Luascent Lore
•·················•·················•
Luascent, often shortened to Lua, is a tall city built upon a massive base. About a tenth of the city is directly supported by the island while the rest is built above the sea. After the entirety of the platform was built upon the population continued to increase and so they built up. Buildings of varying qualities are built atop each other to reach towering heights. Primarily wooden houses are coated in thick sealing paints. Initially, coloured in bright dyes, most have faded to a paler version of their original colour. Many of the buildings, especially those furthest from the island are in poor condition and have limited spacing due to population growth. It is becoming increasingly less common for residents to live alone and previously larger houses have been divided into multiples.

The Crescent is the island which supports Luascent. The resources it has provided are a major contributing factor to the growth Luascent has had. Despite this, Luascent is rapidly outgrowing the island which supports it. Its previously large forested area grows increasingly smaller each year. Only a small portion of the island is available to the general public.

The Commons refers both to a large portion of the area within Luascent and to the majority of the population. Luascents working class, more or less.

The Upper Sphere is the small portion of Luascent's population that has accumulated wealth or status. It is a position in flux and few families remain there for more than a couple of generations. Most of those in the Upper Sphere live in the Grand Hotel the tallest building in Luascent. A large white building — one of the few built on the island. Originally it towered above the rest of the town, but the rest of the city is slowly catching up. Despite the majority of the Upper Sphere living there, the grand hotel is far from an exclusive building and there are many people of all varieties and states living or staying there.

The Underbelly is the portion of the town built beneath the foundation right up against the island — and partially carved into it. Most of those who live in the Underbelly are people who've been dealt a bad hand or received great misfortune. However, a place out of sight and mind of the authorities is a good place for illicit activities to brew.

The Mayor is a position that is elected by popular vote. Anyone can run for the position and they serve for five-year terms after the election. Originally a highly influential and powerful position the role of mayor has largely become that of a public figure and occasional scapegoat.

The Council is the true source of power in Luascent's governing body. Originally formed as advisors to the mayor, the council has long overshadowed his authority. The council consists of five members, each appointed by the mayor. This position is held until death, resignation, or the occasional disastrous affair.

There are a variety of jobs and professions in Luascent. Those boasting the largest number of workers are fishers and whalers, professions which contribute a great deal to the economy. Divers, although comprising a smaller portion of the population, are often spoken of in the same breath. It is a job which becomes riskier each year as divers are required to swim further out and go deeper to find salvageable resources. But there are persons of all professions to be found in Luascent — shopkeepers, entertainers, crafters, and builders alike. Luascent has an official currency in the form of coins, simply called coins or else coppers, however, direct trading of goods and services is very common.
