The Game of Death (sign-up and OOC)

  1. Intro/The Chessplayer’s message
You find yourself in a slightly large room without any source of light. You wait two hours in total silence, possibly trying to find a way out and/or figure out where you are and how you got there.
There doesn't seem to be a way out, at least that you can see in the total darkness but finally, when the second hour ends a voice speaks to you over a radio in the ceiling. While the voice is somewhat computerized, you can still detect a sense of joy and excitement in the voice.

“Hey. I imagine you’re thinking about why you’re here right now. The truth is, I don’t want to waste what little time you have left…Don’t worry, I’m not going to kill you…Yet. I won’t kill you if you do exactly as I say. So listen very carefully, pull up a chair and make yourself some popcorn.

You’re pawns in…Let’s say… A game, my game. The only way to win is to kill everyone else. Until you are the last man, woman or whatever the hell it is you are standing. You don’t want to kill people? Fine, they’ll probably kill you and I’m pretty sure that you value your life, even just a little tiny, incy wincy bit. If it weren’t for the sense of self-preservation felt by almost every creature on Earth, especially us humans this game would be as boring as hell. Also, to make it less boring I’m adding a cash prize for the winner.

In case you get any smart ideas, if you don’t fight each other, if you try to stand together and find a way out of here…Think again. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve…But I won’t tell you. I don’t want to ruin the surprise!”

Shutters open in front of you, filling the room with a blinding light but before you step outside into the unknown you notice a metal crate. It opens at the same time as the shutters and inside is several items of equipment, supplies and two notes. The first note reads:

“Some things that you’ll need in order to make this experience funner for me." Signed The Chessplayer

    The second note reads

“P.S, I’ve scattered things around this island to make your stay here easier. Head for the center of the island for the most rewards!”

    Enemies
    Other Pawns

The Chessplayer has kidnapped an estimated 100-160 other “pawns” all around the island. Like you, they are trapped on the island and forced into the game. While their first instinct is probably to kill you on sight, some of them can be reasoned with for the most part.

Spring- The Creature That Stalks The Fields (open)
Described as a shadowy figure of seven feet tall with clawed hands, as stated before in Spring (see maps) this creature only comes out at night and while it will not attack unless provoked it is easily provoked. The best notion if you see the creature is to run from the field for it will not venture beyond it. It is extremely fast, very strong and can kill you in an instant.

    Autumn- Shadow People (open)

Beings composed of pure shadow, they can change into multiple shapes and as a result are quite fast. Light is their only enemy and they will only attack if you think about them, for they are attracted to and feed off of the fear of mortals.

    Autumn- Scythes (open)
These are large (7ft), slow moving, cloaked creatures named after the weapons they carry. They, unlike the shadow people can be avoided even if you are afraid of them. Their scythes are unnaturally large, sharp and are said to be able to cut through some metals.

    Autumn- Ravens (open)

Ravens, unlike Scythes and Shadow People will not attack you on sight and can leave Autumn if they wish. Ravens may look like ordinary people with pale skin and dark hair but they possess magical abilities. While these abilities can sometimes vary from Raven to Raven they all possess the ability to transform into a murder (a flock of ravens) or a lone raven and most of their magical abilities are based around dark magic. It is rare for a Raven not to have some kind of hatred towards humans. This could be due to their isolation on the island. They are not considered immortal but have longer lifespans than the average human.

    Autumn-Lycanthrope (open)

Humans with the ability to change into a large wolf-like creature at will. New “recruits” will change every full moon and have little control for many years (depending on how much training they have), but older Lycanthropes can change at will and have more control. The younger Lycanthropes pose little threat except during a full moon but the older ones pose a massive threat. Decapitation and silver are the only ways to kill these immortal beasts.

    Autumn-Vampire (open)

Vampires, like their Lycanthrope rivals are also immortal. They feed off of blood from humans and Ravens, seeing Lycanthrope blood as “vermin blood”. They possess supernatural abilities such as necromancy and illusions. They are very fast, strong and agile (some known to be able to punch through concrete) as well as intelligent. They do not hate humans, seeing them as food above anything else but detest Lycanthropes. The only ways to kill them are via decapitation, fire or stabbing them directly through the heart. Holy water, light and crucifixes will at best severely injure them.

    Winter-Wight (open)

A recently deceased body, either a human or animal that has been reanimated by the White Walker's dark magic, unlike zombies (see Surprises) removing the head or destroying the brain will not kill a Wight. Fire is the only effective method.

    Winter- White Walker (open)

White Walkers possess magical abilities related to ice and cold. Their arrival is usually accompanied by blizzards and the dropping of temperatures. They can also freeze anything they touch. White Walkers have superhuman strength and wield swords and spears made from unique ice crystals. Weapons constructed from Dragonglass are their only known weakness. Thankfully, these are quite rare and will only be encountered in the far North of Winter

    Surprises- Zombies (Class 1) (open)
This surprise can be released in any area of the island apart from Beach and Winter. These zombies are the slow-moving type that is normally found in large hordes. Depending on how annoyed The Chessplayer is, the larger the horde will be. As usual, removing the head or destroying the brain is the only way to deal with them.

    Surprises- Zombies (Class 2) (open)
This surprise can be only released in the same places as class one zombies. These zombies are relatively fast and smart but will be found in much smaller hordes than class one zombies.

    Surprises-Skeletons (open)

This surprise can be released anywhere on the island. A platoon of skeleton soldiers armed with swords, spears, bows and arrows. They can’t tire but are slower than the average human.

    Surprises-Drones (Class 1) (open)

Only deployable in Summer, Industrial and Beach these drones are only deployed in small numbers or one at a time (depending on how annoyed The Chessplayer is). Armed with a mini gun the only effective way to destroy this miniature tanks is to ambush them, likely from behind.

    Surprises- Drones (Class 2) (open)

Only deployable in Summer and Industrial, these drones are in short supply (due to their parts being used for other purposes) and so The Chessplayer will only deploy one at a time. As there are very few effective ways to destroy these drones, it is recommended that you trick them into running out of missiles (of which there are four).

    Surprises- Drones (Class 3) (open)

Standing at 5 foot ten, these drones are only deployable in Spring, Summer, Industrial and Beach. Each unit is combat ready and armed with an assault rifle. Destroying the eye will not permanently blind them, but it will cause severe damage to their vision and targeting.

    Surprises- Drones (Class 4) (open)

Deployable in Spring, Summer and Industrial these drones are the deadliest type. Standing at six foot three, class four is in short supply. Each unit is armed with a battle rifle, but without the rifle they can still prove extremely dangerous.

More surprises and other enemies will be introduced as the RP continues.

    Rewards

The Chessplayer has placed multiple “rewards” around the island in order to “make things easier”. They can vary depending on the area of the island and can be split into three categories. There is “physical” and there is “booster”. Physical includes firearms, swords, bombs, armor (ect) whereas booster includes needles that will grant the user a temporary superhuman/supernatural ability but there are also painkillers and stimpaks. The third category is other. Physical, Booster and the majority of Other can be found in hidden crates.

    The Island

NOTE: While the players are aware that “the game of death” takes place on an island, the characters have no idea (at first, but they can find out, especially if they try to escape from the island). Characters also have no maps (at first, but they can be easily found) and so will have little idea of the island’s layout.

The island is divided into six sections, each one holding different rewards as well as dangers and challenges.

    Spring

Spring is mostly made up of woodland, with two large woods that stretch on for almost nine miles. In-between those two sets of woods are a large plain area and a corn field. The plain is safe, but leaves you open to attack. It stretches on for three miles in four directions.

North and South will lead you into the two woodland areas. East will lead you into Summer but West leads you towards the field.

The corn that grows there is in fact edible. During the day, you can get lost in the corn field and others may try to ambush you but it does make a good hiding place. During the night, the corn field is stalked by a strange creature. It will not attack unless provoked but it will not take much to provoke the creature. This creature can be killed, but it is very difficult and probably not worth the risk.

Less frightening life can be found in the woodland areas where the likes of squirrels and birds can be found. If you can catch them, they are edible. The majority of food found in Spring is edible but there are exceptions. Several berries and species of plant are poisonous. The water from the streams in both woodlands is drinkable. If it weren’t for the threat of being brutally killed by opponents, the creature that stalks the corn fields at night or the “surprises” left by The Chessplayer if you refuse to fight, Spring seems like a pleasant place.

    Summer

The quickest route to Summer from Spring is East from the plains area. Summer itself is a dry and unforgiving place, stretching for ten miles. It holds several rewards however and has tactical advantages. Others caught in the game could be ambushed from the multiple rocks and caves found in Summer.
Snakes and coyotes pose a threat, but there are no creatures considered unnatural.

    Autumn

Autumn is the smallest area of the island and is somewhat similar to Spring as both have woodland areas. Autumn’s woodland area is a lot different. The majority of the trees are dead, and it is almost without life.

Almost, for many dangerous creatures can be found in Autumn and not all of them can be considered alive. A cold and dead air fills this area and while Autumn can be considered one of the most dangerous areas, it is the quickest way to the center of the island and holds many rewards.

Autumn can be found by heading south from Summer and south east from Spring.

    Winter

Winter is the largest area of the island and it can be found by traveling far enough north from any other area. Stretching for miles on end, Winter is a mountainous area covered in ice and snow.

It is densely populated with some dangerous creatures, but not considered as dangerous as those lurking in Autumn. Wolves, Direwolves and Polar bears cannot compare to the danger posed by creatures in Autumn.

But wolves and bears are not the only creatures in Winter that pose a threat.

    Industrial/Center

The middle of the island is an abandoned city close to complete ruin. Falling rubble is a possible danger you’d need to take into consideration. Industrial is where you’ll find most of The Chessplayer’s “surprises” and it holds the most rewards, but as a result of the rewards and the potential of a roof over your head the city will be infested with others caught in The Chessplayer’s deadly game.

    Beach and Ocean

Technically the largest area of the island ocean can be found by heading in any direction (apart from North) for long enough. Eventually you’ll arrive on a beach that stretches around the entire island. There are no dangers on the beach itself, but several rewards can be found. The ocean however is treacherous and holds no rewards or surprises, for The Chessplayer does not want you setting foot in the ocean or trying to leave the island. If you try to do so, a surprise will be sent after you.

  2. [IMG]

    Name: Gregory
Age and gender: 21 year old male
    Species: Human
Appearance: Six foot, Caucasian. He has long brown hair that covers his ears, yet leaves the right side of his face untouched. He has blue eyes and is somewhat pale.

    Notable skills: Creative, precise
    Starting location: Spring

Backstory: Gregory’s life so-far has been a mixed one. His father was arrested when he was seven for selling cocaine, leading to him being severely bullied in secondary school. He didn't stay to do A-levels, instead doing a course in filmmaking and photography at college. It was there he met Naomi, although she was doing a separate course than him (health and social care) the two really bonded during a friend’s 18th birthday party.

Gregory had his first kiss at the age of 17, that night. After college, he took on multiple photography jobs (mostly weddings) until getting a job for the BBC. He bonded well with Naomi’s family (especially her father) and was considering proposing to Naomi, but being caught in The Chessplayer’s game may have damaged his plans.

  3. Name: Trang
Age and gender: Male, early 60s
    Species: Cyborg

    Starting location: Spring
Personality: Has serious mental scars. It is possible he has a case of PTSD (never officially diagnosed). Trang is strong, he holds nothing back but dislikes killing
Backstory: Trang, (a Vietnamese name meaning honorable) was born in 1953 in North Vietnam. As a young man he fought against American forces in the Vietnam war but sustained serious burns all over his body as a result of napalm. Not only was his first near-death experience but his left arm also needed to be amputated as a direct result of the burns. Several decades after the war, Trang was offered to be part of a project in human cybernetics. Parts of his body that were destroyed by the napalm were replaced and although the process took over three years, by the end of it Trang felt like a new man.

It wasn't long after this that Trang’s enhancements caught the attention of multiple criminal organizations across Asia. He refused to take part in such activities and as expected, this didn’t go down well. During one encounter in a bar, Trang tried to defend both himself and a young man (who was in the wrong place at the wrong time). In the process he killed three members of the Yakuza. It was the first time he had killed anyone since the war. While attempting to flee back to Vietnam he fell asleep at some point and woke up in the large dark room.

Backstory: Frank feels he has almost completed his life. He married at the age of 25 and has “traveled the world”. He had one kid, Mary and watched her grow up. As a single parent, Frank took far less risks during his career as a police officer in Prescott Valley (Arizona). After Mary went to college, Frank began to take more risks, believing that his “mission as a parent” was complete. He recently retired and while he hoped for it to be a long and easy retirement, he didn't expect to be captured by The Chessplayer.
