Rules of Nature OOC

Yo! Ready to start a war against magic? Haha.

It's going to be a war against capitalism more'n anything but I like the spirit.

Oh, also, feel free to take the mechanical sheets right from the examples, or you can ask me to fill yours out for you if you're not comfortable sorting the numbers.

Don't worry about optimal builds; this isn't D&D

Oh man, there's manatech? Exactly what I was hoping to see! I have a couple questions regarding character creation but I'll hold off on those until all the lore and rules references are up in case they get answered there.

Ask now because there is a non-zero chance they won't

OK, I'll fire away - they're basically all mechanics related as while I have a rough concept for my character I'm waiting for the lore to go up before I start colouring them in as it were:
1. Am I right in assuming that XP costs are cumulative (i.e. in order to have a skill at Level 2 you need to pay the cost for level 1 as well)?
2. I see that some of the combat block stats refer to specific foci - will there be a specific list of foci coming with the rules references or are they more things that get worked out in discussion with you?
3. In terms of where Knowledge, Familiarity and Training come in, I'm a little confused based on what's here so far. Am I right in saying that the intention is for these to be boosts to 3 skills where those skills relate to a specific scenario? So, looking at the sample sheets, Lexi Smoke would only gain the +1 to those skills when they were used in connection with a situation revolving around military command? Also for Familiarity, 4 of the sample sheets have a +1 when dealing with a specific group of people, while the fifth has +1 to three skills. Is this an either/or type scenario?

Feel free to come back and say all will be explained when you post the rest of the stuff btw, this is just the result of my brain trying to reverse engineer the sample sheets to the character information to work out what's going on.

1. Yes.

2. Foci are pretty free-form, so rather than make a hard and fast list (although at some point I might pay someone to make a list of examples). you can just use your best judgement and I'll offer corrections if necessary.

3. You're correct that a basic Advantage applies +1 die to rolls of three specific skills in specific situations, as in Smoke's example. I wrote those characters for a convention so to streamline the new player experience and save myself some time in the writing I subbed in +1 for specific groups.

Are we alive? Be good to see character concepts, and questions prompt me to write new lore.

I was waiting for more lore to try and not contradict anything with my ideas, but I'll fling my idea out.

I'm thinking ex-corp, specialist researcher into manatech but progressively unable to overlook the human consequences of their research, so they turn saboteur, destroying the facility they work in and using the opportunity to be recorded as dead, drifting their way through various resistance groups, gaining more 'rough tech' skills until they make their way to LSS, where they feel there are sufficient resources available to be able to make a difference.

Wasn't too sure on the overall tech level generally, but I envisioned them as someone who utilised 'primitive' infrastructure like manual circuitbreakers, wired LAN networking separate from wireless grids etc. to try and minimise the potential for remote surveillance and sabotage of systems. Methodical and meticulous, a penchant for over-preparation that some might consider paranoia if they weren't so damn calm about all of it. That being said, they have a tendency to panic when all their contingencies are expended and they no longer have a plan on their hands because that degree of control is their coping mechanism of sorts. Outside of mission, not one for small talk - the sort of person who can just sit next to friends drinking at a bar and be content with just that, but has a tendency to speak up they deem it important/useful. A tinkerer with bootlegged scraps of tech and other useful bits and pieces, the kind who'd rather open stuff up and purpose build what they need rather than go out and acquire it. Definitely keen to get their hands on any usable manatech they can to repurpose it to useful ends.

Toying with the idea of them having a family from their corp life that also thinks they're dead which could provide some extra flavour/ammunition to be used against them once things go south and they potentially get exposed, as well as any other consequences of their past that could be thrown their way. If facial modification is available on the down low probably had some of that cheap if they could get it.

Sorry it's a bit rambling, will try to format for coherency at a later date.

We have one character - everyone stll up an' at 'em?

Sorry, work and family have been absolutely bonkers so I haven't had mental space to deal with the crunch. I'm decent at writing characters but not so much fiddling with builds.

I know how that is! Don't stress about the build; focus on the character and I can handle the numbers for you.

Thanks, and sorry for the radio silence. My tagline for my character would be, "The face of an angel, and a heart of blackest pitch." A child of the Blacklines, Skye grew up poor as dirt and twice as downtrodden. She was surrounded not just by poverty, but substance abuse, violence, and worse. She'd seen the worst of human misery before she learned to read. And she only learned to read because she got recruited into a corporate PMC as a child soldier; for recruited into, read "bought by". She was, surprisingly enough, good base material for their techniques - and if she washed out of training, she'd make useful reagents. Either way, it would be a reasonable investment. She was taught infiltration both via social engineering and via physical penetration, and she's very, very good at both. Not a frontline combatant: she thinks people who stand where other people are shooting are the worst kinds of idiots. If you're not cheating, you're not trying - and soon you're not going to be breathing either. She's sneaky-smart, and vicious, and has no apparent qualms.

So why is Skye working for LSS? Two words: Lexi Smoke. She couldn't give two hoots about what Fortune is trying to accomplish. People are corrupt and it will never get better as long as people are people. But Lexi? Lexi's different. Lexi gave enough of a damn to pull her out of the gutter. If she has any inkling of empathy or mercy, it's only through Lexi. Might be enough, might not. It's a start.

That work?

Yep., that's good stuff and I can hammer out some numbers for you as we get closer to starting.
