COMBAT TEST THREAD

Welcome! In addition to the Iwaku rules, please follow these of my own:
No discussing real world hot-topic issues, such as politics, religion, or other things that may cause arguments.
Do please respect your other players, and my role as GM.
Don't be afraid to chat or ask questions! I love it!

Please at least one paragraph per post, do your best to keep the scene moving.
Please do your best with punctuation and grammar!
There is no posting order, and you are allowed to post to keep conversations moving, but please be courteous and limit yourself if it is only you and someone else.

Please do not post characters in this thread.
You may have up to 3 characters active in a single tournament. Other characters not in the tournament may still interact in the resort

(Many of the rules about rolling will only be used by me. However, die rolls and effects will be listed out in the post, so if I make a mistake you might catch it and correct me)

Combat is done in a turn-based format. Each player types out one post which details the response to the last round, as well as the character's actions for the current round. You may not control your opponent's character in any way, unless permission is given. You may also not emote any attacks landing, as the occurrences of each combat round is determined by dice, and will be emoted in the GM post.

In combat, each round a character may choose an action:
ALL-OUT ATTACK - 2 Attack dice
BALANCED - 1 Attack die 1 Defense die
TOTAL DEFENSE - 2 Defense Dice (This action may only be used twice in a row)
Or they may activate one of their special abilities.

(Defensive abilities that are not agressed upon will not activate cooldown)

Even Rolls (2,4,6,8,10) are successes, odd rolls (3,5,7,9,11) all fail.
1's are Critical Fails, 12's are Critical Success

1 Attack deals 1 health
1 Defense protects 1 health
Crit Attack deals 2 health
1 Attack and 1 Defense cancel out
Critfail Attack causes 1 health to attacker
Defense makes Crit Attack deal 1 health
Crit Defense cancels Crit Attack
Crit Defense deals counter vs normal attack
Critfail Defense allows a counter vs Successful Defense
Critfail Defense makes a successful attack a Crit

HEALTH CONDITIONS
Healthy -> Slightly Wounded -> Wounded -> Heavily Wounded -> Near Defeat -> Defeated
9hp -> 8/7hp -> 6/5hp -> 4/3hp -> 2/1hp -> 0hp (Dead)

WINS AND PROGRESSION
In general, the characters will 'level' in a balanced manner. The farther a character gets in a tournament, the more of their gear they can make look 'fancy' with no real gameplay difference. The winning character(s) of a tournament will get something new and fancy (still with no mechanical benefit), possibly progress towards 'win-locked goals' and must sit out for the next tournament. Other characters will also gain new gear for participation if they haven't won in a while
LOSSES - In most cases, battle losses will have no consequences beyond being out of the tournament. However, if decided upon by the players in one match, the loser may have to give up one item, may become inactive for a number of tournaments, or even be killed outright

I think I need you to change your AoE attack. Only because at the moment there's no plan for either range in combat nor fights beyond 1x1. As such, I'm thinking something like giving it a larger chance of success. Such as making a roll of 5 also a successful attack. And possibly lower the cooldown a touch?

Your passive I think can be fun, depending on the environment of each fight. :3

Wait like absolutely no range? I'm not trying to challenge your rights as owner of this RP, but wouldn't that kill off the abilities of a ton of players? A lot of magic gets removed by that decision, and gunslingers and archers would also be out. But I can definitely change my AOE to a higher chance to hit, or maybe something different altogether, like a terrain manipulation shot.

Edit: @Mythy the Dragon-Wolf i have modified the AOE attack

Mythy and I had a short conversation in PMs, and I think the questions I asked may be asked by others. So here are the questions and answers from that convo!
Q: Is there any limit to the amount of equipment one can have?
A: I don't think so, though it may also depend on the character itself and what makes sense
Q: So when you say the equipment gets better as the tournaments go on, what do you mean by that, especially considering it says that it doesn't really give you any benefits.
A: But really it just means if you wanna emote fancier gear or flashier attacks or such I guess?

Regarding range, I believe that the attack rolls simply determine if a melee characters manages to get into range for an attack. It could easily be flavored that the ranged characters manages to either get away or push back their opponent before their own turn ^^

wouldn't that kill off the abilities of a ton of players?
Well, no. What I meant was there's no real seperation between melee and ranged attacks. You can obviously have ranged attacks and magic, but I felt that having a measured range aspect would make things a bit too complicated and/or skewed towards ranged.

As for your character I have one more question. For your first ability, do you mean like - each time Sail does a total defense, she gains 1 die in the pool. She can have up to 5 dice in in the pool and spends them all at once as the turn? No other cooldowns or effects?

She doesn't even defend when she does it, she basically uses the ability while moving away in order to prepare for an attack, but if you think considering that a total defense is fair then I'll definitely take it. I was considering putting a cooldown on the ability, but it would only make sense if she were using her gun(because the gun would overheat). Her ability to store up attacks is very much a mental thing that wouldn't really tire her out as she is simply waiting to find a perfect time to get multiple attacks off.

@Sail

Well, what I'm getting to be thinking of in this conversation is - don't know if you've seen it - Chivalry of a Failed Knight. Main Character, Ikki Kurogane. There's a few differences but now I'm rambling, the point is that you can observe an opponent's style while defending against it. So personally I feel that her getting a die each time she only defends (so no attack dice at all) fits with the lore and is a bit more fair than just giving up turns.

Alright sounds good :D I'll make sure to add that to the ability description. Thanks a ton!

Anything else I need to modify before I'm good?

@Sail

Not that I can see, without testing at least! She's approved :D

I am thinking about starting off the Resort thread tonight, now that we have three characters

Sounds good :D I've been really excited for some RP recently!

@Sail @Tiguidi

Either of you want to do some practice combat rounds? Could fashion it as a dungeon crawler if you might prefer, though it'd be a bit less accurate :D

I'm up for it if Sail wants ^^

Alrighty! Well, as we wait, the Resort thread is open!

yeah I'm up for it!

@Sail @Tiguidi

Alright! How should we do this? The dungeon crawl, or just a non-canon sparring match between you two?

Hmmmm well a non-canon sparring match would probably be easier, and if we get more people added we can switch to doing things officially faster
@Mythy the Dragon-Wolf

That works with me!

@Sail @Tiguidi

Alright, I won't expect full detail for this. But don't hesitate to do it if you want!
