If one took their time, they could trace his lineage back to the time of Jesus. God created man, yes, but the Devil created the vampire. Humans weren't the only things walking on the Earth. Oh, the things his eyes have seen, the things he has learned from slipping deep into the shadow. Back in those times, he was the thing of nightmares, the sinister smile someone would see on another person's face.

At least, that was Averey's outlook since he was changed at the age of 22 at Beer-Lahai-roi or the well of him that liveth and seeth me. Ever since the woman, Hagar, met the Lord Jesus Christ, he had gone there in hopes of catching a glimpse of the Savior. One night, he stayed at the well a little too long, allowed it to get a little too dark. At that moment, everything changed.

Averey never came home the next morning, just left to struggle in silence in a cave where his 'parent' had left him. Pain shot through every vein, every muscle and every ligament in his body. His brain felt as if it was going to push its way through his ears. In the beginning, his heart felt as if it was going to crack every rib in his chest, but it now cooled his body as it slowed down then faded to a stop. For a split second he couldn't breathe, lungs feeling as if they had just shriveled into grapes that had been left to fester in the sun.

He didn't know what time it was, but the sun was high in the sky and burned his retinas. Groaning, he held a hand over his eyes and leaned against the opening of the cave. Eventually, his hand slid from his eyes to one of his ears because every sound that struck his eardrum vibrated his whole body. Why was this happening? The only thing he could see were two scars on his inner wrist that looked like the fangs of the snake just bigger.

After a moment of adjusting, he figured he should go home to his family because they were probably worried about him, but he doubted his previous thoughts when he got to the outskirts of his humble home and saw another man with his family. In the distance, he saw a crudely fashioned cross and instantly knew what it meant… he was dead in their minds.

Years had gone by and now it was the time of knights, princes and princesses, lord and ladies. Averey was no exception. People didn't know he existed but if he ever happened to be seen he introduced himself Lord Averey Cantrell. Little did society know that he had resided around them for more than a lifetime, in a castle everyone thought was in ruins. This castle was filled with men and woman he had changed. The men serving as cooks and what maintenance there was and the women served… well.. Heh. They served Averey in whatever way he desired.

After a few years of not changing someone, he began to get restless. Dressing in a cloak and the clothes of a hunter, he left his castle and went from well to well in every district of the surround counties. At last! He found a woman that suited him. Within a moment, he came up behind her and breathed softly against her neck, making her hair twitch.

"Hello ma'am," he whispered coarsely into her ear, his accent matching those of the ones around him. "If you do not mind, love…"

With that, he gripped her wrist tightly in his hands and brought it to his lips, glancing up at her with pale blue eyes before digging his teeth in to her vein, draining her enough so she wouldn't put up a fight. Once back in his castle, he tossed her in the 'recovery room'. He hadn't changed her quite yet, feeling the need to just toy with her. Averey ordered some maids to tend to the girl.

" 'ello lass," a maid whispered softly. " My name is Faylinn, ma'am." It was a young girl about 17. Softly, she dabbed a wet cloth against the bite mark on her wrist. "I am 'ere to take care of you, ma'am." With a nod, she stood back up and left the room. "I will be back."

The day was finally coming to an end in the land of Rennan which meant it was time to finish for the day and retreat to the safety of the indoors. However, for the young Maven her day was not ended yet. Being one of few children in her family it meant there was less people to spread the duties around. While a normal female he age might hardly ever leave the house and solely tended to sewing and cooking, she worked outside alongside her father and brother. She knew how to get her hands dirty and wasn't afraid of hard work. Occasionally she would help her mother attend to the house, but most of her chores consisted of taking care of the cows and sheep as well as other miscellaneous work that needed to be done.

To her dismay it turned out that they had run out of water and she needed to take the walk to town in order to go to the well. It was a pain staking job, yet someone needed to do it. Once she brought the cows back into the barn and made sure there was enough hay and feed to go around it was already beginning to darken outside. Everyone knew it was dangerous to be out past nightfall and few dared to walk the streets. Rumors of vampires were always passing amongst the villagers and legends had been passed down throughout the centuries. Maven on the other hand believed all of these rumors to be just that: rumors. She never considered the silly stories to be true and was not about to let them get in the way of her finishing what needed to be done.

The young maiden went into the house for a short moment to give her mother a quick kiss and to pick up the bucket which they used to fetch the water. It was hefty, however it was nothing she couldn't handle. With a small sigh she watched the sky as the sun slowly began to move closer to the horizon, the clouds turning brilliant shades of orange, red, and purple. It was a sight she never grew tired of seeing and looked forward to each day. Maven enjoyed a small breeze as it rolled by, allowing it to tussle the tresses of hair which had come loose from her braid during the hard day's work. Just as darkness began to fall over the plains the town well finally came into sight and her steps quickened eagerly.

Once she reached her destination she took a moment to gaze down into the dark waters as the bottom of the rounded stone walls. Heaving the bucket up onto the hook, she carefully began to lower it towards the water. An eerie air soon fell over her and she felt goosebumps forming along her arms and she suddenly didn't feel as...safe. Her dark gaze looked around wearily, suddenly feeling heavy breath against her shoulder. In a panic she spun around to see a man much taller than herself looking down at her.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Maven tried to keep her voice from shaking as the man's eyes almost seemed to glow. She gasped when her wrist was suddenly grabbed, trying desperately to pull away, however it was too late. Her world was getting dark fast before she even had a chance to react.

Complete darkness

It felt as though she had been asleep for years, her body feeling more fatigued than she had ever experienced. Her head throbbed painfully as he eyes weakly began to flicker open. Shadowy figures were all she could make out at first, but soon they began to grow clearer.

"Where am I...?" Maven barely managed to speak, her eyes falling on a young woman who she realized was holding her wrist and dabbing it with something. But...she could barely feel anything. Before she could ask any further questions the woman left her side and she suddenly began to feel panic washing over her once more. What little energy she had left she attempted to sit up, however she only succeeded in rolling herself from where she had been lying and falling onto the hard floor below. She cried out in pain as her head collided onto the ground. She weakly muttered slowly as she reached up to hold the throbbing area at the back of her head.

Faylinn had gone into the kitchen to get something for the girl to eat. She knew what it felt like to be drained to an inch of life. At last! She found some bread then quickly ran back up to the girl's room only to find her on the ground, holding her head.

"Oh, Lass!" She dropped the plate, letting it crash against the ground as she rushed over to her. " Ma'am you should not try to move!" With a strength that would normally be beyond an average woman, she picked up the girl and set her back in bed. "Please relax, miss." Softly, the maid tucked the blanket around her then skittered over to the dropped plate and bread. "Now, please, do not move." Once again, Faylinn disappeared.

Averey heard the crash and looked at the ceiling above him. Why? Well, he didn't exactly know. It wasn't like he could see through the floor. Anyway, he groaned softly know it was the girl who had fallen since he knew Faylinn wasn't going to throw around the new girl. Shoving himself out of his chair, he strode calmly through the hall, maids moving out of his way and bowing their heads slightly. Faylinn rushed passed him, murmuring something, before he entered the room.

He didn't rush; there was no panic in his step. Averey just clasped his hands behind his back and strolled over to the end of the bed. His face stayed stone cold, lips in a straight line and eyes emotionless. She obviously was still alive, but he knew that. Working the muscles in his jaw, he glanced down over her covered body. This is going to be an entertaining female.

"I do not want you to struggle," he said flatly and straightened out the blanket around the corner of the bed before standing straight up. "You have no reason to fret. "

For a moment, he stopped talking and just stared at her. If he didn't want to talk, he didn't have to, but he probably should allow the girl some questions, she was, after all, kidnapped from her home. There was no doubt that she was scared, but he didn't feel sympathy for her since she was going to aid him in his own sick amusement.

Faylinn came back in and stopped at the door, looking at the floor as not to be rude to her master.

"Faylinn, bring me that chair." He nodded his head towards the corner. "Place is next to her bed."

The little maid did just as he said then left the room. Remaining silent, he settled in the chair and crossed his legs at the knee, relaxed each arm on one are of the chair. Averey pursed his lips, rubbed his thumb and forefinger together on his right hand. After clearing his throat and running his tongue over his teeth, he asked on simple thing.

"Do you have any questions?"

She watched as the maid from earlier came to her side, the woman's name already gone from her memory. She felt herself rise off the ground and back to where she started. If it had been any other day, Maven would have questioned how the woman was able to lift her so easily, but right now she was in no condition to question anything out of why she was here and how she was going to get back home. The thought of her family made her shiver in worry—will I ever see them again?

As badly as Maven wanted to try to get up again she knew it wasn't wise and heeded the words of her caretaker. She decided she would give herself time to recover before making her escape—she surely wasn't too far from home and could find her way back. She hadn't journeyed the lands much but she surely remembered enough from the few travels she had taken.

After a while, her eyes had closed once more as she daydreamed about being back home in her own bed when suddenly she felt the same, cold presence from the well. Maven's eyes shot open to see the same man looking down at her and her eyes widened in fear, her body weakly shying from him as his hands drew close only to readjust the sheets. It spared her relief only for a moment. His frigid gaze chilled her to the very core, her instinct to scream and run, however that was not going to be possible. All she could do was stare back, her eyes frightened and any words she might have spoken gone completely. His stare finally ceased as he ordered her caretaker to bring him a chair and the woman wasted no time in doing so. Maven watched as he settled into the seat. Were his teeth….. She reflected to herself as she thought she spotted a long, pointed fang. No, she had to be seeing things.

"Why…am I here." Maven managed to speak, her body aching—perhaps from the fall or maybe the man had done something to her. What if he had poisoned her with some sort of paralyzing substance? Or perhaps she had been infected with some kind of ailment. Suddenly her gaze caught a small glimpse of her wrist which the woman had been tending to earlier. Two distinct puncture marks stared back at her and that was when she realized she was now living exactly what she had believe to be rumors and tales to scare children into staying inside when night fell. No, this is a dream—a very…real dream. Surely she would wake up soon and find herself home and everyone else fast asleep in their own cots, a faint glow left from the embers which would slowly begin to fade.

"Who are you?" For the time being she knew she needed to stay strong and not give in so easily to fear. It was one of the many lessons her father had taught her: remain strong in the faces of your enemies and fears.

"Mmm… why are you here..." He allowed his voice to fade into silence as he stared at the window as if the girl had just disappeared. It was quiet for a moment longer until he took in a quick breath and leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knee and clasping his hands in front of him. "You are here because you were at a well during the wrong time of day. You are here because I decided, on a whim of course, that I needed new amusement."

With that, he leaned back in his seat again, eyeing the girl. There was no feeling in his eyes; if he hadn't just talked then one would have assumed he was a statue. After the girl asked who he was he stood and walked over to the window, rocking back on his heels. Did she really need to know who he was? Quickly, he looked back at her, finally answering her question.

"Who I am is of no concern to you at the moment." His voice was sharp, almost fierce as he continued. "You are here for my own amusement, a toy if you prefer that definition." Turning on his heel, he went back to the foot of the bed where had been standing earlier. "Of course, you will only be used for my own devices once you have gotten well which will be..." Averey paused and looked up at the ceiling as he thought. "Tomorrow, but you are strong; I hear it."

Feeling as if he had done enough talking, he left without saying another word. Faylinn entered soon after he left and rush over to the side of bed.

"Do not let Lord Averey scare you, lass." She set a plate on the side table with some fruit. "You need to eat ma'am." Faylinn then settled on the chair Averey had left, her hands resting lightly in her lap as she looked over the girl with a concerned face.

Faylinn is the epitome of concern. Living around Averey she had to be and even though Averey would never truly admit it, he favored Faylinn out of all the other woman he had around his castle. But Faylinn has a downfall... she is madly in love with her master, worships the ground he walks on but has always been too scared to admit it. Why should she admit something like that to a man who tosses women to the side whenever he wants? He would only take her love with a grain of salt anyway since he is out for his own gain, for his own pleasure. Faylinn sighed and looked down at her hands, fiddling with her finger nails. She knew that Averey already viewed the girl in this bed differently and she didn't know why.

His voice almost carried a chill with it that shook her to the core. She moved slightly as he leaned towards her, her eyes only starting but she did not dare speak. Sh was here only because she had made the foolish decision to go to the well. What a fool she had been for thinking nothing would become of her. She had done it before, so her instincts had become skewed at what came with nightfall. She could as least be thankful that she was still alive, however would she stay that way? Her mind went out to her family who were probably out looking for her, putting themselves in danger. She couldn't bear the thought of them getting harmed at her expense.

She watched as the man stood from his seat, her eyes catching his as he stared at her with his own frigid orbs. She had not expected to find out who she was. Maven was only concerned with escaping, however she would have to plan carefully and meticulously. She would need to figure out the layout of where she was and find the best escape route--if there even was one. A toy...so that as what she was for him, not that she had expected anything less from his demeanor. She looked away, seeing the maid from earlier standing not too far away. Was she here under his rule as well? Was she the only one? How could someone that seemed so kind be on the side of someone so cruel? Her attention immediately went back to him as he began to speak once more. Tomorrow...

Maven felt frozen as the man left, her fingers clutching to the blanket that was over her. She looked to the young woman as she came back to her side.
"What...will become of me tomorrow?" Her voice was shaky and her eyes fearful as she looked to the woman, who almost seemed to carry a sadness in her own gaze. Maven was in mood to eat and she felt she might purge if she even tried. Her stomach was twisting itself into knots and her mind was a blur with possibilities of her fate. So many questions were now coming to her, but she couldn't get any of them out. She couldn't tell anyone of her desire and plot to run...if she lived long enough to do so. So was on her own, and she had never felt so frightened and lonely.

"Tomorrow?" At first Faylinn gave the girl a confused look. How should she know what was.... ohh. She gave a knowing nod then tried to figure out the exact way to put it. Averey would most likely assert his dominance over the girl, making her do busy work around his castle. It wouldn't be the simple type of busy work either. The master would send Maven to clean out the laundry pots, scrape off dishes that had been crusted with food, and whatever else grotesque chore Averey could ask of her. Faylinn didn't want to sugarcoat what would happen, but she also didn't want to tell her the complete truth. "Oh, the master will just have you do busy work around the castle." That answer worked, hopefully. "Now, Miss, you need your rest. There is fruit next to you and if you need me, there is a bell by the fruit you can just ring. Please, sleep well."

With that, Faylinn left the room and went to Averey's to try and beg him to not treat the girl to roughly. By now, Averey was used to her concern and had actually prepared for it by setting up two chairs by the fire, a small table in the middle of them that held two goblets of wine. He was already seated in one chair, positioned much like he was earlier with his arms stretched along the length of the chair's arms.

The door open, Faylinn rushed in, the door closed.

"Averey, plea-"

"Please do not be to harsh the young girl, Averey. She is still so scared and does not need to be worked so hard. At least give her tasks that would not be like torture," Averey said in a light, teasing voice as he motioned for her to sit down. "My dearest Faylinn, you allow yourself to be burden with concerns that are nor your own." He grabbed the wine, took a sip then continued,"the girl shall not have special treatment. Why should she be treated different than the others I have taken before her."

"But, Averey, you have already been treating that girl differently! You came in her room and sat next to her!" Faylinn shrieked, refusing to sit down as she paced back and forth in front of him. "You did not even give me that privilege."

"I uh..." He cleared his throat, took a sip of wine then stared into the fire. Faylinn had just made a decent point. Was he going to tell her that? Not at all; it would hurt his pride to much. Instead, his eyes narrowed to the fire, face went blank. "Faylinn," Averey said flatly, the girl is to be treated like the rest of them. Leave me! Go to your own quarters."

The little maid huffed then rushed out, doing what the master said. Morning came and Faylinn showed up in Maven's room with a maid outfit much like her own. She had to get the girl ready as fast as she could and started on the chores.

"Lass," Faylinn said softly, dropping the clothes on the bed. "You need to get up and change into the dress I just put on your bed. I have the list of chores the master has given you to complete." She turned her back to the girl to give her some privacy. "I am to be the one to guide you around the castle. Your first chore is to clean the laundry cauldrons of the soap scum."

Faylinn waited for the girl to dress then led her to the laundry room and handing her the supplies she would need. [/dash]
