JEDI

A person who is Force-sensitive is commonly referred to as a Jedi. While this is a trait that can define a broad spectrum--there are three main branches. Jedi have several ranks often bestowed to those who have been deemed “worthy” of such roles with time, training and a great deal of patience. Let’s look over the ranks:

Jedi youngling: A young child who was Force-sensitive would be identified at birth and taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to be trained as a Jedi. They were to be put into classes of other Jedi younglings and trained together before being taken as an apprentice by a Jedi Knight. Younglings were not to be trained once they had reached a certain age, with the sole exception to this rule being Anakin Skywalker.

Padawan: A youngling who had been chosen by a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master to train under their tutelage personally into becoming a fully fledged Jedi Knight.

Jedi Knight: Once a Padawan has successfully passed the Jedi trials, they were be granted the rank of Jedi Knight and went out on missions of their own, no longer under the tutelage of a master.

Jedi Master: A Jedi Knight was granted the rank of Jedi Master when they had shown great skill, wisdom and devotion to the Force. When a Jedi Knight successfully led a Padawan to becoming a Jedi Knight themselves, they would also be granted the rank of Master. (GM permission required.)

Grand Master: The leader of the Jedi High Council, the position of Grand Master was given to the oldest and considered to be the wisest member of the Jedi Order. (Gm appoined only.)

Master of the Order: This position was assumed by the leader of the Jedi Order. He or she had to be voted unanimously into the position by the Jedi High Council. ( GM appointed only)

As you can see here, there is a lot of responsibility even from an early age, pressed upon devotees of this Order. But to answer what exactly IS a Jedi, one must learn the differences and similarities within the order. For example, all Jedi were Force-sensitive individuals, their power ranging from modest to great. Also, while not every Jedi took to the field and fought, every Jedi knew how to wield a lightsaber. Though you can imagine the differences of a fielded sentry and a an elderly sage easily, it is not so easy to define their strength from one act of bravery alone.

Each member of the Order had a part to play, a hand in the ongoings of the Jedi and all were taught to respect each other’s work and rank. Still, as easy as it is to not see the old hermit for what he’s worth--it is easy to see the differences between he and the sentry. As mentioned, there are three branches within the sect which few ordinary people ever realize. The three branches are the Jedi Guardian, the Jedi Sentinel, and the Jedi Consular. These three extensions stand for willpower, wisdom and practicality. One must be wise to be practical. One must be practical to carry on with the willpower to endure. One’s willpower to endure came with wisdom. These three are linked like unbreakable chains interlocked. Taking a look at these one will discover the differences and their roles in the Order.

Jedi Guardian

"We Guardians are the Republic's first line of defense against the thousand enemies who seek to destroy it."- Jedi Master Crix Sunburris

The Jedi Guardian is essentially the warrior within all Jedi. While all Jedi can fight with a lightsaber with varying degree of proficiency, it is the Guardian's role to be the duelist and weapon specialist of the Order. Often times Guardians spend so much time on their martial prowess and physicality, that they can learn different styles of lightsaber use, can often blend them flawlessly and often use the Force to enhance their own capability.

This can be a double-edged sword however, as they spend so much of their time perfecting their craft with a blade, they don’t delve deeply into the nurturing side of the Force and unlock its deep mysteries. Therefore, man Guardians lack the progression aptitude in the Force that individuals selected from other Branches. Of course, this does not mean that all Jedi from Consulars and Sentinels start out on that path. They may begin as a Guardian as many do, but as their training as a Padawan learner begins to unlock their potential they may exhibit signs of increase in their ability to control and manipulate the Force. Some go to become Sentinels, others Consulars to better suit their growing capabilities in either field.

It isn’t so much that Guardians are weak in the Force per say. Some individual hold a strong connection, yet when the fighting starts they use that deep rooted connection as a source of empowerment to endure trial and tribulation. It this reason that they embody Willpower. Their deeds with a lightsaber rarely go unnoticed and so they are often appointed as protectors of highly important individuals and to help maintain the peace in a show of might while the Jedi Consulars use their gifts of persuasion, and Sentinels acting as clever spies to bring stability. In this way, they all need one another but it is the careful, precise strokes of a Guardian's blade that bring a swift resolve.

There are three specializations for which a Guardian to choose once he is ranked Knight or higher. While these paths don’t necessarily have to be taken by a Guardian, it’s a way of more clearly defining what role they play as a Guardian in itself.

A Jedi Weapon Master was a title given to those Jedi Masters who pursued the study of physical combat with the Force, especially of exotic weapons (or unusual styles) under the distinct schooling division known as the Jedi Guardian.

Deciding to adopt a different weapon than that carried by other Jedi, Weapons Specialists worked with tools other than a lightsaber to defeat their foes. A rarity in the Order, Weapons Specialists worked with double-bladed lightsabers, lightsaber pikes, flails, whips, and blasters.

Vital to the training of Jedi Initiates at the Temple, lightsaber instructors were chosen by the current Jedi battlemaster after having served many long years on the front lines of battle. While the title battlemaster was taken up by many, it was eventually once more used to represent a single Jedi at each academy, recommending potential instructors to the Jedi High Council for appointment.
Jedi instructors were Jedi Masters that taught the Initiates and Padawans of the Jedi Order.

Specializing in different fields, including politics, lightsaber combat, unarmed combat, and the sciences, these Jedi drew from both the Guardian and Consular branches of the Jedi Knights. Most Jedi instructors had considerable aptitude in a variety of skills that helped to maintain the Jedi's numbers. Particularly, Jedi instructors were adept at identifying an Initiate's weak points, preventing their students from falling to the dark side, and helping young Jedi determine the role they would best fit in the Order.

The Jedi Peacekeepers were specialists in the art of policing the galaxy and ensuring that laws are enforced along the Outer Rim. Probably the most recognized branch of the Guardian class, these individuals served alongside Sector police and local militias to ensure peace was kept amongst the stars. The branch of Peacekeepers serving on Coruscant made up the Temple Security Force, the protectors of the Jedi Temple and the greater Temple district.

A Jedi Peacekeeper was one of the oldest and most common roles that a member of the Jedi Order could specialize in. Classified under field of study undertaken by the Jedi Guardians, this specialization focused on police and security operations, working with local law enforcement agencies to suppress violence before it erupted.

Jedi Sentinal

"This Jedi ferrets out deceit and injustice, bringing it to light."―Jedi Master Dorak

A Jedi Sentinel was the name given to one of the three distinct branches of Jedi that sought a balance between the other two branches, the Consulars and the Guardians. While they possessed considerable combat skills and had somewhat extensive knowledge of the Force, Sentinels blended both schools of teaching and amplified them with a series of non-Force skills, such as in the fields of security, computers, stealth techniques, demolitions, repair or medicine. These skills tended to take the forefront in their middle-road approach to problems; while a Guardian might bash down a locked door and a Consular simply knock, a Sentinel would instead use equipment available or ingenuity to pick the lock.

While studying all of the traditional techniques and abilities that made the Jedi who they were, the Sentinels of the Order found their isolation in the Jedi Temple to be a hindrance if they were expected to be able to work with the civilians of the galaxy. While adherents to the Force and all that it could do, Sentinels were not blinded by faith and realized that the mystical energy field did have its limitations. Typically opting for missions requiring them to stay in a single place for long periods of time, the Sentinels would take on assignments not suited to the other Jedi branches.

Working as specialized trackers and even spies, the Jedi Investigators worked closely with law enforcement to track down criminals and discover the truth behind crimes. Going undercover for long stretches of time, investigators should not be confused with their Shadow cousins, as the role of an investigator focuses mainly on crime as opposed to Dark Side Adepts.

Working as agents to the Jedi High Council, these individuals were highly certified to work with law enforcement agencies in tracking down criminals and uncovering hidden and obscure threats to the galaxy and the Galactic Republic. Appointed by the Council, Jedi investigators were charged with rooting out threats via their detective skills and Force abilities.

A highly respected and secreted group of Jedi, the Shadows went farther than the Investigators in their hunt for the truth. Working closely with the Council of First Knowledge, the Shadows seek and destroy all traces of the Dark side of the Force, and its adepts. While not always present at the Temple, the Shadows were based in the Temple Precinct and reported back as frequently as their mission allowed.

Dating back as far as the Great Hyperspace War, the Jedi Shadows were dispatched in its aftermath to find and destroy any artifacts left behind by the seemingly destroyed Sith Empire. This led to the destruction of Sith amulets, talismans and other relics that were tainted with the power of the dark side of the Force.

The Jedi Watchmen were a group of individuals who chose to work alone in the oversight of peace on a single planet or system. Focusing on bettering society and protecting the rights of a system for years at a time, they became a vital liaison between the planetary government and the Jedi High Council.

These Jedi Knights opted to stay in one place, operating alongside a sector or system government and ensuring diplomacy was maintained in all matters. These Jedi would also oversee the testing and reporting of any Force-sensitive born in their sector, turning the child over to the Acquisition Division if positive result was returned.

Jedi Consular

"A Consular is a specialized kind of Jedi. They focus more on cerebral Force skills. They're our healers, our researchers, our seers."
―Zayne Carrick

A Jedi Consular was the title of one of three distinct branches which a member of the Jedi Order could decide to study under following their ascension to the rank of Jedi Knight, the other two being Jedi Guardian and Jedi Sentinel. Led by the Council of Reconciliation, the Consulars sought diplomatic measures in spreading peace and harmony across the Galactic Republic. Refraining from drawing their lightsabers (many Consulars wielded green lightsabers) except as a measure of last resort, Consulars spent a great deal of time studying the mysteries of the Force.

What Jedi Guardians achieved through combat, Jedi Consulars achieved with words or non-violent use of the Force. Concentrating on mental refinement through study and meditation, Consulars sought to perfect the art of diplomacy and mediation, hoping to calm a tense situation or mend hurt feelings through civil discourse, reasoning, and parley, rather than drawing their lightsabers and cutting down an attacker. While Jedi Consulars would attempt to avoid conflict for as long as possible, the Consulars were sensible and carried a lightsaber, often with a green blade to symbolize their commitment to peace. Jedi Consulars were also able to focus their Force usage against their enemies, which made it harder for opponents to resist a Consular's Force powers.

Led by the Circle of Jedi Healers, the Healers drew upon the Living Force to preserve life and cleanse impurities and wounds. Working closely with the Medical Corps, the Healers oftentimes worked on the battle fields of war-torn worlds, aiding in the medical treatment of soldiers.

A Jedi healer was a specialized field of study within the ranks of the Jedi Order. Those Jedi Knights that wished to amplify the healing abilities taught to all at the Jedi academy who would chose to continue study as a Jedi Consular, working with the Circle of Jedi Healers and the Medical Corps. A healer's role in the Order was self-evident and their existence has spanned millennia.
Highly attuned to the Unifying Force, the Seers of the Jedi Order were gifted with pre- and post- cognition, seeing glimpse granted by the Force of things to come, and things which have already transpired. Jedi Prophets were a rarity amongst the Seers, and were able to divine such things as the Prophecy of the Chosen One.

Serving the Jedi Order as conduits to the Unifying Force, the Seers were responsible for receiving Force visions and interpreting them for the Jedi High Council and the Council of First Knowledge. Working closely with their brother and sister Lore Keepers, the Seers updated and provided new information to store in the holocrons of the Order.
Jedi Sages were highly attuned in the Force, manipulating it to the extent they could rip apart foes and distort reality. The Jedi Sages were skilled in the use of Force Shield and Force Wave, and were exceptional healers, diplomats, ambassadors, seers and telekinetic and Force combatants.

These Jedi specialized in Force healing and Telekinesis. Jedi Sages were known to primarily wield one single-bladed lightsaber in combat, and were adept at ranged attacks with the Force.

Sith

“The dark side will devour those who lack the power to control it. It’s a fierce storm of emotion that annihilates anything in its path. It lays waste to the weak and unworthy. But those who are strong can ride the storm winds to unfathomable heights. They can unlock their true potential; they can sever the chains that bind them; they can dominate the world around them. Only those with the power to control the dark side can ever truly be free.”–Darth Bane

Formed during the Hundred-Year Darkness, thousands of years prior to the Clone Wars, the Sith were the ancient enemies of the Jedi Order. Established by a rogue Jedi, the Sith sought further knowledge and power through learning the dark side of the Force. The Sith built empires on the backs of their slaves and fought wars against the Jedi for control of the galaxy, during which time they built massive superweapons powered by giant kyber crystals. At one point, nearly six thousand years before the rise of the Galactic Empire, the Sith built a shrine on Coruscant, which became a place of immense dark side power. Later in history, the Jedi raised their own temple over that shrine in hopes of stamping out its power. The Sith Order's traditional homeworld was Moraband, a planet of red sands that the group was forced to abandon after it was scarred by many wars.
Sith acolyte: A training rank. They are still in training at the Shadow Academy and are generally very unskilled with the Force.

Sith Apprentice: A training rank. They are now being trained under a master, but have yet to be realized as a full Sith.

Sith: A training rank. They have gotten a true lightsaber and are stronger than lesser ranks. Other than that, they are identical to Padawans.

Sith Adept: The bulk of Sith forces. They are quite powerful with the Force. They are able to train one Padawan at a time. It is also at this rank that they gain their Darth name.

Sith Master: A powerful Sith rank. This rank is gained after training a Padawan to Marauder status. They have mastered the Dark Side of the Force and are capable of training three Padawans at a time.

Sith Lord: There are very few worthy of attaining this rank. They have not only mastered the Dark Side, but the Force in general. At this rank, the Sith may be known by their real name or Darth, depending on personal preference. A Lord is second only to the Dark Lord and are able to train as many Padawans as they see fit.

Dark Lord: There is only one member of this rank. Whoever holds it is leader of all Sith.

Sith Warriror

"Constant war will be your life? Our life? Nothing more?"
"I am a Sith warrior."―Eleena Daru and Darth Malgus

Sith Warriors, described as "an unstoppable force of darkness",were combat specialists of the Sith Empire, and served as the champions of the battlefield, entrusted with the task of destroying the Empire’s enemies and enforcing Sith domination across the galaxy. Trained to rely on the emotions of fear, anger, and hatred to improve their connection to the dark side of the Force, channeling its power through their bodies and purging weakness from themselves.

In contrast to the Sith Inquisitors, Warriors had little patience for careful planning, and wasted no time with such manipulations. Instead, they demanded absolute obedience from their followers, relying on power and intimidation to attain their ends. However, such blunt methods did not reduce them to single-mindedness, and Sith Warriors had been known to go renegade in order to pursue their own agendas. The sith were known for their red lightsabers.

These Sith specialized in combat endurance and were known for wearing armor that provided them special protection in battle. Relying on the Force to boost their stamina, Juggernauts were capable of shrugging off damage that would destroy others. Charging into the thick of combat, Juggernauts take the brunt of the damage, all the while using the Force to cause terror and despair in enemy combatants. Juggernauts were even capable of draining the energy of their opponents to further strengthen themselves and their resolve. These Sith specialized in combat endurance and were known for wearing armor that provided them special protection in battle.

The term "Sith Marauder" originally referred to all Sith combat specialists, though it eventually came to refer specifically to this specialized division of them.

Whereas Juggernauts focus on stamina and brute force, Marauders focus on speed and efficiency. Relying on the Force to intuit how to maximize every attack, Marauders cut down their enemies in the blink of an eye. Gearing themselves towards seeing every weakness in their foes and exploiting it to the maximum, Marauders never hesitate nor falter, and are considered the swiftest bringers of pain and damage in the galaxy. They specialize in dual-lightsaber combat, a fighting form they utilize with unmatched aggression.

Sith Marauders were fueled by hatred, rage, and cruelty; the Marauders would typically use Force Rage when entering a battle, entering a battle-fury fueled by the dark side. Thus, most Sith Marauders could duel any average Jedi, toe-to-toe and win.

Sith Inquistor

"I know that treachery can break even the mightiest foe. And for those who study its secrets, the Force offers... unlimited power."―Kallig, a Sith Inquisitor

Sith Inquisitors were a class of powerful Force-wielders within the Sith Empire, operating primarily within the upper echelons and political circles. In contrast to their counterparts, the Sith Warriors, Inquisitors specialized in Force abilities as opposed to martial might, and many would devote much time to researching new skills to survive in the cutthroat Sith political environment. Few acolytes succeeded in becoming Inquisitors. However, those that did proved to be the most determined.

On the battlefield, Inquisitors were a spectacle to behold, channeling vast amounts of Dark Side Force energy to create massive storms of Force lightning, or draining the life force of enemies to feed themselves and their allies. However, most Inquisitors preferred a more manipulative operating style, being masters of exploiting both enemies and allies to further their own agendas.

The specialization of Sorcerer offered the greatest level of raw Force ability, as these adepts drew their power from the darkest corners of the Force, unleashing volatile energies that could wreak utter devastation against enemies. In addition to this, Sorcerers were capable of healing and bolstering their allies with these same abilities. With the very air around them crackling with energy, powerful Sorcerers had a reputation for torturous retaliations against those foolish enough to get in their way.

A Sith sorcerer or sorceress was an individual who was proficient in the arts of Sith magic, using spells, talismans or incantations to focus the power of the dark side. They were discovered during the time of the original Sith Empire. Sith sorcerers gained their powers through intense study of Sith traditions, and applications of the dark side of Force. Occasionally, an aspiring sorcerer's powers were developed through sheer innate talent, rather than harnessing them through study, or spontaneously, or being bestowed upon them by another source. The term was synonymous with Sith magician, with females who dabbled in Sith magic being sometimes referred to as Sith witches.

Whereas Sorcerers focused on raw power, Sith Assassins preferred a subtler approach. Speed and deception were their tools of the trade, relying on stealth tactics to infiltrate enemy ranks and remove high-profile targets. Even in open battle, Assassins were utterly deadly, relying on both tactical awareness and mind tricks to assault enemies both physically and mentally, manipulating a confrontation to ensure their side maintains the upper hand. While highly skilled with the saberstaff, their weapon of choice for both offense and defense, Assassin's could channel the Force just as easily.

The Sith assassins were unique because they preferred to ambush their intended prey from the shadows rather than engaging them in open combat. Almost always working solo or in small groups, they utilized stealth field generators and the rare art of Force camouflage to aid their surprise attacks. While some elite assassins fought with lightsabers, the majority utilized less remarkable melee weapons, such as force pikes. These stealth warriors were also unusual in that they drew their power from the Force presence of their prey. The stronger their targets were in the Force, the stronger the hunters became.

@Deathwatch101

Well, you can be I suppose, a Sith or Republican trooper. You could even be a bounty hunter. I was simply laying out the guidelines for the force users.

Obviously i would expect a trooper to be pretty weak one on one against a sith for example.

@Deathwatch101

Well no doubt. Troopers are generally considered 'cannon fodder' unless otherwise noted. That said, I don't want the Jedi or Sith to overpowered in their own ways either.

I just like playing the underdog/minor side back up guy ;P

I'd be willing to play a Female Sith if you'll have me.

So obviously as im prepared to be the lacky (trooper) any jedi or sith that calls dibs on me can have me.

@Shayla

Sure thing Shayla, welcome. :) I'm just going to wait a couple more days for any others who might find this interesting as well.

Great! I will more than likely be creating a female Sith Inquisitor or Assassin. ^^

Well splendid. Just keep your idea for now, and wait until the powers and CS template are out. If you have any ideas, feel free to pm me.

I know you said that you were going to base the game on KOTOR II. Is there going to be any info used from SWTOR? Also, since Disney has said that nothing beyond the movies and their "cartoons" is "canon" is there going to be a large amount of freedom to create historic events, etc.?

@Seeking Calliope

I didn't say I was basing this on the KOTR games. I said it would take place around the same time period as Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords. There is a difference. Basing them off the games would mean we would be following that cannon history. We would essentially be making our own time line, with our own enemies and also our own events. I merely used Sith Lords as a starting point for a time frame of which this will all be taking place to give an idea of what things would look like for imaginative purposes. As for creative freedom, sure. But keep in mind none of the heroes or antagonists from the other games exist. It will all be original content.

That is why I said I get to be the one who decides who becomes a Dark Lord but they get to choose their apprentice.

So to be clear, no heroes or villains from the games. The technological level stays the same, we will create our own events.

I'm still waiting to see if one or two others might join us before I initiate what powers can be used for either side as well as a CS template. Right now I simply need to see everyone's interest.

Also, I'm thinking of implementing the saber color coded system that ancient Jedi and Sith followed where they often brandished sabres of a specific color to match their ranking in their orders. This would most likely be more used in the Jedi than the Sith groups. An example would be be blue for guardians or those more combative with a light saber, yellow for Sentinels the Jack-of-all-trades, and green for Consular the more force adept Jedi.

There are of course, many lightsaber colors--but they were the first to come to mind. Silver, Purple, Bronze, et cetera.

@Deathwatch101

I might take you up on that lackey position. Maybe tie you in with my character--it remains to be seen though. I'll have to look over your profile after I throw the template up.

So, what exactly is the story or stories (since you're allowing players to pick from opposing sides)?

If there are Sith and Jedi, are they going to interact and fight? If they do, does that mean Player character death?

@Seeking Calliope

If there are Sith and Jedi, are they going to interact and fight? If they do, does that mean Player character death?

Ideally, yes. Character deaths contribute to this rendition as they do to any other. However, I foresee that very few people will voluntarily kill off a character, especially if they grow attached. It seems almost taboo as to kill of one's character when not in a table top or dice-related game and rolling a critical failure.

That said, one of the stipulations with being the Dark Lord is that at some point--you die. Either by your apprentice's hands, or that of a Jedi. Either way the apprentice then becomes the DL. You can of course, always make another character--good or bad.

But I might just limit it to one at a time for players for now. That way if one drops for whatever reason, it's not entirely crippling to the whole infrastructure. I've seen that happen and it can really kill a game. That's why I'm looking for dedicated players--as is anyone--to join this entourage and make this fictional timeline stand on its own against the likes of the KOTR games and maybe even some of the EU novels.

I'll probably be the first to admit, but I don't know much of the story beyond what happened in the films. Even the cartoon adaptations, for whatever they are worth, are lost on me. Although, like yourself I have played both KOTR for the Xbox and the online BS they have out now. I really wish they hadn't done that. They should have made another console game that had internet Co-Op or something. The game's were better made that way. I've also played the Jedi Knight series following Kyle Katarn. That was fun, especially Jedi Knight II where you could be a Storm Trooper with a light-saber. ;p

Strictly MP of course. Unless you had a mod or something.

=====================================================================
So, what exactly is the story or stories (since you're allowing players to pick from opposing sides)?

If this gets off the ground and no one ends up taking the dark lord position, I will abandon my idea for a Jedi character and make a Dark Lord of the Sith instead. Someone needs to take up the mantle and move the story along. I'm not afraid of my characters dying. Even if they have real depth to them. Even if I spend four hours meticulously piecing him together. As long as he dies well and makes a good antagonist, that's all that matters to me.

As for the plot, I'm keeping that under wraps until I've seen fair enough interest in the idea. No sense in extrapolating if the idea itself never leaves the ground, eh?

I wonder, what is it you would like to get out of this Calliope? That's an interesting name by the way. "Chief of all the Muses", from the Greek word Kalliopē meaning "Beautiful-voiced".

That goes for you as well:

(So in the end, somebody still needs to get their hands dirty, huh...)
