[fieldbox="Theo Ripley, red, solid, 30, Mistral"]
Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock.
The pounding in Theo's head had taken a strange, irregular tempo.
Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock.
Groaning, he rolled over and pulled a pillow over his face, sighing in relief when it muffled the next set of thumping.
Knckknockknocnknocknknock.
And then, blessed silence. He'd managed to fall into a light slumber, and had just started to dream about mead and women, when...
BANG. BANG. BANG. BANG. BANG. "THEODORE MICHAEL RIPLEY."
At the sound of his sister's shrill, demanding voice, the prince jolted out of bed with a yell of alarm and stumbled drunkenly towards the chamber door. The barmaid who had been tucked under his arm sat up suddenly, pulling the covers over herself and blinking stupidly at the commotion, just as drunk and just as unfocused as Theo, who'd reached the door and wrenched it open.
"Vivi - wha'?" He mumbled, rubbing the back of his hand over his eyes.
"Theo, for gods' sake!" Vivien looked away very pointedly from her brother's nudity as she marched into the room, pointing at the servant girl.
"OUT." She growled. The girl scrambled from the bed and scooped her clothes up off the floor, hurrying past the pair of them into the hallway.
"Vivi!" Theo protested, frowning widely. She threw a pair of pants in his general direction without looking, and he pulled them on.
"Vivi come on, this is ridiculous, what are you-?"
"No, Theo, what's ridiculous, is that you're so damned incompetent, that the servants have to come get me to wake your worthless hide up because instead of preparing and packing for your trip, you decided to get drunk and seduce poor Wylla instead!"
"Ah, Wylla, that's her name. Thanks."
Staring at him with a befuddled look, Vivien let her mouth hang open like she was going to say something before giving a frustrated squeak and shoving past him, the bottom of her gown sweeping across his feet almost indignantly. She threw his boots at him, the second smacking him in the temple as he scrambled to catch the first.
"Get your ass to the courtyard, I've no doubt that Nik and Al have been waiting for you this whole time." And with that she was gone, slamming his door behind her and mumbling words that even his sharp ears couldn't pick up in their entirety. Though he had a feeling it was something along the lines of
worthless, irresponsible twit.
You do this to yourself, you know.
The dragon's voice in his head made Theo startle. Even after years of training, sharing your brain with someone else was something that took getting used to. Clutching his boots to his chest, Theo walked out to the dragon balcony that adorned his room. Kenaa was stretched languidly across the marble ledge, her tail drooping off the edge, and the sun sending sanguine highlights dancing off of her scales across the outside of the castle.
"You could have woken me up." He complained, leaning against her scaly shoulder and stifling a yawn.
You'll have to learn eventually. She chastised.
"Yeah, yeah." Theo grumbled, pulling on his boots one at a time and lacing them tightly.
"Have you heard from the others?"
No, not yet. But I expect their delay has an acceptable excuse, and they haven't been engaging in your type of debauchery. You're a bad influence on the both of them.
"Kenaa, you wound me." He feigned hurt, and she clicked her scaly eyelids shut with a throaty chuckle. The dragon yawned, flashing dagger-long fangs, long pointed tongue curling at the tip.
Go on, gather your things. She said.
I'm ready when you are.
Sulking back into the bedroom, Theo dressed and packed his bags messily. He, Nikolai and Alano were due to leave today on a week long patrol of the southernmost border, where high amounts of rebel activity had been reported. Once packed, he headed back to the dragon balcony and saddled Kenaa, tying his bags to each side and swinging up into the seat.
"Take it easy on me, will you? I'm still drunk."
Not a chance. The dragon replied, and he hardly had time to brace himself before Kenaa leaped into the air, catching herself as two massive wings unfolded from her back. Together, they headed for the courtyard to find their companions.
