"The body of man is unsuitable for the world.
We have no talon, no claw
No wing, no maw
Eyes that are un-keen
and a skin easy to bleed

All that we may boast is a spirit unique
And a mind at the peak
That we may control our destiny
With stone and steel
And avoid becoming
The world's meal
"

Year XXXX of Remnant. The ancient enemy, the Grimm, have vanished from the world. For quite some time, men enjoyed rest from a looming, soulless enemy that haunted the very rise of civilization. And yet, in the words of a wise man...

"Fear not what lies in the darkness beyond, but who."

Intrinsic to our nature, war was inevitable. How it would be fought, long after the times of Grimm, was amorphous at best. What had transpired was something pulled straight from a nightmare.

Project FANG, developed by scientists and engineers of Atlas, was soon to become the next plague upon Remnant.

A nightmarish fusion of artificial intelligence and the boundless freedom of nature itself, the Grimm were replaced by something less foul, but infinitely more dangerous.

Introduction

This is a roleplay for an AU RWBY roleplay involving a 'future' Remnant plagued by the creations of a military warmachine gone awry.

Things will be relatively the same as in a standard RWBY roleplay; you will play as Hunters or Huntresses, called upon as their skills are sought to fight against the newborn darkness. There will not be an academy setting for this roleplay, so if that's what you're seeking look elsewhere.

I'm looking for a tight-knit group of a handful of players... somewhere around 6-8 players who are dedicated. Posting schedules will be determined per-round, likely no longer than a week at max.

[bg=#79addd]A Return to Nature[/bg]
[bg=#79addd][/bg]

Unchecked, the piracy of Vacuo's citizens upon surrounding nations could not be stifled by the loose-fitting government standing over the western continent. Angered by the unmendable situation outside of its political sphere, the nation that had the most to lose from the piracy, Atlas, opted to take action rather than simply stand by. Of course, the 'informal' Vacuo governing body could not stand by as their shores were invaded either, and the first war since the Great War had begun, much to the chagrin of the surrounding world. Adverse from the idea of breaking what had been maintained for so long, Vale and Mistral stood by and watched.

In the face of desolate landscapes, a determined population, and no end in sight to the continued defeat of their own troops, Atlas would become impatient in their attempts to stifle the nuisance that existed within Remnant once and for all. A project, built to relieve Atlas of the burden of death and resource, came into fruition.

Project FANG, developed by esteemed scientist Majorelle Powder, was a blending of metal and flesh to create a force unable to be removed. The thought in the think tank went, "If they wish to draw things out, then we will do the same." What better way to force Vacuo's hand than to use nature itself; the one thing in the world that was wholly unstoppable.

Project FANG centered around the creation of an advanced supercomputer, dubbed NORA-1, which had control over an army of minute nanomachines specializing in manipulating genes within a living system. Placed within vats of bio-matter, NORA-1 need only think it to create it.

In a matter of days, the supercomputer had developed a number of terrifying creatures hellbent on occupying Vacuo lands, embedding themselves as very facets of their local fauna. So deeply ingrained into Vacuo lands, the creatures could be given commands to spring from the shadows to wreak havoc upon resistance.

The strategy was so effective that the people of Vacuo had to go into hiding to avoid the monstrous menace. The land had become so hellishly hostile to humanity that Vacuo's once desolate landscape began to return to greenery, unperturbed by artificial influence.

Where once occupation and control over Vacuo had been Atlas' main objective, what remained of the place had ensured they needn't even attempt colonization. Project FANG was shut down, and NORA-1's system turned offline. But such was not the end of the nightmare, as a bug in the system had prevented the nanomachines from prompting a forced apoptosis in the creatures that had been created. With NORA-1 offline and the creatures still standing, they were free to roam as wild animals rather than AI-controlled military units.

Vacuo was left with the living hell, and Atlas dared not attempt to exorcise their own creations. Years passed as Atlas enjoyed peace from their vanquished nuisance until nature itself took revenge. Unhinged, the wild creations began to spread further than Vacuo, infesting the lands beyond to torture even more poor souls.

As the Grimm had passed from this world, they were replaced by monsters of a different name.

They were called Behemoths.

Though the practices of Hunters and Huntresses had slowly begun to die out without the presence of Grimm, their services were called upon again to combat the spreading menace whose very beings had become one with nature.

The Second Hunt had begun.

Retired Huntsmen rose from their places of peace to return to the fight against a new enemy. Bloodlines looked to their children to take up the mantle once more. Militaries scoured their forces for those most fit to join the cause. As entire towns and cities fell to the might of a savage and diverse enemy built to kill and persevere, every ounce of help was needed to stave off extinction.

So goes the spreading creed of the Second Huntsmen;

"The enemy breathes our air. Drinks our waters. Sleeps in our lands.
They care not for morality or peace. Not for friendship or progress.
They are like animals, true to the blood of lions and wolves.
But they are no mere animals.
Monsters, all of them.
Bred by the amoral mind of a machine created to kill and maim.
To terrify and torture.

By our human hands,
Hand in hand once again
We shall turn against the shadows in the trees, in the skies, in the waters
And we shall unleash our own fangs.
Our own claws.
"

Name:
Tama Kuro Anaru

Age:
20

Sex:
Male

Birthplace:
Vale

Personality:
  • Extroverted.
  • Determined.
  • Kind.
  • Naive.
  • Insecure.
  • Superstitious.

Biography:
Tama grew up in the city of Vale. His mother and father ran a simple dust shop after retiring from being huntsman to take care of their son and Tama's older brother: Shiro. Shiro grew up to be an inventor who would later "create" their grandfather and develop Tama's weapon, but before that he tortured his younger brother with scary stories and curses making him the fool he is today. Out of spite, Tama steered as far away from his brother as he could. This led to him often passing by the hairs on his neck and defaulting to brawn to solve situations.

Tama figured that if he could overpower anything he would be pretty OK in life, but when it came down to emotion he could never fortify himself enough. Eventually, the brothers' grandfather died and Tama who found comfort in him, when he received only disappointment in his parents and ridicule from his brother, was devastated. Tama eventually turned to fighting to handle his anger, but unbeknownst to anyone Shiro was working on a way to make a man immortal.

Tama gained a reputation on the street and started getting jumped returning home often bruised and bleeding; At the same time Shiro had finally finished his project and informed his grandfather on the current situation of the family. As Tama continued to climb in the leaderboards of underground fighting rings, Shiro and their grandfather, now named GPU 2.0, got to work on a weapon for Tama to use defensively. Eventually, their goals crossed paths with one another at a point that the news of the monsters invading Vacuo and other parts of the world reached them. Tama's father was then considering joining the fight. Adhering to his fear of losing his father, Tama switched places with him, and joined the fight in his stead.

Weaponry/Equipment:
Point Blank Fist
This weapon allows the user to fire a beam of blue energy from the palm and slash at their enemies with its four thick metal claws. The claws can also use energy for the beam to become extended via plasma projections. This making it easier to shred through metal. Its wide enough to be used as a buckler shield and only covers the forearm.
latest

The Claw
A standard gauntlet that can be found anywhere, this weapon has a tether of energy to help climb up mountains and claws to get into the rocks. It is slim and sleek looking unlike the Point Blank Fist. Tama of course custom ordered his so where you see yellow its green to match his hair and the white is a deeper black than what is already black.
Asian_CyberPunk_by_Tyshea.jpg

Semblance:
Tama's semblance is to be incredibly tough. He is able to take hits that normal people could not take and survive in deadly situations/states for much longer than the average person. This however does not increase his strength just durability.

Name: Leonia Kokinos
Age: 26
Sex: Female
Birthplace: Vacuo

Personality
  • Courageous
  • Reliable
  • Selfless
  • Aggressive
  • Distrustful
  • Blunt
Biography
She had once heard stories of Vacuo before the behemoths came, where the weather was rough and its people were rougher. It was a far different Vacuo than what she had grown to known. Her earliest memories were ones of conflict and flight through the thick woods and jungles, seeking refuge from the plague of nightmarish beasts. Many loved ones, including her father and brothers, were taken right before her eyes, yet she, as a small child, could do nothing but watch helplessly. Fighting, hunting, scavenging old ruins, and stealing from others; as she grew, she did everything she could to survive and provide for her mother and the others who they traveled with and for a time, they managed to eke out a living. That was until one of the others brought a behemoth right into their camp, unaware that it had been tracking them. Her mother, more concerned over Leonia's wellbeing, put herself in harm's way and sacrificed herself to ensure that the beast was brought down. Grief-stricken, she chose to separate from the group and headed east to Vale, tired from the struggles of survival and the loss of so many precious to her. Unfortunately, it appeared the threat of the behemoths had spread further out then they all thought, for the Second Hunt had begun. She would never forgive these huntsmen and huntresses who had chose to sit back and let them die one by one, but she would still fight alongside them until they purged all traces of the behemoth off the face of Remnant.

Weaponry/Equipment
Furious Thermopylae
A combination of three weapons that Leonia uses in conjunction in battle.
  • Alekto - Once her mother's shield, this dust-based device uses a lightning dust crystal to project a force field whose size and shape depends on the desire of the user and the amount of power used. Alongside the crystal, the shield can also utilize dust vials to allow for an assortment of uses for it, such as firing projectiles or creating physical barricades.
  • Megaera - On the same gauntlet as the attached Alekto shield, extending past the fingers, is a long punch spike, roughly a foot in length. While commonly used to deal extraordinary amounts of damage with her semblance, the spike can occasionally exude trace amounts of dust energy due to its connection to the shield.
  • Tilphousia - Her late father's glaive. The weapon is relatively standard, save for the handle being collapsible for ease in travel and allowing for the use of close quarters combat as a sword.
Semblance:
Charge
Leonia's semblance gives her the ability to propel herself in a given direction as if launched by a cannon. While she can use this repeatedly, the speed and distance she is propelled are fixed, forcing her to be creative she wants to stop in mid-flight.

Name:
Matthew "Matt" Lohan
Age:
24
Sex:
Male
Birthplace:
Mistral
Personality:
  • Brave, but hot headed.
  • Kind, but easy to trick.
  • Quick thinker on his feet, not so much when it comes to making plans.

Biography: (Short and sweet)
Matt was born into a family of warriors, back when the Grim existed his family was fighting alongside everyone else, while not enough to gain any sort of fame, they were still known by the higher ups. Being born into this family for Matt meant he was going to be a fighter regardless of the current peace, because of his parents' paranoid tendencies that the grim or possibly something worse would appear. From an early age Matt began training slowly building his skills, after some time his father showed him how to black smith armour and weapons, making his own Axe Rifle and Armour, his mother showing him how to add the rifle to the axe and showing him how to use his semblance.
As he aged his skills grew more and more, with his semblance and skills perfected he was ready to discover the world, but just as he was planning to leave he learn of the new threat that the world was facing, setting his plans he doned his armour and took up his axe, ready for anything...

Weaponry/Equipment:
Axe Rifle
[spoili]
ae465a29aba0fc13e5534883db20bda6.jpg

[/spoili]
A large great axe that has a trigger for a rifle at the base of the handle, changing to this from takes a couple seconds as the rifle prepares to fire.

Steel Armour
[spoili]
a92d85728700125672e7b4f4e49765b8.jpg

[/spoili]
Armour he created while learning smithing from his father, since then Matt has been slowly working on it trying to keep it sturdy as he attempts to perfect his craft.
Semblance:
Lightweight:
As heavy and obstructive his weapon and amour are he's easily able to move unaffected by either of their weight, these only effect his armour and axe.

Name: Lapis Himmel
Age: 22
Sex: Female
Birthplace: Atlas
Personality:
  • A planner
  • Logical
  • Cool-headed
  • Survivor's guilt
  • Does not handle disruptions to her routine well.
  • Tries not to get close to others.
Biography:
Before she joined the Second Hunt, Lapis was a member of Atlas' military. She was a soldier during the war, and was remodeled into the combat cyborg she is today due to injuries sustained during the fighting before Project FANG turned the tide in a truly nightmarish way. She is an excellent solider, able to keep a cool head under fire, which may have contributed to her being one of the few or only survivors of her squad several times over. The survival streak continued during the dangerous early days of the Second Hunt as the Behemoths proved to be more than Atlas had bargained for, further cementing her reputation as a lone wolf... or an angel of death. A reputation that weighs heavily upon her, as she blames herself for so many fallen compatriots.

Weaponry/Equipment:
Assault Caliber
Lapis' primary weapon is the Assault Caliber system, a number of small remote-controlled drones that respond to her will. An example of modern Atlas technology, the versatile weapons platform can be used for both close and long-range combat and defense. When used in melee, the drones extend energy blades and stay close to Lapis, swinging out to strike in series or in concert. Used as ranged weapons, they are deployed at distance to fire on a designated target, although they ca also interlock to fire more powerful beams. Defensively, multiple drones (at least three) can work in concert to project an energy field between them.

Cybernetic armor and enhancements
Lapis' body has been augmented with extensive cybernetics, making her stronger and tougher than an ordinary human, enhancing her reflexes, and otherwise making her a more effective Huntress. She herself is an expensive and versatile piece of modular military hardware. Her signature blue armor links to hardpoints mounted in her body, for ease of movement and to power its systems. Her armor is light, but allows for limited flight capability.

Semblance:
Auspex Arcanum: Lapis's semblance is a sort of clairvoyance. She has a radar-like ability to sense and track everything around her, in full 3D space. The range on her abilities is usually limited (probably 10 or 20 m?), and also limits the range of her Assault Caliber.

Name:
Tsion Rayjun

Age: 17

Sex: All the time Male

Birthplace: Mistral

Personality-
  • Quickwitted
  • Friendly
  • Loyal
  • Impulsive
  • Insecure
  • Rebellious
Biography: Tsion grew up relishing the tales and legends of old Hunters and Huntresses, idolizing the lifestyle of a time long past. Growing up in the slums of Mistral, he saw little opportunity for himself. The thought of living and dying a mediocre life horrified him, and propelled his yearning to become a Hunter even further. What once was a childhood dream, became a teenage obsession. An old veteran hunter offered to teach him, which Tsion accepted happily. He spent every ounce of his energy dedicated to learning to fight an enemy that was long gone; much to the chagrin of his parents, and amusement to everyone around him. Imagine everyone's surprise when the call for hunters to return came. Overjoyed, he answered the call immediately, his life's goal now in reach. He set out in search of his own personal legend.

Weaponry/Equipment:

Smashmouth: As the creative name implies, Smashmouth; is Tsion's main offensive tool. Dust can be placed into the center ring, giving the blade a temporary elemental effect. Smashmouth is Tsion's own creation.

screenshot039.png
Zappy: A multipurpose gauntlet Tsion wears on his left arm. The gauntlet covers his entire forearm, and can be used to block/deflect lighter attacks. The gauntlet can also be used offensively to punch. Zappy earns it's namesake from it's ability to discharge a large shock that can stun enemies. This only works if they are touched with the center of the palm, and overheats the gauntlet, preventing Tsion from using that ability for a while. Zappy also has minor magnetic properties, and is polarized to Smashmouth, allowing Tsion to magnetically recall Smashmouth should he ever be disarmed. Zappy is the invention of Tsion's mentor.
latest
PowerFistCA2.jpg
Semblance-
Focus:
Dubbed by Tsion as "Focus", Tsion's semblance heightens his senses, boosting his reaction time. While active, his semblance makes the world appear as if it's moving in slow motion. Allowing him to see and react to attacks he wouldn't have normally been able to. Normally used in small bursts as prolonged use burns through his aura very quickly.

[BCOLOR=transparent]Ivory was born into a well-off family with plenty of technology to spread around. She was born alongside her brother, but she was a few minutes earlier, so she's older than he is. Biography:
Vermilion was born into a well-off family with plenty of technology to spread around. He was born alongside his sister, but he was a few minutes later, so she's older than he is. If only by a little. Vermilion always at the archery range, training to be faster and more precise in his shots. Eventually, he was allowed to go hunt on his own.
Vermilion battled alongside his sister, watching her back and making sure she didn't get into too much trouble. If she ended up hurting herself, then it would just end up causing trouble for him. They faced many behemoths as they survived with each other. Though there was one behemoth they couldn't fight. It was a stronger one, one that they had never seen before. They fled and went to seek out the help of other Hunters and Huntresses. Vermilion just wanted to keep his sister from dying while fighting, and that's why he has gone along with his sister's whim to join others.

Name: Sino
Age: 22
Sex: Male
Birthplace: Atlas
Personality:
  • With a long and naturally wet fuse, it takes a lot to get him angry.
  • A blend of stubbornness and determination means that whatever he sets his mind to he will get done.
  • Sino naturally is good at following orders. Blame his inner soldier or be racist and say that's just how most Atlasians are, but it's true.
  • When Sino does finally blow, it's like watching the largest volcano going off. It's beautiful, but you should probably run away.
  • The man doesn't know his own strength, can't blame him. So he'll basically hit you in the back of the head and think he just tapped you.
  • Blunt. He has no sense of tact. He'll tell you why you're wrong in the worst way possible. Might as well be hitting you with an emotional brick.
Biography: Sino never wanted to become a Huntsman. The fact that they were even still needed was strange to him. The Grimm had disappeared leaving nothing to worry about, so why bother? Then again, he had grown up safely in the heart of Atlas. Surrounded by the latest in military technology, what did he have to fear? Anything that wasn't human or faunus would be hard pressed to even enter the city if they weren't supposed to be there.

But when FANG went out of control, the relevance of Hunters became obvious once more. If anything they were more important. See, FANG isn't attracted to just negative emotions. If it's human, they instinctively want to kill it. That's what they were designed to do, but since they've gotten out of hand it's become a problem for even Atlas.

Sino didn't see this as a problem the Hunters should fix. He saw it as a problem specifically for Atlas to fix. So, naturally, he decided to become a Huntsman to solve that problem himself. Of course he had to go through training, but his stubbornness and determination saw him through that rather quickly.
Weaponry/Equipment:
He wields a broad axe that can turn into an lmg with deadly efficiency.
Semblance: Sino can can imbue his weapon with energy, making the blade sharper then feasibly possible. Only works when his weapon is an axe, and not an LMG.

@ShiroKiyoshi
Putting aside the modest writing, there seem to be inconsistencies or curiosities in his backstory.
What necessarily makes his brother and grandfather insane? Why would his mother be suicidal, much less kill someone else? Why'd he put his energy into street-fighting (as in, what were his thought processes to lead him there after what had happened with his family?).
As Tama is right now, he appears a flimsy, and the writing has a number of mistakes that reach that threshold of appearing "non-accidental".
I cannot accept Tama.

@CasketCase
Fyi, Vale is East of Vacuo! x3
Looks good. Looking at her image though... are those real ears? Is she a faunus?
Having roleplayed with you before I'm already confident in your writing.
Accepted.

@Don
Like Shiro, the writing presents to me something lackluster. His biography comes off as bland and uninteresting, and coupled with the copious use of commas inappropriately doesn't bode well. Plus you never sent me that PM with additional character information, so either you didn't read fully or forgot, which also doesn't bode well.
I cannot accept Matt.

@R-9 Pilot
Is Assault Caliber limited when using her semblance because focus is adjusted? Also give her semblance a fancy name! That's another RWBY element.
I should note that as far as her enhancements go, she'd have achieved "huntress status" in terms of physical ability moreso through her augmentations, leveling the playing field where other huntsmen attained similar ability through physical training.
Accepted.

@InkaDinkaDoo
Love the weapon name. Tsion looks good.
Accepted!

@★Under The Stars★
When you say that they were hunting "monsters" for fun, were these Behemoths they were hunting, or something else? Because the only "monsters" to exist in the RWBY-universe were the Grimm (which have since disappeared in this rp's universe), leaving only mundane wildlife to hunt.

@Crysodic
O-oh... I see. A pair. I was confused at first when I saw the same paragraph in the bio. That being said, the writing is, in much the same manner as for those previously reviewed, not quite up to par with what I'm looking for.
In addition, while I understand the reasoning behind copying a paragraph for the bio, it still comes off as lazy.
I cannot accept Vermilion.

@Beowulf
*Affected
It's come to my attention, having now reviewed 4 sheets featuring the same writing mistakes, that I should probably post this:
Rules for Comma Usage
How to use a semicolon - The Oatmeal

I hate be blunt about it, but it's clear to me a few of you are using commas where semicolons should be used.
On that note, as much as I like Sino's personality, the subsequent writing appears broken (though his actual story isn't terrible).
I cannot accept Sino.

The dreaded semicolon. I shall do my best to fix everything.

Gah, I knew I forgot something, but yes, she is a faunus. As for the image itself, I think the ears are just for style.

Not exactly sure how I confused continents, but it seems I did when I wrote out the backstory. It has been corrected.

Is Assault Caliber limited when using her semblance because focus is adjusted? Also give her semblance a fancy name! That's another RWBY element.

I'm bad with fancy names, but I'll see what I can do.

Crystal Eye? Absolute Domain?

I'm fine with her augs just putting her on par with the others. It is more for fluff than any expectation of actual power, anyway. Can't go beating someone else at their own Semblance's game using technology, for example.

I didn't think of a weapon only usable with an active Semblance, but that is a pretty cool idea. So, let's go with it. I do figure Lapis' is fairly low-impact in terms of overall aura expenditure, so she could keep it up a fairly long time. I should probably give her less outlandish weapons for back-ups, shouldn't I?

Completely rewrote Sino's history. I hope three paragraphs are still considered short and sweet.

I'll make edits to Ivory's history and make sure that the backstory says Behemoths. They fought quite a few before they encountered a larger, stronger one. Sorry I didn't make that all that clear~

Also, is Ivory accepted? Or is she denied? You didn't say. XD

I have updated my own bio, hopefully its better now.

@Beowulf
Reads much better. Accepted!

@R-9 Pilot
I moreso meant that it seems her Semblance draws attention, thus limiting the effectiveness of Assault Caliber. It was a clarification question, rather than a suggestion for change. If her Semblance requires "attention" then her ability to manipulate Assault Caliber at longer ranges is lowered; that's how it works out, right?

@★Under The Stars★
You're good. She's accepted, though considering there's still problems with your partner's CS...

@Crysodic
The beginning portion of the bio is still a carbon copy, and the second portion is just reworded. I understand I specified the bio should be "short and sweet" but it should also give me a further window into the character's identity. If it's just a rephrasing of another's biography, then it offers me no insight as to what makes the character unique.

@Beowulf
Reads much better. Accepted!

@R-9 Pilot

If I may speak in defense of Crysodic, then I would say it makes at least a little sense that the bio is similar to Ivory's.

Considering the two are twins, they get a feel for how the other thinks and, because of this, they may have a similar way of approaching, describing, feeling, and interacting in situations. The first paragraph, I believe, is supposed to plant the idea that the twins have the same background and they were placed on equal footing as they grew up.

The second paragraph is to describe his outlook of the same situations that the two went through.

However, if the issue does not strictly lie in the idea that they have gone through many of the same events, I can talk to Crysodic and get them to describe a different chain of events for how their character might follow Ivory or for how their character might end up wanting to fight with other Hunters and Huntresses of their own volition.

Ah, that makes sense now. And yes, it would work out that way. Lapis can only keep track of so many things at once, so she would be less effective at using her weapon and trying to keep track of everything around her at once. And that would probably mean reduced effective range, if she could usually go for much longer range on attacks.

I imagine her fighting style when operating with her Semblance up would be a bit more defensive, as she can detect and react to enemies all around her, but the actual attacking would be a bit more on "autopilot" so to speak. Less sophisticated, and staying within the range of her radar-like sense in order to respond fast enough.

I'm not sure I'm making any more sense. Hm.
