The Exposure

Clank, clank, clank.... The sound of metal resounded in the room, however, the chamber and the liquid had muffled it all. Where was this? What was it doing here? "I'm scared" The being mouthed, being unable to speak. "Mommy... Daddy..." It mouthed again, yet no words came out. Not even a gasp, not even a sigh, not even a whisper escaped those lips of it. It couldn't see, but it knew it was still in a small chamber. "Wha-- Ma... Da..."

The thing barely whispered, and at the moment, there were only a few scientists in the lab. It could only hear faint bickering, all that didn't matter. It looked down at it's own body, careful not to make too many harsh movements, finding that it was in an unfamiliar body, all bruised up. It was scared. It wanted to get out.

"AAAAAaaaAAAAaaaAAaaAAAAA!!!" It screamed out. The scream was distorted, and it sounded almost disturbing, like how the television wouldn't be working and there was an annoying buzzing sound. There were also multiple voices to add onto it, which was highly unnatural. Despite being in a chamber, and underground, the people in the bluecorp would be able to hear, an it would raise suspicion. However those who were aware would simply say it was their imagination.

However, the sound echoed, even into the slums of the blighted, and the luxury of the purists. The purists in their homes would not hear a thing, however, it would be more louder in the area where the blighted were. The scream echoed for a while, and soon enough, fell silent.

What had silenced the thing was another scientist. They had stopped the air flowing in and out, causing it to pass out from lack of oxygen.

"Oh?" Arden echoed.

Well connected. Arden knew what that was like. The boy wasn't stupid, obviously setting up good relations to keep himself from being snared. Arden was envious for a fleeting moment. How nice would it be to live a life with no strings attached. He was undoubtedly good at what he did, as amusing his way of working was.

"Blight huh? That must make it convenient with collecting from purists", Arden waggled her hand by her face mischievously.

"Although," she trailed on watching how she was treading in this murky patch, "It must make it hard to touch people.."

Arden scolded herself silently for such audacious words, but her impulse was throbbing, begging to be acted upon. She couldn't ignore it. Not when the boy was so endearing with the way he swung the bat nonchalantly. The occasional scuff against the gravel was the only noise besides their conversing voices. Arden found that he was easier to relate to when doing small actions like such. Smiling sweetly, Arden felt her feet move against her opposing mind, arms sweeping themselves around his torso.

How odd. Arden was swept with bittersweet longing when grasping him tightly. The slightly damp patch on the back of his neck from work smelled lightly of his own personal scent, dirt mingling in the small spikes of his hair tickling the her nose. Arden had not hugged someone in probably years. One day her parents had dropped her and never picked her back up again. Somehow, this hug brought forth an aching of tears to her eyes, but Arden smiled despite them.

So, the newest defense Bluecorp had produced worked then. The stretchy film covering her skin was undetectable, barely even felt by Arden. And it protected her from direct contact with blight. Hope and pride swelled in her chest, the smallest twinge that maybe with this, interaction with the blighted would ease the discrimination.

Hours have flown by. What time was it? It was probably the middle of the night at this point, and the thing slowly woke up from passing out. It looked around slowly, not daring to move in fear of being put to sleep again. It stood there, motionless, and finally, the scientists looked up at it, waving their hand up. All of a sudden, the top of the chamber was released, so easily as well. It was unable to comprehend how it was so easily taken off, considering how it had attempted to get out numbers times by forcefully banging it's hands on it and not making it move a budge. Suddenly, two large hands grabbed it's arms, and pulled it up. It was cold, the cold metal hitting it's naked and bruised body, along with the air it was so not used to. It was so cold, and it didn't like it. Before it could react, a person stuck something sharp into it's body, and it let out an agonizing scream. "HYKAAAAAAAAAAAA" It's loud voice would pierce one's eardrums, however before long, it passed out once again. The bruising on it's body slowly disappeared, little by little, to the point where all the bruising would be out of plain sight. The doctors marvelled at their work, however the thing was still laying there, motionless, but breathing.

Before even realizing what to make of this, they threw it back into the chamber, locking it up.

"I can hear you, you know." She called out behind her. She dropped the larger staff in front of the girl before responding to her. "Get up. You'll be fine." She responded coldly, yet surprisingly reassuring.

"No, I don't need to be anywhere, I do, however, have somewhere we can go." The staff was heavier than it looked, but that gave it more momentum for damage.

She then turned around, tightly gripping her staff to guard the girl while she did whatever it was she wanted to do. Eyes and ears were both kept out for the one she heard following behind.

Leo was smiled a little when she agreed with his blights convenience. He liked it, that someone other than him saw the good side to the disease. However, that was only an excuse to reassure the boy. When she mentioned the touching people, the reality of her words hit him hard. The blight was one of the reasons he chose this way of life. The less people he talked to, the less he would have to touch.

The boy had begun to unravel one bandaged hand. He revealed the blighted mark that covered it, it spread all up his arm towards his elbow.

He was surprised to say the least. He felt her arms wrap around him. Leo could feel her warm body press against his, the action caused a slight blush to form on his face. This sort of thing had never happened before so he was a little confused. When he regained his senses the blush faded and he began to speak. "What are you doing?" he asked her. Looking down at the girl, she was slightly smaller than him, he was clinging to his body. "You are going to be inf....." his words trailed of when he noticed something strange. The blight from his arm was not spreading and infecting her body. But their skin was touching. How?

It slowly woke up, glancing out and watching the doctors marvel at their new found discovery. These people.. They were insane. It was still unable to make up the words they all blubbered, however, it just smiled menacingly. Die it mouthed, kicking at the glass of the chamber. The chamber's glass was strong, however, it was able to break through it with one fell swoop. The being's leg began bleeding, however soon regenerated by curing the wounds. It had the experiments performed on it to thank.

It was walking, bare foot and nude across the floor where the liquid would drench the floor with glass scattered about on the ground, if not already piercing an unlucky one. It could not clearly hear them, and it smiled. "Emergency! Emergency! Everyone evaluate! Don't let Experiment BIH #957 touch you!" One of the scientists would say on a speaker, ringing out through the entire Bluecorp. Those who did not know, were forced out of the building, and those who did, were either fleeing, or preparing for the worst.

"Die.. Die... All of you die!" It began yelling, in a somewhat feminine voice. The body was no older than that of a 16 year old, and it's hair was drenched and soaked. Due to being cold, it approached another scientist, cowering in fear and it giggled, kicking the man with it's barefoot. Due to skin to skin contact, the doctor would soon become infected because of how deprived it was. It began beating the man, a smile on it's face. "Deserve it.. Deserve it.." It said, kicking the man over and over again.

After the man was beaten to death, the thing took the lab coat, and placed it on it's body. Due to the experiments, it was able to shift it's appearance into that of the owner of the clothing it wore, due to there having particles of their DNA attached to it. However, it would not retain the knowledge of the original person. After slaughtering all the scientists in the lab, it hid the body it took form of, running out with a smile on it's face.

As it ran, it acted injured, trying to limp as fast as it could as people ran by to stop the experiment they assumed was still in the room. They let the disguised experiment go, right under their noses. Right after it left, little droplets of gold ran down it's hand, and onto the ground. The little droplets scurried around the building, and it would make it's way down to the blighted parts of town. Just before it left, the speaker rang out again, and this time, as a warning to all purists and blighted. "EMERGENCY. A VERY DANGEROUS BEING HAS COME LOOSE. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, DO NOT COME INTO BZZZZ WITH THE BEING. I REPEAT DO NOT--" Before the man could finish the sentence, there was a loud explosion heard out in the distance, bombing the Bluecorp building. Although killing many, some would have been able to survive, however very few people.

A satisfied experiment smiled to itself, with the coat on, and hiding back into the shadows.

Arden gave the boy one final squeeze before stepping back. Her hands trailed down his shoulders before grasping his unbandaged hand. Tucking loose strands behind her ear, Arden lifted his hand up, showing him a better view. Both hands were locked together, and despite the purple blight, it did not spread to Arden's skin.

"Well? How is it to touch someone?" Arden questioned him softly.

Her own cheeks were slightly tinged pink from being a bit more intimate than she would've liked. Still, she knew that her remark about his abstinence from contact and being treated as if he was the disease had chewed on him more than she could understand. Arden squeezed his hand before releasing it, not wanting him to feel any more uncomfortable with the surprising touch of another. Hopefully he wouldn't get angry at her and attack her with the bat. Arden knew it certain people caught her off guard with intimate touch she would have no qualms doing the same.

Even so, the girl was confused about her own actions. She never was this kind. Still, something about this boy reflected things she could not place into words. A desire to stay near or protect. Arden was currently torn between trying to wedge herself further into some forced relationship with him or drawing back. Despite this, a hope burned in her that there wouldn't be rejection after her little experiment.

Ray stood to his feet and turned around. Screaming? He turned his head toward the Bluecorp building, heat rushing through his cheeks and body. He felt his heart pounding in his wrist, neck and temples. Could it be? n..no..no.. The loud screaming, the wailing of an alarm... it was familiar to him. The frightening noise echoed in the air more than once, causing Ray to panic.

The panicking clouded his hearing to the point where he could no longer focus on the sound of the two girls arguing behind him. He activated his trusty eyepatch and scanned the area around him. Its range was not very large, but it could detect severely blighted persons... or things...
Ray hoped it wasn't a thing.

%Scanning... Detection mode...No blights detected.. Ray moved in a 360 degree motion, scanning everything, including the sky. He hoped Bluecorp hadn't just gone through with that. The eyepatch beeped. %Scanning... heavy blight approaching...

Ray gulped and took a deep breath. The hair on his arms stood up after the loud bang... an explosion. Fire and smoke scaled the sky."Oh dear..." he muttered, his arms dropping to the side.

"Have fun in hell."

It smiled at what it had accomplished, moving quickly through the shadows. It was only wearing a lab coat mind you, so it wasn't as warm as it expected it to be. Despite being severely blighted, there were no traces on it's body which proved it, thus it would be hard to actually come to a conclusion. After a while of running, it stopped, and took a look around at it's surroundings, at the people on the streets. Where was this place? It was familiar.. Where was this? It began panicking, looking around while wrapping the lab coat snuggled on it's body. It was used to being in high protected facilities, considering that it was an underground project; literally.

It was in range of the male whom sported the eye patch, and it's ears perked up upon hearing him speak. There were actually things, no, people outside of the chamber it always knew of as it's entire world. The being let out a soft sigh, coming out from the shadows. It had used up a lot of energy, and now, it was in complete, plain sight. Aside from the lab coat which made it look like a shapeless blob, the being was skinny. Not over skinny, but somewhat slender and had a balanced physique. It's hair was long and wavy, and was actually dry and soft despite being in a chamber for most it's life. It stood at a short 5', and it's bangs hid the upper part of it's face.

It was about to say something, however, the most it could make up was "Blight... On.. Me?" It asked, speaking in very broken english. Before giving him a chance to respond, it nodded it's head and smiled, only to retrieve into the shadows of the trees once more. He was blighted, it didn't need to do anything here. It's target however... Were the purists. All of them.

Kleo stretched her sore limbs, hearing the satisfying crack. Kleo picked up the staff that Kai dropped on the ground and stood up, making her way over to her side. The staff felt odd in her hands, unbalanced. She grimaced at how heavy it actually was, Kleo did not expect that.

"What'd you hear?" She grunted, her back was still aching from sitting for so long. Her senses weren't as heightened as they were when she was fully awake. She looked over at Kai with a pout. "Don't tell me we've got more walking to do." she grumbled darkly.

Leo was lost for words a little. He couldn't and didn't say anything for a while. Just trying to think about why she was not infected. As well as the feeling of touching someone without infecting them. Lots of thoughts ran through the boys head as he just stood in front of the girl.

His train of thought was stopped when the girl asked a question, her voice was soft. Leo didn't reply straight away. He just watched as she lifted his hand up. The contact was clear, yet the purple blight did not infect her pure skin.

"It's definitely a new feeling" Leo said with a small laugh. He couldn't remember a time when he wasn't blighted. It only started on his hands, but spread quickly up his arms as he grew up. Touching someone without his bandages on felt very different, and he wasn't quite sure if it was a good or a bad thing. Not only did the fact she wasn't infected confuse him, but the fact she seemed to want to stay with him.

Leo began to re-wrap his hand with the bandages, as he did he began to speak. "Where is it that you are from again?" he asked.

Since the guy failed to show her this new place where she would be staying and seemed to have just vanished from existance, Daria was forced to move on. The straps of her rucksack had began to rub against her shoulders and she was sure that blisters were beginning to form on her hand from where she was carrying her suitcase. It made her sick to see any Bluecorp signs or advertisements, hatred boiling in her stomach at what they had done as she carefully avoided any other Deprived thatclooked ready to attack.

Daria had stopped momentarily to pull out a glove from her bag, wanting to cover the area of her blight from the rest of society. It was too embarrassing. Too humiliating. What was she to do now? Nowhere to live. Nowhere decent to rest her head for the night. She was going to have to sleep on the street...and her Blight was bound to get worse from there.

Ray stood only a few feet away from It. He took a deep breath and eyed it carefully. "So they have completed it, huh?" he muttered to himself and turned the detector off.

Experiment BIH #957. A Bluecorp secret project aimed at taking over the government. Ray was on the team that created its first cells and worked on it under the belief that it was a cure for the infection. What he did not know, however, was the fact that whenever his shift ended, another person would take his place, and alter the formula they were working on. Ray noticed the sudden change in his equations, causing him to get fired by his superiors. He did not know what he had done wrong, but his suspicions left him at unease.

When Alexa died, giving him the infection, Ray began sneaking every day into Bluecorp. He had hacked into their system and gone through their files, records, archives... everything. Unfortunately, he never could find any tangible proof as to how the experiment was altered. All the records of the cameras that monitored the working place underground, had either been deleted or edited, leaving no trace of whatever suspicious action that might have taken place.

Ray placed his hands into his pockets and marched over to the creature, which seemed to him very oddly human. He stood in front of it and took his hands out of his pockets. "Hi." He simply said.

The creature looked up at him, unbeknowest what he hoped to achieve from speaking to it. For now, it stayed in the shadows, looking up and down and scanning him and the surroundings. It slowlt crawled out of the bushes, looking up at him, and staying silent.

The expiriment was a sucess, however, it had left far too early, and so was considered 'incomplete' as they needed to give it a vital piece; a mind of it's own. It had escaped before they could insert that, and so now it was an emotionless hunk of liquid, human, and blight.

There was never anything regarding the expiriment in the documents or files, being kept on a seperate main computor or in files underground. The expiriment now, was more or less living proof however, there was no proof attaching it to Bluecorp since it had rid all of the evidence by blowing it to oblivion.

It didn't seem to move as the man marched up to it, staring at his movements and watching his lips part only to say a short word. It didn't know how to respond, however only repeated what the man had said.
".... Hi."

Ray smiled widely. It understands He thought. From the looks of it, the creature was still fresh in the head. A blank paper waiting to be written on. This could be very beneficial to both Ray and humanity. If he could somehow raise this... boy? girl?, and fill its head with his ideals, he would be able to bring down Bluecorp's brain, its CEO, its superior. A mysterious person who had never shown their true face to any of the staff members.

Ray reached out his hand slowly and carefully. He did not wish to startle the being whose face he could barely see. He observed it carefully, crouched before it and placed the palm of his hand on its hair. "Welcome to life." He gave it a warm smile, hoping it would be the first thing he carved on its brain.

The creature was like a new born baby, a very destructive one if it wanted to be. It looked up and down, and then at it's surroundings. It didn't know why the man was grinning. Was it a good thing for it, or a bad? It couldn't tell what was in store for it, only being familiar with the feeling of fear and pain, along with a lonely warmth. The problem he had to face was that although it lacked a mind of it's own, it's purpose was already imprinted somewhere, deep in it, in the form of a blight that would be otherwise deadly to humans.

It didn't know why, but it had such an urge tugging at it. It wanted-- no, it had to infect people for some reason, and it felt somewhat conflicted. It was created for the sole purpose to infect, yet why was it letting itself be held back by an already infected human? It didn't make sense. Upon hearing the word 'life', it froze for a moment, and pointed at the man, and then itself. Being an it, it didn't have the genitals of a male nor a female, however it did take the form and shape of a female.
"Life...?" It asked, like a child asking their guardian a question when first learning how to speak.

Ray leaned against the tree and slid down, sitting on the ground next to the bush the being was hiding in. He looked at the creature then turned his gaze toward a cat. It was surrounded by kittens... Its babies. They were playing. Some were breast-feeding. He pointed his finger at them. "That, is life." He then proceeded to point at the creature itself. He poked its arm. "You feel that? It's called being alive." Ray kept a sincere smile on his face, hoping it would bring warmth inside the "girl's" confused heart.

"Where is it you're from again?"

Arden hesitated, unwilling to speak of Bluecorp company that was known for its cruel treatment towards those ill with blight. Summoning up a bit of courage, her words were cut off before she could form some kind of flimsy answer to hand out to him.

-Beep- -Beep-

Arden felt herself jump slightly, not expecting the sudden noise besides human voice. Looking down at her pocket, she slipped the small pager out. The words that filtered across the screen soured her mood, darkening whatever light joy she had felt moments before. Clicking the answer button, she held it up to her ear, scowling slightly.

"What?"

"Ma'am there's been a security breach. Experiment B.I.H. #957 has escaped and currently is unsupervised in the nearby neighborhoods. Your father has requested you return immediately. It's no longer moderately safe out there, we don't know if that severe of a blight can overtake the Ad.4 prototype."

Arden pinched the bridge of her nose, counting to ten silently in her head. #957 escaped. Of course it did. Despite Arden having to borderline harass these scientists to approach all subjects in a fashionable and humane manner, they no doubt abused the poor thing until it retaliated. Now here she was, cleaning up yet again another one of her father's messes. Arden had disagreed with the Experiment B.I.H. but she was in no position of authority to overturn it. They were going to be sending out the E.I.S. tonight. Arden became distraught, knowing she could do nothing further out here.

"Expect me back in ten minutes".

With that she terminated the call, slipping the pager back into the folds of her skirt. She noticed the boy out of the corner of her eye and turned to give him a bright smile.

"Sorry, looks like I'm needed elsewhere, duty calls ya know? Anyway, if you need anything", Arden slipped off one thin silver band off her wrist, the only thing on her wrist, and clasped it around his own bandaged wrist.

"Just use this to get through the gate. If there's any issues tell them that Arden Bluevern has requested you. They'll page me if they're stupid enough and I'll get the issue resolved for you. Stay clear okay? The Titus family is a savage one", Arden instructed, tossing out one more wistful smile.

Oh how she did not want to leave. Not when there was so much promise in one person who had nearly splattered a man's brains onto the gravel. Yes, her father would be overjoyed if she showed up with someone like this. Yet, there was something endearing about those cold cut orbs that tracked her every movement, aware of the small things she noticed about him. Arden couldn't call this anything but fascination. Anything else would be irrational, against the basic rules of human interaction. There wouldn't even be the mention of the far-fetched possibility because Arden was leaving and highly doubted the guy would ever come to her for help. It saddened her, but she hid it as she turned around the corner of the alleyway, casting out one small wave. Why did it hurt to know that the silver band she had given him would probably be sold off to some family. How tragic. In the end, she would just have to deactivate it like everything else significant in her life.

"That's not a problem" he smiled as the girl announced she must leave. It really didn't surprise Leo that she had to go. But he was caught off guard when she clamped a metal bracelet around his wrist. It was an entry pass into the pure zone. He had only seen them, never had he touched one. He grinned widely as he waved good bye. The metal around his wrist would be very useful.

Leo began to walk back himself. He removed the metal band and twirled it around his fingers. The thought of how much this thing could go for was the only thing on his mind. A pass into the pure zone could be sold to one of the gangs for a very high price. Leo was definitely happy she gave it too him. However something seemed off. When he walked back, he felt like he was missing something. "Bluevern.....Bluevern" he said to himself. "She's Bluecorp" he almost shouted, finally figuring out what was off. He had just been talking to the heir of the Bluecorp company, the ones who practically hunt blighted he thought to himself. This would be very useful for him in the future. If he could get help from Bluecorp, then he could finally get some new equipment. He smiled to himself as he put the metal band back on, he would hang on to this for a while.

The boy stopped off at the small time Boss that had hired him. He dropped off the money and kept his share. After he returned to his home. It wasn't too bad for a blighted. Since he was making a fair bit of money, he could afford a bit. However it was in a remote area of the slums, rather hard to get to. Just how he liked it. Leo walked into one room and chucked the metal band onto the table. The room was filled with half built machines and scrap metal. It seemed to be some sort of engineering room. The boy walked over to a cabinet and hung up his bat, it was placed beside a large variety of weapons. He then made his way to the sofa area in the next room. He slumped down onto the soft sofa and almost fell asleep. It wasn't a very hard working day, but boy was it eventful. Leo still couldn't believe that he was talking to the heir of the Bluecorp family. The boy let out a soft sigh and closed his eyes.

....

It didn't know what to think about those kittens. Something inside it seemed to be stirring, and it wasn't a good thing. From being traumatized it's entire 'life', it could barely relate to those who lived it. In fact, all this time, it had been merely existing, having to put up with trials, experiments, injections, and yet they refused to let it die. It hurt, it really did. With it's body being 47% water, and 3% human, it was able to manipulate it's own particles to become liquid, like a slime of some sort. A contaminated one. No, it's not the kind that look for intercourse.

Due to the immeasurable amount of torture it had received, it was unable to comprehend the value of other lives, and so without a second thought, the thing's eyes lit up, from a colourful purple to a dark red. droplets trickled down it's hand and towards one of the kittens, who was foolish enough to think it was going to play. The droplet trickled to the mother, and the mother instantly started hissing at it, as if it knew it were dangerous. It's face went from confused and soft, to psychopathic.

"Life... Life... Dies.. Life dies... die... DIEDIEDIEDIEDIE!" It shouted, smiling and laughing at the same time. At that instant, the gold droplet, that appeared harmless, exploded. It would completely obliterate the kittens and the plants around it, causing considerable damage to the male who showed it the cats. The creature had been caught in the blast, however the over skin regenerated. Before it were regenerating, one would see a dark, severe bruise under it. It was far more severe than usual, and it would kill a man from having this amount of blight. It was the type of bruising you would find on the skin after breaking a bone, even worse sometimes. The skin was completely black, with the exception of a few purple spots, and that was only part of the skin.

The explosion was loud enough to be heard by neighbours, and some poor passerby would have been caught in it.
