Not Him!

Ezra gave a soft smile as he felt Robby's hand on his knee, but it didn't last, fading quickly. "Thanks," he whispered, just as his mother walked into the small dining room with a plate of chicken. She set it down before disappearing into the kitchen. When she came back, she set a pot of white rice on a potholder and said, "Dig in, boys," she said, sitting down.

"Thanks, Mom," Ezra said, and stood up. In the kitchen, he grabbed a bottle of Coke from the fridge. He returned to the dining room and poured it into his glass before he asked Robby, "Want some?" He took a sip from his glass, trying to act as normal as he could for his mother. After hiding his sexuality from her for years, he was an expert at masking his emotions in front of her.

"Absolutely," Robby grinned as Ezra poured him some soda, "Thanks man." He sipped his drink before piling some food onto his plate. He loved Ezra's mother's cooking. His mother is always so busy with work that she never has time to cook, it got even worse after dad left.
"Chicken's delicious by the way, thank you for letting me stay for dinner," Robby smiled. He was always so polite with adults, even if he secretly despised them, not that he secretly despised Ezra's mother at all.

"Oh, of course, sweetie. You're always so polite and kind. Besides, you're a good influence on Ezra...who knows what he would do if he didn't have you around," she added jokingly, smiling over at Robby.

Ezra gave a small smile as he cut off a piece of chicken. Eating it, he smiled at the juicy taste of the chicken that warmed him from the inside out. Even after all that had happened, Ezra could hardly tell that his mother had gone through a nasty divorce just a few years ago. She was still the warm, loving mother she had always been, she still cooked him dinner every night, asked him how his day was. The father-sized hole that was left after the divorce was mostly filled by her love and caring for her son.

Spooning some rice into his mouth, he was mostly silent during dinner, still worried about going back to school on Monday. Hopefully, everything would be fine by then...
