The Mondegreen game!
Post a mondegreen and see if the next person can solve it!
What is a mondegreen? Its a misinterpretation of a phrase because it sound so much like other words! The Wikipedia page shows examples, but I'll give two here.
Mondegreen: "Ice Bank Mice Elf"
True Phrase: I spank myself.
From the 1943 novelty song "Mairzy Doats"
Mondegreen:
"Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey"
True Phrase:
"Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy."
Mondegreens can be hard to decipher alone. A GREAT tactic is to QUICKLY read the mondegreen aloud to a friend without letting them see the words. Because they're processing this without the written language, they're more likely to hear the true phrase!
