Onyx watched Axel do his thing, sniffing around and inspecting the prints in the snow and the blood trails before heading off in the direction he'd decided on. Onyx and Redbird followed as he began to traverse the dense wood and the three of them made their way as quickly as possible whilst remaining stealthy. They trekked for a good while, with only the odd comment from Axel or Redbird along the way but Onyx didn't hear what was said: his mind was in other places, as it often was.
He was wandering as a wolf through the wood just outside the borders of his pack's territory, looking for new things to discover. He was so inquisitive in his youth and spent so much more time as a wolf than he does these days. Suddenly a smell filled his nostrils. A smell that was completely new to him, yet somehow vaguely familiar at the same time.
Onyx blinked and the memory dissipated. Looking around, they were passing through a large clearing in the trees. Redbird said something which might have been a rebuke aimed at Axel but Onyx wasn't focused enough to recognize what was said and his mind soon dragged him back into his past once again.
This time he was in his human form and he was stood with Ambertalon, whose face was sympathetic but stern. Onyx pleaded with him, "You can't make me choose. You're my best friend, you have to understand, I can't-- I can't--"His legs gave way beneath him and he sat crumpled on the floor looking exasperated,"I can't leave, but I-- I can't abandon them either. Don't make me choose."
A chilling half-growl, half-howl not too far off jolted him back to the present, sparing him the pain of reliving any more of it. He was a little dazed at first, not really taking much in properly, like he was in the clearing: all he knew at first was that they were ascending a steady incline and that there was a mountain a little way ahead. Suddenly it struck him and he came around completely from his muse, "That was Lilith's battle-cry... she's fighting. It was close but we need to hurry, if she's fighting Caleb we don't have much time."
