The Beasts of Civilization

"There is a difference?" Kharg asked when told he was a guide and not a babysitter. The last time he checked, the two were almost synonymous. But if it wasn't about pride to her human roots that prevented her from agreeing with the ploy then ...

He inclined his head toward her, a gesture Wren knew meant he was conceding. "Aye, verra well, lass. So it is no' a matter o' pride. I will go with what ye decide." He didn't have much of a choice, unless he resorted to the idea of getting some rope and locking her in a closet somewhere. This would just make his job a bit more of a challenge; using brute force on the nobles and their lackeys without making it seem threatening. Calabrians were notorious for responding instinctively to threats.

Kharg lifted his head and looked at the Repense. "Ye willna be able to push her on this one. But perhaps we all need some rest and the lass may be hungry."

Cat found Mother where he had left her, chatting with a young wolf noble. He slipped in, around the sides of the room, hearing snips of conversation. Most of what he heard had to do with the Repense's display with the fleshy. He drew closer to Mother and waited patiently.

The wolf noble appeared to be deep into the conversation he was having with Sam. "My lady, that is perfectly priceless!" he said with a laugh. They were chatting about business exploits and she was giving him a humorous account of an old Calabrian who hadn't been able to pay his rent so she had done the only thing she could do to cut her losses and booted him out of the only home he had.
