Introduction!

Hey guys! I'm sure a lot of you have seen this title floating around. Mission: Z has been an RP in the works for several weeks now, and was initially a very popular idea with tons of players signed up. But an oversight on my part that caused me to be inactive for about a week very early into the RP (which made a lot of people lose interest), and the loss of my co-GM especially, has made it difficult, if not impossible, to continue with the storyline we initially thought out. So we have decided to reboot the RP entirely, with a revised story, in the hopes that it will garner some fresh interest. Now, the new plot isn't set in concrete yet, my two new co-GMs (@Dakota K5 and @VengefulPeanut) and myself still have some things to flesh out, but I wanted to get a head start on getting the word out there and getting character sheets and stuff up. So without any further fluff, here is the info. Some of it is bound to change (and I do always take critique/ideas into account) but some of it will stay. This is basically just the remnants of the initial idea, slightly edited to fit the basics of the new story.

The premise!

    • January, 2024
A scientist in California, working on a vaccine for Toxoplasmosis, which is the disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, begins human trials.
    • March, 2025
The vaccine is deemed a success, and the process of approval for distribution begins.
    • April, 2025
The lead scientist of the T. gondii vaccine dies of a heart attack.
    • April, 2025
A new lead scientist is assigned to the project. Makes minor edits to the quantity of some substances found in the vaccine, but the changes are minute, and a repeat of human trials is deemed unnecessary.
    • June, 2025
The vaccine is approved for worldwide distribution... and the apocalypse begins.
    • September, 2025
50% of the human population is either infected, or dead. The rest are in hiding, trying to survive.
    • January, 2026
A scientist by the name of Aaron Fletcher, who was one of the assistants during the trials, begins work on a possible cure.
    • March, 2026
Dr. Fletcher, after months of trying, has given up on a cure. It seems impossible. He switches gears, opting to try to create an immunity vaccine instead.
    • May 2026 (our legacy begins here!)
The immunity vaccine is ready for human trials.

The disease!

[spoili]
Unlike most zombie plots, the Z. gondii zombies are not the result of a virus, but, rather, a brain-attacking parasite. It is estimated that 30% - 50% of the human population are already carriers of T. gondii, which is spread largely in part by cats, pigs, sheep, and other livestock. Post-vaccination, anyone who did not carry the parasite was unaffected. However, those who did harbor T. gondii within their system, and were exposed to the vaccine, are a part of "Group X" - the original "zombies".

Contrary to popular belief, the Z. gondii zombies are not undead, and the dead can not be resurrected by the parasite. Once the human body dies, it is dead. While the corpse (if infected while alive) can still be a carrier for disease for up to 72 hours after death, there is no risk of anyone who dies being "reborn" as a zombie. The parasite, that lives in the brain, relies on the human body to keep it alive. If the body dies, the parasite dies as well.

[/spoili]

How is it spread?

[spoili]
Toxoplasma gondii AKA T. gondii (the original parasite) is spread via under cooked contaminated meat, unwashed contaminated fruits & vegetables, and contaminated water, soil, and cat litter coming into contact with the eyes, nose or mouth.

Zaraplasma gondii AKA Z. gondii (the mutated parasite) is spread from mammal to mammal via bodily fluids, including blood, saliva, ejaculatory excretions, and excrement of both solid and liquid varieties.

[/spoili]

Symptoms & Timeframe!

[spoili]
Hours After Infection || Symptoms
24 || Mild, flu-like symptoms
36 || Sore throat, swollen lymph nodes
48 || Crippling migraines, memory loss
60 || Loss of pain receptors, fits of rage
72 || Complete loss of bodily & cognitive functions, increased healing
72+ || All memory gone, reverted to primal instincts

[/spoili]

In depth symptoms!

[spoili]
24 hours after the infection, the host will experience mild, cold or flu-like symptoms, including headaches, stuffy/runny nose, congestion, sore throat and cough. If the infection was obtained by a bite, the site may grow red, irritated, and inflamed.

36 hours after the infection, in addition to the symptoms above growing worse, swollen lymph nodes will develop, along with a sore throat that progressively worsens and may inhibit breathing via compression of the trachea caused by the swelling.

48 hours after the infection, you will begin to experience memory loss, both short and long term, and blinding, crippling migraines.

60 hours after the infection, the host will lose all pain receptors in the body. Both a blessing and a curse, as the fits of blind rage that follow often involve the host being injured in some way or another.

72 hours after the infection, the host has lost all memory and the parasite is in complete control.

After the 72 hour timeframe, the human host is now only that, a host. All cognitive function has ceased, and, essentially, the "person" inside the body is gone. There are no memories, no thoughts, only primal instincts and rage, the urge to kill, and to eat, any living thing that crosses its path (though the parasites seem to somehow recognize other host-bodies, and leave them be). Any mammal can be infected with Z. gondii, although only those with physical attributes and digestive tracts suited for hunting and eating meat typically survive the infection, as any inclination to eat other organic material disappears once infected. As a result, natural carnivores are often hosts of Z. gondii. Birds, fish, invertebrates, reptiles, bugs, and amphibians seem to be unaffected by Z. gondii, and zombies do not actively hunt these creatures.

Plot!

Basically the idea is this: I will be playing Dr. Fletcher's son. Before the doctor can get in contact with anyone in Washington (there are rumors that a cure is in the works there too) Dr. Fletcher ends up meeting his demise. Before that, however, he manages to inject the immunity into the closest living thing he can find, his late wife's service dog, Hero, instructing his son to get Hero to Washington and end the Z. gondii parasite once and for all.

Where you guys come in!

Dr. Fletcher's son is going to need all the help he can get to make it to DC with Hero. Along the way the pair will meet survivors with like minds, and form a group that travels together though they may not know the purpose right off the bat. At some point, the group will find themselves in a pickle that looks very dire. At the last moment, they are rescued by another group of survivors, and escorted to their home, a walled-off community that seems incredibly safe and appealing... but there is a darkness there that is not at first seen... how will our survivors react when the people who once helped them seem to now want to do exactly the opposite?

Comments!

Everyone is going to need to play at least two characters, one main and one side, BUT you can play as many as you can reasonably keep up with. Main characters will be a part of the group that's traveling with the Fletcher child and Hero. They can meet up with them at any point in the storyline leading up to the "rescue" unless you want your MAIN character to be a part of the rescue group that decides they want to stay with them.

Side characters will be a part of the "rescue group" or the community that they belong to. (Think Woodberry from The Walking Dead, not everyone knows their leadership is evil, and once they do may revolt and decide to stay with the main group.) This is completely acceptable, though in this case I'll ask your side character be a part of the traveling group, and can be killed off for plot advancement before your main character enters the scene.

This will be a mature rated roleplay, not for sex or romance purposes (though that's fine between consenting adult characters, idc) but because it's going to be incredibly gory, violent, and dark, along with probably quite a bit of foul language. No one-liner (or preferably even one paragraph) posts, we are looking for rather literate players. :)

The Character Submission and IC threads are up now and can be reached via the buttons at the top of this post. Feel free to submit your character forms and as soon as a GM approves it, you are free to RP!

There it was again.

Dexter Bastian Fletcher put two fingers between the window blinds and pulled them apart just far enough to peer outside. The same car had traveled the length of the road in front of their house twice in the last hour, and while this wouldn't be too terribly uncommon under normal circumstances, the world had ended five months ago. The headlights disappeared again and Dex let the blinds fall back together, turning around with his dark brows furrowed in worry. They lived in a rural, sparsely populated town, at the end of a long, winding county road, and since the Z. gondii parasite had "taken over the world", they very rarely saw cars. So seeing the same big, dark colored pickup truck several times in one hour, much less one day, was unsettling.

His dog, Hero, sat at his heels. Sensing Dex's worry, the little pit bull grumbled good naturedly and pressed his blocky head against his master's knee, eliciting a scratch behind the ears and a long, low sigh. "Gotta keep our guard up pal." He whispered, reaching up to itch at the few days worth of stubble that graced his cheeks. Dexter crossed the large, well furnished room and hit the light switch to darken the windows.

"Hey!" The whine came from across the room, to the couch where his sixteen year old sister, Riley, had been reading a book. "I'm trying to read here." She scowled.

"Use a book light." Her brother replied quietly. "There's a suspicious truck that's been driving around and I don't want to draw attention to the house."

"Yes sir." She mock saluted him with the wrong hand and stormed off in the general direction of her bedroom, using the weak moonlight that shone through the sliding glass doors in the kitchen as a guide. Dexter shook his head. Had anyone else called him "sir" they would have been corrected. He was a Sergeant, and used to being addressed as such. But Riley got away with a lot of things that others could not. Hero looked after his young mistress and then back to Dexter, waiting, and Dexter mock-scowled down at him. "Oh go on you traitor. Geh." Dismissed, the dog trotted after Riley.

They had been reasonably safe here since the z-pocalypse, as Riley had christened it. Their father, Aaron, was a freak about being prepared for emergencies, and as a result, the Fletcher home had an entire basement room stocked with dehydrated, canned, and jarred goods. Naturally they were all store bought or ordered online, as Aaron wouldn't dare do something as mundane as growing vegetables, but they were there nonetheless, ready for a nuclear fallout, or a super storm, or any other natural disaster... but they worked just as well for most of the world being infected by a brain-controlling parasite, too...

Now alone, Dexter sank down on to the couch Riley had vacated, resting his face on the knuckles of his bent right arm. He knew Riley wasn't really angry with him. She was angry at the world, yes, at their father, definitely, but the two siblings, despite being seven years apart in age, and damn near polar opposites, rarely fought. She was used to Dexter's hyper-sensitive instincts picking up on things that could pose a threat, which is why she hadn't put up a fight about the light switch. He sat there in darkness, listening for the crunch of gravel that would signal someone pulling into their driveway, but after over an hour of silence, the tension in his frame lessened, and not long after, he was asleep.

...

He awoke the next morning to the sound of a door slamming. Hero, who had been curled next to him, shot straight up out of his sleep with a startled bark. Blinking at the sunlight streaming in from the window opposite the couch, Dexter looked around. His father was standing in the kitchen, a hand over his face, muttering angrily. "What's going on?"

"That sister of yours is so damned stubborn!" Dr. Fletcher growled. "I'm fed up with the attitude about every little thing. She acts like it's MY fault the apocalypse happened."

That's not what she's mad at you about, dad. Dexter thought, but he didn't say anything. He was used to his father and sister fighting by now, and it never did any good to get in the middle of it. His father gave a helpless shrug and then shuffled down the basement staircase, mumbling something that sounded like "So close. So close."

He was curious about what they were fighting about this time and resolved to ask Riley when she returned. Their large back yard was surrounded by an 8ft privacy fence, and Riley often went out to the tree swing when she needed to blow off some steam. But when she didn't return for over an hour, he got worried. She was usually back by now, at least to check in, grab a bottle of water. So he went out to look for her with Hero bounding around him in large, joyous circles.

When he got to the swing, it was empty, swaying slightly in the wind and looking as if it hadn't even been touched in several days. Dread filled him, and he closed his eyes. "Hero. Such, Riley." Instantly the dog was on the job, leading him first to the unlocked back gate, and then to the wooded area behind their home. Riley had never done anything like this before. Not without him. It was dangerous out there. What was she thinking? Torn now between worry and anger, Dexter followed Hero, watching the dog lose her scent and then pick it up again twice. With every step further away from the house, the dread intensified, solidifying like a solid block of ice in his gut. And when Hero finally stopped, it was not because he found Riley.

They had come out all the way on the other side of the wooded area, where it butted against a county road. An Infected lay dead half on, half off of the asphalt, with a high caliber gunshot wound to the head. Dexter knelt beside it, sleeve covering his mouth. He was pretty sure it took bodily fluids to transfer the parasite, but he wasn't going to take the chance. The Infected was recently dead, and there were signs of a struggle. Blood in the grass. Blood pooled on the asphalt. Too much blood for a person to have survived. There were also signs of Riley. One of her shoes lay abandoned, at the base of a tree. And when he stepped over to it, he also saw a gun. His gun. Laying discarded in the grass with blood streaked across the muzzle. Dexter picked it up.
Night had fallen by the time Dexter returned home, weary and exhausted. Their father was waiting at the door when Dexter slid it open and stepped inside, meeting the man's gaze with a defeated expression. Dr. Fletcher turned away and disappeared back into the basement. He now knew that Riley was gone. And that it was his fault.

...

Dexter buried his father three days later. When he'd cut him down, a crumpled note fell from his cold, clenched fist. Forgive me, son. It read in shaky lettering. I am too weak for this world. But you are strong. You can save us. I've finished the immunity, and I've given it to Hero. Get him to Washington DC, and they can continue my work.

I am so very, very sorry. I love you, Dexter.

Dad

Hi! I was wondering if it would be OK to join in? Not part of the original group obviously but this sounds like a great RP.

This really does sound fantastic. I'm big on Zombie lore and how the zombies in this work is absolutely phenomenal! Even if I can't participate (which I'd like to if there's still room) would at least like to read what happens to everyone! Such a great story concept! It'll be interesting to see what characters everyone comes up with!

Unless you'd prefer Robbi or Kelly, I figured Tyrese would be my main character :)

It is totally up to you! The main character(s) are the ones that will be traveling with Dexter, Evie and Otto after the Impact Point plot.

Tagging everyone who expressed interest in the first RP.

@Valor @~\The Talentless/~ @VerbalAbuse @Mysty @neptune @TragicTrees @Brea @The Crimson Crow @Secrets&Mysteries @Lackadaisical @Abstract @Derp @Furasian @Petricus Euryale @TheTechnoVampire @MaryGold

If you'd like me to untag you, please rate THIS comment with a "go home, you're drunk" and I'll make sure not to tag you in anything further. :)

I hadn't realized I'd been tagged. So, I'll reupload my characters. But this time, I'll have my brother and sister duo separated if that would work better.

No it's quite alright, they can stay together if that's how you want it! :) I would still ask you to make a minor Impact Point character as well though.

Alrighty, I think I'm done with characters at the moment. May make some others later on. Anyone got a preference to who gets introduced first or how they're introduced?

Also everyone. I'd like it if no one else started with the group. I like to RP interaction, so if you want to make your characters wander into the sciport that's fine, or if your rather wait until we time skip to next morning and get out of there, thats also fine!
