I say go for it. And I think it's fine: There are probably like, a zillion characters with psychic powers similar to this sort of thing, so what really makes your character original is their personality, looks, and overall just who they are as a person. It's those details that makes it possible to have more than one space adventurer or non-powered hero without them all just being Green Lantern or Batman because you can tell they're different people with different means of achieving things.
