Oriental Adventures (Revival)

  1. Samurai Shadows (O.A. Revival)

Doing a revival of my last Oriental Adventures game with a few of the previous characters... others who are familiar with the D&D rules can join in with new or old characters, as they so choose.

    When we last left off...

The town of Renga Murai is in disrepair, stones and bricks strewn across the street. Bodies lay where they had fallen, and the fires had spread unchecked... though the light of the fire allowed a glint of light to reflect off of a small scroll that had fallen from the armor of the bandit's horseback leader.

Bound with an obsidian seal - obsidian known to be the corrupt, bloody form of the more holy material, jade - carved in the image of a spider. The note was written in a language that few could understand - a language that hurt the eyes of those who looked upon it.

However, the signature was clear as day, a name that - even if unknown to those in the group - sent a chill down each spine. A name that many dare not say, for fear of attracting his attention.

The signature was of "Fu Leng"... known better as the Fallen Kami, a being of such grand evil and malevolence that an entire part of the world has been blackened by his influence.

In fact, this spider symbol is clear as tattoos or as designs on the armor of the fallen 'bandits'. What this means to those is unknown, but one thing is certain: No good will come of it.

This game starts at level 2, with starting gold for a first level character. The stat generation is 40 point buy, with all books open - as long as they relate to the setting and character involved. You can have a single Flaw in exchange for a Feat. Your character must have a backstory.

The world was just fine for Ropp'tch'tch when she was young. Extraordinarily pretty, she was one of the more popular little gatherers, taking from the humans with her brothers and sisters, providing a great deal of wealth and food for the small offshoot of the tribe that she belonged to.

The humans did not like that. The humans did not understand, they had so much food, what little the Nezumi took was meaningless! However, the greedy humans got the larger humans with the frightening armor and glinting, giant knives to come - the Samurai. The family of ratlings was easily killed off.

However, several spirits smiled on the young Ropp'tch'tch. The spirits guarded her, and cloaked her - making her appear human to the samurai... she was not aware, and huddled in the corner... crying and waiting for the blades to fall upon her. The samurai, seeing only a frightened human girl, lifted her up... 'rescuing' her from the fate that they had intended for all ratlings.

She was given over into foster care... but a few moments after the samurai left, her form wavered, and she was, once more, a ratling - and fled. She has been making a meager living off of the humans, vengence already slaked from the death of her family as she stole and made horrible deals with the humans, shattering their economy. Her reverence to the spirits of Trickery and her own Guardians has given her some incredible spirit allies... and her ability to appear human for a good deal of time helps, too.

Kiyohi, when he turned 14 nearly dishonored himself. He found the gempukku tests difficult and almost failed the final one. The decision was almost made to order his seppuku as his first and last act as an adult but instead because he had still technically passed the tests he has send away from the Matsu to study with the Akodo. The Akodo ways conflicted with his Matsu nature but he cake away with a measure of the Akodo restraint.

Next he sat at the feet of the Ikoma and studied the works of the masters and respect for history and finally stayed among the Katsu and while he was never accepted as no outsider can into their secrets we learned of their origins in the giant lions once hunted by Akodo himself and of their deep respect for the ancestors

After a few years his lord recalled him into service and it was another year before the castle was attacked by unknown ninjas who slaughtered almost everyone including lord Hakoda, their bodies covered in spider's web. Kiyoshi, dishonored by his failure and shamed by his survival was summoned to the clan stronghold where he was honored for his bravery, and for following Hakoda's edicts even after the lord's death. Without his lord's permission to die he seeks to redeem himself by following the wishes left to him in a letter by his lord.

His wooden sandals clacked loudly on the wooden floor of the walkway. Plain white kimono, broken only by a golden belt and black armband was bright in the night under the coloured lanterns making the bright fabric glow as he walked. He stopped outside one of the doors and slipped off his sandals as the screen slid open, the muffed music growing a little louder as the area was flooded in light and he walked through to the bowing of a servant.

The room that greeted him was noisy, two geisha played a tune while another danced, her movements accented by two fans, several men sat in a semi circle and the oldest gestured for the newcomer to sit on the free mat next to him.

“Honored greetings, thank you for invi.....” he was silenced as the older samurai raised a hand.

“I did not invite you for idly conversation..... I have known you to long to not see the change. You are troubled Kiyoshi.” he paused as one of the geisha poured the younger samurai sweet smelling tea. “Remember what they taught you at Akodo.” he turned away “Now I won't talk about this anymore, for now try to enjoy yourself.” he indicated the tea and turned to talk to the person sitting on the other side of him.

Kiyoshi sighed taking the tea in both hands and blowed across it before taking a sip.

    “We... didn't see them...”

A shadow moved, the group of samurai turned..... a scream behind them as a samurai fell....

“There was no way to tell who they were, or how many, they were everywhere at once.”

The two samurai stood back to back, a sound made then turn. The other fell to his knees, a shurinken in the back of his neck....

Kiyoshi was alone, turning at every sound... fear gripped his heart.... a sound behind him,... a silhouette on a screen...... he thrust the point of his sword through the paper, a body fell through, Kiyoshi's sword still embedded.....

“JUNEKO!” he cried out at the memory.

“He sat holding the body of the female samurai..... here eyes glassed over, staring into his, he stood and moved, the castle oddly silent..

“Juneko......” he sobbed, alone in the night.

Backstory: For as long as she can remember, Ryoko has loved being an Utaku. She loved the horses, the hard life, the work, the training. She trained hard, she fought hard, and she vowed to become the greatest Utaku battle maiden who had ever lived. This was no small feat, of course, but for one as spirited as she, she would accept no easier task.

When the time came, the young Utaku packed up her things and her gold and left. It was time for adventure and to show Rokugan what she was made of!

Ryoko is headstrong, proud, and not afraid to show her strength. She is, for the most part, friendly and easy to like, provided you get past her odd sense of humor and method of "kill first and let the Kami sort it out."

[IMG]History: It has been said that the Giant Warrior known as Cao Dian was born on another continent, that he was adopted by his Crab Clan parents ins ecret and hidden from the noble Samurai.
Cao Dian himself says nothing for or against this, simply stating that his past was and is as such irelevant.
He rose to prominence fighting demonic enemies and made a name for himself despite his low station.

he has bought armor and weapons, training himself in the art of the glaive and the long sword in the fires of battle.

The raider lord stepped back, the bulwark of steel that stood before him, watching as the heavily armored mans glaive swung from left to right, up and down in a dance of death, bodies littered the ground around the blue armored warrior and sweat trickled down the raider's neck as he stepped back slowly, calculating the odds of his survival.

as the last of his warriors slumped to the dirt, blood gushing from his severed neck, the Raider leader tured to run, but felt a sharp pain lancing through his left leg, and as he fell he looked to his leg, grimacing in agonised dismay as he saw a flat steel broadsword had peirced his laquered armor on both sides, and that it bore the engraved symbol of an armored fist.

"you steal and ransack these peopel no more" a voice behind him boomed, and the Bandit king looked up in time to see a Glaive sweeping towards his neck, he made to shout, but cold steel cut through his windpipe, and his head toppled backwards, his mind still funtioning for a few short, terrifying seconds.

Cao Dian retreived his sword from the Bandit's leg, and wiped it on the corpses clothes before sheathing it, as he did so, one of the peasants that had stood beside him to fight off the bandits gave a cheer of triumph, and the Fist of the Peasantry let his head fall backwards and laughed.
once again, wolves had come to find sheep and instead found sheepdogs.

I don' even blink as da boy snatches da toy outta my hands. I just let 'em take it. Hey, I ain't gonna judge! So what if he carries 'round some lil doughnut? Do you! Besides, doughnuts are fuckin' delicious, though I'm kinda forgettin' how they exactly taste. Damn...has it really been dat damn long since I had a doughnut??

    ...Dat's some crazy shit.

"Oh, a'ight den," I say while shruggin, though I only do it awkwardly wit one shoulder so I don' move Sylvie's head. I den smile wide at 'em, flashin' all teeth. "Glad I could help ya out." However, my smile turns into a look of confusion when he starts blushin' 'n trippin' ovuh his words while talkin' wit Sylvie...Ah shit. She's got on da "I'm fuckin' wit emotions" look. Woo boi...well, at least it don't look like an emotion that'll hurt 'em.

When he leaves, I let out a long long whistle b'fore sayin', "He got dem track feet! Look at 'em dip!" I laugh a bit while slappin' my knee. Seriously, dat boy could run fo' da Olympics if he wanted to! You go on ahead wit ya fast ass! I can tell dat Sylvie's apology ain't all dat genuine, which ain't surprisin'. It's hard to get through dat shell of hers, so most of da time she ain't gonna feel legit regret fo' what she does unless she cares bout ya. I basically fuckin' lucked out on dat one. But still, she got a lil carried wit it towards da end, which could only mean...

Her head falls back on my shoulder, her breathin' slow. Yep. She needs mo' sleep, stat. "A'ight, a'ight," I get up wit her in my arms, holdin' her as if I was her mother or some shit. I mean, hey, I just might want kids of my own some day, but dat means meetin' someone, fallin' in love wit 'em... "Bout time fo' somebody to get some rest." I snag anothuh muffin b'fore lookin' back at Scott.

"We gonna go take a nap 'n talk more bout dis after, if dat's cool wit you?"

Heanius came from the Tsuruchi family of the Mantis Clan. While not a direct descendent of the founder, he still maintains the trademark skill with a bow that his ancestors possessed, being among the elite not only in the world, but in his own clan. While not having the reflexes to perform in speed shooting, his accuracy from long distances was impressive, and the power behind each shot more so.

While his skill with a bow was fearsome, he never took up the mantle of the samurai, finding their code to be more troublesome than it was worth, and decided instead to be a bounty hunter. Having just successfully taken down a target that took him all the way into Unicorn lands, he begins to head south back home.

History: Prettz was born the son of a Mist Spirit and a mortal mother. This mother was desperate for a child to call her own, and tried with several husbands to concieve a child. Alas, this did not work. One night, she was out for a misty night stroll, and looked over a pond nearby, and began to cry. A Mist Spirit saw this, and approached the woman. She told the spirit of her plight, and the Spirit told the woman she would bless her with a child, if she would promise to take care of it at all costs as a child. She agreed, and 9 months later, Prettz was born. Prettz was born in the city of Yufuku and Heigen Toshi, the largest marketplace in the world. Hence, he learned many languages and skills, including the art of the "silver tongue". He also discovered he could change into anyone he thought about, or even what he could imagine. He met with the same Mist Spirit that birthed him and he told him of his gift: the ability to change his physical characteristics to anyone he thought of, at will. He began to use this ability to greater effect, helping those that were being terrorized by others, or set wrong from right, getting in trouble with the law numerous times. Prettz also learned the art of music and of the bard, from a wandering traveler he befriended. At around his 20th birthday, he told his mother that he had to see the world. He had yearned to travel ever since he learned how to become a bard, having heard fantastical stories of strange and wonderous lands. Reluctantly, he allowed him to leave, on the promise he would return safe to her. He embarked outwards, to wherever the wind blew him, maybe to join a group of adventurers, or to make his own way across Rokugani.

-Decisive Strike: As a full-round action, make one attack with an unarmed strike or a special monk weapon, using your highest base attack bonus but taking a –2 penalty on this attack roll. If the attack hits, it deals double damage (as does any other attack you make before the start of your next turn). If you use this strike to deliver a stunning attack, increase the save DC to resist the stun by 2. This is an extraordinary ability.
    -Unarmed Strike (1d6)

-Weapon Focus (Unarmed Strike): +1 on attack rolls with unarmed strikes.
-Earth's Embrace: While grappling, if you pin your opponent, you deal critical damage (double normal unarmed damage) each round that you maintain the pin. You hold your opponent immobile as normal, but you must also remain completely immobile, giving opponents (other than the one you're pinning) a +4 bonus on attack rolls against you (but you are not helpless)

No Thumbs: You take a −2 penalty on all ranged attack rolls.

    Monk's Outfit (Dragon Mon)
20ft. Rope (Used as a Belt)

It was years ago when he found the dragon monastery. It was an interesting group of humans - all shaven bald, tattooed and all mimicking the same punching motions. He had found it terribly amusing, like a setup of birds all singing the same song... he was amused enough to stay, and keep watching. They didn't chase him away, or glare at him... or even look at him. He supposed it was because he was in his fox form, and that he was being sneaky... this was not the case. He had given away his true self immediately to the sharp-eyed monks... and so he continued to watch... for hours... days... months... all the while, he envied the one who taught them... respected and strong, with all these little humans to do what he wanted... there were no riches involved, but the young fox had assumed that meant it'd be easier to rise up in the ranks, here.

At night, the young fox snuck into the Teacher's chambers... and, turning into his hybrid from, challenged him to a fight. It was no contest - soundly thrashed by the old monk, the young fox lay on the ground - bruised, bloodied, and expecting a final death blow... it never came.

Bei fled, and did the same thing, every night for a week - each time, the old man easily besting him. Finally defeated, in body and in spirit, the fox offered his servitude to the man.

Instead, the monk offered a different sort of punishment... to train at the monastery as one of his pupils. At first, the young fox laughed at it... but... slowly, he realized the strength he could gain... and accepted. It was not easy doing, as the order of the monastery rankled against his very nature... and yet... somehow, slowly... he came to enjoy it.

Naming the fox 'Bei', the old master gave him no special treatment - he was like every other monk there... save that the teacher forbade Bei from turning human, telling him that it was dishonest. Coming to respect the old man, Bei agreed to these terms. Soon, however, wanderlust began to creep into the foxes' heart - as the old teacher reached the end of his long life. Instructing his students to go out into the world and learn, so that they might pass on his teachings, each went off in search of their destiny.

Bei went last, caring for his mentor until the old man passed away.
