Summary:
Asvaldr's group and Kuni make their way their way into and through the Blackroot woods. Kuni learns more about their culture, and they get to see a rare sight along the way.

The rays of sun were almost like a faint attempt to remember the group of warmer seasons. The snow crunched underneath the weight of their boots and bodies. They had been traveling for a few hours and the vegetation started to become denser. Clearly cautious, each person seemed to be on full guard. Every little sound was enough to cause somebody to move a gloved hand towards the handle of a weapon or bring their hands together.

What seemed to be more unsettling was the absolute silence. There were no birds chirping or small critters moving about.
"Stay sharp," Asvaldr commanded, though it was clear that he wasn't feeling comfortable either.
Kuni was positioned within the middle with the majority seemingly moving around her.
"So, what do you know about wildlife?" Asvaldr decided to ask Kuni, glancing sideways at their guest of honor.

The positioning in the middle of the group made Kuni slightly wonder if Kiyomi ever had to go anywhere in this manner. It wasn't the most comfortable one, but the dead silence that surrounded them was much more unnerving. So she was glad for the way this was going so far. Upon hearing Asvaldr's question, Kuni scratched her cheek slightly "I can't say I know much about wildlife. I learned that a decent number of creatures will attack us not because they can, but because they fear us. A defensive mechanism, so to say. Though there are also a decent number that will hunt because they must. And yet, that doesn't mean those are the ones we need to worry about most." She answered.

Looking as Asvaldr, she slightly shrugged "Unfortunately, I don't know any particular animal patterns. I just know to always be careful when encountering wildlife. I've heard that it can be best to freeze when encountering wildlife, or that it is best to run, but I imagine both apply, just in different situations." Kuni said.

The hood casted a grim shadow over Asvaldr's features, which were further hidden by the linen cloth that masked the lower part of his face. Yet by the way he remained silent and turned his head towards Kuni, it was somewhat clear that he seemed a bit surprised.
"Ah. I thought you would know more. Being a shinobi, you know. And thus being send outside on missions." Asvaldr would begin. "But some animals indeed tend to become less aggressive when their prey stands still. It has apparently to do with being taunted. However," he briefly paused, "I believe it is best if you don't freeze. If we get into trouble, we will not stick around to fight any matter in these woods. I am sure that you don't know the stories. But a lot of dangerous creatures stalk these woods. The Gods may know why."

Staying silent as he spoke, Kuni nodded as he gave his warning regarding any potential situations. She then thought about the remark regarding her occupation as a shinobi and lack of knowledge "I learn as I go. I barely had any missions that involved wildlife, unfortunately." She briefly explained, sounding a bit saddened that was the situation. Most of her missions indeed involved people and not animals.

Thinking about how many creatures roam these woods, Kuni rose her eyebrows "I like to believe everything has a purpose. So perhaps these creatures roam these woods as a way to protect something? Of course, that's just my speculation." She said, wondering if it would make sense for someone of the Chonobi beliefs.

The first comment didn't raise much of a reaction from those around her. But when Kuni spoke of her idea, it became quiet. The looks shifted and it became clear that she was on thin ice.
"They are called soul-eaters, cause they are desperate creatures that want to devour one's being," Brynjar softly spoke, though his words were audible enough due to the silence. Subtly, the biggest bragger of the group would shake his head as if to notify that what she had said was clearly not something that came out right.

It remained silent and it became clear that most were simply hiding their true reaction away, not giving a glance towards Kuni or whispering in Chonobi instead of using Taika to converse. Eventually, most would sleep while at a certain time, people would shift to guard duty.

The next morning, the sun rose up as its light tried to breach through the canopy of the forest. The faint rays of light didn't provide much warmth or comfort against the ominous surroundings and cold. The Cho Guard group was working in almost complete silence to prepare themselves for the next part of their trek through the Blackwood Vale.

Asvaldr gave a few instructions to his group before approach Kuni. There was a certain caution as he closed in a bit of distance. The hood made it harder to read his features, that only were further hidden behind the scarf. The young man's eyes didn't hint much either as he spoke with a calm voice.

"We are leaving in a few minutes." He simply said, a pause following his statement. "I will need to state once more that we can't have anybody to use chakra. Seeing that you're a jinchuriki, I have thought about it."
Producing from the cover of his cloak, Asvaldr held up a slim device. Though simple in design, it was likely the most effective tools to restrain a shinobi or anybody that relied on ninjutsu. A chakra blocker.
"I considered to place it on you while you're asleep. Instead, I hope you will just cooperate and allow me to put it on." Even with the polite phrasing, the hint of a threat was clear. "Else I fear that I need to force it on you. And I doubt you will give me trouble."

The response from Brynjar, along with the reaction from the rest, made it more than clear for Kuni that she had messed up yet again. Though this time, she felt like it was due to a difference in beliefs. It made sense there would be some, but to see them react as much as they did made her feel somewhat depressed. Despite how they were slightly opening up to her, and letting her know bits about the world that she didn't know of, they chose to immediately shut down just because of this difference. And it hurt.

The following morning, Kuni made no attempts to approach the group, until Asvaldr approached her. Even then, she could see the caution in his step. Had her words been that much of a taboo in their minds? Before she could start overthinking about it, Asvaldr began talking, showing her the solution to her chakra signature problem. A Chakra blocker. Last time she had one on her, she was in the Amegakure jail, and that time left anything but pleasant memories.

"If that's the best solution, go ahead. I won't resist." Kuni muttered, her reaction being clearly quieter than usual. Last thing she wanted was to serve as a lure to creatures that were apparently 'soul eaters'. If it made the rest calmer, then whatever. Maybe she'd ask Aiko if she could just keep this one, and make it into something she wears in Amegakure. Maybe then the majority would stop thinking of her as a ticking time bomb.

Though his body language not showing it directly, Asvaldr didn't instantly stepped forward to place the contraption around Kuni's neck. His eyes briefly narrowed before he stepped forwards. Both calm and as gentle as the process could be, he would tighten the contraption around Kuni's neck. The cold metal would feel like hard ice against Kuni's skin but it wasn't that tight that it would cause too much discomfort.

Taking a few steps back, Asvaldr eyed the chakra blocker around Kuni's neck before giving a nod, which served to emphasise that he was content about the handiwork. "If anything, it is for a week or so. Then I hope I can take it off." He stated before turning half around to throw a look at his group. It became evident that they were ready to get moving. Throwing a look at Kuni, Asvaldr subtly gestured to Kuni to walk forwards.

The trek through the woodlands felt odd. There was the ambience of life around them, even in spite of the cold winter season. Some sounds could be heard from time to time in the distance but any large animal didn't cross their path. The group continued to move with a certain confidence, using various methods to know if they were still heading in the right direction.

Eventually, loud sounds as howling and roars could be heard. Sparking a more wary attitude among the Cho Guards, which became noticeable with the slower pace that the group travelled in.
Around Kuni were a few of the hooded and scarfed operatives while some others went up ahead. The scouts were led by Brynjar, who came back in sight with the other appointed scouts. As the few approached, the group came to a halt. Exchanges were made between the returning scouts and the group, the excitement almost tangible from their conversation.
Asvaldr would remain silent but eventually spoke up, giving what appeared to be orders to the group. Then as if nothing had happened, the group moved as one to the direction that they were supposed to.

"A boggart is in the area. Seems to be an older specimen. Not to mention wounded," he explained as he walked next to Kuni, "High chance that it got into a fight and lost. Perhaps by a pack of other dangerous predators or a younger, stronger boggart."

Seeing the excitement, Kuni was tempted to ask what was going on, but decided against it. Last thing she wanted was to cause all their excitement to fade because of her. Or to get the cold shoulder again. After Asvaldr gave the orders and then explained what had happened, Kuni gave him a brief glance, before turning to look ahead again "I thought we were trying to avoid Boggarts? One of the reasons for this?" She pointed at the blocker for a second before moving to cross her hands.

"We are, yes," Asvaldr began, "but we can't do much if one winds up on our path. Then again, judging from what Brynjar and the others stated it won't be long before it is dead. Depending on what kills it, we might be able to just pass by. Or need to find a route around it." The young man rolled his shoulders, an attempt to bring back some warmth.

"It is just that it might be the only time to see what we have heard and learned with our own eyes, instead of hearing it from others or reading it from a book or such." Asvaldr further explained, though he seemed neither excited or touched at all by the prospect of a boggart being hunted down.

Asvaldr's explanation for the excitement from the group seemed less than logical to her. They wanted to see something dangerous just because they had a chance? Just a day ago, they all shut down because Boggarts were considered to be soul eaters. Now they wanted to go check a dying one out. Kuni felt outright dumbfounded by this.

She started to whisper to Asvaldr "I've followed everything you told me to do so far, without a problem. But if you tell me at any point that we'll suddenly be going to see a dying soul eating boggart, then you can expect me to start resisting. Seeking out dangers, regardless of how weak they may be, is low in my to do list." Once she was done whispering, she went back to her silence, hoping that made her thoughts about the group's reason for excitement clear as day. Their mission was to deliver her safely. Not check out some dying beast.

A second of silence passed after Kuni was done replying. The head of Asvaldr twisted, to give her a sideways glance before he spoke up. "You lack some skill in listening and understanding," he brought up, a slight of amusement present as if he was speaking to a much younger person. "I said that we can't do much if one winds up on our path. The possibility is there but not certain. If the boggart is dying, it is sure because of what is hunting it down. Chances are that we might see what happens but that doesn't mean we will abandon our mission. Even if we never dreamed or hoped to escort a Taika jinchuriki half across the empire." His tone became a bit harsher with the last few sentences.

"Other than that," he looked at the path ahead of them, "You can try to resist. But you can't mould or manipulate chakra. Nor have you the skill to best one of us in close quarters without any weapon. If you think we didn't prepare for you to try to fight us, you should ponder some more. Everyone of us is capable of countering you one way or another when it comes to fighting." He decided to state, the harsh tone remaining.

And just like that, Kuni felt like a dummy. Looking down, she realized she kept getting the same lesson from people, and as much as she was trying to learn it, she kept failing. It was frustrating. Doing her best to pay attention to what Asvaldr was saying now, she took a moment of silence before responding "I apologize for my words. I spoke out of line. I'm more than aware that I am in no position to make any such moves. And you are very right with saying I lack in listening and understanding. A tip that Asmund gave me was to try and pay better attention. To not just speak without thought, or to ask about things before speaking of them."

She turned to look at Asvaldr "I'm sorry. You have said what you said as an answer to my question, and I retaliated in a bad way. The last thing I intend to do is to cause trouble. I have plenty of desire to reach our destination." Kuni said, before turning her attention to the group "It was also slightly hard on me. Ever since I made that suggestion, it feels like it has been nothing but a cold shoulder from the rest of the group." She further explained.

Some silence echoed after Kuni's response. The hood and scarf made it hard to spot and read from Asvaldr's features on what he thought or felt. Simply, the young man would continue to guide Kuni forwards while keeping an eye out around them.
"It isn't exactly a cold shoulder. It is more that most believe that boggarts aren't just ravenous creatures that have a real goal or place in the world. They are damned souls who couldn't reach the afterlife. And because of it, are what they are now." Asvaldr calmly stated to Kuni, "To state that they may have a purpose in the world just surprised some of us. Cause it is like saying that criminals have a right to commit crimes. It doesn't fit our beliefs, so to say."

The young man turned to silence once they heard some noise ahead of them. The cracking of wood was mixed in with what could be described as loud whimpering, barks and howls. Most of the group had already reached for their weapons as the sounds were ahead of them. Some seemed to already consider to move from their current path to find cover.
It became clear that the decision was with Asvaldr, who much like the group wasn't well known with the region they traveled in. Whistling softly to gain the attention of the group, the young man made various signs with his left hand. Without a word spoken, the group started to shift and move away, heading towards a slight diverted path while clearly attempting to keep themselves low and quiet.
"Stay close, if you don't want to end up becoming food for beasts."

Asvaldr's response, which came after a bit of silence, made Kuni feel like she understood them a bit better. Not everyone believed in the same thing, and she was raised to know that was fine. Though to hear their response was more of a surprise than a cold shoulder still felt a bit hard to believe. Although she had something to say, Kuni remained silent as she heard the same noise ahead of them. Everyone in the group turned alert and reached for their weapons, and for the first time in her life, Kuni wished she had training in a weapon that didn't require chakra. Following the movements of Asvaldr and his instruction to stay close, she kept quiet and made sure to try and also be aware of where she was stepping. The last thing any of them needed was the sound of a branch cracking to draw the attention of a chakra-eating lost soul.

The tension seemed to rise, making the air feel heavier and harder to breathe. More violent sounds erupted, followed by what could only be described as commotions caused by beasts. The group moved on, finding a path that started to become steeper but still slightly moving away from the sound.
Ironically, the sounds started to become more audible, as if the violent scenery decided to move closer to the group that tried to steer away from it.

Reaching higher ground, the group would find a cliff to their right, where the violent sounds were coming from. Climbing higher on Asvaldr's instructions, some excited whispers rang through the group. Due to their position, they had sight on something moving through the woodland below them, clearly large enough to make the canopy created by the many trees to shake and tremble. Eventually a large creature came into view. Its grey hide appearing grotesque and its ugly head rearing to find a way to go. What was more unsettling than the ugly appearance of the creature was the wounds it carried. Blood flowed from open wounds that seemed to be ripped open, the clear cause why the large creature limped forwards.
"A boggart," Asvaldr mumbled as he observed the scene.

It was evident that the beast couldn't reach them, even if it had caught sight of them. The cliff was too steep for it to scale it, though some moved away from the edge upon closer inspect and spotting the clear muscular arms and legs that carried the large beast forward.
From the treeline of which the boggart appeared, it wasn't yet clear who or what chased the boggart down. It became very silent, despite a loud and constant whimpering from the large beast.

"We will stay here. I want to see something," Asvaldr mumbled, audible for Kuni while he signalled the group. If one took their eyes from the wounded and scared boggart, they would notice that none of the group seemed interested to move further. The scenery was rare and attracted the Cho's attention.

Moving to higher ground, and afterwards also scaling a cliff, Kuni remained silent. The sounds that appeared to follow them around were, without a doubt, rough and sounded like something powerful. And from what little she saw, it was big. Once they were on top of the cliff, however, they got a chance to take a proper look at the Boggart. One thing Kuni thought upon seeing it was that not even a mother would call it pretty.

Hearing what Asvaldr mumbled, before seeing him also signal the team, Kuni nodded slightly. She didn't feel like the idea of staying right on top of where a huge, butt-ugly creature was, injured or not, but he was the one in charge of leading her where she was supposed to go. And like he mentioned earlier, probably each one of the group could take on her with relative ease, even if she had access to her chakra. The group was set up of people that were meant to help bring her to her destination, after all.

Sitting down, Kuni looked the view that spread out from the cliff. It felt much different than what she saw until now, in the Blackroot grove. Seeing them from above, like this, almost felt like the place could be peaceful in some manner. Like nothing could touch them there.

The wounded creature seemed to move towards the cliff, either too dumb to see it was a dead end or blinded by desperation and panic, driven by its instinct to try to survive what was chasing it down. Then out of nowhere, the sounds of howling and barking resonated. Like a deadly wave, a dozen large canines rushed forwards. The dark fur made it hard to spot what they exactly where, save it that it were large canines on first glance. But unlike normal hounds, the large specimen started to use what could be described as a near accurate military tactic.
The dozen split off in small groups or pairs, using their presence or lashing out quickly to drive the boggart further to the cliff. A few times did the boggart attempt to lash out and turn to face one of the large canines. But this only provoked other pairs or individual canines to rush forward and attack the hulking creature from the back.

Eventually, it became inevitable that the hulking beast was driven to a corner. It started to whimper louder, almost resembling something human to it as it looked up and started to appear crying. Its arms were stretched for a moment above, like it was trying to coerce either some deity or by any chance Asvadlr's group to come to its aid.
When the pack of canines moved in closer and their features became easier to spot, one would assume it were wolves. But an uncanny intelligence seemed to drive the group as it stayed out of range of the boggart. Then without any clear signal, a pair moved in on the desperate boggart. The later attempted to lash out to drive its ruthless attackers back but missed in its grab, exposing its right. Before the hulking mass of the boggart could attempt to retract its arm back and defend itself, four of the large wolves moved in. Their teeth sank into the dull coloured hide with ease, starting to rip and pull the boggart.

"Its doomed," Asvadlr mumbled as he watched the scenery unfold further. The brutal approach was only made worse as the boggart tried to turn itself to the four wolves that were attempting to drag it back into the forest. But it only left more openings, provoking more of the wolves to lung and starting to rip the beast apart. The crying became bloodcurdling screeching that spiraled into becoming louder as the ground became wet with its crimson coloured blood.
While Asvaldr's group watched, it became clear that death would be slow as the wolves seemed content to feast on the living boggart. Weak attempts were easily rebuked by the large canines while the boggart kept screeching.

The screeching of the boggart were anything but calming. Kuni briefly turned her attention to what was going on down, only to quickly look away. Standing up, she took a couple of steps away from the cliff, keeping her back to it. She knew that this was a part of nature, that for the creatures, it was kill or be killed, but to see it to this degree just felt a bit sickening to her. Putting her hands on her knees, she took deep breaths while mumbling to herself "Circle of life. It's all a part of the circle of life". After a couple of moments she straightened herself again, but she didn't turn to face the cliff again. The sounds that came from the boggart still felt like much, and the added mumble of Asvaldr didn't help how she felt.

She closed her eyes and tried to think of the positives that this meant. It meant there was one less danger to everyone. It meant the wolves would get to eat. It meant, if she were to believe Asvaldr's words, that a lost soul just finished roaming this world. Those three already seemed like plenty of good from the actions of nature, at least to Kuni.

The group didn't seem to worry or mind that Kuni took a bit of distance. Soon enough as the screeching started to become fainter, the group would turn away from the cliff. They seemed less wary than before now that they had witnessed a rare sight. Signals commanded the group to move forward as the group descended further into the woods. At a certain spot, they had to watch their steps as they clearly started to move down. If anybody was still excited upon seeing that a boggart was hunted down by other wildlife, they kept it to themselves as the attention was placed once more on traversing through the woodlands.
A break was eventually made with the bulk of the group taking it easy. A few pairs were sent to scout ahead but clearly not too far. Instead of Asvaldr, it would be Dagmar that took close watch over Kuni. The girl had approached Kuni and offered her some simple rations before settling down to enjoy her own part.

Moving away from the cliff helped Kuni calm down somewhat. While no one showed their excitement for what they have seen, she imagined they were probably somewhat excited, with how none of them looked away. But she had no desire to ask about it. Last thing she needed was to hear more descriptions of that. When they settled down for a break, Kuni saw Dagmar approach her and offer some rations. Although she thought that the earlier sight would've surely killed her appetite, it didn't. It seemed as though the long trek did its part, and she accepted the rations. Eating them slowly, she glanced at Dagmar, wondering if she should say something. But without being sure of what to say, she decided to simply focus on eating the rations.

The young girl remained silent as she ate her ration. Then as more silence passed between Dagmar and Kuni, the former decided to speak up. "So, you got a bijuu?" It was clear that the question didn't an answer as Dagmar continued. "Ever saw it like, outside of you?" She asked, throwing a curious sideways glance at Kuni.

Looking at Dagmar, Kuni nodded, but swallowed before she began answering "Only once. Just before it was sealed into me. It was big. Like, uhm, five boggarts high big." She said, though quickly regretted that description as the thought of what they saw before came back to her briefly. Shaking it out of her head, Kuni kept talking "I can give you all of the physical description, but it will be like with the boggart. Unless you see it, you won't really get what it feels like, to see something like that. Especially when it was attacking our village right before I saw it." She finished speaking before taking another bite of her ration.
"Do you hate it or believe it has some kind of purpose?" Dagmar asked, the tone contrasting the possibly cynical phrasing, actually making her sounding curious. "I would likely hate if what threatened my people and place of origin tried to annihilate it. Even if it was sealed within me." Dagmar continued, shaking her head as if she found the whole solution quite rubbish.

Hearing Dagmar's question made Kuni pause before biting into her ration yet again "I still believe everything has a purpose, including the Bijuu. But that doesn't mean I can't hate it. I do hate the actions it took against my village, against my home, and I hate how having it within me made most of the village think of me as a ticking bomb, or as more of a beast than me. But I still believe there was a purpose, a reason that all of it happened. Right now, I know my purpose is to help ensure the protection of people by having the Bijuu sealed tightly within me." As she finished speaking, she lowered the ration. Her appetite had gone away with the rise of this topic.

Dagmar didn't response. She stared in front of her, likely taking in the response that Kuni had provided. Before either could really continue the conversation, the group was once more rallied to get ready to get moving on.

Ugly Meets Cold
Kirigakure, capital of the Republic
A meeting between Kukiko Yuki and Karuko.

A collab between Frostedcamel and Gerontis.

Summary:
Jounin Karuko is to meet up with another jounin, in order to take over her team as Kukiko is transferred to the security unit that guards the Senate and Councilors. The two meet and have a meeting in which they discuss Kukiko's pupils.

Heading to the meeting point, Karuko chewed on a tough piece of chicken. The almost tasteless meat served well to keep his jaws occupied as he trudged down the street. Several times he threw a glance at bystanders, some subtly making distance away from the shinobi. This only provoked a soft chuckle from Karuko as he considered what he could expect from the upcoming meeting. It was some kind of transition talk, where he could get information on the team that he was assigned to take over.

If anything, Karuko was wondering if he would be given a bunch of genin or chuunin. Granted, the difference between the two wasn't always noticeable - both for good or bad. But he did hope that he wouldn't get a bunch of genin that were a bunch of soft cowards that would falter upon finding themselves in a bad spot.
The establishment up ahead was one of the numerous tea houses in Kirigakure. A somewhat formal setting that could turn informal. But in Karuko's opinion, it was just not the spot to be happy in. The tranquility and peace didn't sooth his mind or mood.
Closing in the distance, he twisted his head and spit the remaining bite on the street. Earning himself a look of disgust from a bystander, who wisely decided to not pick a fight with shinobi.
Opening the door, Karuko frowned as he would look around. There was a good chance that he was late but he didn't mind. Wasn't that, after all, the most fashionable thing to do? To arrive a bit later?

Kukiko closed her book as the only obvious Shinobi on the entire street made his way past her chewing on what looked like chicken. She took a moment to size the man up as she shoved the book into a pocket and pressed herself off the wall and toward the tea shop he had only recently entered. From the brief view of his face she had gotten he had either seen more than most, or pretended he had, but given the general trend of shinobi at or around her age she assumed he had no real reason to be faking experience. Passing a rather upset looking civilian she'd give the man a shrug before stepping inside and finding herself directly behind the shinobi as he seemed to be looking for her.

"Back here." she said to the man as she held the door to the tea shop open much to the shock of one of the servers, "I feel like this isn't the place for this." she offered as she stepped out of the way of the door, making it clear she wanted to take the meeting somewhere else.

Hearing a feminine voice resonating from behind, Karuko half turned around. Sizing the woman up, Karuko felt a bit disappointed. He had hoped that if he was going to deal with a woman, she would be more pleasing to the eyes. Not appearing as if she was suffering from a cold that leeched the colour from her face. Stepping out of the door, Karuko scoffed lightly before he spoke up.

"Good. Then where do you want to hold it? I doubt that it will be appreciated to speak of some matters out in the open." He replied, a frown appearing on his brow.

Giving the man a frown back as disappoint flashed across his face Kukiko would step out with him and nod, "I've got a place in mind." she waited a few moments before continuing, "And as far as talking about things in the open go I'm sure that no one is actively trying to enforce such a thing. The country has more to worry about then a shinobi disclosing a few names of Genin or a Chuunin every once in a while."

Kukiko walked in silence, the patter of rain and the footsteps of the man at her side her only real company as she led the stranger down the road before cutting into an alley and leading him through a maze of side streets and passageways that barely counted as such. Almost fifteen minutes later the two would step out of a passageway and into the beginning of nearly three blocks of burnt out buildings, broken walls and piles of rubble.

"Do you know where we are?" she asked as she continued to walk down a cleared road, slower now than she had been before.

"I bet you do." Karuko mumbled underneath his breath, already not expecting too much from either this woman or this meeting. There was some curiosity if she was either a jounin or chuunin. Then again, it mattered little to him and he saw no need to ask her that question to satisfy his curiosity about her. Following the woman, Karuko wondered why they had to go some distance. He had done this transition a few times himself and those talks had barely lasted longer than ten minutes. Before he could question, or rather demand, that they could just hold the talk, she posed a question back.

"One of the most decrepit neighbourhoods of the city," Karuko began, though there was a modicum of both respect and sorrow present in his voice, "First place where those dogs managed to break through and started to get in. Not very surprised folks haven't rebuilt it yet."

Kukiko nodded as the man spoke, a piece of her happy that he in fact knew where they stood. "Seido. The neighborhood is Seido." she agreed with him as they walked along the rubble, "They broke the wall some blocks away, but the fighting quickly spread from the breach. It was nasty stuff, those opening minutes. So I've heard. Did you know the defenders here fought to the very last? They held just long enough for reinforcements to encircle the breach, but not long enough for them to be relieved." she motioned at a particular building ahead of them, the steps to the front entrance were adorned with fresh flowers and still burning candles though they had yet to see a single soul since entering Seido.

"A particular fresh conscript took down seven Akinians as he held the top of those stairs. Seven trained and well equipped soldiers." she laughed a moment and shook her head, "They weren't Akinians yet, but you understand what I mean."

"I was in the third wave of reinforcements to the breach. I'm interested in where you were during the siege."
she asked, trying to gain a measure of the shinobi before her.

He listened, despite knowing the harsh history. The siege of Kirigakure marked in the books the downfall of the Water country's military prowess. Though the truth was much harsher than that. They had failed when they were stalled at some other points and were being pushed back. Even while aware of what she said, he didn't interrupt her. Religion wasn't some virtue or even forte of Karuko but he believed that speaking ill or bad about the dead wasn't needed. Not at the place where so many countrymen tried to do their best to keep the place that fall apart together or just were forced with a knife at their back to advance to fight against foreign scumbags.

"I was shitting my pants." Karuko said, not even lying or joking. "I got positioned at the harbour with some of the other navy boys. Intel stated that the dogs wanted to invade the port when a breach had been made. By the time that I got shouted to hurry my ass to the breach, the fighting was over." A second of silence followed. "I had to then stand guard and when I wasn't standing guard, I was helping to move the corpses away. Eighty-five." he said, wishing that he could get a smoke now.

"You were in the harbor?" she asked, "You were a Sailor?" she went on as she tried her best to remember the relative layout of the defences during the siege, "No shinobi were present at the harbor best I can remember." she nodded and stopped as they neared the outer wall of Kirigakure.

"It really doesn't matter what you used to be if I'm honest," she turned to face the man, "I'm the Jounin of Team 17, Yuki Kukiko, no relation to those Yuki." she lied.

"The team is four strong including me, all Genin. Two eccentrics, and the others loyalties remain… Fragile." she sighed as she went through the issues in her mind, "All are able to commit when needed. Now," she motioned with both hands to the devastation around them, "They would all have made great defenders of Seido. Willing to fight and die when necessary, but nothing special enough to have held out for their relief. Just like the real defenders here."

He was about to explain a part of his history. The previous thoughts of just getting this over with had vanished as the woman seemed more knowledgeable about the history. Certainly when she had seen through the partly told lie. His mood did take a dip when she stated she was a Yuki. His narrowed slightly, sizing her once more - as if that would clarify if she was related to those few Yuki who were getting more wealth and influence in the Republic. Unable to figure out if she was lying, Karuko decided to not pursue that.

"All genin? Well, shit," he mumbled, not hiding his disappointment, "If you say so. Now, I am sure you hold some sentiment to those little shitfaces but I don't really want to know their sobbing histories. I need the data that you got." He brusquely stated. "Anything special on the team? Something that I need to look out for? Demoted failures, disobeying rats and all that?"

"Special doesn't do them justice." she sighed and continued, "I don't really care what the fuck they've done or who they want to be or what they think they can do. They'll die just as every other genin I've led up to this point, the new breed. The ones that came after all die faster than they used to."

"Shion is rather proficient with a blade, but otherwise a disaster when it comes to jutsu of just about any kind."
she stated of the eager genin.

"Yuyuko thinks pebbles can distract enemies in combat despite how much she has been proven wrong in actual combat. She also has a thing for wearing a useless mask. I've broken it twice and yet she buys new ones anyway. Her sword proficiency is there, and she has a chip on her shoulder due to her father's dojo. There's potential, but only if she doesn't get herself gutted by an undistracted enemy after tossing a pebble at them and letting them in her masks blindspot."

She mentally realized not for the first time that those two would die almost immediately if they ever found themselves against a Lightning or Akinian shinobi team of the same rank.

"The last is a Hayashi. As in the Hayashi clan. She has Scorch release and appears talented with it as can be expected. But I am suspicious of her allegiances. It appears, at least from what little interaction I've had with her, that she is out here not for the Water, but for the Hayashi."

She weighed her words for a moment before continuing, "Given the chance I would like to break the Hayashi, dismantle her defenses and gain a true measure of where her loyalties lie. But I don't seem to have the time right now to do such a thing." she gave a laugh as she thought of the fact that this new shinobi was inheriting a broken team, "Any more questions?"

Now that the talk truly began, Karuko listened intently. He didn't blame that a genin was good at one field and trash at the others. They were genin because they should be mentored and taught how to be less trash. That or be used as fodder. So when Kukiko spoke of Shion, Karuko just nodded. He could work with that, even if he didn't enjoy teaching genin.

But when Kukiko began over the next genin, Karuko frowned and then seemed most displeased. "Great," he grumbled but would remain silent to not interrupt Kukiko. His displeasure remained visible as Kukiko began over a Hayashi. It wasn't indeed unheard that clan operatives were more loyal to their clan. But blind loyalty could lead to miserable results and endings when embarking on missions with such folk.
"Why have you not been harsher on the trashpigeon that seems to value pebbles and masks? Or disband her back to the Academy?" He asked, crossing his arms while he continued. "How proficient is the third rat with Scorch? At least, what you learned so far."

Kukiko scoffed at the man as he implied she'd not been harsh enough on Yuyuko, "Rich words from someone who knows shit about their new team." she nodded at him, "I've beat Shion so bad in training she spent a few days in the hospital. I let my team deal with an unexpected amount and level of enemies to the point that Yuyuko was heavily injured and spent nearly a week recovering." she smiled, "I've been harsher than many would ever think of going on a genin. Yet the second is so dense that I think it might be better she ends up dead early on enough that she's not involved in anything important enough that her loss messes with the mission."

"The girl isn't a lost cause. She's got the skill to be a great kenjutsu user in the future, but only if she grows the fuck up, and I don't know what you think you can do for that that I haven't already tried. Beating her teammate to within an inch of her life mere meters in front of her didn't work. Neither did letting her nearly lose a leg in combat." she sighed and brought a hand to her mouth as a bout of coughing overtook her anger, "I've been ruthless with this team. They either adapt and survive or they die. So far they've adapted enough to survive for now, but they won't hold out much longer at their rate."

"Rich words indeed, girl," Karuko replied, though the amusement rang clear in his voice. The fact that she had decided to beat up one of her students to make them abandon reckless ideas wasn't the nicest or most effective didactical approach one could make. But it certainly was within Karuko's style. Hearing more, Karuko slowly nodded. He approved.

"Good. I was for a moment disappointed that I would get some genin that think or believe that the world is a nice and beautiful place." He paused for a moment. "But glad to hear that some cunt from the good generation survived. Not many of us left, I fear." His voice twisting, evidently becoming a tad friendlier. "But alright. I will see what I can do. Perhaps if you ever request to take command back over them, you might get one back alive."

Kukiko frowned at the man before her, "I doubt I'm younger than you despite appearances." she quipped back as he went on about expectations. She nodded and offered him a smile followed by another bout of coughing. Picking up as if the coughing had never happened she shrugged, "I'm not sure how long protecting the Council will last, useless sacks of shit don't really deserve us when they're ruining the country, but I'll see what I can do to take this nightmare off your hands sometime in the future."

She offered a hand, "I still need your name asshole."

"Uhu, whatever you say girl," Karuko chuckled after his words. Upon hearing that she was assigned to protect the Council, he would opt against to further poke fun at her. Even an idiot would be able to know what kind of calibre this woman was at. "Spoken like a true rot. Do make sure that you can take them over sooner than later. I am terrible with kids."
Grabbing her hand, a smirk spread faintly over his lips. "Karuko, girl. I would say, it is a pleasure. But I never met a Yuki that I could endure longer than a day."

"The asshole has no last name then?" she said as she would flash a smile and then frown as he took her hand and poked fun at Yuki. "Perhaps you won't tolerate me then." she said as she caused her hand to practically flash-freeze against his before pulling it away. "If you need anything, or for some reason they want me for anything, you can send headquarters a line for me. I'll respond when I can."

His eyes narrowed as he wanted to jerk his hand back upon feeling the change of cold. Flexing his fingers, the cold lingered longer than he desired. Keeping his insults in his mind, Karuko scoffed. "You already seem acquainted enough with my middle name. No need for a third name to curse me with." He replied, more wary now that he was reminded he was dealing with a Yuki. "Fair enough. That is if you won't be dead by that time. I heard that guarding the Council can be quite dangerous. Standing all day, doing patrols. Making sure that no poor grunt can throw a pebble at them. Though," he paused, "Judging by what you told me earlier, you will have your hands full with all of that."

"Don't even get me started on the paperwork." she replied before offering a short laugh, "I have to go to situate the hand off paperwork now this is done. I'm sure I'll run across your path again sometime." she shrugged as she gave a simple wave and no goodbye. Turning she would begin the walk back the way they had come.

"Mhm." Was his response as he watched her taking her leave. Glancing at his fingers, he didn't spot any ice. The cold was slowly ebbing away from the tips but for a moment Karuko wondered if the cold and ice release of the Yuki clan was cursed. Flexing his fingers again, he would turn and head his own way. Memorising the information that he had gotten today, he still wasn't satisfied. But there was hardly anything he could do about it at the current moment.

Operation: Dark Symptom - Part 4 of 4
Nishi Hirashima, jounin and leader of Team 11 (Republican) | The Republic of Water, at the eastern fringes - image of location |

| The Council decided to send Nishi to lead a team composed out of selected operatives for a dangerous mission. Ranked as an A mission, there are many questions that Nishi and the accompanied operatives have. Questions that, hopefully, will be answered soon. |

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

image0.jpg
It looked absolutely disgusting. The material seemed to have pierced through the person's flesh, erupting from the skin as a pale symbol of death. The worst was the face. It was at this point that Nishi wasn't certain if she was looking at a man or a woman. The jaw seemed dislodged as a large hump of crystal had grown out of the person's mouth. There were no eyes as even there the material had sprouted out.
It stayed silent as the group stared at the victims. Though each shinobi present had seen horrors of war and the shady affairs that their profession could bring with it, none of them was feeling either confident or well upon the sight of those laying in front of them.

A whole street with bodies here and there. Each unmoving as crystal material seemed to have sprouted out of them. The silence that was present made the scene only even more unsettling as nobody had anything to say. Large pillars of crystal seemed to have grown out of homes and small buildings.
Though death had many forms, Nishi felt legitimately scared upon seeing this kind of death. Had it been fast or agonizing slowly killing the victims? The idea of having crystal slowly slicing, growing and pressing through one's body. To reach out of their eyes, mouth and parts of their body? It ran a cold shiver down her spine as she had to close her eyes to keep herself somewhat composed.

"Enya..."

The man nodded slowly as he brought his hands together. A moment slowly passed before Enya lowered his hands. His lips parted but he seemed to hesitate.
"They are dead. The crystals, however," he became silent for a second, "I can detect a faint sign of chakra. Each being different."

Nishi wasn't sure what that meant. Judging from the looks, there hadn't been any fight. Every person seemed to have just collapsed or decided to sit down before their end. Perhaps the pain had been too much and made them immobile?
Many questions arose in Nishi's mind. Then Yamada moved forwards. The others just stared as the man moved to a nearby body. Without saying a word, the man would grab the corpse by the legs and started to drag it.

"W-What are you going to do?" Koide asked, her voice giving away that she was much like the others perplexed. Yet Yamada wouldn't stop as the question was asked.
"I am going to give them a proper burial, damn it." He would respond back, the anger and sorrow audible in his voice.

So they watched how Yamada would start to line up some people. Their disfigured corpses would still carve out a grotesque scenery, fitting for a horrible nightmare. While Yamada toiled, the others just watched. Uneasy and unwilling to both interfere or put a halt to the respectful gesture.
Once he was done, Yamada glanced at his work. Then he would bring his hands together. Only to wince briefly.

Alarmed by this, Nishi threw a sideways glance at Enya. The sensor jounin nodded as he would bring his hands together. All the while Yamada used a fire release technique to start burning the bodies, giving them a last rite through cremation.
"And?"
"Right palm, infected."

The site would be burned down. Soldiers carried torches while they remained at a safe distance from the crystals. The warnings that Nishi had given the captain had been passed down to his soldiers. They refused to touch anything that could have splinters or parts of crystal touch them.
The pale crystal pillars would crumble as the created fire started to devour it, which was an interesting reaction. The soldiers remained far away from any pillar that collapsed while they continued to burn the village further.

Nishi watched from a distance. Their task was halfway done. They had visited the site and there was little that they could learn from it. Nothing that had been briefed could prepare her or the others for this experience. It made Nishi remember what dangers could lurk in the world. And how many terrifying ways one could lose their life.
Turning around, she glanced at the group. They appeared to be ready, holding watch over Yamada. The man seemed to wince and grunt now and then. As if something was bothering him. Yet on plain sight? He seemed more than fine. Enya, however, disagreed as he could still use his sensory technique to keep track of the slowly growing chakra signature in Yamada's right hand. Even when they had removed the few small, crystal splinters from Yamada's hand palm.

"It is time to go back to the capital."

The journey back wasn't that different. There was nobody or anything that attempted to stop or attack them. The only big difference was that Yamada started to grow paler and weaker. Nishi instructed Arai, Koide and Enya to keep watch over Yamada. The former two were, after all, medical-nin. They could perhaps understand in what condition Yamada was. Perhaps even find a cure or way to halt his pain - without killing him themselves. Enya would continue to monitor with the use of his sensory technique.

Each passing day seemed to become a larger burden for Yamada. The man had trouble breathing and even couldn't move his right arm when they were a day or two from Kirigakure. Koide attempted to do something about the pain but little seemed to work.
"Seems like it is spreading through his arm. Arai had decided to keep his arm still. Try to see if that prevents the crystal from growing or spreading faster," Enya whispered to Nishi as they were standing away from the others.

"And? Does that work?" Nishi asked, both curious as horrified of what the answer could be. Upon seeing that Enya subtly shook his head, Nishi knew the answer.
"Then I suggest we kill him and dump him overboard."

The cold and rather draconic decision didn't seem to faze Enya. Such methods or ruthless decisions were anything but a rarity in the life of a shinobi or anybody in the military.
"I disagree," Enya began, "we can learn a lot if we take him to Kirigakure. It is clear it isn't natural. This isn't some divine wrath from Miku or the work of a demon." The sensor jounin specialist lowered his voice slightly. "I am certain it is a person or group that did it. And if we take him alive, we can discover a way to combat it."

"If we take him to Kirigakure, there is a chance that it can spread. You saw what happened to that village. It will become a huge disaster if it happens in the capital." Nishi whispered in return, quite displeased by the course of action that Enya wanted to take.
"It is clear that he is going to meet the Divine. We can only do a pleasure by ending his suffering and disposing of the body."

"I disagree." Enya replied, raising his chin slightly, "We got capable physicians and learned folk at the capital. If you will throw this chance away, I will need to report you for high treason."

Nishi stared at the man. Her expression was blank but she couldn't help but clench her trembling fist.
"It isn't treason to protect the Republic." She hissed softly, her eyes squinting. "I am leading this group under the command of the Council. You can't threaten me."

Enya smiled, which turned Nishi's stomach. His right hand travelled to his pouch as he produced a small note.
"You are. And I am tasked by the Senate to oversee that nothing will be done to harm the progression of the Republic. I don't need to explain to you, ma'am, what will happen if you do obstruct progression."

Her eyes scanned the piece of parchment that Enya held up in front of her. She wanted to grab it and rip it into bits. Spit in his face and start to strangle him. But instead of giving in to her anger, Nishi took a step closer to Enya.
"You are about to make a grave mistake."

He didn't flinch. Standing tall and resolute, Enya stared back into Nishi's eyes. The smile staying on his lips.
"And so are you, if you won't comply. The Senate will have what it desires."

Arriving back at the capital, Nishi glanced at how a few guards came on board and carried Yamada. There was certain care to it but Nishi couldn't help but fret that they would become infected with that nasty crystal. Enya oversaw it as he seemed rather pleased with himself.
For a moment, the man turned slightly to throw a look at Nishi. The eye contact that the two made caused Enya to grin and walk away. Leaving Nishi glaring at his back while she stayed on board for a bit longer.

The others of the group would also leave the ship. Not much of goodbye or friendly talk was exchanged. Not that Nishi expected any. She would just head off to debrief and state what had happened. It was now going to be the problem of the Council to either argue or agree with the Senate.
A bitter taste started to form in Nishi's mouth as her frustration started to boil into resentment.

Time for action...
Amegakure, capital of the Rain province | Amekage office | Etsu Yabut, the Fifth Amegake |

Leaning forward, Etsu rested her head against her left hand. It was the sixth report that detailed about a district within Amegakure. Peace truly seemed to have returned. The police and guards weren't encountering anything that seemed out of the ordinary. At least, before the whole turbulent times of revolts and armed assaults. The measures to find any escaped insurgent or zealot hadn't, however, wasn't to Etsu's liking. She was certain that a good number had escaped to the rural areas around Amegakure. Either heading somewhere else to lick their wounds or to group up to attempt again. If Amegakure could truly rest, it would be when those bastards were dead and preferably in some unmarked grave.

Sighing, Etsu would straighten her back and roll the scroll. Decisions had to be made but it was a rather tricky situation. That peace had returned didn't mean that the people were happy. There was much to be done and that meant that some of her plans would need to be postponed.
First, she would start to write a letter of recommendation. There were several profiles of experienced genin that should be promoted to becoming chuunin. In a way, to promote various talented or experienced genin could bolster their operatives. Not just in a sense of their morale. But it was easier to send chuunin to do work than a genin. By promoting some genin, it wouldn't strain those who would else be assigned to watch over those genin.

Then there was the question that she had learned that some people had been demoted. While Mitsunari was occupied with the tasks she had given him, Etsu hoped that some of her decisions would go unnoticed by him. For he wouldn't likely be too happy about it nor agree. However, even if she was wary herself, to restrain themselves to take some initiative to improve their situation, could bring more trouble to the city and province.
Thus she decided to write some orders to recruit some people into the Tough Rats. While the unit had been remarkably small and unnoticed before her rise to Amekage, Etsu was certain that she could count on her previous peers and contacts to do better work if they were supported with more resources and recruits.

Another decision was to employ the 4th Imperial Division. As the Amekage, Etsu's responsibility was to guard the western borders of the Empire. Which both encompassed the River and Rain provinces. Even with the funding of the crown and strong quality of the Imperial forces, she was forced to divide the division into two. Located at strategic positions of her choosing, both provinces had around ten thousand Imperial soldiers. While Etsu wanted to pull some from the River and put those into use in the Rain, she was aware that wouldn't be possible.
The clans and nobility within the River already looked down on the Rain. Any decision to pull troops out of the River would only result in unrest and resentment from the River, who would likely attempt to start a game of political intrigue. Something that Etsu wasn't eager. Let alone having any time for such matters.
So she decided to write a few instructions to captains and colonels of the 4th Division that were stationed in the Rain. The border with the Fang had to be patrolled more often and while they weren't allowed to venture past the border or seek a fight with the neighbouring occupiers, Etsu wanted them to start escorting refugees into designated camps. It was high time that the refugees that attempted to flee the horrors that were occurring in their homeland would be cared for. Remembering the presence of Miyazato priests, Etsu decided to also write those a request in hope that they could perhaps provide some aid in receiving the refugees - who had the same religion as the Miyazato priests.

Once done writing the instructions, Etsu noticed how much time had passed. A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she realised that the day was nearly over.

Sshhh, papa sleeps here....
Konohagakure, the Imperial Capital | The Ichi Residence | Meisa Ichi and Mayumi |

Watching, Meisa remained where she was. It was both a curse and a blessing. And where she usually tended to be confused, which turned into frustration, she felt slowly growing at peace. The sound of the child mumbling sounds that were vague words, Meisa tried to understand what the girl tried to say.
Suddenly Mayumi twisted her head. A smile started to grow on her lips as she pointed at the pond.

"Wish!"

The cheerful sound rudely disturbed the tranquillity of the garden. But all that Meisa could do was to slowly nod. Quickly, the young child looked back at the pond as she would watch the various fish swimming around. A giggle escaped the child as if she had discovered something new and funny. Once more, she turned to throw a look at her mother.

"Wish!"

"Mhm." Meisa said, who couldn't help but to be intrigued. Which confused her. She had mentored a young Empress, advised powerful men who ruled the land and had orchestrated many plots that saw to it that Akino had been formed. Yet the mere odd babble of a young girl seemed to pique her interest.
Suddenly, Mayumi decided that she had enough of the pond. Raising herself up, the child prattled as she would start running as a young child only could, without the distinctive lack of grace or true speed, towards Meisa.

"Mama," Mayumi said, the tone having something demanding to it. Her small arms stretched out towards Meisa as the woman remain unflinching, still watching the child approach her. "Wish!" Mayumi repeated as she would reach Meisa. Her small hands grabbed the cloth of Meisa's pants as she would lock her gaze with her mother's.

"Fish," Meisa said, an amused expression flowing on her features. "What about them?" She asked, curious to why Mayumi found the fish suddenly so interesting.
Mayumi prattled something as she would squeeze the bits of cloth that she tried to hold on to firmly. "Mama," she said, looking up again to Meisa. "Where is papa?"

It stayed silent. For a moment, Meisa felt her frustration boiling. She wouldn't move as her gaze was locked on the child. The question had reminded her why she had so much trouble to take care for her. Though it would be hard to see, Meisa could see both of them in her. The sheer curiosity and cheerfulness of Sakamoto. The noble features that graced Hisoka.
And both of them were gone.

Her hand would be raised as her frustration boiled into anger. Her nostrils widened as her eyes briefly narrowed.
"He is gone, little dove," Meisa whispered as she would simply place her hand on the child's head. Gently ruffling through the girl's raven coloured hair, Meisa would close her eyes for a split second.
"Shall we go to the market?" Meisa decided to ask as she glanced at Mayumi.

The question caused Mayumi to look up. The child's features sported surprise and then she started to beam as if Meisa just had decided to hand the world over to Mayumi.
"Market!" She happily exclaimed.

It was something that Sakamoto did with her. Going to the nearby market when it wasn't too busy but when most market stands were up and operating. Carrying Mayumi, Meisa hummed softly a song as Mayumi had her head nestled against Meisa's neck. Yet her dark coloured eyes were quick to pick up movements and curiously watched others.
Walking by a few stands, Meisa was aware of how people looked at them. Mayumi was easily recognised and some people knew that Meisa was the mother. However, the more known sight was Sakamoto to carry her around.

"Strawberry," Mayumi nearly whispered as she noticed a stand. It was operated by an old couple that was handling business with a few people that wanted to buy some of their wares.
"You want some strawberries?" Meisa asked softly in return.
"Yes, I want." Mayumi replied as she paused. "One for papa."
"Mhm, one for papa."

Approaching the stand, Meisa would glance at the fruit that was stalled out. The old lady seemed to recognise a potential customer but then her gaze landed on Mayumi.
"If it isn't the prettiest girl in town!" The old lady said, a grin appearing on her lips as she winked at Mayumi. "My, my, aren't you growing already." The old woman continued as she shot a friendly look towards Meisa.
"How can I help you, miss?"

"Some of those," Meisa nodded as she made her order. She would react politely and let the woman compliment as speak to Mayumi. Though there were no strawberries, there were a few other options in terms of fruit and vegetables.
After done with her purchase, Meisa had seen the pitiful look of the old woman.
"That will be eight coppers, miss." The old woman stated. Which surprised Meisa, who frowned.
"I thought that it was twelve?" Meisa asked back, wondering why the price was suddenly different. Then it clicked as the old man offered a sliced piece of carrot to Mayumi - who sheepishly accepted it and produced a mumbled 'thanks' back.

It wasn't a long journey to get back home. Once back, Meisa decided to spend time to prepare for their next course of action. Preparing some easy meal, Meisa threw a look sideways.
With all the focus, Mayumi stared at her handiwork. She was trying to fill three bowls with some rice with a spoon. Carefully the child tried to not spill a single grain.
Then it happened and Mayumi's eyes widened. The sheer panic and realisation that she had let a few grain of rice falling caused Mayumi to throw a subtle look at her mother. Noticing that her mother was watching, Mayumi frowned and looked back at the grains of rice, only to twist her head and look at Meisa.

"It was accident..."
"It is okay..."

"The ants go marching," Mayumi cheerfully sang as she would hold Meisa's right hand with both of her own hands. "One by one," Mayumi kept singing. "Hurrah! Hurrah!"

Amused, Meisa shot a look at the young child as she would prattle for a moment, only to continue.
""Boom, boom, boom! She said, a frown appearing on her face as she would lower her voice, as much as it was possible for her.
"The ants go marching," Mayumi paused as she would look around, only to pick up where she left. "Two by two. Hurrah! Hurraah! Mama!"
"Hm? Yes, boom, boom, boom." Meisa joined in as Mayumi beamed as her mother joined in her in the song.

Arriving at the entrance of the place, Meisa would stop and lower herself more to Mayumi's level. "Now, we will stop singing." She said on a soft tone, which caused Mayumi to nod slowly.
"Papa is sleeping," she whispered, the smile vanishing from Mayumi's lips.
"Mhm. So what do we do?"
"We will be mice." Was Mayumi's response.
"We will be as mice, yes. Silent." Meisa said, offering a hand again to Mayumi. Waiting for the child to cling on to her hand, the two would continue.

Following the path, the two would remain silent as they passed gravestones. Only to take a few turns and ending up at one, where Mayumi released Meisa's hands. The small girl walked towards the gravestone. Her right hand stretched out to the cold stone, softly moving over the smooth surface.
"Papa sleeps here." Mayumi whispered, only to turn to Meisa. "Sshhhh, papa sleeps."

"Mhm. Sshhhh," Meisa repeated softly as she would place a piece of cloth on the ground to sit on her knees. Placing the shoulder bag that she carried with her in front of her, she would bring out the lunch that they had prepared. Mayumi would glance at her mother before turning to the gravestone.
"Sshhhh, sleep."

"Can you help me, Mayumi?" Meisa asked, throwing a look at the gravestone and child. "Yes," she said, turning towards Meisa and taking a seat on the cloth. Helping Meisa to unpack the small lunch, Mayumi would grip on of the packed bowls with rice. A bit of her tongue stuck out as she would turn to the gravestone. With the best of her care, Mayumi placed the bowl on in front of the gravestone.

"Wake up, papa."
Here lies, Sakamoto Senju....

The Allthing - Part 2
Empire of Akino | Sarutobi Heartlands, the city of Ardara - the city's fortress | The Allthing, an assembly that is being held by the Imperial Chonobi clans and factions | A collab between @ChromeHound , @Aliceee , @Gerontis and @Lesli |

| Summary :
The Thing is an assembly that is being used by the Chonobi people. Its main purpose is to solve disputes, make and proclaim political decisions. Many Thing sites are also often the place for public religious rites but that tends to vary with each Chonobi clan. The size of a Thing depends on the region and usage. A small village can have its own Thing. But at the same time, that same small village might be part of a region held by one leader. This leader can hold a Greater Thing, to which all prominent members of his region are invited to attend to this Greater Thing. There is also an 'Allthing'. As one can expect, this is the largest version of a Thing.

Currently, the Chonobi clans of Akino gather together in Akino to discuss some matters. The collab provides an insight on some of these discussed matters. |

This second and last part serves, primarily, to showcase how most matters are handled within the Allthing.

~~~ Part 1 ~~~~
The first to react was Runar, the jarl of Aegir. The man had a fierce look in his eyes as the current topic was raised. "I agree! Such a transgression can't be tolerated! Surely compensation needs to be given! And if that can't be given, then the demand of satisfaction is surely legalized." The man almost shouted as more inclined with the jarl's words - which was audible by the voices raised, stating 'hear, hear'. The large jarl continued. "Much like it has been said, we have been second-rated citizens for too long. Blood has been shed!"
"It might be in our best interest to not yet come with demands." The man that spoke was Thorstein of Dagny, who also rose up. "If we would just go at the Empress court, coming with demands that the Uchiha need to pay for this dire transgression, what image would that give us? We would be looking like mere critters that attempt to leech off the fact we share the same culture or gods with her Majesty." A few among the thegns and hersirs agreed, though less audible than the others that clearly disagreed.
"The only right gods," would be the chide that jarl Tórarinn of Birgir gave. The bald jarl slowly rose up as he eyed Thorstein. "I say that we do request the Empress to allow us to demand it from the Uchiha. It is a grave dishonour to our ancestors and us, if we would just let an insult as grave as this be wimpled away as a bygone! "
"The Empress will hear of it."
Zakito raised his voice, just to be audible. Giving a stern gaze, he would be looking down on the jarls from his seat. "I have already approached the Empress regarding the matter. And you can rest assure that this won't go unanswered. If this indeed was a plot from the Uchiha, this won't go with impunity." The stern tone made it clear that the man wouldn't accept any talk in return. Leaning slightly forward, Zakito paused as he would let a silence echo behind his words.
"We have, however, other urgent matters to discuss. This is the AlThing. We will keep order and move on to the next. Jarl Dowhon brought up a feud he desires to end." Zakito said as he nodded towards the jarl of Dowhon. The large jarl would rise up from his seat and threw a look around. His deep voice echoed through the spacious hall.
"I wish to declare that the thegndom of several places are returned to the House of Dowhon," the jarl would proceed with stating the names. Some men and women would proceed to stomp on the wooden floor, to signal that they agreed while others grumbled with disdain. Most would, however, wait and watch the scene unfold before them.
"Ever since the Shoji uprising, these places have been taken from my House by the jarl of Ecla. Due to the situation, my thegns were required to evacuate some of these places and the majority of its people. Upon return, it seemed that subjects of the Jarl of Ecla decided to take in. Seeing that our laws prevent a bloodbath, I present this matter before the Althing."
As Ulf, the jarl of Dowhon, would speak, another Hon jarl would rise up from his seat. Standing in front of the plateau on which their lord sat, Ihor of Ecla would remain silent and calm. He would speak up as soon as Ulf was done.
"It is true. I had send some forces to secure those places because I feared what those soldiers of Shoji would do. We all can remember that they tried to draft us into their forces. That they tried to oppress our people. When my thegns moved to these places, they were mostly abandoned! The enemy could have taken it but I made sure that the security in the areas were secured. I didn't ask for favours or rewards for my part as I consider that these places should suffice. They aren't major places or will hamper the income of House Dowhon." Ihor slightly bowed his head towards Zakito.
Listening to both parties, Zakito frowned slightly. He was well aware of the situation but it wasn't that easily solved. Both jarls were both prominent figures in the Hon clan. Both of them had a large amount of respect among their peers and to side with one would anger the other. Technically, the jarl of Ecla did have more weight when one would consider economical power. After a moment of consideration, Zakito would speak up.
"Jarl Ulf will gain these places back," Zakito began, having to raise his voice as some of the folk present would almost erupt in cheer or shouting protest. "However, he shall pay an amount of wealth and resources to Jarl Ihor. For it is clear that the Jarl Ihor has defended and fended for these places. Seeing that Jarl Ihor stated that these settlements aren't major places, I am certain that they won't impact the income of House Ecla."
The two jarls would bow their head, after which they would take their place. Some of Jarl Ufl's retinue and thegns would show their enthusiasm visibly. A certain disdain could be spotted among the jarl of Ecla and his folk. Yet none would dare to raise their voice to protest the verdict.
Listening with interest as the meeting progressed, Jora couldn't help feeling a little out of place. While he considered it a massive honour to be welcomed to the Althing, Jora was still learning some of the finer points of clan politics. The young leader did not wish to make a mistake, especially in front of the entire Chonobi gathering. The Hyuzu had just earned their place amongst the rest and Jora did not have any intention of messing that up.
The initial topic around the Uchiha invasion of the Blackroot Vale was quickly handled, much to his relief. Jora was not overly familiar with the situation, but it was clear how much it had affected the rest of the Chonobi. The meeting continued with a request between the Hon jarls and Jora watched as Zakito handled things with a diplomatic grace that spoke volumes about his experience.
When the issue had been settled, Jora took the opportunity to speak. Rising from his seat, the young Hyuzu leader looked around at the others gathered and lowered his head slightly in a gesture of respect. "I speak for all Hyuzu when I say what an honour it is to be welcomed to our first Althing. Thank you for your hospitality and for inviting us to such a beautiful place." Glancing at the other Hyuzu representatives before turning back to the room, Jora continued, "As this is our first Althing, we do not have any immediate topics that we wish to bring before you all. Instead, we would like to listen and to learn." Thinking of something, Jora scanned the room, stopping briefly as he met Colm Hyuzu's gaze. "Many of you may have known the Hyuzu clan of old to be quite… reserved, both in habit and in their way of thinking. I hope to change that view and show you that our clan no longer wishes to hide away from everyone else." Smiling warmly, Jora once again lowered his head in a display of respect and then took his seat. Elena placed a hand on his arm gently as he sat, a small sign of her approval, which helped to calm his nerves.
The majority of the Cho folk would mark it clear that they agreed when Jora spoke, thus giving a clear signal that they acknowledged as respected the Hyuzu's words. One of the Cho jarls would step up, throwing a look around him as he did so.
The large bearded man spoke. "Those words bring joy to my heart, Lord Hyuzu." Runar of Aegir flashed a broad smile, his white teeth seemingly whiter due to his dark beard. "With the Hyuzu craftmanship," the jarl gestured to Jora as he would continue, using his right hand to gesture to the Sarutobi representatives, "the resources of the Scyldings and," Runar followed with using both hands, spreading his arms, as he gestured to Lord Hon and Cho, "with the combined might of both Ylfings as Vythlings, we can do something amazing."
For a moment, the jarl waited as he let his words sink in. Taking a few steps deeper into the circle of space between the jarls and leaders, Runar spoke again.
"All of us here have blood that ties us to our ancestors. They came to these lands that we now have claimed as our own. They came from mighty ships and the sea. We have fought, killed and bled for these lands. For centuries, we have faced countless of dangers. Not just the Taika but hardships of all sorts. However, we are now into a new era. One where we are governed by one of our own. One where we can once more be like our ancestors."
Runar shot a look around. Certain that he got the attention he wanted, he would continue.
"It is a painful truth but our longships are no match for Taika tiremes. True, they might navigate upon rivers. They can try to outspeed a heavy trireme. But we know how war works. Running away doesn't mean you can defeat your opponent. Our predecessors have made the vital choice to shift our attention to land warfare. So that we could make our stand and defend ourselves. But in the Great War, how much could we defend ourselves from an attack that was led from the waves? How much did our longships help to repel enemy attacks?"
Hearing some mutter and others agree in a louder fashion, Runar slowly nodded.
"We were defenceless. But no more. I have received information that our brothers in the far north, haven't turned away from the waves. They have designs of ships that are seaworthy. That can contest triremes. If we would contact them and trade for their designs. We could build ourselves further. No longer would we need to fear that our shores would get invaded with impunity! No longer would we have to request permission or aid from Taika with ships! We would become even mightier than our predecessors!"
Turning around, Runar ignored the noise that resonated from those present. Shooting a look at each leader, he waited to speak again.
"I swear by the gods and my ancestors. If we would unite ourselves into creating a strong enough fleet, we could achieve this. We already have resources, manpower and knowledge of the sea. All we need? Is the design and knowledge from the Hyrlings."
Most of the Hon grumbled in agreement, clearly seeing some use or value in the proposition of jarl Runar. A few remained quiet, either wary or not entirely convinced about it. If anything, Zakito was aware that the majority of his clan were content with the situation. The majority wasn't that much involved in maritime affairs, that they would want to invest much into it. As some of the Hon nobles glanced at their clan leader, Zakito considered his options. An idea hatched in his mind, making him slowly nod - a silent acknowledgement that he agreed with the suggestion.
Some of the Sarutobi leadership were silent as Runar brought his plan up. A few did make it clear that they agreed, stamping with a foot or grumbling out loud. The Sarutobi leaders were silent, despite some of their entourage voicing their agreement. Then a few of the Sarutobi leaders would agree. Either with a nod or stamping with a foot.
The energy and enthusiasm in the room was infectious and Jora found himself enjoying the meeting more and more. With the topic of expanding their military prowess on the sea brought up, Jora became even more intrigued. He wasn't the only one it would appear. Turning his head Jora noticed Agun Hyuzu, a man known for his traditionally stoic demeanour, crack a wide smile and begin nodding. Mao, on the other hand, was scratching her chin, her brow furrowed in thought. Jora could only imagine what was going through the Guild Master's head. Perhaps she wanted to try her hand at ship building now…
A soft tug at his sleeve brought Jora's attention back and he glanced at his wife who offered him a slight smile, moving her head in a subtle gesture. Nodding, Jora smiled back before turning to the rest of the group. Raising his voice slightly to be heard above the stomping and other displays of agreement, the young Hyuzu leader spoke. "While I cannot promise to know as much about naval warfare or shipbuilding as many of those present," he began, gesturing towards the others before continuing, "I am very interested in the prospect of increasing our strength in an area that my clan was admittedly rather weak in before." He could feel Colm's frown without even looking him. It wasn't that the elder Hyuzu disagreed with him, it was just that the man's pride would not allow him to admit the Hyuzu were weak at anything.
Without pausing, Jora continued, "We would be honoured to assist with this project and I would like to offer the services of our smiths to help with construction and design, where appropriate." Lowering his head respectfully to indicate he was finished speaking, Jora caught a glimpse of Mao, staring at him as if she had just realized what he had offered. Worried at first that the smith might not have approved of the decision, Jora's mind was set at ease when he saw her nod and the ghost of a smile grew on her face.
The responses caused Runar to grin. The jarl of the Aegir spread his arms as he would slowly turn towards the elevated seat of Aiko. Making a respectful bow, it was clear that the woman was the last to either agree and sanction the plan or reject it. The woman had remained quiet, observing the jarl and the responses he got from his suggestion. Very subtly, Aiko nodded her head as she would flash a smile. Some of the Cho nobles that were present would stamp their feet as some even cheered Runar's name for a few seconds.
The fact that the major leaders of the Imperial Chonobi supported the suggestion made more people join in. Soon enough some were clapping or briefly cheering. The meeting would continue on with spirits quite high. The subjects would relatively go without much trouble as most were content on the decisions that were taken. Eventually, the meeting would be called for an end as alcoholic beverages were shared while those who wanted to retreat from the meeting would be allowed.
A Cup of Tea or Coffee? - Part 1
The Lightning Country | Kumogakure, the current 'capital' of the Raikage's forces and allies | Owazuni Teahouse | A collab between @ChromeHound , @conman2163 and @Lesli |
| Summary :
The current top of the Raikage force come together for a meeting. Spearheaded by Itagaki, the Sixth Raikage, and supported by his Raikage Assistant, Iri, and spymaster, Kaizen. The three speak of the situation that they are dealing with as various factors that are either in their advantage or pressuring them at the current moment. |
Nestled near the water, the Owazuni Teahouse was a quiet little place that made for an excellent meeting spot. Kaizen found himself visiting the site quite often when he needed to think. For now, however, it would serve as a safe place to meet with two people he considered rather interesting.
The teahouse was empty, just as Kaizen had arranged. Standing by the entrance, he glanced around casually, waiting for his visitors to appear.
Traveling towards the meeting place, Iri couldn't deny that she was curious to how this meeting would proceed. The fact that it was a teahouse was already a positive point. But she wasn't sure if it was a good idea to hold this meeting in a public space. Then again, it was orchestrated by the man who held the office of spymaster.
Which gave good reason to both trust and be wary of what would occur.
Arriving near the teahouse, she spotted a man standing at the entrance. Expecting more people at the place, Iri frowned for a moment. Approaching the entrance, she would flash a polite smile at the man.
"Is this the Owazuni teahouse?" she opted to ask the man.
It was interesting that the meeting place that had been chosen was a teahouse. Itagaki had never been overly fond of tea before he had come to the Lightning, preferring instead to drink a light ale in his leisure. As he had gotten older, he had come to appreciate the drink however, even more so when he had arrived in the position of Lord Commander, and now in the position of Raikage. Still, he had never actually taken time to really sit down in a teahouse. To now do so with Kaizen and Iri, one of which he was not entirely certain he trusted? As he approached he would give a small wave of greeting to Kaizen. "Afternoon Kaizen." The Anbu that were shadowing both Iri and Itagaki would make their presence known by moving to stand beside the pair. Itagaki would give a pleasant smile under his mask, not that it would be visible.
His hands folded comfortably in front of him, Kaizen watched as the first person approached the teahouse. Nodding his head and offering a polite smile towards the woman, the Spymaster could not help but find himself curious. This must be Iri, the woman whose background was difficult to dig into, even for him. Lowering his head slightly in a sign of respect, Kaizen's eyes never left hers. "Indeed it is," he said, a single eyebrow rising, "it is a pleasure to meet you Iri." Before he had a chance to continue, Kaizen caught sight of the ANBU that signalled the arrival of the Sixth Raikage.
Turning slightly, he nodded towards Itagaki politely. "Thank you for coming, Lord Sixth." the Spymaster said, before glancing over his shoulder. "I have made arrangements so that we will not be disturbed here. Please, follow me." Turning towards the entrance, Kaizen paused, "Your ANBU are, of course, welcome to join us." A slight smile touch his lips and Kaizen turned back, entering the teahouse and holding the door open for the others.
Once everyone had entered, Kaizen led them to a small room in the back of the teahouse. The place was empty, save for a skeleton crew of workers that the Spymaster had vetted personally. The room was furnished to fit a small group comfortably. The wall was adorned with paintings of the sea and the mountains surrounding the Lightning country. A large window provided a spectacular view of the sea, overlooking one of the smaller harbours. Gesturing for Iri and Itagaki to take a seat around the table next to the window, Kaizen would wait for them to sit before joining them.
"Thank you both for meeting with me. I imagine it would be best to start with the reason why you wished to call this meeting, however," gesturing with one hand, Kaizen would glance over to the far wall where a server appeared silently, bowing his head and awaiting his orders. Smiling towards his two guests, the Spymaster tilted his head to the side, "I'd prefer to start with a more simple item. Coffee or tea?"
Flashing a polite smile in return, Iri remained on guard. The fact that the man knew her name either meant that he was a subordinate from Kaizen or the spymaster himself. "Thank you." Before Iri could question if he indeed was the man that she was going to meet today, Kaizen arrived. Whereas she would rather not have ANBU around at all, they were most welcome now. Certainly with the troubles that had gone around in the country, some extra security wouldn't hurt these days.
Entering the building, Iri would briefly glance at the wall, where she viewed a few of the paintings. Though not somebody who was capable of producing any product of art, she was quite interested. But she would force herself to take a seat around the table next to the window. While the view was most inviting, Iri would keep her gaze locked on the man that indeed was the spymaster. Somewhere, she had expected a different figure. Somebody more shady and certainly less charming. Being aware that such stereotypes were utter rubbish, the first impression was thus so far good in Iri's opinion.
"I would like some green tea. With honey, please." The woman reacted as she would take her seat. Though she wasn't indeed sure what to expect, she had her own information at the ready. However, she was in no hurry to inform the two men of her work.
Itagaki was not so easily dissuaded of the danger as to accept the words of Kaizen as comfort. It was a risk, meeting this man in this place. He was not like the other Raikage who had come before him, or like Kaizen, able to just mould chakra and send a shadow clone in his place. It was the real Itagaki who appeared before the pair. The Anbu were quick to move in and fan out. A few more appeared, obviously there was more then just four anbu following as a part of the security detail, and they seemed efficient and watchful as they moved through the place, checking the interior out even as the Raikage followed him to the back. Iri seemed remarkably at ease, but he figured it might have just been her projected demeanor. You didn't live as long as she did by not staying vigilant. The Raikage was silent for a moment, but then nodded. "I will take the same as Iri, if it is no trouble." He would wait to start conversation until the tea had been delivered. "Then, down to business." He leaned forward and folded his hands. "My first matter of business for this meeting was to formally introduce you two. Afterall, I am quite certain the pair of you should be closely acquainted given your new office Iri." He gestured to Iri. "She is my new Assistant, however I am almost positive you knew that. The second matter is a report on the status of any developments regarding your task."
Waiting for his two guests to order, Kaizen glanced around casually, noting the ANBU who remained ever present. Once Itagaki had placed his order, the Spymaster would nod to the server. "Just the usual for me please Orun." The server bowed his head again before turning and heading towards the back.
Leaning back in his chair, Kaizen glanced back to Itagaki as the man mentioned his task. "Very well," he began, his tone light, "the task has proceeded according to my expectations." Raising an eyebrow slightly, the Spymaster glanced towards Iri, uncertain exactly how much Itagaki had told her. "I have located the boy."
Patiently, Iri observed and waited. Formality had it that their superior had to begin the meeting. Though, interestingly, Iri was curious to if this informal setting would still have them follow protocol. When Itagaki had begun, Iri slightly as subtly lowered her head to acknowledge Itagaki's remark that both Kaizen as she should become closely acquainted. While she wasn't in the slightest bothered with the words of the Raikage, she would be lying if she said that she was eager to become close with a mystery as Kaizen.
Itagaki's request then was on their progress. For several reasons, Iri was at the ready to protest. This wasn't the place to discuss matters that were important in the state's future. Even with the abundance of security that the ANBU offered, that didn't mean that others would attempt to eavesdrop on a conversation between three higher ups. Or that Iri felt any more comfortable.
The response of Kaizen, however, made Iri twist her head and look at the spymaster. The last sentence could literally mean everything. But if you took into account that more than half of the country was searching and wondering where Keitaro Ranzaki, then it wasn't far fetched to imagine Kaizen spoke of that 'boy'.
"I have scheduled a meeting with the Hojo. From there, I work towards the Jun and various small clans," Iri said, slowly tearing her gaze from Kaizen and moving it to Itagaki. "I expect that within some time I can see to it that some more clans are willing to turn against the Regency Council."
Itagaki was impressed. He had expected it to take at least a few more weeks to locate the Ranzaki heir, but Kaizen had done it before then, a feat that certainly deserved praise. "Excellent work Kaizen, though I suppose such a feat is to be expected from a spymaster of your caliber." He turned his head to Iri next. "It is good to hear that things are being set to make a deal with the Hojo and the other clans, though I am wondering just what it is that the Hojo would ask." He folded his hands and placed them on the table. "News from the front says that the war has turned in more in our favor, so I expect that we should be in a stronger position for bargaining with them." He cocked his head as he looked at Kaizen. "Can your servants be trusted Kaizen?"
Catching the look from Iri after he had mentioned the boy, Kaizen smiled inwardly though his face revealed no trace of his thoughts. It appeared Iri was quick to surmise what they were talking about. A fact that did not surprise him, but was impressive nevertheless. Listening as Iri spoke, Kaizen made a mental note to follow up on these diplomatic efforts later. It would be interesting indeed to see how Iri fared compared to those before her.
Smiling politely as Itagaki complimented his work, the Spymaster did not pay much mind to the words and instead focused on what the Raikage had to say about the war. He found the statement that the war had turned more in their favour to be an interesting one. His people had informed him of the progress that had been made, but Kaizen would not necessarily classify it as anything that would turn the tide of the battle. Remaining silent for now, however, the Spymaster would tilt his head slightly at Itagaki's question. As if on cue, Orun returned carrying a tray with three cups of tea. Placing them on the table, Orun would bow once more and take his leave.
Kaizen lifted his cup and smiled before taking a sip. "They are an extension of myself and I trust them implicitly."
Taking in the information, Iri remained silent. But when Itagaki spoke that the war was turning their favour, the woman's eyebrows formed a frown on her brow. "We are? The way I see it, we just survived one attack." Iri calmly said, her attitude shiftling slightly as she wasn't going to just let Itagaki consider themselves on the winning side now.
"It is certainly intriguing to know where the boy is located. But do we have him? Without the boy, a lot of clans won't consider you a legitimate protector of the realm. Whereas the Regency council has control over the younger son. Regardless of that child's state, he is still of royal blood."
Iri turned her attention to Kaizen but it was evident that she wasn't done. The question she posed wasn't just directed at the spymaster but to their situation in general.
"Good sir, could you please remind me. Who or where are the jinchuuriki of the Eight and Three Tails?" She wouldn't wait for an answer but continued to make her point.
"The way I see it, whoever has the Tamer of the Hachibi on their side, gains a large popularity among people. Both civilians as those in the military. The Saviour isn't just a fancy title. It is a means to gain legitimacy. Not to mention that we had two jinchuriki. Now we don't even know where they are. Except," Iri paused as she shot a sideways look at Itagaki.
"We do know that the previous trustling of Lord Fifth likely is aware of where the jinchuriki are. And it just is the case that she has the backing of the Sanosuke and Sato clan. So no, Lord Sixth, we are not winning. We just survived the first attempt. But other than that? We suffered losses of troops and resources. And just have one victory to 'back our cause up'."
"Two actually." Itagaki state simply, and then pulled the report and placed it upon the table. "The Regency's army was unable to escape and regroup. They've been completely destroyed." He folded his hands. "And as I recall, no matter what we are in a stronger position then we were at the fighting earlier this year. I do not believe it is an incorrect move to take some solace in this fact, despite that it is not over. However, I am very aware that the proverbial sea cuts both ways." He would not linger any longer on the topic. "While we are on this issue Iri, I can say that it would be good to find both Jinchuriki. It would be excellent if you could do so Kaizen." He picked up his cup of tea and took a sip. "I will arrange for an operation to go ahead to bring the boy to us. That should arrange for some legitimacy to our cause. We will have to arrange to bring the Jinchuriki back into the fold later on. Additionally, Iri, I would like for you to deal with a group of mercenaries known as the Red Swords." He drummed the table. "They are not to be allowed to leave the Lightning, seize anything that they own and disband them, imprison those that resist."
Watching both Iri and Itagaki carefully as they spoke, Kaizen's facial expression never changed from one of patient interest. Iri had brought up several good points, but it appeared that Itagaki did not want to focus on them. When the jinchuriki were brought up, the Spymaster tilted his head ever so slightly. It appeared he was to simply be a babysitter now. "While I do not imagine it to be too difficult to locate the jinchuriki, I must ask what the plan is once they are found. If they are somewhere they do not wish to leave, forcing them to do so may have the opposite effect to what you're hoping for." Straightening, Kaizen took another sip of his tea. Raising an eyebrow, he continued, "With respect, Lord Sixth, I am also curious as to what this operation to retrieve the boy will look like, especially considering I have not yet shared his location…"
Its hunting season?! - Part 1
The Empire of Akino | Sarutobi Heartlands, the city of Ardara - the city's fortress | Ardara's perimeter | A collab between @conman2163 , @Jason Targaryen , @timv999 and @Lesli |
| Summary :
While the Allthing continues on, Aiko manages to arrange a small operation. One that will, hopefully, see to it that some of her students get some more experience. The operation is fairly simple: they need to find and take down seven targets. The entire reasons for it aren't given by Aiko. The operation is led by Orun Hyuzu as the jounin leader takes a role as observer. |
There was a certain silence present. A light fog was visible, hanging low over the ground. Those who were awake at this hour weren't with many, at least not when compared to the activity that buzzled in Ardara during the noon and later.
Inhaling slowly and exhaling slowly afterwards, Aiko kept watching over the field in front of her. It felt good to be outside the city walls and enjoy a more calm aspect of Ardara. In the distance, she could spot various fields that were in use for agricultural purposes. And even further, there was the woods on the horizon. A silent and small reminder somehow of the actual first line of defense of Ardara: its surrounding woods.
Throwing a look over her shoulder, Aiko viewed briefly the members that she had brought with her. Orun and Neji were already known with each other. Tomiko Hyuuga was send to the team and despite Aiko's silent doubts, she wouldn't keep the Hyuuga alone in Ardara.
The reason why she had rounded up the three in the hour of the wolf, only to move them outside of the city was for what one only could describe as a hunt. An actual manhunt.
Of course, the local forces could easily attend to this matter. If it weren't for the troubles and pressure that the Allthing carried with its assemblance.
Turning towards the three, Aiko placed her hands on her hips as she began the more detailed briefing.
"We have seven targets. All who commited the heinous crime of breaking the peace and murdering." Aiko told as she paused. There was no reason to inform them about the political matter and weight that came with it. The less they knew, the better.
"They are armed and somewhat capable. I have no idea if they will fight back or not. Three of them are aquadate ninjutsu users. The others are similar to one can expect from a hired retainer of decent quality."
Once more, Aiko enlisted a pause to let her words sink in.
"The rules of engagement are pretty simple. The targets are to the north or were spotted last time in that direction. We aim to kill. Not to capture or interrogate. Only to kill." Aiko moved her gaze over them, lingering for a moment to make stern eye contact. "The terrain is mostly fields and what not. Only bystanders might be cattle and wild critters. If our targets do move into the woods, we might be a bit more on guard. Only aim to take down the seven targets. Do not engage anybody that seems local unless you desire to be demanded to be lynched."
Waiting, again, Aiko patiently awaited if there were any questions. Subtly, she threw a glance at Orun.
Orun considered the situation briefly as Aiko laid it out for them. Seven hostiles, and all needed to be killed. No quarter was to be given. It did not entirely make sense, after all they were shinobi, if they needed someone to act as executioner they would just send out some men after the Allthing, even if there were a band of killers on the loose. Not only that, but typically, murderers would be brought back for trial and to face the noose if at all possible, but if his face showed his doubts, he did not voice them. "Very well, Tireo can take to the skies to search for the men, we'll follow on horseback. If anyone needs to be informed that a dragon will be flying overhead, I would appreciate it being taken care of as quickly as possible." He folded his arms. "Do we have descriptions? Are they expected to be on foot or on horseback?"
Neji would listen as Aiko sensei would explain what their mission was, at this early hour in the morning, they were being tasked with killing seven people whp were wanted for murder. This mission seemed a bit strange to Neji, usually in operations like this they would be tasked with trying to capture these individuals and if they couldn't be captured then they could be killed, this mission though was just to kill them from the start. Neji though wasn't going to question the mission, that was not his job, his job was to follow his orders. Aiko would give a description of the landscape and would let them know that they were last seen to the north. " Is there any possibility that they may have some outside help or support from any of the locals who live out here? Or from anyone at all?"
Tomiko was silent while listening to Aiko's explanation of their mission. Seven people, wanted dead for murder. They were tasked with the mission, and for a moment the small girl wondered why the mission was specifically to kill, instead of attempting any sort of capture on the murderers. However, she quickly pushed these thoughts aside, as she doubted these murderers spared much of a thought for their victim. She looked between the others present at this early hour. Somebody she didn't quite know yet, and Neji Uchiha. The man she did not know beat her to asking a question about details on who they were tasked to take out, and the genin wondered if she should volunteer her byakugan. When she heard the man mention something about a dragon taking to the skies, she silenced her suggestion but looked at him for a long couple of seconds. Was he from the Hyuzu? She seemed to remember that they had something to do with dragons. Did he know Hayate? These questions sparked across her mind before she pushed them to the side for the moment in time to hear the end of Neji's questions, and shook her head briefly to indicate no questions from her end.
Aiko twisted her head slightly to look at Orun, as she would respond to his questions. "Most likely on foot. Easier to remove tracks. They were last seen wearing some gambesons and rugged leather. Nothing too strange. Carrying weapons as well, but I hope you lot already assume that. Most easiest way to track them is by see if they are anxious or portray any hints of wanting to get going."
The question of Neji caused Aiko to glance at the Uchiha. A second of silence went prior the jounin's answer.
"Who knows." The cryptic answer was given with an even tone. She could understand curiosity but answering all the questions with full details wasn't desired. Seeing that no questions came from Tomiko, Aiko would subtly gesture to Orun.
"As I said, Orun takes the reins over for this hunt. I am just going to observe and if you guys do mess up, see what I can do to prevent further damage." Now more clearly, Aiko nodded towards Orun.
Orun folded his arms. "The plan remains the same. I'll send up Tireo on the search for the men. We'll move in a team of three in the meantime, and we'll perform a ground search along the way. Tireo will notify me if he finds anyone, and then we'll head towards that area. Any questions?" He wasn't sure of the abilities of Tomiko, and Neji certainly was not ready to head out on his own without backup from a more experienced shinobi. It'd be safer for the whole group if they stuck together. As he waited for an answer, he'd look between the two younger team members.
Neji looked over at Aiko sensei as she answered Orun's question first, it would make sense for them to be on foot, which also meant that they probably haven't gotten very far, so the squad should be able to catch up with them. Aiko then turned her attention to Neji's question. She wasn't sure if they would have any outside help, that could be a possiblity, or they could be all on their own. Regardless they had their mission and they had to complete it. Neji then turned his attention over to Tomiko Hyuuga, a familiar face from other missions, she didn't have any questions for Aiko though, with that she turned over lead of the mission to Orun's hands. This would be his first time leading their squad in a mission. So far with the interactions Neji has had with him, he seemed to be capable, but now he would really see what Orun would do while in charge."What will our formation be like? Are we splitting up to cover more ground?"
Tomiko remained silent for a moment before looking up towards Orun as a thought occurred. "Wouldn't it be better to use my Byakugan? A dragon might upset locals or their animals, and give our enemy warning. But my Byakugan should be able to find them all unless they can hide their chakra." Tomiko said softly, thinking about how it might easier to not give their opponents a giant flag waving overhead and saying that they were coming.
The jounin remained silent. Subtly and silently, she took a step backwards which would likely bring all focus on Orun. Observing the dynamic that started to form as Orun started to give orders, she was happy that he didn't start by throwing any look towards her. If anything, she would now just take the role as observer and practically following the mission as somebody that wasn't 'there'.
Then both Neji and Tomiko would raise their questions on how they wanted to operate the mission. It was somewhat interesting that the two once were part of Team 9. Perhaps the less strict attitude gave way that both genin felt more free to question their superiors? Somewhat curious and amused, she would start making mental notes for later. For now, it was all just up to Orun.
Orun looked away from neji to focus on Tomiko for a moment, not really sure if the girl had met a dragon before. If she had, she clearly thought they were easily distinguished from a bird at high altitudes, or that the local wildlife would notify the criminals. He'd be very surprised if the seven quarries actually knew what a dragon looked like. "There's no need to worry about Tireo upsetting the locals or notifying the enemy. He's done this with me for a long time now, longer then you at the least. I'd advise you not to underestimate a dragon, unless you like burnt trousers that is." The tone of his voice made it sound as if he had expected Tomiko to know that. "Your Byakugan will do very little good if we don't within range of them." He turned his attention to Neji. "As I said, we will operate together. You two will stick close to me, and follow my orders exactly. Neither of you will do any good if you get separated and lost." he turned his head towards Aiko. "Is it going to cause any trouble if I summon Tireo here?"
Neji would listen to Tomiko as she brought up a question about Orun's dragon and if it would not be better to use her byakugan. Neji did not know much about dragons so he had no opinion on the matter. Everything Orun said made sense though. Then he moved his attention to Neji's question and said that they will all stick together, as much As Neji wanted to be able to test his skills on his own, he understood why they were staying together. "Right understood," Neji would nod his head.
If there was no worry about the dragon spooking any of the locals, why had the man asked about notifying people at the beginning of the briefing? Wouldn't it not be an issue as they wouldn't be able to tell the difference? Studying this Hyuzu, she could tell from his voice that he had expected Tomiko to know details about dragons. Which struck as a bit odd since most others didn't have many dealings with the creatures. Still, she simply nodded in response to the man's orders. Though she still felt that the Byakugan would prove to be quite useful in this mission, the girl didn't argue the point any futher, remaining quiet to follow orders.
The start wasn't perhaps the best as it became clear that the lower ranked on the team didn't seem keen on just following orders of Orun. There was the thought and temptation to make them 'motivated', for whereas Taika usually had more filial piety for their superiors than either Yakimara or Chonobi, it sure didn't seem to be the case with Neji and Tomiko. Which was both amusing and already causing Aiko to mentally sigh.
When Orun asked the question, Aiko threw a glance at the nearby gates and walls. There was some distance between them. Not to mention, not a lot of people were on and about outside the walls of Ardara - at least, where they were.
"Go for it." Aiko said, nodding to emphasize her answer.
Taking a step back, she would cross her arms out in front of her chest. Once more, she would just take the role of observing how each would operate and behave.
Orun grinned, it was the best news he had heard all day from Aiko. He strode a short distance away, around three or four meters. Orun did not take but a moment to form the seals, boar, dog, bird, monkey, ram, then he bit his thumb, careful to draw a small amount of blood as an offering to the contract. Then the summon was complete as Tireo appeared, a bit of chakra sacrificed to the dragon as well. He stood proud and magnificent, his scales were black as obsidian, gleaming dully in the sunlight, and his eyes seemed to glow like blue fire. Large, razor sharp talons tipped his toes, and his bat like wings were folded carefully against his back. Tireo yawned and stretched sort of like a horse sized cat, his gaze moved from Orun, to Aiko, to Tomiko, to Neji. Then to Orun came the familiar feeling of the mental brush of the dragon. Something large and powerful and wise beyond its years, but gentle and kind in touch and feeling. "You have not visited in a while little one." Came the gruff voice through the telepathic link. "What is it that you need?" Orun wasted no time in catching the dragon up to speed, who then shifted his head to Tomiko and Neji. He studied them with a keen gaze, and Orun spoke up as he returned to the small gathering. "Tireo is going to make contact with each of you." Orun said as he looked to Tomiko and Neji. "Telepathically, that is. Do not be alarmed. It is for easier communication, his voice is rougher than most would enjoy hearing. After you greet with him we will move out." The dragon would brush up against the minds of the pair as Orun finished talking, inviting them to speak and introduce themselves.
Tomiko watched quietly as the man went through his seals, and judging by the bit of blood he produced he was in fact performing the summoning technique. Though when the creature he was summoning appeared, the girl's eyes went wide and a small curse could be heard slipping from her mouth. That was an actual dragon standing before her. The Hyuuga, while she knew Hyuzu were associated with dragons, was completely caught off guard by the sight of one. She stood there in a stunned sort of silence, offering only a small nod as response to Orun warning them about the impending contact. When she felt the brush against her mind, a small noise of surprise could be heard before she looked at the dragon.
H-hi. I'm Tomiko Hyuuga. You're an actual dragon, this is so weird. I've never seen one before and w-. Dear Tian, I'm rambling I'm sorry. She said as a greeting to the dragon, her face flushing in embarrassment as she realized she was rambling on.
Watching from the side, Aiko features didn't hint to what she was thinking. In truth, she hadn't seen much of the beasts that people considered the stuff of legends. She could remember that Hayate had a dragon but this one seemed different. The fact that the cold-blooded beast could communicate through telepathy was from an objective standpoint a plus. Personally though? Aiko disliked that the creature could do that. However, the beast didn't intrude her thoughts with his presence, so she would stay silent and observe how the genin reacted back.
"I believe it is a good time to head off now." Aiko stated politely, sending a subtle look towards Orun. Understanding that the Hyuzu and genin would perhaps like more time with the dragon, they could indulge into such activity after they had completed their objective.
Neji would watch as Orun would move away from the group, then he would start forming hand signs and would bite his thumb to gather a bit of blood. Neji knew right then and there that Orun was performing a summoning. A puff of smoke formed and then all of a sudden a dragon stood before the group. Neji's mouth hung open a little bit, he had never seen a dragon before. The view was incredible, the beast stood proud and tall as it would look between the members of the group. Orun then said that Tireo could speak to them telepathically and that they must introduce themselves to him. Neji was a bit nervous but would talk to the dragon. " Hello Tireo, my name is Neji Uchiha, I look forward to working with you." Neji would shift his focus to Aiko sensei as she said it was time for them to move out and get the mission started.
Summary:
Asvaldr's group and Kuni make their way throughout the Blackroot Forest. While travelling within, they encounter more dangers.
The travel through the Blackroot Vale was getting exhausting. The constant tension and keeping one's guard up was starting to wear down. The group seemed less eager to converse and it became more apparent that the group was feeling far from secure. It certainly didn't help that there was no sign or landmark that helped to navigate how far they still had to travel.
Then a fear started to fester. It was faint but yet tangible enough in the air that some wanted to take another approach. Some suggested to try to approach or communicate with the Blackroots but that idea wasn't approved by Asvaldr and what seemed to be the more experienced members of the group. Others suggested to travel through the Void in order to make more distance but the mere mentioning of what lurked in the Blackroot and somewhat hard to predictability of the Void shot that idea down.
Causing the group to venture in a slow but almost constant pace through the woodlands. The tranquility that seemed to reside was only disturbed now and then by sounds in the distant. Howling pierced through the air, roars caused the group to come to an acute halt and more audible evidence that they were forced to be ever cautious.
The tension and fear started to slip away as a noticeable change occurred. The dense woodland started to make more space. A sign that seemed that they were perhaps getting to the other side of the notorious dangerous woodland.
A break would be held as morale seemed to increase, despite the last roar in the distance being merely fifteen minutes ago.
It was Brynjar who had the duty to watch over Kuni and the rather tall, young man seemed most happy about the apparent change in their situation.
When the dense woods made way to more space, Kuni couldn't help but feel more relieved. If they were out of the Blackroot woods, then it would mean that the wildlife should at least be a bit easier to handle. At least, for the rest of them. She did for a moment put a hand on the chakra blocker, thinking about asking if they could remove it now, but she decided against it. Until she was with Aiko, there was a risk of being intercepted by anyone, if her chakra signature was suddenly exposed.
Upon stopping, Kuni moved to lean against a tree and just looked up at the sky. It felt like they had become much brighter now "Feels good to be out of there. Like the entire atmosphere in there was heavier, and now I can be as light as a feather." She said, not really minding if Brynjar talked back or not. She was just happy to express how she felt.
Chewing on a bite of stale bread, Brynjar threw a glance at Kuni. Clearing his mouth, Brynjar nodded slowly. "I suppose so. But it is sad that we couldn't have had a chance against one of those hulking monsters. I would have been willing to see how well they live up to the rumours. If a pack of direwolves can tear them apart, why wouldn't we be able?" He speculated loudly, only to shrug lightly later. "But I will be happy to be done with this escorting mission. I rather be active in another way than some glorified babysitter," he bluntly stated afterwards.
"More like a glorified Jinchuuriki-sitter. And while I have been enjoying this long trek, getting to know a bit more about your culture, I wouldn't mind reaching our destination either. Especially if I am right with my hunch on who it is that is waiting for me there." Kuni said, offering a smile "And I'm sure you and the group would've taken on one of those without shedding a drop of blood." She added.
"Or that," Brynjar mumbled when Kuni 'corrected' him. Briefly he seemed to consider a part of her response before he spoke back up. "You state that you have a hunch on who is waiting for you. But how are you so sure it is that person?" Brynjar asked, his eyebrows slightly perking up.
"I'm pretty sure. It was both something Asmund told me, along with something he gave me that makes me quite sure of it." was the response. Kuni then took out the silver necklace from underneath her shirt, looked at it for a brief moment, before hiding it underneath her shirt again "Pretty pretty sure." She then repeated, sounding a bit more confident than before.
"Would might suck for you if we are actually Zealots. Then you basically decided to walk with those who want your skin flayed and what not weird things they have in mind," Brynjar noted as he unleashed a snort, "But I suppose that it is handy to have a jinchuriki under one's influence." He continued as he seemed to consider something.
However, before Brynjar or Kuni could continue their conversation, a particular sound pierced through the air. It seemed to make everybody freeze as the relaxation ebbed away fast. Suddenly shouts in Chonobi resonated in the air as the group quickly grabbed whatever essentials they had with them and started to run. Brynjar cursed loudly as he would get up and reach for his bag.
"Run! Go!" He urged Kuni, though it was clear that they were supposed to get moving fast. Certainly when some loud growling started to get closer.
The sudden change in the atmosphere and Brynjar's urging her made it beyond clear that something became very wrong, very quick. The growling that was accompanied by it only verified that something bad was headed their way. Without needing to hear it again, Kuni moved from the tree and started to follow in the tracks of others from the group, pushing herself to keep up with the rest as they ran from the source of the growling.
Louder sounds started to resonate from behind, as if the earth was attempting to swallow them whole with tree, snow, rock and dirt along. Various shouts in Chonobi briefly pierce or faintly became audible and a clear pattern became visible as the group started to adopt a formation. A few joined Kuni and stayed close, almost like guiding her where they wanted her to run as others started to fan out.
This almost unnatural chase seemed to proceed for a minute before the violent sound started to ebb away, yet the small group continued to run. Some started to shout and it was likely Asvaldr that shouted instructions or answers back to their questions. After some time, the pace was lowered with a single verbal command of Asvaldr that caused the group to come to a slow halt. Many panted and threw wary looks around them.
The few that had been either instructed or decided to stick close with Kuni would remain close to her. Their body language betrayed enough - their hands at the ready to draw their weapons or conjure a technique. As peace seemed to return, panic then started to surface again. Some started to shout in their language together with adding the name 'Dagmar'. Almost frantically did the group turn towards each other, hoping that one or another knew an answer to the question that involved Dagmar.
They ran. And ran. It felt like they were running for some time to Kuni. At some point, the growling sounds ceased, but they kept on running. When they finally came to a halt, Kuni stumbled and landed on her face due to how it felt so sudden to her. After standing up and making sure she was fine, she started to notice everyone around her was still very much alert and at the ready. Which made sense to her.
But before she could start taking deeper breaths, she heard everyone around her speak in Chonobi. Although she didn't understand it, there was one name that she did know. Dagmar. The way they were panicking and calling out her name made it pretty obvious something was amiss. Kuni started looking around as well, and began calling out for Dagmar herself. Even if it was just the name. Eventually, she turned to look at Asvaldr, hoping to see some kind of sign that would indicate he knew where Dagmar was.
Instead of revelation, it became clear that nobody was sure where Dagmar was. A sharp whistle caused the group to become silent as Asvaldr spoke with a sharp tone. Addressing his fellow Cho guard, they would resume their formation with a few exceptions. Appointing Brynjar and three others, the group would start to move while the others returned back to where they had been chased. Once more, Asvaldr took the duty to watch over Kuni closely while instructing his group to keep moving forward.
"Dagmar. She isn't here, is she?" Kuni asked quietly. She didn't need an answer, as Asvaldr's actions made it clear this was the case "Damnit, damnit, damnit. I wish this escort would be over already. I don't want more people to lose their lives because of me." she whispered, clearly upset that another person was now gone due to this.
Asvaldr didn't respond right away, throwing a look at Kuni before looking at the way ahead of them. Trudging through the snow with the rest, Asvaldr would respond back. His voice rather calm despite the situation.
"No, she isn't. She may not be alive when Brynjar finds her. Might be beyond saving. And then we got to move on." He said with a manner of fact fashion before continuing, "She didn't die because of you. She died for heeding the command that we would escort you. You aren't a deciding factor. For all I know and care, you caused nothing that directly impacted her." Asvaldr shot a look at her again. "So beat yourself up when you are out of our care. Not yet while we may be facing another trouble."
Turning quiet, Kuni simply nodded. But in her head, she thought of the fact that Dagmar wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for the mission to escort her. But instead of saying anything further, she decided to just follow what Asvaldr had told her. There was no use in beating herself up in the company of someone who didn't care.
The group continued till the light of the sun started to settle. Whereas the group had been worrying about their tracks and poured some effort before to erase most of their tracks, they now didn't seem to care. Establishing themselves on a large hill, they could overview some of the area. And spotting that ahead they would be faced with going through dense vegetation again.
Morale wasn't quite high but everybody seemed okay with focusing on their tasks. Then a sentry whistled, heralding that something or somebody was approaching. Seeing that not another whistle and shout followed, it became quickly clear who was approaching. Brynjar and his group returned. Their shoulders were hanging low as they seemed quite disappointed. The mud and snow covered more of their clothing, evidence that they had gone through great effort to try to recover Dagmar.
The silent message that Brynjar and three others gave with returning caused some of the group to stay silent while supper was shared - cold as Asvaldr rather didn't wish to attract anything or anybody with making a fire.
Any hope Kuni had dissolved upon seeing Brynjar return with his small group, but without Dagmar. Another person was lost, though this time to nature. Finally, it was time for supper, which was given without any heat. She chewed slowly, not feeling the flavour of the food, if it was even supposed to have any. After a bit, she put the remaining away, brought her head to her knees and hugged her legs with her hands. Without anyone seeing her lips, she started to whisper.
"Dagmar. Should I ever get to Audhild's Mark, I will do my best to honour you. I hope that you won't end up roaming the world as a boggart, and that your spirit may find peace with your parents."
Once she was done, Kuni rose her head from her knees, although she suddenly realized that her cheeks were wet. It seemed as though she had began to cry as she said those words, and quickly moved to wipe the tears away.
The next morning came. No disturbances seemed to haunt the group in the evening. The group were doing their tasks but a clear sign of defeat became visible. The whole fact that they were aware on what difficult task still laid ahead of them was weighing heavily. Asvaldr would head towards Kuni with some rations. Closing in the distance, he held some stale bread and cheese towards Kuni.
"We are going to reduce rations. To make sure that we still have some over a few days." He told her, his voice contrasting his tired body language. "If you desire to meditate, then I advise you to do so sparsely. We might not be entirely safe yet."
Accepting the rations in silence, Kuni simply shook her head, indicating she didn't desire to meditate at all. With barely any appetite, she ate a bit of bread and cheese, before wrapping up what remained and pocketing it. If they were going to reduce how much each got, then perhaps conserving some food for when she actually felt hungry would be better. Not to mention, she felt if she tried to force any more, she would just throw up. And she doubted they would appreciate if she started appearing sick now.
Asvaldr stared down at Kuni for a moment longer. Then without any word, he turned around and shouted some instructions. The group simply packed and got into formation. Brynjar was once more assigned to oversee and stay close to Kuni. But even the usual cheerful and talkative Brynjar was silent as the group started to move. Moving through the snow, there was little that reminded them of the possible life around them. Silence awaited them as they continued to traverse through the area.
As weary as the group appeared, they were still wary. A hour passed while the group walked on. Then one of the group whistled, causing everybody to halt. Tension quickly returned as Brynjar mumbled something to Kuni. "Follow my lead if something happens." He instructed her.
If paying close attention, one would hear the soft beating. Then it dawned on to the group as some glanced up to the sky. One of the group shouted something but she would be too late as the claws gripped her by the left shoulder. Claws digging through cloth, flesh and blood as the cold blooded hunter let out a victorious screech. Beating its wings, the large winged wyvern attempted to drag its prey away from the group. More beatings of wings resonated as Asvaldr gave orders.
"Now!" Brynjar grumbled as he sprinted forwards, leading Kuni away from the struggle that started between the Cho group and a pair of large wyverns. Vaulting over a fallen tree, Brynjar kept running and leading Kuni further away from the danger.
After seeing Asvaldr throw instructions, and Brynjar came by, Kuni simply followed him. With her mood being low since the loss of Dagmar the previous day, she had little desire to make any kind of talk. The silence seemed to accompany them all as they traveled, until a whistle came from one of them. Brynjar quickly gave Kuni his own instruction, which turned her expression into a more wary one.
Not long passed, and Kuni saw several of them turn their attention to the sky. One of them shouted, but to the Jinchuuriki's horror, she was quickly grabbed by the creature that came down, using incredibly sharp looking claws. While she wanted to help, Brynjar instructed her to follow him earlier, and now he began sprinting away. Without much doubt on what she should do, Kuni started to make haste to catch up to Brynjar, making sure to keep him in her sights the best she could.
Making some more distance, Brynjar led Kuni towards some bushes. Urging her to move behind the bushes, they had limited view on what happened with the others. Violent sounds mixed together with the screeching reptiles. Keeping himself low, Brynjar had a long knife drawn and held in an ice-pick grip. The sounds of violence seemed to dim for a moment. Only to be raised as shouts pierced through the air a moment later.
"Fuck, another boggart," Brynjar cursed as he translated what was being shouted. It was clear that he wanted to move back but it seemed he held himself back from leaving Kuni alone. He glanced around to see if there was any threat or a way to make a difference in the situation. Saying something underneath his breath in Chonobi, Brynjar glanced back at the direction they came from. The sounds of a fight became more intense.
Moving to hide behind the bushes as instructed, Kuni hoped the situation would improve soon. And briefly, it sounded like it did, only to apparently turn for the worse, as Brynjar quickly translated the shouts as another boggart showing up. This was turning bad. She could tell Brynjar wanted to help, but didn't want to leave her alone her. And she wasn't sure if she could handle herself if a danger were to show up, considering her chakra was blocked, and she didn't have any kind of weapons, except for her shinobi tools. But how much good would those be against a pack of wolves, a flying menace, or a boggart?
"I know I'm under your watch, but perhaps you could help me climb a tree and I'll hide among the branches, in silence, while you go help the group? You'll know where I am afterwards. I have no intention of wandering around with the chakra blocker, no knowledge of the area, and a lot of dangers that could potentially find me if I stay on the ground. Or, potentially, if you can quickly come up with a strategy that involves my shinobi tools, I could serve as a tool to you and the group." Kuni whispered to him, hoping he'll pick either one, because right now they were basically both staying in the spot like it would actually matter to the creatures of the forest where they stood.
"No," Brynjar instantly replied back. "Orders are orders." He said, gritting his teeth but yet able to make his words audible enough for Kuni to understand what he was saying. Wanting to say something, the two would hear something rushing towards them. The ground slightly shook as a low grumbling started to become louder. In a response, Brynjar swiftly moved to stand between Kuni and what was about to charge them.
The few trees were slammed aside as a hulking beast of a boggart came straight at them. In sharp contrast this one wasn't whimpering or seeming to look desperate. Its small eyes were focused on Kuni with what could be described as the sight of an insane being, hellbent on getting what it had its sights on.
Brynar would draw his other weapon as he refused to move out of the way, only a battleroar escaping his throat as he seemed to brace himself to stop the much larger threat with his own body.
The collision would produce a sickening sound of flesh being penetrated and blood spurting out of a wound. Grunting, Brynjar would push as he could while his weapons managed to somewhat penetrate the thick hide of the beast. Pushing his weight and strength, he was starting to be pushed back fast while the boggart reached a hand towards Kuni. It already opened its jaws while saliva started to move down its horrendous lips, the yellow teeth bringing forth a terrible stench.
The stubbornness of Brynjar, the way the boggart suddenly headed towards them, and then the clash of the two would've made for a spectacular view, if it weren't for the fact that both Brynjar and Kuni's lives were at stake here. Trying to think fast for anything, she had a huge urge to just start to run, but knowing how others were putting their lives on the line right now, she felt like running would be the wrong move.
She took out of her shinobi kit a pair of shuriken and some string. Although the tags she had were basically useless, since she couldn't activate them, perhaps she could attempt something else. Seeing the reached out hand of the beast, she tied the two shuriken with the string in between, then threw them towards the beast's hand, trying to have one hit the hand, and the other hit the ground, to potentially serve as a slight anchor. She knew it was a long-shot at being effective, but perhaps if she could give Brynjar a second of relief, it would be worth it.
The shuriken managed to hits its mark and for a mere second seemed to have some effect. Only for the wire to snap as the boggart easily pushed through. Its hand was about to snatch Kuni in a crushing grip. Only for a shockwave to occur and beginning to push the boggart back. A scream originated from Brynjar who started to pour more of his strength and chakra into his defense. It was enough to surprise the boggart and causing it to lose some balance as sight of Kuni. Its gaze quickly traveled and seemed to finally notice Brynjar. Though the latter valiantly attempted to keep pushing, it was clear he was reaching his limits.
The hulking beast almost carelessly grabbed the young man. The grip was crushing enough to cause Brynjar to scream as a sickening sound of something cracking faintly resonate through the air.
"Brynjar!" Kuni shouted, standing up and taking out a few kunai from her pouch as she did. What did she know about the boggarts? They sensed chakra. The reason the boggart came after her at first. They appeared to be rather dumb and willing to fight until the end. Not good. They were supposedly lost souls. Not helpful.
Without any other choice, Kuni threw a pair of kunai, aiming to hit the creature's eyes, before following with another pair of kunai being thrown toward what appeared to be its nostrils. All she needed was a distraction. Something to cause the boggart to let go of Brynjar. And if she could the boggart's attention again, well.
She'll figure something out.
The large beast seemed to observe the struggling of Brynjar. The open jaws seemed to grow into a sinister smirk as it exerted more pressure. Causing Brynjar to yell out in pain and his arms growing limp. Still the young man attempted to struggle back, evident by the weird spastic movement of his legs and him spitting towards the creature.
The jaws of the boggart seemed to widen as it wanted to take a bite of its new catch. Only for a bloodcurling roar to escape the monster's throat. Blood spurted out where its left eye was, the sharp kunai piercing it with ease as it wasn't protected by a thick skin. Instead of letting Brynjar go, the beast covered its face with its free hand and started to trash around.
The speed of which it moved and without Kuni not able to mould chakra, it was impossible for her to escape as the monster kept wildly swinging and moving around.
Two knives would come from the right and seem to pass Kuni, only to suddenly be manipulated and wrapping some wire around Kuni. Before the boggart could smack or trample Kuni in its blinded anger, the jinchuriki would be pulled back and briefly dragged through the snow.
"Move," a voice pierced through as a figure drew two more knives while taking a stance between Kuni and the boggart.
The sudden pull from behind caught Kuni by surprise, and she watched as the boggart's flailing arm suddenly grew some distance from her. Landing on her rear in the snow, Kuni watched as a figure spoke to her with one word. The voice, however, made her eyes widen. While she wanted to say so much, she understood in this case, she was indeed a hindrance. Standing up, she looked around, before moving back and hiding behind some bushes once more. Just as Dagmar showed up, she hoped that the rest of the group were in relatively good shape, and also hoped that Brynjar wouldn't die.
The smaller girl would seem rather calm. Despite the rugged and dirty garb, the Vaugnir Cho took aim before she would throw her knives at the beast. The result was rather stunning as despite the large creature's trashing, one knife penetrated the remaining eye and the other slammed into the beast's hand in which it still tightly gripped Brynjar. Bringing her hands together to form a seal, Dagmar grunted.
An explosion followed with a shockwave rippling through the air. Blood together with pieces of hide and flesh flew through the air before landing as debris from Dagmar's attack on the snow around Kuni and Dagmar. The beast screeched as it shook his slight injured hand. The damage at its face was far worse as the explosion had tore through, severing chunks of hide while burning the surrounding flesh.
Inhaling, Dagmar would whip out two more knives that seemed to fly out of the girl's sleeve. "Be ready, jinchuriki," Dagmar said with a calm tone as she once more took aim. This time she would aim for the fallen Brynjar as the boggart started to trash around once more.
The knives would sink into the snow as wire wrapped around the young man's body before pulling it back towards Dagmar, who pulled with all of her strength to move her comrade out of harm's way.
"Now, help me get him away!" She yelled as she would quickly move towards Brynjar's body to drag it further away from the boggart.
Seeing Dagmar blow up the boggart's hand was impressive, but she also got scared for Brynjar, as he was practically at the heart of the explosion. When Dagmar spoke to her again, Kuni briefly wondered what she would need to do. Upon seeing her pull him over with a pair of knives, just as Dagmar did with her, Kuni understood what will need to be done. Without waiting for the Cho Guard to finish, she ran out of the bushes and grabbed a hold of Brynjar, before beginning to help Dagmar move him away as fast as she could. She thanked what strength she had thanks to training with the earth fist technique, as Brynjar was certainly not a light man.
Dragging with Kuni, Dagmar pulled Brynjar away from harm's way. Before they could really get far, it seemed that the boggart was catching up on what happened. It unleashed a loud roar, turning towards their direction. The creature wanted to move forward. Only for the ground to tremble.
Having let go of Brynjar, Dagmar weaved handseals as if her life depended on it - which it actually did. Slamming her hands through the snow to make contact with the ground, walls started to rise around the boggart - reaching half of its size but appearing to be quite thick.
"Keep going!" Dagmar shouted at Kuni, her body trembling as she attempted to keep the boggart trapped. Yet it became clear that the boggart was resisting heavily and pushing back against the earthen walls.
As Dagmar let go of Brynjar, Kuni momentarily stumbled due to the sudden shift in weight going to the side. But as she watched what Dagmar elected to do, Kuni just watched in awe. She certainly needed to train her earth techniques more. Upon hearing Dagmar tell her to keep going, Kuni realized that carrying Brynjar in the same manner as before would only slow her down. Grabbing his arm, she pulled it as much as she could, pulling his legs from the ground. Grabbing both his feet with her right arm, she moved to lean them on her shoulder.
Brynjar was still feeling heavy, but at least this felt more even to her. She briefly wanted to turn back and look at Dagmar, but knowing she was ordered to run away, Kuni began walking, trying to increase her speed as much as she could while carrying Brynjar this way. If she was carrying someone more towards her weight, it would've been simpler, but this was the situation, and she had to deal with it. So she kept walking as fast as she could, to try and make as much headway as she could, while also sticking to walking in a single direction. She figured that if she stuck to one direction, it would be easier for them to find her afterwards.
Violent sounds of something breaking resonated through the air, followed by a loud roar from the boggart. Various sounds started to mix in as shouts of Chonobi pierced and flowed into the turbulent mixture.
Within a dozen of seconds, Kuni was also caught up by two Cho Guards. The two brought her to halt quickly. One, that was larger and seemingly appearing to have a stronger physical build would take over Brynjar while the second, though shorter in stature, would keep Kuni from running and performing a quick check.
From the direction of where Dagmar was, the violence continued and slowly ebbed away.
A minute passed before some others would join Brynjar, Kuni and the other two Cho Guards. Some had blood on their garbs, the unusual dark blood giving them a more intimidating look. Asvaldr's voice could be detected as the young man spurred out orders and instructions to his people.
Eventually, the young man joined up with those that were near Kuni. "You're alive, good," he stated, his tone even. Briefly, he threw a glance at Brynjar before back at Kuni. Saying something in Chonobi, he would get an answer from the one that had done a quick search on Kuni - to likely survey if she was injured or not. At the end of the answer, Asvaldr slowly inhaled and exhaled. Saying something, a bit more hushed, two would move to Brynjar and carry him away.
"You aren't hurt, hm?"
The sudden stop that came at the hands of the two Cho Guards caught Kuni by surprise, but she also relieved. Being alone at this situation, and with an injured person, certainly felt worrisome. One of them took Brynjar away from her, while the second looked her over. All the while, the sounds from the distance of fighting slowly faded away, before finally some others came to join them.
Hearing Asvaldr's voice made her feel slightly calmer. As he stated what was obvious, as Kuni was standing in front of him, she looked towards the direction the sounds previously came from. She was, yes, but what about Dagmar? As Advaldr asked her his question, Kuni turned back and shrugged "I don't feel injured, but I'm also experiencing a surge of adrenaline right now. I know that can overcome bits of pain. I was tossed before by Dagmar's technique, so it's possible I'm slightly bruised. But I don't feel anything serious." She said, before looking in the same direction as before once again.
"Dagmar told me to carry Brynjar away. Is she okay? And will Brynjar be okay?" Kuni turned to look at Asvaldr again, clearly worried for both of them.
He just nodded as she stated on how she was doing. The questions didn't gain any immediate replies from Asvaldr. He simply raised a hand to rub his chin for a moment, likely pondering on if he should answer or how to answer the questions.
"Dagmar suffered chakra burning. The symptom that occurs when one uses too much chakra in a little space of time. Likely will recover from it without any permanent damage. Brynjar?" Asvaldr paused as he lowered his hand, his voice being even. "No idea. He might need to leave for the afterlife with a bit of help."
While briefly relieved to hear that Dagmar will recover, Kuni covered her mouth with her hands upon hearing the response regarding Brynjar. She knew that sometimes mercy killing was the right move, but she had never heard anyone actually consider it. At least, not anyone she knew. After blinking a few times and sniffing, she lowered her hands "H-How far are we from the nearest settlement? Perhaps, if it's not too far, or off the track, a couple of the group could go with Brynjar over there to try and seek medical help."
As she spoke, her voice was slightly cracking "Or perhaps, if our destination is close, we could make it there before any big choices like that will need to be taken. Or, or.." Kuni lowered her head, unable to think of anything else. She kept sniffing her nose, and doing her best to fight the tears she felt were trying to come forward. Asvaldr already told her before to cry at her own time. She needed to show him she was going to respect what he told her.
A couple of moments later, she raised her sight to meet Asvaldr's again "I'm sorry. I remember what you said earlier." Kuni told him, before putting on the most serious face she could "What is our next step in this situation?" She asked.
Asvaldr would Kuni just say what she had on her mind. His right eyebrow slightly perked up but it was hard to say if he was irritated or surprised by what Kuni said. Letting a second of silence echo after her words, he spoke up. "No clue. Besides, our orders are clear. We are to avoid settlements. And we won't let the mission get jeopardized on emotions," though spoken calmly, there was some underlying threat in the phrasing. Asvaldr would briefly shot a glance at those who were nearby. Stating something in Chonobi, a rather short sentence, Asvaldr turned his attention on Kuni again.
"We rest for the moment. You stay here." He simply said, before walking away to where Brynjar had been taken. The few Cho Guards that were in clear sight around Kuni seemed most wary, some still having their weapons out as they both watched the surrounding as the jinchuriki.
Time slowly passed by and not too far could one spot a small pillar of smoke rising above the nearby canopy of the part of woodlands that they had left behind them. Others soon rejoined with the group, two providing some support for Dagmar. No sign of Brynjar, however.
A command of Asvaldr would be given as the group would once more move into motion. Continuing their trek, trudging through the snow as they did, the group was silent. In a different way than they had been before. There seemed to be no break as the sky started to darken and none of the Cho Guard would utter a word, simply continuing to trudge through the snow and venturing further into the woodlands.
Eventually, it would become almost pitch dark. Clouds seemed to try to block the light of the moon and thus force Asvaldr to halt the group. The usual tasks were delegated as the group prepared to make their night camp. One of the Cho Guard would take some time to once more check on Kuni. The person remained silent, making use of gestures to point out how she wanted Kuni to stand or sit. The survey was quickly over and the respective Cho would walk back towards Asvaldr to bring out report.
Without any campfire, the cold could continue to haunt each and single one of them. While most were doing their tasks, Asvaldr would approach Kuni. Holding something in his hands.
"You should use it," he said, though it sounded more like an instruction than suggestion as he presented a folded blanket, "the owner won't need it anymore, anyways."
The silence throughout the trek was different, and Kuni understood well why. Once they were resting, she simply followed the gestures of the Cho Guard that came to inspect her before, and once the guard left, she sat down on the ground. Somehow, the earth she connected to so much felt colder than ever. As Asvaldr approached and offered the blanket, his words struck Kuni. If the owner won't need it, then it only meant one thing.
Taking the blanket from Asvaldr, she nodded in silence, wrapping it around herself tightly. Without speaking a word, she moved to lay on her side. The blanket provided some warmth. As though the heat from the earlier fire was reaching to her through the blanket. The warmness she didn't want to feel, as she knew what it meant, but at the same time, the heat that helped her before, and was now going to fade away. Perhaps this was one way to keep the heat with her.
Watching her for a second, Asvaldr would appear to decide to leave her be. Returning to a few others, he would converse with them briefly in a hushed manner before attempting to find his own rest.
[ The Daimyo Castle | Ranzaki, the capital of the Lightning Country ]
[ Yakamochi of the Tano Clan | New master of arms for the Regency council forces ]
It was quiet. The deep breath before the plunge, he mused to himself. The question was, however, if he was going to deliver that plunge or going to receive it. Walking through the halls, Yakamochi had little interest in the decorations and art that was on display. Neither deemed he servants or anybody along the way of importance, simply heading towards where he was summoned.
Approaching a double door, secured by some elite guards, Yakamochi would be allowed to enter. Walking into a spacious room, he saw a few people around a round table. Noticing that they were in discussion, Yakamochi would place his hands at his back and wait patiently to be spoken to.
"The Fifth Raikage is dead. No likely it will cause some of his subordinates to waver and be more eager to join our sides," a man said as he gestured to the map that was laid out on the round table. " with some good planning and decisive action, we could attempt to slip a force past the current defences. And take out this so-called Sixth Raikage."
The proposal wasn't received that well, much to Yakamochi's amusement. Some argued that they didn't yet have enough forces to concentrate effort on one side, while the Great Clans were all in open rebellion. Another spoke up, stating that they should focus on getting a Great Clan on their side. It seemed like the group wouldn't come to an agreement at this rate.
If anything, Yakamochi didn't like politics. The situation was dire and he understood why he had been summoned to the capital. Currently, all their attacks had been repelled and things weren't looking great for the Regency Council.
"It is why I have summoned Yakamochi of the Tana clan," a feminine voice resonated through the room, belonging to the 'Lady Regent', Aki Chise. The voice and words pulled Yakamochi from his thoughts, causing him to make a bow towards the group - who turned to eye the man. "Yakamochi, please join us."
Nodding, Yakamochi would approach the table as he kept his hands at his back. Ignoring the wary glances of the other men in the room, he flashed a smile to Aki as he made another bow. "I am proud to be of service to the Lord. How may I assist?" He asked, though knowing full well why he had been summoned.
"I would love to hear what you think about the situation. For, I desire to send you and your brothers out to end the resistance that has risen against the true ruler of the Lightning country." The woman gestured to the map of the nation that was placed on the table. "Currently, we have received word that the Sanosuke has defeated and committed barbaric crimes against the honest men that we send north. The Hojo have risen up in rebellion as well, defeating another force. Same with the Alaricus to the south."
"So, my job is to clean this shit show. Great," Yakamochi thought to himself, half amused. He leaned forward, placing his hands on the table as his eyes settled on the map. "How big of a force can we field without weakening our garrisons?" He asked.
"Currently? Around ten thousand troops seem to be loyal to us, that we can rally within a few days." One of the men said, the disappointment clear in his voice. The answer caused Yakamochi to throw a sideways glance at the man, not really finding it a comfortable response.
"I believe that your calculations are quite wrong," another person spoke. Yakamochi threw a look at the man who spoke. It was certainly odd to see a monk attending to a war council. But not in the place to question it, Yakamochi remained silent.
"I already have started negotiations with some clans and can rise our field force more than before. With some generous donations, it won't be too hard to add mercenaries to our pool of manpower. Allowing our total force numbering to a good sixty thousand strong."
Some men grumbled, clearly happy and content. Aki Chise smiled as she would be the first to respond. "That is good! Yakamochi shall take the leadership of this new force and direct it where necessary. In the meanwhile, I shall conduct an attempt to negotiate with the Empire of Akino. Already we have..."
He had questions. Yakamochi merely glanced at the bald man, the monk. Though not a big fan of politics, he had his fair share of experience. Enough to know that it wasn't just likely that one could raise fifty-thousand without some serious connections, renown or wealth. Not eager to find himself to playing a huge part in politics, Yakamochi kept himself silent as he listened further. While they continued to state on how they would attempt to gain the Imperial forces on their side, Yakamochi already started to create his own plans.
While bearing no animosity towards the Great clans or the Sixth Raikage, he would not relent to hit them all hard.
A start of a destiny?
[ Empire of Akino | Sarutobi Heartlands, Ardara | A meeting between Kazumo Sarutobi ( @Oblivion666 ) and Aiko Cho-Hon ( @Lesli ) ]
[ Kazumo and Aiko have a conversation, on what Kazumo has managed to figure out on his given assignment. Aiko then reveals that he should travel to the Island of Rún, where he has to find and contact an oracle. The Voice of Bergjlot, which may reveal Kazumo's destiny for a price that they won't know until revealed. ]
She had taken in the information that Kazumo could provide her. If the young man was observant, he would notice that Aiko wasn't surprised by the revelation that many were in the possible betrayal that had occurred to Sahoru Hon. Several times, Aiko had just nodded and remained silent as Kazumo spoke of what he had discovered.
"Very well done. Seems that you were clearly ready for this task." Aiko began, flashing a warm smile towards her pupil. "Of course, this should be a wise lesson to you. Once you are in a position of leadership, it is hard to trust people. As you might have picked up, people have their own vision and idea on how something should be done. And they don't like to be ignored when they give you advice. Regardless if that advice is given because they are competent, loyal folk. Or if they want to gain something with said advice."
Pausing, Aiko thought about something. "It is often easy in hindsight to condemn or celebrate something. But let us speculate. You were in Sahoru's stead. A leader of a Great clan that is, however, divided between prominent jarls that want to stay important. What would you have done if the Second Hokage had approached you? Would you have listened to the advice of your jarls and thegns? To not work closer with a clan and folk that once was your enemy? Or would you consider the boons and risk being shunned by your own kin and clan for it?"
Reporting back to his sensei on the operation he was given, he wasn't sure how helpful it was yet all information helped in some regard. It wasn't until he was telling her all this that he noticed she wasn't too surprised. Almost as if he expected him to come back with this kind of information. He could see her doing this as some test, after all Koike was her student at one point. Her looking into this for his well being was something he could believe she would do.
She told him he did a good job but then worked what he did into a lesson on leadership. He saw firsthand what some people said and did, what they thought when ignored by their leader. Which he expected but he also didn't expect them to take into consideration that plotted murder would be something they would go right into. Then again to work with what was considered an enemy, it didn't surprise him too much that some of them worked their way to murder right away.
Then she threw another question at him, what would he have done in Sahoru's shoes. Listen to his jarls and thegns or listen to what they considered an enemy. "Thats's….. tough to say. I don't know what they discussed. Yet I suppose the Jarls and Thegns wouldn't really care that much. Honestly I would hear the deal out, but if the Jarls and Thegns made their opinion clear that I shouldn't meet with him. Then I suppose I would keep hidden eyes on them and hear the deal out before making any choice."
"Not too bad," she responded. "It is wise to keep an eye on those with power and have yet sworn to heed your commands." Aiko paused for a moment as she clearly seemed to consider something. "I am going to send you to a place. The island of Rún, to visit the Voice of Bergjlot," the woman would introduce another pause to let her words sink in. "Having faith in a leader can come through many ways. Through skill, history, bloodline and with the favour of the gods."
Aiko turned towards Kazumo, the tone and facial expression of the woman giving away the importance of the topic. "The Voice of Bergjlot can reveal one's destiny. It comes at a price. One that I can't either predict or advice if it is worth it or not. You got to decide that for yourself."
It made sense to have those who claim loyalty be watched after going against what they wished, it's a sad reality but in doing so it could prevent tragedy. It was made clear that all it takes is going against their wishes once to bring your end after all. He wished he could trust his future subjects but he knew he was going to make choices they would never approve of. They were all different minded , so where one approved another greatly disapproved.
His attention was drawn back to his sensei when she stated she was sending him to the island of Rún, a location he knew well as the place she was sending him was to see the voice of Bergjlot. He was never there but he has read about it before. "Yeah…. bit worrying to hear what she might say, as I also know the greater the sacrifice, the more I can know. Although doubt the future wife would appreciate me offering the firstborn. I can figure that part out while I go there though."
A ghost of a smile dawned on Aiko's lips upon hearing Kazumo's response. "I wish that I could help you out with some advice. However, yeah, you got to make that decision yourself." She would continue. "You will be escorted and guided by some selected folk. They will see to it that you shall arrive safely on reaching the oracle. And also safely returning back to me. After all," Aiko would pause for a second, "I will soon be heading southwards. After the Allthing, I will need to mobilise the 11th brigade. And prepare to lead it east. It is possible that we can establish a meeting with the Edani, to arrange a marriage. Securing already one clan in your favour before you even make your move."
Pondering on something else, Aiko frowned slightly. "I have some more plans on my mind. But it should be best to not overextend ourselves. Do you have any questions before I shall arrange your voyage?"
So he does have an escort to the island? Well that does make things easier, he was sure it was safe but the extra help did take some weight off his shoulders. Hearing her speak of an arranged marriage with an Edani did surprise him until he remembered that he did agree to such a thing. At the thought of it caused him to get flustered again, but it would aid him to get one on his side so he gave a nod in response.
Yet soon he was to be at war, it made feel a bit worried inside not for himself but for his father. He hadnt seen his father in a few months and yet all these things were transpiring. He would have to send a letter to him before he was sent east. When she asked if he had any questions he shook his head. "No questions but I do wish to say that, no matter what Im told on this Island. Even if Im told my ambition will crumble before it even begins. I still plan to see it through."
Aiko stared at Kazumo for a moment. The last comment caused a certain feeling to slide down her spine, only to drift a smile to her lips. Walking towards Kazumo, she would place a hand on his head and then gently ruffle his hair.
"Good. I will say this before you possibly will hear your destiny. I am proud of you, Kazumo."
Staring at her as she approached him only to ruffle his hair brought both a feeling of slight happiness but also a feeling like a mother was embarrassing him in front of his friends. He still smiled despite the ruffling and nodded. "I'll try to keep making you proud."
The Fighting Fifth - An Iron-clad allied force...
[ Lightning Country | Hojo Dominion, the port-city of Inazaki ]
[ Mareo Hojo, 'Lord Hojo' ]
The ships moved into the port. The vessels carried a neutral, white flag, their sails not adorning any crest or symbols that affiliated them with any country. The group of ships swiftly rode on the waves past the security of the port and were allowed to anchor. The security was tripled for this occasion as nearly nobody that wasn't part of the selected armed force wasn't allowed anywhere near the port. Any curious bystander would be arrested or simply repelled with brute force by his guards and soldiers. A rather draconic measure but Mareo wouldn't sleep badly over some peasants that had their noses broken or teeth slammed in cause they were too curious.
From his position, he had a clear sight of the ships and what they carried. While the boarding planks were placed, Mareo saw the rows of soldiers marching of the tiremes. Their daunting armour was a sight to behold. Clad in lamellar plates, the reflective steel plates would cast the light of the sun back. Making it sometimes difficult to watch the row of soldiers marching to rally together.
Deciding to head towards the port, Mareo would place his hands on his back while his own personal guard followed silently.
The morning air was filled with the sounds of boots resonating as they kept going in their rhythm, the rustling of cloth and armour and commands of officers piercing the air.
The large troop marched in a column, all perfectly lined and at the same pace. Their armour reflecting the soft light of the sun, giving them a sort of elegance that seemed misplaced once one knew how effective these men were at killing. The Hojo soldiers that watched were like the newcomers, silent. Both in awe, distrust and perhaps disgusted.
Mareo watched the troops arrive and rally together underneath their officers. It had costed something to arrange these troops from the Iron country to be transported to the Hojo dominion. In fact, it had taken longer than he had desired because of the secrecy and wariness for Sanosuke or Saemund vessels to catch sight of their vessels, that went back and forth to the Iron country. But the preparation and caution had played off. For now, Mareo Hojo couldn't help but smile faintly.
Six hundred soldiers were delivered in secrecy, as promised. The price for this aid? That if the Empire of Akino would invade the Iron country, that the Hojo would do what they could to reinforce and aid them. A simple deal between the two. Besides, Mareo was aware that the Iron was hoping for something. Something he had on his mind as well. And with the aid of these disciplined killers? It could very well turn into reality.
The Iron troops would form a large formation on the dock, all standing at the ready with their weapons. If Mareo recalled, these men were part of the 'Fighting Fifth'. A heavy infantry brigade that specialised in shock troops, designed to break through strong points or simply massacre their enemies. A very useful ability, Mareo mused amused as he walked past the first line.
He stopped as he decided to look at the reflective armour. Before the Lord of the Hojo clan could properly investigate it from an acceptable distance, he noticed some movement heading his way.
Judging by the difference in attire, Mareo assumed that the few men that approached him were the leading officers and commander of the unit. The man at the front of the small group held his helmet underneath his right arm, his left lazily rested on the pommel of his katana. Judging from the man's scarred face and the fact he was balding meant he wasn't some upstart youngling officer.
Upon closing the distance at a respectful distance, the men in charge made a curt and short bow. Mareo would return the gesture with a subtle nod as the ghost of a smile crossed his lips.
"Captain Suko, Lord Hojo. I bring the greetings and hope of our glorious leader with us. He desires that you will rest easy with us fighting underneath your command and with your men." The commander finished, which sparked one of his officers to sneer a command.
All at once, the men slammed the blunt end of the naginatas on the ground and turned to the right. Without needing another word, the Iron soldiers were now facing towards their officers and the lord with his own guard.
Surprised, Mareo was impressed by the display.
"Lord Okio is a most generous and honorable man," Mareo started, his gaze slowly shifting from the soldiers to the commander and his officers. "I will certainly be at ease with the aid of you and your men, good captain Suko. I foresee already the start of a glorious alliance and cooperation between the Hojo and Iron." Flashing a polite smile, Mareo raised his right hand and snapped his fingers.
The gesture summoned a few soldiers and servants of his own, who attempted to hide their thoughts and feelings upon being greeted with the sight of the Iron soldiers.
Captain Suko threw a subtle glance at the summoned soldiers and servants before giving a subtle gesture with his left hand. A few of his officers would bark commands, causing the large formation of soldiers to turn in cohesion and starting to march.
"I also bring as agreed, the supplies that Lord Okio would provide."
"Most splendid, captain Suko. I will let you be briefed of the situation by one of my own. Your men will be given some good quarters and shall be allowed to rest from your journey." Mareo replied.
The captain slowly bowed his head but Mareo had seen the slight distrust on the man's features. It wasn't of any surprise that both parties weren't totally sure of each other. But for now, they were comrades in arms.
The captain would be guided away as the Hojo made certain that their newfound allies would be quartered in comfort to find some respite from their voyage. After all, soon enough they would depart for the border of the Hojo dominion.
Coffee or Tea? Pt.2
Meeting between Iri, Itagaki and Kaizen
A collab by Lesli, Con and Chrome
Location: The Owazuni Teahouse
Iri's eyebrows would rise but she remained silent for the time being. It wasn't that Itagaki disagreed with her that caused her to frown and visibly not approve of how Itagaki looked on the situation. It was more that the new order was something she foresaw giving a lot of issues. Kaizen reacted before she did, voicing his thoughts - or what she assumed to be Kaizen's thoughts.
"The jinchuriki are a vital asset. Certainly the tamer of the Hachibi. Not just only as military keypiece but also because of her reputation and the amount of legitimacy she can provide to whatever side she is on. Not to forget that she is also the half-sister of the Akinian Empress. A very valuable piece of diplomatic importance." Iri paused as she slightly cocked her head to the left. "I also need to advise caution. Just taking what may be in relation with the Sato clan will just provoke more people to be against your side. I don't know who the other jinchuriki is but now that I think of it, can we even take anything of the Sato clan? Do we know where Midori Sato is located?"
Then it dawned on her as she gave a glance towards Kaizen.
"No to mention, who else know of where the jinchuriki are located? Wasn't Asami Sanosuke the assistant of both the Fourth and Fifth Raikage?" Asking the question, Iri turned her gaze back at Itagaki. "Cause if she knows, I think it is best to just.." Then it dawned more on her as she stared at Itagaki. They didn't know where the jinchuriki were, did they now?
Itigaki considered Kaizen with careful regard before he spoke. "I cannot say with certainty what we will do once they are located." Kaizen was certainly inquisitive from the point of view of the Raikage, perhaps rightly so. "They cannot be lost to our cause, whatever move we choose to make." He then folded his hands. "I presume that you will share the location of the boy Kaizen? Certainly you understand the precarious position we are in currently? I cannot afford to delay even a moment to gain the legitimacy that having our lord Ranzaki here will give us." He sat back, now turning his attention to Iri. "I prefer open honesty, so I will be clear, I haven't any idea where the Jinchuriki are Iri. I haven't any idea who knows where the Jinchuriki are. I was not left much information by my predecessor. The priority is clear however, it is my opinion that while the jinchuriki are an asset, the true heir to the throne must be brought here to ensure his safety and our legitimacy."
Catching Iri's look, Kaizen found his respect growing for the new assistant. Her questions were valid and needed to be asked. It was clear that Itagaki had his sights set on getting things done, but in his haste to achieve results, it was quite possible that they could end up stepping on the wrong toes. In Kaizen's line of business that usually ended rather messily.
Letting both of them finish, Kaizen leaned forward slightly, taking another sip from his tea. "There's a saying," he began, glancing from Iri to Itagaki, "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast." Pausing, he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "It is a wise saying, but often forgotten as most overlook its importance." His attention focused mostly on Itagaki, Kaizen lowered his hand. "I understand that there is not much time to waste when it comes to taking action to prevent the Regency Council from gaining a hold on things. However, we do have enough time to plan so that we're always a step ahead of our enemy. The jinchuriki can be very valuable assets to the cause if the situation is approached properly. If we act with haste, we risk making the situation much worse."
Swirling the tea around in his hand, Kaizen took a moment before responding. "I am aware of the identity of both jinchuriki but, wherever they are, it is clear that someone wants them to remain hidden. That can either work in our favour or against it. As for the boy, I don't see why an operation would be required. If you wish his return I can assist with that."
Iri remained silent as the two men spoke once more. It became abundantly clear that they had little intel and no idea what they were going to do if they could even get their hands on the jinchuriki. Fair enough, a jinchuriki was a complicated matter of security and danger, all in one package. Then there was also the status that one of the jinchuriki, Midori Sato, had with her actions. Not to mention the connection that Midori Sato had with her supposed half-sibling, the Empress of Akino.
"How do you plan to find the jinchuriki?" Iri decided to ask Kaizen, instead of once more bringing up the fact that they had nothing to go off on or such. There were some thoughts that passed her mind but she didn't want to put any asset of her own to work for finding the jinchiki. Not yet, at least.
Itigaki considered the advice of the spymaster for a moment, and then nodded briefly. "Very well Kaizen, if you do not believe that interference will be necessary and you can handle this on your own, I will put my trust in you. Please help me bring Lord Ranzaki to the capitol safely." Itigaki decided that the mask was in the way of his drinking tea something terrible however, and he removed the article from his face, bringing the cup to his lips, happy to finally have the damned thing off. "I would second Iri's question in this instance." He said as he placed the cup back onto the saucer.
It appeared that they were finally getting somewhere and Kaizen was satisfied to hear that Itagaki would allow him to complete his work without interruption. Glancing towards Iri, about to answer her question, he noticed the Raikage finally removing his mask and smiled inwardly, though he showed no outward reaction that he'd even noticed. "While I do not wish to make myself redundant by giving away all my trade secrets," he began, a humoured smile forming on his face, "it is safe to say that there is one element to the jinchuriki that make them easier to find. Their chakra profile is significantly different to that of the standard person and much more potent." Leaning back slightly, Kaizen took another sip of tea before placing the cup down in front of him. "So that leaves us with two methods. One, if they are being hidden by someone who does not know how to mask their presence, then we simply have to cast a wide enough net and they will be easy enough to sniff out. And two," he said, raising one eyebrow slightly, "if they are being hidden by someone who knows what they are doing, then that limits the list of potential people with information on their whereabouts significantly. So we can begin targeting those who are familiar with the jinchuriki and it will be a rather simple process for my people to… collect… the information that we need."
Iri thought about it. It made sense to consider such methods as it would be hard to hide Bijuu chakra. Certainly if it was so rare and potent. "An average sensor can detect a chakra signature over a range of around a kilometer. A competent and experienced sensor can sense more than that, both in range and details. I feel that sending sensors would be a reasonable approach. But I must suggest a different way."
Locking her gaze on Kaizen, Iri spoke further. "We are in need of sensors to guard against a lot of dangerous threats that can approach us. Shadows send by the Regency council, utilizing methods that a sensor can detect. Not to mention that the Lightning country is quite large. And many areas are hard to reach with the current strife." She paused before giving her own suggestion. "However, if you know a person that has perhaps intel on where the jinchuriki are located, we might be able to persuade them. Or even turn to more draconic manners to get the information we want. Maybe even solving a different issue," the woman turned her gaze towards Itagaki.
"I believe that soon enough there will be an Imperial force on these lands to reinforce your side. In exchange for a rather hefty sum of resources to fund the Imperials expanding their maritime ambitions. Regardless of who promised, you are the Raikage. You are responsible." Iri spoke with an even tone, no emotion ringing through and no thought being betrayed by the blank expression. "Midori Sato is the half-sister of the Empress of Akino. She is a Hon, a Chonobi. I have some experience in dealing with Hyrlings, or more known as Sanosuke. If their manners aren't too far apart, I think it won't be far fetched that the Empress might be willing to send more troops and ask for less if you would allow Midori Sato to travel to the Empire. For, after all, how much worth is a jinchuriki?"
Itigaki considered the proposal for a few moments, allowing the table to lapse into silence as he sank into thought, considering the benefits. Certainly it would please the Empress if they sent along her half sister, but Itigaki wondered at this point how much it was really worth. Finally he came to a decision. "I do believe that you are right Iri, sending along the half sister of that Empress might very well endear her to our cause even further. Considering the debt that she is pushing us to pay for honoring the alliance, any relief in that regard at this point would be welcome." He turned his head to Iri. "If she is found, we will send her along to the Empire, barring any obvious considerations that will have to be taken into account at the time." He took another drink of his tea, then placed the cup down and folded his hands. "The Imperial force is one that I have given due consideration. Certainly the breadth of the commitment the Imperials have to our cause is as shallow as a puddle, and I fear that they are fickle enough to turn on us should their wishes not be met. Therefore we have been placed in a position where we must listen and carefully consider this force that the Empire sends. I should like it very much if their ranks could be infiltrated through some means, whatever they are Kaizen."
Taking a long moment before he would respond, Kaizen sipped his tea while considering what Iri and Itagaki had said. Setting the tea down, he tilted his head, addressing Iri's comments first. "Such methods can definitely be useful for retrieving information, however we'd need to ensure we had the right person first. Else we would be liable to simply end up on a wild goose chase when they inevitably tell us what they think we want to hear..." Scratching his chin for a moment, the spymaster continued, "I will have my people gather information on potential contacts and will keep you apprised of what they find." Shifting his attention to Itagaki, Kaizen nodded his head. "I would advise caution if there is any inclination to go back on our word with the Imperials. While their demands may be high, the price outweighs the cost of waging two wars."
Thinking about how one might infiltrate the Imperial ranks, Kaizen took another moment before continuing. "I will see what can be done to get on the inside, but if I believe that the risk of discovery is too high, I will not authorize one of my people to complete the mission. Should the Imperials discover a spy in their midst, the result of their wrath is likely to cause more damage to the Lightning than this civil war we are currently stuck fighting." Lifting his glass once more, Kaizen glanced inside, disappointed that it was almost empty. "It will help to remember that both the Empire and the Empress herself are quite young. As such, there is more for them to prove. We can use that to our advantage by putting them into a position where they feel they have won a victory in the eyes of their people. The bigger the victory, the more room we have to maneuver." Taking a last sip from his tea, Kaizen set it down and shrugged. "From what I have heard, the Empress is rather cunning for one so young. So it would not be advised to overplay our hand."
To be moulded into steel
Empire of Akino | Yakimara heartlands, many miles east of Tatekumo, at a fortified camp | Hiron Hon - Major General of the 3rd Imperial Division, Leader of Team 9 |
It wasn't easy for them. The rigorous training that was imposed on the members of team 9 - Karma, Kyoi, Yiko and Shikaroku - was more demanding than what most of them had faced before. The first week was filled with little sleep and constant physical training. Tests were held at the end of the day, usually after they along with others were to an exhausted and beaten state.
Without the comfort of a nice bed, soft pillows and sheets they were forced to get accustomed to sleeping in a tent. Only to be wakened up early by the lieutenant of their unit. And during this time, the group would learn that their lieutenant was anything but soft. A man that went by the name of Cynbel, though even the Yakimara serving underneath his leadership had a rather nasty nickname for him: 'Lieutenant Arse'.
A moniker due to the man's unfortunate facial features.
Hiron sometimes came to watch the training. Usually during the morning, at which the unit was tasked to walk in circles and carry a heavy pair of sacks - which were connected by a strong rope. The training was to carry the sacks while struggling to keep walking.
Which wasn't easy, to begin with, but certainly wasn't made easier with their lieutenant sneering and taunting them. Those who fell due to the weight or unable to continue would cause the entire group to be punished to other demanding physical tasks - or much severe: forced to skip breakfast for more training.
Usually, during these punishments, lieutenant Cynbel would remind them why they were subjugated to the harsh training. According to him, it was vital that their physical foundation must be built. So that they could properly defend the Empire and its people.
Only in the second week started to become a noticeable shift. More elaborate training in how to wield various weapons - blades, spears and shields - were introduced. These were, however, not light and usually made worse by the lieutenant, who didn't do much to improve his popularity among his unit.
And any attempts to help another during the training? These acts of altruism were punished severely as well, for lieutenant Cynbel was fully devoted to the idea that each person had to work for themselves, in an attempt to earn their place within the Imperial ranks.
Watching the group, Hiron leaned against a barrel. Chewing on the bite of an apple, he had taken some interest to see how the members of Team 9 performed. Needless to say, the physically demanding training and exercises were hardest on the genin Yiko and Shikaroku. It had made the Hon wonder at times if they would break, wanting it to stop and go home. But they continued.
Karma and Kyoi were more used to demanding training and exercises, which showed. But Hiron had some doubts and several times, he caught that they were struggling as well. However, he did nothing to lighten the burden on them - even if they had proven themselves on missions before this happening.
Currently, the unit underneath's lieutenant Cynbel counted 25 members. A full Imperial platoon. They were lined up in a formation with five rows, holding heavy wooden shields and a wooden spear.
"Each of you stands here with a purpose. Hm?"
All in unison, the group replied.
"Yes, lieutenant, sir."
Cynbel would pace back and forth in front of the formation, his eyes narrowed as he glanced at each person underneath his command.
"Most of you signed up alone, did you not?"
"Yes, lieutenant, sir," the group would respond altogether, used to respond like that to the 'questions' of their lieutenant.
"Yet, when you are born, you aren't alone. You came from a mother. And if you weren't too ugly, you would have a father." The lieutenant stopped his pacing, stopping in front of Yiko. "You got a mother and a father to protect you, to keep you safe." The lieutenant would continue his pacing as he continued his monologue.
"Why? Because when a person stands alone, they are vulnerable to a physical or mental attack," the lieutenant would now slowly come to a halt in front of Karma, "but when they stand with their brothers or sisters, committed to the purpose, they are no longer alone."
Cynbel would stride further, to the spot in front of the formation. Raising his chin slightly, he would place his hands at his back.
"Then they are part of an impenetrable force. Fall into the formation of squads."
Without any hesitation among the people in front of the lieutenant, they quickly assembled into smaller formations - the squads that shared a tent.
Grunting, it seemed almost like the lieutenant was going to say something. Turning to his right, he nodded as three soldiers were standing near a waggon and few barrels.
"You lot, charge them." Cynbel nearly sneered to one of the five groups.
The group would form up and attempt to move in on the waggon but were met with apples thrown towards them. Hearing from the grunts, the throws were anything but light and quickly caused some of the assigned group to waver behind. Soon enough, all appointed five were stopped into their tracks as their shields didn't cover them enough.
"Did I order you to stop?!" Cynbel sneered, walking to the group. He pushed one of the men aside as he continued towards the waggon. "Each apple thrown is the equivalent of an enemy breaking through our ranks! Allow that to happen and you're dead. Now back to your position, miserable bastards!"
As the five men would move back to their spots, Cynbel decided to instruct the group of Kyoi to move in.
"Sergeant Hyuuga, your group. On the double! Now!" The lieutenant sneered.
Hiron took a bite of his apple as he observed the group moving into their spot. Due to her already having the rank of specialised jounin, together with her experience, Kyoi was given the rank of sergeant. Though it was quite unclear if that meant she could count on more or less respect than Karma, Shikoraku or Yiko.
The group would move forward, their formation denser as they locked shields. An approving grunt escaped Hiron as he kept chewing on his bite.
The apples that were thrown smashed against the wooden shields and slowly but surely the squad seemed to get close to the waggon.
Then the lieutenant suddenly grabbed a few apples himself and climbed the waggon. With precise throws, he would manage to disrupt the formation and prevent the group from moving closer to the waggon.
Four weeks had it been. Four long weeks of what seemed to be never-ending training. Four weeks underneath the sneering and rather hostile command of lieutenant Cynbel 'Arse'. What seemed to be the dawn of the fifth week of listening to lieutenant Cynbel or executing his demands, would be changed.
The group was instructed to stand in rows, once more five by five. While the unpopular lieutenant was present, the man at the leading spot - in front of the formation would be captain Drest.
"You all have managed the first few weeks of training. This isn't the end of that training. You shall continue to work on yourself, to ensure that the Empire and her people can trust you to guard them. While I desire you all to be trained longer, time isn't a luxury we can count upon. The 12th is mobilised and we shall soon head out."
The captain introduced a pause as he glanced at the unit in front of him. "From today, your gear shall be prepared. And you shall work towards your stay within the ranks of the 12th brigade."
Soon enough, the fifth week would be less intense. The group would still be drilled every day but also receive more training in handling weapons. As learning the Yakimara language, to communicate better and in secret from their future enemies. At the end of the fifth week, each person underneath lieutenant Cynbel's command would receive their gear - somewhat tailored to their bodies.
At the start of the sixth? They started their march south.
"They did well enough," Drest stated as he watched how various detachments of the 12th started to move out of the camp towards the rally point. "But they aren't ready yet for what I have heard."
Hiron also looked at the passing troops. Soldiers, camp-followers and shinobi. All together for a singular purpose. It reminded him of another time and place.
"Perhaps not, but they will have to make do." Hiron stated, earning him a sideways glance from Drest.
"Your students also managed to pass." Drest stated after a few seconds of silence between him and Hiron. "Frankly, I was waiting for the report to hear that they were breaking. Demanding to know why they are drilled among the soldiers and not be given some more 'shinobi' privileges."
"Good. I was wondering if they would break too. They are probably less fond of me now." The ghost of a smile dawned on Hiron's lips. He decided to not illusion himself that Kyoi, Yiko or Karma were major fans of him. Perhaps even Shikaroku was pondering on to resign the military now?
But now? It was too late to have regrets.
Empire of Akino | Cho clan heartlands, some distance north of the port-city of Aegir, at a fortified camp | Hiron Hon - Major General of the 3rd Imperial Division, Leader of Team 9 |
The journey from the Yakimara heartlands would led towards the southern part of the Empire. Along the way, the group grew larger as more detachments of the 12th brigade joined them. All to rally near the city of Aegir, though dispersed among several small forts to not over encumber themselves - or cause a problem with the large population within or near the city.
With the long trek behind them, Hiron would walk through the camp. Many soldiers offered a resolute salute to their superior when spotting the Hon passing by, to which Hiron usually responded with a curt nod.
Arriving at the tent where Kyoi, Karma, Shikaroku and Yiko were stationed, Hiron would briefly eye the group.
"Sergeant Kyoi, Karma, Shikaroku, Yiko," Hiron called out as he waited for them to stand at attention. One person was missing. A soldier that become too sick and couldn't continue his duties, leading to that the squad was now with four instead of five people. "I am going to keep this short with you. You guys made it this far and I have little reason to believe you can't make it any further. While you have been drilled and instructed to fight among the ranks, you are still shinobi. As such, I have a task for you lot."
Glancing at them, Hiron paused before he continued. "To the west, there is another camp. Of captain Florus. He had send me word that he is worried about a particular group. A few men that constantly keep sneaking out of camp and cause a ruckus. As some of you may know by now, we are in the heartlands of the Cho clan. Chonobi folk like me call this the jarldom of Aegir." He would let the words sink in before he continued. "Folk around these parts aren't too happy about many things. As much you don't want to be here, they won't be overjoyed with you being here. Sergeant," Hiron threw a sideways look at the Hyuuga, "I thus task you with heading out. Head towards the camp of captain Florus and intercept any of his soldiers attempting to sneak out. Knock them out, kick some teeth in, use ninjutsu to restrict and capture. I don't care but don't kill your targets. For they are fellow Akinian soldiers.
You are to leave within two hours. That will be all."
The Answer He Wanted
[ Empire of Akino | Sarutobi Heartlands| A meeting between Kazumo Sarutobi ( @Oblivion666 ) and Voice of Bergjlot ( @Lesli ) ]
[ Kazumo travels to the island with the escort provided by Aiko to meet the Oracle, he goes through some minor challenges getting to her but end up finding her. Yet what he finds out from her at a certain cost manages to surprise him ]
The travel towards the island wasn't neither that long or dangerous. With the aid from a guide and a few Cho's, Kazumo's journey practically went without any hindrances. Time did seem to pass on slower the moment that the small group embarked from a small coastal place, towards the island.
The crew seemed rather experienced and capable of ensuring that the smooth journey would stay that way. The talk with Aiko had been merely five days before Kazumo would set foot on the island of Rún. His escort would continue to guide him, finding a place within the harbor city on the island. The next day, information would be acquired on how the Sarutobi would be able to find the mysterious oracle that claimed to speak in the name of Bergjlot.
The mysterious oracle apparently seemed to reside within the tall mountain, that was quite hard to miss. Locals seemed to attribute all kinds of supernatural happenings and occurrences when one would even go near the sacred place where the oracle was located. Yet, none would show any worry when getting questions from either Kazumo or the few Cho that escorted him.
Eventually, the trek was further prepared with a small backpack prepared with some supplies. For it was within Aiko's orders to the escort that they would travel for a certain distance before letting Kazumo venture further alone. Leaving the port city towards the mountain that resided in what seemed to be the centre of the island, the escort would state that they would wait for Kazumo's return as the path seemed to turn rougher and slightly steeper as they started to close in on the mountain.
He felt somewhat at ease with the crew leading him to the island, it wasn't exactly the most exciting trip there was but it still weighed heavily on him as they got ever closer to the island. Thankfully the escorts knew what they were doing and made it a bit more lively than pure silence the entire way. They would make it to the harbor of one of the cities where they would spend the night before getting information in the morning from the locals who had plenty to talk about and even where they should go to possibly speak with the voice of Bergjlot. It piqued his interest about all the possible supernatural events that happened when one was near, hopefully they were tame occurrences and not terrifying.
Heading out with supplies on hand the group would continue their trek as they escorted him closer and closer to the location they were informed of until Kazumo was informed that they would wait for him as the terrain started to become rougher for travel which might have been a sign they were getting closer. Nodding and thanking them he would continue on his trek through the terrain. Maneuvering through the terrain that became a bit more difficult by the minute, yet as he did he suddenly started to hear whispers. It caused him to stop and look around yet nothing showed any sign of whispering. It couldn't be the wildlife either, in fact he was wondering if the Island even had any wildlife on it. He hadn't seen a single bird or even marking of animals, it was almost void of life itself yet it somehow was calming to him. Despite the whispers and no signs of life he somehow felt calmer the more he continued traveling.
He partially wanted to take a step off the trail to see if he could find wildlife, but best not to get lost on an Island because he got curious about something minor. That would be quite the tale to hear about. Future King lost because he wanted to find a bird, something tells me that would be made into a song mocking him. Up ahead though he could see the path leading towards a cave, which as he approached the whispers also became louder. Despite the sound increasing though he was still perfectly calm, it was odd to say that despite it being loud he was calm. In fact he could probably go right to sleep should he really wants to. Yet upon entering the cave, as loud as the voices were, the dispersed just like that as well. Pulling out his torch and lighting it he began to walk through the cave. Carefully making his way through as to not trip and injure himself, also trying to see if the walls had anything written on them as he went. Yet the light up ahead signaled the end of the cave, which made him wonder if the whispers would be back at all.
However as he exited the cave and put his torch out, he stopped and looked around. He looked back behind him at the cave, and then back in front. He had…. just been on this road. It was literally the same road. The way it was laid out, each bump he had to maneuver around. The trees were even in the same positions. Only difference being, he never took a cave to get here. Despite that though here it was, on the road he traveled before getting to the cave itself. Cautiously now he continues traveling along the path again, this time trying not to get lost in the tranquility of the place and this time keeping his attention on his surroundings more. History repeated itself though as up ahead was the same cave which made him stop and look at it, the whispers there once again.
Looking around to make sure he wasn't missing any sort of hidden pathway this time around. He carefully made his way to the entrance and once again light his torch. Only one thing was different this time around. he could hear the voices more clearly this time. Still too many speaking at once but the whispers now spoke both Taika and Chonobi. Multiple voices all at the same time speaking. Different dialects too which was interesting but also made him wonder if he did the right thing now that he could somewhat hear them. Following the path once again it would lead towards the right this time and up ahead was a light this time.
As he neared it and the room opened up into a more spacious circle, he saw candle providing light in the room which in turn caused him to put his torch out as he wandered into the room. Gazing around the room he saw furniture very basic in design, he saw rather dark drawing on the walls which was the more dark setting so far despite the tranquilness he just experienced. In the center, however, was a stone altar where to his surprise was a rather young girl with black hair, no more than twelve years old but her arms and legs were tattooed. It almost made him jealous. He knew a few of them yet most were unknown to him. Even though he was older he still felt that she was way more…. refined? Than he ever was. Walking towards her slowly he would clear his throat. "Are you the Voice of Bergjlot? My name is Kazumo Sarutobi Sigeberth. It's a pleasure to meet with you."
The child simply stared at him, no sign of fear or distrust. A certain curiosity seemed present within her gaze as a smile started to dawn on her lips.Waiting for Kazumo to introduce himself, the child would rise up and make a rather elegant bow. "Welcome," she began as she straightened her back while folding her hands in front of herself. "I am called that, yes. I was also waiting for you. I am glad you are here now." The child would gesture to a chair as she spoke further. "It is also a pleasure to meet you. I hope that the journey wasn't a trouble. Or a bore." She said, while walking towards another chair, on which she decided to place herself upon.
She was waiting for him? Well it shouldn't be that surprising mostly if she spoke to Bergjlot, it shouldn't be horribly shocking to know that she was waiting for him. She probably knew all who embarked on her trail. Nodding as he would go and sit upon one of the chairs she gestured to, as she did the same. He started wondering if she was as young as she seemed, she certainly had manners they were in fact almost better than well respected leaders of the world. Yet he shook his head at her statement. "Very much the opposite, it made me too curious for my own good. The questions I could ask about this place, the trail seemingly restarting. The zero signs of wildlife, not even a single insect was to be found and yet it was very calming. However some things are better left a mystery I feel. Makes it more interesting that way."
The smile stayed as Kazumo replied on his turn. The child's feet didn't touch the ground as she sat on the chair, her legs bungeling while she slightly leaned forward - her eyes locked on Kazumo's. "Questions, that is why you are here though. Unless you have decided to visit me for no more than simply a talk?" The oracle asked, the amusement clear in her voice and phrasing as she responded back to Kazumo.
"Wait I can actually do that? Wait no that's not what I want answered!" Kazumo quickly responded, his brief curiosity getting the better of him. "You aren't wrong though, I am here for questions to be answered. Although I guess it could be better phrased as to what my future is to be. If I succeed in my ambition or if all is against me in it. Do I end up unifying my people, or do they wish to remain on their own without one leader to guide them?" Kazumo asked as he then looked at the ground pondering what to risk for an answer, it wouldn't be that long of a wait though as he looked back at her, and held out his arm. "Most I can offer is my own blood for an answer. I know the more important the offering, the better the answer. Yet…. I can't do that to my future child. They deserve a life more than I need a definite answer."
The child's smile slowly vanished as she seemed to become more serious. Listening to Kazumo, she would nod at certain points to emphasise that she understood why he had come to her. Glancing at the arm that he stretched out to her, the girl would remain silent for a few seconds.
"So, you will refuse to pay the price, if the goddess will request you to surrender the life of your firstborn or secondborn?" The girl frowned slightly as she would move off the chair and gently grasp Kazumo's arm. Her touch was quite warm, both comforting and unusual. "You sure about that?"
The way she worded that made it seem like he was looking down on the gods and goddess as if his children were too good for their answer but as she grasped his arm, he gave a stern nod. "I can't be a leader if I go back and change my mind now can I? So yes I'm sure, I respect the goddess but I also respect the life that is yet to be. So I'm ready when you are." Kazumo replied as his eyes lingered to his arm and her hand that had grasped it. It was warm, comforting even yet it also felt slightly off, maybe cause he knew what was coming next? Maybe cause he wouldn't like his answer. Maybe Neji caused him to be wary of people about to stab him. Yet he made his choice and he took a deep breath in and exhaled.
She simply nodded before pulling a small knife. The darker tint of metal gave away that it wasn't of steel but more crude iron. Holding the knife, the oracle would bring the point close to Kazumo's skin. But before the sharp point could penetrate and let his blood flow, the oracle pulled the knife away and grinned.
"Almost had you there, didn't I?" She asked, with a clear childish joy in her 'prank'. Taking a step back, she would shake her head lightly. "Your price isn't going to be your firstborn or any of your children. Nor sacrificing your blood." Gesturing to the altar, the child continued as the grin turned into a smile. "You got to pay another price. Come."
Walking towards the altar, the oracle waited for him to catch up and stand near the stone. "You wish to become the one that unifies the Sarutobi. And reclaim their old kingdom. Not the first or perhaps the last to desire that. The Goddess already has seen what you could do and be. And I might be allowed to share it, if you pay the price." Slightly bending through her legs, she would point at a few markings. The design being close to some markings within the Chonobi culture, having a religious importance. One of them being the mark that was usually related with offerings or temples to all the gods.
"You have to make an oath. A blood one, of course. But see that? You got to promise that you will restore the old temple." Throwing a sideways glance at Kazumo, the oracle spoke further. "Vow on your life to do that and I may tell you what you seek."
He readied himself the best he could but how did one ready themself to be stabbed on purpose? Yet before her blade could pierce his skin, she would pull the knife away with a smile on her face. The kind of smile one had when they pulled a really good joke on someone. He wasn't paying in any blood? He had a special price to pay? He wasn't sure if he should be worried or intrigued about this, but he followed as she asked towards the altar where she spoke of his wish to which she could possibly answer if he paid the price.
The Goddess had already seen what he could do and be, which only intrigued him more. Yet he was making a blood oath, an oath to restore the old temple which confused him as he looked at her. "Restore the old temple? I mean I can swear on that but I'm going to need to know which old temple I'm restoring."
The oracle locked her eyes once more with Kazumo, staying silent for some seconds before replying her answer. "You will learn what temple, I speak off in time. Right now, She doesn't deem it necessary for you to know all the details." The girl's voice gave away that she was fully serious and not playing a game with Kazumo. Gesturing to the altar near them, the oracle slightly frowned.
"More than that I can't really tell you. I wish that I could offer more clarity but She chooses the prices and what I can say about them." The oracle followed the statement with a disarming smile.
So the Goddess was speaking to her right now? Well guess it was to ensure he would follow through with it he supposed. He would smile at the young oracle and nod. "Then I swear on my life to restore this old temple of which she speaks. It must be rather important if that's the price she wishes me to pay, so I swear on my life to do it then." Kazumo replied now wondering though since she did say it was blood, if he was going to be stabbed or if this sacrifice was in fact his own life should he fail to do such.
The girl eyed him, once more with the curiosity that she had shown at the start of their encounter. Slowly nodding, she would reach out to one of Kazumo's arm. Gently grabbing his arm by the wrist, she would guide him closer to the altar. Its height was half of Kazumo's but a flat stone allowed the girl to elevate herself. Holding Kazumo's arm above the altar, the oracle took in a deep breath while using her free hand to unsheath the knife again.
Whispers started to invade Kazumo's mind again, becoming louder and softer like the tide of the ocean but then at a rapid pace. One voice started to become clearer as he could see how the oracle slowly and cautiously pierced his arm, the iron digging into the flesh lightly and drawing out blood. The oracle would seem to make a small cut and place the knife on the altar. Yet, no pain or discomfort followed.
The whispers started to fade as another spoke. One that gave a familiar feeling, gentle and warm. All the while, the oracle would slowly guide Kazumo to let blood drip on the altar.
"Keep it like that," she instructed, her voice briefly penetrating the indistinct whispering voice. Moving of her stone, the girl would hasty manage to find a small, wooden bowl and what appeared to be herbs.
As the oracle would continue her task, catching Kazumo's blood into the bowl, she started to softly hum. The humming seemed to cause Kazumo's blood to drip faster out of the wound but at a certain point, the bleeding seemed to halt as the oracle's humming shifted. Mixing in the herbs within the bowl, the oracle would start to pulverize them with a wooden instrument. All the while, Kazumo would start to hear the whispering voice clearer.
As the voice was still hard to understand, its intention seemed to instruct the young man to sit down again. It was at the volume as if somebody stood behind or next to him, as an invisible force seemed to gently push and drag Kazumo to sit on the chair he had occupied before.
The oracle's humming seemed to gain more volume as she kept mixing the herbs with the caught blood. Then she would place the bowl on the altar before spreading her arms.
In that moment, the gentle whispering voice was replaced with what seemed to be a thousand voices speaking in Kazumo's mind. A sensation of adrenaline, dizziness and being drowsy slammed into his being, all the while voices spoke to him. The last that Kazumo would see before succumbing was that the oracle grabbed the bowl and turned to Kazumo. Dipping her left fingers into the bowl, she flashed a smile at the young man.
Then darkness swept in, driving the voices away and casting Kazumo to fall to the ground, falling to a deep slumber.
A soft humming echoed through the room. There were no whispers or voices that invaded his mind nor any odd mixtures of sensations that propelled him. A certain calmness reigned as he would wake up to the oracle humming, as if nothing had happened. But a look at the walls and altar would reveal a more sinister scenery.
The dark markings at the wall were splattered with blood, the altar seemed to radiate a certain presence and the oracle sat where Kazumo had seen her at the first time. Only this time, specks of blood dirtied her face and arms. Glancing at Kazumo waking, the oracle smiled.
"You are awake. Good. Your snoring was quite awful at first." The oracle would rise up and close in the distance, holding out a hand towards Kazumo. "Ready to hear your answer, Kazumo?"
His acceptance of this deal seemed to be good enough for the oracle to begin the steps for him to receive an answer to his question. A slight worry was still in him about willingly letting someone just cut him open, but he was more accepting of this because it was needed for it to even work. As his arm was held over the altar, his mind was once again invaded by whispers getting louder and softer that changed from soft to loud swiftly. Yet one voice started to pierce through all the others as the oracle carefully pierced his flesh with the knife, despite his blood flowing he would never have even know if he wasn't watching her perform these steps.
As the whispers began fading as one was becoming clearer with each one vanishing, he couldn't help but feel more calm and relaxed than he's been in these last few months. Doing as the oracle said and letting his blood drip onto the altar, he basked in how serene it felt even when her humming seemed to speed up his blood flow and at the same time halt it altogether. While the Oracle was mixing herbs and his blood in a small wooden bowl, the one voice while more clear still seemed difficult to understand. Despite this though he felt as though it was directing him to the chair he sat on earlier, even though he didn't really remember doing it on his own he felt his body move towards the chair and take a seat.
As she seemed to finish whatever she was doing the one voice became just a voice among the thousand he was hearing earlier. Only this time it made him dizzy and sleepy all while he felt his heart beating faster and faster. Yet try as he did to stay awake all he saw was the oracle smiling before his vision faded to black.
---
As he woke back up the room was much how he remembered it only this time… there was a lot more blood splattered on the walls and on the oracle herself. Was this his blood? He didn't remember bleeding out that much, but it could be whatever she mixed his blood in was also thrown on the walls. He didn't notice at first until she spoke up about his snoring, but her voice was the only one he heard. Did that mean she got the answer and as such the voices cleared away? As she held out a hand towards him she would also ask if he was ready to hear the answer. To which he took her hand and gave a nod, "As ready as I will ever be." was his response, he after all already decided he would continue on this path no matter what answer he was given.
Pulling him up, the oracle flashed a smile. "I hope you are. For I will be truthful with you," she started, beckoning him to come with her to the altar. The mixture of blood and whatever the oracle had used to mix it with still seemed fresh. And if anything, it seemed like a downright mess.
"In short, you probably want to know what you achieve. Or that you will achieve on what you want to achieve." The fact that the oracle seemed no less than a dozen winters old made it likely confusing as she didn't seem to think that her comment seemed rather vague.
"In short? If you follow your current path? Then yes, you will succeed. You will get what you aim and desire. But propechies aren't that easy. Nor are destinies. The future is a constant flow. For while the Goddess can see and understand much more than you or I ever will, her answer can be very different tomorrow. It is based on your decisions, Kazumo, descendant not from Sigeberth."
Stating the last, the oracle frowned slightly as she turned fully towards Kazumo. It was clear that she was being serious with her words, no single sign on her features or voice hinting that she was trying to mess with him, again.
"You introduced yourself as Kazumo, a Scylding that can trace his lineage back to Sigeberth? I fear you can not." She paused. "You can trace your blood back to one of the kings that once ruled the old kingdom of Scyldings. To the king Theodulf, father of Sigeberth. But your bloodline doesn't go through Sigeberth's line. But of Astride."
Allowing a moment to let the revelation sink in, the oracle just continued - almost as if she lacked the idea of empathy that this could be something painful to hear.
"If you do remember the legends correctly, it was Astride that led a large amount of people away. Though nobody knows what became of her, some of her descendants still have the same hair as she does." Slightly, the oracle leaned in closer. "Blue hair, much like the waves of Egir."
The way she started off already made him expect to hear he would fail in his endeavor, yet instead she told him if he followed his current path that yes he would succeed, but prophecies weren't easy to know, nor were destinies. It made sense, just cause he would succeed now doesn't mean he would succeed if he started being a tyrant, or if he even made the wrong enemies. Yet what caused his eyes to widen was when she said his name but that he was not a descendant of Sigeberth, this is what was most confusing to him. It's what he was told his entire life so how could his lineage be wrong?
As she explained further that he could trace his blood to one of the old kings, it was not Sigeberth but Sigeberths father that he could trace it back too. Instead of Sigeberth it was Astride's that his bloodline came from. He was very much still silent, as he knew of her but what he knew anyone could know from reading a few paragraphs. Not much was known about her besides she led people away and that her hair was…… Blue. Even as the oracle finished he was still silent as he tried to figure this all out in his head, yet he would be thinking about this for a good amount of time.
"I…. I see." Some more silence followed after he spoke as he was trying to wrap his head around what she just said. "I want to say that can't be true, yet I always did wonder why my hair was blue when majority of the Scydlings have darker colored hair…." Some more silence followed as he knew he got his hair color from his mom, which only further confused him and made him have more questions. Yet he supposed that was the price of getting an answer, might hear some things you didn't think you would.
"Well I thank you for what you told me, even if some of it was very unexpected to hear. Just one last thing this old temple, when I do find it will the goddess speaks to me, or give me a sign that this is the temple I'm meant to fix?"
The oracle would remain silent, allowing Kazumo to take in the news. What he would do with was his decision. He would need to shape his own destiny, either confirming to what the goddess Bergjlot saw in him today, or cause it to shift or crumble. When he spoke up, there was a certain curiosity visible from the oracle's features. But she kept herself silent until Kazumo posed another question.
"Its what I do. Though, I should thank you for not trying to harbour any hostility towards me. Many 'greater' men showed less understanding as you do today, Kazumo. As for your question," an apologizing smile would spread over her lips, "I fear that I don't know. I believe that you will learn when the time is there. Even though I am the whisper of the goddess, I don't know how she commits her wonders or acts from time to time."
Pausing, she would glance briefly at the altar before back at Kazumo. "I can only now give you hints to your destiny. As I said, follow the road you have chosen. Keep the Wolf close and find the Snake. Shed the blood of the Lamb. And accept the Raven." Making a small bow with her head, the oracle would take a step back.
"Can't get mad at what I wanted to know. I came here willing to continue my path even if you told me all the odds were against me. Which I was kind of expecting, hearing that my lineage is different than what I thought it was, that was rather surprising. Not enough to change my mindset though." Kazumo said as the oracle would tell him even though she didn't know, but that she believed the goddess will let him know when the time is there. Guess that would suffice he supposed, as long as he knew then he could fulfill the end of his deal.
It was now time though that she could give him hints, one of which was to follow the road he has chosen, then came the riddle. Keep the wolf close and find the snake. Shed the blood of the Lamb and accept the raven. He did like a good puzzle, this would be something he would have to write down. The wolf close he felt referred to the Hons, but it couldn't be that simple. The snake might be the trickest part, and the lamb could mean many things all of which he felt ended in a lot of death though. Then accepting the raven… Accept the other Scydlings? He wanted to ask questions but he already knew these were the only answers he was getting. "Well its a good thing I like a good riddle. I thank you again for all that you did. Maybe one day when I achieve what I'm meant to, maybe then we can have that chat cause I'm still very curious about the trail to here." Kazumo said with a slight chuckle and smile.
When Kazumo thanked her, the oracle nodded slowly. "Maybe we can. I will be waiting for your return. Good luck on your journey to your destiny. May the Gods watch over you and your ancestors guide you." Subtly gesturing to the exit, she would give him once more a small bow.
To the North
Yamada Suzu "Rabbit"| Ylfling Territory, Framí
Suzu heads North to the aid of the Raikage with the contingent of Yakimara troops, much to their distrust.
Authority is questioned and demonstrated.
"Captain Ardál." Suzu said as she dropped from her horse with a heavy thud, "Just what am I looking at?" she asked rhetorically as she surveyed the group of men before her as they appeared to be divvying out food stuffs and a smaller assortment of rather expensive looking items.
Captain Ardál turned with a start to take in the Sworn Sword before him, the look of disgust and distrust barely noticeable on his features as he shifted from surprise to a more controlled demeanor, "Merely taking stock of what the generous Ylfings," The man struggled with the word, "have graced a passing Imperial Brigade with." the Yakimara rolled out with a practiced ease of deception that might have been lost on a Taika of a different background.
Suzu nodded along as the men behind Ardál hurriedly went about stuffing the more expensive looking items into sacks and getting back to sorting the foodstuffs they had been "gifted".
"I take it your men are able to eat silver and gold then?" she stated flatly as she motioned to the sacks the men had, "Or do precious jewelry keep a Yakimara warm at night?" she pressed as a number of the men at the group began to stand from their huddle.
"Now now," Ardál began with his hands out in a placating gesture, "they are merely giving us what is rightfully ours, nothing more, nothing less." he stated with a thin smile. There was a hoot from someone in the group followed by a chorus of low grunts of approval for the words from their Captain.
Suzu had heard this before, that since these were their ancestral lands that everything within it was rightfully theirs for the taking. Though the logic behind it was flawed, she could partially see the glimmer of something greater it provided a broken people such as these Yakimara.
"These Ylfings are on our land!" one of the men from the group shouted, though which of them was lost to the gathering group of faces. Another chorus of approvals.
Suzu sighed and turned to her horse, the sight of her weapons so tempting. To simply end all of this before her would have been far easier, and she was positive she could take the twenty or so Yakimara she would need to completely break the fighting spirit of the rest of them. But she turned back to the group of men behind their Captain as they continued to speak their minds about their lands and their property.
"Maybe you should have won the war then." she stated with a shrug before quickly dropping her voice to talk only to Ardál, "Clean this up Captain. Put an end to your men's looting now. At least while the people they loot are still Imperial Citizens. Or shall I tell the Empress herself of the transgressions of your Yakimara against her people? Against Chonobi no less." she said before moving back to the horse.
Suzu had been sat at the table within the tent she had been provided by the Yakimara unit. It was a rather spacious tent, the kind meant for commanders and other dignified guests to a war camp, the ceiling was raised well above her height, a table with chairs had been provided, even a small wood burning stove and tea set had been laid out with tea leaves to go with it. She sat and studied the most recent map of perceived battle lines and territory gains of the different Lightning factions in their confused little civil war.
She moved her gaze across the Hojo battle lines, drawing clear in her mind the purposes for their positions as it was evident on the map before her. She moved to the Sanosuke and wondered if anyone other than the Regency themselves had decided to be offensive in this war as she eyed the Sanosuke defensive lines as well. The rustle of armor and low murmur of disgruntled voices outside her tent drew her attention away from the map as she turned in her seat to face the tents entryway.
The flaps came open without a word of warning as a group of young Yakimara soldiers sauntered their way in without saying a word. She tallied the weapons at the young Yakimara's hips and then took count of those being held in hands before rolling her eyes at them, "Did my words strike a chord? Upset that I'm right?" she asked as she remained seated and simply turned her body to face the Yakimara.
"A Taika cunt like you shouldn't even be here." one of the Yakimara sneered at her, placing a focused emphasis on her origin as he pointed the short sword in his hand at her, "We've decided to give you a chance to up and leave before we make it clear what we're owed and toss your body in the marsh where it won't never be found." he threatened as some of the Yakimara around him muttered agreements in Yakimara and smiled at their show of intimidation.
Suzu sighed and began to slowly countdown from sixty in her head, "I'll do you one better. You young blood trash leave my tent and I never speak about this to your Captain, or you stay and I gut two of you to prove a point and leave the other five alive." she smiled.
It didn't take the Yakimara boys long to react to her words, the first came forward with a sloppy downward slash, Suzu contrived they were drunk as he did so and simply came up inside his swing planting a fist squarely in the boys jaw and sending him reeling back.
Another came for her at the side, a short dagger flashing forward toward her throat as he moved. With a small movement Suzu broke the boys wrist as it went by where her head once was and took control of the dagger from him. In another moment she passed the blade over the boys elbow, slicing deep into the joint and simply kicking him back before turning for the others.
Unphased by the two failed attempts a pair of the Yakimara rushed her from either side. Stepping between the closest of the men she brought the knife down before spinning to meet the second and gutting him the same as the first. The men stumbled to the ground as they clutched helplessly at their spilling insides and screamed.
Turning to the remaining Yakimara, Suzu spun the weapon in her hand and wiped the men's blood on the table cloth before shrugging, "So are we done here?" she asked. The remaining men quickly made to gather their comrades and ran for the door as Suzu watched in slight boredom.
"Twenty two." she said as she stopped her count down from sixty.
[ The Daimyo Castle | Ranzaki, the capital of the Lightning Country ]
[ Yakamochi of the Tano Clan | New master of arms for the Regency council forces ]
The situation was quite painful. The attacks that had been launched had done nothing but inflict some damage on the Raikage's forces. But the Great Clans? They likely had suffered minimal casualties judging by the reports. Or in some cases, lack of reports that detailed on what had happened with the forces that had been sent out. The only victory that the Regency had gained was on the Raikage. But nobody had decided to make use of that victory to press on in both a tactical and strategic manner. Which surprised as confused Yakamochi. Why had nobody done anything to prevent those troops to press further?
The lack of any officer or higher rank to be questioned did worry Yakamochi. He would have been very curious to know who had been pulling the strings behind the manoeuvres.
Hearing the door opening, Yakamochi faced away from the table with the maps. Spotting the bald monk to enter the room, Yakamochi made a small but respectful bow towards the older man. He wasn't a man of religion but the sight of the monk didn't do much to comfort Yakamochi. For one, what kind of religion did the monk belong to? So far he knew, no religion within the north had bald men with tunics like the man that approached him.
"Ah, I see that you are already quite busy, Lord General," the man stated with a polite and rather cheerful tone, "I hope that I am not bothering you. But I wanted to tell you this news myself. I have been able to muster even more men than I initially told you." A smile seemed to grow on the monk's face, emphasising the good news. "I am pretty sure that you're able to set them to good use."
Yakamochi now really didn't trust the monk. Nodding slowly as he acted as he took in the good news, the general turned to the table with the maps. "And where do these men come from?" Yakamochi asked, turning his attention back at the monk. "I am most curious to know which clans are still on our side. It would help to end this conflict if they were to advance on certain points from another angle."
The monk frowned slightly but his smile didn't disappear. It slightly grew, which gave Yakamochi a bad feeling. "Don't worry, Lord General. I have managed to flock some of the faithful to our side. Those who would be willing to give their life in order to see the realm endure." The monk's eyes narrowed slightly as he made a small bow. "I can try to answer other questions if you would have more."
A cold shiver ran past down Yakamochi's spine. He wasn't sure what to think but in all his years, he hadn't been warier of a person. Licking his lips quickly, he shook his head. "No, I am content with knowing more are willing to flock to our banners." He answered. His mind was racing with thoughts and questions, his gut telling him to either move away from the monk or strike him down before he could commit an attack himself.
"Ah, very good. I heard that the Lady Regent is well content with your capabilities Lord General. I am looking forward to hearing about your future victories against the rebels." The monk made a small bow with his head before turning away, to leave the way that he had came.
Yakamochi stared at the monk's back. The beads of cold sweat slid down the skin of his back. His lips parted as he wanted to say something but found himself unable to. After a second of gathering his strength, Yakamochi decided to speak up.
"What is your name, good sir?"
The monk turned around, the smile still present on his lips.
"You can call me brother Kata, Lord General. Or just Kata, if it would please you."
He glanced at the present people. Each of them was veterans of the Great War or had, at least, a few years of experience leading others on military exercises. These men and women knew that the situation wasn't great but they had faith that they could turn this civil conflict around. For a moment, Yakamochi forgot all about his encounter with the monk. He was never much interested in politics but war? That he could understand.
The first to speak up was Koryusai, his youngest brother that had joined him to help fight for the Regency clan. "If the counting is correct, we got full garrisons on the border with the Raikage. They haven't attempted to launch an attack on any other fortification. The towns and fortifications that we got at the other fronts are untouched as well." The young man began, pointing at the map that was laid out on the round table. "Currently, with the new addition of reinforcements we command an army of, at least, eighty thousand."
Yakamochi let that sink in. He still didn't trust where this 'Kata' had gained his troops. Reports on where they had appeared were vague. Too vague to make any sense of it. Last time that he had checked, grown adult men that could serve as fight in wars didn't sprout out of the ground. He glanced at his other brother, Hogai. The looks that were subtly exchanged made it clear to Yakamochi that they both were most curious and wary where all these fighting men had came from.
"Perfect. With such a number, we can launch an offensive against the rebels. Perhaps we can try to start with dividing it into two parts. One to attack them directly while the other half moves to puncture them at another point. Divide and conquer!" One of the commanders suggested, a man by the name of Yamazaki Hirokumi. His tall and broad build, together with his bald head - riddled with scars - sure made him appear intimidating. "The Raikage's forces won't be able to withstand so much at once."
"After the Raikage, we are also dealing with the Great Clans. All of them. Who are still at full strength." Hogai stated. The Tana clan member frowned as he would gesture to the map. "Right now we are facing conflict at three fronts. I am sure that once the Great Clans notice that we only focus on the Raikage, they will attack us. The chance large that it will occur with impunity."
"So, perhaps we should create another front for the Raikage. Weakening them without risking losing forces," another suggested. A man of shorter height and softer voice. Yet, Mayeda Kano commanded respect with his presence. The way how the man carried himself revealed his confidence. And he had good reason to be confident with his record as a leader and even former shinobi.
"Currently, we are facing the Alaricus clan. If I am not mistaken, the nomadic clans in the south have yet to proclaim who they are fighting with. If we can convince them that we are far from losing and facing the Alaricus? Then we will open another front that the Raikage can't just deal with. Certainly not with those nomads tackling and harassing the supplies that we can't reach."
"That's a good idea. Is there a way that we can contact them?" Yakamochi asked. His question gained a response from Koryusai.
"We have some training officers and even some that serve here in the capital. We can send them to ride south. We can send multiple groups to avoid that the Raikage can block the plan with just capturing one. And if he does, that just leads to more credibility for the nomadic clans to join our side."
"Good. See to it that it is done as soon as possible. Furthermore, I want to prepare a part of our main force. We will move out soon and hit these positions..."
Team 4 Operation - Part 3
[ A collab between @FrostedCaramel , @Aliceee , @RedFox , @Oblivion666 and @Oetje | Team Four is setting out on an operation within the city of Ardara, an important political, religious and cultural site for the Sarutobi people and clan. Their task? To oversee and protect a minor leader that has may be the target of an attack, orchestrated by a rival noble family or faction. ]
- Part 1 -
- Part 2 -
Aoi found herself rolling her eyes so hard that she was almost positive the rest of the team could feel it through the mind link, "Of course, I should have thought about not being seen earlier. Fuck that was an easy fix." she thought sarcastically to Madoc and the rest of the team before her thoughts were cut short by Meilin's call out of the danger lying in wait ahead.
Quickly sending a confirmation of Meilin's orders to the team Aoi would find herself moving much faster over the rooftops than she had before. Every few meters she stole a glance to the sky to find the oversized bird that was Meilin and close in on the position that she had wanted Dagrun and herself to move to. After jumping another alleyway she found herself stopped before the edge of another larger alleyway. Hanging back enough to not be seen from below she'd move to the middle of the gap in the rooftops, "I'm here I think. What's the plan for this? Do we wait? Do we move first?"
Meilin remained silent as she continued to circle around. Aware that she had to make a call, she threw a look at where Madoc and Mamoru likely were at. A distance away from the set up ambush.
"Aoi and Dagrún, you are free to engage on ahead." Meilin ordered, deciding to keep herself out of it unless it was truly required to swoop in.
Following the whole conversation, Dagrún tried to get more adjusted to the voices that were in her head. Was this how crazy people experienced voices? Probably. However, Dagrún's attention shifted when Meilin reported about hostiles. In truth, it wasn't that much of a surprise. The people of Ardara despised Taika, thanks to their lovely bits of history and interaction during the daimyo that once ruled. But every Allthing was riddled with snake like tactics and plots like these. Remembering a saying that an Allthing didn't go without any blood flowing, Dagrún threw a look up in the sky. Spotting the larger raven, Dagrún didn't hesitate to pick up the pace.
"I am on my way, cap'," Dagrún reported on turn, "Nearing position." She would later respond after crossing some distance. People did start to notice her, wondering why she was vaulting over obstacles as well pushing some people out of her way to reach her desired position faster.
Nearing the entrance to the place where the ambushers were waiting, Dagrún felt her blood running faster. The temptation to run loose was starting to become tangible for her but she would reel herself in.
A few tense moments passed as Meilin seemed to be weighing her options before passing on a decision. Finally the order to move first against the ambushers came down. Aoi felt a small smile spread across her lips as she gave a nod that no one would see, "Moving then." she responded over the mind link.
Aoi formed a bird seal and felt the iron moving beneath her clothes, a breath later she sprinted at the gap, jumping well before the point required to clear it to the next roof. In the brief glimpse she had in the moment before she began to plummet to earth she was able to pick out the two closest of the men beneath her and then she had more pressing things to worry about, like gravity.
Her stomach lurched as she suddenly felt weightless and then a moment later her feet touched the ground as softly as if she had only jumped in the place she now stood. There was a brief moment of bewilderment on the closest ambushers face as Aoi gave him a smile, "Hello." she spoke in Taika as she waved a hand that was slowly being enveloped in iron. The man stood and yelled for his comrades as he spun the dagger in his hand once and stepped toward Aoi.
The dagger flashed faster than Aoi expected it to and she brought her fist up to meet it with only enough time to stagger away from the man. Gaining her footing back quickly she spun herself about and landed a fist to the face of another man that had been moving behind her, the iron of her fists crushing the man's nose and sending him reeling as blood gushed. Spinning once more to face the original ambusher she'd take a few mocking steps back before speaking now in Chonobi, "Come on then." she smiled as she noticed the groups thorough attention now placed on her.
'They're all a bit focused on me, so now would be a good time Dagrun.' she thought to the group.
Appearing at the opening of the alleyway, Dagrún narrowed her eyes. Lightning flickered briefly across her flexing fingers, a visible hint of the young woman's excitement for the imminent clash of muscles and will. Spotting Aoi, Dagrún scoffed as she would start to mould and focus chakra. Leaning slightly forward, she spotted a few targets that stood close together. Most attention was caught, however, by Aoi's little trick - which was quite neat but Dagrún wouldn't think or admit to it.
"I am on it," Dagrún replied through the telepathic connection as she felt the familiar rush, "One, two."
The counting began as Dagrún seemed to appear behind an ambusher out of nowhere, the speed utilized from the iadò technique allowing her to approach the man without allowing him to react properly. The right hand of Dagrún clenched into a fist, engulfed with crackling lightning as the young woman slammed her gloved fist into the man's back.
The nearby hostile turned towards Dagrún as she struck down his compatriot, his eyes widening as the lightning seemed to briefly envelop his ally before retracting rapidly back to Dagrún's fist.
Moving once more with high speed, Dagrún was forced to lower herself as her second victim lashed out with a handaxe. Not stopping herself, the Hon would literally slam herself into her target. The weight and lightning-chakra robbed the man both of his breathe and ability to stand, while Dagrún rolled on the ground before swiftly moving on her feet.
Scoffing, it was quite evident that the young woman seemed to enjoy the rather violent scenery that she found herself in. Another man moved in to try to neutralize her. Seeing the man swinging from the right, Dagrún moved along with his movement as she wanted to aim her next attack to take out her assailant with a single hit.
Instead of going through with his attack, Dagrún's assailant decided to reveal it was a mere feint. Lashing out with a fast jab, Dagrún felt the sharp sensation running across her left arm as steel easily sliced through cloth and skin.
Grabbing the man's extended arm, Dagrún slammed her right foot against the man's knee in order to bring him down as her free hand grabbed the man by the back of his head. In a fluid movement, she would introduce the man's face in a rather grim fashion to the ground.
"Three."
Not afforded the chance to watch what Dagrún was up to, Aoi could only assume that the woman was counting her downs. What her arrival did afford Aoi was a brief moment of opportunity, the group was now thoroughly disorganized with the sudden turning of the tables on them.
The man in front of Aoi gained his focus back on Aoi before dashing forward and slashing at her. Stepping inside the arc of the man's slash Aoi placed a well aimed punch to the center of his neck, the satisfying crunch of his windpipe collapsing well before he fell to the ground gasping served as more than enough confirmation that the man would be in no condition to fight again for several months.
"Two." she thought as she wheeled on the next closest ambusher. She brought a hand up and deflected away the mans slash in a flash of sparks as metal met the iron of her hand before she brought a knee up squarely into the man's stomach. The ambusher doubled over and Aoi simply moved to his side and brought her elbow down hard on the back of his head, brining herself and the man to the stone ground beneath them. Taking only a second to ensure the man was out cold she'd rise to her feet as a further three ambushers, now with their senses about them, rushed her at once. "Three."
The iron on her hands hissed as it flowed out into the air around her and formed into small balls. Choosing her targets as best she could as the men closed she let off a few of the iron bullets and watched happily as they caved the man's knees in and passed messily out the back side. The nearest man stumbled forward and slid a few feet toward her screaming in agony. She took a second to wonder if the man would ever be able to walk again before reforming the iron before her into a flat square in an attempt to stop the dagger that she could only register briefly as it left the hand of one of the other men before her.
The iron gave as the dagger passed through it and Aoi found it oddly surreal to watch the blade embedding itself in the meat of her left arm just below her shoulder. No pain followed, but what pain left lacking her surprise took over. With a yell she sent the broken square of iron forward fast enough to knock the man from his feet and send him sprawling on the ground. She brought the iron down hard on his face and watched him go limp beneath it, "Five." she stated through the link before moving farther from the remaining man.
"Heh." The excitement and rush of the violence that started to take over in the alley became more 'tangible' as Dagrún could afford a moment to view Aoi. Spotting a hostile attempting to approach her from the left, Dagrún was swift enough to react to the first few swings. Her attacker wielded a knife and didn't seem to waste effort or chance to make large swings. The jabs were fast and ferocious, likely what he would have done to their protege if they hadn't been spotted by Meilin.
Making a pivot, Dagrún would evade another jab. As the man pulled his knife back, the Hon moved forward with a fist swung towards the man's face. The punch landed and caused her opponent to briefly stagger. Hearing something, Dagrún was about to twist her head slightly to the left to view what it was. Only for her world to turn black, followed quickly by a blinding light that hurt her eyes. Dizzy, Dagrún grumbled as she would feel another smack, this time against her right shoulder.
Right after the last attack landed, lightning seemed to surge around Dagrún's hands as she would unleash it nearby. It briefly seemed to take the shape of two beasts but the turbulent energy would smack against the ground, appearing to creep and provide a make-shift barrier around Dagrún.
Managing to recover, Dagrún would retract the lightning and leave a part to slowly ebb away. The previous hostiles were found on the ground, their bodies stiff but their limbs every so in a few seconds appearing to tremble or slightly move.
"Five," Dagrún stated as she rolled with her shoulders.
Sucking in air as she danced away from another man with a dagger, Aoi didn't bother to check the dagger buried in her arm as she focused on the flashes of the blade surging toward her. With a simple thought and a bit of focus the iron dust that had collapsed around the face of the last man she took down surged back into the air and quickly flowed toward the new threat from behind him. It flashed in the air as sunlight reflected off of it as it made its quick pass down in front of the mans hands.
Still dodging backwards Aoi found it rather interesting to watch the man come to the realization that his dagger, and the fingers holding it, had been severed clean from his hand. Without giving him a chance to yell out in pain or confusion Aoi dashed forward and landed a kick to his stomach sending him sprawling to the ground. Still moving with the momentum of the dash, she finished the man by simply kicking his head as hard as she could as she moved past him to the final two men that were clearly moving on Dagrún at the other end of the small road.
Mamoru was walking behind their target, trailing it at a safe distance with Madoc. He kept listening to the mind link and he felt his excitement growing, but he managed to keep calm. He was eager to prove his worth in combat, but their last order was to stay at a safe distance. He kept checking their surroundings for any signs of danger, but other than some unpleasant looks and low grumbles, nothing was coming towards them. The young Senju clenched his fists and took a deep breath to calm himself down, than spoke up loud, not to interfere with the mind link."Hang in there, Aoi, Dagrún!"
Dagrún turned to face what more opposition they would be facing. Only to spot two men to close in on her. Her gaze darted from one to another rapidly as she spotted that both men were armed with knives. Taking a defensive stance, Dagrún found herself forced to back a bit away as her assailants moved in fast, while keeping distance between them to force Dagrún to split her attention between them.
Narrowing her eyes, the Hon would suddenly rush forward. The man on her right would attempt to jab at her, which she managed to evade. In a quick response, Dagrún lashed out and felt how her left fist connected to the man's cheek, the force and accompanied force of lightning sending him to the ground - his limbs briefly seemingly moving on their own. The crackling of lightning sneered through the air but was quickly followed by the Hon gasping for air.
The second assaulter managed to plunge his knife into Dagrún's side. Using his other hand to get a good grip on Dagrún, he yanked his weapon out, about to deliver another stab before Dagrún could react properly.
With a sense of satisfaction Aoi watched as one of the two men went down in a heap as lightning flared around Dagrún's hand only to have the feeling quickly pulled from her senses as the fight quickly turned from the Hon's favor.
"Dagrún!" she called through the mind link as she watched the mans blade slide out from her side. Her mind ran through the possibilities as she sprinted full for her teammate and it settled on the fact she was simply too far to make it in time.
The blade began its plunge toward the Hon only for the man to be thrown like a rag doll from where he had stood. The knife clattered across the alleyway and a large manhole cover spun in place only a meter from where the man lay seemingly lifeless against a building.
"I wasn't going to make it-" Aoi huffed as she slid to a stop next to Dagrún and sat the blonde down, "I couldn't let him—" she motioned to the man and then back to Dagrún before offering a weak smile, "sorry." she added as her iron dust hissed around her and down to the wound in Dagrúns's side. Quickly it found its way into the wound, expanding and stopping the Hon from losing what blood remained. The man remained motionless, not even the soft rise and fall of breathing coming from him.
Feeling the sharp sensation coming from her side, Dagrún attempted to keep herself standing. Wanting to try to defend herself, she saw how the cover of a manhole slammed itself into the head of her assaulter. The audible crack of the man's skull due to the blow caused Dagrún's eyes to widen. For a moment, it was enough to make her forget for a second that she had been stabbed in the side as she watched the man being flung to the side like a ragdoll.
Blinking, the pain of before started to surface as Dagrún cursed. Still trying to keep herself standing, she found herself both surprised and confused when Aoi made her sat down. Already the Hon was wanting to disagree and push Aoi away, only for a much sharper pain to radiate from the stab wound. Instead of words of disagreement, Dagrún's lips parted as she gasped. The fingers of her right hand wrapped around one of Aoi's hands, squeezing as the burning sensation overwhelmed the numbing effect of the rush of adrenaline.
The mission was in a sense successful. Though the rough encounter had sadly see some lives being claimed, there was no noble house that claimed the deed or demanding retribution for the lives that were lost nor the men that were suffering heavy injuries at Dagrún or Aoi's doing. Meilin considered that it likely came to the fact that Dagrún belonged to the Dowhon House, which made it way less attractive to blow the fight up and pin the blame on anybody. Understanding the political play somewhat, Meilin wouldn't get her or the team involved into the affair. Medical treatment were given to both Aoi and Dagrún.
With their target being saved from the possible ambush and assassination, the mission was thus a success. And once Meilin had debriefed herself properly with a member of the Cho Guard, the team would be allowed to return to the inn.
►Ryu Uchiha◄
►Team: Team 19 Chuunin
►Location: Amegakure || Temporary Field Hospital
Holding up a clipboard as she moved quietly through the temporary field hospital, Ryu made small notes on her checklist as she checked on each of the patients. The girl's notes being things that she would later pass around to the other nurses working today, making sure each patient received the care they needed. Of course, there wasn't all that much they really needed as the nurses were working rather adeptly, but she liked to ensure even the small things were being taken care of. As she made her rounds, the girl occasionally stopped to talk with a few of the patients just to make sure they were doing alright. Shortly after checking with the patients she moved on to what had been designated as the 'break room' for those working at the field hospital. Looking towards the few who were gathered there, the Uchiha gave a small wave towards them and a friendly smile. "I just made my rounds, it seems like everybody is doing alright at the moment, though we need to head out to get some more medicine or we might be looking at having issues with infections. If you guys are busy I don't mind making the trip myself, if somebody can cover for me if Doctor Tsubaki needs something." She said, looking between each of them before she moved over to one of the chairs and sat down heavily. She had been pulling so many hours recently trying to run everything, that the girl was absolutely exhausted.
One of the other nurses, a woman in her late 40's with blonde hair moved over and set a hand on Ryu's shoulder. "Ryu we'll go out and get more some supplies, why don't you rest a little bit? Nobody can keep running around forever, and you seem to be bent on doing exactly that." The woman said politely, although her tone had a bit of force behind it. As if she were talking to her child instead of somebody working alongside them. Before Ryu could even begin to protest, the woman shook her head at the young Uchiha. "That's not something we are discussing. Sit. Take a break. We'll cover for you at the moment." She said, giving out an order despite the fact that Ryu had been kind of running the nursing efforts at Doctor Tsubaki's request. Ryu begrudgingly accepted the woman's request, letting out a long sigh as she relaxed just a little bit in the chair. Still, she seemed ready to get to her feet and start running around once again the moment she was needed to do so. After a few more moments the blonde nurse seemed to think of something else as she moved over to a nearby little table that had been set up and had various papers as well as envelopes set on top of it. Returning with an envelope she handed it over to Ryu. "This came in for you today, Ryu, Amekage's office." She said as the girl wore an expression of confusion as she accepted the envelope and opened it quickly.
Her eye scanning the paper a couple of times, it slowly went wider as she read. After she finished reading it, the girl read through the letter another three or four times before finally stopping. Setting down the piece of paper, she let out a soft sigh almost sounding like a sigh of relief. Then a rather pleased smile spread across her lips as the other nurses who were about to finish their breaks cast their attention towards Ryu. The looks on their faces seemed to ask the question for them as Ryu excitedly gestured towards the piece of paper. "I got promoted, to Chuunin! Its because of the work I've been doing here and with helping rebuild the hospital and all that!" The girl explained in a clearly excited tone, the good news she had been given making her day improve significantly. "They ask that I continue to work at the pace I am now, but... it feels good to know that I'm evidently doing some really good work!" She said before bouncing to her feet as if the news had filled her with another bout of energy that had previously been lacking from her system. "Uhm, if you could still go out on the medicine run, that would be really helpful. Take somebody with you, and I'm gonna go out and check in with the Doctor. Want to see if there is anything else we need before you head out and if there is something he needs me to do immediately." She said quickly, before quickly moving out of the break room once again but this time with a little hint of spring in her step.
Hikari's Test
[ Kirigakure, capital of the Republic of Water | A collab between Hikari Torimoto { @Nim } and Nishi Hirashima { @Oetje } ]
| Training Field | Hikari is summoned to a training field. There she meets her sensei to be, who subjegates her to a well known test. Though the start doesn't seem so promising, Nishi soon finds enough reason to be content with the newest addition to her team. |
The sun was starting to rise at the horizon, heralding a new day as the soft warm rays would touch down on the capital of the Republic. The light fog that was quite common throughout the year hang lightly on the ground as most common folk would wake up to get ready for another day of work. Some would also head home from a shift performed during night.
For Nishi, it had been a bit of both. Ever since she had came back from her previous assignment, she had tried to convince whoever she could contact in the Council that the decision of the Senate was wrong. That it could lead to disaster and misfortune. But nobody had decided to even hear her out.
Bitter and frustrated, her situation didn't get better when she caught wind that a new genin was assigned to her team. Seeing the previous composition of her team, it wasn't too strange that she got another genin. But the timing was a bit too convenient for the higher ups to silence her. Not that she imagined the assigned genin was even aware of this all.
Judging from what she had read from the profile, the genin had no ability or talent that sparked Nishi's curiosity. Her background wasn't ideal but then again, most that were either drafted or volunteered into the shinobi corps didn't come from ideal backgrounds and origins. Most that volunteered probably actually didn't but were forced, in one way or another.
Deciding to test out the new genin, Nishi would send a note that the genin had to come early morning to the training field. There Nishi would see how competent the newly graduated through a few tests.
Receiving the message to arrive at the training field made her feel somewhat anxious. She was finally assigned to a team, and now came the time for her first ever meeting with her team leader, or rather, sensei. Trying to stay as calm as possible, Hikari began making her way towards the indicated training field, making sure to arrive there on time. Not earlier, not later, on time.
Reaching the training field, Hikari took a brief moment to look into the field, catch her breath and calm her nerves a bit more. This was one step in what she had aimed to do so far. Now it was time to push through the step, and make it through. Show her new sensei who she was, and what she was capable of. Even if she finished with not the greatest scores, Hikari felt determined about this. Walking into the training field, she approached the woman that was waiting there. Once there was about 4 steps distance between the two, she stopped and offered the woman a bow "Hikari Torimoto, reporting for duty." She said, before rising from the bow.
Eyeing the genin that arrived on the field, Nishi remained where she was. If anything, this genin had some manners. Genuine manners, so far Nishi could see. More than a certain Yuki seemed to possess.
"Mhm, good. You are on time." Nishi just bluntly stated. She would gesture to the field around them. "Which means we can get started. Before I will welcome you into the team, I want to get an understanding of you, miss Torimoto." Nishi paused as she frowned.
"Why did you decide to become a kunoichi?"
Better understanding of her. While it sounded a bit curious, it was not her place to question anything her superior chose to do, or ask why she did it. And she began with a question that her own father and grandfather both asked her at one point. Why choose this path. "I've decided to become a kunoichi because of a selfish reason. When I first showed signs of chakra, I've enjoyed it. Then I was forbidden from practicing on it, and it only made me want to find a way to train it further. When I was finally able, the occupation occured. It felt like the world was turning against me in my pursuit of it. It only made me want so much more to find a way to pursue my desire. So I kept pursuing it. That is my reason."
Nishi slightly frowned upon hearing that the girl had a selfish reason. In any case, she was honest, Nishi mused to herself somewhat amused. Placing her hands on her hips, Nishi listened further to what the genin gave as an answer.
"Okay. Then let us test your resolve out. Take your place over there," Nishi instructed the girl as Nishi's right hand traveled to a pouch. Pulling out a bell, stringed to a black cord, Nishi would wrap it around her belt.
"You want to become a kunoichi? Prove it. You got ten minutes to try to take this belt from me. Fail? And I might decide to send you back to the Academy or request you to be taken off this course." Nishi shrugged lightly. "After all, I won't suffer a bad sleep over ruining your dreams. This is your moment to prove your determination or fail."
Moving over to the instructed spot, Hikari looked over as Hirashima-sensei took out a bell and tied it around her belt with a black cord. She then proceeded to give her 10 minutes to get her belt, or risk being sent back to the academy. That wasn't a threat Hikari intended to take lightly, especially if her determination was on the line. There were no limitations or anything of the such given to her. Only 10 minutes.
While she was tempted to try and test Hirashima-sensei's reflex times, Hikari felt it might be a pretty obvious move, along with the question of how would she even do such a thing. After a moment, she decided to make her first move. Putting her hand into her shinobi toolkit, she pushed a shuriken into her sleeve, before visibly taking out a kunai. Grabbing a firm hold of it, she began to approach Hirashima-sensei. Her kunai was held with a semi-steady grip in front of her body, taking slow steps as she got closer towards her sensei. She would come to a halt about two steps away from Nishi, as though she is contemplating something, before kicking herself forward, her kunai clearly going towards Nishi's belt.
"Not even the seal of confrontation?" Nishi questioned as her eyebrows perked up. When Hikari approached her, her pace being slow and then stopping, Nishi didn't do much to halt Hikari's advance.
When Hikari dashed forwards, Nishi would swiftly move aside with a skid. Now with the genin to her side, the jounin would lash out with a quick kick before the genin would be able to recover from her first attempt.
Getting hit by the kick, Hikari dropped her kunai. She had no expectations to actually succeed with this attempt, but she also wasn't aware enough of the basic movements any person, even without basic training could do. And that was certainly her fault. After stumbling a couple of steps to the side, she turned to look at Hirashima-sensei "Apologies sensei. I guess I was thinking too much about the task at hand." She said, before putting a hand on the handle of her tanto. Slicing the belt off her would be a good strategy, but with the size of the tanto, it meant she needed to get very close. And having seeing her reaction, Hikari doubted she would be able to get close enough.
She briefly thought of something, and looked towards Nishi "Hirashima-sensei, you didn't give any limitations to how I need to obtain the belt, correct?" Hikari decided to ask.
Calmly pulling her leg back and turning to the genin, the jounin frowned. When Hikari brought up the fact that she hadn't gained any limitation, Nishi sighed. Forming the Tiger handsign, the woman would follow it with another motion. Crouching, the jounin placed the palm of her left hand to the ground.
In a fast pace, chakra would be surged into the ground and flow towards Hikari. The chakra would mould and transform the solid ground into a rapid flow of mud that seemed to grow out in a cone-shape towards Hikari.
Without receiving an actual response, Hikari watched her sensei form a seal and touch the ground. Understanding this meant some kind of attack was incoming, she caught a glimpse of the rapid flow of mud that started to rush towards her, before turning around and beginning to run to the side. She didn't think her fire technique would work against mud, and without having any way to block it, the only thing she figured she could do was try and avoid it.
Running towards a tree, Hikari jumped, grabbing a hold of the trunk before using chakra to climb up and move to stand on a branch that gave her sight towards her sensei "I only asked because I thought that perhaps I could suggest a bribe in exchange for the belt." She briefly called out to Hirashima-sensei, only to then put put her hand on her tanto's handle again. She could still feel the shuriken that was hidden in her right sleeve, waiting to be used, but for now she let her right hand rest on the tanto.
Straightening her back, Nishi stared at the genin. For a moment, she wondered where it had gone wrong. Was this just another kid that had received no proper training? Perhaps this kid was nothing different than a dreamer that thought that the shinobi life was filled with all kinds of luxuries.
"You failed." The words left the jounin's lips in a cold tone. "I gave you a chance to prove your determination. To see how badly you wanted to be a kunoichi. Instead, you ask for limitations when you are pitted against a jounin. And instead of showing resolve, you think a bribe will do?" Frowning, Nishi introduced a pause.
"Pathetic." The woman stated, the disgust both audible as visible. "Go home if this is all you can muster."
Hearing the declaration of her failure and the reasoning behind why it was, Hikari kept her eyes on Nishi. Letting go of the tanto's handle, she allowed the shuriken to slip into her hand, briefly aiming at her sensei and then throwing it as accurately as she could towards the belt, before dropping from the branch, drawing out her tanto and beginning to charge towards Hirashima-sensei.
If there was one thing she had learned to do, it was to put on a show of what people expected her to be. And she hoped it would be her advantage even in this case.
The shuriken soared through the air towards Nishi. The jounin raised her hand and a moment later managed to catch the weapon, with the weapon spinning harmless as Nishi's index finger had moved through the loop.
Frowning as Hikari decided to charge, Nishi would casually let the shuriken move from her index finger. Catching the weapon with her other hand, the jounin threw the weapon back at Hikari - aiming at the girl's left shoulder.
The sight of Nishi catching the shuriken so effortlessly did surprise Hikari, but she wouldn't stop her charge. With a bit of distance to cover, she put the most effort she could into her feet, trying to close in on her sensei the best she could. As the shuriken was thrown back at her, it managed to scratch Hikari, but she didn't stop. Her grip on her tanto tightened, and she raised the sword, as if she was aiming to try and strike from above.
"Oh?" Nishi mumbled as she saw how Hikari pressed on. With the genin raising her blade, the jounin suddenly dashed forward. Utilizing chakra to make her speed faster, the woman would attempt to move in with one hand grabbing the girl's arm and using the other to deliver a hard push - aiming to just move Hikari backwards.
As Hikari saw the jounin start to close in the distance as well, and with increased speed, she released the grip on the tanto, and moved her feet forward, turning her running into a slide. Her hand would aim to grab Nishi's belt, while her left, free hand would aim to grab Nishi's left leg, and if possible to pull her and make her fall to the ground. She knew if this was successful, it would end up in a rough landing for both of them, but perhaps it would be just enough to do what she needed to do.
Nishi's eyes narrowed as she would catch the motion of Hikari. While being faster than the genin, it was nearly inhuman to react perfectly in retaliation while dashing forward with the aid of chakra. The woman would grab the tanto with the hand that she had reached out while stretching the other to plant it against the ground - performing a rapid cartwheel to bring the bells higher and out of Hikari's reach.
With the two passing each other, Nishi would turn towards Hikari. Holding the genin's tanto, the jounin would hold the weapon out and simply let it fall in front of herself.
Her sensei's action helped her dodge Hikari's grasp, and the genin felt the rubbing of her clothing going roughly against her back from the slide, before moving to stand back up, catching sight of Nishi dropping the tanto in front of her. While she had been tempted to rummage through her tools once more, she imagined Hirashima-sensei would have a way to retaliate to anything she does. The jounin had much more experience than her, after all. But giving up wasn't an option.
Forming three seals, Hikari created a ball of flame above her bonded hands. Letting go of the seal, she then quickly threw the flame towards Hirashima-sensei, using the moment to try and distract the jounin while her left hand went into her pouch and grabbed the first thing it touched, being another shuriken, and pushing it into her sleeve once more. Moving to stand still, Hikari briefly pondered on what her next action should be, while keeping her eyes on Nishi.
Spotting that Hikari would weave handseals, Nishi brought her own hands together to form a sequence of four seals. By the time that the genin created a ball of flame, the jounin finished her own sequence of seals. Holding the last seal, the Dog seal, Nishi scoffed as she stomped the ground.
In front of Nishi, a wide and tall wall of earth was hastily erected from the ground and would blockade the sight on the jounin as preventing the flame to get too close.
Spotting the earth wall that now stood between her and where the jounin previously stood, Hikari felt more wary. The fact she didn't know if Nishi was still behind there was more worrying than anything else. Looking at the wall, she decided to start walking to her left, keeping her eyes on the wall until she could start seeing what was behind the wall once more. The last thing she wanted was to give her sensei a chance to use a close quarters attack on her. She figured it would hurt immensely if she used an earth technique on her from up close.
It remained silent for some moments. As Hikari would start to walk to her left, there would be no sign of Nishi. It seemed as if the jounin was waiting.
Until suddenly a hand burst out of the ground and aimed to grab the ankle of the genin.
The arm that burst out of the ground made Hikari jump, scaring her quite a bit before she landed on her rear. Staring at the hand, she started to move away from the hand, only to feel the hand managing to grab her shoe. Pulling her leg, she actually cursed for a moment how tightly she tied her shoes, before moving to look at the hand. If Hirashima sensei was beneath her, then perhaps she could try and use it to her advantage. Letting the hidden shuriken slide into her hand, she leaned closer and tried to slice at the back of the hand, hoping it would be enough to warrant her release.
The shuriken plunged into the hand but it had something unnatural to it. As if it just sunk into some substance. It briefly seemed to cause the grip of the hand become weak enough for the genin to pull her foot back. Then another hand burst out of the ground, clearly attempting to attempt once more to grab Hikari.
With Hikari being distracted by the two hands that burst out of the ground, Nishi would scale the wall that she had made. It provided great oversight on what happened. Pondering on her options, the jounin would once more form the streak of four handseals.
As the grasp of the hand, which turned out to be not Hirashima-sensei's hand, loosened just enough, Hikari pulled her leg away and then proceeded to roll away from the spot as another hand popped out, clearly attempting to get a hold of her. Breathing deeply, she looked around for a moment before spotting Hirashima-sensei on top of the earth wall, forming seals once again. Knowing most earth techniques need to have a connection to the earth, she quickly stood up and rummaged through her shinobi kit once more. Pulling out a kunai and an explosive tag, she wrapped the tag around the kunai, hoping she would be fast enough to pull off her next idea.
Finishing the seal, Nishi held the last seal as she noticed that Hikari noticed her. Curious to what the genin would do, Nishi would vault off the wall. Landing on the ground, the jounin performed a roll to break her fall further. In a swift motion, the jounin would get on her feet and ready for her next move.
With Hikari's attention focused on the real Nishi, the hands seemed to have vanished. Only to burst once more out of the ground in a clear attempt to grab both the genin's ankles.
As she finished wrapping the tag around the kunai, Hikari noticed Nish jumping off the wall, before landing on the ground perfectly. Cursing under her breath, she threw the kunai with the tag behind her, hitting the ground. It was at that moment that more hands burst from the ground, clearly attempting to grab a hold of her legs once more. Being more prepared for this, having seen it before, Hikari started to run towards Hirashima-sensei, dodging the hands as she did. As she was running forward, she moved to bring her hands together, not to form any seal, but instead to hold them together.
Observing the genin's movement, Nishi remained where she was. Moving her hands together, Nishi would focus on the next technique she had in mind. Allowing Hikari to come closer, Nishi would slowly nod before vanishing into the ground - denying Hikari the chance to execute any attempt from close ranged.
"And halt,"
The voice of the woman would resonate from another spot of the training field. Swiftly, the jounin seemed to climb out of the ground. At the same time, the earth wall of before crumbled and seemed to reduce to a pile of dirt.
"That suffices." Nishi calmly stated as she spent a moment to whip off some of the dust and dirt that sticked to her uniform.
Turning her attention at the genin, Nishi remained silent for a moment. Then beckoning Hikari to come closer.
"You passed. Barely, I need to add. But enough to make me content."
Before she had a chance to do anything, Hirashima-sensei vanished into the ground. Coming to a halt, Hikari pondered for a moment, before hearing a command to halt. Obeying the command this time, she turned to look at the jounin, who said that sufficed, before beckoning to approach her. Following the gesture, the genin started to walk forward, albeit with cautioned steps, as though another trap might still spring.
Upon being closer to Nishi, Hikari took a bow "I apologize for my earlier words, Hirashima-sensei. Due to my family name, I kept getting mocked that I could pay my way through the academy, with some suggestions being thrown after I graduated that was indeed the case. I merely wanted to make sure I was taken seriously." She said, remaining bowed until she heard the jounin speak again.
Listening to the apology, Nishi's features didn't shift. But she was growing more content with the new genin. Gesturing subtly that her pupil could straighten her back, Nishi spoke up.
"Apologies are accepted this time, Hikari. You would do well, however, to remember that your family name or origin won't matter anymore. We are to serve the Republic. Though different tasks and ranks, your background doesn't weigh in unless the Senate or Council see fit." The jounin paused as she would reach for the cord, where the bell was attached to.
Removing the cord from her belt, the jounin would nod towards the genin before presenting the bell.
"A reminder of your first lesson and sign that you passed my test." Nishi stated, who would place her hands on her hips afterwards. "I have seen and learned enough about you for today. Your next instruction is to ready yourself for when I will summon you. You shall meet your peers of this team as well. But I expect the discipline and professionalism, regardless of your rank as a genin."
Rising from the bow as Nishi gestured, Hikari listened to what her sensei had to say. The words that came made Hikari feel happy, and she would nod after hearing them. After seeing the bell untied and then handed to her, she took it with a bit of awe in her expression. Squeezing her right fist around the bell, the genin looked back at the jounin, listening intently to the rest of her words, before speaking up "Of course sensei. I'll be ready for when that time comes, and make sure to keep this lesson in mind. I won't tarnish the Republic's reputation by misrepresenting it, either." once done, she briefly looked at the bell again, before turning to look at Nishi again.
"Good. You are dismissed, Hikari." Nishi stated with an even tone. Glancing at the training field, she rested her gaze briefly on the small pile of rubble. Perhaps, Nishi mused to herself...
