The Always Snow

Years ago, a meteorite crashed into Earth's northern ice cap. The impact sent a shock wave across the globe and heralded the dawn of a new ice age. But the cold was not the only change brought about. Unknown material in the meteorite caused rapid mutations in any life that survived. Humans developed animal characteristics, as well as strange powers. The degree to which they changed varied, from minor, barely visible enhancements to near complete transformations. Now they must fight daily to survive, and there is constant danger. Will they build themselves a new haven in the Snow, seek out the legends of a warmer land, or choose a final fate for themselves and the rest of humankind?

First Quarters include the traditional human range. They look like any other person you'd meet, and have little to no enhanced abilities.
Second Quarters start to become more visibly like the animal that they share traits with, and have more of the characteristics and abilities.
Third Quarters are more animal than human, often with altered bone structure, fur and claws. They have some of the strongest magic while still retaining ties to humanity.
Last Quarters are almost indistinguishable from an animal. These people (in the general sense of the word) are hostile to anyone but their own.

In the Snow, you might find children with wolf fangs, or old men with tails, paws and fur. Animals grew larger, more intelligent, and deadlier. In the chaos that followed, three groups emerged.

The Hares

Civilians and the most plentiful people. They live in large warrens, and have big families. Twins, triplets and even quadruplets are not uncommon among the fertile Hares, but unfortunately, many do not make it to adulthood. They are generally industrious, timid and soft-spoken and take comfort in the presence of others. They are light on their feet, and attack with well-placed kicks, punches and bites.
Usually seen physical characteristics include thick, soft, brown or black hair, shorter builds, and dark eyes, as well as skin that ranges in tone from very pale to fawn colored. Occasionally, there are albino Hares, with all-white hair and skin, and pink or red eyes.
Hares form the largest part of society among the Snow, and take on any job necessary for survival. They work on farming the few plants that grow in the cold, spinning, weaving and sewing, curing hides and furs for clothing. They work with and for the wolves, providing them with supplies and services, and in exchange are kept safe and well-fed. Most often though, they are tunnelers. They dig out homes in the thick snow and ice. Their overall magic is general, and varies between individuals.

The Wolves

Warriors who form packs. Groups of up to twenty will make a pack, with an Alpha and second-in-command Beta. Children are precious, and the whole pack cares for them, although they are usually the offspring of the Alpha. They are aggressive, but team players, and will sacrifice themselves for the good of the pack. There is no such thing as a lone wolf, at least not for long. In the Snow, it is work together or die. Wolves fight with swords and spears, as well as using their sheer strength and fangs.
Their hair ranges from black to silver, brown and red. They have a wide variety of eye colors, but the most common is gold. They have the tallest forms of all people, with thick, strong bones.
They hunt for food, and protect the Hares from the many dangers of the Snow, particularly the Ice Worms. In exchange, the Hares provide them with clothing and shelter. Within a pack, there is often a form of telepathy. They have particularly strong healing powers, as well as moon magic.

The Foxes

Rogue folk, they are rarely seen in groups of more than two. They share traits with both the Wolves and the Hares. Clever, with quick tongues and quick feet. They fight with small blades and anything else they can find. They have small families, or no family at all.
Their eyes range from yellow to brown. They often have thin, lithe bodies, sometimes smaller than those of Hares. They have hair colors of brown, black and red.
Scavengers, they inhabit abandoned Hare tunnels and collect leftovers from the Wolves. They have specialized magic that allows them to turn invisible and otherwise shift form, as well as fire magic.

Notes about Foxes, Wolves and Hares. In addition to the appearances listed, they also can be seen to have the winter coat of their arctic counterparts. The generally acknowledged age of adulthood is 15.

The Snow

Nightly temperatures drop to -40 °F and colder, and the day is rarely above freezing. Dark months alternate with light months, where there is no true night, or no true day.The land is nearly all covered in snow, and water is buried under ice. Tundra provides meager plant life. Mountains are the only landmarks.

Muskox, caribou, ermines, squirrels and lemming live on the tundra, and are hunted for food.

The number of ice worms on a single coast is many times that of the human population. They used to be small creatures that fed on algae. Now they are big, and just get bigger with time. An average worm is over three feet long at birth. They are only begin to freeze at 19 degrees Fahrenheit, but can with stand much more drastic chills the larger they get. At 41 degrees Fahrenheit they begin to literally melt, but just as with the cold, the larger they are, the more heat they can take. They feed on anything that moves, including people.

Polar Bears roam the Snow, and have developed some communications with humans. That does not prevent them from attacking and eating them if they are hungry.

Teams of sled dogs are used for transportation, mainly by the Wolves. Some dogs are capable of speech, and are considered to be companions instead of service animals.

(I will be adding more to this.)

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History:
When Moa Conleth became pregnant, she sought shelter in a nearby warren. She stayed there until Saga was four. Her spirit had been broken, and she
went mad when Saga started to resemble her father. She took the girl out into the Snow, and scraped an existence out for the both of them. She would have fits and tried to kill Saga many times, only to later beg forgiveness. When the girl turned 11, she found the warren where she had been born. She arranged for her mother to be taken care of, and to live in the safety of the Hares' tunnels. She paid for their "rent" any way she had to, and did her best to keep her mother happy. Moa continued to attack her in moments of rage, but Saga had learned how to better avoid injury. She would wait out the spells in the cold Snow. When she came back, she would be given affection and apologies. By the time she turned 15, though, the spells were coming so frequently that she was forced to find somewhere else to live.

Present Life:
Saga still visits her mother, but their time is always brief. She makes sure to bring something of value with her to pay the Hares. She lives in abandoned tunnels and old ice-worm holes, keeping one step ahead of death.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History: Lissanne was the last child born to her mother, a First Quarter, and her father, Gar, a Third Quarter. Her mother died soon after giving birth to Lissa from complications during delivery. Although this was a sad day for her family, her birth was celebrated by the pack because she bore the crescent marking that appeared once a generation to designate who would be the pack's next shaman. However, even though her birth was heralded as a blessing for the pack, it immediately began a series of political deals and grabs for power that would fill the early years of her life with confusion and violence.

Because a shaman's family could potentially gain considerable power within the pack, and because the current alpha was getting older, some members of the tribe expected her father to try and seize the position of alpha for himself while others began maneuvering to place themselves in charge. Lissa's family tried to protect her from all of this as much as they could, but she was still aware as a child that people saw her as a means of acquiring power. Even though much of her time was spent being trained and prepared for her future duties by the then current shaman, not even that could serve as a safe haven for her. The elderly male shaman, a Third Quarter, was cruel to Lissa and told her she would never have enough power to be a good shaman because she was only a Second Quarter. Determined to prove him wrong and show everyone else that she was her own person and not a prize to be fought over, she threw herself into her training from the time she was six until her eighteenth year.

It was then that the plans put in motion from the day of her birth came together. The current alpha grew ill and died, and the senior male members of the pack began making their plays to seize power. There were several fights to the death to determine supremacy, and her father managed to survive several of them until only one rival remained and it seemed that he would soon finally become the new alpha. Then, one night he was murdered in his sleep and the entire pack was consumed by chaos. Shocked and angered by the cowardice of the act, the remaining members of the pack called for a final fight to avenge Gar's death and preserve peace.

Lissa's older brother Caeran was the only male who could fight for their family's honor, and so he faced his father's rival in mortal combat. He emerged as the victor, heavily scarred despite Lissa's attempts to heal him afterward, and was proclaimed the new alpha. Taking this as a sign from the spirits, the shaman blessed Lissa as his succesor and went off into the wilderness to die so as not to be a burden to the pack. From that day on, Lissanne served as shaman to her tribe, helping her brother protect their people and serving as his spiritual advisor.

Present Life: Lissanne has served as shaman for a few years now, and although some members of the tribe still doubt her abilities, she is widely considered to be one of the best they have had in recent memory. She faithfully works to earn the trust of her people and to please their spirit protectors.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History: When the two were young, they were shunted back and forth between hare-holes as foster children. While there were a few who treated them kindly, even more pushed them away because of them being two foxes. The day they turned 15, they weren't eligible for the same kind of care they were when they were children. The fact that Fiagi's Shadowshimmer power made its first appearance then didn't help. The twins had been making a very good impression on some first quarter hares that had taken them in when Fi started to blink in and out of existence before their eyes. The hares didn't have any powers of their own so they shoved the pair out of their home and onto the street where they would spend their time stealing, thieving and robbing.

One day, the two were dashing through the old tunnels having escaped their latest victim. Chaill turned around and started to laugh at Fiagi
.

She didn't see the worm until it was too late.

Present life: Hunting, stealing, eating, drinking. Whatever keeps him alive.

GENERAL CHARACTER STATISTICS

Character Name: Tommas Benedijo

Gender:
Male

Species/Race:
Hare

Quarter:
Third

29

Protector

He considers all those he protects in his species and pack his family.
More: Tommas's real family migrated far, far away and he never reconnected with them. He is a very kind hearted soul that grows quickly attached to his friends and fellow pack. He is infertile, and he is afraid to be alone.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

whiteid11.png

Height: 5'0

Hair: White

Eyes: Red

Distinguishing Marks: Because he is in his third quarter, his prominent features are his ears and tufts of fur hidden under his large checkered coat and ofcourse his large feet, white hair, and red eyes.

General Appearance: Tommas is rather short, as Hares usually are, but his most unique features are that of his hair color and eye color along with his pale skin. Tommas is an albino Hare, a rare breed, and proud of it. He is fascinated with his species and flaunts it. He usually likes wearing colorful and vibrant clothing, especially layers of it to not only keep control of his fur growth, but also to stay warm in extreme cold.

Animal Characteristics: Tommas constantly tries to file his nails, as they grow extremely fast. His feet are his greatest asset, without his specially formed shoes he can run at great speeds and kick much faster when he needs to. With his shoes on, his abilities to do so lessen and he feels more human. His fur is hidden well by his clothing, but his ears are proudly shown.

Strengths:
His speed, large feet and nimble bone structure. Large ears for increased hearing abilities and natural caution.

Weaknesses:
His short height and lack of natural sharpened claws or primal skills. More of a runner than a fighter.

More:
Tommas would rather hunt with his pack if he ever needed to hunt, than alone. He'd always choose to stay back at home with the rest of his kind to protect them, heal them, and nourish them, than to hunt or fight at all. he only fights when there is no other option.

MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

Allies: Any of the Hares.

Enemies:
Anyone or anything that seems threatening to his kind.

Current Goal/Purpose:
To protect those he cares about, and to stay alive at all costs without leaving a fellow Hare behind.

Aspirations:
To become a master of medicine and have a true family of his own one day.

Hobbies:
Alchemy, Herbal Remedy, Cooking, Cleaning, Reading, Making Pocket Watches, and Time Keeping.

Likes:
Pocket Watches, Warm Places, Friendship, and Hearty Meals.

Dislikes:
Violence, Mischief, Things Out of Order, and Bad Food.

Talents:
A natural at running, very good at tinkering with technology and fixing things, a wonderful healer, displays a big heart.

Inabilities:
Killing of any kind. Killing anyone or anything is very tough for Tommas. He'd prefer knocking one out if it came to it, than killing.

Fears:
Death, Starvation, Getting Lost, and Being Alone.

General Personality:
Tommas is generally very playful, very intelligent, and extremely compassionate. This is someone who legitamately wears his heart on his sleeve and exudes kindness. He loves learning new things, and educating the less fortunate. He also loves tinkering and fixing things as well as healing and helping others. He is very much a team player and will do what it takes to make sure everyone around him is safe, including himself, from harm's way.

Inner Personality: Inside Tommas is a natural born and cold hearted warrior. He has the skills and knows what it takes to kill and survive in harsh battles, but refuses to show this side to anyone else. Last time he did, many were killed and he almost couldn't stop himself from more violence. It was his pack that saved him from complete insanity.

Fondest Memory: Watching his closest family leaving him in the cold, alone, inside their hollow rabbit hole after shaking in fear from an attack. This was long ago when the Wolves hunted the Hares for game, but things were different now. Although things are different, he will never forget that feeling of abandonment.

Biggest Regret:
Making no, to little effort, to relocate his family.

Secret:
Tommas has killed before, and he keeps that a deep secret to be locked away for eternity.

More:
Tommas cannot be easily persuaded. He is stubborn when it comes to decisions, and he truly wants to keep the high standards of morals he has without argument. He is very meticulous when it comes to his routine of survival.

SPECIALTY CHARACTERISTICS

Special Items: A golden pocket watch that tells universal time. It is the only watch of its kind and he takes very good care of it. He cleans it and keeps it running every day.

Weapons:
Although he is non-violent, he does posses a weapon from his childhood but he never uses it. It is a magical scepter known as Krytos that has been passed down through his family for generations. It has the ability to form mighty wind magic and call storms. The wind magic is an ancient power that has complete control over weather. Depending on the weather, the wind currents, and climate, the scepter can either be very effective, or very useless. It can only be used to call mighty storms and dangerous elements such as hurricanes and twisters if the wind around Tommas reaches high enough speeds, and in rare occasions, the scepter can take a mind of its own and sense emergency dangers, thus giving a higher chance or effectiveness. Tommas is afraid to use it because of the mighty power behind it. He believes it is cursed and refuses to touch it.

Magics:
Alchemy. Tommas can use the power of plants and the brush beneath him and around him to form immense potions and concoctions that can grant him varied effects. Depending on the plant types and the amount of ingredients, Tommas's alchemy can vary in power. From the ability to fill him with poisonous and cursed magic, to the ability of stronger endurance, faster speed, or even better senses. The outcomes of this potion mastery can be random and unprecedented. Any magic can be formed from Tommas's alchemy, there are only few magic potions Tommas remembers to craft by heart. The downside is, he needs many resources to form these ancient creations. There have been very rare occasions that Tommas has used his natural magic and spirit, to create different variations of attacks and tactics which allowed him to summon plants and the elements of the ground beneath him, but he hasn't practiced such sacred art in ages.

More:
Tommas was never a fan of magic, but he grew to love alchemy. He only ever prefers to use his alchemist abilities to heal, he uses his offensive knowledge of alchemy only under emergency situations.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History: Tommas's family left him at a very young age. They abandoned him after their home was ravaged by a rebel and starving pack of Wolves. Long ago the Hares were free game to Wolves and other predators in The Snow and Tommas was terrified of almost everyone and everything. He was very much a coward. He hid and dug himself in a secondary hole just behind their home as the Wolves chased after his fleeing family. He never saw them again. After a few hours of hiding, Tommas leaves his hole to find himself alone and terrified at a young age.

Walking towards a familiar hunting ground where his parents often scoured for food Tommas hoped to find something to eat. On the way there two figures approached him in the night. From far away they appeared scary and dangerous, but he was too weak to run and too hungry to not take the risk. He kept walking. Finally, when he got close enough the figures were seen better. They were fellow Hares like him and wondered what he was doing all alone. But these Hares weren't any ordinary Hares, they were warriors. Equipped with belts of wooden weaponry and built far more muscular in size and stature than many of the other Hares Tommas ran into.

Tommas explained his situation and these Hares took him in. They taught him the way of battle and how to gather food. Tommas experienced this and felt invigorated gathering as much food as possible. But there were rare instances growing up with these two other Hares that Tommas had no choice but to express his battle instincts. Predators and large beasts tried to attack them, and for the first time ever, Tommas was taught to kill, and killed one of the mighty predators with his fighting technique.

Ever since Tommas swore he would never do it again. The two elder Hares that took him in explained that it wasn't for everyone and gave Tommas locations of other packs and families of their kind that he could stay with and protect if the rogue style of survival didn't suit him. Tommas thanked them, and journeyed his way to these larger and more needy families now becoming a drifter from family to family to help those that seek it through healing and remedial practices. He hopes to never again have to engage in the dangers and horror of murder and battle.

Present Life: Tommas is happily living with neighboring families and others of his species healing the wounded and protecting the weak. He is content in his way of life and his acts of kindness, and does not wish for it to change. If someone were to try and change his way of life, anything from a nasty argument to a complete mental breakdown could take place. Physical boundaries could even be crossed depending on the severity.

Special Historic Notes:
Tommas has now been helping his kind for years safely and effectively. He is experienced in medicine, cooking, alchemy, wisdom, survival, and the general necessities of The Snow. He has battle experience if needed.

Are there still spots open for this... I want to join... T_T

There will always be a place for Batman.

Phazaeke, Wallflower, awesome characters!

Knight Thaniel, can you explain a bit more about Tommas's alchemy and his staff?

Ooh, ooh! Pick me! I'm not Batman, and I'm nowhere near that awesome, but I would love to join. ;)

Fondest Memory: One day when Beatrix was overwhelmed by the sheer number of children that she was expected to take care of, her brother Harlan agreed to help out. They were all playing hide and seek, and Harlan was the last to be found. Everybody joined forces to search for him, and when Harlan was finally found, all 20 children began climbing all over the boy, pushing him deep into the snow.
Biggest Regret: Abandoning her own children.
Secret: There was a period of several months, about a year and a half before her mother died, when she ran away from her group of friends and family. She had been raped, and she discovered that she had become pregnant. Irrationally scared of what her family would think if they found out, she disappeared. She did not take care of herself very well, and by the time she gave birth to twins, she was thinking even less straight than she was when she ran away. She abandoned her children and eventually found her family again.
More: She blames herself in some ways for the rape, and leaving behind her two biological children only deepens her sense of guilt, regardless of whether or not things would have been better if she had kept them.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History: Beatrix grew up with her mother and brother in a large community. When she was nearing 12 years of age, she was raped by an older hare to whom she thought she had become close to. When she began to show signs of pregnancy, she ran away from home, causing much panic. She returned months later, bedraggled, having abandoned a pair of twins. Some months later, a fox attacked her family, initially going after Beatrix, giving the girl a scar that she still has today. Her mother leapt in front of Beatrix to protect her, and wound up getting killed. Ever since, Beatrix has taken care of her brother. Even in adulthood, the two of them have a very odd almost mother-and-son-like relationship.

Present Life: As if to "make up" for the children she abandoned at age 12, Beatrix fervently cares for her community's young ones whose parents cannot or do not have time to care for them. She runs the daycare and de facto school out of her own home, but hopes to one day work out of a proper school building. Since the fox attacked and killed her mother, she has taken to training herself in martial arts, both to protect herself and the children she takes care of.

Special Historic Notes: None

MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

Allies: His sister, Beatrix, as well as those in his community.
Enemies: Foxes
Current Goal/Purpose: Prove that he is a good farmer, and that he can take care of his sister as much as she has taken care of him
Aspirations: Own his own farm and produce store, start a family of his own.
Hobbies: Gardening, working out, drawing
Likes: Plants, farms, dancing, somewhat chilly weather
Dislikes: Heat, foxes, being indoors for long stretches of time
Talents: Gardening, fighting using farm tools
Inabilities: Harlan has trouble being patient, as well as seeing others' points of view
Fears: Winding up alone, or being unable to provide for his sister or his future family. And while he wants a family of his own someday, he also fears the end of his flirting days - he doesn't want to give that up, but fears that his flirting may someday alienate a husband- or wife-to-be
General Personality: Harlan is a bit of a hothead at times, but is also a huge flirt with both men and women.
Inner Personality: Part of him really does want to settle down and have a family. He just isn't sure of how to go about it, much less how to admit wanting to be a family man without hurting his bravado and the flirtatious image that he likes to keep.
Fondest Memory: At age six, Harlan brought in his first crop of carrots home to his mother and sister. It was really a pitiful find - four tiny things, each barely big enough to earn the name "carrot." But both his sister and his mother exclaimed excitedly over the boy's find, and his mother eagerly put them into the soup that she was making for dinner.
Biggest Regret: Not helping his sister out more when they were younger. Harlan had a tendency to be somewhat lazy in his early to mid teens, creating that much more work for Beatrix.
Secret: In the years after his mother died, Harlan took to pickpocketing and other minor theft. Goodhearted as she was, his sister Beatrix assumed that his occasional gifts to her were acquired by honest means. Harlan has since stopped his old thieving habits, but he has never told his sister about it.

SPECIALTY CHARACTERISTICS

Special Items: A bag of seeds that continually replenishes itself. What the seeds will grow into when they are planted is a surprise to everybody but Harlan himself, who seems to have some sort of control over what the seeds become.
Weapons: Harlan keeps a sharp spade tied to his belt at all times. It makes a surprisingly good weapon.
Magics: Like his sister, Harlan can smell scents from miles away. He also has a certain control over plants. He can help them grow faster or recover from blight, and also has limited control over the seeds that he plants from his pouch (in that he can, for the most part, control what they grow into.)
More: His right arm aches before it rains. This is not so much a magical power or special ability, so much as the result of an old injury.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History: Harlan grew up with his mother and sister until he was nine years old, when his mother was killed by a fox. After that, his sister Beatrix raised him herself. Harlan became interested in plants at a very young age, planting various seeds around his family's home. When he was seven years old, a neighboring hare took a keen interest in him, and gave him a bag of seeds for his eighth birthday.

"Those seeds are magic, sonny," the older hare promised him. "Treat them right, and they'll do wonders for yeh."

At age 15, Harlan began looking for work. As it turned out, the hare who had given him the bag of seeds, a fellow by the name of Cato, ran a farm nearby and offered the boy a job.

Present Life: Harlan has been working on Cato's farm ever since the man offered the job. Since Cato has no children, Harlan hopes to one day inherit the farm.

Special Historic Notes: Harlan got the scars along his arm one day when a fox found his way onto the farm. The two got into a fight and Harlan was the eventual victor, but not without a cost. The fox must have done significant damage, as his right arm is still frequently stiff and will often ache when rain is coming.
