Northern Lights! How do they work?! They work about as well in Skyrim as they do in the real world, only you'll see them far more often at lower latitudes while playing Skyrim than you will at lower latitudes in real life.

Shadowmere is one hell of a fighter, wouldn't you say? Taking on so many Stormcloaks at once!

... holy shit the goddamn northern lights?
I love you Bethesda. So. Much.

My guy is basically a Breton Battlemage.

Almost done with the college storyline, and haven't actually done hardly any story missions. I literally stopped just before the Greybeards mission so that I could go become a mage. I haven't even joined a side in the war yet. Mostly been doing village related side missions, bounties, and becoming a Thane in several villages. But I am level 25 and and have some interesting gear if I say so myself.

Specialize in One-handed weapons [ War Axes], restoration, blacksmithing, and conjuring.

Mage character is level 31 now.

Destruction is a hard choice to learn as your main damage output, you constantly run into mana issues, and the damage does not really compare unless you dual cast. I still have to see the upper reaches of the skill, but if you plan on levelling ANY non-combat skills it's definitely not an easy choice.

Some mage 'exploity' things I've found.

Training alteration: buy the spell waterbreathing, stand in any pool (the water under dragonreach for example) and spam cast it. (needs a decent manapool or some levels in alteration already)

Training restoration: find the spell equilibrium(alteration school, can by found in labyrinthian) use it to hurt yourself for mana, cast fast heal... repeat.

and...

Training illusion: buy the spell courage... Spam it on random passerby's (or on Lydia)

Started a thief/assassin/mage character... call it a trickster. Investing heavily in sneak, illusion, and one-handed weapons. Boy does it level fast when you pickpocket and sneak all the time. Getting troubles because I leveled my non combat skills first, but with 15 times backstab damage for daggers there's still a lot that's possible for me. (17 x 15 = 255 not taking into account dual wield or power-attacks... as you can see my dagger damage has plenty of room to grow still)

So far fury has proven to be an effective group killer as well. Hoping to see this character grow the most out of all of them.

I had a Blood Dragon and two Normal Dragons have a three-way melee above an Imperial encampment. Where I hid in a tent.

Had to re-roll due to some system issues. So I'm an Ork Facebreaker. Some of the cinematic kills with a two handed axe are just delicious (I split a sabercat's face in two, through the mouth.) I decided to give my opponents a chance one dungeon and just looted everything beyond the overload point....It diddn't help them....much.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I've discovered it's possible (with enchantments) to reduce the cost of a single type of spell (in my case destruction) to below 0%

In the same vein, it's possible to reach 95% magic resist, with 80% magic absorb.

yes, my breton mage is a magic immune, mana-less spell-slinger that can kill a giant in 5 hits... And I'm pretty sure that the stagger effect from two-handed casting would make this tactic work on ANY difficulty level... Now to boost my health to above 250 to avoid insta-kills.

I'm considering making a new character that's just straight up ICE for everything. Because I've been up against guys that are really powerful with ice and for a LONG time I had the lady Illia from the Darklight Tower quest as my follower. She straight up FUCKED GUYS UP with her ice spells. The Stamina damage it does along with slowing down opponents just seems so utterly brutal.

My current guy I like what he specializes in as is. . . but I still have an urge to make just a straight up Ice specialist.

Any tips?

On a side note, I've yet to run across any WHITE MAGE robes or clothes of any kind. Mainly just black mages and necromancers with a few blue mages tossed in. Have you guys found any? Or is it not just me that seems to have noticed an utter LACK of white mages?

i fuckin LOVE skyrimshanking motherfuckers, screaming and running from giants trolls and dragons before finding some cheating cover like spot where i can nail them with a million arrows and take very little damage.

Most useful tip I can give you, is to get enchanting to 100 ASAP, and fill out the entire middle row of that specific talent tree. The idea behind that is that somewhere along the line, you should pick up both the "fortify destruction" enchant AND the "fortify destruction + magicka regen" enchant.

Enchant an amulet, ring and hood with fortify destruction (preferably over 20%). Then, when you reach level 100, get rid of whatever enchanted chestpiece you have and get a new chestpiece and enchant it with both fortify destruction and fortify destruction + Magicka regen. Should give you a chestpiece with 40% + cost reduction for destruction spells... Together with the rest of your gear, that's more than 100% reduction, meaning manaless destruction spells...you can spam them all day.

I found the cheapest way of getting grand souls is to complete Asura's quest (go to the mage in winterhold tavern at the end, don't deliver it to Asura herself) Should give you a permanent black soul gem. (Asura's star: Black) You can then just find a weak bandit, bind it, and fast travel to wherever you enchant at.

Another tip I have is to take at LEAST one other, more defensive oriented magic school on the side. I ran with Alteration(for the magic resist and armor spells) and Restoration(for wards and heals)... But I think Conjuration could work too. Heavy armor works too, I guess, but that means you're forgoing a lot of the useful clothing early on in the game (before your enchanting starts kicking in), you can always switch to heavy armor later. (even then, the alteration master level spell kicks ass)

As far as the white mages go... There's ONE mage in the college that specializes in restoration, and she gets ridiculed a lot. One of the things she says is that she gets told to leave restoration to priests. Maybe that will answer at least part of your question.
