The Elder Invasion: CHAPTER 4 - Insanity

Re: Insanity - CHAPTER 4

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!"

The golden light was torn from his body in a single rush, spilling up towards the metal sphere that hung from the Harbinger. Asmodeus's back arched as light ripped from his sternum, his cries eclipsing the storm. There was a shockwave that tore the feathers from his wings, leaving only shuddering bone, blackened and wilting. His hair shot back to pale blonde, as if with fright, and his eyes went wide and azure blue.

The entire quantity of Confluence, bestowed on him by the universe, was now through his body ripped upwards and outwards, like water pulled through the soil and out of the leaves of a tree. His body shuddered and his eyes erupted in tears. For a moment he tried to lunge upwards, to strike with his swords at the bomb, but then hot metal slammed into him. From the hatch of the Harbinger, the surviving ISAF soldiers manning the craft opened fire and sent a full salvo slamming into the angel. And as the last of the light was expelled the angel dropped onto his back, the swords falling from his hands.

The Harbinger lifted, the metal bomb glowing with silver energy as it turned towards the advancing Scorpion.

The others had taken cover by the hover-car, or had already fled. Only two people remained between the Harbinger and the Scorpion...

Asmodeus.... and Palonis, still impaled to the floor.

The angel's breathing was rapid, his eyes wide as he watched the feathers of his wings flutter around him. "What...?" He rolled over onto his front, coughing and wincing in pain. His hands searched, trying to find his swords, then stopped as he saw something in the distance, just beyond the legs of the Scorpion.

The smile of Coffeecakesadist twisted, further than it should have, into cruelty and lewdness. As the Scorpion advanced, the mentor reached for his sugegasa hat, as if to doff it in salute. Asmodeus screamed his name, but there was no answer. The man simply removed his hat, letting the red sun of Insanity gaze upon his face.

A stranger's face...

No... not a stranger. They had met before.

In the Mage Tower, in Shifter Town, as everything fell apart.

The Hijacker smiled, discarded his CoffeeCake disguise, and turned to walk away.

And then Asmodeus screamed, coming suddenly onto his back, reaching up a feeble hand at the Harbinger. "No! Drake, Myrn! Wait! Please! Oh God, wait! No! Don't do this! Don't do this!!"

It was too late. Myrnodyn and Drake had got back inside the hatch and the Harbinger had taken up position. The craft made a straight run towards the Scorpion, the bomb hanging beneath it and swelling with power. Asmodeus tried to crawl after it, tears streaming from his face. "No wait! Please! Please wait... it's a lie! It's all a lie! You'll need me! YOU'LL NEED ME! DRAKE! MYRN!!! NOOOO!!!"

He noticed Palonis lying impaled beside him and he gripped at the blade, trying to free the dying ninja. "Palonis! They don't understand. You have to stop them! Please!" He could not shift the blade, so he simply pulled the ninja towards him, hugging him as he wept. "I don't want to go! Not like this! NOT LIKE TH.."

The bomb exploded.

And in one single moment the entire force of Confluence was unleashed from Drake and Myrnodyn's bomb.

The Scorpion was lifted from the ground and flung away like a ragdoll, the Harbinger flying in the opposite direction. And down below, every sensation of pain and anguish was amplified to the point of unconsciousness. The land of Insanity was bleached white, the red sun eclipsed, the air turned from purple to green, then blue, then white.

And on the horizon... at the edges of reality.... the Mirror cracked.

It was a tiny breach at first... a small hole... through which shone.....

...

... a light.

Asmodeus saw it, even as whitness eclipsed him, and his last thought was the last the angel would ever feel....

..... he had been wrong.

The Mirror shattered into a thousand pieces, and the Hero of Iwaku... at last... was known.
