This is Currently a Work in Progress in my mind and If anyone has any questions, queries, suggestions or critique give me a shout, I know the details below are sparse but I hope its enough to give people the general idea of a backstory.

Roleplay idea – Path to Eden

In the early third of the 21st​ century, Humanity devastated their homeplanet of Terra in the Sol system, wastelands, decay of the food supply, rebellion, war, and chaos tore through many nations bringing many to their knees.

Humanity found its world dying when they realized, their home, the planet of their birth could not sustain their species. The species would be driven into the void to survive, burning the remaining assets and resources of the remaining factions of nations to travel into deep space.

Their salvation was a presumed Star System, Telescopes had shown up to seven planets sitting in the Star's green zone. A distance of roughly 10 light years to travel to reach just a slim chance of having worlds that could quite possibly give Humanity a second chance.

Humanity would set out into the void using a mixture of different population vessels for this target system, Vessel's produced by Militaries, Corporations, Governments and a few Charities. Each group found their own ways to deal with the dangers and risks of long term space travel.

Some would look to use cryogenics developed from the first human attempt by James Bedford, ran by Simulated Intelligence.
Others would use colony ships, great rotating tubes attached to a propulsion system in the hope that their ancestors would be able to feel real earth.

What would the challenges be of this new frontier…


Other Details –
The aim is for this to be more hard Sci-fi, Mag-boots for environments with metallic floors and no gravity, not all worlds having "breathable" atmospheres and issues involving that, trying to find ways to desperately survive in unknown worlds.

I would look to have it be a mixture of Dice rolls supported by player character background and roleplay – Roleplay both guided and aiding with the roll of the dice, for example a characters background and actions might dictate how they are received by different people and how successful they are in different activities.

Other DM's –
Ideally I would want to make it quite an expansive story covering multiple "parties" which could be hosted by a number of DM's/GM's to allow both to tell a story for players and to tell their own story.

Player details –
Players will likely be scattered onto a limited number of vessels, depending on the background and how that would fit in with each other, each vessel/group of players will/could have different circumstances and may arrive on different planets at different times, due to vessels leaving at different times.

Agh. I really like hard sci fi.

I'm in a handful of RP's right now... but i'll definitely be keeping an eye here!

The general idea, if I can gather interest is to have people be prepared to have their first characters for example not make it to the end after all its a brand new world and brand new dangers.

So it would be more likely for people to have multiple characters either after one dies or at once, possibly involved together or in different locations and situations.

Not everyone will be soldiers or fighters, people could be linguists, scientists and engineers. The idea that every background and profession could be important or useful.

Resource management, I was thinking of being critical, for example you might only start with small amounts of resources, breathing gear for example and you can only use it to save a limited number of people but if you save those people, it means your own situation would be at risk as you have now decreased the amount of time you have air for to deal with your own situation.
 
My Intention is likely to have the first character wave start aboard the ESA - Cos

The Cos is a European Collective Designed Cryo Vessel, one of the European Civilian Vessels, A vessel which though it has a dedicated assigned crew placed into cryo, is filled with civilians selected through "random" lottery, the vessel mainly carries supplies to set up outposts or to keep its occupants alive for a time, once they have been pulled from cryo.

While in space it relies on its central module to continually rotate to keep the effects of gravity simulated, to help prevent bone degradation in space, It uses an EM Drive as its primary propulsion system and relies on a pair of small fusion reactors to power the vessel.

The vessel is under general watch by its Restricted Artificial Intelligence: -B

The Vessel has 60 Personnel and 300 Civilians aboard, they will be awaken in cycles to help them maintain fitness and prevent serious bone and muscle degradation in the long trip before being reintroduced to cryo.
 
Major Human Factions

The European Collective - The European Collective is the remnant of the European Nations and their European Army, It grew in strength during the early part of the 21st Century, on Earth/Terra the drew uneasy no fire zones through the countries of the United Kingdom against The America's and along the Finish border down to Turkey, it had lines against The Russian-China Pact.

The America's - With the increase of Nationalism in 21st century after rebellion and revoltion began to spark in nations as the major four began to powerplay, The United States would increase its influence to prevent any close to home attempts by the Russians and China to influence their local nations, Once war had kicked in it brought the vast majority of nations under its control within the America's either by there choice, force or eradication.

The Russian-China Pact - This is a pact of necessity over the favour of each other with other factions building, it was useless for these two to continue to devastate each other and leave themselves exposed to American and European exploitation. Once their pact had been agreed, they began placing pressure on African nations by invasion primarily to bring them into the fold.

African Alliance - Abandoned for the most part by their so-called allies, these nations found themselves struggling to survive, deliberate strikes against infrastructure and the nations having been already been destabilised during the early years of the 21st century and before hand.
Though with their lesser technology, their stubbornness kept them going against all odds in the 21st century, though much has been lost, they were able to put some vessels into space for this new frontier.


Minor Human Factions:

WWO - The World Wildlife Organization built its own specialised Ark in the aim to allow the eventual seeding of a paradise world with Earth/Terra animals, to be able to produce a new home, though it could only produce the funding to create one ark named Eden, It primarily uses the Colony Method, though it did place a number of animals and specific VIP's into Cryo to maintain survival of certain vulnerable species.

STC - Save the Children, funded the production of a cryo ship to take those they believed the greatest and brightest orphans, they could find to these new possible worlds, the vessel though small is their belief that even those without security or family could make themselves a new dawn in a new star system.

Spire - A organisation listed as a terrorist group, though it was initially a cell based political organisation aiming for unification of human nations by any method its cell's believed necessary, during the early 21st century for the greater good of the species, it was eventually categorised by the UN as a terror organisation by its major nations before its cells were targeted and eliminated. Though it is listed as eliminated, a number of bombings fitting their style still occurred though nations refused to believe that any cells could have survived.

The more interest the better, it will also help me with molding the character sheet design etc.
 
perhaps in the character sheet, you could include specialities? like what they would do to help their vessel/group? ex. fixing broken items, storing items, building, farming, medical uses, etc.

Thats the primary area for occupation or traits/flaws, ill add it to an edit to the occupation section of the sheet.

So as far as hard scifi goes, the first ESA ship is powered by an EM Drive. Is the drive on always and it flips at the middle of its journey or was it only on in the beginning to get to a set speed they wanted and will be turned on at the end to slow back down?

The Vessel would initially perform a hard high G burn through its acceleration (the intention to break away from the possibility of other vessel's possibly being a threat), when it reached its designated heading before moving to a low level standby burn to aid the vessel in slowly building speed aiming to avoid any unexpected gravitational phenomenon.

Before reaching the designated star system, reaching the point of required deceleration the vessel would perform a rotating to bring its primary drive to provide thrust in the opposite direction to its current vector of movement.

Introducing - Operations & Strike Teams
Alongside player characters being able to organise for combat type external operations, NPC's will also be able to serve the cause and be deployed where needed by the leading faction of the group.

Operations - Combat or Danger Focus, High Risk, These Operations focus primarily on external duties and are suggestions for what the people can do to help the community (thinking up your own things, within your characters mindset and focus also works), This might be collecting samples in area's with hostile wildlife, engaging hostile forces or recovering assets.

The Point of Operations - To help the Colony gain resources that wouldn't be able to be sustainably produced from within the safety of the colony and to protect the colonists from harm.

Gaining Strike Teams - Strike Teams are gained through making friends and allies, Strike Teams tend to be built up of people with combat experience, however they may have their own traits, flaws and specialisms.

Deploying Strike Teams - The controlling group of (players) will be responsible for deploying strike teams, Deploying of Strike teams without negatives will burn resources, this could be medical supplies and specialist ammunition etc depending on the job and the team.
Depending on the risk of the Operation, teams may be at risk of injury or being wiped out, They can also be deployed to assist players or other strike teams for increased security.
