As the rain continued to fall onto the freshly cut grass, Amy Harold's family and friends emerged from the church as one body. The flowers were frail, drooping their usual morning dew, as if they were hanging their heads in sorrow and shedding a tear of their own. The silence was broken as those who knew her were unable to stop weeping noisily, and those who were overcome with their grief had decided to return to the homes to resume their tearful sessions in private. The rest of her friends headed over towards a small building on the opposite side of the church where they had intended to celebrate Amy's life at the wake.

Murder. That was what the police had stated. All that was known was that she had been found in her own bed in the morning with bruises all over her body and several of her bones seriously fractured and broken. It was unknown whether it had been intended for her to die or if it had been an argument gone too far - an attempted robbery which had ended horribly wrong or a crime of passion - a single person or a group effort. The media had given numerous different accounts as to who could have been responsible, with most of them implicating Amy's boyfriend Michael as the killer.

By the sheer number of people who had been in attendance - near to two hundred - it was evident that Amy had been a very popular girl during her brief life. As her friends spilled into the building, one of them quickly put on some upbeat music and several of them had begun opening cans of beers that had been put out on the table in wait. Everyone toasted to Amy, before disappearing in their own directions with their friends.

Tears ran down her cheek as the service was held, trying her best to keep her composure. Kimberly never longed for this to happen, no one would. She regretted the time she had that she never spent on Amy, even a second that she could spare. The precious moments they spent together were the only things that wouldn't be gone. She would cherish them until the end of time.

The downpour that engulfed the church wasn't helping either, with the everlasting gloominess that surrounded them. Flowers that were scattered around the building were drooping in their own sadness.

. . .

Kimberly was still in tears when she exited the building. She needed to stop crying, for the sake of her best friend. The thought of Amy overwhelmed her, she had to move on one day.

She made her way to a small building that most of Amy's friends were going to, keeping her head down so that no one would be able to catch a glimpse of her tear-stained face. Kimberly covered her face with the sleeves of her black ruffled blouse for extra measure.

When everyone toasted to Amy, Kimberly didn't lay a finger on the alcohol. She disliked the bitter taste of alcohol more than anything in the world. She always wondered why anyone would ever enjoy it.

. . .

Sprinting, Kimberly proceeded to a nearby bus station that was located three blocks from the small building. She sat cross-legged on one of the benches, an obvious look of sorrow on her face.

As Finn exited the church, he wasn't ashamed to admit that he had shed tears for his deceased friend. He saw Amy's parents pass him, grief-stricken, as they entered into the back seat of a black vehicle and said nothing to one another. The vehicle, driven by a chauffeur, slowly pulled away from the church and onto the main road. He smiled softly, before walking down the road until he reached the spot where everyone seemed to be crossing. He looked across the road, silent for a few moments.

"What's all this about?" he eventually asked, turning to Ben, one of his classmates who he had never really spent much time with before and, as far as he could recall, had never even spoken to Amy for longer than thirty seconds.

"It's the party," Ben said, as he removed his phone from his pocket. "We're all going in to grab a beer or something, and celebrate."

"Celebrate?" Finn repeated, sickened by Ben's choice of words. The boy excused himself as he crossed the road towards the building. He knew that he hadn't literally meant to celebrate the fact that she was dead, but the idea that people would be in there drinking and smoking disgusted him. That wasn't how Amy was supposed to be remembered - as the after-party. She deserved to be remembered as the beautiful girl that she was, but that was unlikely now. He decided to go home, slowly dragging himself along the road through the rain until he reached the bus stop a few blocks away. There, he saw Kimberly sitting cross-legged on a bench, her face filled with sorrow. He was pleased to see someone who was respectful enough to stay away from that poor excuse of a wake, and relieved that it was Kimberly.

"Hey," he said, moving under the shelter and sitting on the bench a couple of feet apart from her. He was going to ask her if she was alright, but he knew better. If someone had asked him that, he might have flipped. Of course she wasn't alright. She just had to bury her best friend. "Do you want to come to mine? I wanted to remember Amy properly, not like that."

Michael came out of the church slowly. He felt dizzy and queasy, he'd not slept for a few days and was dehydrated from his weeping. He'd managed to keep his composure during the funeral. He needed to focus on getting home safely, if he started looking to the past or the future he would break down crying again. But every once in a while he would start thinking about her and he would feel the tears welling up, he pushed the memories to the back of his head and continued on his way home, he would not allow himself to cry in the street. He had his dignity and he would maintain it. Looking back he felt he should have started sobbing uncontrollably, afterall, he was the prime suspect and his trial would be by media. But he didn't want to put on a show for them, he had nothing to do with her death, and the only investigation into him that mattered was from the police. He had nothing to hide, he told himself, you've done nothing wrong, nothing at all, it's all lies. This mantra was repeated in his head, killing his thoughts and emotions, he needed to be dead or else he wouldn't function.

Rounding the corner of the street that had the bus stop he wanted he saw 2 other funeral goers that he recognized the faces of, he didn't know their names, a new emotion joined his sorrow and anger, fear. Were their others around that would want nothing more than hang him from a lamppost for what he's supposed to have done. He took a deep breath. "To hell with it." He said aloud and walked toward the bus stop, stiff from his nerves as he went. If they did kill him at least this misery would be over for him.

He sat down next to Kimberly, staring down the road in the direction the bus would be coming. He tried his best not to shake but he was. More to be ashamed of.

Kimberly bit her lip as she caught sight of Finn approaching her. She rarely saw him at all, the only few times were meet-ups together with Amy, however they didn't converse that much. Finn wasn't one of her fondest friends, they were just acquaintances, but she respected him.

Finn took a seat on a nearby bench. Kimberly was grateful that he was aware of her personal space and kept his distance. Her gaze shifted to him when he spoke up. He mentioned something about going to his house and having their own private service. Although the invitation was tempting, she didn't have the energy to attend it. She wanted to curl up in bed, sobbing away the whole day.

Amy. What about her? Wouldn't she be upset that Kimberly didn't attend Finn's service? Kimberly thought about it for a while before replying to Finn's offer.

"That's understandable, Amy needs to be remembered decently." Kimberly responded, giving the slightest of smiles. "Lead the way."

Right after she had spoken, she spotted a person walking their way. Michael, Amy's boyfriend. Kimberly knew he had suffered the most. The person whom he loved passed on, that was already difficult to handle. With the police suspecting that he was the murderer? That was added pressure. Kimberly knew Michael well. How Amy talked about him with her, the way she described him.

Michael sat on the same bench that Kimberly sat on, the bench wasn't the biggest bench, nor was it the smallest. Kimberly scooted a bit to the side, trying to act casual.

Michael felt the tension in his body building up, trying to resist shaking, if he let himself shake he may let himself sob loudly and disgustingly, perhaps even scream. He pushed himself along the bench so he was right into the corner of the shelter, as far away as physically possible from Kimberly and Finn. He could feel their gazes burning into him, furthering the weight of the accusations made against him.
He would have no part of a wake, alcohol and grief, the anger associated with both and an acceptable target, him, would lead to one thing, he was better off remaining as far as physically and emotionally possible from the wake and those involved in them.
The way he was sat was extremely awkward in how withdrawn it was, he was leaning very far forward, his chest was almost touching his knees, his feet were touching the floor with his calf muscles as tense as he could make them. He was breathing heavily, raggedly, for him, it was one of three things he could hear, the other two being his heart beating heart and fast, painfully so, it felt like it would tear itself apart from the force of it's beats and the last were his racing, frantic thoughts, he wanted to be anywhere but here, anywhere at all.
"Where is it?!" He whispered to himself. "Please, just come, take me away from here... Please." He continued to whisper.

Kaskel's eyes never left the casket and while many were crying, Kasy's heart was so broken that tears seemed to have disappeared. Today was Amy's funeral and Kaskel had noticed some of Amy's friends but talking to them wasn't going to help anything. Wasn't going to bring her baby sister back to her. Kaskel could remember the events so clearly that night; she'd come home from her college classes to pick Amy up so they could go shopping. When the dark figure had ran out of the house Kasy had considered chasing whoever it was but the culprit was really fast. The first thought that had came to Kasy's mind was Amy. When Kaskel got to Amy's room... her world had fallen apart.

Was she supposed to live with this? The pain and reminder that she would never be able to see her sister again? Ever since Jessica had disappeared, Amy was all Kaskel had ever had. Their parents didn't know about half the things that happened in their children's lives and Kaskel would bet they didn't even know what she was studying. Amy... she had died alone and in pain. Kaskel hadn't made it in time and just thinking about it set a huge burden of grief and regret in her heart.

A warm slick liquid slipped down Kasy's cheek just as the funeral ended. The tears had finally found their way to her eyes and Kasy had almost forgotten she had her sunglasses on. Thankfully no one was paying attention to her and when everyone stood up to leave, Kaskel turned around and made her way to the parking lot where she had parked her black mustang GT; a present from one of the men that had been infatuated with Kaskel. A car that Kas had promise she'd give to Amy.

Kasy reached into her pocket and took out her keys, her hands were shaky and Kaskel hadn't noticed the tears that were starting to fall down. The keys slipped from her shaky grasp but all Kasy could think about was Amy. Taking her time, Kaskel bent down and grabbed the keys but stayed there for a second. This wasn't the first time she'd lost someone important but what angered Kaskel was that this incident was caused by someone else. Someone had dared to take Amy's life away from Kasy just like someone had dared to take away Jessica. In frustration Kaskel let out a little sob and slammed her fist against her car door before standing up and climbing into the car. She didn't start it when the door closed and instead took her sunglasses off as her emotions started to mix together. Kaskel couldn't hold it in any longer and let herself cry.

Finn smiled as Kimberly agreed to come with him. Just as he stood up to begin the fifteen minute walk back to his house, he spotted Michael walking through the rain and taking a seat next to her. If it hadn't been for the newspapers labelling him as the most likely suspect in the last few weeks, Finn might still have recognised him from the few parties he had bumped into him at, or the Facebook photos that Amy had uploaded one after the other. He thought for a second about the accusations the media had made, although he himself had always been unsure about how accurately the media portrayed him. At the moment, he was leaning forwards, breathing heavily and muttering inaudible words under his breath. His peculiar actions suggested someone who was paranoid or guilty - but before casting him off as a strange person, Finn decided to give him a chance. He might have just been completely devastated, as he and Kimberly were.

"Michael, right?" he asked politely, straightening up his wet suit jacket. "I'm Finn, Amy's friend. I don't know if you remember me or not, but..."

He paused, as if he had already deeply regretted talking to him. There was something about him - he seemed to be a very awkward person, everything from the position he was seated in to the way he was breathing so heavily. He could almost hear the man's heart beat racing in his chest. Whether or not Michael had murdered his closest friend didn't matter right now. Until he was found guilty, Finn knew it was cruelly unfair to judge him so harshly.

"I wanted to have a small gathering at my house," he continued, placing his hands in his trouser pockets. "You know, to remember Amy. You were her boyfriend, after all. You're welcome to come with us if you'd like that."

Continuing to sit down, head turned away from Finn and Kimberly, his position barely shifting. After what felt like an agonizing eternity a noise was heard, speech. Michael flinched away from the noise, it made him jump as it had broken his concentration, his nausea raised to a level he didn't know existed and his heart rate soon followed. He turned his pale head to face the source of the noise, it felt like he was moving as though he were in a dream, like moving through a liquid.
It was somebody he thought he knew, what was his name? Ian? No, but is was something ending with an 'N'. But what was it? He met him at a party with Amy, right? Or did he go to the same school as him but was a few years below him? He couldn't remember. That was no concern now, anyway. He had said something but Michael hadn't caught it.
"..." Michael said nothing an stared at him with wide eyes and a mouth slightly held open. His eyes narrowed a bit and he finally spoke up with a quiet question, drenched in Adrenaline.
"...What?"
He introduced himself as 'Finn' and as Amy's friend and asked if Michael remembered him. Michael shook his head and said evasively.
"No, I don't remember you..."
Michael's eyes began to dart back up the road, looking for the bus, hoping it would round the corner and take him away from the dire situation he was in. But Finn told him something else and Michael's stomach dropped accordingly. It was an invitation to his house to attend a small, quiet wake, Michael's head swam as he felt the words hit him. He felt light headed. "I don't... think... I should." Michael managed to say slowly, short of breath. He had visibly gone several shades paler as his heart rate sped up even further.

She kept silent when Finn began speaking with Michael, not wanting to interrupt. It seemed as if though Michael had forgotten about him, resulting in Finn introducing himself all over again.

Finn then explained about the little gathering they were having, asking Michael to come along. Michael seemed hesitant, he avoided eye contact a bit before replying to Finn's request. Kimberly had never seen Michael so, differently. She remembered he acted quite differently before Amy passed on.

Kimberly noticed that Michael was in obvious discomfort. She couldn't just ignore the fact, so with as much confidence as she could muster, she questioned him.

"You don't look so good, are you feeling alright?" she said, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. She chose her words carefully, she didn't want him to take her words another way.

[fieldbox="The Tutor, teal, dashed, 10, Times New Roman"]'Pathetic Fallacy.' He smirked and held out an open hand to the rain that pattered down around them. 'And they think it only happens in fiction.' A small puddle formed in his palm before Merrick slowly turned his hand and let the water fall to the ground. People poured out from the church around him, mostly silent with only passing glances. The color black was rampant among the mourners, donning the man himself. The entire event could be something seen in one of his "novels", crumbled papers tossed in a garbage can. It was too cliche to be real life.

But it was.

Amy had been a wonderful girl, someone he surprisingly got close with during his transition into what was ultimately another culture. She had been having quite a bit of trouble with her studies, and Merrick took her along as one of his "students" after the administrator of the school referred her to him. There had only been a semester of studies and Merrick had watched Amy's grades improve tremendously. It only made sense that she would probably be able to pass on her own during the next portion of the school year, and he was confident that she would do just fine without him. Although he had been preparing himself for his departure, Merrick never would have dreamed that it would have ended like this. Students leave his sessions and move on. Sometimes it was tough, seeing as he became a friend to most of them, but it was never unexpected and tragic.

His dark eyes gazed out into the dissipating crowd. Lost in his thoughts, the man had remained standing in the rain and in the way, but that was no matter. With an exasperated sigh, Merrick made his way to the beat-up car parked along the edge of the lot. The familiar sound of keys falling to the pavement grabbed his attention as he stopped and looked toward the noise. From a small distance, it was clear that the woman was distraught, her level of grief exponentially greater than many of the others here. A relative?

"Hey!" Merrick slowly walked toward her, reaching out his hand to gently touch her on the shoulder before she got into the vehicle. He cleared his throat and went to tap on this window before something stopped him. A ghost? Through the tinted windows, it was almost as if he was seeing Amy again. He had to remind himself to breathe again before finally tapping on the window. He was crazy, there were no such things as phantoms. "Ma'am? Are you going to be alright?" he asked through the glass.

Finn nodded his head slightly when Michael stated that he couldn't remember him. He felt partially insulted, but he didn't hold it against him since he knew that he hadn't quite made a lasting impression when they had met. If he had been Amy's friend rather than her boyfriend, and she hadn't have died, he would most likely be unable to recognise Michael either. He offered him a soft smile when he said that he didn't want to come, and watched as Kimberly politely asked if he was alright. He was going to intervene and say of course he wasn't, but Finn decided to say nothing, instead stepping out of the shelter and back into the rain.

"I understand," he said, his smile fading away as the rain tickled his face and neck. "Maybe I'll see you around - under better circumstances, I hope."

Luckily, the rain was dying down a little. It seemed like one of those old films where the main character's friend or relative dies and they stand there, looking down at the grave while the rain drenched them. Except he was looking down at a devastated man who had lost the thing that meant the most to him. Rain, at a funeral. Almost a cliché, it seemed, and most definitely a trope he could apply to real life. Pocketing his hands, he slowly began to lean against the glass window and glanced over to Kimberly, his saddened expression showing his sympathy for Amy's boyfriend.

Kaskel gasped when she heard a tap on her window, through the rain she seen a man with short brown hair, blue eyes that held a sadness in them. Ah, he must know Amy. Kasy almost rolled her eyes at herself; of course he knew Amy, why else would he be here? She'd never met him before but it was still rude to ignore the man, right? Kasy rolled her window down after dabbing away her tears with the long sleeve of the black dress she'd worn today.

"Uh, yes *hiccup*... no... hm *hiccup*... maybe. Kaskel Harold, Amy's sister," Kasy cleared her throat and ignored the hiccup or that followed with her sentence. Who didn't hiccup when they talked while crying? Kaskel sure hoped she wasn't the only one.

Wait, wasn't it rude to just sit in the care while he was standing in the rain? Especially when he was standing there to check on her. Guess she wasn't all the invisible to the others who were grieving.

Kasy reached into the back of her car and took out her umbrella before climbing out of the car, closing the door and opening the umbrella; which was big enough for the two of them to stand under.

"Sorry... for making you worried. Do you want a towel? I have one in the trunk," She offered, still curious as to who the man was and how he'd known her sister.

Michael locked his eyes with Kimberly, the misery was obvious in them. "I'm just..." He stammered out. "I just miss her... And I'm scared." He said with a shrug, the tears finally welling up in his eyes. "She didn't what happened to her... She didn't... ." He said looking over to Finn. "You know what they say about me, but I didn't do it. I didn't... I'm not a killer. I'm not!"

He looked down at the floor again, blinked repeatedly and then wiped his eyes on his sleeves. "I'm sorry, Amy..." He muttered.

"Of course you miss her, you shouldn't be scared when you know that you've done nothing wrong," Kimberly reassured, pursing her lips. "Both of us know that, right, Finn?" Her eyes flickered towards Finn's, checking for his approval.

Kimberly's face had a guilty expression when Michael apologized to Amy, sincerely. Why did the police always suspect the lover first? Why not somebody else? It was one of does movie clichés again, and she absolutely despised them. Amy would be utterly frustrated currently if she saw what had happened.

She gently put her hand out Michael's shoulder, "You don't have to be, Amy loved you, and you loved her. I'm sure she misses you dearly as well." Kimberly couldn't tell Michael that everything was going to be alright, he wasn't a fool, but she meant it when she spoke about Amy.

She really did.

Finn appeared a little startled by Michael's show of emotion, but he seemed surprisingly genuine. When Kimberly spoke and glanced towards him, he nodded his head and leaned forwards a little bit.

"Yeah, of course," he agreed with her, his fingers fidgeting in his pocket with a slight sense of doubt. "If you did it, you wouldn't be here now, would you? You loved her."

Finn was again surprised by how much he believed his own words there for a second. Until today, he had always suspected that Michael was responsible - the way the police had described him. But, he knew deep down that the person in front of him wasn't the same person that the media portrayed him as. Yet he wasn't the same person as the happy, smiling lad who occasionally appeared in various pictures on Amy's social media pages either. He couldn't help but to sympathise for Michael.

When Kimberly had stopped talking, he paused for a moment. "Look, the offer still stands if you want to come with us. It's got to be better than being stuck here in the rain waiting for half an hour."

Michael held his head down and pinched the bridge of his nose with his left thumb and forefinger, he was ashamed of the tears he had shown to Finn and Kimberley.
He tensed a little bit at Kimberley's hand touching his shoulder in a sympathetic manner, but he relaxed after a second or so. Nodding at their words, he didn't really believe them, but he wanted to, he wanted someone in his corner, there to support him through this hell.
He eventually looked up and nodded. "...Yeah." He said barely louder than a whisper. "I'd like to... come to Amy's wake."
Even if they did believe he was the killer, the kindness they showed him took the edge off of his misery.

Finn nodded at Michael's words, moving towards him and placing a hand on his shoulder as some sort of sign of comfort. Then, when he was sure that Michael was alright, he stood up and headed out into the rain.

"Come with me then," he said, tilting his head up to face the sky, allowing the raindrops to splash against his face. He then slowly began to walk away from the bus stop, slow enough for them to catch up with him without the need to run or jog.
