Hey Iwaku, I love polls, and what better month than February to make a poll like this? It's a very simple question: do you write sexual scenes in your roleplays? There is no occasionally answer, because "Yes" is the answer for if you write them at all, even if only very rarely. If you do write them, and you want to elaborate on why you like writing them, do so below! I'd be curious to see what the common consensus is.

I write them, but only with certain partners! It's got to be someone that I am comfortable with and trust not to take it too and, you know, try to make it sexual OUTSIDE of rp!
I am not the best at writing smuuuutttt so I am nervous and awkward about it and I most likely would get uncomfortable if a stranger I didn't know was like "Hey let's writing our characters banging" 🤣 Write some non-sexual stuff with me first, chat with me, be my friend... then maybe we can get into saucier stuff XD

HELL YEAH I DO!

But I have only done so with a small handful of people. XD Mostly because rps tend to die before I ever get to the point in the story where a sex scene would happen. I didn't even start writing sex scenes until I was 24 and finally had real life sex cause I was too embarrassed to even try.

As a romance roleplayer, I like to use EVERYTHING as an aid of story telling romance and sex scenes are AWESOME for that! They're great for character development, plot bunnies, story beats and all. I even wrote a guide about it. Cause many people assume it's all about that tasty porn for porn's sake, but NAY DEAR LOVES! IT'S SUCH A GREAT STORY ELEMENT!

It's challenging and fun to write different kinds of sex scenes to express different types of emotions and points in a character's life. The amount of creativity you can throw into it based on personalities, likes and dislikes, styles and kinks and all that jazz. O_O I love it.

I def write them and I can vary quite drastically depending on my partner. It can be cute and fluffy or it can be pretty heavy and kinky. BUT that last one takes a very deep trust and honestly, I really only have one rp partner I talk dirty shit with because we are admittedly both more freaky than I care to admit.

I write smutty scenes for both amusement and developing skill. Generally it's a part of storytelling most of the time. Although if its all sex, then I'm out. Its gotta have a reason and purpose. Not just a "How you doin?", wink wonk, then they are banging like crazed rabbits while putting porn stars to shame.

HOWEVER, I love slow burns. SO I will write sex scenes but if ppl come at me expecting it right out of the gate, then I get weird and don't wanna XD

I write them because they're easy to come up with and I'm horny (I joke only slightly, but in all seriousness I'm fine with sex as a concept, so it's like describing anything else in writing to me).

That's literally it. I can whip up an nsfw scene and the motivation to write it/the build-up to it (usually) easier than I can, say, a novel length fanfic or grand spanning epic of a plot. Although that isn't to say that I can't do that either. But yeah. I write them because they're easy. I don't typically need a purpose either beyond the scene in my head. The desire to get it out of my mind and onto the page is purpose enough.

Unfortunately this has stuck me in a bit of a rut fanfiction wise. Now all people want from me is more fluff and smut. Granted, some things I like more in my smut (such as MxF pairings), but that's probably because I have the most experience writing cis-het relationships over all the others.

I adore writing sex scenes in my roleplays, I've been going it for many years. I'm a very romance centered writer in general and smut feels like a natural progression. Though I'm also okay with fading to black! But I'd prefer to play with someone who also feels that smut can be fun and a great way to see how our characters interact. Do they giggle or laugh during the act? Or are they super serious? Do they get exasperated? Are they so into it that their brain melts and they become a flushed disaster? And if so, how does that change the scene? Are they going to get interrupted? How do they finish? Are they embarrassed? A cuddler? Or a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am/sir? Intimacy can tell you a lot about your characters. Including how they are NOT having sex. Why? Do they masturbate? Why or why not? What do they think about? Where do they do it? What are their kinks?

Didn't used to, and generally prefer fading. That's less a writing thing and more a 'please don't make this friendship weird' kind of thing though. Bad experiences. Smut for its own sake also isn't really any different for me than pure slice of life, and my brain kills momentum in either real quick. Smut that advances a plot or a character arc, or helps define a relationship is different, I just can't really get the ADHD gremlins to keep quiet if things get lean towards the other direction. As others have mentioned, right partner and communication can/does alleviate a ton. If it's a situation where it would move things and is important but I don't know the person well enough, I've done scene outlines ooc before.

The biggest thing for me though is that intimate scenes are where a lot of characters are going to be their most vulnerable, so you can get things out of those scenes you wouldn't without them. You get a very different peak inside their heads, which can be a lot of fun.

I do enjoy me some smut!
I do mainly stick to plot oriented rps that have the occasional smut in it but I also will sometimes do pwp for the hell of it, especially if it's a pre-established ship.

My favorite aspect of it is that you now can present your character in a setting that almost no else will see them in and it's a chance to add character. Of course, this can also be shown via more tame intimacy but a person can be very different between a make out sesh and going at it, and it's just plain fun hah.

THAT SAID, I do always worry that (specifically when it's a new rp partner) that I may be too much because, if you ask me, there's also levels within writing smut itself. I come from a time where smut was just called lemons so it's safe to say, my brain is a little rotten

All my role plays have "sex" (or "erotic themes") in it.. in one way or the other... no gonzo porn of course

but again what is "smut"? Eg: Compare European and US opinion about that :P

I've only roleplayed sex scenes a couple of times with a friend for our shared AU, but that was years ago when we were younger. I learned plenty as I got older, and I'll continue to learn more.

I think the main reason why I'd consider writing them is because I see sex as a bridge for connection and intimacy, both outside and inside roleplaying. Like for example, characters who have never known the feel of gentle hands finally being on the receiving end of it, etc.

I remember reading a Tumblr post on why sex scenes in fiction is art (I should try finding that post again; it was really good and thought-provoking), and I've since decided that it would be my philosophy when it comes to erotic content.

Yes. I like to think of it as another plot in the story. The connection between the characters has reached a certain point where they decide to become intimate. There are a lot of avenues the characters can go after. Love, etc. So it's interesting to see.

whats funny is that i was just talking about this semi-recently. although i can do roleplays without any nsfw content or genuine smut scenes, i think there is something added when i get the chance to include it. i dont really know how to describe it, but i think theres something really beautiful in sex and sensuality that i love to explore. i think it can expand on characterization and character relationships, and is genuinely something i find fun to write. one of the problems i have, though, is that i don't like writing smut with the active intent for someone to- for lack of better terms- get off on it. the minute that i get the impression someone is doing this to kind of make erotic material for themselves, i get icked out and i dont want to do it anymore 😅
