If one took their time, they could trace his lineage back to the time of Jesus. God created man, yes, but the Devil created the vampire. Humans weren't the only things walking on the Earth. Oh, the things his eyes have seen, the things he has learned from slipping deep into the shadow. Back in those times, he was the thing of nightmares, the sinister smile someone would see on another person's face.
At least, that was Averey's outlook since he was changed at the age of 22 at Beer-Lahai-roi or the well of him that liveth and seeth me. Ever since the woman, Hagar, met the Lord Jesus Christ, he had gone there in hopes of catching a glimpse of the Savior. One night, he stayed at the well a little too long, allowed it to get a little too dark. At that moment, everything changed.
Averey never came home the next morning, just left to struggle in silence in a cave where his 'parent' had left him. Pain shot through every vein, every muscle and every ligament in his body. His brain felt as if it was going to push its way through his ears. In the beginning, his heart felt as if it was going to crack every rib in his chest, but it now cooled his body as it slowed down then faded to a stop. For a split second he couldn't breathe, lungs feeling as if they had just shriveled into grapes that had been left to fester in the sun.
He didn't know what time it was, but the sun was high in the sky and burned his retinas. Groaning, he held a hand over his eyes and leaned against the opening of the cave. Eventually, his hand slid from his eyes to one of his ears because every sound that struck his eardrum vibrated his whole body. Why was this happening? The only thing he could see were two scars on his inner wrist that looked like the fangs of the snake just bigger.
After a moment of adjusting, he figured he should go home to his family because they were probably worried about him, but he doubted his previous thoughts when he got to the outskirts of his humble home and saw another man with his family. In the distance, he saw a crudely fashioned cross and instantly knew what it meant… he was dead in their minds.
Years had gone by and now it was the time of knights, princes and princesses, lord and ladies. Averey was no exception. People didn't know he existed but if he ever happened to be seen he introduced himself Lord Averey Cantrell. Little did society know that he had resided around them for more than a lifetime, in a castle everyone thought was in ruins. This castle was filled with men and woman he had changed. The men serving as cooks and what maintenance there was and the women served… well.. Heh. They served Averey in whatever way he desired.
After a few years of not changing someone, he began to get restless. Dressing in a cloak and the clothes of a hunter, he left his castle and went from well to well in every district of the surround counties. At last! He found a woman that suited him. Within a moment, he came up behind her and breathed softly against her neck, making her hair twitch.
"Hello ma'am," he whispered coarsely into her ear, his accent matching those of the ones around him. "If you do not mind, love…"
With that, he gripped her wrist tightly in his hands and brought it to his lips, glancing up at her with pale blue eyes before digging his teeth in to her vein, draining her enough so she wouldn't put up a fight. Once back in his castle, he tossed her in the 'recovery room'. He hadn't changed her quite yet, feeling the need to just toy with her. Averey ordered some maids to tend to the girl.
" 'ello lass," a maid whispered softly. " My name is Faylinn, ma'am." It was a young girl about 17. Softly, she dabbed a wet cloth against the bite mark on her wrist. "I am 'ere to take care of you, ma'am." With a nod, she stood back up and left the room. "I will be back."
