The AI Project

Then I can go with the closest thing, which would be an actual handheld computer wirelessly hooked up to her eyes so they project an AR-like interface. If I'm understanding you right, it's the connections to the brain that are the problem, so that should work. Instead of thought control like standard AR it'd be motion controlled (think all the holographic screens you've seen in scifi where the operator moves the windows around with his hands, only Midnight is the only person who can see it and it moves with her).
That's good. Sorry I took so long to get back to you; I had some class work and stuff to finish up before break. You're good to go! I'll add you to the roster!

Right. I wasn't sure if to actually make both of them. Just if I could I wanted to have them reserved and think about it. Reserving Pearl though for now is good. Thanks.
Alrighty. If we do double up (and we very well might) and Libra is open at the time, you'll get first dibs.

Caine

Name: Canaan "Caine" Luke Daniels

Gender: Male
Age: 19
Home planet: Alva
Home system: La Luz
Occupation: Member of PI (Porouss Initium)

Porouss Initium
The volcanic planet of Porouss is believed to contain a rare metal. This metal is said to be very valuable, but no team has ever had a successful excavation to obtain said metal. The first few teams that went into Porouss either perished or returned empty-handed. As such, the UPN established Porouss Initium (PI) to oversee this project. They constructed a habitable artificial satellite as their base of operations and to orbit around the planet Porouss. Their task is to manage the exploration teams, map out the surface of the planet, and to ensure that the safety of their exploration teams are taken care of. Over the years, the number of casualties has reduced to a 'relatively' safe figure of 43%. Even so, the volcanic activities on Porouss is often unpredictable, thus making this a 'one-trip' job.

Appearance (description):
Caine stands at 5'9", an average height for a 19-year-old Caucasian male. His overall physique is rather lean and well-built, due to the nature of his occupation and the many odd jobs he has had before. He prefers to have his blonde hair short and cropped, simply because he couldn't be arsed to style it. His seemingly happy-go-lucky nature shows in his default expression: carefree, relaxed with eyes in bright hazel. But whether or not it hides something else underneath all that, nobody really knows.

History:
Caine comes from a family with a strong hold on religion. Despite how times have changed and religion is but a relic of the past, there are those who still continue to hold firm to that belief. His father, being one of the few, is a priest in a Neo-Christian church, and by default, his mother is a devoted believer. Jacob, his older brother, followed in his father's footsteps as his father's acolyte. Seeing that most of his family members fell in line to worship the glory of God, Caine's path was never there.

Even though he was brought up with religious teachings, Caine always had doubts about religion. After all, the world has drastically changed, and technology enabled most people to explain phenomenas and mysteries that was once regarded as religious events. And thus he wondered why his family still persists believing in something as old-fashioned as religion.

Such questions and doubts developed tensions in the house, and with Caine's ideals being the only one against the rest of his family, he was torn.

"Why can't you be more like your brother?"

Restricted by his religious upbringings and unable to take the pressure, he left his home at the age of 16 in search of something more meaningful: freedom and truth.

During his time away from the house, he worked several odd jobs in the city, ranging from factory worker to other forms of hard labour. Living on his own in the city has also forced him to shape up and learn how to defend himself. But when UPN initiated Porouss Initium (PI) and advertised its vacancy, Caine took up the job and was transported to Porouss instantaneously. One would question his motives for going on a 'suicide' mission to Porouss, but being a teenager with big aspirations, Caine saw this as an opportunity to rise to the top. Thinking he would be the first to discover the rare metal, he can imagine he'd be rewarded handsomely and prove to everyone and himself that he can succeed.

Unfortunately, things never really go according to plan.

On his first trip to the planet's surface, the team had successfully set up an excavation site and was in the midst of excavating. But the ground was unstable and the team was faced against an unexpected volcano activity. The rest of the team tried to escape through their escape pods but were completely washed away by lava, leaving only the team leader, one escape pod, and Caine, mid-extraction.

Amidst the chaos, Caine was able to successfully extract a small piece of an unidentified ore.

"Congratulations, kid. You got it," said the older man, kicking Caine to the ground, "Now give it to me."

He held the ore tightly in his hand, "No, I found it first. It's mine!"

"Whatever you find belongs to PI, kid," the older man chuckled, "And after that, you come back here to find more."

He glanced from the older man to the escape pod,

"No."

Caine returned alone. The fact the he managed to return from something as disastrous as that event surprised not only the workers there but also the management team. When interviewed, Caine disclosed all that happened as a failed mission; there were no rare metals or minerals, nothing of the sort. The people working there regarded him with respect and in awe of him being able to survive from that. Caine played along with a smile on his face, knowing full well what truly happened down there.

The rare ore was still with him, kept somewhere safe and hidden from prying eyes. He has no intention of turning it in.

Not long after that event, he was assigned to be a part of Project AI.

Little did he know, there was a reason, unbeknownst to him, why he was selected to be part of the project.

Personality:
Caine is generally a happy-go-lucky type of person, always a smile or cracking jokes every time he has the chance. He often thinks himself the best at what he does, even though situations sometimes prove him otherwise. In situations like that, he does 'sometimes' bite his tongue and listen to advice when given, but only if it makes sense to him. He has always been clear on what he wants, still sticking to his goals from before: freedom and truth. But since that incident, he became very conflicted inside. However, he never shows this side to anyone.

Aside from that, Caine is also a brash and hasty, typical for youths at his age. (Rage on, hormones, rage on!)

Talents/Skills:
+ Endurance
+ Self-defence
+ Sleight-of-hand
+ Swift-footed

Other:
Stibnite_Calcite_203075.jpg
Not much is known about this ore found on Porouss. And with Caine keeping this away from anyone's view, there may be a possibility that nobody will ever know what it can really do.

AI name:
Garnet

AI character:
+ Pragmatic
+ Logical
+ No-nonsense
+ Curious/Fascination

AI appearance (image):
aon_ashe_neg.jpg

Garnet, unlike most AI humanoid-holograms, appears in the form of a symbol. When he speaks, he glows, lighting up at every word spoken. His voice is gruff, like that of an older man in his 30s, but monotonous like how a machine would sound when speaking.
Accepted! I'll put you up on the roster! I know I've said it before, but I really do like how Garnet appears as a symbol rather than an AI.

Name:
Kurtis Alvin Rinalt

Gender:
Male

Age:
24

Home planet:
Earth

Home system:
Sola

Occupation:
Pilot

Appearance (image):
gXpC1VG.png

Appearance (description):
Kurtis stands at 6 feet tall, having brown hair, brown eyes. He has a relatively lean build, albeit with decently well developed leg muscles.

In the military, he is usually seen in his pilot garb (pictured above), a white and blue suit with some mechanical helps, mostly for pilot stability when pulling high speed maneuvers. The suit comes with a helmet, though it's usually haphazardly stored in whatever spacecraft he's using at the time. In his more civilian outfit, he generally wears a loose fitting blue t-shirt and brown pants and white shoes.

Distinguishing features:
Unusually, he does wear thin, square glasses, an oddity in a galaxy full of sophisticated cybernetics. If asked, he usually notes a distaste of cybernetic modification (at least when it's used for enhancement instead of for a life saving purpose). Occasionally he also wears a pair of white golf gloves, though this is usually only when he's out in the field.

Personality:
Kurtis, when met, displays a rather laid back, seemingly lazy personality. However, at heart he is a hard worker. He prefers not to rush into situations, usually analyzing a situation before making any sort of decision. He typically keeps to himself, though is the friendly sort. His many successes have made him quite overconfident, and he tends to brag about his abilities when asked about his profession.

Talents/Skills:
-Experience with both civilian and military spacecraft and aircraft
-Good with machines
-Good at "tactical retreats"
-Some experience with small arms

History:
Kurtis hails from Earth, geographically speaking from the United States. His family was not particularly noteworthy, his father being a scientist for a cooperation. What happened in those days Kurtis regards as not particularly important, though it did form his love of machines and science. Once he reached the legal age, he signed up to join the military, out of a sense of duty to his country, and also to help the galaxy not get blasted into space dust by the Khaians.

His life in the military was rough at first. He was not particularly fit, so base camp ended up being especially hard for him, though he made do. Once his initial training was over, he was called to the Navy, specifically as a shuttle pilot. At first he was not thrilled with the seemingly boring assignment, until the Khaian military tore the fighter escort to pieces. After that, he gained a particular dislike of the Khaians, but was content with his current job.

As for the incident that got him into the AI program, there was at one point a request sent through for volunteers to pull off a dangerous assignment. A certain government research team on Porouss was stranded in their area, about to be cooked by the planet's infamous volcanic shifts. Making matters worse, the most feasible route for a shuttle to pick them up was an obstacle course of lava and death. Kurtis took the job after no one else volunteered, and, determined to get the team to safety, pushed his shuttle to the limit to get in and out. By a miraculous combination of skill and insane luck, the mission was a success. The shuttle itself sustained only a slight burn mark from a particularly close call and a slightly damaged engine from turning too heavily.

This particular feat gained the notice of some official or other who put him on a watch list. Kurtis was transferred to a fighter starship to see if he had much use as a military asset. He did reasonably well in that position, shooting down few enemy craft but managing to survive every mission with his craft intact. The performance here got him "volunteered" to be part of the AI Project. He protested at first, but was told in no uncertain terms that there would be...consequences to not participating. Annoyed, he relented, only hoping that the AI merging process would not kill him.

Other:
His only real weapon on the ground is a simple Sub-Machine Gun, standard issue, though with a dumb AI assisted scope to help his accuracy.

AI name:
Libra

AI character:
Libra, like her originator, has a keen interest in biology, especially in genetics, and has knowledge of anatomy and psychology. Unusually for an AI though, she also developed an odd sense of morality, and tries to choose the correct and morally sound path whenever possible. She hides this fact from her creators, for fear that they would deactivate her. She mimics a vibrant, bubbly personality, sometimes talking too fast for humans to make sense of her rambling.

AI appearance (description):
Libra appears as a human hologram with black hair, dark eyes, and an orange and black vest. The hologram itself stands at about 5 feet tall, and has a slender looking build. (So essentially, it's the above photo without the gas mask).

Hmm... I've been having a little trouble finding a picture for my AI. Where did you guys find yours? What kind of keywords did you type?

So Rainjay do we get like a holo pic for our AI?

The AI can take on any appearance, so it would really matter on your perception of their personality in a physical representation.

Same as above here; in short, yes.

Um, okay. That's not what I'm worried about though. I'm referring to the holographic, sciency type pictures and symbols. I just need a little direction, that's all.

Well, if you'd like a symbol, I would Google search "Symbols" to start with, but if you decide on a color you want for it, a general shape or type, you can add that too.

Or, for my image, I really just googled "Blue hair sci fi girl" and scrolled till I found something I liked..

You likely won't find anything that looks truly holographic. But that's alright; the images are a reference.

Ah, my brain just clicked. At first, I was unsure what kind of habits would be good for AI, but I just looked over a character sheet only listing personality traits. It's all good here. You can reserve Leo for me again. Apologies for missing the last deadline- I thought it was today but that's probably because of my homework.

It's alright! I haven't been on about all day myself, so I didn't quite notice ;)

If you need anything, let us know!

Slowly but surely cranking out the CS.

I'm a little confused on the AI personality as well, mostly I can't decide exactly how "human-like" they can be without going too high on the sentience meter.

Think of them as a literal representation of a human; the point of these AIs is that they are the first to be truly sentient (with some limitations). They were cloned byte by byte from their 'host', so their personality would match that person's exactly, if perhaps they may not have the room to expand upon personalities.

Then, I suppose there will be no room for the AIs to grow as a 'person', making them always like their host when they were alive at the time? Can a memory upgrade, or something of the sort, (should it be made available for our candidates) help to make that happen?

Yes, a memory upgrade could be used to expand an AI. For the purposes of generating a personality, though, it would be best to take it at face value of who they were as flesh and blood.
