Operation SWRD - DAWN/BREAK

Old Commercial District
Coalition Headquarters

The Coordinator
The Coordinator

"Following the reports of the Scouting Expedition, I'm certain we'll be able to proceed forth with Operation SWRD. After the reclamation of the Residental District, we have an actual foothold to Beacon, now. However, there's still the ever present issue of... Ugh, I don't even need to say it. Regardless, our foothold is still tentative. One wrong move -- or even worse, complacency -- will result in us losing it once again. As it stands, we'll simply have to double down, possibly even pull a portion of our forces out of the Agricultural District."

The Overseer
3 - oP30hd4.png

"We can't afford to lose Agriculture. If that were to happen, Vale's stability would quickly degrade back into the state of the initial Fall. This is compounded by the fact that we have yet to even regain the Industrial District."

The Instructor
8 - 99h0HYb.jpg

"Who do we have to thank for that, again? Last I recall, I pushed for a complete assault to reclaim Industrial. Now, we're stuck running around with our tails between our legs, feigning a strength that we don't have. We have a singular warehouse on the Commercial-Industrial Border, and our resources are rapidly declining. Launching an assault on Beacon without any certainty that it is even there, without knowing if it will function as your Witch says, is absolutely foolish."

The Witch
4 - 2Gezbu9.jpg

"I don't need that sass from a snot-nosed brat. Also, I am no one's Witch, boy. Regardless, I have come into contact with the artifact once before, and if I am correct, we can use it to restore our memories. If we can achieve that, then we'll know for certain who our enemies are. If that means sacrificing the Industrial District for a bit longer, then it will be a worthwhile sacrifice. I would think that an Instructor would be able to think in the long term, but apparently not."

The Huntress
7 - TDqLLpk.jpg

"Too much talk. Grimm have become stronger. More dangerous. Strange Grimm are appearing. Never before seen. Strange. Very, very strange. Must be dealt with. Home is filled with Grimm. Ugly, strange Grimm. Too smart. Not right. Want them out of Home. Silver-Eyes knows."

The Silver-Eyed Girl
1 - bsT5oqG.png
"Gods, this is such a bummer. Like, ugh, she's right. Tons of weird, gross lookin' Grimm at the Forever Fall Forest. Then, like, the Southern Forest is, like, lowkey becoming even worse. Then there's the Grimm that keep tryna breach the Upper Class from the air and sea. I can't, like, keep holdin' them off, dudes 'n' dudettes. My eyes're like, gonna burn out. Or start bleedin'. Y'all ever cry blood? 'S mad edgy, y'know. Anyhow, I'm hella tired, y'all. Pick somethin' 'n' like... get it done. Dunno how sendin' Ms. Attitude and Mr. Crime Daddy to Beacon will work out, but like.. It better work. Or else we'll be like, hella screwed, y'all."

Upper Resident District
Coalition Outpost - Animus

Night Before Operation SWRD

Various Coalition Airships had landed in the northern district of the Old Residental District. The power had been restored so the entire Coalition Zone was lit up, a beacon in the darkness. The ships had deposited the members of Operation SWRD, the two teams being ferried to the designated Coalition Zone -- several blocks of the Upper Residental District having been closed off with the zone itself being designated Outpost Animus. It was designed to give members of Team BLAC and Team NMRE time to unwind and enjoy one last night before the Operation. Several shops had been reopened, at least temporarily, to give the illusion of some bit of normalcy.

So, this was it. After two years of running back and forth, fighting off Grimm and every asshole that wanted to capitalize on the situation, there was -apparently- an end in sight. At least, that's what they said. Noire couldn't be certain if he believed it, however. It seemed too idyllic for his taste. Too convenient. While Noire typically spent a majority of his time on his own, doing whatever he was ordered to do, he was still aware of the general morale of the Coalition. People were getting tired, especially the ones who had been fighting for the entirety of the past two years. That and a lack of communication with the outside world only made things worse.

If Beacon and Vale were in this state, then how was the rest of Remnant?

He wore a scowl on his face as he walked through the brightly lit streets, his gaze shifting from building to building as he thought back to before The Fall. He remembered coming here with his Team -- when they were all freshmen at Beacon. He rarely thought about that, though. They were just old memories that didn't do much for him except throw his focus off. It was impossible to ignore those thoughts now, however. Carmellia was on Team BLAC and, once again, he was partnered with Sunny. It gave him a strange sense of nostalgia.

How gauche.

"We're leaving out in the morning and we're free to spend the night however. I'd advise not going too crazy, or else you'll be useless tomorrow." Noire said, glancing over his shoulder to the others. He had spent the majority of the trip from the Upper Class District in silence, not really having much of anything to say. Perhaps he should have tried to talk to Sunny or Carmellia properly, but he pushed that aside. He didn't want to deal with any form of sentiment. He went his separate way after The Fall for a reason, after all. "Do what you want. I'm going for a walk." He wanted to clear his head and, more importantly, look around. There were things he wasn't certain about still. Something felt off, but that could have simply been his pessimism and cynicism at work.

Sunny was lackadaisical fiddling on her guitar as she sat in their base of operations, waiting for the speech from her team leader. Noire was someone special alright. He wasn't established as leader when they were together back at Beacon. He had always been about doom and gloom, so that was nothing new. And yet, Sunny had a feeling that being assigned to lead the team, especially with her on it, was immensely taxing. Once he had left them to be, Sunny figured she should probably give them a little more of a pep talk then that.

"Don't mind him. He's always like that. Focus on yourselves first. If he wants to stay alone and mope, that's his problem." She stood up and checked her stockpile. Dust cartridges of all colors of the rainbow, though running low on electric. Might need to grab a little more of that later. But she knew she was just keeping herself busy for right now. She was damn concerned with the way Noire had been acting of late. For the past two years, he seemed to just sorta move. Without any purpose, or meaning, he just did what was being told. Sunny wasn't even sure if he had a meaning for most of this. But if he wasn't going to talk to her about it, well fine then.

"I'm stocking up on dust. You guys make sure you got what you need for a big kaboom." She walked off towards the Coalition store room. There were quite a few people here that she never got to interact with outside of the Coalition. Mostly because a lot of them seemed like Noire in their piss-poor attitudes. Still, it was nice to have Camellia nearby, even if she was always so sunshine and rainbows. Helped balance things out. She checked a few of the crates. Supplies are always lower than she would like. It's been kind of a pain. She can't just rage around like she's always loved to without a safe supply of dust to keep it going. Hopefully when all is said and done, she could just play her guitar for fun, and not because her life depended on it.

“Mm.”

Bez nodded at Noire’s speech, as well as at Sunny’s counter-speech. Work tomorrow, so relax tonight. That was basically the gist of it, wasn’t it? The Lizard Fauna gazed off into nothing for a moment, before gradually lowering himself down from the crate he had sat on. His tail smacked into the empty box as he turned toward the sigh, and the container slid a good couple feet before bouncing against the wall. Bez’s head tilted in its direction, but it didn’t look damaged or noteworthy, so he didn’t do anything else. He’s had enough of boxes, really.

Arse, Cam, Lilac. Team BLAC, supervised by Titania. Must be a pretty big job, if she’s in charge. Definitely not the same as clearing out vagrant Grimm or breaking human kneecaps. He stroked the hardened spikes of his lower jaw, and then left the room without another word to the others. Food first, then more food, followed by some food after that, and he’ll cleanse his palate with some food at the end. Good chance to die tomorrow, after all, so if a Beowulf was going to spill his entrails open, he may as well give it a nasty, half-digested surprise when it did.

Tense as he was, Bez’s cheeks still tightened momentarily into an imperceptible smile as he slunk off into the bright lights of the night, following the scent of broths and bone.

Like always, she was nearly the first to break from the group at the mere mention of R&R, her preparations for upcoming missions always seemingly involve excitedly exploring each post they paused in, treating each and every shanty-town like they were alien worlds with child-like amazement. This time, it seemed Noire would beat her, only just barely. Despite her chomping at the bit, Noire and Sunny's word did seem to sink in... if just barely.

"Kaaaay!"

It was hard to tell just which of them Momo was replying to, only that she replied in that cheerful, sing-sony tone that just about crept into sickeningly sweet at the end. That part was intentional; it let her know that she still had control and the mask had not yet taken over. Her pride would never admit it, but several times over the last few years she had tempted to give in to the warmth and comfort of her role. It would have been fairly easy with her experiences but with each injury from combat, each setback in planning keeping them behind enemy lines, the disappointment each time their supplies ran low and they were forced to ration themselves, each little taste of misery reminded her that a facade of ignorant bliss was not a cure for the poison in her veins.

As she skipped away from the others who remained at the base, Momo allowed her mask to slip just a bit, her smile degrading to a lesser shade of cheerfulness that let her facial muscles relax. As much as she wanted space from the others to regroup her thoughts to reinforce her emotional walls, she knew that her own thoughts were more damaging than the mere judgment of others.

The thought made her laugh, a soft giggle beneath her breath. It was absurd to take the thought seriously after everything that had taken place. How many times had she seen "classically" trained hunters and huntresses balk at her, a girl so ill-trained in personal combat that she relied more on hand-t0-hand martial arts than the cheap dumpster-dove weapon she carried with pride? It was always so satisfying to see them seethe and demand answers for her involvement, but the greatest schadenfreude would always come when they saw her semblance at work.

"Oh? What's this?!" She asked, her internal monologue dissolving away as she stopped by one of the makeshift stalls. Picking up the item in question, haphazardly, her curiosity had fallen upon a simplistic dagger whose main feature was the absurdly large polished gem in the middle. The gem was crystalline dust, she guessed, which provoked the thought on why someone would waste a valuable resource on such a cheap knife.

"Careful!" The stall owner shrieked, confirming her suspicions, "This knife used to belong to a legendary hunter. It's said that a single swipe of this dagger could make any Grimm explode!" Clearly believing her to be a potential sap, the man continued on before she replied, "Looks powerful, but also kinda flimsy! I'm surprised it never exploded in his hands!" The man flinched, not expecting that kind of response but before he could muster up an explanation to cover up those glaring discrepancies in his product, Momo turned and simply tossed the knife over her shoulder as she merrily moved on, relishing the distressed shout as the man was forced to dive and catch the blade before it could hit anything and go off like a grenade.

Lilac sighed to herself, as some of the others left. She couldn't believe she was here, taking part in the operation. I mean, it was two years ago when it happened. Nobody was sure how or why, but Vale got completely cut off. She was lucky enough to get away before whatever happened happened, but some were not. She put her hand on the little moon charm hanging from her neck. It reminded her of two years ago, when she received it as a gift, right before the Vytal Festival. "It's for good luck, you'll definitely win with it." she remembered her teammate and girlfriend, Midnight, say. She missed her. She missed her so much, and the past few months she's been looking for her in naive hope she's alive and somewhere out there.

She snapped back to reality. Thinking about all this wasn't good for her, and she knew that well. She looked at her new teammates, Camellia and Arsenikos. Those were two people she was not expecting to be on a team with. Both were heirs to big families, known all throughout Remnant, similar to the Schnees. Honestly, she was kind of half-expecting those heirs to be spoiled brats, who didn't care about the rest of the world, so to see them in this operation was giving an odd sense of hope for the world. She didn't know why they were here, but just them being here was already a nice surprise.

"Looks like we've got this evening to ourselves, huh?" she finally said, breaking the silence. "You guys feel like grabbing some food maybe?" she asked, not really expecting anyone to take her up on her offer. She was mostly trying to break the awkwardness between them that she's felt all the ride to the Outpost. After all, her life was going to depend on those people soon enough. Might as well try to get friendly with them.

"Hmph."

A small huff escaped one of the larger men of the group. It was odd, not necessarily being here but being there under the current circumstances. All those years of freedom and he lost it all, his family, his comrades, and his liberty. Ironically, it was the Fall, the event in which likely scarred so many others here and took from their lives that freed him. The situation was so bad that once Bruno encountered "civilization" again, rather than try to fight him or arrest him, they extended a hand and asked for some help.

Now he was here...

Looking around, these "runts", an affectionate term or otherwise, take your pick, were his new comrades. All of them were young, many, he surmised, were probably students when it all came crashing down. A couple certainly had the edge to pass for it. A couple others seemed to be what he could only assume were "normal" kids thrown into a crap situation. And then there was one...

Well, she was the only one with an eerie bubbly attitude in the current situation. Perhaps she was as crazy as he was.

Funnily enough, he wasn't just comrade to the runts, but one of their coordinators; a leader, one of two. Considering who the other was, Bruno thought it was quite amusing. He didn't know who she really was, but the woman had enough of a stick up her ass that he could guess Atlesian, probably military too. Perhaps that's why it was so entertaining to antagonize her.

"You runts can do whatever you want, just make sure you're not hungover when it's time to fight," Bruno stated casually as he began to depart from the group. "Maybe ask Miss Officer; She looks great fun at parties."

Laughing gruffly at that, the man continued his stroll away from the others. Maybe he could find a bar somewhere in this run down place.

Part of Camellia had hoped that everyone would stick together, at the least for some bonding. Maybe, just maybe, that they could use this opportunity to build trust in their teammates. Whether they liked it or not, they still needed to rely on one another to make it out of their situation alive.

And yet none of them seemed to see it the same way that she did.

She sighed as well, but said nothing as everyone seemed to be going in their separate directions. When the time came that they needed to all work together as a team, only then would they realize the mistake. For now though, Camellia decided that she should at least bond with one other person while she was here; that person being Lilac and maybe anyone else who wanted to join them.

"I would like to join you." Camellia spoke up to Lilac, smiling sweetly. "So long as you don't mind my company, of course. If no one else would like to join, then I suppose we'd best be on our way."

While she didn't expect it, Camellia did hope someone else would speak up and come along with them.

This all seemed like quite the hopeless dilemma. Albus had hoped that if they wanted to put together two teams of four, along with a leader for each, there would be some plan, some structure, some way of making sure that the members of each team worked together well enough. While he might not have been much help, having his nose and tired blue eyes buried in a pocketbook, but at least he was not the worst of the bunch with him just silently reading with one half of his mind and focusing the other on listening and watching everything around him.

One of them was going to be a piece of work, the male that had stormed off immediately upon arriving. He hoped that he would not be as problematic to work with as the first impression suggested.

Then a female spoke up, saying she wanted to stock up on Dust. Albus checked his own supply, it was quite enough for a good while he was the resident Dust hoarder after all, though he at least did it with good reason since he basically lived and died by his supply of Dust. He still considered going with her, however, decided against it after a little bit of consideration. Such a trivial and seemingly arbitrary thing would likely not spark any meaningful interaction that might help to get to know her better in the slightest. Though he did have to make an effort from not disagreeing with her on the matter of the other male, as he certainly was his problem, at least to a certain degree since he had sadly been elected to work with him.

The next male that spoke up also seemed like a piece of work, not dissimilar to the one that basically dashed off the moment the chance arose. If Albus was correct then this was supposed to be their coordinator. He was never exactly a man of faith, but he did find himself silently praying that both of those men were better in a situation were focus was required than they were in situations that would ordinarily have called for some socialization.

However, it seemed not all hope was lost to what appeared to either be a contagious grumpiness among them or simply bad planning on whoever made the call to throw them into groups in the first place. Since at least one of them seemed to have some idea that it would be beneficial to actually know the people you were supposed to work and fight alongside with and possibly even protect. Especially that last part was always a bit harder to do when you disliked the antics of the person in need of help, and a good few people in the group already seemed to be so focused on wanting their own lonesome that beginning to actually develop any sense of responsibility or care for them was going to be quite the strain.

"If you would have me," Albus spoke up with his soothing, almost soporific, soft voice, "Then I would like to join the two of you as well. It seems like a good excuse to get to know the both of you better and the more I know, the happier I am." He finished, closing the book and pocketing it on the inside of his leather vest before walking up to the two females with a very straight and goal-oriented, almost militaristic stride.

Both were a bit shorter than he was and both shared the common feature of very nice, seemingly well taken care of hair. One of them having a light pink color to theirs and the other a deep purple along with what appeared to be a tail, likely that of a wolf. Delightful, that made a total of two Faunas. Both of them would certainly be considered quite attractive by other males, though he would wait to pass that judgment for a while. A person's exterior, to him, ever only made up about five percent of their possible beauty or ugliness. The other ninety-five percent consisted of both their mind and character, though the former certainly mattered a little more to Albus personally.

"The name is Ripley, Albus. A pleasure to make your acquaintance." He said upon arriving within a to him comfortable proximity of the two females.

"You sure are uptight. That's no way to respond to such an invite."

Arsenikos followed up with the male, Albus Ripley, who spoke with his two assigned teammates, he haven't been doing much before that, simply sitting and lamenting the possibility that his little vacation maybe coming to an end soon. Even though the perpetual upward angle on the corner of his lips made it seem like he'd never lament anything.

As a few of the loner types, as Arsenikos liked to call them left the room one by one, he gave each one passing through the exit a small smile and wave. First the few younger members left first, then the supervisor for another team as well. Runt? The young man chuckles a bit as he caressed the blades of his weapon. I guess I could be one for now. Sheathing the weapons and standing up he gave the older former criminal a smile and wave as he left as well. Arsenikos didn't discriminate, in fact he gets along with Coalition members who's background often took others aback just as well as anyone else. He didn't understand much of the stigma, after all, if they are useful, why not?

"And of course I would love to join, the name is Arsenikos, but feel free to call me Arsen." He took a slight bow at the two who extended the invitation, Lilac and Camellia. Arsenikos didn't know the wolf faunus well, nor the Zuval girl, at least not personally, though it won't be a bad idea to do so. Perhaps they could come in handy.

"It's quite convenient huh? All the difficult ones left on their own." He added cheerfully, referring to the "loner types" that left earlier. "Or perhaps we should be a bit more inclusive? My semblance tells me that it could be interesting." Arsenikos was not the one to use his precognition semblance on trivial things, but the reputation of his ability had always preceded him. It has became a habit, as if the words he say becomes truer simply by attributing it to his semblance.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, this was not what she was expecting. Literally all of the remaining people took her up on her offer. Perhaps she could make some friends here yet, she thought. Though she quickly chastised herself for that thought, knowing well that they might just be nice out of some necessity, not out of their own niceness. This wasn't exactly a nice and pleasant setting where everyone was nice just 'cause. And she learned not to trust everyone easily the harsh way, way back as a child.
"Lilac Luna. Nice to meet you all." Lilac said with a slight smile to the others, remembering she hadn't even introduced herself. "And that really depends, Arsen. Which sort of "interesting" would you be referring to, just out of curiosity? The one where we get them to open up a bit to us, I'd hope." she added, knowing to cut trouble's buds before they bloom. She wasn't ready to pin Arsen as a troublemaker just yet, knowing not to judge prematurely, but what he said rubbed her the wrong way, so to speak. "Otherwise, I think the four of us will do just fine in each other's company."
At last she had finished prepping. Everyone was likely off doing something with everyone else, and usually she'd want to join in. But for one reason or another she always felt compelled to spend some time alone, playing her guitar and writing songs. She wasn't very good at writing them, but that didn't stop her from trying. So once everyone had cleared out, she retreated to her own living space, grabbed boomstick, ejected any dust in the chamber, and sat down in a lax position, tuning the guitar to the proper key. She wondered what to sing about. And just sorta strummed her guitar. The sound that came out was rather calm, compared to her usual fair, but it sounded nice. The, she just started saying some words, hoping it came out mildly pleasant.
...So it's time to rise
When you trip and Fall
Behind the veil
and hear it's call
Will I see you there,
or lose it all?
Well they say beware
But I don't care!
Well I say screw fate
It haunts that date
As I'm climbing up the walls
Though I may be late
and it can't wait
Just tell me this ain't all...
But your seat's is still empty
and the your bed's still made
To give up is tempting
'Cause I know I've been played...
As she kept going, she started getting more into it, getting a little louder and picking up the pace. It wasn't as hard as she ususally played, but it had a nice pulse that keeped it going. She remembered what she had said about Noire. What she really meant by that was that you can't help someone else, unless you can help yourself. She wanted to find him and talk to him, but she was feeling as if something was off. Right now, Sunny was focusing on what brought her joy in a world that had crumbled around them. They might not make it back tomorrow, and as much as she loved to make things crash and burn, she wanted to make something every now and then.
She wasn't aware if anyone was able to hear her, but she never really cared. At this point, most people were likely used to her musical rambling as it was a frequent occurrence. As far as she was aware though, no one had joined in since she joined the Coalition. Perhaps this time to play was her act of defiance. A giant middle finger to whatever caused the Fall. Since she couldn't remember fighting it, she'd keep playing and surviving. Once she finished playing she stood up, feeling better she wanted to find and talk with Noire. He liked to take walks, and Sunny knew a few places he hit up.
It took a fair while of searching, but eventually she found him. "You certainly haven't changed much." She came up beside him. "You've got two options: either talk to me now, or I kick you in the balls and you tell me after."
His reaction was immediate, hand lashing out like a viper as he clasped his hand over Sunny's mouth to silence her. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, his other hand raising a single finger to his lips. This was the usual. Sunny was being loud... Or rather, Sunny was running her mouth at the most inopportune time. As usual. He narrowed his eyes as he shushed her, making it clear that he really, really needed her to shut up.
He had been walking around throughout the Upper Residential District, mostly just snooping around. Obviously not all establishments had been re-opened, so some twisted sense of paranoia was causing him to investigate. There was some part of him that was trying to find the 'wrong' and the 'truth' of the situation they were all in. Because trusting people wasn't allowed.
He leaned around the corner of the building he had stopped at when Sunny caught him, remaining out of sight as he returned to focusing. Around the corner, down an alley, was a truck. A standard fare cargo shipment and there were two people loading the contents into a small storage unit, presumably inside of the building. The abandoned building.
'I'm telling you it was just the wind.'
'No way, I definitely heard something.'
'The only people here are Coalition -- ease up. Look, we do and we're free. You know the deal.'
'Yeah, but we really gonna trust the Coalition, though?'
'We really got a choice?'
'Eh, you're right, I guess. Man, I hate this stuff. Makes me feel weird.'
'That's cuz you ain't got no aura, dumbass.'
'Hey, who you callin' a dumbass, asshole?'
'You.'
Noire wrinkled his nose at the back and forth as the two women continued their back and forth, all while loading the unmarked containers within the storage. Looking back at Sunny, he jerked his chin back towards the way she had came from as he began to walk. Pulling out his scroll, he marked the building on the map within it -- he'd return later and peek inside.
"I'm glad to see you haven't changed, Sunny. I always valued your consistency as a person." Noire spoke as he kept walking, eyes on his scroll as he looked over the various locations of interest on his scroll. He was going to have a lot of ground to cover. "How've you been? Hope the wife and kids are doing well." His words came out idly, as if he was half-speaking to Sunny and half-speaking to the air. He could gauge what her reaction would be -- already preparing himself. Because despite two years having passed, it seemed like no one had truly 'changed'.
As he continued to walk, he glanced up from his scroll -- the street they were walking down leading them on a clear path with Momo.
Ugh, what a bad day. This was supposed to be her, "Get Ass Backwards Drunk" Day. Instead? It was this bullshit. Once again, she was being corralled up with that... Criminal scum, Bruno. Worse yet? Goddamn children. Fuck. What had she done in a past life to deserve this? She was the last off the transport ship, trailing back behind everyone else as she watched some of them splinter off.
Gods, she hoped a building spontaneously collapsed on top of him and killed him. Fucking criminal scum.
"Hey, hey. Stop standing around you fucking assholes. Come on." Titania was snapping her fingers as she spoke, walking right through the group. Her voice was mildly modulated, scrambling it ever so slightly as she spoke. Snapping her fingers again, she resorted to treating them like dogs. Snap fingers, keep their attention then lead the puppies around. How dreadful. She was walking with purpose -- going after Bruno because that piece of shit thought he was going to be allowed to slink off on his own like some moody, "I'm too hashtag damaged to have friends.", piece of shit child.
Absolutely fuckin' not.
Not on her watch, at least.
"Hey. You." Titania clapped her hands together to get Bruno's attention, immediately crooking a finger back towards her as she signaled him to come back. God, she hoped he didn't obey. Because then she'd have an actual reason to break his goddamn knees. But with everyone's attention gained, at the very least, she turn on her heel and made her way down a different street, making a beeline for a bar she was all too acquainted with.
With what limited time she had to her freedom, Momo had mercilessly blazed through the boring to-do list of restocking her dust and ammo supplies. What she couldn't put into the myriad of pockets hidden beneath her baggy hoodie was kept in a metal ammo can she held in one hand. Her weapon needs having been met she had moved on to more biological needs as she would be found at a food stall.
"So you're saying that your kebab is worth twice the amount here than anywhere else? Is it that good?" Her sing-songy once more just dipped into sickening sweet with that last syllable, twisting in the dagger that was the subvert message that the stall owner was trying to rip her off. The stall owner's face was beginning to shift as he was starting to get the idea of what was coming. Usually, the owner never bothered messing with his prices when it came to anyone carrying a weapon (for obvious reasons), but there had been something to the girl that just said, 'easy target'. Unfortunately, this had been intentional on her part and he, like countless others, had fallen for it.
"Uhh... yeah. Yeah! It's definitely worth the price!" It took a second for the scale to tip from the strangeness of the situation back to potential profits. His confidence rebuilt, he continued, "The best you'll ever have, I guarantee it!" By the time the words escaped his lips, he noticed her head was tilting to the side, ever-so-slightly, like a confused puppy. "You must be reaalllly sure about that, Mister! I've been to lotta places, but I've never had someone boast a money-back guarantee." The trap was sprung and the light in the man's eyes dimmed just a bit as he realized this. Times were rough for most people and getting good and fresh ingredients sometimes just didn't happen. Knowing that any hit to his reputation might make his business suffer, he knew what he had to do.
"Y-yeah... right. You know what, kid? I'm so confident in it I'll... I'll let you have one for free."
"Oh that won't do, Mister!" She replied, "I want to buy five at full price! After all, we all have to do our parts, even us hunters!" That same, sickening sweet tone twisted the knife even further as his confusion was clearly apparent. The poor man was clueless about what game he had lost for its rules were as convoluted and contrived depending on the whims of Momo's sadism. In the end, his dejection would soon fade away with the sudden influx of lien and she stepped away with 5 sorta tasty kebabs; they would definitely need some sort of sauce to elevate them to just tasty, though.
Whatever joy Momo had derived from that exchange, however, would be lost as she saw two of her teammates on the same road. The corners of her mouth rose just a hair as her mask tightened back down, "Heeeeey!!" She called out around a mouthful of skewered meat, waving her kebab-wielding hand frantically despite her true intentions.
As Bruno made his way off, none of the "runts" as he so dubbed them made an effort to speak or call out to him. He began to glance around, examining the surroundings. The place damn near looked like a black market with all the apparent peddlers around. The bandit wasn't looking to get scammed, or having to put someone through a wall for doing so. He just wanted to get some alcohol, maybe some food and sleep. There sure as hell wasn't a good fight waiting for him here.
However, suddenly a familiarly-irritated voice addressed him from behind following a stern clap. Turning around with a raised brow, it was none other than their dear leader. Or rather, he supposed she was his partner now. His comrade. It was incredibly amusing for the felon; the fact that this poor woman, who could very well have been some diligent Atlesian soldier that worked her way up into a position befitting of command to be placed as an equal with him, a mere criminal. It was almost hard to tell, given how she seemed to hate everything, but he was sure there was a special place in her heart that wished death on him particularly.
"Aw, I didn't know you valued my company so much Sunshine," Bruno chimed as he turned back to approach and follow after her. Booze was fine but irritating the poor woman was probably the most fun he could get into stuck here. "I could've sworn you didn't like me."
Sunny was about to be mad, until she heard the voices speaking from over on the other other side. What the hell was happening? When he let go and started walking off, he made light of the situation, not only circumventing her question, but the situation they had just encountered. "The hell do you think you're going on about? You're just going to ignore that shit? Like nothing ever happened? And also you ignored my question!"
She wasn't prepared to leave without anything from him, but it seemed the universe had other things planned, as they had just stumbled upon Momo. She looked back at Noire and aggressively pointed her finger at him
"You're not free from this yet." Hey turned to face her teammate. Before waving back at her.
"Hey Momo, is this one for me?
Thanks." Sunny didn't even wait for a reply before she reached out for the steal.
The violet hair girl, Lilac, was the first to jump and respond, her voice was friendly but with a hint of passive aggression. Arsenikos didn't mind, he was too used to people speaking like that to him already. Lilac's comment about opening-up felt a bit ironic when the formerly silent team leader, Titania barked towards the group harshly.
"Ah, perhaps that is the "opening-up" you were looking for?" Arsen let out his usual light chuckle as he spoke to Lilac, while glancing at the silver-haired woman's not very passive aggression. He judged the sorry state of leadership in the organization for a while, that sentiment only intensified as Titania began barking at the other team's supervisor as well. "You gotta wonder, who put them in charge?" It was half speaking to himself and half addressing his unsatisfactory to his younger colleagues.
When Titania did a heel face turn and left, Arsen's perpetual smile dimmed a bit for a moment. That attitude sure was something, and certainly not fit for someone dubbed as a leader. A bit of Arsen felt like that the Coalition simply chooses the strongest members to lead, simply and efficient. But it is more than common for someone who is powerful to be an, for a lack of a better word, inconsiderate and selfish asshole.
"...Hmph." Arsen stood and watch his two supervisors leave, a bit lost in thought as he quietly caressed the hilt of his rapiers, blue eyes gazing into the night streets. "...What a handful." He threw down the words to his colleagues before following suit. "I'll go make sure they don't kill each other before tomorrow."
The wolf faunus wasn't sure how to feel about the scene that unfolded before her. She was quite content with going to grab something to eat with her teammates, but Titania had to go and do her thing. And in such a way... snapping like they were dogs... as a faunus, she felt kind of half-insulted with this, deep down. She was speechless for a long moment, in which Arsen decided to follow Titania and Bruno. That sort of snapped her out of the shock of learning that's the sort of person she's working under now.
"Should we... Should we go and see if they're all gonna be alright too?" she finally asked Albus and Camellia. "Or are we gonna ignore them and hope they don't claw each other's eyes out?"
She looked towards her teammates, with visible concern on her face. She did not like how things were starting off at all.
Albus didn't quite know how to respond to the other guy. He thought his approach was quite normal and not exactly "Uptight" as he had put it. However, it wasn't exactly rare that other people thought of him as much more formal than need be, but he had been raised in a rather militaristic way and this was how he behaved, it wasn't exactly something he could help just like that. Before he got the chance to formulate a response the other guy, as well as the two team leaders, were barreling off to the nearest bar.
Albus could only shake his head at what he was witnessing. When he had enrolled at Atlas Academy he had been under the impression that the team he was put in was an utter mess and would certainly go nowhere, while he had been wrong in that assumption back then, this was far worse than the chaos he had seen back in those days and at least the solution at those times weren't mindless slurs and alcohol as they appeared to be now. He would have to have a word with whoever was under the impression that the teams they had assigned were going to be effective. Maybe a lesson on team building and efficiency would finally open that person's clearly rather clouded eyes.
"I would rather not," Albus sighed, "As much as I find it baffling and hard to believe they are all adults, I doubt that they will kill each other. Although, when alcohol is involved you never know. Let us just pray that they will not cripple each other while they are in there. Besides, I do not drink anyways, it only needlessly clouds the mind and is in no way beneficial."
He turned back toward the two women and with a deep breath dropped his shoulders and general frame a little bit so he wouldn't look like a soldier standing at attention, although his back was still straight - He had always found it to be much more comfortable and aside from the matter of comfort it was factually less damaging to one's spine to keep a straight back - a lot of the tension was gone from out of his body. He himself could barely believe how dysfunctional humans could be, especially those that volunteered to help rebuild a city. One would think that those would be more righteous and optimistic individuals, however, this only seemed to apply to a minority of them. This disbelief was quite exhausting to him, so he did his best effort to not have it occupy his mind any more than absolutely necessary.
"If you two really wish that we keep an eye on them, then I will not follow suit with some of the others that we have seen here and just leave on my own. However, I would much rather be somewhere else than around them. They seem to be preoccupied with their own issues and squabbling."
"Hey!" Momo cried out as she was relieved of one of her kebabs, her cheeks puffing out as she pouted, but it was short-lived sulk as she quickly chomped down on the remaining ones she had. Truthfully, she had over-ordered for such an occasion, for if Sunny hadn't, someone else would have. Not that she would let them know, as she always did this little song and dance every time it occurred. Halfway through her third kebab, the sensation of getting full was quickly approaching, prompting her to distract herself.
"Soo...~" She began her smile creeping up an extra notch with her mischievous question, "What were you two doing together, all alone? Hmm?~" Momo didn't particularly care about relationships, but it was always beneficial to gain as much information she could use against them.
