Hi, I'm Vexus, and I heckin' love Pokémon.

  • It has been ten years since Kyogre and Groudon were awoken and wrought havoc on Sootopolis City. Since then Champion May stepped down to become a Gym Leader and the Draconid Lorekeeper Zinnia rose to the position of Champion. Meanwhile, various criminal and terrorist groups followed Teams Aqua and Magma in becoming the scourge of their respective regions... until various vigilantes rose up and drove them away anyway.

In the present day, the Pokémon League is keeping a stern eye on beginning trainers. After attacks on the Unova League, Pokémon exploitation in Kanto and Johto, an attempt to wipe out life on the planet in Kalos and threats to reality itself in Sinnoh and Alola, attempts have been made to prevent the uprising of another criminal team. The kicker? It's also a lot more difficult to actually start as a trainer thanks to the new regulations and enforcement. Good luck adapting to it!

Hoenn Rising is a pretty freeform one, set a decade after the events of the Hoenn games. Which Hoenn games specifically? Well, it's kind of a mishmash of all of them. Events play out as they did roughly as they did in Emerald (both Team Magma and Team Aqua actively pursue their goals, they resurrect Groudon and Kyogre respectively, the hero comes along with Rayquaza and foils them), but with aspects from ORAS (Mega Evolution and Primal Reversion exist, the Fairy type exists, all the 'mons from Generations 1 to 7 exist, events from the other games happened).

  • The rules are pretty simple.

Don't godmod. Your characters are yours, my character is mine, and I'm sure we'd obviously be happy if those boundaries were respected. You can have moments of awesome, but anything that's blatantly cheating will be looked down upon. Sorry Brenda, but your Wurmple ain't gonna beat Roxanne!

Please use original characters. While this roleplay will be quite sandboxy in places (literally given how Hoenn's got loads of beaches and a desert, hardy har har), I do have an overarching plot, and it involves a mix of canon characters and a few originals.

One character at a time. I might relax this later on if we have a small, spread out cast though. I suspect it might be a bit dull if there are three people, one's in Dewford, one's in Mossdeep and the other's in Lavaridge!

Be good to each other. We're all supposedly mature people, and I'd hate for ugly disputes to happen. Of course if they are, as GM I'd settle them.

Posting expectations: Intermediate or better, weekly posts though I'm perfectly willing to be flexible on that one.

    Anyway, here's The Sign-Up Sheet:

    Name:
Age: Between 12 and 19 please.
Gender: <insert Professor Oak joke here>
Trainer Class: Youngster, Bird Keeper, Super Nerd etc.
    Appearance: Two short paragraph minimum
    Personality: One short paragraph minimum
Starting town: See the towns list tab
    Backstory: Three short paragraph minimum

Pokémon: You may start with up to three of them. Please try to be reasonable about what you start with.

Nickname: Nicknames are optional, but a good way of differentiating between individual Pokémon of the same species.
    Species:
    Gender: If applicable
    Form: If applicable
    Ability:
    Personality: One short paragraph
    Backstory: One short paragraph

Certain Pokémon will not be available at the start of the roleplay. My plan is for our characters to start off on a fairly even playing field. Similarly, you are allowed to start with rare Pokémon, but that should be in exchange for a good sign-up.

    std = standard form
These are Pokémon that are easily found and obtained in the Hoenn region. While their relative commonality is going to vary depending on the exact location, it doesn't take too much difficulty to track one down and add it to your party. Just don't expect to find Tentacool in Mt. Chimney, for example!

Zubat, Sandshrew (std), Oddish, Psyduck, Machop, Tentacool, Geodude (std), Magnemite, Doduo, Grimer (std), Voltorb, Koffing, Horsea, Goldeen, Magikarp, Chinchou, Natu, Azurill, Slugma, Corsola, Phanpy, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Poochyena, Zigzagoon, Wurmple, Lotad, Seedot, Taillow, Wingull, Surskit, Shroomish, Nincada, Whismur, Electrike, Plusle, Minun, Volbeat, Illumise, Budew, Gulpin, Carvanha, Numel, Spoink, Spinda, Barboach, Corphish, Luvdisc
These are Pokémon that are trickier to find in Hoenn, but not quite worthy of the title of "rare". Again, exactly how rare they are is relative to your actual location.

Pidgey, Vulpix (std), Igglybuff, Paras, Venonat, Abra, Rhyhorn, Staryu, Hoothoot, Ledyba, Spinarak, Mareep, Hoppip, Aipom, Yanma, Wooper, Pineco, Gligar, Slakoth, Makuhita, Skitty, Aron, Meditite, Wailmer, Torkoal, Trapinch, Swablu, Baltoy, Kecleon, Shuppet, Duskull, Chingling, Snorunt, Spheal, Clamperl, Relicanth, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Starly, Shellos, Finneon, Pidove, Trubbish, Ducklett, Rufflet, Vullaby, Fletchling, Scatterbug, Binacle, Skrelp, Clauncher, Phantump, Pikipek, Cutiefly
Self-explanatory. These are Pokémon that you generally won't find in Hoenn, and certainly never in great numbers. If you were in another region, they could easily be uncommon or even common! Obviously this varies by region too - Alolan forms won't be common outside Alola, for instance.

Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Caterpie, Weedle, Rattata (std), Rattata (Alolan), Spearow, Ekans, Nidoran, Diglett, Diglett (Alolan), Meowth (std), Meowth (Alolan), Mankey, Growlithe, Poliwag, Bellsprout, Geodude (Alolan), Ponyta, Slowpoke, Drowzee, Krabby, Exeggcute, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Sentret, Sunkern, Murkrow, Teddiursa, Swinub, Remoraid, Mantyke, Houndour, Stantler, Bidoof, Kricketot, Shinx, Burmy, Combee, Pachirisu, Buizel, Cherubi, Buneary, Glameow, Stunky, Bronzor, Hippopotas, Skorupi, Croagunk, Carnivine, Snover, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, Patrat, Lillipup, Purrloin, Munna, Blitzle, Roggenrola, Woobat, Drilbur, Timburr, Tympole, Sewaddle, Venipede, Cottonee, Petilil, Dwebble, Sandile, Minccino, Gothita, Solosis, Deerling, Emolga, Karrablast, Foongus, Joltik, Ferroseed, Klink, Shelmet, Stunfisk, Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie, Bunnelby, Skiddo, Pancham, Furfrou, Rowlet, Litten, Popplio, Yungoos, Grubbin, Crabrawler, Oricorio, Rockruff, Mudbray, Salandit, Pyukumuku
Again, self-explanatory. These aren't easily found, even in the regions they're native to, which might or might not be Hoenn depending on the Pokémon. If you have one of these at the start, these will take the best justification.

Pichu, Sandshrew (Alolan), Cleffa, Vulpix (Alolan), Farfetch'd, Seel, Grimer (Alolan), Gastly, Onix, Cubone, Tyrogue, Lickitung, Happiny, Tangela, Mime Jr., Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Lapras, Ditto, Eevee, Porygon, Omanyte, Kabuto, Munchlax, Togepi, Bonsly, Misdreavus, Unown, Wynaut, Girafarig, Snubbull, Qwilfish, Shuckle, Sneasel, Delibird, Smeargle, Ralts, Sableye, Mawile, Nosepass, Lileep, Anorith, Feebas, Castform, Cranidos, Shieldon, Drifloon, Chatot, Riolu, Pansage, Pansear, Panpour, Audino, Throh, Sawk, Basculin, Darumaka, Maractus, Scraggy, Sigilyph, Yamask, Tirtouga, Archen, Zorua, Vanillite, Frillish, Alomomola, Tynamo, Elgyem, Litwick, Axew, Cubchoo, Mienfoo, Golett, Pawniard, Litleo, Flabébé, Espurr, Honedge, Spritzee, Swirlix, Inkay, Helioptile, Tyrunt, Amaura, Dedenne, Pumpkaboo, Bergmite, Noibat, Mareanie, Dewpider, Fomantis, Morelull, Stufful, Bounsweet, Comfey, Oranguru, Passimian, Wimpod, Sandygast, Togedemaru
These Pokémon are so strong (or potentially strong) that I will say no to you having them right at the beginning of the roleplay. Many of them will become available later on though - like heck I'd stop you from evolving your Pokémon!

Any evolved Pokémon, any legendary/mythical Pokémon, any Ultra Beast, Kangaskhan, Scyther, Pinsir, Tauros, Aerodactyl, Dratini, Heracross, Skarmory, Miltank, Larvitar, Zangoose, Seviper, Lunatone, Solrock, Tropius, Absol, Bagon, Beldum, Spiritomb, Gible, Rotom, Druddigon, Bouffalant, Heatmor, Durant, Deino, Larvesta, Hawlucha, Carbink, Goomy, Klefki, Wishiwashi, Type: Null, Minior, Komala, Turtonator, Mimikyu, Bruxish, Drampa, Dhelmise, Jangmo-o

  • Hoenn has seventeen main settlements, and most of them are available for players to start their journey in, though they can be from one of the other towns originally too. It's also perfectly fine for your character to be from another region, but their options for starting points are limited to Lilycove and Slateport.
A town that can't be shaded any hue.
Available as a starting town: Yes

The one major settlement that lacks a gym aside from Ever Grande City. The biggest claim to fame of this small, rural place is the Birch Pokémon Lab. This laboratory is the base from which the father-and-son team of Dalton and Brendan Birch study Pokémon habitats.
    Where things start off scarce.
Available as a starting town: Yes

A small trading town with a newly opened Pokémon Gym. It's perhaps best known for its regular farmers' markets. This is a great spot to pick up berries and other fresh produce. The Gym Leader Innes runs the Hoenn Rangers Union from her Gym.
    GYM LEADER: Innes
    Queen of the Rangers
    Where people mingle with nature.
Available as a starting town: Yes

A city that recently underwent rejuvenation, with the recently completed Petalburg Bay resort area giving this once-declining riverside town a boost in tourism. It's also a hot-spot for some of the stronger trainers in Hoenn - new Gym Leader May (an ex-Champion) only takes on challengers who have already earned at least four other badges in Hoenn.

    GYM LEADER: May
A woman in pursuit of power
The city probing the integration of nature and science.
Available as a starting town: Yes

Since the completion of Rusturf Tunnel to the east, this city was able to drum up a much improved amount of business with trainers passing between Petalburg and Mauville. The Devon Corporation benefitted in particular, and invested in improving the city into a technological wonderland, while also improving the underdeveloped Route 115 to Meteor Falls, improving the route north to Fallarbor Town and increasing traffic further. Rustboro City Gym and the prestigious Trainers School were also incorporated into the Rustboro Institute of Technology and Science recently, with the former becoming the hub of the Institute's paleontology and geology departments.

    GYM LEADER: Roxanne
    The Rock-loving honours student!
A tiny island in the blue sea.
Available as a starting town: Yes

Calling Dewford a "town" is something of an embellishment, being not much more than a small fishing village. It's a quiet, close-knit and fairly self-sufficient community which doesn't see much through-traffic. Most visitors come either to battle local Gym Leader Brawly, or to explore the nearby Granite Cave, a popular rock collecting spot.

    GYM LEADER: Brawly
    A big wave in fighting!
The port where people and Pokémon cross paths with nature.
Available as a starting town: Yes

One of the two main port towns in Hoenn along with Lilycove, Slateport has a strong maritime heritage. Many ships and other sea vessels have been constructed at the shipyard, including the famous SS Tidal. Regular ferry services run from here to Lilycove City, Petalburg City (via Dewford Town) and the Battle Frontier. Transregional and international ships also dock here, many of them selling goods at the famous Slateport Market. There is also the well-regarded Oceanic Museum and massive beach on the edge of town, the latter of which is kept clean by a group of volunteers overseen by Gym Leader Pierson. There is also a Contest Hall, the second-largest of the four in Hoenn.

    GYM LEADER: Pierson
    Filth-buster extraordinaire!
The bright and shiny city of fun!
Available as a starting town: Yes

The late Gym Leader and Mayor of Mauville City, Wattson, redeveloped the city after the failure of the New Mauville project. As its slogan suggests, Mauville is an enterainment hub with plenty of bars, cafés, theatres, venues and other spots, all dedicated to entertainment. It's a very central city, with direct connections to seven other towns and cities, sometimes called "The Crossroads of Hoenn". After Wattson passed away, his former pupil Kirk took over as Gym Leader, while continuing to perform as the lead guitarist of his personal heavy metal band. As such, the gym undergoes long spells when it's closed from time to time.

    GYM LEADER: Kirk
    You'll be thunderstruck!
The windswept highlands with the sweet fragrance of grass.
Available as a starting town: Yes

An area of natural beauty, Verdanturf Town was once a quiet town off the beaten track until the completion of Rusturf Tunnel. Even now a lot of trainers merely pass through it on the way to either Rustboro or Mauville, apart from those who might be trying to get onto the Contest scene at the Contest Hall. Sometimes trainers make the trek west after being disappointed to find Mauville Gym closed, preferring the relatively short distance to Verdanturf compared to one of the other nearby cities - especially if they don't own a bicycle. Those that do find the unique, Alola-inspired Gym to be quite a unique and thrilling experience.

    GYM LEADER: Thecla
The modern-day hippie in touch with the earth.
A farm community with small gardens.
Available as a starting town: Yes

Fallarbor Town is one of the largest towns in Hoenn in terms of area, though you might not believe that if you had ever been there. That's because the vast majority of it is farmland centred around routes 113 and 114 and a trading centre which is home to the Pokémon Centre, Mart and Contest Hall. While the ground might not look like much, regularly being tuned grey-brown by volcanic ash spewing from the nearby Mt. Chimney, it's actually said ash that gives the soil its strong fertility. Improved trading routes to the south have brought in new prosperity to the farmers. The town is also home to Professor Takao Cozmo, a leading meteoricist.

    GYM LEADER: Irene
    Steven Stone's #1 Fan!
    An excellent place for relaxing!
Available as a starting town: Yes

Lavaridge Town is best known for its hot springs, which are said to be able to cure any ailment. Due to this and its close proximity to Mt. Chimney, it's a very popular tourist destination. As such, many hotels and tourist traps have come up in the last few years. The other reason people come to Lavaridge Town is, of course, the Gym.

    GYM LEADER: Flannery
One with a fiery passion that burns!
The treetop city that frolics with nature.
Available as a starting town: Yes

Fortree City is a pretty unique city. All the buildings are wood cabins, most of which are also built on large wooden platforms up in the trees. Particularly large structures such as the Pokémon Centre and the Gym are built on the surface. It's not unheard of for wild Pokémon to be seen within the city. Usually they're docile and used to human interaction, though there have been the occasional report of hostile or otherwise disruptive Pokémon - most notably a Kecleon which rendered itself invisible and blocked access to the Gym roughly a decade ago.

    GYM LEADER: Winona
The bird user taking flight to the world
Where the land ends and the sea begins.
Available as a starting town: Yes

The number one beach resort in Hoenn, Lilycove City offers a very wide range of attractions. These include the largest Contest Hall in Hoenn, which is also the site of the Hoenn Grand Festival, one of the most prestigious Pokémon Contests in the world. There is also the Lilycove Museum, with a wide array of exquisite artwork. Lilycove Department Store is the largest shopping centre in the whole of Hoenn. Finally, the former Team Aqua Hideout in Lilycove Hollow has been partially redeveloped into a Gym. There are several hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and other tourist accomodations in Lilycove, the most famous of which is the Cave Lily Hotel. Ferry services to Slateport, Ever Grande and Mossdeep run regularly, and while ferries to other regions and countries aren't as regular as they are in Slateport, there are plenty.

    GYM LEADER: Maxie
The man who could raise continents
    Our slogan: Cherish Pokémon!
Available as a starting town: Yes

A large island which is almost entirely one sprawling city and a secondary technological hub after Rustboro. The most notable thing about Mossdeep City is that it's home to the main headquarters of the International Space Program, as well as their main launch site. Former champion and billionaire playboy Steven Stone also has a home in Mossdeep. To the north is Shoal Cave, one of the coldest locations in an otherwise warm region.

    GYM LEADERS: Tate and Liza
    The mystic combination!
The mystical city where history slumbers.
Available as a starting town: No

Sootopolis is a difficult city to enter due to the walls of the massive crater it's located inside. There isn't an entirely established consensus on why the crater was formed, though most agree it was either a meteor impact or an extinct volcano. Either way, it's usually entered from either by flying above the top of the crater, or by diving through some narrow passageways on the surrounding Route 126. Sootopolis is an important location within the mythology and history of Hoenn. As well as being the site of a battle between two legendary Pokémon a decade ago, it's the home of the Cave of Origin, a location depicted in legend as the place where life begins. It's also home to one of the most prestigious gyms in Hoenn. If a challenger comes with seven or more Hoenn badges, they have to face the former champion Wallace. With fewer, they face Wallace's mentor Juan.

    GYM LEADERS: Wallace and Juan
The leaders with the beauty of pure water
Where the morning sun smiles upon the waters.
Available as a starting town: No

Pacifidlog is unique in that it's built upon floating logs and rafts on top of a colony of Corsola. As it lacks any ferry connections, the people of Pacifidlog have had to be entirely self-sufficient. It is rumoured that the ancestors of Pacifidlog lived in boats and were searching for something, and with Sky Pillar nearby and legends of a hidden underwater chamber connected to ancient ruins scattered across the region, it's entirely possible. Certainly, it's piqued the interest of fantasy author Hans K. Grimm, who recently moved there and became a Gym Leader.

    GYM LEADER: Hans
    The master of high fantasy
The paradise of flowers, the sea, and Pokémon.
Available as a starting town: Yes

Although this island city has a rather small permanent population, it is considered -the- most important city in the Hoenn region for any Pokémon Trainer. It's the home of the Hoenn Pokémon League, the administrative centre of Hoenn and the home of the Hoenn League Tournament. This annual battle tournament decides the strongest Pokémon trainer in Hoenn outside of the Gym Leaders and Elite Four. The winner then gets to face the Elite Four and potentially the Champion in order to become Champion themselves.
The front lines of Pokémon battling!
Available as a starting town: No

This area is located in the southern seas of Hoenn isn't technically considered a town or city, but does have a large permanent population who help to run the facilities. What facilities are these? The battle facilities, of course! The Battle Frontier is an island resort dedicated to Pokémon battling and training. Admittance is by invitation only, and only those who are able to impress the resort's owner, an enigmatic man named Scott, are granted access. There are seven facilities, intended to test trainers' spirit, knowledge, bravery, tactics, guts, luck and general abilities.

Name: Lita Austin
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Trainer Class: Battle Girl
Appearance: Like most Battle Girls, Lita is rather tall (1.7m) and has a very well-toned and athletic build. She has long, indigo hair which she usually keeps tied in a loose ponytail. She has a heart-shaped face and deep blue eyes, with somewhat prominent cheekbones. She hasn't been travelling long, and due to her training mostly taking place in the dark Dewford Town Gym and Granite Cave, she has rather pale skin.

She primarily wears athletic clothing, though what form that takes depends on the local climate she's in. Since Hoenn's a rather warm clime, she's usually seen wearing shorts and a crop top with training shoes, with some leggings for a bit of added protection when venturing off-road.

Personality: Lita is pretty keen to explore the Pokémon world, particularly after witnessing the power of three legendary Pokémon at a young age. She's a little bit jaded from her lack of success with her starter Meditite, and the fact she doesn't view Aron as entirely "her" own capture, but still looks after them. She views them as her responsibility and as travelling partners, even if her Aron is more of a natural fighter compared to her Meditite. She has a bit of a competitive streak and aims to be the best in everything she applies herself to, though she tries to avoid letting that streak dominate her life.

Starting town: Slateport City

Backstory: Lita was born in Dewford Town. Her mother Trish was a fisherwoman and her father Dwayne was a former Pokémon trainer and explorer. Lita had a fairly quiet childhood. When she was six years old, freak weather patterns were detected centred over Sootopolis, and the media went to report. What she saw being reported blew her mind - not only were legendary Pokémon real, but their power was easily on par with what was spoken of in myth. From that point on, she wanted to become strong enough to one day seek out a legendary Pokémon of her own.

When she was eleven, Lita and Dwayne went to Dewford Gym to enroll her as a Gym trainer. Lita didn't have a Pokémon of her own at the time and so borrowed her father's Machop to battle Brawly. The match ended with a win for Brawly and his Makuhita, but it was tightly fought enough that he accepted Lita as a gym apprentice. He also gifted her with a Starter Pokémon he described as "difficult, but worthwhile" - a Meditite. The two began training not just in Pokémon battling, but also in mixed martial arts.

Meditite proved to be as difficult as Brawly had suggested. Being unable to use any moves other than Bide, training her was something of a struggle, even though it had the type advantage against other Gym apprentices. Still, it didn't take long for the other apprentices to work out ways around Meditite's one attack, putting Lita at the bottom of the pecking order when it came to Pokémon battling. She was still a pretty powerful fighter in her own right, however. It didn't help her much with her Pokémon training, but it kept her in physical shape and gave her some form of self-validation when she was struggling.

Brawly couldn't help noticing how much Lita was struggling. He offered a few suggestions for how to improve such as giving her a new Pokémon or trading Meditite for another Pokémon. Despite her frustrations with training Meditite, she instead decided it would be more worthwhile to stick with it, but considered raising some other Pokémon too, and possibly leaving the Gym for a while to do so, rather than continue to face the mockery of her peers. Brawly argued against the decision, but respected it enough to take her on a trip to Granite Cave to help to capture a second Pokémon for her. With some assistance from his Makuhita, Lita captured an Aron. She left Dewford Town the very next day with her two Pokémon, some clean clothes and a wad of cash.

Pokémon:

Nickname: N/A
Species: Meditite
Gender: Female
Form: N/A
Ability: Pure Power

Personality: Docile natured and easygoing, Meditite spends most of her time meditating and trying to hone her currently very limited mental powers. She has a tendency to fall asleep while meditating, however. As she was raised around humans since hatching, she has no problems socialising with them, and for the most part Lita has been no exception.

Backstory: Meditite was originally one of Brawly's Pokémon, originally bred to be part of his team for taking on challengers with. However, she was instead gifted to Lita as a starter Pokémon when the girl became a Gym apprentice. Since then the two have become trusted partners, so long as they don't try and battle together.

Nickname: N/A
Species: Aron
Gender: Male
Form: N/A
Ability: Sturdy

Personality: When he's not battling, Aron has a rather cheery demeanour, but he's more than eager to show off his strength when in a battle. However, he's a fairly easy Pokémon to get along with and doesn't pick fights needlessly. He does develop something of a short temper when hungry, which can cause trouble if there isn't anything practical for it to eat nearby.

Backstory: Lita first encountered Aron while exploring Granite Cave with Brawly after she decided to leave the Gym to travel. The two of them managed to venture pretty deeply into the cave before they encountered a Pokémon Brawly thought might be tough enough to help protect her. That Pokémon was Aron, and Brawly sent one of his Makuhita out to soften it up a bit with Force Palm. Although it was a powerful strike, Aron endured it and struck back with a desperate Tackle. Lita promptly threw a Poké Ball and captured it, adding it to her team.

Name: Billie Janssen
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Trainer Class: Lass
Appearance: Billie stands at around 5'6", with a slender, athletic build. She has fairly pale skin, vibrant green eyes and auburn hair that tends to go lighter when she's been out in the sun. Her skin, however, is much more likely to burn, owing to her fair complexion. Her hair is about shoulder-length and she usually leaves it loose, letting it hang freely, with natural curls forming at the ends. She's naturally lean, with strong legs from walking, hiking and dancing, though she lacks some of the curves that her peers have.

Billie typically wears clothing that suits her active lifestyle. Billie used to dress in the Miniskirt and long socks associated with her trainer class, but now that she's out on her own in the world, her clothing has become more practical as she opts for warmth and hardiness over cuteness. Her clothing and bag are often adorned with buttons, badges, feathers, tassels and all sorts of accessories that she thinks are cute; she wears several bracelets and ribbons on each arm and has both ears and her nose pierced. She opts for simple silver studs, practical in nature, and tends to wear minimal make-up unless she's going somewhere fancy and needs to scrub up.

Personality: Billie is an impulsive, energetic girl with a zest for life and a very limited attention span. She's usually the first to react to something and knows no fear, but this makes her reckless and she has been known to charge straight into trouble before now. Billie has a strong moral compass and a sense of responsibility, which gives her a practical edge, but it can cause her to take on too much.

Starting town:
Oldale Town

Backstory: Billie is the only child of Lawrence and Helen Janssen and grew up in the sleepy village of Oldale where she went to school, made friends and did all the normal things that children do. Her father had been born in Sinnoh, and so her grandparents still lived there, with Billie visiting them each summer when school was out. She would spend a lot of the year looking forwards to that holiday, not because she was unhappy at home, but simply that she loved to travel. New places, new food, new Pokemon, there was so much to see and do in the world and for an energetic young girl like Billie, she couldn't help wanting to try her hand at all of it.

As she grew older, Billie's wanderlust only became stronger, so she set her sights on becoming a Pokemon Trainer. She's a competent battler and knows how to raise and care for Pokemon, but Billie isn't really all that interested in becoming a professional trainer or taking the gym challenge, she just wants to explore Hoenn and see its sights. Training a Pokemon is just a means to that end, though Billie loves her two Pokemon dearly and values their company. She doesn't believe in the silly mentality that says a trainer must accept any challenge, or that locked eyes must lead to a battle and, as a result of her somewhat lax approach, neither of her Pokemon are all that strong.

Billie's had a good education and being so close to Birch's lab in Littleroot town means that she's had plenty of time to learn about different Pokemon and how to care for them. She's got a working knowledge of most things to do with Pokemon, even if she lacks the experience, and her wanderlust means that she's read up on most areas in the region with plans to visit each of them and see what they have to offer. A guide book is all well and good, but it's no match for actually being there.

Now that Billie's turned 18 her parents have finally agreed to let her travel the world on her own. She's had more than enough time to prepare for her journey, learning how to pitch a tent, start a fire and cook on it, fix minor rips in clothing, read a map and compass and even a little bit of first aid, all to give her the skills to survive alone on the journey around Hoenn. She can't expect (or afford) to stay in a hotel every night, so she'll have to make do as best as she can on her own.

Pokemon

Nickname: Cinnamon
Species: Pachirisu
Gender: Female
Form: n/a
Ability: Pickup
Personality: Cinnamon is a lot like her owner. She's a bundle of energy, in more ways than one, but without any sort of maturity whatsoever. Cinna is very excitable, very playful, very cute and she can't sit still for any length of time. She's always running around and sticking her nose into things that she perhaps shouldn't. Even though her electric attacks can pack a punch, Cinnamon's not much of a fighter and lacks the competitive streak required to make a good battler.
Backstory: Billie received Cinnamon as a gift on her thirteenth birthday. Her grandparents, living in Sinnoh, bought the Pachirisu from a pet shop and sent it across as a gift for the girl. As a result, Cinna's been bred for the domestic market and isn't much use in a battle. Fortunately, Billie isn't all that keen on battling either, so it's rarely a problem. Since they were brought together, the pair have been inseparable and Billie even seems to be able to understand what her Pachirisu is saying to her.

Nickname: Dill
Species: Zigzagoon
Gender: Male
Form: n/a
Ability: Run Away
Personality: Dill was Billie's first capture, just outside of Oldale Town. He's large and dim-witted, but very affectionate and Dill's loyalty to his trainer is obvious for all to see. He's a more capable battler, making up for Cinnamon's lack of power with his own determination and brute force to get things done. Outside of battle, Dill is quite lazy and spends a lot of time sleeping or just loafing around.
Backstory: Dill was caught on route 102 after a fairly uninspiring battle. He's Billie's only capture to date and was caught out of a sense of necessity, as Billie didn't want to set out into the world with only Cinnamon for protection. Billie has only been training Dill for a few months but their bond is strong and the Zigzagoon knows how to make his size count in battle, even if he's not the smartest of Pokemon.

Name: Jasper von Hammersmark
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Trainer Class: Rider

Appearance: Jasper has a small, sculpted face with prominent cheekbones and a creamy complexion. With a soft touch to his features he comes off as either gentle or striking. His silver hair crowns his face, and falls past his electric blue eyes that soften when he smiles. He's tall and slender with a considerable layer of muscle for his delicate appearance. Jasper has a relaxed, yet strong posture, and walks in long graceful strides. Despite his masculinity, he's often described as beautiful.

His usual attire consists of a leather jacket, gloves, hiking boots and jeans when hes riding his motorbike. He carries a backpack for his immediate necessities, and packs light. However he isn't very materialistic, and has no problem leaving his possessions behind. The only things precious to him are his fathers watch and a ring his mother gave to all her children. Also he likes his bike- so hopefully he won't wreck it.

Personality: Jasper has always been a free spirit. People are naturally drawn to him as he doesn't carry a ruse, or put up any walls. His genuine kindness attracts all different crowds, thus he rarely has bad blood with others. He was raised in a loving home, and had adopted his mother's feminist views and mannerisms. His wanderlust knows no bounds, and he engrosses himself in exploring and meeting new people. Despite his upbringing, he is humble and modest, never flaunting his wealth. Jasper is patient and hard to anger; however that is all the more reason not to push it.

Starting town: Verdanturf

Backstory: He comes from a powerful household, and was raised in luxury and comfort. As the first son, he was expected to inherit his father's corporation. However he's always been a whimsical child, fleeting and impossible to tie down. His doting mother and older sister had always been encouraging of his free spirit, allowing him to roam from a young age. In his spare time, Jasper had often gone backpacking alone to foreign places. Yet for the sake of his father, he withheld from following his dreams to venture as a trainer.
Spending his last few years following his father's steps, Jasper had been the most grounded. The change in him was also influenced from the adoption of their new youngest sister, and he had stopped his explorations. Much to everyone's surprise, this did not sit well with his protective younger brother. Although always opposed to the possible dangers of his adventures and association of strangers, he supported it as his life calling.

Swablu, Mudkip, Sableye
Nickname: N/A
Species: Swablu
Gender: M
Ability: Cloud Nine
Personality: The responsible leader to the laid back and reckless team. Dominant and likes things in orderly fashion, often cleaning up after Jasper.
Backstory: Swablu was hatched from an egg received on one of Jasper's excursions, and was passed over to his younger brother to keep as a companion. This explains their similar personalities and habits. Swablu was given back to Jasper for his journey and was instructed to protect and keep him out of harms way.

Nickname: N/A
Species: Mudkip
Gender: M
Ability: Torrent
Personality: Sweet and caring, yet prone to creating havoc. A brute that is dutiful yet lazy, and likes things done quickly so he can snooze.
Backstory: Even for a Mudkip, his physical strength is abnormal; thus he always had it easy in his peaceful swamp life. Until his encounter with the young and adventurous Jasper. Captured as his first pokemon, he was unwillingly taken everywhere. Over time, Mudkip has grown fond of the adventures and longed for the day to come where they set out on their grand journey.

Nickname: N/A
Species: Sableye
Gender: M
Ability: Prankster
Personality: A prankster with cunning and childlike behavior. He is mischievous and destructively ill tempered, but is learning to adapt to company.
Backstory: Sableye inhabited a dark and isolated cavern most his life, and knew only of violent confrontation. Despite the warnings of the cursed cavern from the locals, Jasper decided to confront the dangers. However even after capturing the wild Sableye, Jasper still has trouble taming him.

Sign me up. I'll get something going.

Name: Brad Huxley

Age: 16

Gender: He's heard spook stories about what city folk say online, but Brad is definitely a boy.

Trainer Class: Rancher (approx.)

Appearance: Brad's doing fine at 5'9. Got some curly black hair on his head, which he sometimes hides messily under a straw hat. His big teeth are pearly white, which stand out all the more when he smiles, and his freckles are as innocent as they get. Despite that, he's clearly quite strong for his age, likely from farm work. Brad journeys out in some lax trainer's clothing, though his overalls and farm boots hint at his roots.

Personality: Brad's a hard worker and an eager learner with a lot of learning to do. He's head over heels so long as he has something worth doing. The boy's as friendly as a person can get; give him someone to talk to and they'll get along like heads on a dugtrio.

Starting town: Slateport City

Backstory: Brad has worked on a farm all his life and never seen a large town, nevermind a city. His home has gotten too small for him now; every time a trainer's passed by with one of their newfound technogadgets he just looks at it slack-jawed.

His pa and ma agreed it was high time he get out of here and see how big the world gets; so of course, Brad would go in the deep end and pick a place as odd as Hoenn. The boy's got an open mind and so much potential. If you'd be so kind as to help him see the world, you won't be disappointed.

Brad has gotten jitters at the thought of leaving his farm home, but he figures nothing could be tougher than what he's done already. Now he can't tell which is going to be stranger - the new pokemon all over Hoenn, or the different people there. He wants to find them all, see how mad it gets, and then return home to his ranch and his proud folks.

Pokémon: Diglett, Ponyta, Mareep

Nickname: Tom

Species: Diglett

Gender: Male

Form: Regular

Ability: Dig, Scratch, Growl

Personality: A born troublemaker. When out of his ball, he tends to roam: thankfully, Brad's become very good at literally roping him in.

Backstory: Technically Brad's first pokemon, Tom was a wild diglet that would mess up the carefully cultivated farmland of Brad's ranch and eat his crops. After enough times being wrangled, they grew an understanding - when it was time for Brad to go, Tom slipped into a pokeball to come along.

Nickname: Jane

Species: Ponyta

Gender: Female

Form: N/A

Ability: Flash Fire

Personality: A fast stallion, Jane has the fiery speed and recklessness of her mother, and will often go hard-wired without Brad to guide her - like when he goes to rein in Tom.

Backstory: Daughter of the Rapidash that is the pride and joy of Brad's father (next to his wife, he swears). Brad was given Jane when it was decided he should travel. This made the farmboy fiercely proud, but after how nauseous he got when riding her to the boat, he's been reluctant to try it again so soon.

Nickname: Peep

Species: Mareep

Gender: Male

Form: N/A

Ability: Static

Personality: Shy and clingy, Peep is a good friend and a forgiving foe. Peep prefers to have company and Brad often has to let him out of his ball - if he stays in for too long, he spends too much time greeting everyone and too little doing whatever he was let out of his ball for.

Backstory: While his fleece is as white as snow, Peep was the black sheep of the flock, and would panic when not given enough attention. Perhaps Brad wasn't the only one who needed to grow up on a journey, he realised, and took him along for some travelling.

I am highly intrigued, but I do have two questions before I decide for certain whether or not I will be joining.
First, would it be possible to play as a pokemon? I feel it would be funner and add more of 'trainer/pokemon' bond type of thing.
Second, why are all evolutions banned for starter pokemons? Plenty of trainers just starting out either use pokemon they have had as family pets, or pokemon that were gifts, and sometimes evolved pokemon are under that list. I would understand banning some of them(because plenty are clearly too op for starters), but others, like eeveelutions aren't really any stronger than a non evolved pokemon.

I'm thinking of getting someone to pair with me for a set Mysterious Sisters, but Fairy Tale Girls sort of have this thing where they're really old, 'old enough to be your mother'.

Could I pull a 12(Physical) Unknown(Real Age) thing?

I do have other potential plans too if that one doesn't work out. Dragon-user and Dark-user that'll mainly use prevos of such mons like Skorupi and Litten to reflect lack of maturity.

Hey there, interested in the RP. Preparing a character sheet to be posted soon.
Also had a quick question - do you have any issues with the starting Pokemon the character has having egg moves? Part of my ideas involves doing that, but if it's not allowed that's fine and I'll figure something else out.

@Kate: Approved.

@Vinn: Looks good so far. If you just add the sign-up stuff for your Pokémon, I'd most likely be willing to approve.

@Creative Confessions: Thanks for showing an interest! Looking forward to seeing what kind of character you make.

@Banjole: If you settle on your starting town and do a bit of proofreading, I'd approve.

@Neo: Since you have multiple questions, I'll break them down as follows:
- The intention was to make this about the trainers, hence why I'm making the sheet about them rather than about just a Pokémon. I do get what you're saying about writing trainer/'mon bonds. It's one reason I made the Pokémon require a sheet of their own. I don't see a problem with having you start as a wild Pokémon (possibly even one on the "banned" list), but I'd likely need to do a slightly amended sheet. Alternatively, you could ask another player if you could play as one of theirs. Playing as a specific Pokémon is an interesting idea, so I don't have an issue with trying it out.
- As for the "no evolutions" rule, the idea is that we're starting on a roughly even playing field - unevolved, level 5, nothing that could wreck everything else in a second (for instance Absol), tank all your attacks with relative ease (such as Spiritomb) or both (like Heracross). While admittedly some evolved Pokémon are pretty weak, I don't think the Eeveelutions are a good example of that - Umbreon is leagues above a Poochyena or Purrloin, for instance. However, those would be generally ones that would evolve pretty early on anyway either because of a low evolution level (such as Wurmple), being easy to tame and train (like Igglybuff) or a bit of both (Azurill, for instance). Hope that makes sense.

@Crow: Not all Fairy Tale Girls are like that, but there's still canonical precedent so I'll keep an open mind to the idea. I'm very curious to see how such a character would pan out!

@pichuJC: I'm cool with the idea (especially since breeders are a thing) and I'm planning on playing fairly fast and loose with the movepools and how Pokémon learn moves anyway.

The problem with limited evolutions, is I always think evolution is based on age. No 20 something year old is going to be running around with an Eevee. They would have had the time and talent to have evolved Pokemon. It means we as trainers would have to start off with relatively young characters to all have an even playing field.

Could we instead have, I setup my Pokemon RPs, that a team should only have 1 Evolve Pokemon, then simply have a weaker evolution. Like Meowstic?

Otherwise, I am not going to play someone at age 18 or 17 because they would have evolved Pokemon.

Or people who have inherited their Pokemon are off the books and tables as well. It greatly limits the range of skills we can have as trainers.

I am still interested by the way. Just throwing out something else to think about. :) :bananaman::donut::bouncy:

That doesn't really fit with my understanding of evolution, which is that it's generally down to a Pokémon becoming stronger and more skilled in battle. There are more aspects that can affect if/how a Pokémon battles such as the environment they're training in, an item they're holding or the bond the Pokémon has with its trainer. The exceptions being evolution stones and trades, which are absolutely nothing to do with age.

I also don't see how age stops you from having weaker Pokémon. Just because you can become a Pokémon trainer at age 11 or whatever doesn't mean you have to. There could be a number of reasons an older character could still be starting out. You could also be someone pulling an Ash and starting with a fresh team in a new region.

I'm going to be sticking to my guns on this one, but I don't think you're anywhere near as limited as you seem to think you are.

Eeveelutions are a great example. If you have a level one Eevee, and it has high happiness during the day when it evolves to level two, bam, Espeon, level 2. If you have a fire stone, bam Flareon level one. That was my point with that. I wasn't saying high level evolved, and that's why I used Eevee. By your logic, nobody can start with Pikachu, though you said that was acceptable. Pichu evolves the same way as Eevee evolves into Espeon/Umbreon, the only difference being the time of day.

As for this, CC was saying it limit's us in terms of experience, not necessarily age, experience just comes with age in most cases. It would be odd if the world was full of people just starting out. Sure, your wanting everyone to be on an even playing field is logical. But if you've seen the anime, or played the games, strategy is more important than evolution. If a person starting out with a Pichu were to fight someone with a raichu, you would say "That's an unfair fight, Raichu's the stronger." I say to you this, I have personally fucked up a Raichu with my beloved Pichu, who might I add was around 5 levels lower, because I had a strategy.

I don't think it does. Your character can start with an experience edge, they just don't have a starting statistical advantage like what evolutions give you. So maybe a resourceful reason why you don't have an evolved pokemon at the start can solve things? Off the top of my head, it could be that:

1) Your character does have an evolved pokemon they like, but they're injured, and out of commission until later on in the story.
2) Your character wanted to start out fresh like Ash, choosing new and unevolved pokemon.
3) Your character's evolved pokemon are elsewhere - perhaps they were given to a friend for their support, or stolen by pokemon thieves.

All of those, and many more, would let you play an experienced character who starts out with 'default' tier pokemon.

I hope you find an option you like, but I think you've lots to consider that you don't need this one rule to be lifted.

EDIT: Also, I've tidied up my profile. Ready to go when everyone else is!

Are you still accepting new characters?

Hello, sorry for the late response. Struggled a lot coming up with something. Hopefully you're still accepting! Let me know if anything needs to be fixed.

Name: Hazel Blackburn

Age: 19

Gender: F

Trainer Class: Poke Fan

Appearance:

Hazel has olive skin and her figure is rather lithe, with a somewhat large bust size, hidden by her oversized shirt, and a pretty basic facial structure with somewhat larger eyes, although it's worth noting she has a band-aid on her nose. She has messy, light brown hair, which sits about three inches above her neck.

She wears a white shirt, which is actually one size too large for her, but she hides this under a small brown jacket. She wears a navy blue skirt, with a black pair of pants underneath, and a pair of similarly colored stockings, with holes around her knees. On her feet, she wears a simple pair of black mary janes, but with surprisingly large socks that look more like leg warmers, with how bunched up they are around her ankles. Around her shoulder, she carries a small brown book bag, which is where she carries her various items & Pokemon.

Personality:

The simplest way to describe Hazel is unconfident. She considers herself to be incredibly weak and useless, though she feels that she can often help those around her & is more than happy to join with others & aid them in their goals, so that they can succeed. As a result, she's far from antisocial, and though she's not a perfect talker, she's surprisingly vocal for a nerd.

Her attitude shifts entirely when she's around Pokemon, and she becomes extremely pleasant and happy. Her love for Pokemon is very clear, and almost borders on Collector-esque, with her even having a preference for rare or unusual Pokemon.

Hazel is a bit clumsy, especially when she has to run, and she often ends up tripping & falling as a result, making her more of a walker as a result (she often quotes that you're less likely to run into Pokemon in the wild & can avoid unwanted battles by walking, as a bit of an excuse).

Starting town: Verdanturf Town

Backstory:

Hazel is a young woman from Verdanturf, who used to go to the Trainer School in Rustboro. As a child, she loved Pokemon and felt more comfortable around them than with the other students, who would generally make fun of her for her clumsiness. She tried multiple times to actually get involved with her fellow students, but managed to mess up every time.

She joined the track team, only to ruin the team's chance at a championship by tripping while trying to run as fast as she could. She then joined a Berry gardening club, only to somehow add too much Mulch, and thus manage to ruin a lot of the fellow club member's rare berry plants. And when she decided to just join the school's junior Pokemon Fan Club, she found out that people from both the the track team and gardening club were there, and thus immediately excused herself, afraid of actually interacting with those people again.

Between the track team & gardening club, Hazel's parents decided that Hazel should catch her own Pokemon. Her father leant her a Poochyena to go and try catching someone, and going into the next route over, she found & obtained an Oddish for herself – A common Grass Pokemon who resembles, well, grass. Hazel immediately fell in love with both of them, and even convinced her father to let her keep the Poochyena. And thus, they became her first Pokemon, and despite not having a lot of human contact, she became quite happy and was able to go through the rest of her time in school just being with those two.

Hazel didn't quite figure out what she wanted to do after she finally finished school, only really knowing that she wanted to get into something that would let her be around Pokemon. After discussing with her parents, she decided that, although extremely late for most people, it would be a good idea for her to go travelling as a Pokemon Trainer. And so, with the two Pokemon she grew up alongside, she began travelling as a Trainer to see if she could find a place for herself in the world.

Pokémon:

Nickname: Sprout

Species: Oddish

Gender: F

Ability: Chlorophyll

Personality: Lax nature. Loves to eat.

Sprout is almost like a mirror image of Hazel in some ways – she's generally pretty unwilling to interact with others, and doesn't move much, since often she's stuck out during the day, her least favorite time of day. However, she loves her trainer and is quite active & happy around her. Sprout will usually try and spend her free time sleeping, though she can be easily awoken and will pretty much always be shocked. She loves eating berries when she is awake, especially sour ones like Leppa, Aspear, or Oran berries.

Backstory:

The first Pokemon Hazel actually caught, with help from her father's Poochyena. As she had gone out during the day, she had little luck actually seeing much Pokemon, and thus she decided to let the Poochyena point her in the right direction; the Poochyena then immediately started digging right next to her, and unrooted Sprout. The actual encounter was pretty unnoteworthy, and consisted of Hazel just throwing Poke Balls until one actually caught the Oddish, out of sheer shock.

Nickname: Fang

Species: Poochyena

Gender: F

Ability: Quick Feet

Personality: Brave nature. Highly persistent.

Fang is the opposite of Sprout in many ways, as she's tough and will stand up against anyone or anything, even though they're only a Poochyena, resulting in it getting itself into trouble. However, Fang often helps push Hazel and Sprout to do things they wouldn't normally do, and she's respected by the two of them.

Backstory:

A Poochyena that her father gave her to help catch a Pokemon, and who Hazel quickly fell in love with afterwards, eventually convincing him to let her keep the Poochyena & even give her a nickname. The Poochyena itself is a bred one, and actually holds a secret – it's capable of performing the technique Thunder Fang, an electric-type biting move, which has been helpful to Hazel for helping protect Sprout from any Flying types who try and attack her.

Are you still accepting new characters?

Yup. Working on a starting post, but I'll still be accepting for a while after. Work's been hectic, and I've got a long weekend vacation coming up, but it's in the pipeline!

Love it. Approved!

Name: Windy Tackett

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Trainer Class: Delinquent

Appearance: Windy has dyed sea green hair, dark brown skin, light blue eyes, and a pink birthmark. She wears an all-green ensemble of a green bike helmet, mint green zipped hoodie, olive green shorts, and green tennis shoes. She is almost always on her red bike, which has a basket in the front.

Personality: Windy is a brash, determined, and stubborn girl. She carries herself with pride, and is confident in everything she does. She comes off as scary to some, but she's not really a bad person so much as someone who gets in trouble too much for her own good.

Backstory:

Windy grew up in Goldenrod City, where she never really fit in. Many of the other kids in town were rich, and had tons of Pokémon, while Windy and her mom only had a Pidgeotto. Granted, that Pidgeotto was her best friend, and got her out of many a situation, but having one Pokémon that has to be shared versus having a full team of six to herself wasn't easy, or fun. She often got into fights, and had a hard time making any friends, besides the Pidgeotto.

Windy wanted to get out of Goldenrod. It wasn't where she belonged, it was too boring, and she hated the town. She wanted to travel. So she saved up for a one-way boat ticket to Hoenn. Finally, she had saved up enough money to buy the ticket, and a little extra for buying things, but before she could leave, her mom surprised her with a gift. See, Windy's grandparents lived in Kanto, and Windy's mom wanted her to be safe in Hoenn. So she asked Windy's grandparents to send a Pokémon to their house, and they obliged, sending Windy a Vulpix. Windy was incredibly happy; sure, it wasn't the Pidgeotto she had grown up with, but that Vulpix was hers alone, and that meant a lot. Besides, Mom needed someone, or something, to keep her company.

So with that, Windy left Goldenrod City, and ended up in Lilycove City. She was just outside of Lilycove when she noticed a Poocheyenna following her around. She decided to let the Pokémon tag along, and captured it in a Poké Ball she had found earlier.

Later that day, Windy stopped into a hotel for the night, and at one point walked down to the front lobby to get some shower supplies. There, she met Angel (Ananfal's upcoming character), who was being denied a room. After threatening the front desk guy, she offered to let Angel stay in her room. The two talked over the night, and clicked really well. After deciding that two heads are better than one, they decided to travel together.

And so Windy's journey begins, with only a backpack, two Pokémon, the clothes off her back, and a red bike to her name....

Starting City: Lilycove City

Pokémon:

Nickname: Red
Species: Vulpix
Gender: Male
Ability: Flash Fire
Personality: Gentle nature, Highly curious

Red isn't really sure how the world works. He's curious and a bit of an oddball, but he quite likes Windy. After all, she's taking him on an adventure, and he really wants to go with her. He doesn't like fighting too much, but can stand his ground just fine.

Backstory: Red was sent to Windy by her grandparents, who run a daycare facility. He was the result of breeding, and was raised in a fairly sheltered environment. Windy's grandparents named him Red after the Kanto Champion, and Windy didn't feel like changing his name.

Nickname: Shadow
Species: Poocheyenna
Gender: Male
Ability: Run Away
Personality: Lonely nature, likes to run

Shadow is fairly friendly, but also a little shy because he's afraid that people won't like him. He's quiet, and wishes that he could make a friend. He's a little cowardly too, but still loves fighting and running about.

Backstory:

Shadow really just wants a friend. Not many people wanted Poochyenna because they were "evil" and Team Aqua and Team Magma used them in trying to push their schemes. So when he saw a young girl who he had never seen in Lilycove before come onto Route 121, he decided to try and make her his friend. It kinda worked.

Darn, I also wanted to be a Delinquent! Are there allowed to be two trainers of the same class, or do you want more diversity? @Vexus

I'd guess it's okay, because there's more than one person that is part of a specific trainer class in the games. If only one of each is allowed though, I'd be willing to change my character sheet a bit so you could be the delinquent! @Ananfal
