to so easily take advantage of him. The boy behind Liam face-palmed. How could Liam be so smart yet so stupid?

Aleya tried with everything she had to concentrate on her work, but hearing those squeaky, giggling voices around Liam made her... frustrated. Frustrated that she couldn't get her work done in peace, but what was this tingling in her stomach? Surely she couldn't have feelings for him – he wasn't even human. Then what of his soul? Doesn't that make him human? Oh stop it! Concentrate!

The girls tried to keep their voices down and one accidentally giggled louder than she should have and scared Aleya, making her a dark line across her page utterly destroying her homework.

"That's it!" She marched to the back of the class where Liam and the two squawks sat. The girls seemed oblivious to her until Aleya made it clear that Liam was only trying to help them, not get with either of them.

"And what are you doing out of your seat, Ms. Sol?" Mr. James walked back in the class, invisible as ever until he speaks.
"We were just trying to get help with our work when she stomped over here." One of the girls said, so innocently.
"Ms. Sol, I'm surprised you'd behave in such a manner. Det-"
"But they were-!"
"D-E-T-E-N-T-I-O-N."

Aleya was mortified and horrified. The second day of school she gets detention! She fell into her seat surrounded by hushed giggles. Some of her friends just stared at her. They knew it wasn't like her at all.

Liam looked up to see Aleya walking towards him. She didn't look happy, and for some reason he felt like this anger was being directed at the two girls sitting beside him. Were they an enemy? No... that didn't make sense. He shook the thought from his head. This wasn't the right environment for a battle, and besides, it wasn't like they were physically harming her. Aleya seemed to calm a bit though after explaining to the two that he wasn't trying to "get with either of them," whatever that was supposed to mean, but as she talked to them the teacher, Mr. James, drifted into the room and walked behind Aleya. The conversation between them did not appear to have a good outcome for Aleya.

"Detention," the teacher had said. What could that be? Whatever it was... it obviously wasn't good. He felt pained as he saw Aleya walk back to her seat looking very shocked. The girls beside him followed his gaze then peered at him curiously.

"Is she your girlfriend?" they asked, staring at him very seriously as they did. From the way he had looked at her with such a sad expression they assumed he was, or that he at least had feelings for her.

Liam turned to them startled. Girlfriend? Friend? No. Aleya was his mistress, and he was her guardian, and that was it. He only vaguely understood what friendship was, but he was fairly sure that they would not be considered friends.

"No, she is not my… girlfriend" said Liam, acting as if it were very obvious. The two girls seemed pleased by his answer.

Soon after Aleya had walked back to her seat the bell rang. Liam was even quieter during the next class and ignored most of the other students. Instead, he made sure to focus his attention on the lesson that the teacher taught. Luckily, the two girls from before were not in this class, but there was one boy who seemed to be giving him odd looks, and he could feel violent energy radiating from him. Liam ignored the boy though, since he didn't feel him to be much of a threat, and besides, it wasn't like he was directing the energy at Aleya. Aleya's safety was what mattered most. Eventually though, after finishing a long note the teacher handed out their homework and then the lunch bell rang. Liam was surprised with the speed in which the students left the classroom, but he quickly weaved through the crowd of students to Aleya's location, waiting to see where they would go next.

The students seemed to be aware of Aleya's star-struck stare as she slowly walked down the hall. It was as if they didn't want to disturb her anymore than she already was. Even though Liam was sifting through students with ease it seemed he was getting further away from her. Distance.

Aleya made a sharp turn down another hall towards the detention room. She sighed heavily and thought it best to get it over and done with, and then deal with her father. She shivered at the fact. Her feet stopped in front the double doors. This must be what "welcome to hell" feels like.
Aleya was about to go through the doors when Liam appeared beside her. She gasped. She didn't see him beside her at all... it kind of gave her the creeps. But when she looked at his eyes that warm sensation came back and felt like everything was going to be all right. He gave her relief in a way no one ever could. This also scared her.

"You've got to stop doing that!" Aleya scolded, lightly as she caught her breath. She looked at him quizzically and continued, "What are you doing here anyway? You didn't get detention; they won't allow you in there."
Liam looked at her, confused. He was about to speak when Mr. James tapped him on the shoulder and told him to go home since he was a perfect example of an Honor Student. Aleya tried to smile at Liam to reassure him she will be alright, and will come home right after.
Aleya disappeared behind the double doors.

****
Another heave of a sigh escaped Aleya's lungs as she reluctantly took her seat, and was surprised to see the ever-so-polite elder lady from the reception desk. Her eyes seemed to always be smiling. She nodded at Aleya. "I'm surprised to see you here, Aleya."

"I am, too, Miss..." Aleya tried to find her name.
"Allotta." Miss Allotta handed Aleya a sheet of loose leaf. Aleya nodded, acknowledging her last name. "If you write a full sheet, I'll let you go early." She whispered in Aleya's ear, careful not to alert the other students of 'Special Treatment'. Aleya looked around the room and saw a few more students looking at her strangely. She shrugged it off as not expecting to see a perfect student in detention. Miss Allotta told everyone to stay in their seats as she went to get more paper and pencils for the group.

"What did you do to get in here?" A tall and buff boy asked. His dark eyes seemed to ask for trouble probably all the time she thought. His face was stony as he looked hard at Aleya. He wore a tight shirt that showed off his muscle and baggy pants with chains hanging outside his pockets. The side of his arm bore a tribal tattoo of something she couldn't recognize. Gangster most likely, and if that were the case she better be on her gaurd.
Aleya stiffened her posture and held her head level, refusing to show fear. "I confronted a couple girls that weren't letting Liam do his work... then Mr. James walked in class thinking I was starting a fight."
