Stallums of Itherad

I

n the World of Itherad the primary source of all energy which drives machinery and magic alike are little particles in the air called rovas, named after the scholar who discovered them. By complete accident, Rovas the Scholar had formed these particles into large, glassy spheres which not only stored this energy, but also produced this energy. These spheres, the scholar named stallums to pay tribute to his late mentor.[/spacer]

Under the dominion of his King Da'ill, Rovas was commanded to create more stallums to fuel the energy to build and maintain an invincible mechanical army to achieve world conquest. When news of the stallums' infinite energy had resounded through Itherad, many other empires and nations took arms to capture the power they so long yearned to wield.

A great war ensued, ravaging the nations until very few people remained on the surface of the planet and the nations' lands were devastated. Massive amounts of rovas in the atmosphere were used, resulting in the dwindling strength of the warriors who still had desire to fight. Both the planet and its inhabitants were on the brink of extinction.

However, the clement Empress Ranna of Lann proposed a treaty amongst the nations. The stallums were divided amongst the nations according to their size and these were to be used to recreate the world of Itherad. Thus, the land was reformed and the people soothed. Peace and prosperity was throughout the land for then next millenium.

A millenium later, and a power rises again to claim the stallums.

evusti skirted around the Royal Castle, avoiding the scatterbrained guards making vapid chatter with one another. He darted and weaved past bushes and carefully tended trees to find himself peering into the castle kitchen.

He wasn't going to do anything bad or anything.

In the city below, there seemed to be pandemonium, with two of the innumerable city fountains spewing water into the street. Honestly, this wouldn't have bothered Levusti in at all, except one of those fountains happened to be at the top of an incline street, and at the bottom of the incline, the deserted stables he called home. Though he'd done his best to find more wood and stone to form the walls, the ceiling's rotting wood began to bow. It was inevitable that the ceiling might collapse one day.

He was just gonna steal a fragment of the nation's stallum.

It'd be all he need anyways, then he could repair the city fountains by freezing the water, and finishing it by hand--instead of waiting for one of the Royal officials to come in and patch it up poorly. No one really cared about the area he lived in anyways, and no one was rich enough to even consider having even a novice magician to freeze the water. Levusti was the only who could use magic, but his body did not naturally draw in rovas unlike most magicians. Even a simple spell to ignite a small campfire might exhaust him, so he needed the stallum. Just a small piece, maybe the size of a stone.
It was for the good of the people. Isn't that what the country's Royal Family should consider?

The cook, a plump, rosy-cheeked woman barely tall enough than the average child, swung open the door, dragging a bag of grains that would smother her if she picked it up squealed and swore as she slowly thumped her legs to the stockroom in the rear. No one seemed to follow her, so Levusti sprinted towards the fence, climbing up and landing in a single, agile motion and then flitted into the kitchen.

"Where is the throne room?" Levusti mumbled. It was well known that all the stallum were heavily guarded in the throne room of each nation's sovereign so that there would be much rovas for magicians to draw from should a sovereign be threatened. He scampered throughout the many castle corridors, evading the guards too naive or lazy to do their duties properly. Soon, ten, then twenty, thirty minutes passed. Eventually, Levusti had spent an entire hour scouring the labyrinth of a castle for the throne room.

"...e nation, Your Majesty. It must not be delayed!" Levusti whipped his head around, listening to what seemed to be the Royal Advisor barking at a royal. Levusti looked around for a hiding place, but found nothing but draperies of a window to hide behind. Whoever it was, Levusti hoped he wouldn't be seen. All he wanted was to patch up a fountain, and now he might be caught inside the castle and called a thief, traitor, murderer, or something! Either way, it would be execution if he were found here.

t had been a long, painful day in the Castle of Flagstone for the young prince Hadrian II. Normally able to go about his own business without anyone to bother him, it seemed as though no one could leave him in peace today and it was rather vexing for him. Unlike many royals through his lineage, he had certainly not been born for this duty and nor did he desire it. Soon, the responsibility of the kingdom would be on his shoulders as his father's health continued to weaken; because of this, many of the Royal Advisers had been nagging him instead of the king in hopes to get things done.

The thought of his less the desired future brought a scowl to his face as he sat in the gardens, peering up at the sky. He longed for adventure, to get out of this place for good and never have to worry about coming back. Much to the Counsil's displeasure, Hadrian had a bad habit of escaping the palace grounds to explore the village instead of attending to his royal duties. In response to this, his father hired additional eyes to watch him and make sure he didn't continue to make further attempts—however this didn't sway him. Hadrian always found a way around everything and the extra guards and lookouts only proved to be a temporary setback before he managed to find a new, sneakier way out of the palace walls.

Hadrian was finally thinking he might get a moment to himself, having not seen any of the advisery for at least half an hour or so. His eyes slowly started to sink closed, enjoying the company of a small breeze as it rolled by. However, this peace did not last long before he heard footsteps coming towards him, first clacking against pavement then turning into synchronized ruffles against the grass to where he was lying.

"Go away. I do not wish to speak to anyone." He ordered in a stern voice, keeping his eyes closed and openly showing his displeasure at their presence.

"Excuse my interruption, sir; however this is an important matter, " the familiar voice of one of the older advisers, Doran, spoke. Hadrian let out a long, drawn out sigh and he sat up and got to his feet, making sure to make the man feel uncomfortable in his present state of frustration.

"Speak now and speak fast." He ordered, proceeding to walk forward.

"Lord Hadrian, as you may know the new ruler of Alladen has been wreaking havoc upon one of our allies…"

"Yes, yes, yes. Hurry up and get to your point." Hadrian said irritably, half ignoring what the man was saying. Doran tried to keep his composure and cleared his throat.

"Well we believe we know why. We think he might be raiding the nations and stealing the stallums. However, we are not sure why." At this, Hadrian actually became slightly intrigued. Perhaps this meant a villain was in their midst which mean justice needed to be brought. Maybe, just maybe this could be his ticket out of here. Despite his interest Hadrian kept an air of arrogance swatted his hand towards his Royal adviser as they entered the corridor into the castle.

"The nation, Your Majesty! It must not be delayed!" Doran exclaimed, becoming impatient with the prince's arrogance and failure to cooperate. "Everyone is at risk! We must do something about it! If we don't who knows what might happen!" Doran dared not to think that history might be repeating itself from the previous millennium.

"Leave me, Doran! Before I lose my patience. I will think over the matter." He ordered, his eyes ordering the man to leave if his words had not been enough and with an annoyed huff the plump gentleman finally walked away. Once he was gone Hadrian immediately began to think over the matter, slowly pacing down the corridor, finger resting against his chin as he drifted into deep thought. The young prince stopped at a window, leaning against the sturdy stone wall to gaze over the bustling townsfolk as they attended to their daily lives. This just might be the opportunity he had been waiting for for a long time…

eering through the fabric, Levusti quietly watched through the many minute holes through the curtains, shrouding the world in amber and offering only visions of colored shadows. "Everyone is at risk! We must do something about it! If not, who knows what might happen!" the old man blathered as he trotted laboriously behind the taller man. Even through the curtain was several yards away, the man's double chin was visibly jiggling with each word uttered. It was apparent that the old man, huffing audibly, had sweat beading on his brows, possibly because the man seemed to have spent as much time eating as he did talking.

"Leave me, Doran! Before I lose my patience. I will think over the matter," the taller man insisted. The advisor Doran held the man's gaze for a few moments before scuttling away with his stocky legs. Resting a finger on his chin, the man twirled towards Levusti's direction.

That man must be a royal of some sorts, Levusti thought. And one with power, nonetheless. The vagrant waited patiently behind the drapery for the noble's leave, but was surprised as the other man slowly paced towards the window where he was hiding. The noble seemed to be deep in thought, a wistful look painted across his visage. The man approached the window, peering towards the town's marketplace. His deep brown eyes scanned the town below, lingering on a person at time to time before inspecting another.

Levusti squeezed his eyes shut in panic. That's it, I'm done. He's gonna see me, I'm gonna get captured and executed. All because I want to fix the stupid fountain and the stupid ceiling. The wayfarer boy considered escaping, but he was absolutely lost. He could smash through the window and draw even the indolent guards' attention to himself--not to mention he might not even survive the distance of the drop. Perhaps he could run away and, with fortune's favor, not run into any guards. Or he could even remain here! The noble seemed to not have notice still. But after a while, he'd notice. All options seemed to offer only inevitable death at the end.

Here I go, to my death. Levusti inspirited himself as much as he could and stole a quick glance to the noble. The man seemed to be lost in a fantasy, maybe. With a disquieting worry escaping his throat, he swallowed a rising gasp. Slipping away from the windows and hurtling towards the corridor, he swung to the left and rushed to end of the unguarded hallway, with a single door awaiting. Levusti pushed and pounded the secured door with his shoulder a few times before he realized there would be no escape. "That's it, I'm damned," he panted. "I'm a branded criminal." He pulled the hood of his cloak on his head, ashamed to turn around to meet the noble who'd sentence him to his death.

as all of this hopeless? Hadrian often wondered if there was something wrong with him for craving adventure and to see new places as in the fairytales he had grown up on. While he no longer dreamed of fighting vicious dragons and saving damsels in distress, he still longed to see the world and what it held. It had to be more than this. His father often told him to stop dwelling on silly dreams and to start living in reality, however the man had been talking to a stone wall. There was no convincing the young prince of giving up hope and willingly walking into a mindless, ghastly future that he did not desire.
As Hadrian continued to dwell within his own mind of possibilities a figure suddenly bolted from the drapery directly to his right, jolting him out of daze. He had only milliseconds to react to what had just happened, his feet instinctively moving into a sprint after the blur of a figure.

"Halt!!" He shouted after them once his mind had finally caught up with his body in the situation. "I command you to halt!" The prince ordered once again but the intruder obviously showed no signs of stopping—not that he had expected them to cooperate anyway. As his body swerved to make the sharp turn his foot sliding on the blasted ornamental carpet which decorated the intersection, almost causing him to trip. Luckily he managed to keep himself upright by placing his hand on the ground in front of him. He burst back into a gallop, trying his best to keep up with the figure but it was quite obvious whoever this stranger was they were much nimbler than himself. Speed and agility had never been the princes best quality, his preferences being close combat and skillful sword dance.

"STOP!" He shouted once again, finally seeing the trespasser attempting an escape by slamming their body against one of the many doors which scattered the hall. As Hadrian closed the space between them he realized that it looked like they were…giving up? Certainly they wouldn't have gone to all of that trouble just to let him catch them. Surely Hadrian was going to have the chance to use his lifelong training. At least that was what the young prince was secretly hoping.

The young prince was quick to slam the intruder against the wall, placing his forearm roughly against their neck, breathing heavily from the unexpected chase as adrenaline continued to course through his veins. He had a knife sheathed at his side in case anything like this might ever happen--common practice among the royal family. He had never potentially needed it until this moment, however.

"Who are you?!" The prince demanded with his dark eyes locked on those of the other, increasing the pressure on the man's neck as he forcefully removed the hood from his face. He was surprised to see that the trespasser looked as though he was no older than himself, his age seeming to teeter between boy and man. The prince knew better than to underestimate anyone in judgement of their age. "What is your business here?" It had been a long time since he had had this kind of excitement and he honestly quite missed the feeling.[/FONT]

triding towards Levusti with the twinkles of excitement illuminating his eyes, the noble bolted forward. Levusti crouched lower as he waited for the man's punch to the stomach, only to be surprised when he was pinned to the door behind him by the neck with a strong forearm. The man's broad chest heaving rhythmically with each full breath he inspired. "Who are you?!" he barked while driving his arm further into Levusti's throat. The noble threw away the hood that veiled the shame on Levusti's face. "What is your business here?"

With the taller man's arm blocking the air through his trachea and the blood to his head, the wayfarer boy watched the edges of his vision begin to wash away in shadows. His pressure did not relent and Levusti drew his hands to wrest away the man's limb. "S--Sire!" he gasped. "I am naught but a com--commoner! I wish to…to repair city f--fixtures. City officials won't--only fragment of stallum, please!"

For every breath he inhaled, only a trickle of burning oxygen seeped into his lungs. I knew it, I might die here, Levusti thought. Panicked, he shuffled his legs and arms while the world began to swirl, twist, and contort.

I don't want to die!

Levusti swiped his hands forward and seized something loose within his dirty fingers. Maybe hair, maybe clothing, but it didn't matter if it meant survival. He yanked what he had grasped in his hand closer to his body and lifted a leg to kick. In his fright, though, his other leg slipped beneath him and gravity pulled his body towards the ground. Levusti's gaping mouth slammed shut and his teeth pierced through his lip.

There he was, escaping his own death and suddenly creating it. The man's sturdy arm was like a noose, obstructing the air to his lungs and pushing against his throat so hard he wanted to vomit. In a final effort to find freedom, Levusti's weak arms tugged the man's sleeve.

This is it. I'm gone.

he young prince kept his grip steady on the man, listening to his words forced words. Someone breaking into the castle was not a common occurrence since so few were actually brave enough to do it which spoke a lot about this young fellow. He obviously wasn't giving up this fight so easily as he struggled beneath Hadrian's hold.

Wait….did just mention the…stallums? He thought, eyes widening slightly and his grip slightly loosening. The stallums were no common knowledge among the townsfolk anymore and the leaders of the nation wished to keep it that way. Throughout the generations which passed since the great war, the stallums slowly faded from their memories when only the brutality of the war remained. The nobles had decided best to keep them a secret to avoid anyone else trying to use them for immoral reasons. Today the people went about their daily lives, never questioning how things were built or repaired. Yet somehow this one knew about them and this had peaked the prince's interest.

"How do you know about them?" He asked in a voice which held curiosity now instead of urgency. "Ow!" The prince yelped when his hair was suddenly yanked in desperation. He felt the man's weight fall completely against his arm which forced him to release him, almost causing him to fall onto the ground but he managed to catch himself. There was more to this man than met the eye and Hadrian's curiosity had ultimately been peaked.

"Shhhh." The noble ordered when he heard strident footsteps accompanied by loud, elevated conversation. Guards. They needed to get out of here and fast—it was obvious someone had heard to previous commotion and were now coming to investigate. Hadrian would never find out how the man knew of the stallum if he was caught.

"Follow me." He said quietly, grabbing the man's wrist and pulling on it persistently, his dark eyes looking around for the quickest escape route or at least somewhere to hide. His eyes landed on a door just a few feet away. It would have to do. "This way." Hadrian hurriedly moved to the door, pushing against it. The heavy door creaked open stubbornly with enough for and the young prince pushed his way inside, motioning for the man to follow. If they didn't get out of this hallway now it was bad luck for them both.

ir prickled his throat as it flooded to his lungs. Inhalation had never felt so painful before, and neither did biting his own lip. Levusti brush the crimson fluid from his lips and looked toward the man in surprise.

The noble was turned away, listening to some approaching noise: the voices of bewildered guards coming to investigate. The noble shushed Levusti and dragged him away by the wrist. "Follow me," he said, and Levusti did as instructed, perplexed at the man's sudden change of heart. Hurriedly the noble thrusted Levusti into the room where the younger man tripped onto the floor. After a quick survey of the room, it seemed to be a study or a library. A rudimentary contraption was partially assembled on the desk and books on rovasic mechanisms were scattered across the floor.

The man rushed inside and closed the door behind him. The noble turned to Levusti. eyes seeming to say hide! The vagrant's eyes opened wide in understanding and he looked around the room in a unmethodical manner. Seeing the large, tall bookshelf near the door, Levusti rose to his feet and darted to it. Nimble feet scaled the wooden plates towards the top and Levusti slotted himself between the shelf and the ceiling.

"Who goes there!" the guards yelled. A discernible thud! rattled the walls as the adjacent room's door were battered open. "Show yourself!" The clattering of armor plates approached the door of the study and its door, too, was pummeled repeatedly. "Stronger, Marain, hit it stronger!" Two slams rumbled the door latch off the wall.

The door swung open and two guards clad in silver plated armor and amber sashes adorned with the royal coat of arms stood baffled. "Y--Your Royal Highness!" the guard exclaimed and knelt in surprise. "Sire, we hope we haven't disturbed your quietude!" he sputtered. Levusti bit his lip to stifle a laugh. These guards were a joke, useless and foolish as they were. Surely the security of a nation's sovereign warranted better guardsmen.

The guard's subordinate who had also knelt beside him muttered under his breath, "Told you nothing was wrong," and then squeaked in pain as the butt of his superior's spear jabbed him on his knee.

"Prince Hadrian, I do beg your pardon. We had heard a disturbance in this vicinity. Are you safe, Your Royal Highness?" Prince Hadrian, did he say? Levusti felt like a fool--why else would that Doran man previously address him in a similar manner? Here he was, in the presence of royalty, and did not introduce himself or conduct himself in a proper manner. Granted, protocol was the last thing on his mind when he was being suffocated, but still.

nce the other had followed him inside the prince was quick to begin pushing the door back into place, using every bit of strength within him. It was quickly coming to his attention that some of doors in this castle were in need of some serious repairs. The prince's strength was nothing to sneer at and the fact he was having this amount of difficulty moving a door was irritating—not that the doors hefty size was nothing to mock either. Finally managing to get the blasted thing shut, Hadrian turned just in time to observe the trespasser as he effortlessly ascended the wall and wedged himself between the top of the bookshelf and the wall. He was possibly even more skillfully nimble than Hadrian had originally thought.
The young prince snapped out of his bewilderment he realized the steps were now much closer and he needed to quickly find a hiding place. However, the fact that he was not as agile he could not simply climb walls and ceilings to conceal himself. His dark gaze observed the room through darkness, but he didn't have enough time or sharper eyesight to spot a place in time before the door seemed as though it might get ripped clean off the walls by the ogre guards directly behind it.

"Confound it." He muttered to himself as the door finally gave in and opened, sunlight streaming into the room to reveal the lone prince standing there like a fool. He was quick to straighten his composure and turned to unleash his nastiest of scowls upon the guardsman who dared interrupt him during his "studies".

"You blathering idiots!" He exclaimed in frustration, rolling his eyes as they dropped to a knee and bowed in apology. Now, Hadrian's father had a tendency to hire men who lacked brains in turn for their brawn. They solely looked daunting, however lacked the art of true intimidation. The men who were true skilled warriors were reserved to knight positions, not lowly guards. Noted that there had actually been commotion and they had not been wrong in investigating it, Hadrian wasn't going to tell them that of course.

"I have now lost utter train of thought due to your careless banging about!" Hadrian rubbed at his temples as though he felt a twinge of a headache. Being a royal provided many opportunities to polish on one's acting abilities and Hadrian was by far one of the best. "You fools! Does it appear as though I am harmed? The only harm that has been done is by your hasty assumptions!" Hadrian spat at them, moving brown tresses of hair which had made their way into his eyes.

"Now leave me! Before I lose my patience and demand your salaries be cut!" The young prince demanded. The two guards clumsily got to their feet and continued to apologize and bow profusely as they made their way towards the door.

The young noble mumbled curses under his breath as he pushed at the door once the guardsman had finally taken their leave. The kingdom was doomed If these were the only men left to "serve and protect".

"You have managed to get us both into quite a problematic situation." If Hadrian's father ever found out he was harboring a fugitive within the castle he would be punished without a doubt. However that didn't matter to him as he was much too intrigued by the hopes and possibilities of escaping this prison. Perhaps this man held the opportunity he had been hoping for.

he guards scrambled to their feet and fled, the subordinate guard's gripes muffled as the prince shut the door behind them. Turning around, the prince waited until the dense guards were out of earshot before continuing. "You have managed to get us both into quite a problematic situation."

Levusti slid off the shelf and dropped onto the floor, dusting off his clothing. Levusti bowed deeply at the waist and outstretched his hands with one palm turned upward and the other turned forward. "Prince Flagstone II, Your Royal Majesty, by Your Guidance may I find prosperity," he began before awkwardly dropping to a knee. Though he had lived in this Province for three months already, he was still unaccustomed to the kneeling gesture--especially around royalty. He was unsure if there was a special greeting to use, so he used one he typically used from his own experiences. "I am Levusti, the One who Seeks Truth. I do beg Your Royal Majesty's pardon for our unseemly acquaintance.

"I am a Low Magician of the Lann Imperial Court," Levusti said as he stood, "By the imperial sages have I been formally trained in the Third and Seventh Schools of Rovasic Magics. Or rather, I was," he muttered, looking away in embarrassment.

Levusti assessed the prince carefully as he spoke. The Prince Flagstone seemed to be older than Levusti, but not by much. He was clearly a man, his already tall stature and royal bearing gave him an air of masculinity that seemed to surround him like an aura. Perhaps half a head taller, the prince must have been strong--a fact his aching throat confirmed. In a bout with swords or without, the Prince would easily overpower Levusti.

He realized he'd already been spared, so felt obliged to continue conversing. Besides, he'd probably be brought to his knees again should he try to escape. "One could say I'm a traveller now. I am skilled in rudimentary spells all of the magics, but flame and life magics are indeed my specialties." The younger bit his lip pensively as he tried to figure how to ask his request while still maintaining tact. "However, Your Royal Highness, I understand I am not in a place to ask of you so, and I thank you for your enduring mercy--but I require but a fragment of the nation's stallum."

Levusti felt unsure, at something the Prince had said earlier: How do you know about them? Wasn't it common knowledge? Or is it something kept secret in this nation?

adrian's dark gaze watched the man as he so effortlessly slid onto the ground from the top of the shelf, an eyebrow rising in marvel. However, it wasn't long before he had already dropped to one of his knees and it honestly made the prince feel uncomfortable. He was used to this treatment within the castle from maids and guardsman, however he was rarely allowed outside of the castle—at least when it was announced who he was—so he was unaccustomed to outsiders speaking to him in such a manner. Hadrian never felt like royalty and therefore did not wish to be treated as such.

"My apologies as well." The young prince spoke, noticing the cut in the man's lip from when he had been involuntarily strangled. For all Hadrian had known he had been there with negative intentions and he was still kicking himself for not realizing he had been hiding behind the curtains. Usually the prince was not so careless, however the situation was proving to be quite different from the norm. He's a magician as well… Hadrian thought to himself, having met very few in his lifetime. While they were plentiful in other regions, it had been a long time since many came lived here. One of Hadrian's grandfathers had been quite paranoid and often suspected magicians of everything if something went wrong. There hadn't been one in the court of Flagstone since his ancestor had banished them.

"Slow down, slow down." Hadrian spoke as the man's quick speech pattern was a bit too much for him to register what he was saying before he went onto the next thing. He certainly seemed to be in a hurry, yet he wasn't planning on letting him go away any time soon. Not to mention it was going to be a bit of challenge getting him out of here without anyone noticing. He was very intrigued by the man's skills in magics and had always been curious since he had never been taught in such areas. Ah, the stallums again… He thought to himself, scratching his stubbled face as he thought, or more rather plotted. He remembered him bringing them up before, but missed what he had said afterwards which he presumed to be the reason he needed them. He needed to see this man in real action before he could do any serious planning.

"What do you require this stallum for, traveler?" He inquired as he gazed at him curiously. Hadrian wasn't going to try to cash in on his hopes of an adventure until he knew what this man of capable of and after he did some more research of the going ons with his iron fisted ruler who was wreaking havoc for the stallums in other nations.

evusti put a hand to his chin in thought, sorting though the words in his mind to make sure he was going to be understood since he had a tendency to ramble. "Sire, I have need of the stallum only to repair town fountains," he chuckled. It seemed ridiculous that this was the reason he'd needed the stallum but it was truthful--in a way. "I do beg pardon, Your Majesty, but your appointed city officials are quite ignorant of the city's needs. The fixtures have ruptured and flooded half of the city district in which I lived--it's been about a week and it's still a problem, so I've determined to fix them."

Levusti felt as if the older man wouldn't believe the offbeat explanation, so he delved into more words as he usually did. "I know it doesn't make sense that I'd need a stallum fragment for that. Though it was said I'd do well in rovasic magic, my body doesn't seem to naturally draw rovas in like most magic adepts and the alchemists. It's mostly the reason why I never had ascended the imperial ranks of the army.
