Deities existed since long before the beginning of Sumere. Some times the gods advanced civilization, sometimes they held it back, gave horrifying demands of moral evils, but sometimes they advanced Human culture and even ethics. They were unpredictable, sometimes even the principled and virtueous gods could be terrifying.
Eventually, the time of the gods faded away. No one knows what happened to them. Few, if any, even existed at the end of the Crusades in the Middle Ages and the arrival of the Renaissance. By the year 1930, however, they came back. Not knowing who they were, nearly all were born to mundane, purely Human parents.
The year is 2015. In the United States Mid-Western region, strangers convene in a public area, and discover through horrifying events that they are more than Human.
