Meric

"No thank you. I think I can manage getting dressed."

"Ah...but of course." Meric quietly monitored Aveline as she stood to receive her costume and head into the changing room. He wanted to escort her, just to watch her steps for her, but knew she needed to to this on her own. To baby others when they're down only makes them fall lower and lower. Still, being the gentleman that he is, it tore his soul in two to just stand there as she bobbled and felt her way there.

As he waited for her to dress, Meric took a moment to quickly check over the men in the showers, just to insure that Juuzou hadn't cut one of them just to prove that they can't take as much pain as he. Assured that they were safe and finished, he herded them into the men's side of the dressing tent to change into the set costumes for their new roles. Jules, the cotton candy booth operator, had come to help at The Ringmaster's request. He had already set out everyone's costumes and took over as Meric returned to the main room to await of his friend.

"So, do I look alright? Did I get it right?"

Meric turned with a sigh. Aveline looked just as lovely as ever. It made him feel good that the devastating things the Ringmaster has done to her, didn't destroy her spirit. She still sparkled like her eyes use to. "No, you've dressed yourself quite well... Just...one little thing..." Stepping to her side, Meric mumbled lightly to himself as he retied one of the ribbons that decorated her shoulder. "There, that's better."

Giving her his arm, he followed her as she wobbled slightly to her chair once more. Meric frowned heavily at this. He honestly wanted to ask The Ringmaster to allow Aveline to sit out practice tonight, but he knew that might be a poor move on his part that'll effect them both. So, he held his tongue. Once she was settled, Meric cleared his throat softly, "If you're well, Aveline, I shall have to leave you for a moment to prepare the rest..."

"Meric, I'm sorry to keep asking things of you, but you know you're my closest companion." She said with a smile. "But do you think you could pull my hair into a high ponytail?"

A sudden dark shadow suddenly covered Meric's face and his humble smile faded into a devious grimace. A hand slowly raised towards her hair, lifting a silky strand to watch it slowly slip through his fingers. "Oh...that's not a problem at all." His tone was still present, but the lack of life and energy were also. Reaching for the table, he carefully took her brush and a ribbon. "Can't look too unkempt before The Ringmaster, now can we?"

Staring at their reflections in the mirror before them, Meric's mind had split in two - The Ringmaster watched with a chuckle at all the cruel things he could do right about then - drag the fallen angel by that ponytail he now held in Meric's hand... Chop it off at the scalp and feed it to her... All of that for disobedience - use her as an example even to the younger crew he'd recently picked up....

NO...No....

Meric jerked his head back, attempting to move himself away from Aveline. Those other thoughts in his head...the laughter; he knew The Ringmaster had returned and considered this sweet sight just right for his manipulation. The ideas he heard coming from his master sickened him, as they always did, and - as always - he didn't want nothing to do with it. But, he is his master's hands and feet when he doesn't wish to be seen. Therefore, Meric tried to fight off the urge to pul Aveline's hair.

Without alarming her, Meric dropped her brush and soon her hair. Then, before anyone or anything could stop him, Meric buried the black claws that were slowly growing from his fingertips into his left forearm. With heavy, painful steps, he backed away, sucking in air to hold back from screaming. The sounds of The Ringmaster's jolly squeals were giving him a headache. Meric figured his master just loved it when he self-mutilated himself to avoid doing what he desired. It was the only way he can regain the tiny portion of himself that hasn't been stolen... But, it wasn't enough... If The Ringmaster was upset at him for stopping himself from hurting Aveline, then he'll do something worse to insure Meric had no other choice.
