Operation Ranzaki Target - Part 1
[ Lightning Country - Sanosuke clan heartlands | Near the city of Reistara ]
[ Hojo unit composed out of Steel Sentinels - Part of Plot 'Ranzaki Target' ]

They were moving into position. Under the cover of night, the split groups of Hojo operatives made sure that they weren't noticed. After all, they had made it this far and the amount of preparation to see them get this far shouldn't be wasted. Proud of his unit being able to achieve the point of no return, Okitsugu was well aware that only a small number of the current unit would be alive. The others would give their life to see the ambitions of their lord and clan be done.

The snow cracked softly underneath the weight of their boots as the Hojo operatives moved into their position. Laying low and under the cover of both night and the spare foliage that could be utilized. Silence dawned upon them as they observed the city in the distance. The strong fortifications wouldn't budge to around two dozen of Steel Sentinels. Not if they would launch a direct attack on the section of wall, supplemented by towers and a moat.

Okitsugu would raise himself slightly to throw a look at the right. Making a gesture, a part of the unit would get up and move as silent as they could forward. The fields that they had to cross didn't give them much cover against any vigilant guard that would stand watch or do patrols on the stone fortified structures. Yet, the Hojo would manage as they slipped from cover to cover. The pace was painstaking slow as the Hojo attempted to close in the distance to the moat.
Arriving close to the moat, the next part of the plan came up. Their objective wasn't to just take any Sanosuke life on their way. The main goal was far more valuable than to rid the world of any barbaric Chonobi presence.

A pair of Hojo would move to the moat, crouched and silent. Their camouflaged robes would allow them to blend in well with the snow covered ground. Upon reaching the moath, the two operatives would pull their instruments. One pulled out some rope and handed over a stake-like instrument to the other Hojo. The Hojo that took the stake would throw his white coat down.
Slowly and carefully, the coat-less Hojo would move into the water. Once he would be submerged completely, there was a long moment of silence.

A smile cracked on Okitsugu's lips as he could see the movement. The diver would move to the surface and place the stake at the wall. It was clear that he did so carefully, trying to wedge the sharp point between the stones and making sure it would stick properly. As that was done, Okitsugu was aware that this was going to be the moment of his forces splitting up.

The majority of the unit would follow the lead of somebody that Okitsugu had appointed. Watching the larger part of his unit leaving, Okitsugu turned to the task at hand. To infiltrate and escort the Ranzaki heir back to Kosami's Hold.

[ Nishi Hirashima | Jounin of Team 11 ]

Nishi watched as the team would do as she instructed them. Taking the moment to observe their skill with throwing small weaponry like shuriken and kunai, she already saw that they weren't performing to their liking. Watching the genin, she was content in the fact that they didn't moan and complain about anything. While their accuracy wasn't optimal, their technique of throwing wasn't lacking. In Nishi's observation, she could determine that they just needed more experience in handling small weaponry and throwing them.

Expecting better results from the chuunin, Nishi wondered for a moment what Kukiko would think upon seeing her niece's perfomance. The chuunin hit ratio was clearly higher than the genin. But it wasn't that superior. Understanding that the chuunin relied a lot on her kekkei genkei to do the dirty work, Nishi clicked her tongue softly as she considered the next stage of the training.

"You lot can try to catch your breath." Nishi instructed as she threw a final look at the results of their attempts to hit the bullseye. Turning her attention at the chuunin and genin, Nishi slightly tilted her head to the right. "I want each of you to state what your weakness is. I want you to argue why it is your weakness and how you believe that you can overcome it." The eyes of the woman narrowed slightly. Then she spoke again, her voice being stern and close to being as cold as the breeze that passed the field.

"And just to make sure you lot pay close attention, I will consider if your answer is well enough. If not? Then not you but the two others will be forced to skip lunch. So use this moment wisely to consider your answer." Raising her right hand slowly, Nishi would wait before she then spoke again. "If by some chance, each of you give me an answer that is to my satisification, I will allow you to ask me a question before we will move on to the next part of training."

Weaknesses

[ Republic of the Water Country | The City of Shigaa ]
[ Hikari Torimoto | Genin of Team 11 ]

Feeling tired, Hikari heard Nishi telling them they can stop and catch their breath. Lowering her right hand, which was ready to throw another kunai, she placed it back in her pouch as she listened to the next set of instructions the jounin had for them. And the instructions they were given certainly made the genin feel surprised and a bit nervous.

She decided to take a moment to collect her thoughts and think about the answer, while also gathering her thrown shuriken and kunai. Her weakness? The first thing that came to her mind was her experience. Or rather, lack of experience. She was a fresh genin from the academy. This was her first ever mission, or perhaps assignment, on the field, and with a team. She couldn't say she specialized in anything in particular either, but she figured that wasn't something that was mandatory. It was useful, but not a necessity.

"I'll go first, if I may," Hikari spoke up, putting the weapons into her pouch before continuing to speak "I think my most obvious weakness would be my lack of experience. And not in anything in particular, but more overall. I lack experience on the field, in different fighting styles, in many things that would be essential for a shinobi to be experienced in. I am fresh out of the academy, so that would be the biggest weakness I have. My inexperience can serve as a weakness for the entire team."

As Hikari finished speaking, she moved her gaze between her teammates before locking her sight on Hirashima-sensei. She hoped her answer was sufficient and logical, as going for something more specific would've been difficult for her. There were still many fields she lack confidence in, and knew well that she would likely not perform to many's liking if she was tested.

What Is One's Weakness?
Claire Rose
Team 11 Genin
Shigaa, Training Grounds

Once Nishi had inspected their shuriken and kunai training she began to speak up. From the tone of her voice she seemed a bit annoyed with the team and what she observed. The jounin went to ask the team about what they deemed as their weakness, making sure they gave the question thought by giving a reward or punishment if satisfaction was met or not. Hikari was the first to answer Nishi, seeing her lack of experience the weakness she brought. Of course Claire felt the same, even though she has been training she felt she would lack experience for some time. Giving a nod to the other she smiled and looked at Nishi. Taking a second to answer she began.

"I believe my weakness would also be a lack of experience even though I have been in the field before. Of course I also believe my emotional control is also a weakness. One would get better over time and gain more experience but changing yourself to be stronger mentally is more challenging than physical training." Taking a few moments to continue she caught her breath and looked at her sickle on her hip. "I can let my feelings cloud my judgement and those feelings need to be stable or else it can bring bad results in the field or even death. I can learn to overcome that if I really try to separate personal matters with work."

Setting her eyes back on Nishi she gave a small smile and bow. "And with our conversation back home it has opened my eyes some on how to become better with emotional control. I may still falter here and there like I have stated that day but I am slowly making progress. Once I learn to get out of my head and to be more controlling over my emotions I am sure my training in the field will also get better." Finishing her answer she looked at Yukimi and wondered what the girl would say before giving their leader her attention once more.

Though there is a bit of tension due to the two bearing origin from vastly different places, the training goes well. Despite Dagrún not making the training easy for Mamoru, the Senju manages to learn various things from the Hon. The training ends with a rather interesting development as Dagrún makes a suggestion to try to teach Mamoru later again.. ]

The morning was arriving too early for most. Lieutenants would round up their men and almost drag or shout them to the most nearby field to drill and train. A miserable and painful existence if you weren't used to it. Yet Mamoru would be woken up by a bucket of cold water poured over him.
"Rise and shine," Dagrún's voice resonated for a moment. "You are wasting valuable daylight in here, come on."

Exiting the tent with her bucket, Dagrún rolled with her shoulders. A smirk was crossed on her lips as she dropped the bucket and would await Mamoru to leave his tent. She was somewhat curious to what the Senju could do but had already decided to rein in some harsher methods to push him to his limits.

Squirming a bit as he heard the zipper of the tent pulled down, with the unmistakable barking of their superiors for the beginning of the exercices, Mamoru was just about to wake up. In the second the cold water from the bucket splashed over him, he was still half asleep. It woke him up in a second and in instinct, he placed right hand on the sealing scroll next to his bed, undoing the seal on Oak. Sitting up, he held the scabbard down with his left hand and grasped the hilt, quickly unsheathing the blade and pointing it at the entrance of the tent." Dagrún! What's the - what's wrong with you?!" he growled, but she was already out of the tent, and he was supposed to follow him. He let out a sigh shook his head.

Five minutes later, he was exiting his tent, dressed in his training garb, with all of his gear on the scrolls on his waist. He looked around and quickly found Dagrún and ran after her." You got one hell of a way of waking up people, Dagrún. Good morning to you as well!" he replied, half grumbling as he walked after her. He was curious about what kind of training will he receive from his teammate he regarded as the fiercest, and perhaps the one who made him a bit worried.

"Aye, that I do. Be glad that we aren't too close to the stables. You would have prefered cold water then, boy," Dagrún replied as she shot a glance to their right. "Today, I managed to get some time to train you. So you are under my tutelage until afternoon. Though, don't be too happy," gesturing that he should follow her, Dagrún started to walk. "You are assigned to patrol duty this night. So going to be a harsh time for you, haha!"

Leading Mamoru through the laid out structures of tents, the Hon would end up leading him to a training field. It was divided in a large field where a lieutenant barked instructions at his unit. But there were a few small parts that weren't occupied and ringed off by a simple 'fence' of wood quickly slammed together.
"In you go," Dagrún would tell Mamoru as she would go and fetch a few training weapons. "So I heard that our cap' would like me to train you in handling weapons."
Dropping the box into the tile, Dagrún would vault easily over it. Sniffing and proceeding to spit on the muddy ground, Dagrún turned her gaze back at Mamoru.

"I assume you like to use those curved blades that you Taika folk are so jolly about. 'Bout, however, I teach a bit of different things? A sword is nice but it isn't the best weapon all around."

I have no idea what she means by that, and on the other hand I don't want to know, Mamoru thought for himself. Something told him that one day, he would know and it will happen in a similar manner. So he is going to train for a good part of the day with Dagrún alone. His curioisty about the training that will take place and her training methods started to get the better out of him as he eagerly followed Dagrún - no surprise, to the training grounds. He thought about getting some rest before his night patrol duty, but he figured this was a good way of preparation as well. As he was told to get in the ring, he did so and turned to look at Dagrún, listening to her words."That's true! Meilin Sense told me you're the one I should seek out."

Mamoru than observed as Dagrún walked back to their training area with a box that without a doubt held their training equipment. He then raised his eyebrows a bit as he heard Dagrún mention " Taika folk being jollz " about their traditional weapons, but he decided to let it slide.
"Yes, we prefer the use of our traditional weapons. Tell me than, what's the best weapon all around."

"Your wit," Dagrún said, though the amusement in her voice made it hard to know if she was serious or not. Grabbing two poles out of the box, Dagrún would reach one out towards Mamoru. "For now though, some simple basics. And instead of swords, we will use these staffs. Or well, blunten spears if you want to visualize some weapon at it."

Letting him take the staff, Dagrún would size Mamoru up with her eyes. "I wasn't told much about your competence. But I do know that we likely have a few differences in styles and what not. My first instruction, however, is to forget about all that classy stuff." Letting a pause fall in between them, Dagrún decided to ask a question. Judging by her tone, she was dropping some amusement of training a genin.
"Ever been in a real scuffle? Killed a person during it?"

Mamoru undoubtedly felt surprised at the answer, but thinking about them for a brief second, they made perfect sense. Checking out the pole, he reached out for and it took it, adjusting his hold onto it to grab it in the middle of it. He checked out the spear and gauged it's length. He had some basic skill with using a spear, and he believed that Dagrún greatly outclassed him in this regard. Still, he decided to stand his ground at whatever was coming his way, and raised his sight at Dagrún, listening to her. And her final question shocked him.

It took him a few seconds to regain his bearings, all the classy stuff she mentioned was gone. His chest was heaving at a rapid pace and shook his head."N-No! I haven't been in a real combat situation … nor did I take a life." He replied. He knew that he could not say this for long. He knew what awaits him in the near future, and that it will either be kill or be killed. He hoped he could make it out in one piece, but he dreaded the thought about what he will have to do in order to make it.

Staring at the genin, Dagrún simply nodded upon hearing his answer. A silence would plague the atmosphere in between them, only disturbed mildly by the ambience of the Imperial camp and its people. "Huh, okay." Was the rather anticlimactic answer of the young woman, who frowned a little.

"Well shit, boy. You're going to face a heavy time then. Anyhow, show me what kind of stance you would take with that 'weapon'." Dagrún instructed, deciding to use her own 'spear' to support her weight as she leaned on it.

Feeling more and more out of his element at the plaguing silence ensuing between them. He heard the shouts coming from the nearby group training, but he did not register the words. Restating what he already knew, Mamoru swallowed hard.Opening stance, he mentally commanded himself his body to move. He placed his weight on his right leg and crouched, sliding his dominant hand in front of him. His right hand extended and grasped the spear the same way than before, his left hand grasping the rear end of the spear, glancing at Dagrún.

Observing Mamoru for a moment, Dagrún decided to inspect the genin's stance. Frowning as she seemed to take him serious, in all of a sudden, Dagrún would plant the staff behind a leg and use her free hand to shove Mamoru hard - causing him to fall on his back.
"Remember, classy shite won't save you. If you are on your back in the midst of a heated battle. Regardless if it is with only steel or ninjutsu, you are dead weight. Stay alert and you might survive." Dagrún said as she would take a few steps away to give Mamoru time to get up from the wet mud.

"Once more, show me a stance, boy."

Mamoru gasped in surprise as he landed on his back, and he let his hands hit the mud as well, gritting his teeth at the event. He took a deep breath and got up from the muddy ground. He gave Dagrún a piercing look, but did not say anything. She had a point, a point that was all too real in the near future. Shaking his head, he took another deep breath. He adjusted his feet so they were at a shoulders width and dropped into his knees a bit. He twirled the spear around and his dominant hand was at the of it, his left hand now around the middle of it." Any better, Dagrún?"

Once more, Dagrún would walk to the side of Mamoru. It seemed that the Hon was slightly more content with the new stance, only to sudden whack the back of Mamoru's head. Not giving pause to the Senju to recover from the sudden hit or daze, Dagrún would act quickly to shove him of his feet again.
"No. Remember what I said before. Stances won't help you all the time. Though if you are going to just let me constantly hit you, I suppose this is becoming more fun for me."
Once more, the Hon would take a few steps away to let Mamoru recover as she wondered how he would react to the constant berating and beating.
Laying sprawled on his back one more time, Mamoru closed his eyes and took a deep breath. As for now, he was yet to see any real benefit from Dagrún just pummeling him. But then again he knew that snapping on her for training him by her own method. Swallowing hard, he stood up one more time and closed his eyes for a second as he assumed the previous stance and gave Dagrún a determined look."I'm not going to let you hit me anymore." He realized that his proclamation held no real weight to her unless he proves it. Matching her experience will be near impossible for the inexperienced genin.I'm still going to prove it, he told himself, determined to stand behind his words.

"Oh?" The statement of Mamoru seemed to only amuse Dagrún. But in fact, she was more content to finally see that Mamoru wouldn't let her just hit him. While confident that she could make him eat his own teeth, Dagrún felt not obliged to be so sadistic.
Instead, she would grip the staff in a different fashion. Holding with one hand at the near end and the other to balance, she seemed to prioritize range as she started to launch jabs at Mamoru.

Mamoru took another deep breath as Dagrún eyed him, and a few seconds later she changed her stance and a flurry of blows started to fan out towards the young Genin. He ducked under the first one, than as he got up he parried another with an upward swing of his spear. Bringing it down, he deflected another jab as he brought his spear down.He than let it go with his right hand and deflected another strike from Dagrún. Bringing it down, he deflected another jab. He ducked under another strike and grabbed the spear with his right hand and let it go with his left one and thrusted forward his own spear.

Keeping the flurry of attacks going, Dagrún would notice the shift in Mamoru's movement. As he turned to try out a thrust, Dagrún would pivot to step aside. Performing a jab once more, the Hon wouldn't pull her 'spear' back. Instead, in all of a sudden, she would drive more strength and direct it into a sweep to slam the wooden pole against Mamoru.

His eyes tracked Dagrún as she sidestepped his strike, and he realized that he was being too stiff, too static to stand his ground. Instead of ducking again, he decided to use the fact that his hand was still extended. He sidestepped the stab as well and he spun his arms as he spun on his legs, bringing his spear down in a spinning motion aiming at Dagrúns legs.

Whistling softly as Mamoru was still holding his own, Dagrún decided to put it to an end. As the genin decided to spin on his legs and attempt a sweep, the more experienced combatant simply blocked the sweep by firmly planting the polearm down.
"Not too shabby. At ease, for now," Dagrún ordered as she would gesture with her free hand, emphasizing her instruction in case he thought to be smart and continue another attack.

"You can catch your breath before we move on. To a more difficult tool." Dagrún further stated as she seemed once more amused by the prospect of training the genin. "Unless you want to call quits right now, boy."

Mamoru brought down his spear and was about to continue in his movement when he saw and head her instructions to stop. He did so in a split second, bringing his pole back to him and planting it into the muddy ground. He allowed a small smile onto his lips as Dagrún gave to him what was perhaps her version of a compliment. He took a few deep breaths to keep his excitement in reins and looked up at the Hon. He was curious about what a more difficult tool will be and he nodded at her."I can do this all day, Dagrún."

"If we would go at that snail's pace, yeah, then I won't be surprised." The Hon responded on her turn, the amusement still lingering in her voice. "But I recommend you remembering that you're having a busy day ahead. Unless you think of sleeping during your night's patrol. Though I doubt that any cap' will be happy if they catch you." Finding the mere conception of the genin doing something like that funny, Dagrún would rein herself in from laughing or making a joke about it. If she had learned anything from past interactions with Taika. few as they were, they seemed to be most sensitive.

"Next what I will teach you is how to use a shield. Chances are big that we will going to need them. Unless we are send on a nin-operation. Then they might not be so productive," Dagrún explained, "in a pitched fight? You will love them more than warm food as supper." Placing the pole down, she gestured to him to do the same. Turning to the pieces of gear that she had placed into the box, Dagrún would raise out two practice shields. The rather heavy practice objects wouldn't be anything new seeing that they had already been trained and drilling to get accustomed to them.
"Here you go," Dagrún said as she offered him one of the shields. "You probably know the basics of how to use one already. Unless you need the lieutenant to start smacking you a bit more, I won't go over that. Instead, I want to teach you a trick that these oval loveable bastards can provide you."

He listened to everything Dagrún has to say about his snail's pace and once again, decided to let it slip. But she was right about him needing to conserve this strength for the evening's patrol. Getting caught dozing off and not doing some crazy stunt like this on a patrol is a sure way to get into problems. Than he heard Dagrún mentioning shields, he frowned as he pulled out the spear from the ground and rested it on the ground. Seeing as his Father trained him with swords more often, they didn't spend a lot of time on swords. He was trained more in evading rather than blocking the attacks, but despite his reservations he stepped forward and took the shield.

He weighed the shield, than he held it with his left hand while he slid his left hand into the straps, holding them tightly."I think I got the basics down. I was trained how to dodge and avoid attacks, but from what I learned so far … yeah, I am going to love these things. Ready, Dagrún." He replied, hoping he really was.

She had a certain witty remark at the ready when Mamoru proclaimed that he was ready. "Well, alright," she began as she started to tutor him on how to use the oval shields not only in a defensive way but also how great they could be to do a bash.

Time slowly passed as Dagrún continued to test, practice as teach Mamoru some matters on how to handle certain weapons. It primarily remained around showing him the ropes around how to use a straight sword, the oval shields that they would be using with their unit and the advantage of certain other weapons that they would come across.
Though Dagrún wasn't fully content with what she could achieve in a day with the genin, she was happy that he didn't groan and complain like she had actually feared. True, she hadn't seen him do that and hadn't given her any reason to suspect it. But then again, she had hardly ever interacted with the Senju.

"And well, there you go, boy." Dagrún stated, a nod following her words. Placing her hands on her hips, Dagrún continued. "Though I would be eager to see if you indeed can be bashed around all day, I think this should suffice for today's training with me. I prefer not having a certain Cho being mad at me for pummeling a genin, eh? Hehe."

Mamoru nodded and for the next few hours, he really lost track of time. They went through a wide range of weapons. Despite her rough edges, Mamoru had to admit that she knew how to handle a wide range of weapons, and to the young Senju, at an impressive level of skill. Dagrún made him eat his words about not hitting him again several times, and at times he even ate dirt. For some weird reason, each time he hit the muddy ground, it made him less and less agitated and rather more motivated to get up again. At times he grunted for a moment, but he always get up, his focus not wavering for a second. Dagrún was in some way like other drill instructors, but there was something different about her. Despite her resembling a rolling thunder to Mamoru, she was still somehow kinder than them. And he believed her intentions to train him were sincere, though he did not doubt she enjoyed the opportunity to pummel Mamoru at times.

When they were done, Mamoru wiped the mud from his face and looked at Dagrún. He felt slightly exhausted and as he thought about the patrol that awaits him in the evening, he took a deep breath. He will just rely on a good, strong serving of green tea."The pleasure is all mine, Dagrún." He replied, walking closer to her. Despite him being rather tall, he did not feel like that in her presence - he felt as if they were equally tall. But he knew she not only outranked, but also outmatched him."I could totally do that. I'm sure Meilin Sensei would not mind that. Thanks a lot for helping me out, Dagrún!"

A grin spread across Dagrún's lips as he replied back. "Yer welcome, boy. Just make sure to keep most of my lessons in mind and muscle. If the eastern continent is really that much of a trouble region, you might want to go prepared." Once she finished, it seemed that Dagrún considered something.
"Not sure if you're like Aoi. I hardly know much about yous Taika clans." she began, a bit warrier with her words, "but how much do you know of tracking and such? And not just seeing a footstep but actually managing to track down beast and folk alike. 'Cause if yer not that experienced, maybe I can try to pass on some knowledge in that regard. Will serve you rather well in some situations."

Mamoru remained silent as he heard Dagrún talk about the Eastern Continent and nodded, swallowing hard. He kept hearing about it during trainings, and everyone seemed to be very tense when talking about the things they heard. It was making the young Senju make feel rather uneasy and all the more determined to soak up as much training as possible. "I - I will, Dagrún. I heard that much about the East myself. I'll make sure to memorize all of what you said to me today, in mind and muscle. " He replied without his usual enthusiasm and was about to get lost in his thoughts when Dagrún brought up the subject of tracking. Eager to think about something else, he quickly replied.

"I have some very basic experience with tracking, same with the bow and the arrow. My parents taught me a lot in the woods, and when we went for a longer training, we often hunted in the forests. Plus my summon is an expert in tracking, but I don't want to rely solely on that. So, I would like to learn more about tracking, please. "

She was a bit surprised to hear that he had some experience in tracking. Whistling softly, Dagrún cocked her head slightly to the side. "Really now? Didn't know that you have that kind of experience. Very good, I am curious to see what ye Taika folk can do when it comes down to hunting and tracking." Dagrún replied, genuinely wondering if she should have her expectations high or not mind it too much.
"But we will do that later. I rather not have the cap' be pissed at me for making you miss or sleep during your night patrol. Seek me out later and I will see if I can teach ye a trick or two."

He expected many possible answers to his claims, but as awlays, Dagrún managed to surprise him. He raised his eyebrows and raised his right hand at her response, especially at her whistling. He was about to say something back, but he only got to opening his mouth before she mentioned his upcoming night patrol. He dropped his hand with a sigh and looked at her."Guess you're right, huh. Better not sleep on that patrol, or I'll wish it was you pummeling me for the entire day. Looking forward to it, Dagrún! Thanks a lot for today! I - I see you around, I guess!" With that, he gave his fierce teammate a faint smile before turning toward his tent to get some sleep and prepare some pretty strong green tea.[/B]

[ Kirigakure, capital of the Republic of the Water Country ]

7:12 AM, 14th of February.
The southern part of Kirigakure.

One of the districts in the southern part of the large city was blocked off. Early in the morning, a combination of troops had moved in and created a quick, makeshift barricade to quarantine one of the city's district. For the past two weeks, there had already been some concern as people were going sick. Not to mention the strange rumours that surfaced regarding the strange illness. Various, and rather pious, folk started to blame it on the fact that the Divine was upset at them. That they were going to suffer the Divine's wrath for their lack of faith and morality.
While curiosity started to grow there was little doubt that the quarantine wasn't a joke.

The majority of the forces that maintained the quarantine were regular guards and officers of the city's police. But they were supplemented by various teams of ANBU and other masked operatives. To make matters worse, people already started to talk about screams. Screams of agony, pain and anger that ripped through the air and could be faintly heard.
As unrest started to rise through the day, the majority of people decided to stay far away from the quarantine.
Within twelve hours, a part of Kirigakure was locked off from the rest of the world. To suffer a strange and unknown illness in the solitude of those trapped within the quarantine.

3:28 PM, 15th of February.
Throughout the capital of Kirigakure.

Not a day went past or small incidents started to ripple through Kirigakure. With a large part of the city's guard being deployed to set up and maintain the quarantine, there weren't enough guards to keep the peace. Various times were there short-lived confrontations between groups. Though not uncommon for supports of rivalling political factions to get into small brawls, these violent outbursts usually were restrained to the poorer parts of the large capital.
With the absence of many guards, however, it seemed as if the clashes between rival gangs and supports of factions had all the same idea: to head out and try to confront each other.

The unlucky people that were caught in between these brawls would usually leave with minor to no wounds at all. A few less lucky would be hospitalized before the city's guard could respond quickly enough to break up the brawls. Not long before the sky started to darken, unrest would rise to a higher point with many honest folks being rather upset at the sudden troubles.

Various parts of the centrum of Kirigakure.

The city guard would receive reinforcements from various shinobi teams as the garrisoned army force. With the extra help, most trouble could be dealt with. But early in the morning of the 16th of February, an incident occurred. At one of the brawls, a small child seemed to get into the crossfire of a technique launched by a shinobi. The result with the child being mortally wounded and dying on the way to the hospital. Even while many understood that this was a grim accident, the unrest would flare-up.
Many people started to band on the street and actively engaging with the guard and their reinforcements in brawls. As chaos started to run amok, only a very few would notice the withdrawal of the ANBU forces. While some worried about what that could imply, it surely made the rising rioting groups bolder. Several places within the usually bustling centre of Kirigakure would get briefly occupied by rioters.

Only many hours later into the evening were the peacekeeping forces able to bring back a period of peace. Many people got arrested and would be escorted into jail.

Peace seemed to come back to Kirigakure. Even as many were disgruntled and upset at the rather brusque acts of the city guard, there were no new riotings or brawls committed by anybody. The city guard even collaborated with the ANBU to commit swift house invasions, arresting suspects that had a hand in riling the commoners up to riot or work against the cities and Republican forces.

Then the fear started to spark as in within various locations of the city, people started to get ill. Many were brought to the hospital or those with enough coin would quickly hire medical aid. But as night started to descend on the world, fear would hold a firm grip on Kirigakure.

Medicine

[ Republic of the Water Country | Kirigakure]

[ 15th February, 5 AM ]

Standing next to a window, Hakumo had just saw a small group, consisting of four people, that were clearly on their way to cause more havok amidst the chaos that was already beginning to cover Kirigakure. If all it took to bring the city to this situation was such a little push like what had occurred, then surely it meant that the situation was already incredibly tense. He had half a mind to compare it to how tense things were just before the Suzu went and killed each other off. Except this time, things were not contained to just a single clan. Anyone who thought it was right took up arms and headed to the streets to cause some kind of noise.

To take advantage of how little security there was around in the streets currently.

Moving away from the window, he looked at four other individuals that were standing in the room "You all have your targets. Scouting begins now. If any of you are caught in the middle of a fight, expect to be imprisoned later on. The security won't stay like this for much longer." Hakumo told the others, who nodded before heading out the door.

Turning back to the window, Hakumo couldn't help but wonder just how reliable his contractor's sources really would be. If this was some kind of an elaborate plan to get many of them at once, then it would be only scatters they will end up catching. There was no physical evidence, after all. No maps that he drawn on, or notes he'd written down. But if his contact's sources were as reliable as his contractor claimed, then things should go down without a hitch.

[ 18th February, 12 AM ]

"Things are going as you expected they would." Hakumo spoke in a soft tone to a man besides him. He wasn't thinking any ill thoughts of the man, but knowing his background meant he felt caution was still needed. Then there was also the fact he claimed to have a source that helped him ensure the ANBU wouldn't be any kind of issue. If the man really did possess that kind of ally, then Hakumo felt like no matter how much caution he'd use, the guy beside him would be able to just throw him under the bus at any second. Yet at the same time, he knew that even if he would be taken out, at least his family would be safe.

"When is it all starting?" The guy next to him asked.

Hakumo briefly glanced towards him before looking back towards the street "Tonight." he responded, knowing that even though the question came to him, the less details he knew, the better it was. Keeping his contractor's hands clean was a part of the deal, and it was a simple term to follow.

"Good."

After this, Hakumo was left by himself. As time passed he saw a patrol of guards and ANBU passing, escorting some people they suspected helped feed the flames of the recent upset in the city. Yet he was all too aware that was not the end of things. With the illness that still covered the south of Kirigakure, people were still upset. They were only silenced down for the time being.

[ 21st February, 2 AM ]

"Everything we recover is being transported into the agreed upon warehouses. And using the instructed paths along with the appropriate timings has prevented us from encountering any guards or ANBU along the way."

Not turning to look at the man, Hakumo nodded "Then keep going. I'll give the signal when its time." After the instruction was given, Hakumo was once more left on his own. The operation was running successfully so far, and things were looking good, at least on his side of things.

Hakumo didn't know the full scale of his contractor's plan, nor did he have a desire to know. Just like his contractor did not know everything to keep his hands clean. But with what they were getting, and how things had been going so far, Hakumo had a feeling he already knew more than he wanted. It was hard to ignore what they had been stealing, after all.

He had warehouses that were slowly containing more and more medicine. Medicine that the people needed to fight the illness that was slowly going around Kirigakure. And yet, that was what he was hired to do. And he knew that it would help push people further towards the edge. If that was the goal, then he knew they were slowly succeeding. People were beginning to feel the shortages of the needed medicine. And he needed to keep on going until he received the signal.

All because it was part of the plan.

Preparation Planning
[ One of the Third Division camps | Commander's tent of Hiron Hon ]
[ A relative short collab between @Lesli , @conman2163 and @Gerontis | Hiron holds a meeting with various colonels and brigade generals that are present. Explaining the situation in short and what they can expect, Hiron answers a few questions as he makes a few things clear. ]

The maps were placed on the table as various wooden, small miniatures were set on various spots - resembling the intel that Hiron had received and could work with. While he waited for the officers to arrive, the man wasn't simply lounging or taking a break. Already he was planning on how to set up a supply route and what kind of communication would be feasible as most effective. It didn't irk him a lot that they didn't have a whole lot of information on the terrain and sorts. But that there wasn't any decisive piece of information on the local population. Were they hostile? Were they possible enemies to this threat in the east? Questions that could have answers that either disrupted, damaged or entirely threw plans into chaos.

As the requested officers would enter the spacious commander's tent, Hiron nodded to those who came. In truth, some of the officers were new blood. Most of them had seen some conflict and participated in enough training to make them acquainted with how hectic a 'hot-zone' could be. But they lacked true experience.
Currently, it didn't entirely help to improve Hiron's mood that highest ranks within the tent was a single brigade-general and then several colonels of their respective battalion.

"Good, we can begin," Hiron calmly stated as the officers had assembled. There was adequate space for them to surround the table and see what Hiron had set up. "Currently, the allied force is holding up somewhat inland. They have secured a safe spot and are operating from it. General Hyuzu has managed to keep the Republican and Northern allied force with him as they are waiting for us to reinforce them." Hiron continued as he threw a glance now and then at the present officers.

"The intel we got isn't too surprising. The coast is primarily flatlands. The more we move land inwards, the less flat it becomes. There are several rivers, as you can see on the maps. Not to mention a few woods that are present within the region." Hiron paused as he glanced at a few officers. "I want all of it scouted. The first forces that shall be ferried over will be made up out of detachments that will move out at once. Scouts, cavalry, specialists. I want to know what terrain is where. If need be, I want every damn blade of grass counted before the second part of the force is ferried over."

"Once we are getting troops into the country, I want various places under firm control. The 11th brigade will move to this spot."
Hiron pointed towards a spot that seemed closer to the south - towards the Republican vassal, the Honey country. "Their objective, once we have secured the Wolf country, is to hold the passages to the east there." Hiron then threw a glance at the Omari leader.
"The Omari battalion will move forward together with the 12th brigade. I want to widen some of the fronts and make sure that no hostile force can go around and start to cut off our supply route."
Enlisting a pause after the last instruction, Hiron calmly moved his gaze over the present officers.

"Currently, we have gained a good idea of the enemy forces. Their bulk is indisciplined and ill-equipped as barely trained. They are, however, with many more than us. Unless we get the local population to work with us, we are facing an ocean of hostiles that are ready to swoop down on us. Added to that are their 'core' forces." Hiron paused as he would gesture to one of the miniatures that resembled Hayate's forces in the east.
"We have received intel that they have their own shinobi corp and a professional force. One that isn't on par with our elite force. But a good match for any regular soldier. For now, I don't have an answer on how we will deal directly with them. All units have their own shinobi operatives among the ranks. So once we got our positions and know what we are dealing with exactly, I will formulate an approach. Any questions?"

Chu carefully considered the map and the pieces placed on it. His battalion was not originally supposed to be brought along with the reinforcements, but he was glad to see that Hiron had already made plans for them. Still, with the sea of hostiles that were facing them, Chu had a few questions, particularly since casualties would have to be kept to a minimum. "Do we have any word on the composition of their units? Furthermore, what sort of supply situation will we be facing over there?"

Aiko listened to Hiron. If anything, she felt far from comfortable on what she had heard from the Eastern Continent. Then again, the threat of a possible conflict that could grow out of hand and drag them into another Great War? That was even less appealing to her.
The plan that Hiron laid out wasn't that surprising or complex. It was necessary and she liked that it didn't contain any sense of any unnecessities that could overcomplicate things for them or their goals.
The first to speak up was the Omari leader, who posed two questions. Waiting for a second, Aiko decided to chime in a question of her own.
"How likely is that the Republic will send more troops?" She asked, already figuring that the Lightning was too occupied with their civil strife to contribute more to the threat in the east.

The first two questions came from Chu Omari. Hiron ignored some of the looks that the senior officers shot subtly, while some certainly didn't, towards the Omari leader. "Not more than what I told you. The majority are far from disciplined or properly trained men. Using a wide variety of weapons and tools. Spears, axes, maces and whatever you can think is easy to forge and use. " Letting a second of silence echo his first answer, Hiron continued calmly.
"We will face a decent situation, unlike what General Hyuzu had to deal with. A supply route will be set up and also be further contributed by the Republicans. Though I rather only make use of their 'charity', if we are really forced to it. Else? We will forage and keep using what own supplies come through our own logistics."

Turning his attention to Aiko, she had asked a question that had played around in his mind as well. "Honestly, I hope they will. We contribute most troops but it will prove rather bad for the Republic if they will solely rely on us. I doubt that her Majesty will consider it fair. Unless the Republic desires to provoke her Majesty and us to take rewards on our own to compensate our efforts, then they better send troops."
Once more Hiron shot a look at the present officers.
"I will further state that while our enemy isn't on our level of discipline or quality, I will not tolerate any action that disrupts the campaign. If you desire to make a name for yourself with making unwanted sacrifices or whatever causes this host to lose valuable men, then you better make peace with your Gods. And hope they have both mercy and pity for you. Cause I will have none."

Chu ignored the looks coming through by the senior officers in the tent. He didn't exactly care what they thought, and he had less of an opinion of his peers. As far as he was concerned they weren't valuable opinions if they were personal and they were of him. He had two main priorities in this campaign, keep himself and his clansmen alive, and efficiently execute his job so that they might return home expediently. Any glory they might get coated in along the way was a bonus. So with his two main questions established and answered, Chu withdrew to his thoughts once more, considering the information given. If they weren't cut off they'd be well enough supplied, otherwise the Empire wouldn't be sending this many reinforcements. He crossed his arms but did not say anything in response to Hiron. The man likely knew that he was taking along his own clansmen in his battalion, and the Omari would not needlessly sacrifice their lives for the sake of glory. Though it was a bonus that Chu knew and understood the cost that it would take to replace the equipment and weapons of every man that perished in his battalion.

Aiko remained silent. The answer to her question was enough to make her content. There were a lot more questions but she decided not to bring them up. For she understood that various factors and matters were likely still unknown to them. With mixed emotions, she would throw a glance at the map before back at Hiron. Remembering who were on the eastern continent, Aiko made the silent vow once more that she would make sure that those boys would get back. Alive and in once piece, if she could help it.

The Unit is ready!
[ Empire of Akino | Cho Clan heartlands, some distance north of the port-city of Aegir, at a fortified camp ]
[ Third Imperial Division | The Axebiters - part of the Hell's Raiders | Eòin's Company ]

[ Wroten with a bit of @Lesli chiming in at the near end | Mentionings of the following characters:

For several weeks now had the unit been in training. It had been far from easy but the platoon would endure. From sunrise to the afternoon did they train. At evening and night, they were either able to regain energy for the next day of drills and training. Or they were assigned to duties that were expected of their rank. From doing patrol rounds, standing guard to the likes of digging latrines.
The platoon existed out of twenty-five people. They were separated into squads of five, each lead by a sergeant while the platoon itself was supposed to be under the leadership of a lieutenant.

And while they were all treated equally rough by the drilling sergeants and lieutenants of the brigade, they weren't all from the same origin. Seeing that she was to be the acting lieutenant once the platoon would be deployed with the rest of the brigade, Meilin took it on herself to learn the names of the group. And it soon became clear that they were one of the less experienced elements of the brigade.
There were various volunteers, hailing from different parts of the Empire. There were a couple of men that hailed from Keishi, while others came from the Hon, Sarutobi or Cho clan. A few also came from the Natsui Dominion or the Yakimara. Thus forming quite the melting pot.
There wasn't much interaction, at first, outside of training. They only came together to train and work together underneath the supervision of their trainers and drill sergeants. Or when being assigned to perform duties in and around the camp.
Outside of those times? They didn't seem to entirely trust each other well enough. The Taika minority of the platoon stayed together while the Chonobi stuck with each other. The two Yakimara volunteers that served in the platoon? Meilin found it quite funny that the two men had an easy time to win the trust of both camps.

With various attempts, Meilin would try to create a more cohesive unit. During drills, she would show compassion and care for all in the unit. And outside, she would regularly engage to make the group come together. Usually at her expense, as she would have to often smuggle and snatch alcohol or other goods to share with her platoon.
The first few attempts ended in failure. The distrust between the various groups was too large and it hampered their performance during the unit drills and training. And each failure during those drills was always punished with more exercises and training. Or to curb in the free time that the platoon had if the drill sergeants and lieutenants felt like it.

This together with the training underneath the guidance of Chief Medical Officer, Corin Mei, Meilin certainly had her hands full. This only became more intense as she would receive training from Tsuchida Iwane, a captain underneath the banner of the Axebitters. Meilin did like the cheerful man. The optimism often causing her to want to do better as he would help her understand what her role would be as a lieutenant. Though he also engaged in training a few other lieutenants, Meilin would often be the one to ask most questions. Luckily for her, the patience of Tsuchida was as big as his grin.
Eventually, it became Meilin's task to guide and coordinate training for the platoon with the aid of captain Tscuhida. He was always rather quick to point out to Meilin what she did wrong. What could go better and how to lead by example rather than through force or persuasion.

And so, days became once more weeks.

The unit was more cohesive and able to endure a lot together. And talks were surfacing that the preparations to ferry them to the eastern continent were almost done. Somehow, the whole excitement and tension around the idea of being deployed to an unknown continent caused more cohesion. Even with some current differences in culture, clans and religion, the unit seemed more than ever ready to face the challenges that awaited them.

And as the last test, Meilin was to lead her unit through the final courses of training. Being briefed by captain Tsuchida on what awaited her, she was to prepare her unit as good as she could for the upcoming challenges. The first was an obstacle course where the platoon was to compete with another platoon from another brigade - in who could be faster in completing the course. All in full gear together with a rucksack with provisions and some necessary tools.
First came the hurdle of the platoon needing to sprint as fast as they could over a field of fifty meters. Soon after the second hurdle would come into play. The platoon would need to crawl and drag themselves through mud and what seemed to be blood and organs. All while a network of sharp wire was laid low.
The third hurdle was requiring the platoon to once more sprint fifty meters and proceed to vault over various obstacles. From wooden fences that came to the height of an average person's hips. To the end obstacle of the third hurdle: a tall wooden wall that had to be climbed.
The fourth hurdle required the platoon to form up in formation and use their training shields to protect themselves against the drill sergeants and lieutenants - who would throw rotten fruit, vegetables and other wares at them.
The fifth hurdle would be the other platoon that would form up on the other side. Then it came down to which platoon was able to 'defeat' the other. Though there were several rules involved, it would be far from nice and gentle play between the two competing platoons.

The platoon would ready up behind the line. All of them were determined and ready to get going. When the signal was given, the group sprinted forwards. The first to be at the head was Aoi and Dagrún, both who Meilin asked to take the lead as she would linger back. Shouting at those who were not sprinting as fast, Meilin would attempt to motivate them to move faster.
By the time that Meilin had reached the second hurdle, she would get down and start to crawl. The sharp wire certainly didn't invite anybody to stick their head up, literally forcing them to slide themselves across the mud. Luckily, it wasn't anything new for the platoon.
The worst and surprise part of the second hurdle was when they reached halfway. Pig blood and organs, likely courtesy from the medical course, were thrown over them by drills sergeants, causing some of the platoon to hesitate and waver.
The first to move in was Aoi, quickly followed by Dagrún Hon. More quickly followed as nobody wanted to linger behind and cause the platoon to lose in the competition.

The platoon then waited as Meilin ordered them to move on the third obstacle together. This allowed a small window of reprieve on the likes of Aoi and Dagrún. And let the last ones to catch up. Once they all were assembled, Meilin would lead the unit. Despite the heavy equipment, she felt at home. Vaulting and moving rapidly over the course, she would often wait and motivate her unit to keep pushing onwards.
The platoon then reached the tall wooden wall. Whistling to get the attention of the unit, Meilin braced herself for what was to come.
Standing in front of the wooden wall, Meilin placed her hands against the wood. Instruct another to climb on her and do the same, she wanted the unit to form a human ladder.
The platoon did as their lieutenant asked but it was met with some hesitation until Madoc spurred some of the men to follow the order. Painfully and slow, the ladder would be formed. Allowing Madoc to climb to the top and allowing to drop the few ropes that would allow the others to scale the wooden wall and descend from it again.

The platoon was pretty winded due to the previous hurdles but they were instructed to keep up the pace. Moving in front, Meilin would raise a fist and shout the required instruction. Falling in line, the platoon formed a protective formation. Using their heavy shields, the unit would slowly march forwards as impacts could be felt as objects were thrown by them.
Halfway across the necessary distance, Meilin whistled hard. Madoc would take his place out of the unit to throw an apple back at one of the drill sergeants to surprise the lot, before moving back into the protective formation. While it certainly brought the wrath of the drill sergeants, it improved morale.
Reaching the end of the fourth hurdle, the platoon would have a small window to catch their breath before Meilin gave new instructions.

The fifth hurdle was the competing platoon. Both platoons would quickly form up a strong line. The opposing unit soon enough let out shouts and hurled insults at Meilin's platoon. Underneath Meilin's strict orders, her platoon would stay silent as they slowly advanced in a steady line of shields, backed by their muscle and steel will.
The collision came around halfway the small field. The opposing platoon attempted to push with their shields and else use the blunt, heavy practice weapons to dissuade Meilin's unit from achieving their victory, in order to gain their own.
Grunting, Meilin lingered a bit behind her platoon's formation. Passing instructions and several times moving into the thick to prevent a gap being created, her platoon started to win terrain. Slowly but surely, they started to push the opposing unit back to their starting position.
Exhausted from the previous hurdles and sore from the various spots where she had been hit, Meilin kept shouting at her platoon. As one, they started to push while letting out a cohesive shout.
Until they managed to win and achieve victory over the other platoon.

She could barely stand but felt immensely proud of the unit. They were standing in full formation, their practice weapons 'sheathed' while they held their shields in front of them - on the ground with their hands on top of the shield's rim. Standing five by five, Meilin was position in front while the sergeants of the unit were standing behind her, as first-line.
For a good ten minutes, they were all still standing. No complaint left their lips as the colonel inspected the unit. Finally, the colonel gave his blessing to the platoon. Causing a certain 'silent' celebration to pass among the members who couldn't resist to pat each other on the shoulder or share a grin when they were relieved.

Just before Meilin could take her leave with the unit, the colonel approached her. Causing her to stand at the ready and salute the higher officer. Lowering her arms and keeping her back straight, she awaited to what the colonel would want to tell her.

"You did a mighty fine job today," the colonel said calmly, gesturing to the leaving members of Meilin's platoon. "I am impressed with your performance of leadership. It seems that captain Tscuhida has a high opinion of you as well."

The words almost caused Meilin to smile. She was exhausted but happy to hear that captain Tscuhida was happy with her performances. If anything, she wanted to ask for her leave. But that was improper due to her being of lower rank.
"Thank you, Colonel, sir!" Meilin replied, managing to keep her expression neutral.

"It does me good to see potential folk taking leader positions," colonel Eòin calmly continued as he moved his gaze back at Meilin, "but I only want the best of the best. If you want the position of this platoon as a lieutenant, then you won't mind to prove me your determination. Right?" The colonel asked, a polite smile crossing his lips.

Meilin felt her heart sinking. She indeed wanted to prove her determination. But she was exhausted and felt her limbs aching from the hurdles that they had to cross. Steeling herself, Meilin replied resolutely.
"I am ready to prove myself, Colonel, sir."

The colonel nodded slowly as he would turn half around. Raising an arm, he would point to a certain point. "Then you won't mind doing a ruck run. You are likely familiar with it already. Perform one and if you are able to report back here within the usual time. Then I will allow you to take the position as lieutenant."

Following the man's finger, Meilin wished anything but a ruck run. By the mere mentioning, her legs started to ache more than they already had. But she understood that she had two options. Either to cave in or to break. Seeing she had asked consistently the best of the platoon during the previous combined obstacle course, Meilin would respond back to the colonel.
"Yes, Colonel, sir."

Her shuffled her forward. The pain from exhaustion was becoming more intense than it had been before. Even breathing costed precious energy. Tears were already rolling over her cheeks and falling to the ground as Meilin pressured herself to keep moving on. The ruck run was no joke when one had to perform it before a day of exercises and exhausting drills. The full equipment of her gear and rucksack wore heavily on her. And for a moment she regretted everything. Most of all to position herself at the bottom of the human ladder at the wooden wall. Her shoulders were becoming numb and Meilin wasn't sure if she was going to last longer.

But she then picked up some sounds. Her feet weren't the only ones that shuffled. Her breath wasn't the only one that raspy and hinted towards exhaustion.
Meilin threw a look to the side and much to her surprise saw Aoi and Madoc at her right. They were in full gear as well, keeping up with Meilin. To her left were Dagrún and Mamoru. Feeling the tears at her eyes, Meilin bite her upper lip for a second.

At the end of the day, it became official. Meilin would become the official lieutenant of the platoon. With Aoi, Dagrún and Madoc as her sergeants.

A sighting on...
[ Empire of Akino | Cho Clan heartlands, some distance north of the port-city of Aegir, at a fortified camp ]
[ Aiko Cho-Hon | Brigade General of the 11th | Leader of Team 8 | Cho clan leader ]

The travel back to the camp that her own brigade was using was short. Reaching the camp, Aiko wasted no time. Orders were given to most colonels to relay information to their officers and do what they could. For while they had little time, perhaps it could serve as preparation for awaited them east. Or what they know so far about the situation east.
A meeting was further arranged with one of the battalion's senior captains to meet her. But not at her commanding tent as she had something on her mind.
Reaching the place, she had a good overview of the camp. For the purpose that she had in mind, Aiko had taken one of the optics that they had for use. The small devices were far from cheap and couldn't see as far as Aiko liked them to. But it was good enough for her current desire.
While Aiko used the optic to search for what had been on her mind, somebody joined her. He climbed the watchtower and would announce himself.

"Lady Cho, ma'am," the captain saluted towards Aiko as he flashed a polite smile, "Yours to command." The captain placed his hands at his back while he waited to see why his superior had summoned him.

Lowering the optic, Aiko turned to salute the captain back. "Colonel Eòin," Aiko began, "I am glad that you could join me on such short notice. I would like to hear what advances your unit has made since the last time that we spoke." Aiko requested as she would raise the optic to resume her 'watch' on her target.

Eòin nodded slowly as he began to formulate and weigh the words in his mind. "I am content, so far. With my battalion having the most influx of new recruits, I can report that they will be ready for a prolonged campaign. Most of them are volunteers and despite various differences, the majority is adapting and acclimating." The colonel paused for a second. "We did have a few fallouts. But they have been replaced and all is in good order, ma'am."

Aiko listened to the colonel's words. Taking them in, she once more lowered the optic and threw a look at the colonel. "Good. Cause we are going to be ferried over in a short time. So I will need your battalion to be ready. Yours will be one of the first to move into the zone." Aiko told him as she subtly gestured him to come closer. "I believe you got word of who I want to put into the Gwade Rangers?"

Eòin's facial expression didn't change when he heard that his unit was going to be sent in first. The calm, older man would take a few steps forward and throw a glance at the direction of the camp - slightly curious what his superior was looking for. "The Aldermarsh boy? I gave word out to the Gwade captain. He is to start tomorrow. As a ranker, I believe. Though I have to be honest with you, ma'am," the colonel began on a cautious tone, "what makes you think that the boy will fit in? The unit you put him up for isn't exactly the most suitable for the inexperienced."

Aiko frowned slightly as she caught sight of what she had been looking for. Lowering her optic again, she half turned to the colonel. "I am well aware, colonel. And thanks for being straight with me. I can understand the concern but I trained the boy myself. He sure isn't the prodigy that can ace everything. But he is a loyal brat and competent." Offering the optic, she would point out a direction. "Not to mention, he is currently spending his free time with your favourite subject, ain't he?"

The colonel's concerns weren't taking away. But he wouldn't voice them to Aiko. Instead, he took the optic that she offered and would direct it to where she pointed. It took him a few seconds but he then caught sight.
The corner of Eòin's lips lowered as he kept looking through the optic. "Well, I will let the captain of the rangers know that he best whip that boy into shape."

Slightly amused, Aiko responded. "Keep me updated. Though, now that we have discovered this little coupling. What is the update on this new favourite lieutenant of yours, colonel?" Aiko asked, well aware that she had been the one to direct both Eòin and Corin Mei to look into the prospect of picking out this Meilin Cho. The girl had an interesting history and potential, due to what Aiko had managed to dig up - which was easier due to the access Aiko had with the Cho Guards.

Eòin shot another look with the optic. Spotting Meilin and Kazumo still sitting together. "She is a hardy lass, ma'am. I have had some talks with Doctor Mei myself about her progress. She has potential. Far from being the most talented but I value a hard worker more than a talented one." He paused for a mere second as he offered the optic back. "I allowed her to be appointed to become the lieutenant of a platoon."

"That is good news. That would be all, colonel." Aiko said, subtly dismissing the man from her presence. Following suit, the colonel would salute firmly once more before taking his leave. Turning back to the direction of the camp, Aiko leaned on the railing. Once more she would raise the optic and watch Kazumo and Meilin. Naturally, she had no clue what the two were talking about. But so far she could see, Kazumo was behaving differently. Much different than how he had been within the presence of other girls his age.
"Gods damn, Kazumo," Aiko softly cursed as she worried now. She was expecting the envoy from the Edani soon. If Kazumo was now falling for some lieutenant that she had considered promising and interesting, that would sow some troubles.
Then again, it could also mean the end of his own risky ambitions as he had to pick between a potential interest or sacrificing his own interest for his ambitions.

[ Third Imperial Division | The Axebiters - part of the Hell's Raiders | Eòin's Company ]

[ Wroten by @Oblivion666 and @Oetje | Kazumo tries to enjoy his day free. As he goes through camp, he stumbles upon a familiar face. Meeting with Meilin, he is rather happy to sit down and talk with the latter. The two engage into a lengthy engagement.

As Aiko said he would have the day off to get more settled in however, he took the opportunity to explore around the camp though. After all, it made sense to get better acquainted with the area one would be working in. Only issue was everyone always seemed in a rush, he was constantly moving out of the way of people who darted around others who were also in a rush. He could see how the military life for a soldier was quite difficult. Deciding to venture off into the more relaxed part of the camp, Kazumo guessed that he was in one part of the camp where others put up their tents for their "area".

His was a little ways from here but he was sure more areas where people go to sleep were scattered among the area. Yet stumbling along he saw a familiar face drawing in front of a tent. It was Meilin Cho, which upon seeing her brought a small smile to his face. She was drawing away using from what he could tell the supplies he had given her. Approaching her he would speak up so he didn't surprise her.
"Glad to see you using those art supplies." he started saying before stopping and sitting down on the ground.
"You got the day off as well from training? Or did they already make you run the rounds?"

Focused on her drawing, Meilin didn't notice that Kazumo was approaching her. Fixated on a group of soldiers up ahead, she kept shifting her gaze between them and the sheet of paper that seemed to be placed on something like a small plank. Using a piece of charcoal, Meilin very carefully as gently made motions over the sheet. Her movements betrayed a certain impression of anxiety as excitement.

"Huh?" Surprised, Meilin twisted her head to look at Kazumo who sat down.
"Oh, you are still alive." Meilin said, her tone friendly despite the sarcastic phrasing, "And I was given a day of rest. How about you?"
Briefly, Meilin glanced at her work but she would subtly lean forward to cover up the work as much as possible.
"You aren't going to tell me that you just sneaked out of training and getting yelled to see how I was doing, right?"

She seemed rather focused on what she was drawing, yet still had it in her to throw some teases his way. Although like true artists did, she made sure to cover her work from his eyes. One of his friends did that, Kouta Riojin would bever let him look at his work when he was neighbours with the guy. Then came her comment which caused him to chuckle, not quite what he expected but it was an improvement from being slapped.

"Well you caught me, I expect the instructor to come racing over here any minute now. Should have heard him yell when he found out I was missing." He joked along with her statement, "But no, I was given the day off. I expect my coming day to be packed full with training. Although I don't mind the day off, been quite the hetic couple of months . You probably understand that feeling though."

A faint smile crossed her lips as she actually wasn't sure if she should believe that he had sneaked off. When he corrected and gave her the real reason why an officer wasn't in search of him or cursing his name, Meilin lowered her eyes and nodded a few times.
"Ah, yeah, I can understand." She replied on her turn.

"So, what unit are you in?" Meilin decided to ask, curious about it. "I assume that you here in the 11th Brigade for a reason, right?"

He would nod along to her question, [color=purple"Yes I am, the Gwade Rangers to be more specific. So I'm quite excited to see how professionals such as themselves go about their duties. See if I can learn any new tricks from them. What about yourself? Anything special you got in the 11th Brigade?"[/color] Kazumo asked as he knew she had some skill so she might not be a simple rank

"The Gwade Rangers," Meilin repeated after him.
If anything, she was somewhat surprised and impressed. Though while not very familiar with the unit in person, she was well aware of what had been said and told. If anything, it certainly was higher valued than a regular combat unit.
"At the moment? Sergeant. I serve in the Axebiters, under the command of captain Eòin. I am being trained to become a lieutenant but it is yet to see if my training will be done when we going to make the crossing." Meilin responded on her turn, "I also get specialist training with the medics. Likely due to my small knowledge of medical ninjutsu and being able to apply it."

Becoming silent for a moment, Meilin decided to bring up another question.
"Maybe when you are more accustomed with the rangers, you teach me how to shoot a bow? In return," she pondered for a moment, "maybe I can make a middling swordsman out of you." The half-hearted joke was followed by a wink.

A sergeant and being trained to become a lieutenant? Well that was already really impressive, he was starting off on square one and she was already on her way to a lieutenant position. It also only helps her that she is getting specialist training as well. If he didn't already know he would have assumed she came from a military family, yet this was simply how well she proved herself. Yet despite the fact they were around the same age and both were almost equally skilled, he felt oddly really happy for her.

Her next comments caused him to smirk, she made it seem like he didn't know how to shoot one, and while in jest he wasn't going to pass up on some practice for his sword. "You do know I can show you how to shoot at anytime right? You just have to name a time and we can easily get started on that…. And maybe you can indeed." Kazumo stated. As he remained silent and looked at the paper she was still covering up, he for some reason felt… bad? He wasn't quite sure but he felt like he was lying to Meilin and he wasn't quite sure why but it was making his stomach twist and turn.

"Sorry I couldn't find time while in Ardara to go explore the city with you. I wanted to but by the time I got back from seeing the oracle. Well I was already being sent off to here." Kazumo said not sure if she remembered anything about it or not, yet he did and was looking forward to it. Yet there just wasn't enough time, it seemed like there never was enough time.

Growing slightly amused at the fact that he actually took serious, Meilin considered the proposal. It wasn't like it would not benefit her. Even if she had some doubts if archery would fit her, it only seemed an advantage.
""Okay, sure thing. If you can teach me some archery then I will see if I can teach you how to swing a sword. Properly, that is." Meilin did briefly consider a time. She was rarely ever free and usually when she wasn't assigned anything, she had to prepare for the next hurdle.
Before she could name a time, Kazumo brought up Ardara. And then that he had to visit an oracle.
""Oh? You know, you can just say that you were busy." Meilin joked back as she wasn't sure if he went to see an oracle. ""Unless this oracle told you to apologize, then who am I to speak against such wisdom? But it is fine. I am occupied these days anyways by a genin of mine."

It didn't quite seem as if she was taking him seriously, it did sound like a typical excuse for why one couldn't do something that was planned. "I mean I was busy but the oracle part was true, although she didn't tell me to apologize…" he started trailing off when he started figuring out why it felt like he had a hole in his stomach. He was lying about who he was, yet he's lied before it part of the job to keep secrets from people sometimes. Yet this one was bothering him. A lot more than he thought it would. Yet he knew Aiko wanted him to keep it a secret for good reasons, however, he just couldn't with her.

"I found out my ancestor isn't Sigberth but Astride. So when I introduced myself to you, I was incorrect." Kazumo stated as he kept his eyes more towards the ground, he wasn't quite sure how she would react to such a thing. Not a lie that affects her but it was still a lie.

""Oh?" Meilin frowned lightly as she started to become less skeptical if he was telling the truth. Then again, how many people visited an oracle? Also, what oracle? Keeping her thoughts for herself, Meilin listened to what Kazumo had to say.
It remained silent for some seconds as Kazumo stated what the oracle had said. While Meilin didn't understand why he seemed upset about it, as everybody could make a mistake, it slowly dawned on her.

"Well, that is a revelation." Meilin muttered, audible enough for Kazumo. ""Not that you were incorrect. I mean, back then you didn't know either? I am not that petty to be angry about that." She managed to say, her voice friendly, ""But huh, that means you're not related to the Empress?" She decided to ask, her tone a bit softer as she weighed some options carefully.

She wasn't wrong he didn't know indeed, yet it's how he was raised and told by his father. Did his dad not know? Did he lie to hope that his son would become big in the world off that? Yet he nodded when she asked if that meant he wasn't related to the Empress. "Astride and Sigeberth's blood both trace back to their father Theodulf. So we might be slightly related at most, yet for the most part we are not…." He remained silent before realizing he was missing something. "Oh how silly of me, all I said was I meet an Oracle. I meet with the Voice of Bergjlot who had numerous things to tell me. Some that show promise and some that concern me as well."

Meilin grew once more silent. Not because she wasn't interested. Her curiosity was quite piqued at the moment. But the fact was that she wasn't sure how to respond to it. She had heard tales of the oracles, certainly the Voice of Bergjlot. But did the stories really align with reality? Then was the question if he wasn't just trying to pull a prank on her or trying to impress her.
Judging on their previous interactions, the later was not that likely. She had seen such behaviour before in Keishi but telling you had visited an oracle didn't really match the usual macho-behaviour.

"So, okay. That is quite interesting. How did that visit go? Did she tell you that you are going to lose a limb or two? Going to have fifteen children or something like that?" Meilin asked, the jests being a mere attempt to coerce him to tell her more.

He chuckled but shook his head. "No she answered questions that you ask and then you pay a price. This is the common knowledge part, what happens when she answers is well…. Less common knowledge." Kazumo said as he looked at her and chuckled. "You know its kind of adorable how you use jokes to try and know more about the situation. I was already planning on telling you. Cause I did want your opinion as you are a smart woman that might have better luck at guessing a riddle." Kazumo said with a smile
"Keep the wolf close and find the snake, shed the blood of the lamb, and keep the raven close."

She wanted to say something witty but decided to just take the words as a compliment. Chances were slim that anybody would compliment her these days. Aside from Mamoru, she figured. When Kazumo stated the riddle, the frown returned on Meilin's brow.
Crossing her arms out in front of her chest, she glanced up as she tried to understand the riddle.

"Sounds like some really vague and odd recipe. You know, some lamb and potatoes just go well enough. Try to add some vegetables and you can't go wrong with it." Meilin decided to joke, a smirk spreading on her lips as she found her own comment funny enough. Coughing softly, she did decide to turn a bit more serious.
"But honestly? I am bad at riddles. I always disliked them. But perhaps it is some symbolism? Or you need to first find the meaning of each… animal? All I know about oracles is that they tend to be confusing. And usually either very right or the person just understands their words completely wrong." She added, as a more serious response.

If only it could be as simple as literally shedding the blood of a lamb for a recipe, yet he somehow doubted it would be that simple. It did cause him a small smile, then when she said maybe understanding the meaning of each animal his eyes widened a bit. "I never thought about it like that… Yet then makes it a bit more confusing, whose definition am I going off of for the animals meanings?" Everyone had different viewpoints on the animals, which only made it a bit more complex but also more worrying on some of them. "You dislike riddles though? You seem to have a good understanding of them. Yet I see how oracles can be confusing. Im suppose to restore an old temple but wasn't told which one just that I would know."

She wouldn't mind helping him. But she simply didn't know the answer to the question. For all she could suggest, it could very well be the wrong direction that would lead to dreadful results. A wrinkle appeared on her nose bridge as she tried to ponder on it.
"Perhaps you might later find some expert on oracles and their answers. I doubt that there aren't some people around that love to dissect such riddles and what not." She decided to suggest.
"And no, I don't like them. I prefer things to be just straightforward told. No dancing around the bush or making it all vague on purpose. But come, tell me more about the Voice of Bergjlot."

Flashing a smile, she would continue. "Was it an old hag? Or a beautiful witch kind of like woman? Or was it some grumpy hermit that told you to get away from him?"

He could find experts on riddles but defeated the purpose of figuring it out himself. He didn't want the answer but simply a step in the right direction. Yet riddles weren't for everyone, he enjoyed them but he could see the annoyance when it was for something important. Still though even though she disliked them, she was good at thinking about hidden meanings. He would have to ponder more about that later, meanings for each of the animals might be a good step forward.
Now though she was curious about the oracle herself asking if it was a hag or a beautiful witch or a mean hermit. All of which he shook his head at. "It was a young female child. Least I believe she was a child, she was the height of one and was certainly youthful enough to be one. Yet she acted way more mature than most adults. Yet she still had a bit of a childish nature about her."

Hearing the answer, Meilin certainly felt a bit disappointed. She had expected something more befitting an oracle. A kid? How was that befitting for somebody that was the voice of a goddess? When he explained more, it did make a bit more sense. If only that she was aware that Bergjlot was one of the trickiest deities to understand.
"Wauw, not what I expected." Meilin once more mumbled, before she spoke up again. This time her curiosity piqued by another factor that she hadn't weighed in yet.
"And what did you ask? Must have asked something odd to get such a weird response. Was it about hunting down some large animals or sort?"

Shaking his head he didn't have an interest in hunting a large animal, he could just do that if he really wanted too. Heck he might be hunting game sometimes for camp provisions.
"Oddly enough I asked a question which even if I was told I'd fail, I would still attempt to complete. I asked about the unification of the Sarutobi. Too see if I would achieve it or if I would fail. I was told if I continue on my path that I would succeed at achieving it. Yet I was also told that the future is also ever changing and my success now may not be a success later on."

Staring at Kazumo, Meilin realised the gravity of what he just told her. Blinking a few times, she was not entirely sure why he was so open with her about it. If it were her, she would have kept such ambitions close to heart. Even the likes of Aoi wouldn't hear it, if she had been in his shoes.
"Huh," she frowned once more, for a brief moment. Shaking her head lightly, she couldn't understand a few things.
"So you want to unite the Sarutobi, went to the Voice of Bergjlot and are now stuck with a riddle. All the while knowing that the outcome can change as the future is never… the same. Wauw, talking about making it yourself difficult, huh?"

For a moment, she actually pitied him. Why did he decide it would be a good idea to go through all that trouble? Then again, she had no idea what kind of influence one could field if people believed you were actually in a way related to the Empress. That surely yielded some sway.
"Worse is that you think that I can help you. If anything, I am a nobody. Best advice I can give you is to just do… things? I guess? I don't know. I never really tried to mingle with the noble ladies or lords."

He could have sworn he told her about his goal before, least he believed he did as her reaction says otherwise. Well if he didnt before he did now, nodding to what she said as he rubbed his head before she said that the worst was that he thought a nobody like her could help him. This caused a small frown to appear on his face. "Yet you are a nobody who leads their own team, is a sergeant and is training to become a lieutenant. I think you don't understand the definition of what nobody is. You don't have to be of royal blood or famous, rich, naturally skilled to be considered a somebody. Everyone was nobody at one point." Kazumo lectured unsure of why that had angered him, it wasn't even directed at him.

"Besides I was more wanting your opinion, I still plan on achieving what I wish by my own two hands. You did after all give a good point on the meanings of the animals. I never would have thought about that."

The first that Meilin wanted to reply with was that such a feat wasn't a big one, at all. There were literally many like her. But instead of giving a most fitting reply in return, she briefly just looked at him. Blinking twice, she seemed more focused on giving her opinion.
"If you want my full opinion, sure." She said, briefly glanced away at the scenery in front of them.
"I think it is a nice goal. Not the easiest, so might be best to try to gather allies and that kind of stuff. Maybe even striking some deals and getting people to be cordial towards you and your ambition. There will be likely people that are going to oppose you. Shifts in power or change in general is rarely ever accepted by all. So maybe try to comfort those who are wary of upstarts that you are not going to threaten their lives and what not."

Making a gesture to the camp, that literally was all around them, Meilin continued.
"It is much like how the military works, I guess. You need to establish trust while you work your way up to prevent that all kinds of people start to think you're a threat. Then again, you are something with the Empress? Should work well in your favour, despite you wanting to achieve this all with your own two hands." A smile cracked on her lips. "Sometimes, many hands make light work."

►Interactions: Yukimi Yuki

The girl was starting to grow frustrated with the shuriken practice as it grew towards the end, noticing how she wasn't particularly scoring that much better than either of the genin. There should have been a larger gap in their skill, Yukimi knew. But her attitude and reliance on her kekkei genkai over the years slowed the skill gain on her part. Something she wouldn't have really been capable of even admitting to until not that long ago. Her irritation and not-so-positive thoughts would be rather clearly shown to others on her team. As the shuriken she threw had little hints of frost on them which had not previously been there. Then they were told to stop just as Yukimi let loose her last weapon, which struck the target just outside of the bullseye and was her closest hit to perfect from the entire practice. Turning quickly around towards Nishi, a slow breath could be heard leaving the girl as she reigned her mood back in despite being rather annoyed with herself. Having any sign of that irritation showing would simply have no benefit and, if she gauged her sensei correctly, likely come as a hindrance to her. By the time the next exercise was explained, the girl had managed to bring back a typical, neutral expression.

Looking towards each of the genin as they seemed to want to speak up first, Yukimi listened closely to their answers. Knowing what they felt was their weakness would be useful, and depending on how their team leader felt about the training might even come directly relevant soon enough. Of course, she had her own opinions about what each of their weaknesses might be. At least, as far as Claire went. She did not know very much about the new girl, unfortunately, and thus was not in much of a position to really judge her weaknesses. The new girl chose what Yukimi felt to be a basic and... canned response if she had to be honest. Lack of experience? Obviously. For somebody fresh from the academy, there was no experience to be had. It certainly didn't reveal anything about herself or what she really thought if one asked her opinion. Though there was no hint of her inner thoughts on her expression, or even in her eyes as she kept a neutral gaze upon her. Then came Claire's turn, who first started with the lack of experience before addressing her lack of emotional control. That one, Yukimi very much agreed with. Oddly enough, it was also something she felt she just might be able to help her fellow genin with getting a bit of a handle on. Though of course she did not particularly speak up, and simply waited until Claire was finished with speaking.

"I would have to I have two weaknesses, which play hand-in-hand with each other." Yukimi began as she paused for a moment to gather her thoughts. "The first being my... attitude with which I carry myself, and the second being my reliance on Kekkei Genkai." She said to state each of her main weaknesses. It was certainly harder for her to speak of these weaknesses freely, as every instinct her father had drilled into her screamed at Yukimi to never admit to a fault. Brushing that aside as she thought about that training with her aunt, the chuunin continued with her response. "For the majority of my time as a Kunoichi, I've carried myself with an attitude of superiority. As if I were better than fellow teammates, and more important than them. This in turn caused me to think others as beneath myself, and that I did not need to put much effort into working as team. Selfish thoughts such as this can lead to irrational actions, or choices in the field which in turn are a determinant to the mission at hand. As for how to overcome this weakness, I must teach myself that I am in fact not superior to my fellows and fix my manner of thinking. Something which a recent event," she said before then nodding towards Claire, "and an... enlightening conversation with a teammate are helping me in learning." She added as she thought about her conversation with her teammate before, and how despite their rapidly different lifestyles the two had some similarities still. Something that she would not have even truly considered if she continued to think of others as so far below they were irrelevant.

"This way of thinking also led to me believing I needed no other skills than that of my Kekkei Genkai to be a kunoichi. Which while the Kekkei Genkai is a powerful ability," she said while lifting a hand and freely manipulating a small amount of water in her palm to form little spikes of ice without so much as a single handsign to demonstrate the ability. "It is not something which I can really survive as a kunoichi solely relying upon. As can be evidenced by the results of the previous exercise, it has harmed my progression in other basic aspects of being a kunoichi. I do not have taijutsu skills, or skills when it comes to using weapons. Not enough to matter, truly. As such, i will need to overcome this by putting more effort into my training in all areas in which I have been weakened by focusing solely on my Kekkei Genkai. I need to makeup for the time I've lost in training, so to speak." The girl said before finally finishing her little speech about her weaknesses. It hadn't come out nearly as eloquent, or concise as she would've liked but... she still found it difficult to talk about her own weaknesses. Placing her hands behind her back, the girl turned her attention holy towards Nishi, wondering if all their answers had been enough for their teacher.

She certainly hoped they were, Yukimi certainly did not want to miss out on lunch. Training on an empty stomach was... never a particularly fun experience.

Operation Safeguard
[ Republic of Water | The city of Shigaa - training field | At the eastern part of the Republic ]
[ Nishi Hirashima | Jounin of Team 11 ]

The first to respond was Hikari. Nishi was slightly surprised as she had imagined that either Yukimi or Claire would take first turn. Focusing on the genin's answer, Nishi didn't let her subordinates learn of her thoughts. To them, the expression of Nishi didn't shift or betray what the woman was thinking.
The answer of Hikari was straight to the point. And in Nishi's opinion, the girl wasn't that wrong. As a fresh graduate from the Academy, Hikari didn't likely know much else than the pure basics. Hopefully, Nishi mused to herself, Hikari would remember the basics well. Certainly that of following orders of her superiors.

The second to respond was Claire. Nishi wasn't sure if she was either surprised or content that the genin understood that she had too many emotions going through her head. While emotions couldn't be entirely ruled out and not all were bad, the girl had been a chaotic mess. One that would lead sooner to her death than thriumpf if she didn't took control over herself.
Content with the answer, Nishi couldn't help but wonder if Claire would gain quick enough control over her emotions before it could be considered too late. Deciding that the time for such ultimatium was far off and not necessary, Nishi shifted her attention to Yukimi.

The Yuki spoke up and Nishi listened. The mere fact that the chuunin admitted that she had multiple weaknesses did slightly amuse Nishi somewhat. But she remained silent and held her cynical thoughts to herself as Yukimi spoke further.
As Yukimi stated that she had to come to terms that she was far from being superior, Nishi wondered if it was merely due to the girl's miserable feats these last few months or if somebody had managed to get to the girl's mind. Wondering if she had to thank Kukiko, Yukimi cleared out who was partially responsible for the change.
It was quite ironic, to Nishi, that a genin had to teach a chuunin with superiority attitude to change her ways. Moreso that Nishi could remember that Kukiko promised that she would address the issue. Had the aunt of Yukimi failed? Determining not to linger on the thoughts, Nishi would let a silence echo after Yukimi's words.

The silence would become unbearable as Nishi wasn't in any rush to reveal what fate the answers of the girls would conjure. Enjoying the prospect of simply making them unnerving and likely pondering on what the decision would be, Nishi
"The answers are good enough. You lot will not be punished. However," Nishi began, "Hikari. Lack of experience is indeed a weakeness. But so is a lack of understanding of what you're less competent at. Rarely have I seen or experienced a genin that is potent at all basic fields. A lack of certain specialism can be considered a weakness as well."
Nishi turned her attention to Claire.
"Lack of control over your emotions is indeed a hinderance. Either during the cruxicble of battle or under the tense pressure of a mission, you can get an entire team wiped from existence by not controlling your emotions. However, the mere fact that you lack a certain specialism to aid the team can be considered a weakness."
Then it was Yukimi's turn.
"Considering yourself superior as a chuunin is simply put, idiotic. A middling soldier is nothing more than a nameless grunt that will wind up with an unmarked grave. And though you focused a lot on your kekkei genkei, you have seen the results of the lack on having a firm grip on your basics," the jounin gestured to the targets that had been pelted before by projectiles, "you performed rather horribly, compared to what is expected of a chuunin."

Letting her words bite and dig deep, Nishi placed her gloved hands on her hips.
"Anyhow, it isn't impossible to train and work at those flaws. If you all are willing to pour effort in it. But seeing your answers did not cause any discontent, each of you is allowed to ask one thing in return. Keep in mind though," the left eyebrow of the jounin subtly perked up by a small bit, "I will certainly decide if you are capable of bearing the truth. Or if I should deign it necessary to share anything about me."

Answers and a Question

[ Republic of the Water Country | The City of Shigaa ]
[ Hikari Torimoto | Genin of Team 11 ]

Listening to her teammates as they went forth and answered the question, Hikari felt like she had learned something about both. One was apparently letting her emotions get the best of her, and one apparently did not hold the right level for many of the required skills for her rank, supposedly being cocky while also relying too much on her kekkei genkai. While the details didn't give much about the two as people, she did hope that it meant that both were going to strive to push forward the best they possibly could. It would stay silent for some time, with Hikari feeling nervous as she did not know what to expect.

Nishi then began speaking, going over each of them in the order they answered, while also telling them they won't be punished, which offered some relief to Hikari. As she heard what her sensei had to say about her own answer, she pondered about it. Back at the academy, she wasn't noted to have any specific skill that she excelled at, only that she was average with all the skills. While she wondered if that meant she wasn't really potent at any of them, she decided that she will later ask Hirashima-sensei for help in determining what skills she is less competent in. She hardly knew how to determine this herself, and figured that asking for help with this would also show further willingness and desire to improve. Perhaps she will also be able to learn what skill she should strive to be more specialized in.

She went on to talk to the other two, going over the answers they offered, Hikari made sure to listen carefully to those as well. Even if they were not weaknesses that were noted by her, knowing to learn from others was something she felt could be good too. The notes given to the other two sounded rather specific, but when Nishi also gestured to the targets which they used for target practice, she decided she would also ask later for what would be good training regime for projectile training.

Finally, she allowed them to ask her a question, one from each. When she noted that she might not answer any question they may present, Hikari gave it a moment longer of thought. She wanted to make sure she would ask a good question, one that might help her learn and improve. After some thought, she decided on a question "What was the skill you had the hardest time training and improving?" She asked. She felt that if Nishi had such a skill, then it might be good to ask for training from her for that skill. Those that worked hardest to improve often showed how great their resolve was, in Hikari's opinion.

A Curious Question
Claire Rose
Team 11 Genin
Shigaa, Training Grounds

Listening to Yukimi she was happy the chuunin could admit some sort of weakness and when she was acknowledged as being a bit of help, Claire was glad she did bring that to the other. Once each was finished explaining to Nishi she went over each answer that was given starting with Hikari and ending with Yukimi. Paying attention to what the jounin said she kept in mind each answer their sensei gave. It seemed she felt they needed to find what they lacked in specifics and work on that given skill set. When the woman had finished they were given the okay to ask a question. Hikari had started asking first, going over which technique was the hardest for Nishi to learn and improve.

There were many things Claire was curious about when it came to Nishi. She held many things to herself but also was honest if asked, which was admirable. The girl was unsure what she would ask and what would be appropriate. Considering the woman did warn them about the truth or if the question deemed an answer she didn't want to step on any toes. Thinking it over for a few more moments she opened her mouth to speak. "I know the world is more than what we see, so what would you say is the hardest thing you've had to learn about life in general?" Maybe if she knew what life lessons were hard she could learn how to deal with them sooner than later. To learn how to control herself in the situation and not overreacting. Looking at Nishi for a moment she looked over at Yukimi and wondered what sort of question her teammate would ask. Giving their sensei her gaze once more she stood silent, waiting for the answer.

As he goes through camp, he stumbles upon a familiar face. Meeting with Meilin, he is rather happy to sit down and talk with the latter. The two engage into a lengthy engagement.

A chuckle came from him, not of mocking nature but more of amusement. Before she was saying that she couldn't really be of much help and yet she was giving solid advice. The more he spoke with her, the more he wanted to know about her as well. In fact he'd go so far as to say he hated when their talks ended even if they didn't know each other that long.
"True enough, you know despite you saying you would be of no help. You are far more helpful than you realize, or maybe you just refuse to accept such a thing." Kazumo stated before looking around at the camp with a small smile, yet also a worried look.
"I had planned to use this as an opportunity to get more well known. I know, weird using war as a way to make a name for yourself and then using that to get backing for a goal of unification."

Rubbing the back of his head while looking away, like someone getting caught doing something bad and trying not to look at the judging stares. His eyes would slowly trail up to meet her once more. "Yet its rude of me to only speak about what I've been doing. What about yourself? It must be a bit stressful leading a team while having to take responsibility for a Genin."

Meilin considered the possibility that she was just difficult. Knowing that she could be, she decided not to joke about it as it seemed important enough for Kazumo to actually take her seriously. The mere thought that she was giving advice to somebody on to unify the Sarutobi clans was a bit intimidating and odd. When he spoke of using a war to make a name for himself, Meilin didn't consider it strange, at all.
"Many made a name through conflict. Just think about the Great War. All the stories of various leaders and renowned people? Without the Great War, who knows what could have happened? Perhaps we would never had a Hon as Third Hokage. Maybe we then never heard of Hisoka Uchiha or seen the rise of her Majesty. Besides, you don't really strike me as the power-hungry idiot." Flashing a smile, Meilin continued. "Just somebody who knocked their head really hard. And now is having the bright idea to unify a group of clans who haven't been unified under a leader for centuries."

When he asked how she was doing, Meilin wanted to sigh and just whine. Though she was holding up, there were so many things that she desired to be different. Frowning slightly, Meilin gazed upwards for a moment as she started to respond to his question.
"Leading a team can be stressful, yes. Certainly when you are dealing with people who don't go along at first. Or who have different views. Or one just being a blunt cunt," Meilin said as a soft smile crossed her lips once more, "but I actually like them. Even the blunt cunt. More than I will ever tell him outright. But with the training that I have been following and doing, I am actually yearning for the deployment. It is a silly thought but I rather be wary of what is around the corner than to continue dealing with the this and thats. Or trying to patch up a bleeding pig, again! Dear gods, I like following the medical training but they keep making us patch up pigs. I can't see any pork or bacon without just hearing the squealing."
Sighing out loud, Meilin lowered her gaze, returning it on Kazumo.
"But I am holding out. If anything, I do like the fact that we are being trained and instructed. It feels good to have a certain purpose to work towards. I certainly prefer it over being just in some city and, well, yeah."
Meilin made a vague gesture with her hand, as if that would clear up what she was trying to convey.
"You know. With just sitting down and such. It isn't bad but certainly not inspiring to make more strides like I am doing now. Well, save it for now and today."

Her words were true enough, war brought many people who may not be as well known if such conflicts never happened. Zakito being a prime example, he did after all kill several of the Republics Leaders back then. It did make him wonder though how things might be if such events never did happen, Yet that was more so appealing to his interests in the what ifs on history. Something he could talk hours on yet he would spare her the pain of having to even attempt to listen to him droll on and on about such things. Besides he quite like the fact Zakito did get to where he was today, he might never have gotten the advice he had from him.

As she started talking about events revolving around her as of late, he kept his attention on her. A puzzled look did come upon his face as she spoke of her team and the difficulties, with them not getting along at first, sharing different views on matters. Which made sense, most people had a different mindset when it came to how things should roll. Probably more so in a team where you were all Chuunin besides the one Genin. Yet the puzzled look was more so about one difficulty being the one just being a blunt cunt. It did cause a small chuckle though as he kind of knew which one it was. He didn't interact much with her team but one could get a small basis on their personality by looking.
Aoi seemed like the mother figure of the group, although she did get a little crazy when she drank.
Dagrun while he would feel more at ease talking with also put him on edge, wouldn't say she was a bad person though.
Then their was Madoc which he wanted to say was a nice guy but…. as Meilin pointed out. He seemed like a cunt. Yet it was good that she trusted her team, he never had that feeling with his own and it made him a bit envious of the fact.

A small pitying smile resided on his face after her talking about not being able to look at pork or bacon with hearing a squealing pig. "Well It's probably a way to get you used to hearing screams of that sound… Well let me rephrase that." Kazumo said holding up a finger, not trying to make it sound like healing soldiers who screamed like pigs.
"Like I'm sure the sound is highly unpleasant, so if you can get used to that sound, then it might make it easier for you to focus when its the real deal. Although I have to give you respect for it, I don't know how to heal, but I couldn't see myself doing such a thing. Hopefully you won't have to be using the training all the time when were over there." Kazumo stated as a small playful smile grew on his face.
"Although if you ever need practice, I could always get slapped and squeal until its healed." he jested as he didn't intend to get injured well injured badly enough to need medical attention. He might actually get slapped for that.

Nodding as he understood wanting to improve himself and get better, he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as she said that she didn't like sitting around, now and today was a different case. A small smile dawned on his face, not quite expecting that response but it made him happy to hear it nonetheless "Is that so? Well I enjoy talking with you as well….. So I gotta ask though." Kazumo said leaning a bit forward as a small smirk grew on his face, he then pointed at the drawing she was still covering up.
"Think I could get a peek at what you are drawing there? We did make a deal that you would show me first. Remember?~" Kazumo said in a rather playful tone, he was curious to what she would draw. Kouta always said he drew from what inspired him, so he was curious if she also did the same thing.

Throwing an amused look at Kazumo as he was being a typical guy, Meilin remained silent and let him talk. He tried to give a reason for it while she was already aware of why she had to practice on bleeding, squealing pigs.
"Hm?"
Meilin would cast a glance at the paper she was still covering. The amusement vanished as realization started to dawn on Meilin.
"We did, yeah." Meilin said, actually considering to either quickly ruin or destroy her current work. It was actually one of the better ones as she had managed to sneak in more practice.

"A promise is a promise, I suppose," Meilin mumbled as she would slowly straighten her back. "It is one that I didn't destroy out of frustration. Observed some people to get this result. I didn't go into too much detail. Bit hard with the charcoal and, well," Meilin frowned a little, "yeah. Cause I fear that I would ruin it like many others. I am starting to run out of paper, rather quickly."

unknown.png

It was slightly amusing watching her realize they did make this deal, more so that she was slowly taking her time to show him what she was drawing. So far she had that artist attitude, destroying her drawing if she "ruined" them. Although he could understand charcoal not being the best drawing material. He did after all use his charcoal to mark areas hes been when hunting. Although he didn't quite expect her to be already running out of charcoal quite so soon.

As she showed him the drawing he would observe it in silence for a few seconds as his eyes scanned the drawing. "It's been a week or so since I gave you the paper and charcoal right?" Kazumo asked still looking at the drawing. "So do tell me how you say you ruined the others but this is far from being ruined. In fact it's honestly quite good and still pretty detailed for such a short time drawing."

"Multiple weeks." Meilin said, not feeling entirely comfortable with how much he liked it. It was nice but at the same time, she didn't entirely feel great with it.
"Cause they didn't work out this fine." Meilin gave as a stubborn answer on his question. "Anyhow, I have been drawing this for several days."
Leaning a bit to the side, she would point out to the various details.
"I tried to practice how to draw this kind of armour. The sword is rather easy after practicing it. The length and thickness is tricky but not once you get the hang of it." Meilin continued to explain. "The armour is trickier. The facial expression? With charcoal, I can try to ignore some features and make it appear dark. Just having some spots here and there not too dark can give the idea of eyes and what not."

"Well it doesn't need to be perfect, you are after all a beginner at this. Besides I quite like how it's drawn. The charcoal gives it that dark vibe and the fact it's a man armoured up about to go to war says enough. I honestly think the less detail it has the better it appears." Kazumo gave his personal opinion on it not sure if that's even what she went for with this. "Well, it's still impressive that you are already able to put this amount of detail in, with charcoal no less."

The opinion of Kazumo did bolster Meilin's confidence, even if it was by a bit. She still had her doubts and wants for improvement. But it was nice to hear that somebody found it good.
"If you seen the amount of mishaps and failures I had to eventually scrap, I doubt you would be saying that," Meilin replied, unable to resist to shake her head as a smile sticked to her lips.
"Know what? Perhaps I will try to draw you one day. Though, you best then save up some of your wages. Cause I won't draw for free or cheap. If I want to get really better, I will need better equipment."

The thought of her saying she would perhaps try to draw him made him chuckle at the thought. "Well hopefully by then I still look canvas worthy and not a ugly sight after this war. Yet oef. Going for the sun's right out of the gate, huh? Well two can play that game only I'm going to be a bit more mean and not tell you what I have planned." Kazumo jested at her, he did know what he could do, the bright side was that he could never run out of material. It was just finding good material that would prove to be difficult.

Amused at his reply, Meilin's eyebrows slightly perked up.
"I don't like surprises but go ahead. I will make an exception this time." Meilin replied back, "I suppose that it won't be too difficult to find me. Now that you know where my tent is. Else just look for my platoon that serves in the Axebiters."
Though curious what he could surprise her with, Meilin decided to just wait it out. She found it actually amusing, opposed to feeling irritated at somebody wanting to surprise her with something.

"Well don't set your hopes up too high. Not quite the best at what I have planned. " Kazumo said which was true, although he's had more practice as he has been doing the craft for several years. Looking at the sky though he could see it was getting a bit later in the day. "As much as I'd love to continue our conversation Meilin, I should probably get more accustomed to the camp's layout. Although as you said I know where your tent is, so I'll try to talk soon." Kazumo stated as he stood up and gave his goodbyes to Meilin before taking his leave.
As he was walking away though he couldn't help but look back at her and smiled to himself before looking back off in the distance. "Sorry sensei. Gonna be letting you down on this one." he thought to himself as he walked off into the crowd.

Marching on...
[Lightning Country | Inazaki, a port-city of The Hojo Clan ]

The sounds of dozen of boots marching through the streets, resonated and drowned the usual ambience of the port out. The rather cheerful and busy atmosphere was driven away by a much more grim and serious one. Many mothers kept their children inside, instead of allowing them to be outside - playing near the docks and watch the various ships of fishers or small merchants come in and go.
But it wasn't just the children that were missing. A good number of vessels that belonged to the civilians of the port-city had to make room for the intimidating vessels that wore the Hojo flag. Yet several characteristics that one could use to identify a Hojo vessel were missing. What made it more clear that the ships and her crew weren't native was due to their cargo and garb.
The sound of armour softly rustled by the movement of the soldiers was accompanied by officers dispatching orders to their subordinates, coordinating their movement through the city and towards the camp that was built near the city's gate - allowing the soldiers to ready themselves of the next phase of Mareo's plans.

Watching the various companies of infantry marching forward, Mareo wondered briefly what his father would think. The Iron country had decided to send additional forces to allow the success of the Hojo achieving their goals to grow. And with the 1400 soldiers that were send, Mareo doubted that it wasn't for nothing. Several of his own trusted retainers spoke already of the quality that these soldiers seemed to possess. They were considerably distant and seemed to hold a certain distrust. Yet, their professionalism spoke out of their actions and how they performed rapidly by the smallest command of their superiors.
It brought a certain dread to Mareo, however, that he had to rely on such forces. If it were up to him, he would prefer to have a suddenly larger trained Hojo force. But he already was straining his clan's resources by drafting some extra forces.

[ Uyeda Miyara, the Blade of Miyara Clan ]

The troops marched in a long column. Various scouting parties were active to prevent that any hostile forces could ambush them. Some of his officers spoke even that they should consider to be wary of the Raikage's forces. But Uyeda didn't think that the Raikage and his officials would attempt to betray them. Even if they were shinobi-fond bastards, in Uyeda 's opinion.
The boots trudged through the snow covered roads that led from the Hojo heartlands to the lands that were held by Raikage forces and her current allies. Though those allies were shrinking rapidly in numbers due to the imminent doom that marched towards Kumogakure.
At several moments did Uyeda wonder what his men really thought. As true Hojo, the soldiers kept moving forward and didn't need any kind of encouragement or threats to move on. Their iron discipline held on, even if nature herself was being quite difficult.

Mounted on his mount, Uyeda wondered for a moment on how things would go once his forces would reach the first Raikage held forts and castles. Deciding to send out a small unit of riders ahead to alert the Raikage's forces of their arrival, Uyeda caught a glance of the accompanying Steel Sentinels.
The masked figures cast a colder atmosphere than the current snow and ice-cold breezes that troubled Uyeda's forces. Their steel masks made it impossible to even learn if the mysterious, silent figures were even human.
While Uyeda doubted that they were like what the commoners whispered at the campfires, he certainly couldn't help to detect that he felt nervous. Almost as if on cue, one of the figures slowly turned and caused the steel mask to stare at Uyeda.
In an act of defiance and stubborn pride, Uyeda would rise his chin slightly and keep eye contact with the Steel Sentinel. The latter simply looked away, to the road ahead.

Understanding his role and place within the hierarchy, Uyeda had no idea why the Steel Sentinels had been sent with the reinforcements. Perhaps they were to keep an eye that no officer would attempt to swap over to the service of the Raikage? Or perhaps they had more sinister goals?
Uyeda decided that he was more than okay with not nothing as long as he had nothing to do with them.

The days started to look more and more like the same. The only reprieve came from the simple fact that she wasn't required to do constant drills all days. Not that it saved her from any training. It was either the lessons that she had to follow with others under the strict watch of Corin Mei, who certainly made it not easy to lounge at the medical training. The mere thought or smell of pigs already caused Meilin's arms to experience a sensation of needing to stitch something.
And the captain of her unit was keen on making sure that she understood her role and responsibilities as well. Though Meilin did like to learn underneath both men, she was once more happy to be in front of her tent.
Opposed to previous time, just enjoying a bland and small ration as breakfast while watching others going on about their own ways.

Running as safely as he could through the camp grounds, weaving in between people all while his one hand held onto something and the other seemed to shield it the best he could from any danger. Other soldiers were constantly telling him to slow down least he get him or someone else hurt. Yet he had to be quick about this as he could hear more shouting in the distance. He knew his destination so that gave him the advantage in his favour of more time to do what he needed.
Speed walking into the living quarters part of the camp, he had to walk past a few tents take some turns but he would arrive with a breath of relief. Meilin was there enjoying breakfast, which now made him a bit worried he might end up ruining her breakfast. Yet they didn't have much longer before being sent out.

Arriving in front of her a bit out of breath as he could finally rest a bit. The shouting got a bit louder but nowhere near where they were. "Ummm… hey Meilin… How are you today…. Ummmm do you have time to talk?" Kazumo asked as he was seemingly getting more flustered by the second, his hand still seemed to be guarding something close to his chest, keeping it hidden.

For a mere second, Meilin stared at Kazumo. She slowly chewed on her last bite as Kazumo asked if she had some time to talk. Her eyes darted to his hands, back to his face. Slowly, her expression shifted - her eyes slightly narrowing and a frown forming on her brow.
"I do, yes," she slowly said, as it was evident she was confused and cautious, "what is on your mind?"

Oh no she was already defensive which was not how he wanted her to react from him asking a simple question. Oh shit! Thats right she hated surprises. Looking down at his hands then back to her caused him to stammer a bit.
"Well ummm you see….." Yeah he was bad at this, almost painfully so. In fact it was like he reverted back to when he first met her.
Taking a deep breath in then out as he crouched down so he wasn't constantly looking down at her. "Okay hear me out here, this is going to be odd. Yet it's how I'm.. I guess I'm rationalizing my choices." he started off saying before continuing.
"So my father used to tell me something that my mom would tell him whenever she did something that seemed crazy. He told me that if you have your mind set on something, whether its any kind of goal or simple pleasure. That you shouldn't fear going after it, as you might not know how long it may be around." he stated starting to relax a bit more.

"I believe I told you my mother passed when I was an infant, so I can't quite ask if this was true or not. Yet I guess she would always be the one pursuing her goals with relentless determination, always making my father wonder why the hurry. The point is that those words mean a lot to me you know? It's why I focus so much on trying to get stronger, getting annoyed when I come so close but still need help at the end. Why I'm determined to unite the Sarutobi. I do all that I do so that I'm of some….. Use to everyone."

Slowly, Meilin kept chewing on her bit. She remained silent, wondering what was going on as Kazumo continued. She already didn't like it that he started with that it was going to be odd. She had seen enough odd to know that it wouldn't likely be something she could enjoy. Certainly not when he was holding something in his hands.
Becoming wary that he was planning to pull a prank on her, Meilin wanted to scoot away or do something already to prevent he would get her to jump or become terrified.
Only he then began about his parents. Nodding to clear out that she was both listening and emphasising that she indeed remembered, his words didn't do much to clear out what he actually wanted to talk about.
"I guess I can understand that those words mean a lot," Meilin slowly said after clearing her mouth.
Briefly, Meilin wondered why he was being so different than before.
"Listen, if you need my help then you can ask. Just know that I was kinda well," throwing a glance on the porridge that she was 'enjoying', Meilin decided to not mention it, "well, I am not great with family issues. But well, yeah. Shoot?"

A small chuckle escaped his lips as he looked at the ground, it wasn't family issues that was for sure. Be a hell of a lot easier if it was. "Well I mean you are kind of close in a way. I'm not having family issues. Like I said, my mom apparently did many things that were crazy and my father only ever truly did one or two crazy things for her. One was to protect her the best he could and second was getting her things she really wanted." Kazumo spoke slowly becoming more flustered, his ears picking up as the shouting was now getting closer.

"Shit I'm bad at this… What I'm trying to get at. Also I'm sorry if I ruin your food. I have a new goal Meilin. A goal that I now value over uniting my clan. This ummm took a bit to get. I had to borrow Madoc so I could actually claim I went hunting with some help. By the way, I see what you mean by a cunt, but a nice cunt at that." Kazumo stated feeling his heartbeat pounding against his chest.
"Meilin… My new goal is to protect you. No matter what the cost, I want you to live…. preferably ….. By my side." Kazumo spoke as his hand uncovered the Moon Flower

Holding the small. wooden bowl and spoon in her hands, Meilin wondered if Kazumo had hit his head. His first comment didn't do anything to make her feel at any way or sense more at comfort.
Before she was able to comment that he couldn't ruin the porridge, for it lacked any taste to be ruined, Meilin's lips were parted for a moment. The frown shifted as her eyebrows perked up and her mouth closed. Only for her lips to part but no words coming out.
The sight of the moon flower was already a sign that came caving in, as if a hammer slammed itself into her face. When she finally registered the words, her expression to emit something closer to horror than anything Kazumo would likely like to see.
Managing to calm herself, Meilin decided to turn to the left and carefully put down the bowl.
Once she turned to Kazumo, she would move her hands to his and slowly cup the hand that held the moon flower.

"I am flattered, truly. Your words caught me off guard." As she spoke, Meilin would gently guide Kazumo's hands to close around the moon flower, "but this is too soon. Sweet, but too soon."
A smile did start to crest Meilin's lips as she would keep her hands at his.
"I need time. Give me some of that and I will consider giving you an honest chance. At considering this, step by step."

He wasn't quite sure how to take her facial reactions, it looks of disgust but she hasn't slapped him yet so maybe not too much disgust. Then when she cupped her hands around his that held the flower a knot started growing in chest, but then felt like a strangle on his heart when made his hands close around the flower. Telling him that it was sweet but too soon. His facial expression did its best to hide the pain, along with the swelling amount of embarrassment. Yet her next sentence managed to make that stranglehold on his heart be undone. She would consider him, with more time?

His eyes had a slight sparkle of joy as he smiled and gave a nod. "Thats fair. Do know though I do still plan to keep my word of protecting you. This was worth the trouble I'm about to be in." Kazumo said with a smile as in the distance Meilin could easily see a really pissed off man in gear marching right towards their position.
"Yeah… I kind of ditched training to come ask this."

The way how he lit up was adorable, in her opinion. Not that she would voice it now as she still had to take in and progress what he just told her. In a way, sure, it had been obvious on how he acted before. But she hadn't imagined he would come and rush to ask her to spend her life with him.
"That is sweet and I appreciate..."
Her voice faltered as she caught the movement up ahead. A quick glance made it clear that Kazumo indeed had pissed somebody off. Whereas she started to feel a bit more at comfort and willing to see the sweetness in the whole gesture, her expression shifted.
"Of all the times," she softly whinged, "go, before you get into some shit as well!"

"Oh I think I already breached the shit. You know before I get worked to death gotta say. Somehow working with some of my team is still far scarier than whatever my drill instructor is about to unleash on me." Kazumo said with a smile before he felt a rather stern hand on the back of his shirt yank him up onto his feet then start yanking him backwards which caused him to accidentally drop the flower as he was being pulled away.
"I'll get a new one when we both get back home!" he said before being dragged off into the distance where all you hear was profound shouting and swearing.

Watching the scene, Meilin suddenly realised that a lot of eyes aimed their gaze into their direction. Feeling a moment of fluster as she didn't like the fact that just all had transpired out in the open, Meilin raised a hand slowly. And despite she waved back, it was clear that she was feeling awkward about what just transpired.
Wanting to finish her porridge and quickly go away to not feel the staring gazes anymore, Meilin noticed the flower on the ground. Deciding to raise herself up, Meilin would walk forward and pick the delicate object up.
She had seen the flowers before but never had been given one. It cracked a ghost of a smile on her lips as she decided to keep it with her. At least, for now, she mused to herself.

Court-Martial Case: Yoshikuni Sadako

[ Empire of Akino | Amegakure ]
[ The Imperial Military vs Yoshikuni Sadako ]

A Collab between @Oetje , @Aliceee and @Nim

The spacious hall was organised rather neatly. Various officials had taken their place and various officers of rank were present to form a military tribune that would aid in formulating a punishment for the defendant. The reason why it did attract some curiosity was due to the fact that the defendant was a jinchuriki. And being the first Imperial court-martial of first rate within the Rain province. Due to these facts alone, there were multiple observations from various branches of the military. Either to witness the event out of curiosity or to study it.
And despite the fact that the city's jinchuriki would be dragged to court, Etsu wasn't the one being the judge. Instead, she posed as one of the curious officers that had came to observe the event. For a moment, she was suspecting that the jinchuriki would decline to be present. That wouldn't halt the process of her being going through trial and to be judged. If anything, Etsu had learned that the girl had ran before when she didn't seem to like the situation. Time would show if today would be a repeated scenario or not.

The judge would be a jounin that went by the rank of jounin, an individual that went by the name of Kenshin. The man seemed to be within his forties and the stern expression left little doubt that he took his current vocation not serious. Taking a seat on the elevated position, allowing him to overview the hall and those present, the man awaited patiently. The tribune of the case were made up from a small gathering of specialised-jounin and jounin. Etsu pondered for a mere moment if this court-martial would provoke and motivate civilians to press charges against the jinchuriki. Or was it possible to drag a Bijuu to an Imperial court-martial? Amused by her own musings, Etsu threw a sideways glance.
The prosecutor was a familiar face. A bald man with some small scars adorning his scalp. If Dayu was indeed Kuni's prosecutor then Etsu was curious on how this event would conclude.
The only spot that remained empty was the spot that Kuni would be taken place, unless she declined to be present.

Escorted by a couple of ANBU, Kuni kept her sight straight ahead. She had no idea what she is about to face, or how things will be by the end of the day, but she knew she had to face them head on. She had been given the choice to not show up, but feeling that would be an act of cowardice, Kuni decided to attend. It was her actions and lack of proper thought that brought this on her. And Yumi was right, she had to start showing actual change in her behavior. She was a bit surprised they elected to not place a chakra blocker, but she also figured it was best if she didn't mention anything about it.

As she entered the hall, she felt intimidated by the amount of people who were present in the tribune. She managed to spot a couple of familiar faces, but she decided to not speak up or put on a friendly face. Keeping her expression as serious as she could put on, Kuni understood any childish act right now would be bad, inappropriate, and most likely only hurt her. What little she had to go on was the advice Eiji had given her back home, but as she sat down in the chair that was prepared for her, she thought about how it came down to two things. Stay serious, and stay honest. Even if her actions were considered treason, honesty was the way to go.

Dayu waited for silence to dawn within the hall. He kept his hands at his back while awaiting for the sign that he could begin. Once given the subtle gesture from the judge, Dayu would begin. Turning to the tribune, Dayu spoke up.
"Peers, we have come together to discuss the decision on what to do with the breaching of various protocols. Miss Sadako has a reputation of running away. Not just from Amegakure but almost her entire career has been to run away from responsibility. It has come to my understanding that she has managed to garnish some good will from various influential figures. However," Dayu gestured with a hand to the defendant, "should we allow somebody to constantly mock the laws and rules that are held to? Certainly when we discuss a jinchuriki who has not gained us any advantage, to neither city, province or realm. Today, we discuss what punishment should befall this craven. For who in this room is willing to accept cowardice and insubordination from those under their ranks?"

Letting his words sink in, Dayu would turn towards the judge. "I would have like to call forth the previous team leader of miss Sadako. But he is unable to attend. For while she has been keen on running away, her peers and betters have remained true to their oaths. Unlike miss Sadako, they don't run from duty."

The judge waited patiently, as Dayu spoke. The older man threw a glance at Kuni but remained silent as Dayu was still talking. As the prosecutor of the case became silent, the silence lingered for a mere two seconds before Kenshin spoke.
"Due to the lack of eyewitnesses that can be present, I will allow the defendant to speak up. Miss Sadako," the judge threw a glance at Kuni while gesturing that she should rise up. "If you have anything to say, now is your chance."

Hearing Dayu's words, Kuni knew very true they had been. She didn't know exactly about her own reputation, aside from what she faced as a Jinchuuriki, but she did know from her own, personal experience, that she had run away quite a few times. When the judge turned to her and allowed her to speak, she hesitated for a moment before deciding to speak up.

"I won't deny having run away in the past, because that is a part of my history. But I don't know if I should be known for having a reputation of running away. Once, certainly, I have done so, with lack of thought and only driven by emotion. Not good representation of anyone in the Imperial military. If there are any other times that could show I am known for running away, then I would personally like to hear them, so I will be able to better understand how they were viewed as such. As far as I am aware, only twice were considered as such. With all that said, whatever the outcome will be, I understand I have misrepresented the Imperial shinobi force and military, Amegakure and the Rain. I stand here now, to show that I won't run away anymore. I will stand and face the judgement that will be brought onto me."

Sitting back down, Kuni couldn't help but feel nervous. She had no intention of defending her actions, which recalling what Yumi told her made it clear they have been thoughtless, stupid, and improper of anyone who wished to serve the country. And now came the time for her to face whatever came next. Demotion and imprisonment were the first two that came to her mind, but she knew that if they wanted to, people could get a lot more serious with punishments.

It stayed silent in the hall, echoing behind Kuni's words. The words didn't seem to impress either the tribune or the judge. The women and men just stared silently at the chuunin as if they were expecting to get a direction from the silence that plagued the hall.
"Miss Sadako, I will have a few questions. I want you to answer them honestly or remain silent. Also, the lack of eyewitnesses or more evidence than what your previous team leader provided means that this is a case of your word against what has been reported. So just answer my questions and then we can see what verdict shall be made," the judge said, his tone indicating that he wasn't joking, "Why didn't you try to communicate once you were separated or left your team? And did you manage to uncover who are responsible for your kidnapping or just leaving your team?"

"I didn't try to communicate because," Kuni hesitated for a brief moment before continuing "I could say that it was because I was taken periodically to somewhere I can hardly describe, had a chakra blocker and was under constant watch, but it was because of a reason that connects to my answer to the second question you asked. It was because I was given a symbol that was supposed to tell me who it was that sent me. Although I never got to confirm their identity, I know they are of Chonobi origin, and they let me hold onto the symbol I mentioned." As she spoke, she took out a necklace from underneath her shirt and removed it from around her neck, allowing it to be taken for inspection should anyone deemed it needed "I did have a personal assumption of who was behind it all, but thinking about it again, it was likely nothing more than my own childish dream." She finished speaking, staying seated and knowing this was an admission of guilt for not even thinking about attempting to contact anyone. But this was a trial. Her trial. She had to stick to the truth.

The judge merely frowned as Kuni gave her answers. The man leaned back in his seat as he seemed to consider what Kuni had said. The tribune spoke softly with each other before one of them would signal that they desired to speak to the judge. The latter merely made a gesture and one of the tribune walked towards the seat of the judge.
Whispers were exchanged before the judge spoke up.
"Miss Sadako," the judge began on a firm tone, "that symbol shall be taken. Not to mention that a sensor has detected that you're not telling the truth." The disappointment became visible on the man's features.
"You shall be punished with a fine for lying against the court. Not to mention that you shall be prohibited to leave the boundaries of the province again. As for your actions for not doing anything possible to contact your team, which could have led them to danger and death, you are stripped from the privileges you enjoyed before. No longer shall you consider the roof of Emiya as your home. You are confined to one of the barracks right away." The judge paused for a moment. "With the blessing of the Imperial Crown and the love of Taishaku, I hereby deliver these sentences on to you. This case is sealed."

The ANBU who had escorted Kuni would take their place to escort the jinchuriki out. The tribune that was present as several other individuals seemed pleased. Some did scoff or made it clear in their own way about what they thought of the jinchuriki as she was escorted out of the hall.
Remaining hidden among the small crowd, Etsu glanced at the symbol that had been taken from Kuni. A thought started to gain form in Etsu's mind, slowly evolving into a plan.

As she heard the final sentencing and words of the judge, Kuni's nervousness moved away to a feeling of slight shock. They deemed she had lied? She didn't think she had lied at any point. Once the judge had finished speaking, she took the brief moment until the ANBU arrived to her side to take in her sentencing. It was harsh, but it also felt rather fair. Sleeping in the barracks, her old restrictions back in effect. Ryu probably would hate the thought of her being gone from the house, but she imagined Eiji would think the same of the punishment, that it was fairer than what they could've given her.

Standing up as the ANBU gave the instruction, she began walking next to him. She hadn't paid any attention to what the tribune were saying, or what they were feeling about it all. She just figured that this would serve as the first step in her new path. The first step to show that she can change, that she can learn from her old mistakes.

Preparing new operations
[ Satoshi | Commander of the Lightning Forces ]
[ Eastern Continent | Wolf Continent, the Northerner's Camp ]

Sitting in his tent, Satoshi was studying the various maps that had been crafted lately. They were crude and certainly lacked what a refined and experienced cartographer could make. But they did certainly help to give Satoshi an understanding of the area. After all, with the last push into the wolf country, the allied force effectively controlled all of the country. But that didn't mean that their work was now done and allowing them to just move on to combat the eastern threat.

The harsh truth was that they couldn't trust the locals and had no idea on the number of settlements that were still being inhabited. Not to even bring up their possible loyalties, which could pose a real threat to the logistics that were slowly being set up. It certainly didn't help that it was still winter. The cold caused soldiers and camp followers to grow sick and the thick snow did little to provide easier movement outside the camp.
If there was any luck, it was the grudgingly cooperation between the allied forces. Satoshi was well aware that many of his officers were far from happy to work for a prolonged time with the Republican forces. Some officers didn't hide that during meetings but all were smart enough to refrain it during interactions with the Republican forces.

Placing the map on the table, Satoshi considered various options that he could take. In essence, they didn't need to do too much. Having his forces spread out would reduce their chances in case the enemy would launch another assault at them. Even with the natural defences that the allied camps enjoyed, Satoshi didn't want to risk anything.
Wanting to get up, the flaps of his tent would be pushed aside. In that mere brief moment, a cold breeze managed to infiltrate the commander's tent as a soldier resolutely saluted Satoshi.

"Commander, sir!" The soldier held the salute as he would begin his verbal report. "One of the scouting parties have discovered what seems to be an enemy unit. They have been spotted some miles off to the north. The scouts have reported it is those red cloaks, sir."
Taking in the news for a moment, Satoshi mumbled a curse. The news was both a blessing and a curse in Satoshi's mind. If all those redcloaks were the same, then that meant that the enemy was deploying them as a typical shinobi unit: to gain intel or to try to disturb ongoing operations in the local area.

"I want a team to be assembled and counter-operate against those. Make sure that those redcloaks are countered and captured. But if it poses too much of a risk, I want them dead. Before they can relay information to any nearby hostile host." Satoshi gave as order, to which the soldier once more saluted and turned around his heels to exit the tent.
