Research lab Heaphastus was a Cerberus base on a moon near Therum, one where armor and weapons salvaged from alien races were studied and re-purposed, so that it might be used for hunanity's benefit. The moon's location caused a very small number of visitors to explore itor its surrounding worlds. Therum itself was a hostile world where vulcanic eruptions were quite normal, and its and the system it was located in wasn't very interesting either. As a result, it was unlikely anyone would find Heaphastus.

Which was good, because Heaphastus wasn't just meant for salvaging and developing weapons and armor, as the Illusive Man had ordered a far more darker project that had everything to do with the nanotechnology the Reapers used to create the Husks, the foot soldiers of the Reapers.

And yet, the alarms had gone off and the sirens were screaming. "INTRUDER ALERT! INTRUDER ALERT!" Could be heard throughout the base, as sciencetists quickly gathered what they could and soldiers took up arms in order to investigate the threat.

One of them was a certain 20-year old kid, barely more then a recruit who had been in the Cerberus training programm for a couple of years and had arrived on the facility a month or three ago. Heaphastus had been the first time he was stationed on a research lab with important information, and he was determind not to dissapoint his superiors. Gearing up and reloading his gun (even though his duel blades would be his primary weapons, which were currently unsheated.), Jules quickly made his way to the location of the breach, silently turning his head around the corner of the room where the alarm was coming from, to see what was going on inside. This particular room was in the more secured area of the facility, one where members of his tier in the Cerberus hierarchy weren't allowed because...Actually, he wasn't sure why.

If anyone were to see him, they would see a fairly short, yet very lean young adult, with a body not unlike that of a sportsman. He wore the standard Phantom armor, which concealed all personal features, including his face.

When the guards arrived in the breached area, there was a problem. There wasn't a breach. Hell, there wasn't anybody in there, the room was completely empty besides the Cerberus troops brought in. At first glace, it would look as though this was a false alarm, a glitch in the system perhaps, as while the guards looked around, nothing showed signs of tampering with any of the items in the room. However, there was something off about the breached room, in there were things on the ceiling. They looked like fire alarm systems, but when they were analyzed closely, the door suddenly shut.

Jules would be outside the room once it closed, but he would see the strange devices suddenly emit a strange noise, before exploding all around the room. They were concussion blasts, knocking back the soldiers inside with enough force to knock them out even with their helmets on. If Jules tried the radio, he'd find his omni-tool's communication was jammed, with nothing but static coming out the other end. If that wasn't bad enough, suddenly the power inside base went off. All the lights turned to black and the emergency lighting didn't even kick in. Whoever broke in knew a lot about the Cerberus systems it seemed.

Jules had been about to enter the room, when the doors closed and he backed away. As predicted, he tried to contact his fellow Cerberus troopers through omni-tool, but he didn't get anything through. Just...that static noise, and every now and then a yell of some sort. Nothing reassuring. And the thing with the lights didn't help either. Jules had often heard some of the centurions brag about how advanced Heaphastus was, and how situations like this either wouldn't happen or wouldn't last long. Well...The former could certainly be scratched of that list.

Jules considered calling reinforcements, but he remembered that the omni-tool comms were scrambled. And the doors behind him were now on lock-down...So great. He could either do nothing and probably get blamed for all this mess when this was over and get punished for not trying to do anything, or he could try and see what was going in there and quite possibly impress the officers if he were to somehow defeat or even stall the intruders.

After a moment of debating, he decided it wasn't a difficult choiche.

Using one of his swords, he managed to slide the door open just enough so he could slither in, making it look like it was a malfunction in the system that caused it to open, as quietly as he could. Mostly because, prior to doing that, he had activated the cloaking effect on his suit and would now be invisible. For now, he was actually gratefull for the darkness surrounding him, as that made him even harder to see it. Quietly, he moved into the room, dual blades unsheated and still invisible as he pressed a button on the side of his helmet, activating the build-in night vision device, allowing him to see in the dark room, preparing for whatever lurked there. Clearly, someone was sabotaging them, possibly trying to steal weapons or data...But who? The Alliance? The Turian Hierarchy? Spectres? Or maybe a rogue division within Cerberus itself?

Then, at the room, he saw a turian standing at a monitor, trying to hack into it. He gritted his fangs into frustration. "Its not working!" complained the turian. Seeing his chanche, Jules sneaked up on the turian and raised one of his swords, ready to stab the unexspected alien in the back...

Before Jules could get a blow in, a gunshot went off. The thigh to his left leg suddenly had a bullet hole in it, and whoever shot him quickly ran over to kick away his swords. He wouldn't make out who it was, as they wore a helmet with goggles, but they spoke up to the Turian who was nearly stabbed. "Back off from the walls, they could be coming in through the vents." Their voice was distorted, making it to tell who they were, but whoever it was, they seemed to be the leader. They picked up Jules and held a revolver to his head, clicking the hammer of the gun back, a visual threat for Jules.

"Any of you know how to open that door?" It asked back, talking to the scientists. They were hooked up to what appeared to be bombs, with their wrists locked together by handcuffs. There were several bombs, each of which had a timer being set up by other heisters, and each was also wearing goggles. They must've also had heat vision to see whoever came in, likely why the lights were out. The only doorway being the one Jules came from, with two vents overhead. They needed to get whatever was inside that room now, so when no one answered, Layla fired her gun again, this time much closer to one of the older scientists. "Anyone wanna step up and at least give it a try?" The leader asked again, keeping Jules locked together by her arm.

A scientist finally spoke up. "I'll do it." He said, not able to see with the lights off. One of the criminals uncuffed him and dragged him over to the console, where he tried to unlock it. The leader stayed close to the door, keeping an eye on the vents and other door across the room for when Jules buddies would arrive.

Jules let out a brief cry in pain and surprise, surpressing the urge to drop his weapons and start caressing his wounded leg. Unfortunely for him, the mysterious raid leader took take care of that. In a matter of seconds, they had taken him by surprise and overpowered him, untill he was holding a gun to his head. Well, that was a great start of the week, wasn't it?

While the sciencetist was hacking into the computer in order to get the data these bandits wanted, Jules gritted his teeth in frustration, his scowl hidden behind his helmet. He didn't have his swords now, but he had a side-arm. A dagger hidden in his boot that he couldn't reach right now, but also a M-358 Talon. He was about to try and reach for it, without trying to gain the attention of the gang leader, when sounds could be heard from outside the room. Footsteps that were running down the hallway, along with the centurion shouting orders.

"OPEN THE DOOR! HURRY!" shouted the Cerberus officer to the troopers, as they began to work on that exact task. Jules' eyes lit up, glancing to see if this distracted the bandits. If it did...Then he'd have an oppurtunity to escape.

The door was locked shut, and with the power down, the bandits would have more time to get through that door. Out of all the rooms on this base, why did the server room have a generator of its own? You'd think that wouldn't be important, but, something was on that server. Something quite valuable. And the gang wanted it.

For money, of course. As the leader held the barrel of their gun right at Jules' throat, they yelled over to the scientist, "You got a minute before we paint your damn walls red." They'd likely have three, but in case it took too long to get it open, they'd need some time to get out or prepare for a firefight. Thankfully though, the scientist managed to get the door unlocked, and mist already started leaking out the cracks of the opening door. The server room was freezing, but their objective was in sight.

The leader's gaze was distracted as the door open, leaving Jules a moment to make a comeback.

To make things worse, a strange noise suddenly came from the other side. Sure enough, a few seconds later, they could see a blue light come from the other side of the door, sparks flying off. Appearently, the troopers were using plasma cutters to get in.

With the leader being distracted, Jules decided now was his chanche. He quickly stepped hard onto the leader’s foot and rammed his pistol into the leader’s side. The damage wouldn’t be that great, but it could be enough to startle the leader and thus escape. Granted, he was outnumbered and wounded, but...He’d figure out that part later. He could always activate his camouflage.

And that's exactly what he did. Pressing the button on his suit once he escaped, he quickly grabbed his dual swords and lunged forward, the adrenaline rush nulling his pain as he swung his sword at the bandit leader, completely invisible. If he could defeat the leader...Then he'd probably get a promotion! But he had to act quickly, as the doors were starting to give in, the plasma cutters becoming brighter and brighter.

Seemingly the lad forgot that she could still see him, as she had yet to remove the goggles on her face from her mask. Still though, she yelped in pain in how hard he smashed her foot, and the blow to the head was enough to stagger her, but she had worse. Seeing the incoming strike, she managed to dodge her head out of the way, and using her gun still in hand, she flipped it around quickly, smashing the butt end into the phantom's wounded leg.

Spinning around to face Jules' back, she grabbed one of his arms, hooking under his armpit with both hands, kicked his weakened leg hard enough for him to trip over, and with all her force, she spun him around 90 degrees so he landed right on his head. A good smacking noise would echo throughout the room, as Jules would hit the ground hard enough to be knocked out. The door was finally opened by the scientist, and quickly the leader shouted, "Everybody in!"

Really, the prick soldier should've been left there, that fuckin' hurt her head, but the more hostages, the better money she'd get, and god forbid she'd pass up an opportunity to see one of these Phantom soldiers up close, without the blades trying to stab her. Grabbing his legs, she scurried into the server room, closing the door just as the Cerberus soldiers broke through. It'd take another few minutes to break through the door, but considering what they were after, they'd only need one.

There wasn't an exit to the place, but they had one for the ready. "O.P, get the data, I'll get our escape ready!" The leader told him, setting up what looked to be a very small Curta device in her hands.

And indeed, Jules had forgotten about that. As the Phantom's instructors had told him, he was good at sneaking around and he could defenitely handle his swords. But he had a habit of either overlooking or forgetting about small details that, in retrospect, were proven to be quite important. And this just so happened to be one of them.

Another thing that his instructors had told him was that he was a glass cannon. Able to dash out a lot of damage, but he wasn't able to take that much. He was quite fast, so he could dodge many attacks. In combat, he mostly relied on speed, agility and stealth. But if he didn't...Well, you pretty much got the result you got here. He was still in-training, after all.

Behind his helmet, Jules' eyes widened in surprise and he let out a loud, and somewhat comical, yelp as he was smashed against the metal floor. He stayed concious for a few seconds, the world shaking around him, before the leader had achieved her goal in knocking him out, as the Phantom fell unconcious. Or at least, it looked like he was unconcious.

Orfaris quickly obeyed her words, warily looking at Jules for a moment, before he swiftly moved towards a panel and started typing like crazy once he had inserted a USB-stick into it. "Almost got, almost got it...There! Got it!" he called, as he finished downloading the data, and deleted the local copy of the Cerberus network. That way, Cerberus wouldn't have access to their own information and data anymore. But they had. Which meant that Cerberus would be quite easy to manipulate into paying them in order to ge it back.

He swiftly pulled out the stick and put it away into one of his pockets, before looking at his leader. "All set and ready to go!" he said, before arching a plated eyebrow at the Phantom that had been trying to kill him just minutes earlier. "Wait...we're taking him with us?" As a turian, he defenitely didn't like the idea of taking someone from an anti-alien organisation with them.

The leader dragged Jules into the center of the cold, icy room, responding to the Turian with. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, alien racists. But, if it helps, he's not coming back to the base with us." She started punching in some codes to the small device in her hands, quickly making sure they were the correct ones. It was easy for the dials to slip into another number if you didn't pay attention, and traveling to another universe you don't know is a massive pain in the ass. Layla's done it before, and while it didn't end badly, she was certainly mocked for it by her 'friend.' It's a very long story, one involving hentai-- Anyway,

The device was set up, and everything was ready to go, but she continued to her Turian second in command, "I'd like to see how these guys tick. Might be good for us to use one day." After that, Layla quickly pressed the small button on top of her device, and within seconds, a flash of neon green surrounded the room, and once the Cerberus troops got in, they'd find the room completely empty. The servers were fried, whatever the flash was, it acted like an EMP to the electronics, but there was no sign of the attackers anywhere.

They just vanished into thin air.

As Jules slept, the decision's to keep him alive was a debating point to several in the gang, most of whom were not the biggest fans of his current employer, and would've enjoyed seeing him torn apart piece by piece. The leader, however, didn't falter in defending Jules..... Well, not as in he's a young kid. When they found that out, the leader did feel he was simply too young to do this, but then again, she did hit him really hard in the face and worked with a terrorists group.

Really, the age thing didn't phase her too much, it came and went, and with it ideas of testing the phantom. Recruiting him didn't seem like an option, too many people hated him, so she wanted to see his abilities up close and personal. When Jules would wake up once again, he'd find himself in a rather 'unique' position.

If you thought he would be in bed, his leg bandaged up, dressed in fine pajamas, sleeping on a king sized bed in a house along a sunny beach, all of which is on a remote island. You'd be wrong.

Instead, he'd find himself upside down......... Covered in webbing. In a massive open area, like an abandoned arena underground. And next to him were others also trapped in webbing, but their corpses were decaying, as if their blood was drained. Oh, and there were several giant spiders on the ground and above on the ceiling.

Frostbite Spiders, to be exact. Quite the massive change in location scenery, don't you think?

“Ugh...” groaned Jules as he started to wake up, his hazel-colored eyes slowly starting to open, blinking a few times. What happened? He remembered fighting some weird invaders who had broken into the server farm, and that he had fought the leader. What happened? Had he lost? He started to struggle against what he assumed were ropes, and frowned deeply behind his helmet. Yeah, he probably had. And now he was being held hostage...Shit. He knew that Cerberus usually didn’t pay for those, especially not recruits. Oh well. This wasn’t the first time he was in a difficult situation. Once he got out of these webbs, he’d...

...

Wait a second...

Now fully awake, the kid’s eyes snapped open wide and he looked around his envirement. And they widened even further when he saw what it was. An underground cavern with huge spiders and horrible, drained-looking corpses everywhere...God, he felt himself getting sick. While there were quite some things Jules had a reasoneble and healthy amount of fear for, there wasn’t much he was downright terrified of, what would send him running for the hills. But ever since he was little, bugs had always bothered him. Snakes? No problem. Varren? He had begged his parents for one as a pet when he was younger. Rats? He thought they were cute, to be honest, and even had some as pets when he was still a kid...Or well, a little kid. Bugs? Oh hell fucking no!

As the creatures started to stirr, he tried to move his hands in an attempt to grab his weapons. Though to be honest, he wasn’t even sure if he still had those, or if the bandits had removed them. Gruntend, he tied to struggle against the webbs, before concluding this wasn’t gonna work. So, he tried something else.

The young Phantom took a deep breath, and his body started to glow blue...and then, with a biotic blast, he managed to rip apart the webbs and blow away any spider that was close to him as well. With the webbs broken, he landed on the ground perfectly on two feet. He was a Phantom after all. Unfortunely, he let out a hiss of pain, wincing as he felt a flare of pain in his leg where the leader had shot him. Shit...He was wounded, dissorintied and surrounded by weird spider-like aliens. Could it get any worse?

He instantly checked if the bandits had taken his weapons or not. There was some stuff laying around the cave from the spiders’ previous victims, but he of course prefered to use his own blades and gun. Though if those had indeed been taken...Well, time to improvise.

“Ugh...” groaned Jules as he started to wake up, his hazel-colored eyes slowly starting to open, blinking a few times. What happened? He remembered fighting some weird invaders who had broken into the server farm, and that he had fought the leader. What happened? Had he lost? It didn't feel like his hands were tied together...Odd. You'd think you would tie up a captive...Unless he was still back at base, laying either in the server farm, or in the infarmary. But as the young Phantom opened his eyes, he quickly realized that wasn't the case. He couldn't recall there being stalactices and old fashioned lanterns in-

...Wait a minute...

Jules set up straight, his eyes wide as he looked around quickly. He was in a cell, but not a high-tech one. If anything...it seemed like he was in one of those mines from a Western film. Did the bandits take him to another planet, a mining colony that lacked a bit in terms of advancement? Or had Cerberus sentenced him to forced labour as a punishment for failing to stop the bandits?

Either way, he needed to get out of here. Now, assuming the bandits had taken his swords and pistol, he looked around for anything that could help him escape in a stealthy fashion. His biotics might be usefull, but they were noisy and he wasn't that good at controlling his powers yet. So that would cause unwanted attention. And he didn't like the odds of him against a horde of marauders in tight quarters in unknown territory. So Jules instead looked for something that could help him pick the lock. In thought, he scratched his neck, as the collar was...Wait, what collar!?

Jules looked down at the strange metal object and frowned deeply. A collar? Really? It wasn't even attached to anything! He tried to open it, but then he suddenly received an electrical shock and he let out a brief, but loud yelp of pain, mostly because he hadn't exspected it. That complicated things. He imagined that, if he were to get to active, the collar would shock him again...Hence why they probably hadn't put ropes on him. There was no need to.

As if on cue, as Jules tried to find a way out of his cell, the door on the opposite side of the room opened. Walking through was a red haired woman, wearing punk rock like clothing, a tattered jacket, a shirt that was short enough to show her waste, and some baggy military fatigues with black shoes. She did not match the setting of a old fashion jail cell the town Sheriff would put criminals in.She had a small smirk on her face as she came over, grabbing a chair from the side, pulling it over, and sitting down just far enough away that Jules couldn't grab her, but close enough to view her face. It was quite gorgeous to say the least. "Hi." She said, facing Jules while sitting backwards in the chair.

"I'm Layla. You are?...." She waited to hear his name back. "Couldn't find a name tag on your gear, so figured to ask." She spoke with an Irish accent, and didn't sound like she had any sort of vindictiveness towards the man with a Belgian accent. It was quite peaceful so far, if not for the jail cell and collar around his neck.

The kid blinked in surprise when he saw Layla, taken off guard by both her seemingly friendly demeanor, and the fact that she was quite buetifull. His eyes briefly gazed upon her exposed stomach, but he quickly looked up at her (admittingly) gorgeous face again and under normal circumstances, he'd probably have blushed furiously. Indeed, she didn't seem that dangerous or threatening at first glance, but Jules knew better. She was one of the bandits, after all and she had a certain...authoritive vibe to her, even with her friendly demeanor.

So with that, Jules somewhat scowled at her, looking a bit away, both to hide his blush and the fact she was kind of distracting. "If you wanna interrogate me, then you can forget it. I ain't no snitch." he replied. In truth, he honestly didn't know that much important information, nor was he a valueble asset to Cerberus. So no ransom either...Of course, Jules figured that revealing that would probably shorten his lifespan.

Layla could see him eyeing her up, and she wasn't oblivious to her looks. Sex and beauty got you things, and Layla worked many a person with that mindset. Manipulation was easy if all they wanted was someone to sleep with. So seeing Jules look up at her stomach, admire her face, then look down to hide the very obvious blush, Layla couldn't help but mentally go, 'awwwwww~ He's blushing.' Like a mother would a baby child looking up at her in a crib. The lad's young and stubborn, but under that there was a kid lookin' for love..... Alright, maybe not, she admittedly couldn't help but think up cliches like that for Jules, but Layla figured this would be fun.

"Relax. I doubt you do know anything. You're a grunt after all, I don't expect you to tell me the Illusive Man's identity." She remarked, pulling something out the pocket of her backpack. It was a canteen of water, which she slid over to the bars for Jules to grab. He likely was thirsty, since the cell was quite hot. "I just wanna talk a bit. Get to know the background guy you don't see often." The goal was convincing the guy she was friendly, and maybe if he wanted out the cell, she'd make him an offer he couldn't refuse. How they got there, she had an idea, but the details were a bit foggy. "So what's your name, Belgium?" She nicknamed the lad.

Jules blinked in surprise as he was offered the water and took it with some hesitation. Giving both Layla and the canteen a weary look, he took a sniff of the water and looked into the canteen. It didn't smell or look weird...So he took a small, hesitant sip, just in case something was wrong with it. He waited for a few seconds, and then took another, slightly bigger one. So far, so good…

“Thanks.” He said, giving the woman a small smile. He was fairly sure he wasn’t going to be killed...Yet. If they wanted him dead, it would have already happened...So what did they want? He assumed Layla was doing some sort of ‘good cop’ act.

However, when Layla called him 'Belgium', he scowled at her. "Dutch. I'm Dutch." he corrected her, slightly annoyed. It was a little known fact that the Dutch and the Belgiums were natural enemies, and one of Jules' personal pet peeves was when he was confused for a Belgium or a German, as those three countries were generally thrown together like they were one and the same. "And judging from the accent, I'd say you're from either Ireland or an irish colony? Like...Arvuna?" he guessed. Honestly, he found the accent kind of...attractive. It was honestly kind of odd to explain. Either way, he took it as an oppurtunity to avoid the topic of Cerberus.

"Oh, a Dutch-y, eh? Easy to confuse the two, you don't pronounce your T-H's as a W, so that got ride of the German option, so it was a coin flip between them." She got a small kick out of his slight reaction, since she always found it funny when people got angry over people's confusion of their nationality through their accent. Though admittedly, she realize the hypocrisy in her thoughts when she remembered the last time someone thought she was from Scotland. Didn't end too well. "I'm from Ireland. Born, but raised in the west of the US. Though i never forgot my roots." She continued, answering his question.

She shifted slightly in her seat, leaning her chain along her hands as she looked him over. He was cute, no question about it, but as Layla always was, she knew opportunity could come from her looks, so how she sat there, looking Jules straight in the eyes, it was like she was posing in a magazine. Her looks were glowing under the sunlight, as she looked curiously at the Dutch soldier, enough that he was sure to notice how beautiful she was naturally.

"So how'd a kid like you join Cerberus? Can't imagine it'd be easy joinin', since I was always under the impression they were more English-speaking humans first than the rest of the world." She asked.

“It was easier then you think. Cerberus is always eager for recruits loyal to the cause, no matter what ethnicity they are...Well, human ethcnity, but you get my point.” Shrugged Jules, refering to Cerberus’ racist point of view.

He hesitated a bit at revealing more information, shifting a bit as, indeed, he noticed how buetifull Layla was. Gorgeous, even. And considering he had been part of a terrorist organisation for a couple of years, he didn’t have much exsperience with women. Especially older, more exsperienced women like Layla...

But in the end, he decided that revealing some personal information wouldn’t hurt, and neither would coöperating...for now, at least. Some Cerberus members were so loyal to the Illusive Man they prefered death over talking. Jules, however, wasn’t one of those people.

“Well...The colony where I grew up was often raided by batarian pirates.” Started Jules. It was a common story of people who came from colonies at the edge of Alliance territory, as neither the Alliance or the Council considered the raiders enough of a threat to intervere. “During a raid, Cerberus once saved my town from those four-eyed marauders. A couple of years later, I decided to approach Cerberus.”

The kid winced, both at the memory of how his family reacted, and upon discovering that Cerberus was different from what he had exspected. Rather then go around the galaxy and defend people from pirates and slavers like the one’s that raided his colony, it had mostly just been guarding things he wasn’t even told what purpose they served.

“I suppose you could say my vision of Cerberus at the time was a bit...romantic, if you will.” Admitted Jules to Layla.

Layla actually chuckled at his last line, Cerberus being romantic. It's ironic when you think about it, a group like them being seen in such a romantic light. It would be like giving the Taliban a romantic light, something just seemed so wrong with it, but sounded all too funny to hear as well. "I'm guessing your parents were alright in you joining? If they're still around, of course." She asked. Most kids who joined Cerberus didn't have family to back to, and perhaps had a small grudge against aliens for their deaths. Jules didn't seem like a kid who'd be into human race first type of beliefs, or rather would be racist towards alien life.

Then again, she could be wrong. Most people she met who worked in Cerberus never seemed likely to have any agenda against aliens. They cared about giving humanity a chance in a massive universe, not be controlling over it. Though if she talked to people in the lower levels, soldiers and commanders, perhaps a few people up at the top, there'd likely be some fellas with beliefs of making interment camps for aliens who mess with Humans. Give them poison like they were rats infesting a home.

............ God, her thinking got dark right there
