How would you go about describing a TV show, game, movie, book series -- anything at all, really -- in a way that makes it sound like something completely different than what it is, all while still technically not lying about anything in your summary? For example, can you make something lighthearted and kid-friendly sound dark and gritty? Can you make a notoriously bad movie sound really clever and interesting? This is just a fun thing that I've thought about from time to time, and I thought I'd start a thread here to see what people can come up with. Here are a few:
A half-human half-alien hybrid is born on earth, causing the mother to die in the process. The child lives on, struggling to make sense of his identity as a human or an alien. He uses his alien abilities to help defend the earth from monsters, aided by friends of the child's mother. The hybrid child sometimes struggles with thinking that it's his fault that his mother died, and worries that his caretakers resent him for causing his mother's death. A bunch of kids play a video game together, and accidentally trigger the apocalypse. They embark on a journey through time, space, and even the afterlife, discovering the true nature of their universe and its origins. They are unable to save their world as they knew it, but they are eventually become gods and create a new world to live in. [spoili]Homestuck[/spoili]
An MMO where, if you die in the game, you die in real life. The danger in playing the game is not kept a secret — in fact, players are even warned about it up-front — and news outlets have already covered many stories regarding the real danger that people have encountered while playing this game and the real lives that have been endangered. Despite all this, the game remains immensely popular, and has seen more downloads than any other game of its kind. [spoili]Pokemon Go[/spoili]
And lastly, a special bonus entry...
A world where one's lifespan is directly tied to their popularity. Individuals who remain well-known and well-liked get to enjoy a long life, while individuals whose popularity has run out will soon have to face their quickly-approaching demise — and, worse yet, it seems that hardly anyone will care that they're gone. Surprisingly, hardly anyone in this world calls attention to how harsh this situation is, and they often continue to treat popularity contests as just that — popularity contests.
