[ Amegakure | Capital of the Rain Province | Akinian Empire ]
[ Sho Deshuga | ex-chuunin of the Akinian military ]

Panting, he stared at his hands. The cold, wet stone did little to provide any comfort. But at the moment, he didn't desire any comfort. Raising a hand to wipe the blood from his lips, Sho looked at the men. Cloaked in dark raincoats, they stood there as silent statues - judging him.
His eyes narrowed as his anger grew - numbing his pain and allowing him to push himself up again.

"Just back off, son," one of the men said, his tone betraying his pity. Something that only made Sho grow ever angrier at these men. Without any warning, he dashed forwards - his right hand balled into a fist.
But before he could enjoy the satisfaction of slamming his fist against the man's face, another moved in - catching Sho from the side and kicking him down.
Coughing Sho tried to get up, only to feel a weight keeping him down.
"Don't try it again, boy. Or else we will take you in as well. Won't be your first but might be your last if you keep it up."
Feeling the cold and wet stone against his cheek Sho still tried to resist and fight back. He couldn't care anymore. If they were to take everything away, they might as well provide him with the joy of a scuffle. But the bunch of cowards were with more and seemed to be prepared. Even moulding the tiniest bit of chakra surprisingly didn't seem to work.

Closing his eyes, his body eased. Yet, his anger only grew in volume - desperately wanting to taste blood.

It had now been three full days since he had been kicked out of the military. Some distrust had been build-up, and someone had filed a charge against him. Of course, nobody told who the frigging coward was. Only that Sho still hadn't answered for the crimes of murdering someone during the unrest that plagued Amegakure during the tenure of the previous Amekage. And, of course, they had some weird evidence that seemed legit enough to use against him.
It was stupid and odd. He couldn't make sense of it. And he didn't want to care for it either. Who even wanted to be part of the 'Imperial military' anyways? Bunch of pretentious pricks that considered themselves the heroes of the empire.
Scoffing, Sho turned his head and spat on the ground. He couldn't care less if the whole empire trembled and got swallowed whole the next day. If the Imperial military prefered listening to some coward that didn't want to accuse him in the face, then perhaps it was for the better?
Sho crossed his arms as he kept leaning against the wall.
Yeah, fuck those dogs, he mused to himself. All that the Imperial military had been good for was the pay - and perhaps allowing him to beat up that Uchiha loser.

Watching people pass him by, Sho glared at each and single one of them. His anger hadn't subdued ever since they had arrested his mother and kicked him out of his house. It wasn't bad enough that the police corps was made out incompetent suckers, but now they took everything from him?
A soft growl briefly interrupted Sho's thoughts. The hunger he had woken up with hadn't vanished yet. And with the last of his coins been used yesterday, he had no idea how to get food.
The thought of just taking food had occurred in his mind. He deserved it, after all, to have some food. He had bled for this stupid city, might as well finally get a reward for it.
The problem was that he didn't want to give in. They were expecting it from him. Sho had noticed the various police officers and guards patrolling the street. Clearly to be ready to catch him redhanded. To then throw him in prison and keep him there; much like his father.

Another growl, this time louder, erupted from Sho's stomach. Pushing himself from the wall, he decided to walk. Where to? He had no clue.
The drops of rain continued to fall upon Sho as he walked down the street, ignoring everyone and purposefully bumping a shoulder against a fellow or two. Yet nobody seemed to mind him enough to say anything.
Which only made him more upset.
Taking a turn to the right, he ventured into a street where only a few people could be spotted. Ignoring the individuals, he continued just aimlessly to walk further. Sunken in thoughts, he only noticed a few moments later a figure standing in the middle of the street.
Frowning, Sho cocked his head to the left.
"Fuck off," he mumbled, wanting to continue down the street. But the hooded person remained in the way.
"I said, fuck off," Sho said, clenching his hands into fists. Yet, his words or change of stance didn't provoke any reaction of the hooded figure. Then a smile cracked on Sho's features as he realised something.
"Good, I needed to vent anyway."

Dashing forwards, the boy brought his right fist up. Attempting to punch the hooded figure, he noticed that the person moved backwards. Not allowing the individual to get away that easily, Sho quickly grabbed the dark coat and pulled - forcing the individual to remain close.
Attempting to punch again, he noticed how the other person managed to catch his blow.
Releasing the coat, Sho grabbed the individual and wanted to slam them against the nearby wall. But as he attempted, he noticed that the other person used his force against him.
Blinking twice, he felt only a moment the pain at his back. Staring at the sky, the constant drops of water made Sho realise that he laid on his back.

"Now now, let's play nice," the figure said in a rather playful tone. The hooded individual took a few steps away from Sho, almost if they allowed him to get up and retry it all again.
While getting up, Sho noticed that nobody else was around anymore. A fact that alarmed him, but his anger got the better of him. He was done being treated like some scamp.
This time, he charged in again. But as he lashed out, lightning crackled around his arm briefly before expanding rapidly. The individual attempted to get away, but Sho was able to respond faster.
"Play with this," he grumbled, letting the lightning course through as his fingers grabbed the coat. But instead of hearing any painful grunt or plea to make it stop, Sho was met with a puff of smoke.

An arm quickly wrapped around his neck and pulled hardback. Gasping for air, Sho's hands promptly shot towards the arm that was choking the air out of his throat. Before he could discharge more lightning at his opponent, he was worked against the ground.
"I would love to play but not now, Sho Deshuga," the voice said, having a feminine touch to it. "And I am not here to toy with you but to propose something."

Wanting to fight back, Sho's anger grew. He didn't give a single fuck what this person wanted. All that everyone wanted was to use him for what he was; the son of Soru. Angry and frustrated, he did halt to fight back. The painful ache of hunger overwhelmed his emotions, causing him to lay still.
"Clever boy. Now, I will let you go," the individual stated, doing as she told him. Registering the sound of boots taking some distance from him, Sho slowly got up and turned around. Glaring at the hooded individual, he felt once more the need to try to pummel them bloody - to unleash his pent-up aggression on the nuisance in front of him.

"Now, let us talk, hm?~"

[ Dagrún Hon and Hylli Hyuzu | A collab between @Aliceee and @Autumn Song ]
[ Assigned to check out what disturbance was discovered, as the rest of the unit stands on guard - overseeing the meeting that transpires nearby. Heading out together, Dagrún and Hylli stumble upon trouble. ]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leading the way, Dagrún felt new energy pulsing through her body. Traversing through the field and entering the woods, the Hon prefered to be in motion than to stand still and watch over some meeting. Her left hand lazily rested on the pommel of her blade while her blue eyes scanned the area for anything that could betray 'excitement'.
"Ye don't know how to read tracks, do ye Hyuzu?" Dagrún asked as she beckoned the genin to follow closely,
"it is a handy skill to have. Knowing is half the battle, they say. Whoever said that first must have the preference to ambush and murder its prey without much of a struggle. Not necessary my favourite way of fighting something," Dagrún said as she crouched down to inspect some tracks.
Running the gloved fingers of her right hand past the tracks, the blonde Hon frowned. They weren't human but indeed not anything herbivore either. The long claw marks made that clear.
"Judging on how deep the print is, ye can investigate how much of a hurry yer query was. Or if it was injured and such." Dagrún explained as she gestured to the few prints in the mud.
"Seems like a wolf. A bit bigger than the usual though," Dagrún thought out loud as she leaned forward. Picking up a broken branch, she brought the object closer to her face - taking a short sniff.
"Nay, this isn't a wolf or a bear," Dagrún said, a grimace spreading over her features, "this one stinks far too much for that."
Hylli kept some distance. Not only out of respect but to observe and learn from the Dowhon. There was a brief excitement within Hylli as well, realising that she went to investigate together with Dagrún. The blonde Hon seemed quite capable as well versed in how to deal with tracks. All that Hylli could see and understand that something went here. But other than that? She hadn't the faintest clue.
" You tracked wolves and bears before?" Hylli asked, slightly confused when Dagrún came to her conclusion upon sniffing a broken branch. Did the Hon use some technique? She hadn't weaved any hand signs, Hylli mused to herself.
" So what now? We report to the lieutenant that it was some beast?" Hylli asked, a tinge of disappointment coursing through her - fully expecting that they were going back and just stood for some more hours, guarding some hill.
"Nay," Dagrún answered as she rose up, "something is off. Listen," Dagrún instructed the Hyuzu as she became silent as well. The eyes of the Dowhon narrowed as she glanced around.
"Do ye notice it? It is completely silent. Just observing tracks doesn't help ye out. Ye need to use yer other abilities. Smell is as important as sound."
Once more Dagrún became silent, clearly observing the situation and trying to figure out what was amiss. "Follow me and be as silent as ye be, Hyuzu. We might find something better than an oversized, stinking mutt."
Drawing the hatchet from her weapon belt, Dagrún started to follow the tracks - nearly not making any sound as she did so.
Hylli frowned as she listened. She wasn't sure if she was missing something. Until Dagrún stated that it was completely silent, it dawned on Hylli; where was the ambience of a forest? Weren't birds or insects supposed to make any sounds?
Nodding slowly as she understood that something was wrong, Hylli placed her right hand on the hilt of her blade. Using her shield to already protect herself against what may be lurking in wait for them, Hylli slowly followed Dagrún.
Following the tracks, Dagrún suddenly halted. Slowly turning her head to the right, she stared at a tree. The stark expression seemed to betray a growing excitement and joy without explaining what appeared to cause the Hon's delight.
Signalling to Hylli to wait, Dagrún raised the hatchet in her hand. Aiming at something unseen, the Hon flung the weapon with all the might she could collect in one hand.
Before Dagrún could explain, the soaring projectile hit its mark - causing a loud grunt to be followed by a duff thud.
"Aha! Found ye bunch of weasels!" Dagrún voiced as she drew her blade and pointed at the direction of her throw.
Without warning, various individuals rushed forwards with drawn weapons. Their cries in a language that neither Dagrún nor Hylli could comprehend.
Parrying the jab of her first opponent with deft dexterity, Dagrún lashed out and managed to wound her first opponent mortally. In quick succession, the Hon moved closer to Hylli.
"Now we gonna report this to the lieutenant!"
Hylli blinked rapidly as Dagrún came to a halt. Wanting to ask what Dagrún had found, Hylli noticed that Dagrún signal. Throwing a look at the direction Dagrún was staring at, Hylli couldn't figure out what had caught Dagrún's attention.
Only to be surprised as Dagrún threw her axe and then seemingly hit a target. Drawing her weapon, Hylli turned to the direction, only further surprised by the arrival of several armed individuals.
Using her shield to block the initial attacks, Hylli gritted her teeth. Blocking an attack, she would lash out quickly - driving one opponent back, without causing any harm.
"Understood!" Hylli responded, still keeping her focus on the few individuals. Taking a step back, she held her shield between her and their foes.
" You think these are all of them?"
"Oh nay, there are more of the weasels," Dagrún replied, her tone betraying her happiness. With sword drawn, Dagrún made sure to guard the left of Hylli - keeping her sights trained on their foes as well.
But as the Hon expected, their enemies started to circle quickly around them - having the superiority of numbers to do so.
"Seems the odds are one against three. A fair fight for any true-blooded Ylfing!"
Finishing her sentence, Dagrún took a quick step forward. Catching her first opponent by surprise, the blonde Hon lashed out. The deadly swing of her weapon was accompanied by the song of steel soaring through the air. Only to be followed by a gasp as the steel bite deeply into the abdomen of her foe.
Yerking her weapon out, Dagrún quickly turned as another foe stepped forwards - attempting to deliver a quick jab with a short spear. Managing to deflect the attack, Dagrún flicked the wrist of her left hand. Lightning immediately seemed to crack and jump around the blonde woman - scaring her two remaining opponents off.
Raising her shield, Hylli blocked one attack. As she had been trained, Hylli didn't remain passive. With her opponent's sword slammed against her shield Hylli slightly adjusted her shield and rammed her sword forwards. The odd vibration as the satisfaction of her weapon carving into her intended target caused her to twist the weapon - wanting the steel to rupture and mortally wound her foe, before jerking the weapon in one haul out of her enemy.
Shifting her attention on her two other opponents, she felt the rush of adrenaline moving through her body. Then her two remaining foes rushed in together.
Moving her shield to block the attack on her right Hylli quickly raised her sword to deflect the strike from the left. Feeling vibrations coursing through her arms; as a result, she tried to push her attacks back - only to be driven around by their collective weight and strength.
Struggling for a second to remain standing, Hylli felt another vibration. But instead of her arms, it was at her stomach and chest. Falling on her back, it took her a second or two to register what had occurred.
Looking at the man that had tackled her and raised his blade, Hylli twisted her body. Feeling something at her right ear Hylli didn't worry much about it as she raised her arms. Grabbing the man's arms and preventing him from raising his blade, she noticed in the corner of her vision, the other opponent. Who raised his mace, clearly aiming for Hylli's head on the ground.
Before the mace could descend, a flash of lightning seemed to bolt and hit the man square in the chest. Slammed by the powerful force, the individual was hurled against a tree. The following sound of bones cracking radiated through the air.
A cry then emitted from the man on top of Hylli as a force slammed him off her. Specks of blood rained down on the Hyuzu's face as Dagrún drove her opponent to the ground. Pulling her blade out, Dagrún raised the weapon again for a final stab.
A rancid stank seemed to infest the air; that of burnt hair, skin and flesh.
"Come on, now we gotta warn the lieutenant," Dagrún said as she offered a hand to Hylli.
Closing her eyes as the sensation of warm blood splashed on her face, Hylli froze. For a second, she wondered if it was her blood. Opening her eyes, she twisted her head to take in the scene around her.
"Eh-yeah!" Accepting the help from Dagrún, Hylli quickly moved on her feet. Picking up her shield and sword, she was surprised by the sight of death around her. Was this easy for Dagrún?
Wanting to learn more from the blonde woman, Hylli realised that they first had an important objective.
The others needed to be warned!
[ Part 1 ]
Another sound reached his ears and Matatabi snarled, turning towards the entrance in time to see a small object hurtling in from the doorway. Leaping in front of Kiyomi, the beast tried to call out a warning before the object exploded and a cloud of smoke began filling the area. "Smoke bomb," he muttered, "bloody cowards..." Taking a few steps backwards, Matatabi tilted his ears, remaining alert to any sounds around them.
Remaining on one knee, Kiyomi raised her arms to protect her face. As the smoke started to engulf both her and Matatabi, she responded in turn. "Time to return the favour."
Bringing her hands together, Kiyomi sped through the required signals before finishing with 'tiger'. Inhaling deeply, she felt how the breath was rapidly converted into the desired effect.
Once she started to exhale, her breath would seemingly spread and expand the smokescreen, if not causing it to become much more unbearable to breath in due to the increased density and heat.
"All yours," Kiyomi stated as she would rapidly move away to one corner of the room where she could stay away from the imminent attack.
A wicked grin spread across Matatabi's face as he caught along with what Kiyomi had planned. "With pleasure~" he replied, inhaling and forming chakra in his mouth. After a moment, the Bijuu spat out a large ball of fire, igniting the flammable smoke that Kiyomi had produced and setting the air ablaze. It was over in a flash, but the sight was magnificent. Matatabi admired how the blue flames filled the space in front of him and around the entrance, dancing rhythmically as they engulfed everything in their path.
When the flames had died out and burnt the smoke away, the fiery feline raised a single eyebrow, expecting a charred corpse to be all that was left of the fool who had attempted to catch them by surprise. Instead, however, the entrance appeared empty. Frowning, Matatabi let out another low growl. "Sneaky bastard..." Turning his head back to look at Kiyomi, something caught the corner of his eye and the Bijuu instinctively ducked as a kunai whizzed above his head. Turning his attention back to the door, he watched as three more kunai hurtled towards him. Dodging the first two and smacking the third aside with his paw, Matatabi tried to make out where exactly their opponent was hiding.
A blur streaking in from the doorway marked the entrance of their first real opponent.
Before the blur could cross the distance and attempt to attack Matatabi, something else shot in between the small Bijuu and its attacker. A sharp ring of steel briefly resonated as Kiyomi blocked two swords - utilizing two kunai herself. Lightning then rapidly crackled around the Hon, forcing the opponent to withdraw quickly.
"Takamitsu Keiji," Kiyomi replied through her telepathic contact with Matatabi. "Master swordsman, apparently. Despite not furthering his ambitions with the Seven Swordsmen," she calmly further informed the Bijuu, while their opponent readied himself - his blades flaring up with a bright blue chakra.
Lightning jumped around Kiyomi, the violent energy resonating a menacing sound.
Then at the same time, Kiyomi and Keiji surged forwards. The clash between the two made sparks rain as the two combatants entered into a deadly dance - each attempting to land a vicious blow upon the other.
Snarling as the blur approached, Matatabi's eyes narrowed as Kiyomi shot in front of him, intercepting the enemy. She called out the name of their opponent, along with his apparent 'skills' and the Bijuu's frown deepened. Great, a swordsman. In his current form, there wasn't much Matatabi would be able to do against a swordsman with Kiyomi engaging him in close quarters. A fireball may have done the trick nicely, but now he'd have to worry about burning the girl to a crisp as well.
Grumbling under his breath, the beast looked for a way to assist. He couldn't engage directly as the two were locked in a deadly dance. If he timed it right though, perhaps he could distract the man and give Kiyomi an opening. Focusing intently, Matatabi moved in line with Kiyomi and Takamitsu. Remaining low and just out of reach, he extended the claws on his right front paw, waiting for his chance.
Now!
Surging forwards, he managed to land one slash across the lower leg of the swordsman. Not exactly where he'd been aiming, he was hoping to take out the man's achilles tendon, but the swordsman had adjusted quickly enough to avoid the crippling strike. Before he could correct and try again, however, a strange whistling caught his ear before and the beast dove to the side instinctively. A strange blade flew past him, plunging into the floor where he'd just been standing, digging itself in up to the hilt. Whoever threw the blade either had immense strength, or had augmented the weapon to some degree.
His eyes scanned up quickly, in time to see another man enter the room, this one holding two knives. As Matatabi watched, the air around the knives in the man's hands seemed to shift, as if vibrating intensely. Grumbling again, the beast replied to Kiyomi through their link, "So we get the swordsman aaaand the man who likes to play with knives. Just fantastic..."
Slamming one of her kunai towards their opponent, Kiyomi had hoped to drive the sharp point deep into the man's chest. But Keiji seemed to live up to the delivered information; he still stood and managed to hold his ground against both Kiyomi and Matatabi harassing him.
Pulling her kunai back, Kiyomi was forced to rapidly fall back - feeling the odd sensation of the man's blade missing her head by a mere inch.
Panting lightly as she kept her eyes on Keiji, who readied for another bout, Kiyomi felt her frustration flaring up again. Only for Matatabi's voice to resonate in her mind.
"Knives? Tanji Joben, Earth Country. Wind chakra," Kiyomi drummed up through their link as she readied herself for another clash with her current opponent. "Sorry Mata, but you got to handle that one for yourself now."
Barely had Kiyomi finished her message to the Bijuu or her enemy dashed towards her. Able to raise her defense, Kiyomi's eyes narrowed. Her foe was capable of covering his openings faster than she could drive one of the kunai through it.
A sharp sound rang loud in Kiyomi's right ear, upon Keiji's sword slicing through the cloth but being held back by the protective gear Kiyomi wore underneath.
The sudden realization was followed nearly immediately by lightning flaring up around Kiyomi - forcing her opponent to withdraw once more.
"I will try to finish--" Kiyomi spoke through the telepathic link but noticing something in the corner of her eyes.
Lowering herself, Kiyomi felt a subtle breeze of motion passing over her. Forced to quickly withdraw, the corners of Kiyomi's lips lowered.
"Great."
"Oh don't worry, I'll handle him alright," came Matatabi's initial grumpy response. "You focus on the other guy that likes pointy sticks." Turning his full attention towards the knife wielding wind wizard, Matatabi growled, gathering chakra up in his mouth. Spitting a medium-sized fireball towards Tanji, the beast began moving to the side, trying to force the man to move away from Kiyomi and her current opponent.
Predictably, Tanji used his wind release to shift the direction of the fireball enough that he could dodge out of the way with relative ease. Letting both knives fly forwards, they curled around the fireball and Matatabi cursed inwardly as he realized the man was able to adjust their trajectory. This was going to be trickier than he'd hoped.
Charging towards Tanji, Matatabi let out three smaller fireballs, targeting the area around the man, hoping to pin him in.The blades whistled towards the fiery feline and he altered his course at the last possible second, watching them whiz by him.
"Shit!" He snarled, wincing in pain as he realized the blades were still coated with a layer of wind chakra which increased their cutting range. While he didn't have a truly 'physical' form, the cuts still hurt and he would need to be careful otherwise he'd burn through chakra quickly, leaving Kiyomi alone to fight the remaining enemies.
Eyeing her two opponents, Kiyomi's anger started to rise again. The uncomfortable warmth started to spread from her stomach, causing her fingers to experience an itch. Yet, she didn't move forward to get on the offense.
Taking a step back, she considered a certain approach to grant both Matatabi and her some more advantage. But before she could take any action, her two opponents surged forwards.
In a good unison, both foes were quick to start to drive and corner Kiyomi away from Matatabi. The blades of Keiji were moving faster than before, the menacing blue hue of chakra accompanying the deadly slashes and stabs. On top of that, her newest opponent seemed to favour taijutsu but there was something off about it.
Fending off an attack from Keiji's blades, Kiyomi wanted to release another outrage of lightning - determining to shock and fry her opponents. But nothing seemed to happen.
Confused for a moment, Kiyomi quickly raised her other kunai and felt the heavy vibrations moving through her arm. Only then did she notice who was responsible.
The older man that had joined the fight against her had his palms wide open, the brief arc of lightning vanishing making it clear who was responsible. Before Kiyomi could act, she felt an impact at her stomach - causing her to skid backwards as a painful ache spread from the place of impact.
Coughing, Kiyomi tried to straighten her back as holding the kunai in a defensive stance.
The fireballs had the desired effect of pinning Tanji in place, though the man made it look like a much simpler effort than Matatabi would have liked. His pride now hurt, Matatabi surged towards the man, fire in his eyes. Two more blades whipped towards him, but the Bijuu had a singular focus. As he charged ahead with surprising speed, Matatabi's form appeared to blur for a moment. He watched as Tanji smiled, seeing that his blades were about to meet their mark. Instead, however, they appeared to pass straight through the beast and Tanji's smile faded, a look of concern and confusion replacing it before Matatabi reappeared off to the right, now much closer to him.
The beast watched as the man cursed, reaching out to grab two more blades. Spitting out three more smaller fireballs, Matatabi's form blurred again as he continued to close in the gap towards Tanji. Raising his two knives, the man was forced to dive out of the way, sending one of the blades flying towards the Bijuu and flowing chakra into the other, intending to coat it with wind. As before, his first blade appeared to pass straight through the beast and that was when the man became truly frightened.
"Boo."
Appearing in front of the man, Matatabi's large mouth opened into a vicious grin. Tanji's eyes looked down towards the blade in his hand, now engulfed in wind, as if realizing for the first time that this might not be such a good idea against a being composed entirely of flames. Releasing just the tiniest stream of fire, Matatabi watched as it erupted quickly, covering the man before he had a chance to discard the dagger.
Sparks flew from the contact of Keiji's blade and Kiyomi's kunai. Sliding underneath the swing, Kiyomi held the kunai up to prevent the sharp steel from carving straight into her skull. Reaching Keiji's side, she seemed to prepare her next move. Only for Wada to close in and attempt to grab the girl's arm.
Noticing the movement, Kiyomi abruptly halted her attack and discharged once more a lot of lightning as she withdrew.
Much like before, the lightning seemed to not bother either opponents. Her sharp gaze, however, noticed something new. The lightning wasn't absorbed. It didn't seem to move and vanish around Wada, much like how Meisa could absorb techniques.
"Hmm," considering something, Kiyomi readied herself as the pair rapidly closed the distance once more.
Tossing one kunai upwards Kiyomi evaded the first few swings. As she was about to move forwards, to go on the offense, her eyes widened. The sharp blade, engulfed by Keiji's chakra, seemingly pierced through the cloth and protective gear - holding Kiyomi in place.
As the swordmaster twisted his sword, there was no change of expression. Without any warning, lightning expanded from Kiyomi's body. The sound of the violent force of nature briefly overwhelmed the spacious hall as it seemed eager to devour both Keiji and Wada.
Instead of being fried, the lightning seemed to twist and slowly ebb away as Wada held his arms spread, a subtle distortion visible only for a second.
"Gotcha."
Before the older Kirigakure native could pull his arms back, something moved from above - slicing an arm off clean.
Dropping from the air as her disguise as a kunai was dispelled, Kiyomi held one of her blades firmly in her grasp. Rising up from her stance, she drove the blade into the surprised Wada's side. Letting the older man slump to the ground, Kiyomi turned her gaze upon Keiji.
Turning from the charred remains of Tanji, Matatabi watched as Kiyomi expertly dispatched one of her own opponents. Taking a step forward, he heard a hissing sound, much akin to steam. Frowning, the beast glanced over his shoulder to watch as a steady stream of water doused the flaming remains of the wind wizard. Letting out a sigh, Matatabi quickly turned around fully, lowering himself to the ground as he followed the water to its source.
"Someone's trying to rain on our parade, it would appear," he grumbled through his mental link with Kiyomi. Squaring up against the elderly man who had produced the water technique, Matatabi's eyes narrowed. Water release could be particularly annoying to deal with, especially seeing as his current form would not really burn away large amounts of water quite as easily as his true form.
The old man did not look overly threatened by the beast, something that just made Matatabi's blood boil even more. Deciding to test the man, Matatabi spat out a stream of fire towards him, maintaining a safe distance for now. Weaving handseals quickly, the man spat out another stream of water, interrupting Matatabi's attack. "Pesky bastard."
Evading the few swings and jabs once more, Kiyomi wanted to use her kunai to deflect an attack. But instead of the attack being blocked, the sword of her opponent managed to finally slice through - causing Kiyomi to try to withdraw. Instead of being cautious, Keiji quickly dashed and followed up - seemingly forcing Kiyomi to focus on avoiding being sliced and diced.
Noticing that Keiji was pressuring, to force her to make a mistake or preventing her from gaining another surprise, Kiyomi figured something out.
"Huh, so this might be dumb," Kiyomi decided to voice as she moved forwards, putting herself in the path of Keiji's last jab - the stab at the height of her chest.
The move seemed to surprise Keiji, who attempted to redirect his attack - causing Kiyomi to quickly withdraw once more. A second seemed to pass by with Keiji still confused before resuming his offense.
"I know enough," Kiyomi reported back as she brought her hands together. Weaving the required hand signs rapidly while evading Keiji's attacks, the girl inhaled as she lowered herself - both blades of Keiji missing her by less than an inch.
Looking upwards, Kiyomi exhaled a stream of fire that consumed her opponent swiftly. Ignoring the horrible stench and screaming of Keiji, Kiyomi took a second to catch her breath.
The old man was surprisingly swift for his age and Matatabi was forced to leap backwards quickly as he launched a counterattack, sending a large wave of water crashing towards the beast. Some of the water splashed up against Matatabi, causing steam to hiss off him as the flames that comprised his body managed to burn off the water. For now…
Dodging to the side, Matatabi wanted to keep moving, not allowing the man to catch him in any techniques. Spitting out a few more fireballs towards the pest, Matatabi watched as the man brought up a shield of water to protect him.
"This one may be a little difficult for me to deal with," he muttered through the link with Kiyomi. Snarling as another spout of water shot towards him.
Turning her attention as Matatabi called out for her, Kiyomi considered her options. An expert on Water? Arata Okura, the name flashed through her mind as she had studied the list of people that were part of this 'ambush'. An opponent that could really be a pain to Mata's current form. Yet, for her lightning? It was the perfect foe.
Wanting to intervene into the fight, Kiyomi was barely a few paces away until a few balls of fire slammed into the ground. The heat forced Kiyomi to quickly move backwards. Before she was able to locate the culprit of the sudden attack, a few larger balls of fire soared towards her.
"Kinda busy," Kiyomi replied as she was forced to keep falling back, in order to avoid being burnt.
Finally managing to locate her newest foe, Kiyomi released a heavy sigh as she stayed ready for any new fire techniques. Only for something to dawn in her mind. "Okay, new plan. Get close to your foe. I will handle the rest," Kiyomi instructed Matatabi as she dashed forwards to her opponent.
"Get close to him??" Matatabi asked incredulously, "What a brilliant idea, why didn't I think of that?" Sarcasm dripped through his tone, but nevertheless the Bijuu began shifting his position so that he could approach the water wielder. "You know," he began, "If you want to dispose of me Kiyomi, there are easier ways of doing it."
Launching another fireball to create an opening, Matatabi darted forward swiftly, closing in the distance between himself and Arata. "Whatever you're planning, you'd better do it quickly, otherwise I'm going to be one unhappy kitty."
Ignoring the sarcasm of Matatabi, Kiyomi focused on closing on her foe. Dodging the fire techniques was easier said than done. Various moments she could feel the pain of the heat being - indicating that her theory was the only reason she had yet to sustain any injury; they were attempting to capture her, thus being more cautious in pin-point attacks.
Dashing to the right, Kiyomi barely avoided a large ball of fire slamming against her. Finishing a streak of hand signs, she would ready herself to continue her goal of closing the distance. Sighting that her target readied a bigger fire technique, Kiyomi narrowed her eyes before heading forwards.
Moving forward, she didn't make any attempt to direct her body to the side to avoid the stream of fire. Only when the heat started to reach her, Kiyomi firmly planted her heels into the ground as she moved her hands in front of herself.
"Swap!"
The word was the only warning before the positions of Matatabi and Kiyomi were swapped, with the flames engulfing Matatabi. Now in his place, Kiyomi glared at the water expert.
"Boo."
Hearing the word, Matatabi felt both a sense of relief as well as anger. Before he had any chance to react, however, he was suddenly staring in the face of a large fireball. Raising a single eyebrow, the beast allowed the flames to surround him, feeding his own fire and allowing him to grow slightly larger. When the flames died down slightly, he grinned towards his new opponent. "That felt rather lovely," he said, purring. "Now it's my turn."
Inhaling deeply, Matatabi gathered a large amount of chakra in his mouth, spitting out a fireball twice the size of the one the man had sent towards Kiyomi. His efforts were met with a scream and the sizzling smell of delicious barbecue. "Well that was rather e-" he was cut off from bragging about his kill by a strange energy that shot up around him. Snarling, Matatabi tried to leap backwards but collided into another wall of energy. "Something strange going on here," he snarled through the mental link.
Bloodcurdling screams originated from the place where Kiyomi and Arata were last seen. Instead of two figures, a cloud of steam seemed to obscure what happened - save it for the lightning that jumped around the edge of the steam cloud.
Dropping her hold on Arata, Kiyomi calmed her chakra down. Thus reducing the presence of lightning sparking and flashing around the cloud of steam.
"What do you--" Kiyomi cut short as she slammed against something solid. Frowning, she stared at what appeared in front of her. A wall of energy?
Throwing a look over her shoulder, she noticed yet another wall. A soft and subtle sound rang to her left, to which Kiyomi glanced.
"Barrier ninjutsu," Kiyomi replied through the mental link, "hmm," looking for a way out, she did start to notice that the barrier started to shrink her possible space. Causing her soon to try to push back the walls that were trying to hold her in place.
"Barrier ninjutsu? Greeeeeeaaat" came the cat's reply. Pushing against the walls again, Matatabi could also feel his begin compressing. "Only way out is through, I suppose," he snarled, unleashing a continuous stream of fire that quickly filled the small space he was trapped within. The heat of the flames felt nice, but otherwise did not seem to be having much effect until… pushing again, Matatabi felt the walls give way slightly. Continuing to release the flames, he began pushing forward, clawing at the invisible wall in front of him, hoping to break down the barrier through sheer force.
Grunting as the walls started to push against her, Kiyomi tried to think of a way out. But it wasn't easy to think and to be squashed by a barrier around her. Realising something, Kiyomi carefully positioned her right arm, so that it was her elbow against the barrier. Doing the same with the left, she felt a burning sensation at her elbows. Tears started to form at her eyes as the pressure started to become heavier, making even breathing a challenge.
Forcing herself to begin and finish a streak of signs, Kiyomi remembered the lessons that Hisoka had taught her about barrier techniques.
Finishing her hand signs, a volume of lightning erupted and slammed against the walls. Nothing seemed to happen at first but very quickly, cracks started to appear where the lightning slammed itself against the barrier. Focusing on the technique that Hisoka had taught her, Kiyomi started to push back the walls.
His rage continued to grow as his onslaught against the walls seemed to have no tangible effect, aside from stopping them from closing in any faster. Letting out an exasperated snarl, the flames died down and Matatabi stopped clawing at the one in front of him. "I'm not sure I can break out here without more chakra. Whoever is responsible for these damned walls is clearly stronger than I'd like to admit. Can you break free?" he asked through the link, hoping the response from Kiyomi would be a more positive one.
Managing to win some space, Kiyomi tried to find a weak point. The barrier wasn't on the level as Hisoka's but it was still above her level. When Mata's voice rang in her mind once more, Kiyomi gritted her teeth.
"No," Kiyomi managed to utter first through the mental link. She still tried to pierce through with her lightning. But then realised that their opponents had likely prepared for such a move. Staving off her panic with reminding herself that they weren't focusing on killing her, Kiyomi went through her other options. Zakito had told her before that if the situation went south, she needed to use the Dragon Lotus to withdraw. Yet her pride refused her to make such a decision.
"Hang on. I will let you take some. Just hurry up and get me out!" Kiyomi voiced through the link, feeling the beads of cold sweat moving down her skin.
Hesitant at first to accept it once he heard the tone Kiyomi was using, Matatabi gritted his teeth. The girl was too stubborn for him to refuse her chakra now. He'd just have to hope it was enough. Drawing more of Kiyomi's chakra into his own form, Matatabi closed his eyes and focused. His form began to grow in size, straining against the barrier. Not wishing to draw too much, the Bijuu opened his eyes and released a massive wave of fire towards the wall, causing the barrier to explode outwards, releasing him. Stretching out his neck now that he was no longer constrained, Matatabi narrowed his gaze. "Now, where are you hiding?"
Catching sight of movement in the corner of his eye, Matatabi spun around, his keen feline perception allowing him to make out their last enemy, who appeared to be trying to hide in the shadows. Taking three steps towards her, Matatabi watched as the woman began weaving handseals in a panic. "I don't think so," he snarled, bounding forward.
Instead of erecting a new barrier, however, the woman launched a spear made of earth towards him. A low chuckle could be heard as Matatabi batted it aside, continuing his charge forward. The woman attempted to produce another, but the fiery feline was too quick. In seconds, it was done. Matatabi's larger size allowed him to swallow the woman whole. Turning, he released a belch, a small plume of smoke exhaling from his mouth. "Well… that wasn't so bad."
A response didn't come right away. Leaning forwards, Kiyomi had her hands on her knees. Breathing heavily, she noticed that her vision was blurry now and then whenever she exhaled. Trying to straighten her back, she threw a look around. The light provided by Matatabi's fire was bright enough to reveal most of the hall.
"Yeah," she managed to bring out through their mental link. The clash had gone relatively fast and without either of them getting hurt.
"Now it is just waiting for the word that everything is cleaned up," Kiyomi stated as she decided to sit down .There was a light aching at her elbows but she figured that it wasn't something to fret over. "Did you by the way seriously devour the last one? If you are going to get a stomach ache, don't whinge at me."
Cleaning his teeth, Matatabi shrugged as he walked over towards Kiyomi. "I was hungry. All this work gets my appetite up." Sitting on his haunches beside the girl, Matatabi sent the chakra he had 'borrowed' from Kiyomi back her way, shrinking in size until he was closer to the size of a large dog. Curling up beside Kiyomi, Matatabi yawned. "Would have been better with a little seasoning I'm sure~"
A sigh of relief escaped Kiyomi's lips upon receiving some chakra from Matatabi. Throwing a sideways look at her companion, Kiyomi couldn't hold back a small smile. As Matatabi curled beside her, she placed a hand on his head - gently scratching behind the ears.
"I will see to it that you're going to get something proper to eat, soon."
[ A meeting between the Red Demon and Lords of Lightning ]
[ A collab between @Aliceee and @Oetje ]
[ Asami Sanosuke is summoned to the court of the Daimyo of Lightning. But much as the Sanosuke expects, the true power isn't the man on the throne - but his chief advisor. During the duration of the talk Asami is facing several decisions that can change the future of various individuals - maybe the entire Lightning Country itself. ]
Walking into the complex that was the royal palace, Asami held a blank expression over her features. She already had a hunch on how the meeting would go. Or what it was concerning.
The fact that the Hojo clan was dominating the political landscape wasn't a secret to anyone. From the moment that the Hojo took the lead and directed the fight against the Regency council, it was clear that they would end up as the victor.
And worst was that Asami knew that it could be avoided. But the Sixth Raikage proved to be soft and indecisive. The Alaricus clan was forced to make decisions that saw them become a mere ally to the Hojo during the civil strife. And her people, the Sanosuke, had been too defensive and acted too late. Now? It was all too late.
Following a servant that explained the etiquettes, how one should behave in front of the Daimyo, his words fell on deaf ears. Asami didn't care much for the political play or drama that she was being dragged into. Not to mention; the Daimyo was a mere puppet of the Hojo. She wasn't meant to deal with him but with the Hojo leadership.
As the doors were opened for her, Asami was greeted with a spacious hall. A hall that held only guards and no courtiers. Something that only reinforced her suspicions. Walking further into the hall, she ignored the glare of the servant and his whispers; to lower herself and keep her head bowed.
Seeing the curtain that prevented her from adequately seeing the Daimyo, Asami saw an older man sitting to the right of it. A clear arrogant expression was plastered on the man's features, which made Asami already realise who she was going to deal with primarily this meeting.
Another servant wanted to announce Asami, but the Sanosuke was faster.
"I have come as you have requested," Asami calmly stated, placing her hands behind her back. Her eyes were briefly fixated on the curtain and the silhouette behind it. But then her gaze moved to the older man next to the curtain.
"I understand that my lords are quite busy. With making certain that the nation recovers from the terrible events it has suffered." Pausing, Asami's right eyebrow slightly perked upwards. "As such, I hope to provide answers and keep this meeting short."
There was no response from the guards that were present. Aside from the few servants, it was clear that there was an abundant amount of royal guards - their steel gaze fixated on Asami.
The older man sitting in his comfortable chair continued to look down on Asami, not responding right away. Then a smile touched his lips while he leaned slightly backwards.
"Asami Sanosuke. I have heard of your feats. Many do seem to dread to irk you or stand in your way. No doubt because of your abilities and accomplishments," the older man began, "allow me to introduce myself. I am Mareo Hojo, the current lord of the Hojo Clan. And his Majesty's chief advisor. I am most grateful you're able to understand that we have many more matters to deal with. If you can provide us with the answers or directions we seek, we would be most grateful."
Asami continued to observe the leader of the Hojo. She had seen men who believed that they were leaders. That they knew how to handle situations and were strong enough to face the opposition. Such as the Fourth Raikage. Sadly, such men crumbled underneath the weight of their responsibility. Or proved to be incompetent to deal with their tasks.
This man, however, caused a faint shiver to run down Asami's spine. She was confident that he would prove no threat for her in an equal fight. But she doubted he was the kind of man that would fight fair.
"I may have acquired a certain reputation. However, I must state that I have no loyalty or pledged any fealty to the Sixth Raikage. I followed the Fifth and then my clan."
"Ah, so I understand that correctly," Mareo responded only to pause afterwards. "Honestly, we aren't interested if you hold any loyalty to the Sixth Raikage. Your actions proved to be in the benefit of the realm. That is more important than to follow some masked individual that claimed he could pose a threat to the Regency." The smile of before returned as Mareo's eyes slightly narrowed.
"No, miss Sanosuke, I am more interested in other matters. Such as the whereabouts of the jinchuriki or Bijuu. A topic that I was told you're an expert on."
And there it was, Asami thought to herself. She had expected that the new regime wanted to locate and utilise the jinchuriki. And for a moment, Asami found it quite amusing. If Reyna and Midori only knew what was going on. Then again, Asami doubted that either girl would appreciate the risk Asami was going to take.
"The jinchuriki and tamer of the Hachibi is residing in the far North, Lord Hojo," Asami said, imperceptibly raising her chin as she spoke, "She remains with her clan and their Sanosuke allies. If I recall correctly, Lord Fifth arranged that she wouldn't be forced to continue fighting once he would resign. One way or another that is."
It remained silent as Mareo observed Asami.
"And may I ask, is it correct that you have interacted with this Tamer of the Hachibi? I reckon that the past Lord Fifth had his reasons for such a decision, but our rivals and enemies have powerful people. Jinchuuriki even. It would be most unwise not to use ours if we can." Mareo paused, only to then shake his head lightly. "I have little faith in utilising jinchuuriki and the chaos that they seem to bring with them. But they can provide a powerful deterrent. Certainly, one that has tamed their bijuu, if that isn't some fairy tale. I hope you can confirm or not."
"Midori Sato has somewhat tamed her beast," Asami decided to say after pondering, for a moment, what she knew. "In terms of her combat abilities and experience? I wouldn't wager too much on it. She has proven herself to be resilient but lacking in the cold efficiency of killers that others have at her rank. Her control of the Hachibi is... not what I would describe as tamed. The beast has still large sway but seems to have grown a certain loyalty to her. I fear that has it's positive and negatives."
The answer that Asami provided didn't seem to satisfy Mareo that much. A frown on the man's brow grew as he appeared to weigh in the information.
"And what would happen if we were to extract the beast and place it in a more suitable host? One that would provide more talent for combat and controlling the monster?" Mareo opted to ask.
Asami didn't let her emotions surface when she received the question. A question she had pondered once herself upon experiencing what the Saviour of Kumogakure was; nothing more than a girl that was repeatedly thrown into the cold world they all tried to survive in.
"I reckon that we can find a host that is easily more combat able than Midori Sato. However, I doubt it will be an improvement," Asami mentally sighed as she realised that she once more held sway over someone's life - while they weren't present.
"But I fear that the Hachibi will revolt. Violently if it realises, that could mean the death of Midori Sato. I reckon it can be restrained, but it will be an uphill battle to utilise it in another host."
Once more, Asami's answer didn't seem to satisfy the Hojo lord. Mareo kept frowning, but he didn't provide any questions to follow right away. His stare almost seemed to probe and prod at Asami, as if he wanted to be sure that the woman spoke the truth.
"That is unfortunate. Then we can for now leave the Tamer of the Eight in the far north. I hope that her clan will send her if we call for her. But what of the Three-Tails and its jinchuriki? We have questioned the Sixth Raikage, but it seems that the Lord Fifth was fond of keeping quite some secrets."
Realising that they didn't know about who the Three-Tails was, Asami once more missed the Fifth Raikage. Sure, he wasn't the type of company she favoured - his constant abuse of the word fascinating whenever he got intrigued was more than mildly agitating. But it seemed that the Lord Fifth had predicted that a power struggle would occur over the jinchuriki. And now she reckoned that nearly all that knew Reyna was the Three-Tails host were dead or willing to keep it a secret.
"I wouldn't know, Lord Hojo," Asami said, doing her utmost best not to let her voice shift. "I have only dealt with the Eight-Tails host, not the Three-Tails. Lord Fifth must have arranged someone else for that," Asami said, resisting the urge to smirk.
"Quite a pity, truly," Mareo said, not hiding his discontent at the fact Asami didn't seem to know. "We were hoping you would know. But it seems that we are forced to recall mister Kaizen back from his mission. Maybe he knows." Mareo seems to consider something. His frown then was once more replaced with a soft smile adorning his features.
"Ah yes, now we have been wondering about something else. Did you not state that you never pledged loyalty to Lord Sixth? Wouldn't that make you a northern kunoichi without a master? Or do you serve your clan?"
Asami's mood rapidly changed. She realised that she could find her best way out of the military here and now by stating that she was pledged to one of the Sanosuke jarls. Even if it was a lie at first, she was confident that most if not all Sanosuke leaders would welcome her services. But that did mean that Reyna was going to be defenceless. And nobody to prevent the Hojo clutches to suffocate her and extract her beast.
"I have been in the service of my people and clan during the civil strife. But with the conclusion of it, I have been hoping to return to the military. Preferably to stay in the field as I have no interest to offer my services directly to the Sixth Raikage, Lord Hojo."
"And what if you were to be assigned to the Daimyo's forces? Someone with your reputation could serve us much better than the Sixth Raikage. We have already recruited the other competent people from his service, to ensure that their talents are put to actual use." Mareo swiftly replied, subtly gesturing to the figure behind the curtain.
"His Majesty would be most pleased to let you continue your fieldwork if it is done in his name. What say you?"
There was something that caused Asami's stomach to twist and turn. She even considered throwing Midori and Reyna at the mercy of the Hojo clan. Serving the Daimyo was something she felt a vile thing. Her pride twisted and almost tangibly revolted within her body as she considered the decision. But what was the alternative? It seemed that if she wanted to prevent any harm befalling Midori or Reyna, she was forced to say yes.
"I would be most honoured, my lords."
The sound of two hands clapping twice resonated, sounding odd in the hall, after Asami's answer. "Good. Then we hope you'll not mind going eastwards. We want to be certain that the conflict is handled properly. And someone with your experience can ensure that."
Asami wanted to narrow her eyes and spit towards the Hojo. She even considered to end the Hojo domination right here and now. But the number of guards were too many. And she was confident that these guards weren't just soldiers - but containing shinobi among their numbers. Gritting her teeth, Asami made a small bow with her head.
"I shall see to it, my lords."
[ Operation: 'Sweet Arrival' Part 1]
[ Team Republic 19 ]
[ A collaboration between @SilverPaw , @BlueFlameNikku and @Lesli ]
[ The team is instructed to travel to the Honey country, a vassal state of the Republic. Not much news has been received about the status of the vassal state. Despite whatever the team feels or thinks about the mission; they are assigned to a ship that heads to one of the Honey's ports. Their journey, however, isn't going too smoothly. ]
The journey had gone well, so far. The waves that the vessel pierced through were calm and provided nearly nothing of an obstacle. On board the Kaimon, there wasn't an awful lot to do. The captain of the ship usually assigned small tasks to the likes of Sugi and Sana but seemed to be wary of Neime. The Hayashi was most content with the situation, clearly minding herself - starting with the ritual to inspect her gear at the dawn of every day.
The sound of drums softly resonated as the oars kept propelling the ship forwards, breaking through the waves. On deck, there were the occasional marine - which were either shinobi or soldiers. They were of older ages than Team Hayashi and held a professional distance with most. Though at some evenings a few of the marines formed small groups to play some dice games. Gambling with either coins or best parts of the rations.
With the days slowly passing them, Neime had considered doing some simple training. But the truth was that she enjoyed the rigid rhythm and fact that they couldn't attend to much beyond simple focus training or providing a helping hand on deck.
On the dawn of evening, as the sky turned dark and they would huddle together to eat some bland rations, Neime decided to speak up.
"I am going to teach you both a way," the Hayashi began, "on how to slowly get a better hang of your chakra control. It is technically also one of the ways to try to master a new element. But," Neime quickly added, "that is for later."
During the voyage thus far, when Sugi wasn't given a remedial task aboard the ship, he was working on creating codes and hand signals with the help of Sana and likely showing them to Neime for review now and again. Thanks to his decent practice at painting the genin was able to draw up coherent images for the hand signs and would write what they meant just beneath them in code. Just like Sana had suggested, he'd start to only write down in his notebook in code from now on, somewhat coming up as he went along. At times his mind would drift off and he'd think more on his team leader. Having never enjoyed the stuffy attitude and obvious selfishness of most higher ups, Sugi was unsure of what to think of Neime. She was a Hayashi after all but...didn't act like he expected. Sure she seemed cut and dry more times than not but she actually gave a damn and that meant a fair deal.
Sugi didn't mingle much with the crew. Most of them being quite a bit older than himself posed a bit of a barrier but he was courteous and usually did his best to not get in anyone's way while onboard. Occasionally, he would watch a couple rounds of the marines gambling here and there but not much else beyond that. He'd rather keep the best parts of his rations with no strings attached and would rather not cheat less he get caught.
Sugi would perk up at Neime's remark as the three sat and ate, immediately catching his interest.. He made sure to speak in between bites so as to no talk with his mouth full. "Sounds good to me. Is this gonna be a type of chakra flow exercise or something more hands on?" He asked curiously, even more curious of the later implications of this.
During the journey, Sana spent a lot of time observing the passing sea, enjoying the breeze, hanging around with Sugi to help him with the codes and signals, and watching the gambling marines as she tried to learn their games via observation. Though it wasn't something she'd considered joining herself - not at all keen to lose money or rations - it was a way to spend time and entertain herself. She also went through some minor training exercises in the mornings and evenings, and sometimes during the day if here was time. She had some tasks to accomplish, of course, but nothing major. It was honestly fairly boring, though each time she felt so, Sana reminded herself that a peaceful situation was good and exactly what anyone should hope for. The reminder helped...most of the time.
One evening as they were eating, their senpai addressed them, and Sana immediately perked up at the chuunin's suggestion. "Oh? Better chakra control is always a good idea," she said. Though it was a skill she was known for among the genin, she certainly wanted to continue getting better at it. Truthfully, she wouldn't oppose getting better at anything, but sharpening an already decent skill in hopes of attaining mastery was an especially fulfilling endeavor. "Whatever it is, I want to learn it. And I will keep in mind what you said about learning another element, senpai" she commented.
Chewing on a bite as she gave some time for the genin to reply, Neime was satisfied with the fact that both genin were seemingly interested. "Good." Neime said as she would consider where to start.
"It is a type of chakra flow. Short version? I will teach you how to get better at moulding your chakra and keeping it in control. It isn't that exciting but it will help in the long run in moulding chakra into a specific nature as mastering your grasp on controlling it in general."
Letting that information sink for a moment, Neime raised her right index-finger, to emphasize the imminent warning. "While it is relatively simple to understand, exercise and nothing too exciting. It isn't without some danger. Lose your focus, get too excited or have something happen to disrupt you in whatever way? You'll lose control of your chakra. And no matter what nature you were moulding inside your body, it will feel like you're burning from the inside. Someone has to then insert their chakra and try to combat the distortion. Some people get lucky or are experienced enough to recover from it themselves. But if a person suffers long enough, it may damage your chakra system to the point you won't be able to mould chakra."
Once more, the Hayashi let the warning sink in. She had little doubt that they wouldn't pay attention. What had Neime worried was the mere fact that if it would go wrong, it could have lasting effects.
"You both know your element, right? As you also may have been taught, each element has two hand signs that share a certain affinity with it. For example," pointing at herself with her thumb, Neime continued, "Scorch is my elemental affinity. It is largely based on Fire. Which means that to do this kind of training, I need to use Ram or Tiger."
Making the Tiger handseal, Neime continued explaining the training further. "Once you make the handsign, you focus on moulding your chakra. The purpose is to guide and control your chakra. Keep it inside yourself and stay focused. If it goes wrong," Neime flashed a smile, "I will try to interject. Any questions?"
Sugi listened attentively to how the exercise was performed along with the warning. It did sound simple enough and the genin had no desire to mess it up. He'd happily pass on the feeling of his chakra burning his insides. His mind did wonder on how it felt to have a double affinity like Neime had, to be naturally attuned to two chakra to the point of being able to utilize a whole new element. He felt it was like having extra pieces in a game of shogi. Then judging from what Sana said she was already well versed in chakra control. Looking inward back to himself he didn't have anything like his squadmates did. He felt...painfully average in this moment as he sat there. Letting his expression slip for just a moment into a slight frown before returning to a more neutral expression.
The boy was well aware of his affinity towards the water element and its most relevant handseal. It was the most common where they were from which didn't help his current feeling of inadequacy. The genin put his food down to one side and spoke up. "I don't have any questions, least not yet. I'd like to give it a try right now."
Sugi added as he placed his left hand flat over his right fist making the rat seal, one of the simplest hand signs by a large margin. He sat still in silence, crossed legged about the wooden floor of the swaying ship. He got into a rhythm of breathing that resonated with the rocking of the ship and the splashing of sea water against its sides. Focusing on moulding his chakra, he envisioned his chakra as if it were a sea within himself. After a few moments of this exercise the two could see Sugi fidget a little bit. A few small smatterings of chakra would start to leave his body. He wouldn't let himself panic however even as he felt the sea of chakra within him start to churn aggressively like the beginning of a storm, a slight burn starting up in his stomach. He kept his cool and did his best to prevent things from getting any worse. Keeping his breath steady and slow Sugi filtered out everything from his senses. The sounds of the sea, the chatter of crewmembers even the feeling of the damp wood he was sitting on. A single bead of sweat dripped down his forehead while he managed to keep anymore chakra from leaking out and stop the burning from getting worse though it was still there like a bad case of heartburn.
Sana listened alongside her team-mate carefully, nodding when appropriate to show her understanding. "I have no questions either," she replied before crossing her legs and assuming the meditation position. She placed her hands in the monkey hand seal, observing to make sure it was correct and taking a moment to feel the most minute of feelings, so that if she slipped even a millimeter while her eyes were closed, she would immediately realize it. Then, her eyelids felt shut and her breaths deepend.
Having had some experience with mediation, she swiftly found her inner calm. For her, it was the solitude, quiet, and peace of winter days. Perhaps not quite congruent with her lightning nature, but it didn't truly matter. As long as she was centered and focused, it was simple enough to begin chakra moulding. Much more difficult was to not use it. The process of converting that inner spark into lightning chakra was almost automatic, since she used it to coat her blade so often. As such, Sana had to expend the most effort to keep it actively moulding. It was tricky, and she felt a gradually building tingle that could at any moment manifest into an outburst of chakra. Inhaling deeply, the genin added several thunderclouds to her mental image, the previously bright scenery darkening somewhat. She thought about distant, rumbling thunder - the sign of a distant storm that wouldn't manifest where she was.
It helped to think of her chakra as such; a contained beginning that could at any moment extend into being, yet did not have to if she didn't let it. However, despite her progress, keeping the chakra moulding in such a way was unusual enough to be rather exhausting. Far-off, she felt sweat bead on her forehead and nose, a drop of it running down her face. Yet, she could not let such a thing distract her if she wanted to be successful. Keeping up her steady breaths, Sana continued the exercise for as long as she was able. Actually...she was somewhat unsure how to safely dissipate the moulded chakra once she was too tired to continue, but that wasn't something she could afford to let herself worry about. Knowing their leader was in the vicinity helped with that. She did feel the occasional flickering heat in her body, but she did not let it consume her, and beat it back, keeping her chakra steady and stable. It was mentally tasking, and the last time she'd felt like this was probably when her father had once again insisted on a shogi match. She comforted herself with the thought that this was relatively simple to that endeavor - chakra control was something she was supposedly good after all. So, even if she was working up a sweat, her body on the brink of trembling, and her chakra vying for control, she could do this.
Finding it endearing, in a certain way, that the genin were quick to start Neime just paid attention. She remembered her first time attempting this sort of training. It was in no way challenging to get started. The real obstacle was to maintain control and stop when enough was enough.
Keeping a close eye on the two, time would drift by slowly for the Hayashi. There wasn't much joy watching two genin train and sweat in such a manner. At least, Neime found no joy in it.
Observing Sugi, Neime's eyebrows slightly perked up. If anything, Neime wasn't surprised that the movement of the ship didn't throw the boy off. Seeing that he lived by the docks, there was a good chance that he had likely some fishing or sailing experience. Content with how he held up, Neime shifted her gaze to Sana.
The girl had shown a more composed side, so far Neime could understand. And their spar had shown that Sana knew some chakra flow - which indicated at a genin level that she was decent at chakra control. Or in any case, at least.
Yet, Sana didn't seem to be in perfect harmony. Not that Neime detected any reason to intervene yet. The trembling of the girl's body wasn't, after all, a weird occurrence on the first attempt of this training.
Leaning slightly backwards Neime released a sigh.
Shifting her gaze to Mamoru and then Madoc the girl paced a bit before squatting down near the Yamanaka, "I don't like waiting here while something is happening." she stated to no one in particular before she trained her eyes back in the direction of the people that Madoc had sensed.
Nice and easy, Meilin sent other people to go investigate and all he had to do was keep track on them. Of course he kept listening to his surroundings, just cause he was scanning didn't mean he wasn't capable of looking around and talking. Aoi voiced her dislike for sitting around doing nothing which he chuckled at. "Can't agree there. That's my favorite activity, SADLY, you all keep making me do dangerous things." Madoc said before looking at Mamoru who said something about age and when he looked the kid was checking out a tree.
Madoc stared at him for a bit before whistling. "Wowwww you really need to get laid dude." Madoc stated as he returned to keeping tabs on the two girls before they vanished. Tilting his head as they shouldn't be out of his range, he did it again and sure enough they popped back up, as did another and then like six more and then….. huh.
Standing up Madoc looked at Meilin seemingly pondering what he saw. "So bad news and horrific news. Bad news is Dagrun is having fun. Horrific news is that like fifty plus men are about to go and kill everyone at the meeting."
Staring into the direction where Dagrún and Hylli had ventured, Meilin had remained quiet. There was a slight shift in her facial expression - disdain as the others continued to talk. But Meilin remained silent, waiting for Madoc to report anything noteworthy.
When she noticed Madoc rising in the corner of her peripheral vision, Meilin twisted her head slightly.
"Everyone, ready up. We move to the meeting," the Cho shouted as she would move her gloved hands together. Weaving through the necessary handsigns, Meilin inhaled deeply before looking at the sky.
Exhaling, the young woman would blast various balls of fire into the air - the subsequent incendiary explosions quite visible as audible.
Turning to the direction where Hylli and Dagrún had ventured, Meilin bit her lower lip for a moment. "Aoi, Madoc," Meilin shot a look at the two as the rest of the platoon started to rush towards the meeting point. "Try to get to Dagrún and Hylli. If they are hurt, get out and stay low. Or else regroup at the meeting point."
Her nerves to frayed to even smirk at Madoc's comment on Mamoru needing to get laid, Aoi once more stood up and began to pace incessantly. When the Yamanaka stood up she immediately stopped where she stood and listened as he warned Meilin of the quite large group approaching the meeting.
With those words Aoi felt a sense of relief washing over her. The waiting was over, the fight was on. A familiar feeling of focus took her mind and her body tingled with the anticipation as it prepared itself for the fight at hand.
"Come on then Madoc, doubt that Dagrún needs our help but that new one may actually need us." she quipped before turning and beginning to run toward the direction of the two Chonobi at a slow enough pace for Madoc to quickly catch up to her.
Mamoru gave the Yamanaka a puzzled look to his remark, than it clicked. He kept forgetting about Madoc's ability, but this time, it only made him chuckle.I hate you, he thought, still chuckling. Shaking his head as Madoc reported his horrifying news, the smile on his lips was immediately replaced by focus as he awaited orders. With a slight sense of awe, he observed Meilin performing her technique. As Madoc and Aoi were called out and given orders, he expected his name as well. His expectations were not met and as Aoi rushed off, followed by Madoc, he simply moved closer to Meilin. Not saying a single word, he just gave her a nod symbolizing he was ready for orders to be given. He clenched his fists as his eyes darted between the direction of the meeting and his Lieutenant.
Hearing they were going to the meeting he gave a reluctant nod, which turned to a sigh as Aoi and himself however were told to go get Dagrun and Hylli out of there. "We are more in danger of trying to pry Dagrun away from having fun." Madoc mumbled before grabbing his pack and taking off with Aoi towards their location. As they traveled he kept an eye on their location and whistled to himself and Aoi. "So…. I know im like great and skilled and all that. I'm not great enough to fend or piss off like sixty plus peo- fifty nine people."
Madoc then looked at her and shrugged. "Well worse case you grab Hylli and I forcibly grab Dagrun."
[ Empire of Akino | Fire Province - Vindex, the capital of the Tokugawa Clan ]
[ Yone Tsuji of Amegakure Team 22 ]
[ Operation: Terrible Dread ]
Part 1
It had taken quite some time to get used to how things in Vindex went. For someone native from Amegakure and who had seen little of the world outside the Rain's capital, Vindex was a strange phenomenon. During her stay and search, Yone had realised that it wasn't just one culture that resided in the city. Several cultural groups lived and seemed to coexist together, underneath firm but benign Tokugawa rule.
The largest group seemed to be the Tokugawa themselves. Their language was luckily still Taika if only having a small accent - compared to someone out of Amegakure. But it seemed that the only similarity was the language. For the Tokugawa traditions, clothing and manners were vastly different.
They seemed to be more laidback when it came to traditional roles, with a more considerable margin of women owning shops and working - than one would see in Amegakure. There seemed a particular emphasis on status as well, as commoners were forbidden to wear specific colours or garbs - all reserved for the privileged. Their manners seemed less reserved than Yone was used to - something she had struggled with at the start but was starting to take a liking to. In Amegakure, people held some reservation and distance when interacting. In Vindex or what Yone had seen between Tokugawa; they seemed more eager and friendly in exchanges.
Then there were the Yakimara. A small group but yet present within Vindex. Yone didn't understand much of them and had quite some difficulty to understand what went on. She had learned that the Yakimara seemed to be a collective of clans and tribes - which the Yamanaka and Nara seemed to be most dominant in Vindex. Their language sounded much like a sort of singing - friendly and easygoing. They were making Yone curious if she could learn and master the language once she would be back in Amegakure.
The Yakimara residing in Vindex were most hospitable. The shops and workplaces that Yone visited had a different feel to them. What seemed to be the case was that in many more establishments - notably the pubs and inns, there were was the presence of musicians that played soothing music.
Much to Yone's dismay, however, the trail didn't lead to the Yakimara.
Another group that lived in Vindex were the Chonobi. They were folk that Yone had heard of. Warlike, unfriendly, reserved and belligerent; Yone wasn't keen on exploring the few districts in which the Chonobi resided.
Their language wasn't similar to the Yakimara; it was short and gave a crude or else cold tone. More often than not, Yone felt like someone sneered at her when she heard them speak Chonobi.
The manners and clothing were vastly different, and discovering their ways was a bigger culture shock. For the roles between men and women seemed to be less precise. Several times, she had witnessed women being in charge of establishments and quickly holding as much authority as the men. A bit timid by this all, Yone hesitated to investigate the Chonobi folk in Vindex further. But remembering that Mitsunari had entrusted this solely to her, Yone continued.
Only after attempting to understand the Chonobi, she learned that they weren't one folk and clan. Much like the Yakimara, there were distinct groups within Vindex. The largest group seemed to be Hons; which were quite 'loud' in Yone's opinion. They seemed the friendliest and less reserved but occupied various professions that seemed martial of spirit and purpose.
The second largest group were Cho; a folk that were more reserved and seemed focused on business. Despite Yone's best efforts to investigate them, she couldn't get to know much else than a few of their manners. If anything, they did stand out with the fact they seemed capable to demand the respect of the other Chonobi clans within Vindex.
The smallest group belonged to the Sarutobi. More than the Cho, the Sarutobi was closed off and seemed less keen to interact with outsiders. Yone disliked them the most, at the start, due to the fact it was hard to do any business with them. They seemed to harbour little interest for small talk, let alone to answer various 'innocent' questions.
Luckily, the trail didn't seem to pick further up with the Chonobi.
Sitting on a bench, Yone considered her options. She had managed to catch some hints that the Amekage killer was finding refuge inside Vindex. And, so far, she had managed to remain incognito as well - earning some coin by doing small tasks for various merchants. Such as delivering small packages or messages, from one to another.
Kicking a pebble away, Yone considered to give up. What was she thinking, after all? That she, a mere genin, could live up to the expectations of the Lord Commander of Amegakure?
Releasing a sigh, the girl wondered what else she could do. The trail that she could chase wasn't that promising anymore. She practically had learned nothing new yet.
"Maybe, I should go home," Yone mused to herself as she leaned backwards. Glancing at the clear blue sky, she had to admit that another thought was quite alluring as well.
"Staying here, however, doesn't seem so bad. It smells nicer than Amegakure, in most parts," Yone further thought. Only to force herself to focus.
"Okay, so the killer is hiding in Vindex. They have been laying low, so where could they be? I can rule out the Yakimara and Chonobi communities. Little chance that the culprit hides there. And if they do, then there is no chance I can find them."
Frowning, Yone placed her hands behind her head as she continued to ponder.
"The only lead I got is investigating some gangs. But that seems a tad risky. Not to mention, if I tackle it wrong or make mistakes, the killer will learn of my presence. Either then fleeing again or trying to kill me. And I don't think I can face a Kage-killer one on one..."
Growing more frustrated Yone bite her lower lip. She was stuck at the crossroads of taking an important decision and without anybody to provide advice. Was this what high-ranked nin went through? Did Mitsunari-sama think she was capable of pulling this off?
Then something ran past her thought.
"Wait a second...."
Team 19 Meeting!
[ Empire of Akino | Imperial Rain Province - Amegakure, the provincial capital ]
[ Team 19 - Ferra Arkos | A collaboration done by Team 19 | Ferra rallies her team to participate into a meet and greet-esque event. While there is some hesitation among the participating students, Ferra continues to motivate them. With the team continuing to partake in Ferra's event, they soon are put to a certain test...]
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Watching how the students reacted, Ferra collected another heavy ball from the ground. Rini's shield had broken, which caused the Jounin to wonder how the other students might see it. Would they understand what it meant? Only time would tell. Sidestepping to her left, Ferra dodged the thrown ball of Kuni's before spotting the kicked ball. Moving quickly, she contorted herself, spinning out of the way and sending her own heavy ball flying back towards Kuni in one smooth motion.
She made a mental note about the move. It was not one she had seen, nor was it one that would work in a real match of Godai. The fact they were using simple balls however, led to certain options that didn't exist in a real match...
As Ferra dodged her first thrown ball, Kuni glanced to Megumi, seeing a ball being thrown towards her. She jumped to the right, letting the ball miss her, before seeing Ferra's second dodge also sent a heavy ball towards her. She barely managed to raise her own shield in time, knocking the edge of the shield against the ball. It sent the ball with a curve upwards, which hit Kuni's shoulder.
Feeling the hit and cursing under her breath, she knew it meant that she was pushed back now. She raised her arms as a signal that she was out for the current round, before running to the side of the field.
Megumi watched as Ferra dodged and threw a ball in one fluid motion. The woman definitely was skilled and it showed. As her own ball was dodged she saw as the jounins hit Kuni, pushing her back and out of the current round. If the genin kept them distracted with her own attacks it seemed the pair would win, Ferra taking every advantage of the openings. Deciding to set her shield down she grabbed a small ball in each hand. She already was one tap from being pushed back, and if she did get focused by Rini, Ferra could have the opening for the round. Without much hesitation Megumi sent the balls flying, first the one from her left then from her right. The two aimed at Rini's legs.
Clicking with her tongue, Rini narrowed her eyes. She didn't spend much time to see what happened to Kuni. Quickly moving with a roll to the side, Rini evaded the throws of Megumi. With no shield, however, Rini was hesitant to return the attack.
Readying herself for another barrage, Rini bit on her lower lip.
Picking up another heavy ball, Ferra kept an eye on how Rini reacted now that her partner was gone. She did not go on the offensive, which was interesting, but also meant that Rini would be unable to defeat them unless she shifted her approach. Making note of how the girl dodged Megumi's attack, Ferra launched her own ball towards Rini's midsection, picking up a light ball as she continued to move.
The first to respond was Ferra, which sparked Rini to wait for a second. Only at the nick of time did the chuunin manage to dodge the ball with stepping aside - her gaze as attention trying to keep a hold of both opposing jounin and genin.
Feeling winded Rini narrowed her eyes. "Tch."
Despite the assault Rini was still dodging every attack the pair made. Looking at the balls she had remaining, Megumi knew she wouldn't get many good throws in with the heavier ones. She had one light one remaining. Picking up one of the heavier orbs, she held it in her hands. Getting her balance she took position to throw it. The object leaving her hands fast but losing speed as it flew. As it reached the chuunin it was lower towards the ground and it would be a miracle if it made contact. It was all she had for now, wanting to save the last light ball by her feet.
Taking note of everything going on, Ferra skidded to a halt and held up one hand. "Enough," she said, her tone firm but not harsh. Glancing towards the students, she nodded for a moment. "Not terrible for your first time, but we've got a lot of work to do to get you in proper fighting shape." Looking at the ball in her hands, Ferra flowed a small amount of chakra into it and then released her grip, using her technique to cause it to float in the air, performing gentle circles. Folding her arms across her chest, the Jounin's tone shifted slightly. "Godai is an intense sport, but it is nothing quite like the chaos of a real battle." Turning her attention towards Megumi first, Ferra provided her assessment. "You adapted well to the situation and tried several different strategies which helps to keep your opponents off guard. However, you will need to work on your stamina as I did not see you moving around too much. You relied fairly heavily on your shield until you saw Rini's break. In an actual combat scenario, you need to be more fluid with your movements. Standing still will make you an open target. Overall, you did a good job at reading your partner's tactics and trying to adjust." Shifting her attention to Kuni next, Ferra raised one eyebrow slightly.
"Kuni..." she began, "Not a great start for you in this one. You need to show more awareness for your surroundings and adjust accordingly. You came up with an interesting strategy, with kicking the ball to try and catch us off guard. I want to see more of that kind of thinking. Act outside the box if you have to, but don't be afraid to engage more. In a real fight, if you allow yourself to get caught off guard as much as you did in this practice, you or your teammates will end up on the wrong side of a blade. I respect the honesty you showed in admitting when you were hit, but we've got some work to do on getting you more focused." Finally, Ferra turned her gaze to Rini, pausing for a moment before she would offer her assessment of the girl. "You showed some good instincts, however, I must admit I'm uncertain whether to be pleased that you went to your partner's aid almost immediately, or disappointed that you did not focus on taking out the target while their attention was focused elsewhere." The ball continued circling in the air beside her and Ferra chewed her lip in thought. "It is admirable that you wanted to protect your teammate, but your actions may have put Kuni more at risk. While you did make her a slightly harder to hit target by forcing her to stay on the ground, it also meant she could no longer move with the same degree of flexibility. All it would have taken was for Megumi and I to flank both sides and we could have eliminated Kuni even earlier. Have a little more faith in your teammates and focus on the greater threat. Until that is out of the way, you're always going to be operating on the defensive otherwise. Your reactions and movements were very good for the most part, however. With some more training, you'd make a talented Godai player."
Reaching out her hand, she allowed the ball to fall into her palm. Staring at it for a moment, she nodded once more before glancing around at her students. "Despite some areas of concern, you lot aren't the worst bunch I've seen. For now, go home and get some rest. We begin proper training tomorrow."
Once Ferra stated that they were done, Rini felt like falling on her rear to recover her breath. She had already dreaded that it would go on. Attempting to keep her back straight Rini listened as Ferra spoke.
She didn't really care much about Ferra's statements about Kuni or Megumi. She wasn't envious of either. But when Ferra began over her, Rini stared at the jounin.
The starting compliments had little effect as the jounin continued to berate her. Her lips slightly parted as the teenish rebellious side of Rini was at the ready to verbally lunge back at Ferra. To clarify that she knew exactly what she was doing. That she had outlasted more jounin than Megumi had done missions. That if Kuni was so worthless that it was her fault.
But no words of anger or spite left Rini's lips. She clenched them on each other and slightly lowered her head, keeping to herself.
Getting up slowly Rini only realised as she was about to leave that she still clenched a grip on a ball. Dropping it, she wouldn't care that she had started to leave a small imprint due to her tight gripping.
Watching the remainder of the match from the side was interesting, and while she wanted to cheer for Rini, Kuni elected not to. It would've probably caused a distraction. It didn't take much longer, and then Ferra called the match for an end. Coming closer to the rest, Kuni listened to what Ferra had to say.
She started with Megumi, giving her both the good and bad, but in a constructive way. Then she moved onto her, apparently wanting to see more of how she can think outside the box, but that she needed to allow herself to be caught off guard less. Nodding, Kuni also listened to the notes Ferra had for Rini. When they were dismissed, Kuni nodded again "Okay. See you all tomorrow." She said, before turning and beginning to run out of the building.
Taking in what Ferra said she nodded and smiled softly. "Thank you for the feedback sensei. I will make sure to improve my stamina and try not to be a still target." It would take her some time to adapt to not taking a more swordsman approach but she was sure she could find a way to blend both styles of combat. Megumi watched as her team left, wondering if they were upset or just tired. She was tempted to follow but decided not to as she looked to the jounin and gave a bow before leaving herself. The genin was curious what their next training exercise would be.
Raising an eyebrow as Megumi bowed, Ferra responded with a slight nod of her head. As her students left, she glanced down at the ball in her hand, her eyes narrowing.
[ Amegakure | Capital of the Rain Province | Akinian Empire ]
[ Sho Deshuga | ex-chuunin of the Akinian military ]
Sho stared at the spectacle in front of him. The circular pit, which had various dark stains on the ground. The crowd that surrounded the fence or sat on the high benches, looking down as two combatants attempted to win their bloody fight.
Despite never having cared for any animal, Sho felt his stomach twisting. The sight of the two large canines lunging at each other's neck, attempting to get a good grip and rip the throat of the other, was disgusting. It was somehow different than any fight he had been in; he had fought for fun, to humiliate his opponent or because they were a danger to him or the mission.
This? This was different.
Two animals starved, enslaved and forced to fight in a deathmatch while a crowd created an atmosphere, unlike any battle Sho had experienced. It was wrong.
Throwing a subtle look, he saw that she looked back at him. Turning his gaze back at the dogfight, Sho tried to shake the dread from his shoulders in a most casual way.
The last few days, he had been working together with 'Yoru'. Ever since their first meeting, Sho had a constant feeling of dread and suspicion around the woman, which was quite odd. She did precisely everything she said; not lying or tricking him ever since he had agreed to work for her.
And her pay? Was easily triple what he earned in the military. Allowing Sho to bail out his mother - because well, it would be just annoying him.
The whimper of one of the dogs resonated, somehow reaching Sho's ears despite the briefly deafening mixture of cheers and shouts of disappointment and anger. One of the dogs, the larger of the two, clamped its jaws around the neck of its opponent. Pinning his foe down, the larger of the two dogs started to shake his head violently - the sharp teeth ripping skin and flesh apart.
"What do you think?"
Sho's eyes briefly widened, but he refused to turn his head and look at Yoru. Crossing his arms out front of his chest, he shrugged.
"I don't care for some mutts tearing each other apart," he said, his tone reflecting certain boredom. "unless I have to clean it. Then damn those mongrels."
But as he finished, he saw how the larger dog started to dig his fangs once more into his opponent. While life started to fleet from the wounded combatant, the victor had little moral qualms to begin eating his opponent alive - much to the joy of some among the public.
"I find it a waste of good potential," Yoru's voice continued, somehow despite being soft reaching Sho's ears. "With some more training and guidance, it could have been a worthy guard dog. Now? It is served merely the purpose to be entertainment. Dying as a starving... mongrel, as you put it."
Sho slightly raised his chin. He couldn't shake the thoughts from his mind. Was she testing him? Trying to probe him? No, he couldn't give a fuck about those idiots and their sick games.
"Nothing? Ah, well, perhaps for the better. Cause you're next."
Sho slowly turned his head. A frown formed on his brow as he locked his gaze upon the woman that stood next to him. Her features were obscured by that stupid hood and the annoying dark. Much like how it was covered continuously. Was she that ugly or vain that she somehow managed to always cast a shadow over her features?
"You want me to kill a dog?" Sho asked his tone a mixture of mockery and rising anger.
"A dog? Oh no, sweetie. You're going to kill another person."
And for the first time, he could see two eyes. Eyes that shook Sho to his core; for they were cold and stripped his facade away.
Eyes that held no ounce of mercy or hesitation to strike if he would decline.
He couldn't believe it. Standing in the dark, he felt the annoying collar around his neck - that suppressed his ability to mould chakra actively. The sounds outside the cage were muffled, but he was well aware of what was being said. A herald was speaking to the crowd, exciting them up to place bets and 'informing' them of what next fight was to occur.
The smell of dried blood and excreta filled Sho's nostrils, making him feel nauseous, and pissing him further off.
The cage started to rattle slightly, causing Sho to try to peer through the dark. Then without warning, light erupted through an opening as the enclosure was being tilted - forcing him to slide to space.
Landing on his feet, Sho couldn't help but freeze. The atmosphere was intimidating; the shouting of the crowd, the realisation that he was standing in the pit where he had watched dogs tear each other apart.
His gaze caught the sight of his opponent. A young man that was taller and sported broader shoulders than him. The various visible scars on Sho's foe seemed to indicate that he had survived fights before.
Raising his fists, Sho tried to focus his mind; to erase the intimidation. To fully realise; he was to fight for his life.
Pain shot through his jaw as a punch connected. His opponent threw another one. Before Sho was aware of it, he was on his back - gasping for air as his vision shifted from clear to blurry with various spots visible.
Managing to roll away from his opponent, Sho quickly got on his feet. Ignoring the blood that started to gush from his nose, anger began to rise within the young man. The pent-up aggression for what he had to endure before; the judgment of countless people, the fact some jackasses treated him like dirt and being associated with his father.
Releasing a battle cry, Sho lunged at his foe. Despite his smaller frame, his punches landed and had some effect. Seeing his opponent reeling, Sho continued his onslaught. The vibrations and aching from his fists made him aware that he was hitting the other. And briefly, Sho was thankful that the guy wasn't some jackass that was willing to sustain damage.
Feeling something at his side, Sho realised that his opponent managed to dish a punch back. And for a short while, the two just continued their brutal dance - taking damage, only to try to dish it back harder.
Fresh blood started to drip on the dirty ground as the two combatants seemed to lose themselves in their fight.
Feeling two hands grabbing him by the neck, Sho grunted. Forced to look down, he saw how his opponent attempted to slam a knee against Shp's stomach. Another numb shot of sensation rang through Sho, as he calmly let the knee hit - only to hook an arm behind the leg.
Before his opponent could attempt something back, Sho kicked the standing leg of his foe and used his weight to drag them both to the ground. Only to try to add his strength to make his opponent smack harder against the surface.
Feeling the pain shooting through his shoulder, Sho barred his teeth. As his opponent released his grip, the much more agile Sho didn't hesitate. Lost in his fury, Sho positioned himself over his foe. To barrage his competitor with punches, aimed at the throat and head.
More cheers erupted from the crowd, pleased with the sight of the underdog managing to outmanoeuvre his larger combatant. But Sho didn't register anything from the public. Every punch gave him some odd satisfaction. Every vibration and pain that ran through his hands made him aware that he was alive.
Slamming another punch into the throat of his foe, Sho wanted to raise his hand again. But only as adrenaline and anger were overtaken by exhaustion, he saw the result of his work. The other young man's face was unrecognisable. Swollen, bloodied and still.
Despite the herald announcing Sho as the winner of the bout, the crowd erupting in a deafening cheer Sho couldn't register anything else. Then a whisper, smooth as silk, entered his mind.
"What do you think?~"
[ Eastern Continent | 11th Brigade ]
[ Hideko Koyabashi | Member of the Akinian military ]
The first thing that Hideko saw when she looked across the Eastern Continent was a landscape that, altogether, didn't differ all too much from the Akinian Empire. Weird, she thought. Very weird. Gradually her mind sank back into reality, with a particularly angry chuunin waiting at the bow, waiting impatiently at the entrance of the ship. He looked through his notes, but rapidly gave up. "Transport these boxes OFF[I/I] the boat, please!" She grew a colour and rapidly grabbed a bag, but the chuunin was already shaking his head. "These boxes! How else is the ship sailing back if you take all their rice!" She placed the sack back and searched for a box, while she mocked the complaining tone of the man. Maybe that wasn't the best idea right in front of him though, but fortunately another near-accident had drawn his attention. "Excuse m- No No! Hang on What i-"
Being a shinobi was rather fun, because that meant that she could do things most of the others couldn't do. She grabbed the box tight, and jumped overboard and landed safely on the dock. Well, sort of safely. She had definitely heard something shift inside the box, and hoped that it wasn't breakable. Because if it was, she'd be in trouble for it.
The next part of the journey followed overland, into the Eastern continent. The trees were different here, or so she was told, but she could hardly tell the difference. Heck, even the rocks, the bushes and the paths were no different here than those in the empire. To her eye, at least. The reason that she'd gathered all of that was because she was forced to travel along with the convoy. Slow, overladen carts with oxes in front, and she was guarding them. She was doing a fine job. Sadly for her, that equalled a boring job. Fortunately at times she was summoned to the front of the caravan to use her Earth Release to get obstacles out of the way, and once even a crater. She enjoyed those moments, but working together with the chuunin in charge of the caravan was perhaps less than ideal. By purely bad luck, she was travelling with the same chuunin at the port. Thus, in retribution, she still hadn't learned his name. I know, bad retribution, but don't tell her.
As the caravan travelled on, the terrain slowly grew from farmlands into pastures, into land that hadn't seen a human hand tending it in quite a while. The road seemed to twist and turn more often than it was leading straight, and after one moment of focus, she realised that she ground here was made out of hard rock, as opposed to mostly dirt. Excellent for the more offensive techniques that her jounin taught her, but way harder to form an even road out of. But the lack of farmhands in the landscape bothered her too. Maybe that was because of what the soldiers said, but this wasn't and that'd been tended or cared for. Whether that was because the lands were simply not suitable, she didn't know, but it did mean that she was slowly crawling closer to her goal.
The conflict in the East.
Each time they entered a new valley, they were welcomed by the same sight. Nevertheless, as they came closer to the camp, even Hideko's ears noticed that. The sound grew louder and louder, but it didn't have a shape. It was weird, to say the least. She expected whistles, trumpetry, or even the drum rolls where you'd find an army, but the main sound was people. Just people doing stuff. It sounded just like a city, strangely enough, but there was a difference. She couldn't put her finger on what, but there was. By the time they reached the top of the next valley, she was shown the rife and strife of the military camp. It was bigger than she'd expected. Back home the only real people were shinobi who carried any sort of weapons, but here the saw a small city. They had certainly learned from Shoji's occupation, that was certain.
They were broken apart once they'd entered the palisade. She, and al others that were supposed to 'report for duty', were sent over to the Quartmasters in search of gear. Once there, she saw a large man ordering things around, and she approached him. However, when she wanted to talk, suddenly a stream of words came out of his mouth. "W-what?" She uttered. The man gave her a second look, called for something behind her, and returned to her. "Ah, a Taika? Hmmmp. Here!" He said, reaching for a box another soldier gave him. "This's for ye, m'am." Hideko accepted the package, and stood there a moment, suddenly unsure of what to do. "Go on! Off to yer unit with ye!" The quartermaster in service said with almost half of a smile. "Eh, excuse me? Wh- where is that?" She tried. "Ah, ye don'no where'yr tent is? Les'see…?" He said, and reached for his notes. "Ye'r a shinobi right? Probably here. That's where the shinobi have their tent, aye?" He said, and was distracted by another soldier.
"Eh, sure?" She stammered, but his attention was long gone. She'd heard about the different languages spoken in the world, as did anyone at school, really, but to that'd been weird, to say the least. Meilin Cho. At least that was a normal name. Hopefully they'd speak normal too. She got some or her ordinariness back aas she left towards the shinobi's tents.
"Hmpf! What else!" She asked the world around her. Unfortunately, the world didn't give such answers. Not in that language, at least.
Karuko finished his affairs without his team. The fact that they were to aid the Intelligence Division was one thing, but he had some suspicion that they were dealing with something more sinister than just a blight. A doubt that likely was shared with more as the Intelligence Division was busy to question people. Upon returning and regrouping with his team, the man listened out what each genin had found out.
The first to explain and go was Yuyuko. The girl explained that she had figured out that there was enough gossip going around, that people were worried about the current state of affairs. It was an admirable attempt, but Karuko saw little use in what the girl had found out.
The next genin to go and provide their findings was Aito. Karuko found the genin amusing, but he hoped that Aito hadn't exactly joked around.
Listening to Aito, Karuko's eyebrows slightly perked up.
The way how the genin had approached the merchants was both amusing and interesting. While it wasn't any concrete evidence, it did make Karuko only become more confident that they were getting on the track of something they should stay far away from it. The fact that there was some smuggling activity ongoing was even more impressive when Aito explained it. Karuko mumbled that the boy had done his work well before he nodded at the last genin to share what they had found out.
Bashira would provide some evidence that someone or people were messing on the rooftop. Something that wasn't too odd. Children tend to climb on rooftops to then drop stuff from it, as part of games. Or else some idiots thought it was a good idea to train to jump from rooftop to rooftop; a reason why most areas had a ban on it, cause it cost much in replacing tiles as well causing a stir for the residents.
What was, however, worrisome was that the finding of Bashira were arrows. Remembering something, Karuko decided that they had found out enough.
Disbanding his team, stating that they were done for the day, the jounin would make sure to report the findings to the Intelligence Division. And then to make sure he stayed far away from the mess surrounding the quarantine.
[ Miyoshi Yuki | Republican ANBU ]
[ Operation: Darkened Eyes ]
[ Nagi | Fiuijtama, capital of Nagi ]
The waves would break as the mighty vessel, Kamome, continued to travel forwards. Sitting against the railing, Miyoshi once more thought about the briefing. In essence, her assignment was relatively easy; she had to figure out what had happened to the previous team of jounin.
So it was just a search and then report back unless something would intervene. The protocols that were given prohibited her to make too much contact with the locals. A decision she could understand, but it would make her work more difficult; for she wasn't a native of Nagi. The island was as new to her as the eastern continent and her people. Preventing unrest to occur was something Miyoshi considered already too late; the people were likely anxious and worried sick that they could be the target of these 'demons'.
She didn't believe in demons. Those were the products of fantasies, utilised by the guile and mighty to keep the sheep flocked and going where they were wanted.
Glancing up, the Yuki noticed the other jounin that had been selected to join her. For some reason, Miyoshi didn't feel that much at comfort. The jounin were together, and most of them seemed to know each other; perhaps even being classmates at the Academy? It sure seemed like it, as they were pretty friendly.
As an ANBU, Miyoshi fell out of that boat. She wasn't one of them, and while she suffered no backtalk or attitudes from the jounin, it was evident that they didn't feel at comfort with her either.
Slightly twisting her head to look away, gazing at the blue sea, Miyoshi wondered about something.
The brass had already sent a team of jounin before. That team of jounin had ventured forth to investigate what happened on Nagi. Only to vanish, which was far from a good signal. To just send another squad of jounin and one ANBU? It sure seemed like either the regime wanted to find an excuse to get rid of another Yuki, Miyoshi thought to herself.
Arriving at the port, Miyoshi didn't waste any time. While the Kamome glided into the harbour, expertly guided by its large crew, Miyoshi spoke with the jounin. She wanted them to investigate any lead and check where the previous jounin had been up to. From where they had slept to what they had eaten; every bit of information was necessary.
The jounin didn't argue back as they departed once the ship was anchored. As the crew made their preparations to deal with the next affair, Miyoshi released a sigh. She would disembark and decide to walk around. Clearing her mind would be an excellent next step, she wagered.
Walking through the bustling port of Fiuijtama, the capital of Nagi, Miyoshi couldn't see much of the unrest that was reported to her. People seemed to just conduct business and attend to everyday affairs without a hint of paranoia or fear. Wanting to speak with several natives, Miyoshi heard the instructions drum in her mind.
Frustrated that she couldn't talk with the locals, there were only the local authorities left to question. Heading to the local administration, she would spend several hours waiting; before she would finally speak with someone of influence.
"Thanks, I will inform my superiors that the Republic hasn't forgotten us yet," a man said as he guided to Miyoshi that she could take a seat in a small but somewhat comfortable looking room. The man was a constable, thus responsible for managing a militia unit - precisely one of the parts that had been attacked.
"I am Kamiya Isoshi," the man introduced himself as he took a seat as well, "I can tell you what I have managed to figure out. Sadly, I don't have many resources to aid you in this investigation," a disarming smile following his words.
"You mean, you don't want to," Miyoshi thought to herself as she realised that they hadn't offered her any refreshments. Perhaps Nagi's opinion regarding Republican operatives wasn't that positive after all? She brushed the thought away, listening to what this Isoshi had to say.
According to the man, the demons were actual demons. They sported horns and were always shrouded in darkness. Their attacks were relentless and ruthless; only leaving survivors that seemed to have gone crazy due to their experience. The survivors speaking of the demons arriving in the cloud of mist and leaving with many people screaming as they were being dragged back to the demon's lair or what place they originated from.
Miyoshi crossed her legs and arms, listening intently. There were some hints that she could take out. Attackers coming out the mist? That meant that these attackers had access to perhaps shinobi of their own? Attacking from the sea without being noticed? That spoke of maritime experience and knowledge. However, Miyoshi remained silent - for she figured that the constable wouldn't need her opinion anyways.
As Isoshi finished, he remained silent, almost hopeful to hear what Miyoshi's opinion was.
"Thanks. I will be travelling soon. My leaders have deemed it necessary to have a team of jounin present so that this threat can be dealt with." Miyoshi replied, her tone polite.
"And what will you do, if you don't mind sating my curiosity?" The man's eyebrows slightly furrowing on his brow, watching as Miyoshi stood up from her seat.
The Yuki looked down on the man, her eyes betraying no emotion or thought.
"I am going to hunt some demons."
Taking a swig from the drink, a satisfied sigh escaped her lips.
"It seemed that they didn't linger around. They first moved across the coast, to the south. But it seemed that the most severe attacks were northwards," the jounin reported. Hirota Yakamochi was one of those jounin that seemed like a nice guy; that would do everything for their genin and chuunin. Just that kind of nice guy that would wind up dead because of some jackass genin believed they were already some hotshot.
"We haven't uncovered much else besides that," Yakamochi stated, leaning back, "I believe that kind of means we are to leave to your hunt, hm? Though if you want, I and the others can travel with you. Make sure that you're not caught alone by whatever is going on out there."
Miyoshi subtly shook her head. "Thanks, I appreciate your help. But your priority is to help secure Nagi. I am just going to investigate what is going on. And then make sure that the information returns back to the brass."
Yakamochi seemed a bit bothered with the answer. "And you think you can handle something that got a team of jounin wiped? Come on, nobody will think less if you take some back up with you."
Miyoshi flashed a friendly smile. "Orders are orders," was the simple response. Noticing that Yakamochi seemed only more concerned or upset about her answer, Miyoshi placed her mug down and rose up from her seat. Placing a few coins on the table, she nodded at the man.
"Good fortune, mister Hirota. Hopefully, we will meet before I venture back to Kirigakure."
Registering some words, Miyoshi already turned and kept walking towards the exit. But already, the Yuki was busy with the next step. To travel northwards and investigate the places that had been hit by the demons.
[ Áki Hon | Rabbit ]
[ A monster in disguise - Part 1 ]
[ A collab between @FrostedCaramel and @RedFox ]
[ Áki meets a Rabbit in The Imperial Palace and learns an important lesson he should do well to remember into his future. ]
This place is humongous. Thank you, Lady Bergljot, that I was given directions, or I'd be looking for it for hours.
Áki was really glad he got the directions sent to him beforehand. The Imperial Palace was without a doubt the most beautiful building he ever saw. Both from inside and outside, the palace was a splendid display of the might of Akino. Walking past the hallways, he felt the significance of it, almost as if it was something tangible. He could spend hours just walking down the halls, admiring them. But he was here for a different purpose. He placed his hand on his stomach, where under the layers of fabric, a seal was present now. He felt a weird sensation just by placing his hand there. He could still not entirely believe it, but every time he looked into the mirror, he was reminded of it.
Áki Hon was no longer the regular Genin he used to be, and he was still coming to terms with it. He received instructions to meet a certain 'Rabbit' on one of the many training fields present in the Palace. Receiving any sorts of training that would help him in his current situation was a prospect he was looking forward to. While the Nine Tails was not giving him the slightest of trouble yet, he was worried whether it will last.Or maybe you're just paranoid, he thought to himself as his mind flashed back to his first encounter with the fox. He was still puzzled by that encounter, but with some time having passed, he was glad for it. He valued learning the truth the hard way more than being lied to about the true nature of the Tailed Beasts. As he was pondering more about this, he made his way to the training field. Upon entering it, he felt glad he came in his full gear today.
Rabbit was already waiting there. She radiated a certain presence that made Áki feel slightly nervous.When will I learn not to judge people by first impression, he thought to himself.Or Tailed Beasts, he thought to himself as he approached his would be mentor for the day." Áki Honl, reporting in! I take it that you're - you're Rabbit?"
Suzu watched as the boy she had been tasked with arrived. She'd spent the past few days reading through everything that had anything to do with the Vessel. His family history, his academic scores, his trials. Everything and anything that she could get her hands on in relation to the boy she had read, hell she was sure at this point she knew more about his family lineage than the boy himself did.
She watched silently from where she sat in the shade of one of the palaces' many walls and frowned as the Vessel boy approached the Sworn Sword that had been using the training field prior to his arrival. The Sworn Sword, a rather stern and serious Chonobi that went by the name of Gisli, had agreed to give up the field once Áki arrived, even agreed to go along with Suzu's plan to trick the young boy into thinking that she was Rabbit. Although it seemed that most of that plan wasn't necessary, as the boy had immediately jumped to the conclusion that Gisli was Rabbit.
He was too quick to assume things were as they appeared. She took mental note of it and decided that the boy was not guarded enough after everything he had just been through. All the secrets, all the smoke and mirrors he had just experienced, yet here he was thinking that everything would be as it should have been according to his orders to meet Rabbit here.
Suzu stood from the bench and walked toward the Vessel and Gisli, "Thank you Gisli, we will be taking the training field now." she waved with her good arm at the Sworn Sword. She shifted her other arm in its sling as Gisli nodded and silently walked off back into the palace interior.
Suzu stopped in front of Áki a few meters and gave him a once over.
"I am Rabbit. I'll be in charge of training you for the time being." she offered a smile and put on her most affable appearance for the Vessel, the presence she gave off nothing like that of Gisli's, instead neutral and welcoming,"I know what has been done to you, and I know the threat you currently pose with your lack of ability to control the beast inside you."
She shuffled to the side and began to walk around the boy pointing around almost randomly at the walls and palace around them, "If you lose control, there are others just waiting for the chance to put you down, but…" she stopped as she was behind the Vessel and leaned in close over his shoulder her good arm coming up to grip the opposite shoulder, "it's unlikely they will get to you before I do."
She leaned away from the boy and moved back in front of him. Fishing a lollipop out of her pocket she gave a small smile to Áki as she unwrapped the candy. Popping it into her mouth she took another out, "Here boy." she said as she tossed it to him.
The young Hon turned around the instant he heard the female voice speak up. He first looked at the man he learned was Gisli, then at the real Rabbit. She spoke perfectly fluent Chonobi, in some ways better than some people he knew. Áki stood there, surprised and frozen in shock, while his face was burning up with embarrassment.Yes, you know, she's got a point, that was dumb, he thought to himself. Blinking a few times, he felt the burning sensation on his face subside and he let Gisli leave without turning. His eyes were fixed on Rabbit, trying to guess what to expect from her. She looked as a very open, approachable person, he would even dare to say that she looked friendly? He was not sure whether that was the correct word for it. But despite her injury, there was this almost tangible sensation around her - she is not one to be messed with, and his best chances at making it through the training, as well as being the vessel for the Nine Tails was to follow her instructions to the letter.Can't really be an asset when I'm the biggest threat, can I? This thought silenced all others, just as Rabbit started to circle around him. Then he felt someone lean over his shoulders and a hand on his other one, speaking those ominous words.
He felt his heart skip a beat. His fingers flexed and remained tense up, as if ready to defend himself from an attack that could come any second. But none came. Rabbit slowly made her way around him and Áki had to silence the dozens upon dozens of questions that were popping up in his mind. She then reached into her pocket and felt his entire body tense up, but when she took out a - lollipop? One of his eyebrows was raised, observing her, feeling completely puzzled. Then she reached into the same pocket and tossed one towards Áki as well. He grabbed it and gave it a quick look, then back to her." I - I am pleased to meet you, Rabbit. I don't know what sort of training is there to improve my control of the - the Nine Tails. But seeing that you do, I am prepared to follow your instructions to the best of my abilities. But before that - is this safe? He asked as he held the lollipop up.
Suzu smiled at the Vessel as he questioned the safety of the lollipop, the fact that he was now hooked onto the item as if it were some sort of test was a bit better of a reaction than his earlier assumptions, but again incorrect.
"The lollipop is safe." she said as she took a step closer to the boy, "I am not." with the utterance of those words she kicked out at Áki, her foot connecting squarely with the center of the boy's chest. Fire climbing up her ribs Suzu watched as the Vessel tumbled away from her. Taking in a long breath to ease the pain in her own chest she began to walk toward the boy. An approachable smile still on her lips she stood again a few meters away from Áki and sighed.
"Get up." she stated flatly, "Get up and protect yourself."
Áki eased up at her response, and a faint hint of a smile was about to spread on his lips at her response. What happened next took him by complete shock. The foot kicked him away with surprising ease and he found himself tumbling backwards, landing on his feet, his face a mix of complete surprise and anger. He looked back at Rabbit as she told him to get up. Just like that, as if talking to a sack of potatoes. Gritting his teeth, he did as he was told. He realized questioning about why she did it was pointless. He reached into his pouch and took out a kunai in his right hand, still clad in bandages from the First Trial. He looked her dead in the eye, his body tense. Instead of protecting himself, he dashed towards Rabbit in a zig-zag pattern.
Watching with a certain disinterest as Áki rose to his feet, Suzu followed the boy's movements as he pulled a kunai from his pouch and seemed to take a moment to decide on his next move. When he took off in a zig-zag toward her Suzu found herself a little disappointed at his choice. Zig-zagging was predictable, easy to guess where someone would be in a few steps, easy to put something in their way.
Pulling the wakizashi at her waist from its scabbard Suzu formed three seals and stabbed the blade into the ground, not even a second later lightning would jump from the blade and over the ground toward the next place that Áki was due to zig-zag into.
Áki was expecting some sort of counter, but he was slightly caught off guard by the nature of it. As he was changing his direction from right to left, lightning connected him at his next step. Instead of being able to change directions, his entire body just headed off in the direction he was going in and landed on the ground with a loud thud as he slid on the earth briefly. His muscles were burning, experiencing random spasms as he rolled on the ground. He growled loud, from the combined effects of the pain from the attack but mostly from frustration, as he tried to turn and get a look at Rabbit. He tried to raise his hand to defend himself from any attacks that might come his way, but his body refused to obey his commands at the pace he wanted it to.
Pulling the blade from the ground Suzu scoffed as she walked toward the Hon, "You're the vessel for the Kyuubi, and yet this is the best you can do?" without missing a beat between steps she brought her boot across the boy's face and continued forward, "Pathetic. How you were chosen is beyond me."
She turned around and kicked the boy square in his flank. The urge to continue her abuse only building as she kicked again, "What sort of a shinobi are you anyway? Can't even protect yourself," she added as she put the heel of her boot down on the hand that he had tried to block with, "you're no better than a child, you just happen to have a beast inside you. One that can't even help you, refuses to probably."
Crouching down to bring herself level with the Hon's face she turned his head to look at her, "You're not worth the beast's time." she declared before rising once more and putting distance between herself and Áki.
"Get up."
Áki tried to get up, but his body refused to do exactly as he wanted to. He tried to raise his hand but it was a second too slow as he felt a boot go across his face, causing him to land back on his back. Rabbit continued to taunt him, being kicked again. Slowly raising his hand again, it was pinned under said boot. As she knelt down, their eyes met and the Hon gave off a look he never thought he was capable of. His eyes gave off anger, the same anger that was filling him to the brink right now. As he was told to get up, he slowly did, his body shaking slightly, his movements shaky and imprecise. He wiped his face clean and reached for his equipment pouch, taking out a smoke bomb and he let it hit the ground, granting him some cover. His shaky hands came together and formed the seal needed to create a Shadow Clone made of his Lightning natured chakra. Both of them darted out of the smoke, coming at Rabbit from different angles and both preparing their own moves.
Watching as Áki pulled himself to his feet she followed the movement of his hand as it slipped into his equipment pouch and came back with a smoke bomb. As the obscuring smoke billowed around the boy Suzu caught a glimpse of him moving his hands to form the start of a seal. Not knowing exactly what he was up to, the Sworn Sworn put herself on slightly more guard than she had originally afforded the Hon and took to waiting for any signs of movement in the smoke.
When two Áki's burst forth from the smoke Suzu took a moment to decide what to do next. As quickly as the two Áki's had laid eyes on Suzu and with a single handsign the Sworn Sword disappeared from the training field.
Unseen to the human eye Suzu moved away from where she had been standing, her footsteps silent as she moved around the training fields.
"There's a time for running headlong into an opponent." she said, nothing more than a disembodied voice coming from some vague area of the training field, "And a time to rethink your actions."
Confident she had the clone picked out of the two she sent her katana spinning toward it, seemingly appearing from thin air as she let it go from her grip.
Áki knew he made a gamble when he tried the pincer movement on someone as skilled as Rabbit appeared to be. When she disappeared from plain sight, he realized the depth of his mistake. It was made even more apparent when Rabbit's seemingly disembodied voice spoke up. Quickly coming to a halt, both Áki and his clone tried to salvage the situation. Reaching into his pockets to grab a hold of three shuriken, while his clone started to mold his chakra. They kept the distance between themselves. Then all out of nothing, a katana materialized from thin air. Cursing in his mind, his eyes wide. He locked onto his clone and used the Substitution Technique.
The two switched places at the last possible moment and the clone disappeared in a puff of smoke. Áki quickly molded some chakra and focused it into his shuriken. Upon hurling it, he formed a quick series of seals. Judging from the direction from which the katana was slung at him, he hurled the shuriken in a somewhat wider spread. After they traveled the distance the boy judged to be sufficient, he formed the Ram seal, making the shuriken explode into tiny fragments, that were somewhat slower due to the lack of time he had to perform his technique. He reached for a kunai and jumped away from where he judged Rabbit would be, tensely awaiting her next move.
As the clone burst into smoke Suzu was already moving toward Áki. She didn't even need to move to dodge the shuriken as they whizzed past her and exploded harmlessly behind her. Walking toward the boy as he seemed to try and anticipate what was next, Suzu remained quiet, not wanting to give away just how close to the boy she really was.
Without any time for Áki to react Suzu slammed a fist into his flank and disarmed him of his kunai in one fluid motion. Dropping the weapon to the ground she grabbed Áki by the neck with her good arm and lifted him effortlessly off his feet.
"Do you know what happens to a Shinobi that manages to lose their weapon in a fight?" she asked, not giving the boy a chance to respond she answered her own question, "They die."
With those final words Áki would find himself falling as he was plunged into complete darkness.
[ Operation: Snakes Northwards ]
[ A collaberation between @Oblivion666 , @Aliceee and @Lesli ]
[ Aiko and Kazumo meet up with the delegation from the Lagyrian people. The meeting goes rather well, until an unfortunate event strikes - forcing the meeting to end, just as the two parties came to a decision together. ]
At the dawn of the day, everything was ready. Several men on horseback seemed to wait patiently as two small groups of soldiers on foot were slightly behind them, in formation. The lack of large backpacks or carts indicated that this wasn't supposed to be a lengthy endeavour.
Walking towards one of the horses that awaited them, Aiko was much like most of the present troops in a good mood. The blistering cold was slowly replaced by a mild warmth - one of the signs that Spring was arriving.
"If everything goes as planned," Aiko began against her chosen companion and bodyguard, "we will be back before the sky turns from colour. And having secured, hopefully, this blasted northern front."
Mounting one of the horses, Aiko threw a glance at the nearby troops. There was some suggestion from other officers if they shouldn't send more forces. But Aiko already had sent a few and small units ahead of them. More could either spook or give a wrong impression on these Lagyrians.
"Ready?" Aiko asked, throwing a look back at Kazumo, waiting for him to be mounted.
He was still a bit surprised Aiko had chosen him to come with her on a task this important. It filled him with both pride and also made him nervous as well, after all far more skilled individuals could have filled the spot he was in. He did his best though to calm his nerves as he nodded at her words, hopefully everything did go as planned but some things as of late never did it seemed.
He would follow in suit and mount the horse given to him and gave Aiko an affirmative nod. "About as ready as I will be. Anything I should know about in advance before this meeting?"
"Good," Aiko replied with, at first. She made a gesture with her free hand, which set a sequence of voices to rise - giving commands to their respective units. The path towards the meeting would see them travel for a few hours but, at least, they had the comfort of riding on horseback, Aiko mused to herself.
"That you'll be representing the crown of Akino," Aiko began, "as the uncle of her Majesty, you will be presenting yourself as a valuable emissary of the Akinian Empire. Of course, I will do most of the talking as your mentor and such," Aiko further explained calmly. She already had a hunch on how Kazumo would take this surprise.
"Other than that, that this might allow us to gain some allies that are native to these lands. So no pressure," the woman concluded, a smile dawning on her lips.
Well he had to admit he was most certainly surprised that he was the important piece in this deal making. While she said she would be doing most of the talking, he knew she wouldn't be able to speak the entire time for him. That did slightly concern him as meeting with leaders to discuss possible alliances was a topic he never experienced before, mostly if things went south. He could only hope it stayed calm and that no unneeded fighting ensued, last thing they needed was another enemy that knew the land layout better than them.
"I shall do my utmost to look as important as possible. By that I mean I'll do my best to not say anything stupid. Any tips though? Can't lie and say I'm not nervous, thought I was a bodyguard and not a bargaining chip for them to accept a deal with us." He was curious about how he should act in this circumstance, he knew not to be rude obviously but they were faced with a war situation and wanted a possible ally. He didn't wish to be the reason they didn't get an ally but instead an enemy.
Aiko threw a sideways glance at Kazumo. She was well aware that this was all sudden. Not to mention, a heavy burden. When he responded, Aiko seemed quite amused by his words.
"Tips? Try to keep your back straight. Don't bow or treat them as superiors. When they speak, you respond in Chonobi to me." Aiko waited for a moment. Only to lowering her voice. "At any rate, you want to become king, you'll need to understand how to act as one. Try to see this as your first test."
Letting her words sink in, Aiko focused on the direction they were heading towards. "For now, just take it easy. Enjoy the ride and use the time to collect yourself."
"So have that posture to seem like they want this deal more than we do. Yet I can do that, granted I never saw how a king acted but I'll act important as I can." Kazumo said giving Aiko a thumbs up while staring ahead to where this deal would be taking place. Act important and only speak in Chonobi to Aiko. Simple enough but when things were this simple, things always had a way to bite when you least wanted them too. Guess thats why they had some people on lookout anyway. To stop any biting that could happen.
Aiko had a fitting joke on the tip of her tongue. But she opted against voicing it. Redirecting her attention to the path ahead, the group would split up eventually as the various Akinian units headed to take up their position. Now with some of her guards and Kazumo, Aiko continued to travel towards the meeting point.
It was between some hills, where the area was flat. There wasn't anything of a landmark to pinpoint the location other than the various hills. But as they arrived, so too would the Lagyrians. Dressed in foreign clothing and eyeing with wary eyes at the Akinians, the Lagyrians didn't appear to arrive with many guards.
Dismounting her horse, Aiko threw a sideways glance at Kazumo before clearing her throat. "We have arrived on your invitation, Lagyrians. Representing the Imperial Crown of Akino, you are facing Lord Kazumo of the Sarutobi clan. Descendant of Sigeberth and confidante of her Imperial majesty. State your intentions and we may begin the parley."
The Lagyrians remained silent for a few seconds. They clearly eyed the Akinians with distrust, their stances betraying their thoughts. One of the men then stepped forwards, his attire foreign and making it difficult for the Akinians to deduce his ranking among the other Lagyrians. When the Lagyrian finally spoke, his Taika suffered a thick accent.
"You have arrived on the lands of the righteous and holy lord of all Lagyrians. His Majesty, the glorious Lord Laga, wants to clear out hostility between our people. For as long as you don't seek to disrupt his right to rule, we can perhaps stay our blades. And use steel and fire against the true enemy."
Judging by how the man seemed to wait, his head slightly cocked to the right, he awaited an answer.
He did his best to calm his nerves and to maintain a rather serious expression as they arrived at the meeting. Looking at Aiko she seemed like she was more than accustomed to talks like this, and the other party also seemed to be unmoved by a foreign force.
When the man finished his input, Kazumo looked at Aiko and would begin speaking. "Then it seems our goals align with theirs. Yet how can we be certain that this isn't just a ploy?" Kazumo stated in Chonobi to his sensei before once again putting his attention back onto the representative for this Lord Laga
Hooking her thumbs behind her belt, Aiko frowned slightly. She took in the words but didn't respond right away. As Kazumo spoke up, she threw him a glance, flashing a smile. "True, it seems that we align and have the same enemy. But good question," Aiko responded back in Chonobi before turning back to the Lagyrian delegation.
"Lord Kazumo is content to hear we can stay our blades. But how do we ensure that it stays that way? Rong is indeed our enemy but some assurance can see to it that our alliance will hold. Even becoming victorious."
The Lagyrians seemed to converse softly together, though the one that spoke before held his eyes on Kazumo and Aiko. Raising a hand, his companions turned silent. "Your lord asks a fair question," the diplomat began, evidently cautious, "I would like to suggest wards. To ensure that we keep true to our deals." The man folded his hands in front of his stomach as he nodded at the two Chonobi.
"Either we promise both wards that are equal in terms of social influence and importance. Or an item worthy of a king, until you have earned our trust."
Wards or an item worthy of a king? Well the ward option was rather limited in proper candidates, meaning basically like three people. As for Item….. he wasn't giving up his sword. Pondering on this he looked at Aiko to respond back. "We could send someone under the guise of having a certain class. Someone still capable enough to not fall for any tricks." Kazumo replied in Chonobi before looking back at the other speaker. He did his best to remain stern, this was still new to him. So most he had to go off of was how other lords seemed to act.
She was going to let him think. And she wasn't sure if it was because she had experienced enough with Kazumo, to follow his thoughts or because it was evident for her. A smirk started to dawn on the woman's lips as she waited for Kazumo to finish his sentence.
"My dear, you mean someone that can also spy and gather information for us?~" a glint starting to appear in Aiko's eyes as she nodded slowly, almost ceremoniously, "consider it done, lord.~"
Turning around, Aiko waited a second. Appearing for a second as if she had to translate Kazumo's desire into Taika, to make it known to the Lagyrians. Then she flashed a friendly smile, before speaking up. "My lordship desires to see our people working together. Your suggestion of a ward exchange will be accepted, my good sir. You can expect an important noble, from Lord Kazumo's court. Perhaps even be able to make use of his abilities? When would you like to establish the exchange?"
The Lagyrian seemed to observe both Kazumo and Aiko, intently. His facial expression betrayed little to nothing of his thought. Yet as Aiko spoke in Taika, the diplomat seemed to grow satisfied. Nodding slowly, he would make a small bow towards Kazumo. "We can arrange the exchange very soon, if it pleases your lord. We are aware of the location of your camp. If you will prepare your ward, we will arrive with ours within three days." The diplomat seemed as if he wanted to say more but then a soft sound erupted, catching the attention of most at the meeting - as a ball of fire seemed to follow another, exploding in the air.
Twisting his head, the diplomat threw a stern look at the Chonobi. "What was the meaning of that?!"
Well that was certainly a use that he didn't think of. Letting Aiko speak to the diplomat a small smile would grow as an agreement would be made. Just as the talk was soon to be done a sound erupted causing Kazumo to look in the direction as a ball of fire flew into the sky and exploded. The man asked for the meaning but Kazumo could only look in its direction, that was the direction Meilin's team was in. Looking at Aiko a more worried expression was now on his face.
"That means a hostile force is approaching right? More than what they can handle if they did the signal."
Still staring at the direction that the fireball had exploded, Aiko released a soft sigh. Muttering something underneath her breath, she threw a sideways look at Kazumo. "Yes, most likely something in that direction," Aiko replied first to Kazumo in their native tongue, before turning to the Lagyrian delegation. Spreading her arms slightly, she would continue. "My good sirs, Lord Kazumo offers his protection from whatever has spooked our forces. If you would, see this as a test of goodwill and faith towards our future cooperation." Aiko said, half turning to Kazumo - quickly swapping to Chonobi once more.. "You take my guards and guide these gentlemen away. Back to the direction of camp. Wait for me, I will deal with whatever is disturbing our little meeting. Am I clear?"
When AIko stated they would protect the Lagrains, Kazumo once more returned to his stern look as he was about to ready himself to fend off whatever may come…. Only Aiko then told him to escort the men back to camp to which he could only look at her with what looked like him wanting to speak back and stay and fight but he bite his tongue and simply gave a nod as he got back on his horse.
He looked at the Guards and gave them a nod before looking at the Lagyrians waiting for them to follow suit so the guards and himself could protect them. It didnt take long at all before the diplomats were following behind him. He gave a small smile to AIko before taking off with the guards and diplomats.
"Alright. This is enough. Now, just listen to my voice," Neime's voice suddenly resonated, a bit closer to the genin. Placing a hand on the head of each genin, Neime was at the ready to intervene right away.
"Calm your chakra slowly and steadily. Don't rush it, do it very slowly if you don't want the backlash," the chuunin instructed, already moulding her chakra in case one of them would get either anxious, distracted or somehow screw it up.
Sugi heard Neime's calm instructions resonate within his ears as well as the faint touch of her hand upon his head. He complied of course as he then focused on calming his chakra carefully. However, the genin would immediately run into problems. Not only was he not particularly gifted at moulding chakra or chakra control but Neime's physical contact, unknowingly of course, was drastically throwing off Sugi's concentration. He wasn't used to others being in such close proximity to himself, let alone touching his head.
The genin felt his control slipping as instead of a gentle steadying of his chakra it started to flare up and induce a horrid burning sensation. "C-crap!" Is all he could spurt out as he doubled over in his meditation position, wrapping his arms around his stomach region. The pain was all that Neime had described and more he felt. As if someone shot a fireball jutsu right down his throat. Neime was likely to step in quickly but for this short moment Sugi would be in the most physical pain he'd ever endured. Despite his one word outburst the boy grimaced, fighting back the urge to yell out in agony so that he would at least not throw off Sana's concentration. He refused to be the reason for her experiencing this pain.
Ah, just as Sana was thinking about how exactly to stop the exercise without discharging the built up chakra, Neime-senpai came to the rescue. Her voice was soothing enough not to disturb her, yet was able to catch her attention amidst her intense concentration. She was somewhat startled by her touch, and her chakra buzzed irritatedly, but the genin was able to wrest it under control and gradually calmed it down. It was still weird to be doing this; calming it down and undoing all that build-up without setting it free. She did manage eventually, and opened her eyes to see her team-mate in pain. "Oh, dear," she uttered quietly. Sana had honestly not noticed his struggles while she'd been in the midst of disentangling from her own chakra to finish the exercise. Still, she didn't do anything beyond observing and remaining calm, privately thinking that the moulding had been tricky but not impossible - in fact, she was looking forward to how much better she might do the next time they were to do this. She slowly stood up and stretched, then walked a few steps away to give space to the other two.
Intently watching the genin, Neime overheard the word that Sugi managed to bring out. Her head twisted slightly but immediately to look at the boy. As expected, the pain followed without hesitation - causing Sugi to double over.
But before she would attend fully towards Sugi, Neime briefly diverted her attention back at Sana. The other genin managed to avoid the painful state that Sugi found himself in. Allowing Neime to fully turn her attention towards Sugi.
"Sugi," Neime calmly stated, a fierce authorian undertone becoming more present, "listen to my voice," the Hayashi continued. She placed both hands on the boy; one hand at his head and the other at his shoulder. Inserting her chakra from her hands into Sugi, she tried to find a balance to work quickly and cautiously.
Time seemed to slow down as adrenaline rushed through Neime's body, her head slightly feeling light as she began to worry that she had exposed Sugi to something he wasn't ready for. What seemed to be an hour to Neime and Sugi couldn't be more than a few seconds before Neime managed to calm down Sugi's chakra.
Once noticing that Sugi wasn't in pain, Neime would scoot a bit backwards - allowing the boy some more space to breathe. "Straighten your back if you can. Keep focusing on breathing and calming yourself." A slight worry was visible on the Hayashi's expression.
Sugi's eyes were closed shut and twitching as the burning pain surged through him. Unlike at the start when he slipped up and he was able to keep things under control, now he could think as his chakra points each felt like a smoldering coal. The genin felt two hands now placed on him, Neime's voice piercing through his distracted senses. The feeling of the chuunin's chakra flowing into Sugi was akin to having buckets of water being splashed onto a fire, a mix of relief and anxiety swept through him. The boy's voice cracked as he spoke again. "Neime senpai."
The genin understood the seriousness of the situation magnified by Neime's tone of voice. He promptly listened to the instructions once the pain had subsided, having been doused by his senpai's quick actions. Sugi's hands would noticeably shake and tremble as he tried to straighten up and calm himself down. His nerves were getting the better of him though after that unpleasant experience. Thinking quickly, Sugi made the handseal of the rat once again; not to mould chakra but to help him focus and minimize the shaking. He went about calming his chakra as steadily as possible in his current state, taking long and deep breaths for a couple of tense minutes.
Finally, Sugi would regain himself. He'd open his eyes to see a worried senpai in front of him. Looking to his side for Sana only to see that she'd also stepped back. The genin was glad that Sana seemed to have done just fine, as expected as that was. Sugi's gaze fixated on the wooden planks of the ship's deck as he continued taking calming breaths, his fists tightened up on top of his thighs as he sat silently. Obviously frustrated and in low spirits the boy spoke up. "S-sorry for making you worry...Neime senpai. I...I'll stick with doing chakra control exercises from the academy for awhile before trying this again." As defeated as Sugi felt at the moment he was no fool. If he kept recklessly trying this exercise at his stage he knew it'd only end badly; he knew when to give up.
Neime would slightly back away, giving Sugi more room to breath. As the boy declared that he would stick with the basic chakra control exercises, Neime decided to give a subtle nod - opposing her decision to voice her thoughts.
The journey seemed to go without much problems. A few stops were made to refill the supplies that were required to keep everyone's belly filled. Not to mention the various other necessities that Neime wasn't fully aware or interested in.
With the days going by slowly, there hadn't been much she could provide to keep the genin either entertained or from going bored. The situation with the rest of the ship's crew or marine detachment hadn't changed yet. And once more, Neime's team found itself stuck on the ship's deck again.
A strong breeze passed the people on deck of the vessel, that continued to brave the waves. The deckhands shouted at each other as well receiving shouts from the captain, which was quickly followed by motions of handling the large vessel.
Out of nowhere, it then happened. A large jet of water was launched into the air, only followed by something that could be described as a dark hill briefly rising above the waves.
Another jet of water was launched into the air, followed by a similar motion.
Excited shouts briefly replaced the usual instructions.
Watching from the reeling, Neime frowned. Soon enough, more of the strange creatures seemed to reveal themselves. A large tail was visible, almost as if one of those creatures waved at those present on the Kaimon's deck.
As some more on deck came to admire the arrival of whales, the ship shook. The light tremble that went through the Kaimon was enough to surprise some of the crew but set out a response. A tangible tension started to rise as commands were shouted.
A heightened pace was introduced with the drums, causing the rowers to exert more energy. With the ship gaining more speed, a dark shadow seemed to glide underneath the waves.
Staring over the reeling, Neime squinted her eyes to figure out what it was. Only to catch something. Soon enough, it was shouted by deckhands; enemy sails.
On the horizon was a large vessel, with sails as black as tar. It lacked any sigil but it was clearly heading towards the Kaimon.
Turning to Sana and Sugi, Neime wanted to say something. But the ship once more shook and trembled. Throwing a look over to the waves, Neime spotted once more a dark silhouette, before the white waves caused her to lose sight of it.
"Something is trying to slow us down in the water," Neime spoke to the genin, raising her voice to make herself audible. "We need to get rid of it," the Hayashi stated as she looked around. Spotting a heap of ropes, she gestured the genin to follow her. Unfolding some ropes, she would knot the one of the ropes to her weapon belt.
"We are going to get on the waves. You both know how to stand on water right, that technique that they teach in the Academy? Tie yourself to the railing and follow my lead."
Firmly securing the knot on her belt, Neime continued to the back of the ship. Using the other end of rope to link herself with the railing, Neime took a deep breath in. Climbing on the railing, she peered at the water. Only to sight the large shadow again.
Without a warning, the chuunin jumped from the railing towards the rough waves. Concentrating chakra at her feet, she managed to land on the water but had to focus on her balancing to not be toppled by one of the waves.
Looking around, she tried to once more spot the shadow among the waves - already pulling out a kunai.
Sugi had also been admiring the curious whales with some of the crew when the more alarming orders started getting called out. Looking back over the ship's railing the genin stared at the ways off black-sailed ship. "You've got to be kidding me." He felt the rumble beneath his feet as the ship was rocked, trying to stay out of the way of deckhands rushing past him. Sugi followed in line with Neime as he tied a rope around his tool belt, making sure he had plenty of slack. Having caught a glimpse of the shadow himself he spoke up as they were all tying up. "Think it could be the work of a summoning jutsu?" The genin knew whatever it was they did indeed need to make it stop slowing down the ship if they wanted to escape a ship to ship battle.
It was times like these that Sugi was glad he spent so much time practicing how to stand on water with his chakra. Securing his other end to the railing, he focused for a moment, flowing his chakra down to the soles of his feet before vaulting over the side and down onto the water. The genin ratherly comfortably stepped here and there in order to keep his balance better as the sea churned beneath him in the Kaimon's wake. Thinking quickly Sugi began to weave signs as he used the Haze Clone Technique. Hundreds of Sugi like clones appeared from out of the waves in scattered groups on the one side of the Kaimon. Since the clones had no mass of their own he'd have them purposely behave as they were trying to balance upon the waves. "If whatever's down there attacks from below, hopefully now it has a harder time picking targets."
It was so entirely peaceful that Sana was long convinced their journey would conclude uneventfully. Of course, it was during one of those frankly boring stretches of time, when the female genin was contemplating getting on shore, their mission, and generally itching for a bit of change already, that something indeed happened. There was a gush of water sprouting out from the sea, excited shouting drawing to observe the spectacle. Sana also slinked closer, observing the whales. She'd not seen one in real life before, only in pictures, and they were truly majestic creatures.
However, the event soon turned sour - the ship began shaking, and Sana narrowed her eyes at the whales, who soon disappeared underwater, wondering if they were responsible or if it was something else. Soon, enemy ships appeared and distracted her. Then, Neime-senpai shouted her instructions, and Sana redirected all her attention to dealing with the threat. "They probably are summons," she answered. Following the chuunin's lead, she grabbed a rope, tied it to herself and the railing, then jumped down. She coated her sword in lightning chakra, looking around. "Well...If I stick this in the water, it will spread, but since we're also here, I have to avoid electrocuting us," she said dryly. Actually, she wasn't sure if the current around her blade was strong enough for anything lethal when conducted by seawater, but it was probably better not to risk it.
"Yeah, let's not try to fry each other," Neime replied back to Sana. The Hayashi chuunin threw looks around, trying to catch a glimpse of the large shadow that seemed to repeatedly try to slow down the ship. Throwing a glance as Sugi performed his Haze Clone technique, Neime was about to say something.
But a loud sound erupted from just behind the three.
Rising briefly from the waves a large head emerged. Slim in design but covered in dark scales, a pair of red eyes staring at the three shinobi. A loud hiss started to resonate from the large head as its lips parted, revealing rows of sharp teeth - each seeming the size of elongated kunai.
Staring at the revealed monstrosity, Neime froze for a second. Only to then try to take aim and throw her kunai.
"Take out its eyes!" She shouted, only witnessing that her kunai didn't even manage to pierce the dark scales - as the sea serpent was about to dive back into the waves.
[ The second part of the meeting between Rabbit and Áki, where she emphasizes the lesson she's trying to teach with a hands on display of the outcome of failure.. ]
Áki fell. Through a featureless black void the boy plummeted further and faster with every moment. The endless chasm of darkness consumed him, the only sound that of the air rushing past him and his heart pounding in his chest.
Somewhere, far below the boy a light appeared. Growing slowly at first the light began to become more defined, gaining shape and giving definition to the area around it as the Hon fell faster and faster toward it.
At once the light gave form to a house from above and Áki quickly fell to meet it as the roof sheared off and the building yawned up to consume him. In an instant Áki was on the floor of the building unharmed, the familiar sights of his own family home greeting him. As he looked around an ever familiar voice would draw his attention to one of the adjoining rooms.
The boy barely had time to react to his ruse being blown, his attack having little to no effect before he was falling through the darkness. The air rushing past his ears deafened him to the point he could no longer hear his screams as he fell towards the light below him. It quickly changed shape into a building that swallowed him and as he stood on the floor, he immediately recognized his surroundings.I'm - I'm home, the boy thought to himself. His heart was still racing as he looked around, taking in all the details. It was exactly as he remembered it.
Together with the voice that caught his attention from the room where his mother would usually spend her days. Eager to see her after the events he went through in the last few days, he stepped towards the door. The floor creaked under his feet as it used to.I used to avoid this tile when sneaking out, he thought as he stepped past it. He reached the door and tried to open the handle.
Locked? That's - that's strange, he thought as he tried to open it again. No effect. He pulled harder, and still nothing. From behind the door, the voice still continued to call out to him." I'm coming, mom! The door is stuck!" He spoke these words. Or at least he thought he voiced them. The room remained completely silent. Feeling panic creeping upon him, he started to pull the door harder, bringing his fist down on it in a seemingly vain attempt to reach the voice on the other side of it.
As the boy called out through the door his voice was all but swallowed the moment it left his mouth, silence, his only companion.
There was at first a distant noise from the otherside of the door, a quiet clamour that died out as quickly as it could be heard. The voice that had been calling to him had gone quiet at the noise and stillness stretched out on the other side of the door until all at once it was shattered.
The sound of a door bursting open on the other side heralded a horrible clamour as a new voice added itself to the scene Áki could not see. There was a crash as something heavy hit the ground punctuated by the sound of shattering glass and pottery.
The new voice seemed to drop an octave, rumbling on with a ferocity that could be felt through the air. There was a short scream as another item shattered just on the opposite of the door Áki was standing in front of and the voice rose again, its volume nearly drowning out the sounds of movement and struggle in the next room.
Áki felt the blood in his vein turn cold as he recognized the new voice. The sounds coming from the other room were like an overwhelming symphony for his ears. He started to pull the door as hard as he could, his heart beating in his throat as he desperately tried to open that damned door. He let the handle go and started to bang on it with both fists, screaming for his mom to hold on, the sound of his voice again swallowed by nothingness. The frustration he experienced was now overwhelming him and he brought down his fists on the door as hard as he could.
Not surprised with the outcome, his mind screamed out loud. A cry that resonated in his body, as he was trying to break the door down. He smashed his fists into it, hit it with his knee, but the door seemed to shrug off his attempts. He kept on screaming as tears started to well up in his eyes, his anger starting to feel like a raging fire spreading through his body. He walked to the opposite end of his room, his body shaking as he turned towards the door. He dashed against it, wanting to break it down with his shoulder.
He found himself lying on the ground, the door still in one piece. Despite the pain he felt in his shoulder, he stood up and tried to kick the door down. The door, almost mockingly, didn't even budge. He slammed against it, smashing his fist against it, banging on it with his palm. Then he tensed his fingers, his nails sliding on the cold surface, his voice screaming for help, only to be drowned by his room.
The voices on the other side seemed to ring out in discordant tones. Fury overtook the room as another large crash shook the door behind which Áki stood and a cry rang out from the first voice Áki had heard. It pleaded for the fury of the second voice to stop only to be met with loathsome words. Then a yell as a new sound Áki had yet to hear joined in with a cry and the sound of a person hitting the ground.
There was a moment of silence before the first voice pleaded with the second before it switched to calling out for Áki himself. For him to help her, as he had once set out to be able to do. Commotion once more filled the air on the other side of the door as the invisible struggle started again.
Panic and desperation took hold over the young boy. He frantically smashed his fists against the door, his muscles tense, his hand sore from his attempts. He screamed for his mom to hold on, to help him. Confusion started to set in. Wasn't he the one who was supposed to help her? Wasn't he the one who promised to help her, all those years ago? Anger was now joined in sorrow and desperation in his mind, his efforts to bring down the door now hysterical. He took a few steps back and fixed the door with his look.
He tried to mold his chakra to perform the Lightning Beast Running Technique, in hopes of bringing the door down. But to his shock, nothing happened. He shook his head and tried again, with the exact same result. He stood there, eyes wide open. The sounds of struggle from the next room were deafening, pushing any and all rationality out of his mind. His hands trembling as he looked at them, then at the door again. He clenched both hands into fists and gritted his teeth.
He charged the door again and slammed against it, his hands banging on it again. Desperation and anger fueled him, but sorrow was holding him in its grasp. He raised his head and slammed it against the door, again and again. After a few attempts, he lost his balance and landed on his back, his head pounding from the pain, from all the feelings he was experiencing. He reached for his hair and grasped it, seemingly trying to tear it from his skull.
Why? Why can't I get through those damned doors? Why am I training to take down a person, to kill a person, when I can't get through a single! Damned! Piece of wood? His mind screamed, he desperately tried to get up. Tears were rolling down his face as he managed to get on his knees.All those years, wasted! I'm still weak! Weak! He hid his face in his hands, letting out a silent scream into them.Weaker than I was! I wanted to be a shinobi to get strong, to protect her! I became a Jinchuuriki, to get even stronger! I'm weaker than ever! The thought overwhelmed him, as he let out another scream. He wanted to scream until his vocal chords tore up, then scream again, and again.
A sudden silence filled the air from the other side of the door as all sounds of commotion and struggle ceased. Silently the room around Áki fell away from him, leaving him sitting in a dark void. At once his surroundings shifted again, the black replaced by an infinite white expanse.
There was a soft sound from behind Áki as if something or someone had shifted slightly. When the boy turned he would find his mother sat before him, everything about her the same as the last time he had seen her with no signs of any injuries from the altercation the boy had just listened to.
Sigrid looked down at her son from where she sat, looking over his snivelling and sorry form with utter contempt.
"You promised me." she said, disdain lacing every part of the words, "You said you'd save me."
His mother stopped and looked over him again, revulsion in her eyes as she seemed to linger for a short time on his own eyes.
"Now you're no different from him…" she shuddered in her seat and brought a hand to her mouth as tears welled in her eyes, "I always knew you'd end up a monster too."
With the utterance of those words the chair Sigrid sat in slid away at immense speed into the distance, leaving Áki once more alone in white expanse.
The sudden, unexpected change took him by shock, his head turning around to get a grip on his new surroundings. He saw nothing, only whiteness. He tried to open his mouth, to shout, to scream, to ask where his mother was but he was interrupted by the sounds of movement coming from behind him. He turned and saw his mother, unharmed from the previous struggle." Mom! Are you - "
Her words cut straight through him, like a sharp kunai through a piece of fabric. Every single one of them drove one into Áki's heart, who was on his hands and knees, his shaky hand stopped halfway as he tried to reach out. She compared him to his father, to Lokar. The boy shook his head frantically, but she continued. A monster. That's what she thought about him now. Tears flooded out of his eyes, as he shook his head in a vain attempt to convince her that he is not one, that he is still her son. He wanted to apologize for not keeping his word, for letting her down. Then she slid away, the last thing the boy saw was her contempt, her tears.
He stared at the direction she disappeared into for several seconds, his shaky hand now stretched out." No! Please, no! Don't leave me! I'm not - I'm not like him! I'm not a monster! I'm not! I'm not." He sobbed, dropping his head to look at the whiteness underneath him.
Surging up from beneath Áki a group of figures stopped on the same plane as him, surrounding him in a ring of familiar faces and voices.
"What have you done Áki?!"
"Are you even Áki anymore?"
The cacophony of voices lashed out at him, the familiar faces of his village deriding him and throwing curses and insults at him as one.
"Why?" came a single voice from the crowd as the rest fell silent, "Why accept that thing into you? Why couldn't you have done it on your own?"
"Monster!" the crowd picked up again.
"You're no better than a beast! No better than your father!"
He could not lift his head, but he recognized the voices. Each word, each sentence was like a rod, pinning him into his position. All he could do was sob. Within, sadness and anger were rising, filling his mind." I'm not. I'm not a beast! I'm - I'm not! I'm Áki! I'm not a beast! Not my father! I'm Áki Hon!" He kept repeating, either sadness or anger dominant in his voice. The relentless onslaught of voices continued to assault his mind, slowly, but certainly pushing him over his tipping point. His hands slid into his hair, grasping it into his fists, pulling on them. As he was compared to his father, his sadness was subdued by his anger and he rose to his knees, his fingers curled up, twisted in anger.
" I did it to protect all of you ungrateful lot! I did it for you! And this is your gratitude! This is her gratitude! I became a beast, a monster! You're no better than me! You're all - you're all-" His voice broke and he was sprawled flat on the whiteness. He felt as if he burned out from within, his body aching as his anger left him. His mind was in disarray, thoughts swirling in his mind as he reached out with his hand." Someone. Please. Help. Me." His voice was quiet, sobbing, easily overwhelmed by the other one still chastising
"And like that, you are nothing." Suzu said as she stood over the Hon, his form spread out in the grass of the training field.
Shifting where she stood the Sworn Sword squatted down to be closer to the boy, "Get up before I send you back." she smiled down at the boy ignoring his outstretched hand, disdain growing in her mind as she had a better chance to study his bloodshot eyes and tear stained face.
Standing up straight once more she was a little disappointed that nothing interesting had happened, that the true star of the show had decided to remain backstage after all. But she was resigned to the fact that it would likely remain that way for a while. If she were an immortal beast of immeasurable power, she too would find the driveling form of her vessel less than worth her attention too, she barely gave the wellbeing of the Hon thought beyond any future use to the Empress as it was now.
Rabbit's voice tore him out of wherever she sent him. He opened his eyes and immediately recognized the training field. His best guess is that he fell victim to a particularly potent Genjutsu. Despite the only voice present now belonging to his current mentor, he could still hear all the goading, taunting, all of it echoing in his mind. He closed his eyes for a few seconds when asked to stand up, forcing the voices to the back of his mind. Áki knew they would probably return at some point in the future, but there was nothing he could do about it right now. His hands wiped his tears away and he swiftly sat up, looking up at Rabbit. His red eyes, still displaying a mixture of sadness, sorrow and frustration met those of her. However, determination slowly started to add itself into them as he stood up.
" I - I don't want to feel like that ever again. Ever. He remained silent for a few seconds, as if thinking about a way to ask for help. " You - I realize that this was a pathetic showing on my behalf. I - I think even the Nine Tails is disgusted. Rightly so. I need - I want your help not to end up like that again." He tried to sound as resolute as he possibly could, but even he felt the trembling of his voice.
Her gaze still locked on the boy, Suzu had nothing to say to the Hon as he asked for her help, and instead punched him square in the jaw where he stood. The Hon now back on the ground Suzu once again stood looking down on him, "Do not be mistaken Hon, I am not your friend." the disgust as she stated the obvious was evident on her face, "And that beast inside you is just that, a beast. It doesn't care about you, it doesn't care about your struggles. It wants nothing more than to be free, to bring wrath upon any it can."
She turned to leave but stopped to speak once more, "In some ways, that beast and me, are very much alike. Remember that boy." with her final words Suzu left the training field and the boy behind her.
Àki yelped out in pain as the hit struck, once again finding himself on the ground. He looked up at Rabbit, fear and anger mixed in his eyes. He was unsure what hurt more - the punch, or what she said.Or the way she said it[\i], he thought for himself. She was right, there was no denying that. But this way, Àki thought she would achieve just that. He didn't have to know a whole lot about Tailed Beasts to know it could have fatal consequences for him. As Rabbit left, similarizing herself with the Beast, Àki stood up and headed out after her, acknowledging her remark in her thoughts.
You made sure I will remember that for the rest of my life.[\i]
[ Miyoshi Yuki | Republican ANBU ]
[ Operation: Darkened Eyes ]
[ Nagi | Along the coast, traveling northwards. ]
The journey past the coast, following the trail of the previous Republican operatives, wasn't hard to catch on. The jounin had little to nothing to worry about as the state of Nagi, and her population weren't hostile towards them. Allowing the group of jounin to travel without much discomfort as they led their investigation.
Miyoshi wondered several times why the brass had sent only a small team of jounin. Following the early days of her investigation, Miyoshi couldn't find anything that pointed out to danger. The jounin seemed to head towards the various small villages that had been attacked, without tarrying too much around - something that Miyoshi could appreciate. For she was all too aware that the dogs of the regular force could take their sweet time, lacking the proper discipline and attitude that the real nin corp had.
Continuing the route, without attracting much attention to herself, Miyoshi arrived at the first village that had been wiped from the map. There wasn't a single building standing without severe damage. A sight that only showed suffering and destruction.
There wasn't much to discover in the destroyed village. Whoever had attacked the site, they made either sure that nothing could be traced back. That or too much time and meddling with the evidence had occurred that Miyoshi couldn't find anything useful.
Throwing a glance at the large bay, which the village was settled nearby, Miyoshi frowned slightly.
The rumours that surrounded the attacks were anything but fun. People spoke of ominous mist banks rolling from the sea into the land, heralding horrifying events. That horned demons swept in, killing and plundering. Those that survive only lingered behind because those demons found it an amusing prospect; to spread the story of their deeds and to make the population shivering. Ripe for future attacks.
Even with the increase in patrols, the culprits hadn't been sighted or discovered. Miyoshi didn't reckon that it was instantly evidenced for something supernatural; as many others seemed to give into. So far, all of these attacks spoke of a military approach - precise, fast and hard-hitting strikes. And leaving the tracks behind that, they wanted others to find.
The only thing that still eluded Miyoshi's investigation was who could behind it. Several culprits came to mind, but some made little sense. Certainly when it would be discovered who were behind it and provoking the Republican might.
A soft scoff escaped Miyoshi as she continued to travel to northwards, along the coast. If anything, the Republic seemed more and more the weaker component out of the five great nations. Yet, who were bold enough to risk the retaliation of the Republic's navy? Even worse; capable sufficient to make a flotilla of warships vanish?
Arriving at a farm, nearby one of the village that had been laid to waste, Miyoshi introduced herself to a few farmhands. They politely directed Miyoshi to the owner of the farm, a freeman, whose land was likely too far inland to be included in the past attack.
"Ah, yeah," the man grumbled, his accent being slightly heavier as he continued, "some people passed here. Though none like you, a musician," the man said, his eyebrows forming a frown on his brow. "Not many folks dare to travel too close to the coast with those damned demons."
Miyoshi flashed a disarming smile as her hands gently grabbed the wooden mug, in which her warm liquid was stored. Nodding, to emphasis that she agreed with the man's statement, Miyoshi replied in turn.
"That is true. I am careful, though, and luckily, I have some travel experience. Not to mention, I hope to reconnect with some dear friends of mine."
The freeman leaned back in his seat as he took Miyoshi's words, evidently weighing them before he spoke up. "Being careful doesn't seem to matter much with these foul things being interested in harming innocent people. And none of the local lords is willing to risk their hides to be diligent in fighting off a horde of demons. Yet, we still got to pay our damn taxes. Even the Republic failed us."
Miyoshi feigned surprise as she then frowned.
"The Republic isn't willing to do anything about it?" Miyoshi asked, her tone inviting the man to speak more of his thoughts or experience.
The freeman scoffed and nearly seemed to spit on the ground to emphasis his disgust, only to remind himself that he was inside his home. "A pack of Republican dogs came by. Acting all confident and ignoring my warnings of that they shouldn't hunt demons. Nothing good ever comes from hunting demons. My ol' nan used to tell me how to ward demons off. And that is the best you can do."
Miyoshi nodded now and then, only to take a small sip from her tea. color=gold]"So Republican soldiers came by? I reckon they now regret not listening to you, eh?"[/color]
The man grumbled as he shook his head. "Nay, they were worse than regular soldiers. Shinobi. A small pack of dogs, though. Not sure why they were just with four in total. I reckoned that whoever is controlling the military would know not to take demons lightly. I did pray for them but," a light shrug followed, "I reckon they are now being torn apart and used for unspeakable things by those demons."
Miyoshi nodded slowly. "Its a shame."
Many more encounters went the same as Miyoshi continued to travel to the latest site, where the demons had massacred a village and left a few alive to tell the tale. There were a few times that she had been able to talk a survivor, but there wasn't much that she could divulge from those encounters.
Interestingly, all survivors told the few things that were the same; the demons spoke a crude tongue that was alien and painful to the ears, they attacked moments later when a mist bank would roll into the village, the demons covered their faces and from their heads grew antlers and horns. Yet, what was most interesting to Miyoshi; the demons seemed to use steel weapons.
Weren't demons powerful enough to rip an adult man apart, with little effort? Not to mention, why would such monsters cover their faces? It seemed quite suspicious.
But who would wear helmets with horns and antlers? Miyoshi tried to go by her memory and knowledge, yet she couldn't come to more than guesses.
Deciding to lay off the guesses, Miyoshi threw a glance to the sky. The clear blue started to become darker, hinting that soon enough day would be replaced by night. Spotting up ahead a village, Miyoshi considered something.
What if she took a spot and tried to observe the place? There wasn't a pattern to the attacks, after all. Maybe the Divine would aid her in luck in being able to learn who was behind the attacks. Then she could take the information and head back to Kirigakure.
Finding a location that provided some visual sight of the village wasn't hard. The small hamlet was located at a bay, most beneficial for the local fishermen and what not - as an extensive dock was present. With darkness soon driving away from the light of day, Miyoshi could see lights going on in houses and buildings.
There was a sort of tranquillity that made Miyoshi ponder about trivial matters. What was life like in such a place? Were people happier than those who resided in a city, like Kirigakure?
More questions flowed through Miyoshi's mind, but they did little to distract the ANBU from her observation. Several times, she deployed her sensory technique; keeping as much as she could a watch over the hamlet. A task that brought a feeling of comfort and satisfaction, as nothing seemed to happen.
For hours, nothing occurred that warned Miyoshi that something was amiss. Until she finished some her rations and noticed an odd sensation, frowning, she quickly twisted her head to throw a glance at the village.
A thick mist rolled with the waves, creeping towards the village with an unnatural speed.
Immediately, Miyoshi's body tensed up. Her hands moved together, utilizing the sensory technique. But much to her surprise, her sensory technique clashed against what seemed to be a fast-moving wall. Upon collision, the Yuki's technique shattered quickly.
"Barrier technique," Miyoshi muttered underneath her breath as she tried to see what was happening. Where she could have seen homes and various small establishments or workplaces, the mist-shrouded them, it was causing Miyoshi's hair on her neck to rise.
Then she could hear it. The sounds of people yelling and screaming, followed by a terrible but familiar scent; something was burning.
Rising quickly, Miyoshi wanted to rush forward. Not to save the people that were underneath attack. But in hope to figure out once and for all who was behind these attacks.
Before she could move forward, something caused her to fall. A sensation of pain sharply rang through her left shoulder. Turning around, Miyoshi wanted to react, but another pang of sharp pain caused her to gasp for air.
"Þú ert minn," a voice spoke from Miyoshi's left before a boot firmly planted on the ANBU's left hand.
As Miyoshi glanced up, her eyes widened. She saw several figures that seemed to originate from some terrible nightmare. The dark of the night didn't allow Miyoshi to discern much past their rugged and vicious appearance.
"Maður er heimskur að fela okkur Vythlings." The one said, putting more pressure on Miyoshi's hand, a soft chuckle escaping the grim appearance. Another figure already crouched down.
"Sleep, well."
The two words were said with a particular accent that caused Miyoshi's eyes to widen once more. More than before did she attempt to resist before the figure's mailed glove slammed against her forehead - causing a veil of darkness to flow over Miyoshi's world.
"Chonobi..."
[ Operation: 'Sweet Arrival' ]
[ Team Republic 19 ]
[ A collaboration between @SilverPaw , @BlueFlameNikku and @Lesli ]
[ The team is instructed to travel to the Honey country, a vassal state of the Republic. Not much news has been received about the status of the vassal state. Despite whatever the team feels or thinks about the mission; they are assigned to a ship that heads to one of the Honey's ports. Their journey, however, isn't going too smoothly. ]
Sugi turned to face the massive creature as he heard it emerge from the water from behind. His eyes opened wide at its intimidating appearance, looking like it was some large malicious sea serpent or snake. "Oh crap." Having never seen a proper summon before let alone one like this, unnerved Sugi. The genin went about Nemie's shouted words as he saw her kunai bounce harmlessly off of the creature. He quickly reached into his back for a few seconds before swiftly throwing a kunai of his own up towards the creature's face, many of his haze clones appearing to do the same.
All of the haze clone projectiles would pass through the serpent entirely as they were simply illusions. Their real purpose was to mask the trajectory of the real kunai which looked to miss its mark, pinging off some scales just to the right of the creature's left eye. However, as it floated their for an instant a sudden smoldering sound could be heard as Sugi had attached a bomb tag to the end of his as it exploded with a thudding burst inches from the serpent's eye. At the very least he'd hope that would hinder that eye to some degree.
After that the red haired genin would do his best to mingle among his haze clones, using them to mask himself and his actions as they walked about and continued doing other seemingly random actions.
Sana nodded, gripping her katana tighter. She was observing the same shadow Neime was, but was still startled as the large scaly serpentine head surfaced with a hiss, its appearance and intentions menacing. She gulped, quickly refocused with a breath, and calmed herself. In the back of her mind, she noted that this summon was really impressive, and wondered if it would be just as effective on land as it was in the water.
She heard Neime's orders, but didn't manage to even nod in reply, since she was too busy watching the monster as well as her allies' actions. Neime's kunai bounced harmlessly off the scaly head, and Sugi attempted to distract and trick her. Sana prepared her chakra, waited for an opening, and when a decent opportunity showed itself, released a chakra shockwave slash in the direction of its eyes.
A loud screech resonated from the sea serpent, the small ash cloud from Sugi's explosive tag blown away. The waves started to rise, seemingly becoming more violent. Before the large creature could lash out once more, Sana's chakra shockwave rippled across the scales. Only to slice across the serpent's cornea - which was evident by the stream of blood that started to gush out of the monster's eye. Causing the monster to shake its head and unleash another deafening scream.
"Nice,"" Neime muttered as she focused to keep her balance. Noticing that the sea serpent was recovering from the previous attacks, Neime narrowed her eyes. There was little that she could achieve with her techniques.
Pulling out a kunai, she kept an eye on the monster's movement.
Trying to come up with a plan to drive the huge serpent away, Neime noticed how it started to dive once more into the water, becoming a large shadow underneath the waves.
"You guys okay?" Neime shouted, as she barely could see the genin with the large waves constantly breaking her sight on them - save it for the numerical Sugi haze clones.
"All good here!" Sugi sounded off as a billowing wave brought him up and down into and then out of Neime's line of sight. They seemed to have successfully disable to creature's sight but even as it dived back beneath the waves the genin knew it was only marginally hindered by this. "If it is like other serpents then it can still locate us reliably even without sight." He chimed to his squadmates. It was then that Sugi hatched a plan. The numerous haze clones fazed away, Sugi dismissing them so as to conserve chakra before creating a water clone beside him. Sugi and clone in tow made their way over to rendezvous with Neime. "Senpai, Sana!" He called out before he began pulling out all the paper bombs he had left and started attaching them to his water clone as he shared his plan. "I bet the inside of that thing isn't as protected as the outside. If we can get this clone inside it in any way I bet it can cause at least enough damage to dismiss it. Can you two add in any paper bombs you can spare?"
With the creature blinded the plan seemed more plausible than if it wasn't but there were still unknown factors. Was it going to use jutsu or other abilities? Sugi had to plan with what he knew which was far less intel than he fancied.
Sana flinched at the resounding screech of the injured serpent, but didn't let it disturb her focus. The waves made her slightly dizzy, but she pushed down any hints of nausea - it was a bit different standing on the riotous waves herself than it had been to ride the ship, but it wasn't too bad, and the chakra control to keep her on her feet was practically done automatically by her at this point, so Sana wasn't truly concerned about falling into the sea. The serpent submerged, and Sana's heartbeat quickened, her eyes tracking the shadow beneath their feet carefully. She didn't like the idea that it could open its mouth underneath them and jump up to swallow them all.
"I am fine," she answered, shouting back to make herself heard. Sugi also was alright, though she could barely see either of them with all of the high waves rising and falling. She ran to get as close to both of them as she could, avoiding the highest peaks of the water's ridge. Her lips thinned when Sugi confirmed her suspicions that the monster serpent could still locate them easily while they, being only humans without any special sight abilities, could not. By the time her fellow genin asked her and senpai to come closer, Sana was more than two thirds of her way there already, so it did not take long for her to arrive. She listened to Sugi's plan, and nodded. "Sounds good. Hope we can get it in," she said, as she opened her pouches and handed over all the paper bombs she had on her, helping to attach them to the clone.
Relieved at the sight of the two genin being fine and not suffering a single scratch, Neime turned her head to see if she could catch a glimpse of the serpent. The dreadful creature vanished into the depths and Sugi's words didn't do much to comfort Neime.
"Yeah, that beast won't be hampered that much," Neime said, as she then frowned when Sugi suggested his plan. In truth, she didn't like it that much. There were a couple of factors that could make the plan fail horrible or succeed. But the harsher truth was; she had nothing else in mind that could stop a hue sea-serpent. And they really needed that beast dead or gone. Else, the enemy vessels would catch up and then they were facing worse odds.
"Well, lets see how this goes," Neime said as she grabbed a few of her explosive tags - aiding the other two in preparing their makeshift bomb. Once done, Neime threw a look at the waves. There was no large shadow moving around, so far she could spot. Then without a warning, something dark seemed to manifest around them. Rapidly coming upwards, the soft glint of various rows of yellow teeth came into sight.
"Spread!"
Shouting the command, Neime tried to get away, only for a wave to obstruct her path as the serpent was about to come up and try to devour those that had dared to harm him.
Sugi looked on confidently now, since the two agreed and were going about assisting with the plan of action. With the water clone becoming covered in patches of paper bombs, the genin mentally went through the checklist as to how the clone will detonate itself at the right time. The red head would look at Sana and smirk nervously. "Heh, so do I. But if my hunch is correct, it---" Sugi failed to finish what he was saying as the sea became noticeably darker beneath his feet, looking down only to see a maw of teeth; a truly horrifying sight indeed. The feeling of his hair standing on end, Sugi leapt backwards scattering just as Neime said to do. Mid leap the genin could look back to see Neime was stuck. There was no time to think, Sugi's water clone rushed over to Neime's side to forcefully attempt at shoving her out of harm's way wherever there wasn't a blocking wave. It'd look similar to a classic self sacrificing maneuver, only of course the suited up bomb clone was meant to be eaten by this serpent.
Through all of the commotion the genin would lose concentration on his chakra control however, causing him to fall into the sea though he was out of the immediate attack area.
Her fears of the serpent appearing right underneath them came through, and Sana's eyes widened minutely at the imminent threat. She jumped back, obeying Neime's command without hesitation. She watched, only slightly worried, as her senpai's path was obstructed by a wave. She was sure the chuunin could extract herself from there, however, and moreover, Sugi's water clone was in prime position to get swallowed as it ran as if to help Neime. Instead, she kept retreating in about the same direction Sugi had fled.
Speaking of her fellow genin though, Sana frowned when she could suddenly see him nowhere. It was possible a wave had obstructed him or had carried him away somewhere but...She'd been relatively close to him this time, and hadn't seen where he went. Glancing at Neime and the water clone occasionally, Sana began checking underneath the waves as well as around her, just in case. At some point, she thought she saw an appropriately sized and coloured smudge under the water, and jogged there, sticking her hand in to grab at it.
Neime's eyes widened as Sugi's clone moved forward, shoving her. Releasing her chakra control, she plummeted into the wave that initially blocked her way from the serpent's jaws.
A resounding sound of two jaws slamming shut moved through the air. The sound was intense enough to give an eerie sensation as if a minor shockwave was produced.
Blinking twice, Neime saw how the scales moved in front of her, a few inches away as the giant serpent would slowly plummet itself once more into the dark depths of the waters. A few tags that had been rigged to the water clone were drifting in front of her - causing Neime to pull the rope around her waist and start to move away.
Gasping for air as she came to the surface, the chuunin attempted to use chakra to climb on the rough water. Looking around, she couldn't catch a glance of the genin but saw the two other ropes.
Catching her breath first for a few seconds, Neime started to make her way over. Keeping her balance on another large wave, she spotted Sana sticking her hand into the water surface.
"You guys okay?" Neime shouted, slowly descending together with the wave as she wondered if they could still make the tags explode.
Sugi handley swam his way back up towards the surface straight at the submerged hand. With the help of Sana and Sugi's rope, the genin surfaced with a gasp taking in that sweet air. "Th-thanks Sana."" Regaining his bearings Sugi went about standing upon the bobbing waves once more with his team just as Neime relinked up no less. "Yeah yeah, no sweat. Just lost focus for a sec." Sugi assessed what he'd missed putting everything together as the clone was gone and the serpent submerged once more. After taking a moment to catch his breath Sugi began talking again but with a smirk. "Senpai, you gotta stop looking so worried all the time. Have a little more confidence in us huh." After taking the casual jab at Neime, Sugi took a knee and formed the snake hand seal. The irony of the situation was palatable for the genin. This serpent would be undone by the very hand seal made after it. Just like in the academy, Sugi remotely detonated the paper bombs that were infused with his chakra. This would more than likely set off Sana's and Neime's bombs as well without requiring them to do the same. The water clone was of course destroyed but it did its job at delivering the bombs where they were needed.
Sana helped pull out Sugi, which due to their combined efforts was not as difficult as she'd feared it would be. "No problem," she replied, offering him a very small smile. To Neime, she said, "Well, we are all wet as rats for the effort, I see, but otherwise alright," joining with her own mild attempt at levity. She looked on curiously as Sugi detonated the paper bombs remotely, head swiveling on reflex towards where she'd last seen the serpent submerge. She hoped whatever happened to it would be visible; she wanted confirmation that they were successful in eliminating it.
Arriving at the genin, Neime was glad. Their mission hadn't officially begun until they had reached the vassal state. To already lose someone on the way was anything but a boost for morale. Watching Sugi performing the seal, Neime was very much the same regarding Sana; she wanted some sort of evidence that the creature was dealt with - that it couldn't slow them down.
Without warning, water splashed just near them into the air - reaching meters high and producing a thunderous sound, as if the Divine had decided to empower the lethal combustion of the explosive tags. Waves, larger than before, would turn into a darker colour. Upon close sight as the waves reached the three, it would be easy to see the subtle crimson colour of blood. As a drizzle fell down, the already soaked clothes of the nin started to gain some reddish stains.
"Suppose that took care of it," Neime mumbled, watching how small parts started to drift upwards. Soon enough, the stain started to rapidly increase in space. Yet, Neime waited a few seconds before she decided to call it.
"Good, we can go back now." she told the genin, raising her right hand to point to the vessel with her thumb.
Lowering her hand, a smile dawned on Neime's lips. "You guys did great. I suppose we earned some rest now."
Using the rope and chakra focused at her boots to climb back up to the railing, Neime would offer a hand to the genin that likely followed her. Before untying the rope around her waist, Neime threw a look at the horizon. They had only spotted one vessel with black sails. But now as they were back onboard, they could see various vessels sporting the same ominous sails.
"We should be able to outpace them," Neime said, deciding to share her thoughts, "but that is very odd. Pirates don't seek a fight with a Republican warship, if they can avoid it."
Undoing the rope around her waist, she would gesture to Sana and Sugi to take it easy. Walking away, various marines and deckhands seemed to be in good spirits. Keeping a respectable distance, most of them gave a subtle sign of approval; a thumbs up, a nod, a smile and some even mumbling a soft thanks.
Returning with some blankets Neime first handed them to the genin before wrapping one around herself.
"Got to say, I hope that we won't be so soaked the next fight."
Sugi felt a wave of satisfaction wash over him as the pillar of water erupted upwards. The numerous crimson stains billowing up from beneath the waves along with pieces of the creature cementing its final fate. The genin was only slightly annoyed at his clothes being so heavily damped, primarily due to the blood mix into the water.
The genin admittedly was a little sour that Neime didn't give him a bit more credit or acknowledgement for his plan working out. He wouldn't let it show however, masking it with a smile directed towards most of the appreciative crew after reboarding the vessel.
Relaxing now, Sugi accepted the towel and went about drying himself off. He'd have a puzzled look about him as the identity of the now numerous ships that they were now outpassing was brought to light. He left the towel dropped over his head as he thought out loud. "I doubt it's some kind of mistake on their part. It could be out of desperation. War tends to cause easy target trading ships to become more scarce. There is always the possibility of them acting as mercenaries too." Sugi would smirk towards Neime. "Hey Sana, it's official. The key to beating Neime-senpai in our next spar is we just gotta keep splashing her with water. It's clearly her weakness."
The moment they were all waiting and hoping for arrived; water sprouted up meters up as swiftly as a geyser erupting. It was a lot more satisfying than that though, especially with the blood and chunks of meat, which were all evidence that they had successfully slayed the serpent. Sana clenched a palm in victory, performing a small vertical fist pump on the level of her wait; a subdued but still visible reaction of her excitement.
Sana nodded when Neime told them they could return, but did not relax until they were finally on board of the vessel once again, her adrenaline gradually subsiding. She'd feared and partially expected there would be more than that one summon to face, but was glad it had been something on a scale that they were actually able to deal with. It was odd how many of the black sailed ships there were, and she thought Sugi's interpretations about their motives were quite reasonable.
Then again, if she thought about it herself, she didn't really have any good ideas for their actions. Was the one ship they'd sent ahead on purpose, to scout and detain their opposition until the rest of the fleet arrived? Or was it simply that they only had one ship fast enough to act while the rest could only sail behind and hope to catch up? Also, did they intend to pursue them? And how come they hadn't fired any projectiles or the like? Thoughtful and head swirling with questions, Sana didn't react much to the crewmembers' gestures of gratitude beyond the occasional vague nod.
She shook out of the slight daze when Neime threw a warm, comfy towel at her, which Sana promptly wrapped herself into. "It is surprisingly cold…" she commented mildly. Privately, she thought it was exceptionally good that getting soaked was all they suffered, though she also realized that Neime was once again joking or otherwise trying to lift up the mood with her remark. That was why Sana's own approach wasn't as stiff and formal as it might otherwise be.
Sugi seemed especially comfortable with the levity, however, and seemed to join in with ease and eagerness. "Splashing? I don't know about that," she pitched in, tone slightly dubious. As a smile spread across her face, however, she continued, "I'm sure there's a more effective weakness...like tickling. Or spiders. Hmm?" She turned inquiringly towards the person in question, raising both eyebrows at her, while her smile momentarily transformed into a grin.
Surprised, Neime turned her attention to the genin - as they began to comment on how to defeat her. What would have likely caused Neime to stay silent and ignore the comments, she couldn't help and fail at suppressing a small laugh.
"We'll see.~"
[ Empire of Akino | Amthyr ]
[ Kiyomi Homura - First empress of Akino | Kensuke Nimatsu - A Scholae of Akino ]
The royal envoy continued on their way. There was no clear sign that they had dealt with a bloody ambush. The Sworn Swords that were visible seemed in mint condition; their armour and uniforms only stained with the mud and rain that had troubled them the last two days.
Some wagons concealed with their textile, covering those who got wounded in the last skirmish against the zealots. None of the Sworn Sword had perished in the fight, as a result of the careful preparation. In one of the carriages, however, sat just two people.
Kensuke glanced up from the small note as he noticed that the young monarch seemed absent-minded.
"Are you okay?" Kensuke decided to ask, after an uncomfortable silence. Ever since he and a few Sworn Swords had managed to find Kiyomi in the designated 'safe place', she had been absent. Nothing out of the ordinary, though. Unlike many of her age peers, she seemed much less frail and concerned about the harsh reality of death in their vocations.
Yet, something seemed to be different this time.
"If you want, I can see if they can bring you something to drink. Though I doubt we will have anything warm," Kensuke continued, hoping to provoke a conversation. Instead, all he got was a sideways glance.
Frowning as she turned back to the window, staring outside, Kensuke considered his options. What was the danger asking an ambitious girl that had tamed a Bijuu, was an empress, trained by some of the most lethal shinobi in history, what was bothering her? Right? It wasn't like she could conjure and control enough lightning to make a person explode from the violent energy.
"If something---"
"I am thinking," the words came out softly but had a sharp tone. Her head slightly shifted to throw another sideways look at Kensuke. The usual bright green in the girl's eyes was dark. Almost like shadows were concealing the joy and usually good-humoured nature.
"I didn't mean to," Kensuke began, but once more she cut him off sharply.
"Of course, you didn't," Kiyomi said, her lips curling slightly downwards.
The frown stayed on Kensuke's brow as he crossed his arms out front of his chest. His luck with the fairer sex had never been that amazing. But he always had it easy with Kiyomi. The girl liked swords, fighting and indulging into matters that would put many more girly peers into horrified gasps.
Wanting to say something, Kensuke decided to remain silent. Whatever had caused her to be in a bad mood wasn't his concern, yet. Leaning back against the comfortable pillows, Kensuke closed his eyes as he placed his hands behind his head.
The travel towards Amthyr was coming to its end. In the distance, two enormous hills arose. It seemed out of place, as the surrounding area lacked anything to justify the odd geographical landmarks. In the further distance, mountains were visible. As the royal envoy travelled further, a broad and long-winded river became visible.
Slowly but surely, more features started to become more evident as the envoy made their way over. A large number of tents were set up, and a lot of activity seemed to concentrate around the massive hills, with their cliffs. On top of the hills was something white, as if the people had moved ice from the distant mountain peaks to adorn the two hills.
Upon arrival, several people seemed to await the royal envoy. Servants rushed to take care of the horses as the Sworn Swords adopted a new formation, even remaining vigilant as they appeared to be in friendly territory.
Exiting her carriage, Kiyomi ignored the mud that splashed against her boots. Sighting a few men approaching her, she turned and awaited them to speak up.
The men introduced themselves as the heads of construction, logistics and planning of Amthyr, the supposed future 'pearl' of the Akinian empire. Construction was going as planned as the men invited Kiyomi to take a look from the tall hills that towered above everything. Accepting the invitation, Kiyomi and her entourage followed the men. Taking a long route, the men explained to their empress on how the construction was going.
It was far from complete as her Majesty's demands weren't easy to achieve. The two large hills were made with both conventional labour effort as with the usage of various ninjutsu, to enhance the progress and speed. A few problems had occurred but none too severe to halt the overall progress. If the current pace would continue, the men were optimistic that over five or six years, the foundation would be near completion.
Kensuke threw a sideways look at Kiyomi, who was at his right. She listened but didn't ask questions or seemed to make any comments - which was unlike her. Finding the behaviour odder with each passing moment, he decided to wait a bit longer - for he figured asking her right in the presence of others would only result in provoking her anger.
As they reached the top of the hill, the company was granted with a spectacular view. The landscape was dominated by green, within the far distance grey mountains and their white peaks. Shimmering blue, the nearby river sprawled into the horizon, venturing far past their vision.
The base of large structures positioned behind them, in the middle of the hill as a large number of workers tirelessly continued.
But at the bottom of the two cliffs, one could see that more constructions sites, where labourers continued to toil on dozens of projects.
The large hall seemed to resemble something of the royal palace in Konohagakure. Safe it for the fact it wasn't elaborately decorated and subtle differences in style.
Seated on a chair, Kiyomi read the reports. Her eyes wandered the parchment that introduced her to new events that had transpired, while she had been busy with the zealots. Slowly but surely, her eyebrows started to perk up.
One of the events that the report brought up was the Unkei clan butchering the Hanta clan.
"Iroh," Kiyomi said, her tone soft. Yet, the facial expression spoke volumes, "notify that I accept the invitation to meet with the Unkei leaders. And schedule that meeting with Lord Tokugawa. I am most interested in what evidences they have to show me. Alert the Lord Commander, that I desire him to be present for a meeting as well."
Iroh made a simple nod as he wrote something down. Just as Kiyomi was about to continue, the doors opened, and Kensuke walked into the large hall. The soft sound that the Nimatsu made with his armour, as he closed in the distance and performed a small bow, seemed to disrupt the odd tranquillity.
"Your Majesty?"
Looking up from the report, Kiyomi nodded subtly.
"Good. I was hoping you could do something important for me. Iroh? Would you mind handling the other affairs?"
The Sworn Sword made a small bow before taking his leave, thus leaving Kiyomi alone with Kensuke. Settling her attention on the tall Nimatsu, Kiyomi continued.
"I need you to travel towards what is the Oracle of the Twins. I have a few questions that I want someone to ask them. And then, of course, bring me the answers." Kiyomi paused as she frowned slightly. "I would have wanted to go myself, but there are some events that I can't ignore or send people like Zakito to. Not to mention, this seems like a walk in the park. But the Earth country is embroiled into a civil war. Then there are bandits and the like. You know the drill basically, it is unsafe and you need to be wary."
As Kensuke didn't ask anything in return, Kiyomi continued. "There is, however, some more at stake. The fact is that the Oracle might be affiliated or in connection with something old. Nothing to mess with either, mind you. I can't explain everything, but this is what you must remember..."
Seated upon his mount, Kensuke had adopted gear that was more suited for travelling. The open road ahead of him was alluring and promised an escape from the painful and gruesome matters of politics, dealing with a teenage jinchuriki and whatnot.
Spurring his mount to increase the pace, Kensuke couldn't help but imagine that he could drag out the journey for a few days - to make sure he wouldn't return during some political meeting of some sort.
Walking over the road, Ryo's gaze was focused on the skyline in front of him. Large walls rose with even taller towers. What caught Ryo's attention was the fact that they were severely damaged. It nearly appeared as if the city up ahead just had gone through a devastating siege; one that seemed forgotten or ignored - as everyone in sight seemed to be in a splendid mood.
The paved road towards the massive city gates was lined up on the sides by stands. It was a strange occurrence in Ryo's mind; why would people trade and do such business outside the city? What if vagabonds, brigands or the sort would take their chance?
Then he saw it; it was immense.
Its skin was gnarly and dark-greyish. The massive tusks made the appearance of the large animal even weirder; but also imposing. Its small black eyes seemed to take the world with a casual, even lazy approach. Then the massive creature flapped its vast ears, something that nearly made Ryo stop in his tracks, in both awe and anticipation for the beast to trash its surroundings.
"Elephant," Tao mumbled, loud enough for Ryo to catch on to.
"What," Ryo responded, throwing a quick look at the boy before back at the massive creature. People were busy to unpack some bags that were present on the animal's sides.
"That," Tao subtly pointed to the animal that had captivated Ryo's attention, "is an elephant. You don't have those in the west?" Tao asked softly, a curiosity evident as he awaited Ryo's response.
"No," Ryo answered as his attention stayed with the dark-grey animal. "We got quite the monsters, but nothing that is, like, that." Briefly Ryo flinched as the odd trunk of the animal was raised, only for the beast to bellow a loud sound.
The pair continued to walk down the road as Tao would explain more of where they were.
"This is one of the cities that were under the rule of the Sevudians. But Rong managed to break and conquer it, like many other places. Driving the Sevudian nobility away and installing their own rule in its stead." Tao paused as they were nearing on the gates. Many Rongese soldiers were present, checking those who desired entry into the city.
"This is one of the cities that they left intact. See the damage?" Tao waited as Ryo subtly nodded, "The Rongese refuse to rebuild those defences. It is a statement and a reminder."
Ryo didn't want or need to ask what Tao meant with that. These last week or two, he had learned much about how the Rénese operated. In a way, they were similar to the Taika of the western continent. But not too similar, as the Rénese had conducts of honour that vastly opposed that of the Taika.
After waiting some time, Ryo and Tao were allowed to approach the gate guards. The guards appeared nothing more than the soldiers that Ryo had killed before; they lacked a proper uniform and appeared to be more brigands than actual men of the military, in Ryo's vision.
One of the guards raised his hands and stated in Rén for the two to halt, as two other guards approached to inspect what the two carried with them.
"Jiàn shì," Tao stated as the guard in control asked what they were doing. An answer that made the guards frown and seemed to be more careful. Ryo noticed that one of them even slightly drew his blade out of the scabbard.
"Looking for work. Hunting rebels is what we specialise in," Tao confidently continued, his eyes locked with the soldier in charge.
The man scoffed and then demanded some coin, allowing the two to enter the city after their payment.
Leaving the gate guards behind, to continue their 'task', Ryo threw a sideways look at Tao. "Jiuan.. shi?"
"Yes, those who offer their service for money. Most that deserted their fractured kingdom offer that to the Rongese military. " The boy explained as he continued to walk beside Ryo.
"Ah, like that. We tend to call those mercenaries," Ryo replied, "though they come into all shapes and forms, I suppose. Now then, let us first find a good establishment."
The street was occupied with all kinds of people, from beggars that pleaded for some generosity, to armed guards strolling down the road, causing what to be appeared honest folk to step aside and continue onwards.
"So, what now?" Tao asked, unable to hide his curiosity any longer. "Are you going to try to kill every Rongese with your sword and skills?"
"No," Ryo calmly answered, leaning against the wooden wall as he kept looking through the open window. "I suppose I can take down some guards. But they're way too many. And killing them won't be a solution," he mumbled the last part, a frown forming on his brow. Somehow, he could already hear the sarcastic clapping of Kensuke in the back of his mind - applauding him for considering better ways to deal with the enemy presence.
"It won't? But they are the enemy, aren't they? How will you then defeat them?" Tao asked, a hint of confusion mixing with Ryo took for disappointment.
"It won't, no. If I even manage to kill somehow every single Rongese soldier in this city, who will then rule? These people? They already seem to accept Rongese rule. Abide by the Rongese laws and whatnot. No, if I kill the soldiers, then Rong will respond in turn. Either sending more troops or punishing those who are innocent."
It stayed silent between Ryo and Tao for a while.
"However, I don't aim to sit here and wait patiently." Turning his head, he looked at Tao. "You spoke before of these... rebels, yeah? Tell me more about them. Maybe we could try to contact some of them. Set up a sort of alliance, and then we could do something as taking back cities and be like heroes."
